Cardio or dance, Group X Fitness has it all – The Observer

Whether youre into cardio or dance, Group X Fitness has the class for you. Monday through Friday in Recreation Center 287, instructors lead students through a set workout that caters to every students skill level.

Classes offered include yoga, barre (which incorporates ballet and pilates to help with balance), Zumba and many others.

Graduate student in law and justice, Emileo Guevara explained why he likes the full-body circuit class.

Its better than going by myself, Guevara said. Because I have someone directing me on what to do.

Full-body circuit challenges the body by incorporating dumbbells, medicine balls and other exercise equipment giving your entire body a workout. Shantyle Black, a CWU student and Group X Fitness instructor, explained what her favorite part about the classes is.

Meghan Rochelle

Theres so many different skill levels, Black said. And its really fun to create a workout that everyone can do.

This is Blacks first quarter teaching the class on her own, last year she shadowed a class for personal training. The Recreation Center asked Black and a few others if they would be willing to teach the class, and Black agreed.

CWU student Karyn Meraz participated in the Zumba class that Group X offers. She chose the class because its fun and entertaining and you still get to work out.

I like dancing, Meraz said. And Zumba is a great way to incorporate that.

Meraz likes the class because she gets to burn calories and the instructor keeps her engaged.

Senior and IT Administrative Management major David Lin is the instructor for the class, and like Black, this is his first quarter teaching the class on his own.

Lin teaches the students a set workout which includes simple, easy-to-follow cardio infused dance moves like side steps and plies.

Lin started the class with a warm up routine and as the class progressed the workouts became more intense. Afterwards, he began the cool down process.

When youre cooling down, Lin said. Its very important to stretch [the muscles] out, to loosen them up a little.

This prevents any injuries and allows the muscles to relax so they dont hurt as much the next day.

When asked if they would recommend these classes to others, the participants answered yes and absolutely.

Meraz said that she would recommend the Zumba class to anyone that wants to learn the movement. She said Lin is very encouraging, and you can go at your own pace. If you dont know the movement, thats okay because no one is going to make fun of you for it, according to Meraz.

Lin said Zumba incorporates a lot of diverse dancing and music styles. He likes that the diversity can bring students together.

Diversity itself is just curiosity, Lin said. I try to unite students with different kinds of culture and different kinds of music.

Black said that her favorite thing about the students that come through her class is the fact that each student is different, both in skill level and life. According to Black, what makes this fun is they can all come together and work out.

Whether its Zumba or full-body fitness, the students said that they really enjoy the way that the class is structured, and they like how encouraging the instructors are. Meraz and Guevara recommend these classes to others for those reasons.

Black also mentioned how much she loves seeing the progress that the students make.

Seeing everyone have fun with it is the best part about it, Black said.

Family finds fitness and much more at YMCA – GazetteNET

Published: 11/13/2019 8:17:10 AM

Healthy living is a core value in our family. When we relocated, from Boulder, Colorado, we considered a number of communities in New England before deciding to move to Northampton. We were attracted by the extensive network of bike paths, abundance of local food production, access to forests and trails, a culture of higher learning and a multitude of resources for raising a family.

Still, during our early years in Northampton, Lori and I struggled with the reality that raising two young children, Zoe and Adam, in the absence of local friendships or family, was challenging. In particular, finding ways to remain physically active something Lori and I had come to take for granted while living in the outdoor recreational mecca of Boulder was essential to our well-being and sanity.

Fortunately, Northampton is home to the Hampshire Regional YMCA. Once we learned that Y membership included access to free child care through the Child Watch program and its experienced, well-trained providers we quickly decided the cost of membership was a worthy addition to our frugal family budget.

It was not long before Lori and I came to appreciate that the Y focused more broadly on healthy living, including spirit, mind and body, and was not just a place to exercise. So, over the years, in addition to regular cardio workouts in the gym and laps in the pool, we have enjoyed yoga and meditation classes, family mindfulness retreats at the Ys summer camp facility, and blissful sits in the steam room during long New England winters. As a bonus, since Y memberships include reciprocal benefits with many YMCAs in the U.S., Lori and I have exercised for no additional cost at other Ys in Massachusetts as well as in Connecticut, New Hampshire, Florida and Illinois, when traveling for work or visiting family.

