How to eat and live healthy in a Swiggy-Zomato-Uber Eats world – BusinessLine

A few years ago, mom told us that everyone at work was talking about it. So, I also gave the GM diet a try. Soon, it made me weak and I was not enjoying it. Over the years, juggling between not eating carbs or eating only fruits and soup, I fainted a few times due to low sugar or low blood pressure, says Aishwarya Bhosale (name changed), a 24-year-old post-graduate student. The GM diet, also known as the General Motors diet, promises rapid results for those looking to lose body fat rapidly, by having them eat select foods. It was apparently devised by the carmaker to help its employees lose weight.

Heena Parmar, a Chennai-based professional in the event management industry, has tried numerous diets because of her sedentary lifestyle. I saw a social media influencer posting her food habits, swapping rice with cauliflower rice, whole-wheat chapatis with coconut-flour rotis... A lot of other influencers were doing the same. Without doing much research I just followed her. A few days into the diet, I was ill and unhappy. The story is pretty much the same with Riya, Shruti and Rohan, all of whom have been wrestling with food and lifestyle changes.

While junk food has proliferated and is just a keypad touch away from ones doorstep, the same is the case with healthy food. The only problem: what exactly should one eat? Awareness about the need to eat and live healthy has grown but there are millions of advisers out there and it is hard to know which one to follow. A simple Google search can get you in touch with the diets of skinny models and actors. Hashtags such as #cleaneating, #detox and #diet will lead you millions of pictures on Instagram. Millions world-over watch lifestyle and diet videos on YouTube the latest fad is watching various What I eat in a day videos. The ample number of diets veto (vegan keto), paleo, Atkins, vegan, raw food, only-fruit, gluten-free and so on has created a sumptuous cocktail of myth and confusion.

According to a study by management consultancy RedSeer, entitled Indian habit of being healthy, India is home to 90 million Health Conscious Individuals (HCI). And, it says, this figure will touch 130 million by 2020.

The RedSeer report also states that a large segment of the HCIs consist of people who are highly concerned and aware of fitness needs but only make partial efforts.

Vicky Sinha, running on the corporate hamster wheel, says eating healthy food is a task. With everything being delivered at the doorstep, I keep slipping in and out of my diet plans. I think I might now start an intermittent fasting diet; I saw it on Instagram a few days ago, he says.

These short-term, quick-result diets give instant gratification. But they can also have adverse effects, both mentally and physically. Riya Chauhan, a college student, says she tried the only soup for dinner diet method. It gave me instant results. But once I stopped it, I gained double the weight I lost, in no time.

Vicky says that his mundane, desk job gives him no time to exercise. That is why he keeps trying the fancy diets. These diets help me feel a little less guilty of being in an unhealthy life situation, he says.

Kannan Raman, Nutritionist and co-founder of Daily9, a lifestyle coaching digital entity, says the most important aspect of living healthy is to sleep well at least for eight hours; eat well focussing on quality rather than quantity; and exercise regularly, in that order.

And if one wants to follow a diet, he says, simple and boring wins every time. Start slow and do not stop. Kannan has a basic thumbrule for anyone who wants to go on a diet. Do you see yourself sustaining this for a year? If the answer is no, then maybe this is not for you. Anyone who wants to go on a diet, he says, should be mentally prepared for change and be ready to sustain that change over the long term.

Dr M Meenakshi Sundaram, a Chennai-based general physician, says jumping on to the crash-diet bandwagon may not necessarily be the best choice for a person. Dietary restrictions are not required for youngsters, he says. People who are young and active need foods that will fuel their energy, and that has to come from carbs, he says.

Another myth that is being followed is the no-whites diet, which he says is not good for health, especially for youngsters. Salt, sugar and rice are required by the body. The brain needs sugar to function and the body needs some amount of salt. Youngsters should not avoid these completely.

Kannan and Dr Meenakshi both recommend that people stay close to their roots and eat the food from their culture rather than venturing out, in a manner of speaking, to distant places such as the Mediterranean to follow fancy diets alien to them. Any change in the diet should happen gradually, Kannan says. For instance, by adding an extra vegetable in meals, or gradually increasing the portion size of vegetables.