As Zoe and Adam, teen and tween respectively, have aged, they have increasingly benefited from the Ys focus on youth develop, including swim lessons, open gym, open swim, the youth lounge and gymnastics program. These activities have offered a positive, social setting to develop their growing bodies, build friendships, and be part of a larger community committed to wellness.

One of the greatest and unexpected benefits of the Y, for Lori and me, is the way the center acts as a hub for social connection. Every visit to the Y offers an opportunity for brief yet enriching connection with friends, kids of all ages, other parents, professional colleagues, and acquaintances, reminding us that we are part of a larger community committed to healthy living. And for many years, Lori has taught Pilates classes at the Y, offering her both a circle of colleagues and connection to many throughout the community.

Recently our family participated in the Ys 8th Annual 5k Run. The weather was glorious, mid-40s and sunshine, with colorful, fallen leaves underfoot as we paced our way along the bike path and looped around picturesque Look Park. Lori and Zoe helped set up for the event. Zoe, along with friends from the Y gymnastics team stationed themselves on the course to cheer runners and walkers. Lori, who has recently returned to running, logged her best 5k time in decades. Adam and I ran together, and he out sprinted me at the end to log a personal best time.

After the course cleared, we gathered inside to hear race results. More importantly, the race director shared words about the Y community and the importance of the event. I was astonished to learn that in the prior year, the Y had devoted over $270,000 toward scholarships and discounted memberships, in order to help make the Y accessible to even more children and families.

I left the event with even greater appreciation for all the Y has to offer. Initially we joined the Y as a place to workout, but weve chosen to stay for the many ways it helps us sustain a healthy lifestyle, including connection to the community we now call home.

5 of the best fitness games you can take with you anywhere on Nintendo Switch – inews

CultureGamingBy making excercise into a game, these titles could be the key to leveling up your fitness.

Wednesday, 13th November 2019, 3:59 pm

Exercise is hard. Finding the motivation to start exercising is often even harder.

With that in mind, many games developers have devoted themselves to finding ways to make working out fun by rolling it into a videogame.

Recently, there has been a real trend for mobile apps like Fitocracy, which aim to gamify your exercise experience.

Companies like Nintendo have been working on it for years, with a range of sporty games released for their motion-control console the Wii.

That consoles successor, the Nintendo Switch, also boasts motion-controls amongst its many features, spawning a whole range of shiny new fitness-centric games for it too.

Fitness Boxing

Rather than focusing on bloodying up opponents or going after belts, Fitness Boxing sees player throwing punches to the rhythm of an up-tempo pop song.

Completing a level and racking points allows you to unlock customisable bits and pieces for your avatar, as well as a wider selection of songs to bob and weave to.

By allowing players to set their own goal as well as programming in how much time they are able to commit, Fitness Boxing offers them a workout tailor-made for each individual. As they progress, more exercises are opened up to them, keeping things fresh.

Just Dance 2020

The original Just Dance game was released for the Wii back in 2009, building on the popularity of Dance Dance Revolution-style games by using motion-controls to get the players upper body involved too.

Since then, the series has kept a constant supply of updated, upgraded Just Dance games coming, most recently with this years Just Dance 2020.

This years soundtrack is kitted out with 40 new tracks and includes songs by Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, Cardi B and Lil Nas X. Even the most wearied soul will struggle to keep their feet from moving.

It also has a Kids section filled with tracks like Baby Shark (do do, dodo do do) which is perfect for getting the little ones up and moving too.

Ring Fit Adventure

By far the most unusual entry on this list, Ring Fit Adventure represents the latest attempt by Nintendo to integrate fun, colourful gameplay with healthy living.