In the end, says Aishwarya Bhosale, who tried the GM diet: It is best to consult an expert and get a tailor-made diet, to avoid repercussions.

Oldest and Thickest Sea Ice Above Greenland Is Melting Twice As Fast As Other Ice – Yahoo Lifestyle

The Arctics oldest and thickest ice is melting twice as fast as other ice in the Arctic Ocean, according to a new study by the American Geophysical Union.

The study, published in the groups journal Geophysical Research Letters, discovered the ice in the ocean north of Greenland (which researchers thought would be the last place to lose year-round ice cover) was more mobile than they previously thought and that the ice there is declining twice as fast as ice in the rest of the Arctic, according to the AGU. The group determined that the ice is likely affected by the ocean currents and atmospheric winds transporting the older, thicker ice to other parts of the area.

And researchers predict the Arctic could be ice-free in the summers as early as 2030.

According to the report, most ice covering the Arctic is about one to four years old. Conversely, the Last Ice Area is an area with ice that is more than five years old and can measure more than 13 feet thick. The research showed, however, the ice was becoming thinner in two subregions of that area.

We cant treat the Last Ice Area as a monolithic area of ice which is going to last a long time, Kent Moore, an atmospheric physicist at the University of Toronto in Canada and the lead author of the new study, said in a statement. Theres actually lots of regional variability.

The Last Ice Area is considered a refuge for wildlife, according to the AGU.

Eventually the Last Ice Area will be the region that will repopulate the Arctic with wildlife, Moore added. If we lose all the ice, we lose those species. This area will be a refuge where species can survive and hopefully expand their regions once the ice starts returning.

In an effort to visualize the melting ice, the AGU posted a video earlier this week that shows the age of the Arctic sea ice between 1984 and 2019. The two-minute video displays the older ice cover, shown in white, shrinking significantly over the years.

Unfortunately, melting ice is not new and disappearing glaciers have continued to reveal landscapes not seen for thousands of years. In January, researchers found plants that had been hidden for at least 40,000 years revealed by melting glaciers in the Canadian Arctic. And in October, five new islands were discovered by the Russian navy following glacial melting.

"We delivered another quarter of very solid results," CEO Chris Rondeau said in a media release. "High system-wide same store sales, combined with accelerated new store openings and our franchisees' continued commitment to re-equip their existing clubs with new equipment, fueled a 22 percent increase in total revenue. The third quarter was also highlighted by our highest-attended franchisee conference to date with over 1,500 attendees from across the system coming together to share ideas on how to strengthen the Planet Fitness brand, enhance the member experience and drive new member sign-ups.

The company's franchise segment revenue increased to $66.7 million, corporate-owned stores segment revenue grew to$40.7 million and equipment segment revenue improved to $59.4 million, representing increases of 21.7percent, 15.1percentand 27.9percent, respectively.

Planet Fitness' adjusted EBITDAincreased 22.2percent to $65.7million.

The 41new club openings boosted Planet Fitness' total facility count to 1,899as of Sept.30, 2019.

Based on several factors, including our experienced franchisees and their ability to execute, the significant amount of projected store expansion still ahead and our increasing marketing spend, I am confident that the business is well positioned to drive continued growth and increased profitability, Rondeau said in the release.

In other news, the company has proposed a recapitalization transaction of its subsidiaries' existing securitized financing facility. As of Sept. 30, the company claimed $1.2 billion in outstanding debt under its existing financing facility and is seeking to issue $550 million Series 2019-1 Fixed Rate Senior Secured Notes. Net proceeds from the facility will be used to pay transaction costs and for working capital and general corporate purposes. The proposal, if approved, is slated to close during the fourth quarter.

Additionally, Planet Fitness announced its first Australian clubs have opened in the New South Wales cities of Tuggerah and Gosford with a third location expected to open in Casula in 2020. The company has signed a special development agreement with Bravo Fit Holdings Pty Ltd., a group consisting of American and Australian franchisees, to develop 35 locations in the country in coming years.