Ring Fit Adventure is basically a standard RPG in which you wander a fantastical realm, fending off monsters and completing quests. The catch is that you do so by performing various exercises.

With one controller snapped into a plastic tension ring and the other strapped to the players leg, the game offers a full-body workout as the hero runs through obstacle courses, squats down to pick up treasure and battles dumbbell-shaped bad guys.

Brilliantly, it also features a Quiet Mode that trades out running for knee bends for those who want to get in shape without disturbing the rest of the house.

Zumba Burn It Up!

Created by a Columbian dancer in the 90s, Zumba sparked a fitness craze by blending high-intensity training with infectious Latin dance music. Today, there are estimated to be over 14 million Zumba students taking classes all across the world.

Zumbas high-energy style, emphasis on fun and enduring popularity made it the ideal fit for the Nintendo Switch, and the two have now come together with Zumba Burn It Up!

The game allows up to four players to take on any of its 30 tracks as they shake their hips in time to the music with as much verve and flair as they can manage.

With routines drawn from reggaetn, salsa, merengue, cumbia, hip hop, and Bollywood, theres something here for everybody.

Sports Party

The game that came with the Wii, Wii Sports immediately found widespread popularity thanks to how easy it was for anyone to pick up and play. Naturally, it inspired waves of imitators, with Sports Party now looking to take up the mantle for a new generation.

Sports Party is made very much in the same vein, using a bright and breezy visual style to appeal to people beyond hardcore gamers. Just like Wii Sports, it lets players choose between six different events Gold, Beach Tennis, Basketball, Skateboarding, Frisbee and Jet Ski.

With various unlockables to be harnessed through the events and colourful game world, Sports Party does its best to make exercising a cheerful experience.

New Wellness and Fitness Studios Opening in Dallas This Month – D Magazine

Shine Hot PilatesRachel Pierce and Whitney Stern of Shine Hot Pilates

The reformer-free, Tracy Anderson-inspired Pilates studio has been hosting pop-ups since this summer, giving Dallas a taste of its heated sculpting and rhythmic moves. Its a bit looser and allows you to just be a little wild for about an hour, says Whitney Stern, who co-founded Shine with her friend Rachel Pierce. The two former instructors spent time in Los Angeles, New York, and Las Vegas studying fitness trends to craft their Dallas dream studio, which opens in The Hill Shopping Center this weekend.

{Grand Opening (with giveaways and 30-minute classes): November 16}

Another Pilates studio opening this weekend combines reformers with TRX bands in Uptown. The name (which one of my co-workers believes to be a nod to the Grammy Award-winning trio Naughty by Nature) is well represented in the studios greenery and natural decor elements. Kombucha and nitro brew are always complimentary, and your first Pilates by Nature class is on the house.

We touched down on Class Studios expansion last week, but for a quick refresher: the new Preston Center space introduces three new concepts. Theres a sculpting option, a HIIT class with treadmills, and Lab, where local instructors will be able to experiment with class formats.

{Grand Opening: November 23}

I didnt know Dallas needed a luxury infrared sauna studio, mainly because I didnt know luxury infrared sauna studios existed. But they do, and thankfully, after making its way to Austin last summer, CYL Sauna Studio (which also has locations in Nashville, Memphis, and Boulder) just landed on Greenville Avenue. Essentially, youll sit in your own sweat pod (alone or in tandem with a friend) for 30 minutes of infrared heat, which offers all the benefits of sunbathing without the dangerous effects. Bring headphones!

Fitness Facts: Staying healthy over the holidays – GCU Today

Connie Colbert

By Connie ColbertDirector, Canyon Health and Wellness Clinic

The holiday season is upon us and the temptations are all around us! Here are some tips to staying healthy around the holidays:

Exercise in the morning

According to a study published in the journalMedicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, morning exercise can help ensure better behavior all day long.

Using brain scans, researchers found that when women worked out in the a.m., they not only moved more the rest of the day, but they also responded less to pictures of tempting food compared with the days they didnt do a morning workout.