The company ranked No. 6 onClub Industrys Top 100 Health Clubs of 2019 listwith$572.9 million in 2018revenue from corporate-owned locations and franchisee fees but not individual franchisee revenue.

$1 million investment expands fitness center at Spring Arbor University – MLive.com

SPRING ARBOR, MI - Spring Arbor University invested nearly $1 million to replace its indoor pool with an expanded fitness center.

The Faith Small Fitness Center opened on Wednesday, Nov. 6, inside the McDonald Athletic Center, 106 E. Main St. The investment came from the schools general fund, as well as a donation from the Faith F. Small Foundation and Charlie and Beth Kuntzleman.

The fitness center is named after Small, who served on the schools Board of Trustees from 1984 until she died in June 2016 at age 94.

We are deeply appreciative for Faiths generous and heartfelt service to Spring Arbor University," President Brent Ellis said in a news release. Her generosity, in many shapes and forms, to the university and the Jackson community allowed them to move forward in profound ways.

The space expanded from 1,400 square feet to more than 6,300 square feet and now contains workout options for non-athlete students, such as:

A student survey in 2018 spurred the school to remove the pool and expand the fitness center, said Vice President of Enrollment and Marketing John Bahr.

We had a space that was extremely underutilized, he said. The cost of running and maintaining a pool every year is significant...We realized we had a pretty significant opportunity to listen to students and provide a space for the entire campus to benefit from.

The space will also host classes for students studying physical therapy in the health and human performance department. Trained students and staff will also run a physical therapy clinic in the space that is open to the public.

It can provide free injury screenings for students, faculty and staff, and provide orthopedic, spinal, soft tissue services and more. Visit the schools website to book sessions at the physical therapy clinic, or call Dr. Mitchell Zigler, the clincial director, at 517-750-6800.

Bahr expects the clinic to fully move to the fitness center after Christmas break. He said he is looking forward to the fitness center providing more space for the residential nursing program, and possibly the electrical engineering department in the future.

We couldnt be more excited for what the fitness center adds to our campus, says Corey Ross, vice president for student development and success. Leading edge equipment in a large, attractive space will support goals and inspire healthy habits to cultivate students minds, bodies and souls for a lifetime of loving and serving others.

New aquatics and fitness center opens Thursday in Yakima – YakTriNews KAPP-KVEW

YAKIMA, Wash. - The new YMCA and Yakima Rotary Aquatic Center held a ribbon cutting Monday, followed by an open house for community members.

The expansive facility at the former site of Chesterley Park near 40th Avenue and Powerhouse Road includes a pool, lazy river, water play area, water slides and two saunas.

"[The] aquatics features are really second to none in the Northwest," Yakima YMCA Executive Director Bob Romero said.

The project broke ground in May 2018 and has been in the works for the past seven years, Romero said.

"We're really excited about this facility," Romero said.

The current YMCA location in downtown Yakima will remain open. Those who already have a membership at that location will be able to use it at the new location for no extra charge.

"Chesterley gives us an opportunity to be one Y' with two locations and serve more people in our community," Romero said.

The new center also has a full fitness studio, indoor track, basketball court, an entire floor of fitness equipment.

Other amenities include two full locker rooms. No locks are required for the lockers: you punch in a personalized code to lock it and use the same code to unlock it.

The locker rooms also have a device to dry swimsuits; pop your suit in, hold the lid for 10 seconds and pull it out mostly dry. Smaller, private locker rooms allow families or persons with disabilities to have privacy.

"We're very excited about what we have to offer people," Romero said.

The center includes a childcare area, where parents can pay $5 per child per visit to drop off kids six weeks old to six years old for up to two hours while they work out. For older kids six to 15 there's a drop-in after-school program in the youth room.

Aquatics classes, such as Aqua Zumba, are scheduled to start Thursday. Most fitness classes will start Monday, with the exception of Pilates, which starts Nov. 26.