Avoid saving your calories all day for that one meal

Cutting back all day so you can indulge at an event that night only sets you up for a pig-out. Be sure to eat your three meals and a couple of snacks. Aim for lots of fruits and veggies, whole grains and lean protein.

Consolidate your workouts

If you cant get to your favorite yoga class or find time for the treadmill, even 15 minutes can help you maintain your fitness level. For example, jumping rope for 15 minutes burns about 190 calories; a quick yoga session at home can help you stay flexible.

Keep the inevitable indulgences in check by staying active. Enjoy some winter sports for a change of pace, or schedule a quick walk or workout before you head to the next party.

Practice the three-bite rule with dessert

It will keep your sweet tooth and calories in check.

Chew slowly

When you chew rapidly, you swallow more air and get more bloated. Plus you will enjoy those holiday flavors even more when you take the time to chew!

Increase your potassium intake

Potassium balances sodium, so you retain less water. Some potassium-rich foods include bananas, papayas, grapefruit, oranges, cantaloupe, asparagus, spinach and broccoli.

Include lots of seasonal, colorful fruits and vegetables

Budget your carbs and drink more water

Cynthia Sass, a well-known registered dietitian, nutrition editor and sports nutrition consultant, said, This time of year, carbs are easy to overdo, and while I dont advocate cutting them out altogether, I do think its smart to corral them. For example, if you packed a slice of moms banana nut bread in your lunch, opt for a salad topped with lean protein instead of a carb-heavy sandwich or wrap, and if youre having potatoes with dinner, ditch the other can-live-without starches, things you wont feel deprived forgoing. Strategy number two, reaching for more water, is not only important for staying hydrated(especially if youll be having some cocktails); its also a smart weight-control strategy. One study found that adults who downed two cups of water before meals shed 40% more weight over a 12-week period, and another found that drinking water before meals naturally led to eating less. And drinking H2O will help you steer clear of both the sugary and artificially sweetened drinks, which both may interfere with controlling your weight.

For more detailed information, the American Heart Association has a full holiday eating guide.

Curcumin for arthritis: Does it really work? – Harvard Health Blog – Harvard Health

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that is the most common type of arthritis. Usually, it occurs among people of advanced age. But it can begin in middle age or even sooner, especially if theres been an injury to the joint.

While there are treatments available exercise, braces or canes, loss of excess weight, various pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medicines these are no cures, and none of the treatments are predictably effective. In fact, often they dont work at all, or help only a little. Injected steroids or synthetic lubricants can be tried as well. When all else fails, joint replacement surgery can be highly effective. In fact, about a million joint replacements (mostly knees and hips) are performed each year in the US.

So, its no surprise that people with osteoarthritis will try just about anything that seems reasonably safe if it might provide relief. My patients often ask about diet, including anti-inflammatory foods, antioxidants, low-gluten diets, and many others. Theres little evidence that most of these dietary approaches work. When there is evidence, it usually demonstrates no consistent or clear benefit.

Thats why a new study is noteworthy: it suggests that curcumin, a naturally occurring substance found in a common spice, might work for osteoarthritis.

In the study, researchers enrolled 139 people with symptoms of knee osteoarthritis. Their symptoms were at least moderately severe and required treatment with a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). For one month, they were given the NSAID diclofenac (50 mg, twice daily) or curcumin (500 mg, three times daily).

Why curcumin? Its a naturally occurring substance, found in the spice turmeric, that has anti-inflammatory effects. Its use has been advocated for cardiovascular health, arthritis, and a host of other conditions. However, well-designed studies of its health benefits are limited.

Heres what this study found:

Not so fast. Its rare that a single study can change practice overnight, and this one is no exception. A number of factors give me pause:

Studies of this sort are vitally important in trying to understand whether dietary changes can be helpful for arthritis. While this new study provides support for curcumin as a treatment for osteoarthritis of the knee, Id like to see more and longer-term studies in osteoarthritis and other types of joint disease, as well as more extensive testing of its safety, before recommending it to my patients.