Starting Thursday, the center is open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

The best fitness and wellness gifts under $100 – CNET

This story is part of Holiday Gift Guide 2019, your source for the season's best gifts and deals, hand-picked by the experts at CNET.

Taking care of your well-being can mean working out, getting quality sleep, managing your stress levels, or just making sure you drink enough water. If you have wellness-minded friends, they're probably passionate about all of the above -- and more than likely always on the lookout for items that will make their life healthier and happier. That's why a gift that shows that you care about their well-being is about as meaningful as you can get.

Whether your friends are working on their fitness or trying to hack their bedtime routine, there's a perfect present out there for them. Below, check out 13 of our favorite wellness-related gifts this year.

Not only is this white-noise sound machine designed with a real fan inside (so you don't have to worry about crackling or awkwardly looping tracks), it's portable, too, meaning your friends can get a good night's sleep wherever they go. With a corresponding app that allows the user to adjust between the 10 volume settings remotely, the Snooz should be able lull even the lightest sleeper to dreamland.

This beanie fits snugly on the head and is double-layered for warmth and coziness, but its breathable Merino fabric keeps air flowing in order to avoid a dreaded sweaty head. It's even lightweight enough to layer with a hood or another hat for especially frigid mornings.

Great for hot or cold beverages and compatible with five different types of caps, this vacuum-sealed bottle from Yeti is about as versatile as it gets -- making it a perfect candidate to replace your friend's single-use coffee cups and plastic water bottles.

Fuel on the go doesn't have to be bland and boring -- it can be a sumptuous nut butter bar, a chewy oat bar or a vegan ginger peach bar, all of which you can find in Mouth's bar gift box. Featuring six bars in total, this box should give your friends a much-needed respite from their regular bland trail mix.

This set of five resistance bands is extremely travel-friendly and offers a wide enough range of resistances to meet anyone's level. Plus, the included exercise manual and door anchor make it easy to set up so you can work out at home, in a hotel room or at the gym.

Gifting your friend a subscription to meditation app Headspace means potentially giving the gift ofbetter sleep, lower blood pressureand overall reduced levels of stress. A yearlong subscription comes in right at the $100 limit, but one month of Headspace only costs $12.99 if you want to give your friend a shorter trial period before committing to the meditation lifestyle.

CNET's overall pick for best essential oil diffuser on Amazon can run for 10 hours, emitting cool mist as quietly as a whisper. Not only can it imbue any room with the soothing scent of your favorite essential oil, its 15 lighting modes and sleek exterior design make it lovely to look at, too.

Whether your friends are filling up at the office water cooler or at the banks of a stream in the backcountry, they can rest easily knowing that they're drinking clean water from a LARQ bottle, which the company says is the only bottle that can purify water with UV light technology on the go.

YnM's weighted blanket made CNET's best-of list for its wide range of weight options (from 5 to 25 pounds), breathable design and reasonable price. If your friends are always complaining about their low-quality shut-eye and racing thoughts before bedtime, the comforting pressure of a weighted blanket could help them get a good night's sleep.

This itty-bitty hip pack is big enough to hold a set of keys and a phone, but light enough that it won't weigh down the wearer. And, if your friends get caught in the rain, their stuff will stay dry thanks to the pack's durable water repellent finish.

Unlike your average mat bag or sling, Aurorae's backpack is made to carry everything in one place, including a change of clothes, a water bottle, a laptop and, yes, a yoga mat itself. And its design is made with travel in mind, whether your friend walks, bikes or drives to the studio.

If Icebreaker's beanie wasn't enough to keep your jogging pals warm through the winter, gift them a pair of Smartwool's running socks that are as lightweight as they are toasty. Made specifically with runners in mind, these socks are flexible enough to move with the wearer's ankles and feet, but still plenty durable.

This alarm clock simulates the gradual, warm light of a sunrise, without necessarily waking the user up at the crack of dawn. It offers a wide variety of alarms sounds as well, from birdsong to wind chimes, to allow your friends to slowly greet the day without being jarred awake.

Now playing: Watch this: How to win Black Friday and Cyber Monday in 2019
