If Your Boss Asks You to Work Out More, Don’t and Say You Did – VICE

Worker wellness programs are bad, full stop. Theyre discriminatory, ineffective, and super creepy. (The number Ive steps Ive taken per day are between me and God, i.e., my Fitbit.) Theyre also a bit of a misnomer. It would be more accurate to call them workplace wellness programs, as such programs efforts to improve individual workers physical health and well-being are ultimately in the service of increasing profit. People arent people, per this dystopian view of labor, but rather vectors for productivity that should be eliminated if need be.

You can see this logic at play in a new study on the economic benefits of exercise, as reported by Reuters on Wednesday. According to the study, led by health insurance group Vitality and think tank RAND Europe, employers could boost the world economy by as much as $100 billion a year if they got their workers to exercise more (think: walking 15 minutes daily or jogging every day). Exercising more would extend a persons life expectancy, the study authors say, which will keep that person alive longer, thereby keeping them working and contributing to the global economy for longer. Adding a bit of exercise to a staffers daily routine would also increase their productivity in the workplace as theyd be less likely to get sick and would conceivably take fewer days off from work.

Now, dont get me wrong: Exercising as a form of preventative health care is very real, as exercising regularly has been proven to decrease the likelihood of several chronic diseases. Its certainly not insidious to recommend that. What is unsavory about all this is the line of thinking that masks the desire to increase profit with concern for worker wellnessa logic that might be good for capitalism, but is very bad for people. It measures a workers health in terms of their productivity, equating greater productivity with good health and vice versa. By this logic, a person in poor health will be a detriment to workplace productivity, and becomes just one more expense for employers to cut, wrote labor organizer Lena Solow in a piece about worker wellness programs for The New Republic in September.

Our mental health and physical well-being cannot be measured in terms of workplace performance, and our worth in the global capitalist system cannot be valued in terms of our contribution to the economy. No matter how low your step count for the day might be, its the system thats unwell, not you. If your boss says you have to walk more, just lie and say you did.

Three Months of Full Body Workouts Helped This Guy Get Shredded at 40 – menshealth.com

When Mat Smith and his wife started a family, he decided to cancel his gym membership in favor of what he calls The MatCave. The 40-year-old senior design engineer from Cheltenham, United Kingdom, turned the garage into his own carefully arranged workout space. But then, as often happens, life intervened. Three years later, looking to have a second son, Smith and his wife realized theyd need to move to a new house; the MatCave came along, but Smith devoted most of his time to renovating the new place.

Over four months working in the hot summer weather, he lost 8 pounds, mostly muscle mass. His barely ate while he worked, and spent his days stressed out. (He has obsessive-compulsive disorder, which made rearranging the new place especially challenging.) By the time he finished, he was completely worn down, mentally and physically.

Around that time he happened to see an Instagram post promoting LiveUP, a twelve-week online coaching program for men. He recognized the names involved; hed followed Ultimate Performance founder Nick Mitchells program once before to get in shape for his wedding. He hadnt been able to afford the personal training program, but when he saw there was an online option, he immediately signed up.

It was a new experience for him. Used to working out alone and designing his own programs, he this time gave himself over to his trainer. He cut his workouts from four or five times a week to three, moving from split-body training to full-body workouts. He ramped up his cardio with two interval sessions a week. Along the way he submitted weekly progress photos and found a supportive community of fellow members online.

Smiths trainer had him focus on a balanced diet rich in whole foods. He stopped counting calories and honed in on quantifying serving sizes. He dropped dairy and caffeine. Since starting the nutrition plan I have noticed significant improvement in my overall health and wellbeing, he says. Even still, he admits at the beginning he cheated on the diet because of special social occasions.

He quickly saw changes, and when he finished the program 12 weeks later, hed lost nearly 14 pounds, while his body fat percentage had dropped from more than 15 percent into the eight or nine percent range.

My biggest motivation for maintaining a healthy lifestyle is our 4-year-old son, Smith says. He wants to set a positive example, and remain an active part of his sons life. Hes also discovered a new confidence and belief in himself. Hes eager for the next challenge: maintaining his healthy lifestyle with the impending birth of a second son.

Hes even using his Instagram account to inspire those who, like him, came to fitness later in life, who may find the traditional gym setting intimidating, and who may find exercise useful for their mental healthin the hope that exercise can help others manage their health, the way it has helped me.

Packed house at Senior Living Health and Financial Expo – Brooklyn Reporter

BAY RIDGE The Brooklyn Eagle, Home Reporter and Brooklyn Spectator hosted a well-attended senior living health and financial expo on Friday, Nov. 1 in the grand ballroom of the Dyker Beach Golf Club, 1030 86th Street.

There was food, fun and freebies for those attending, along with informative exhibit tables by hospitals, realtors, law firms, local businesses, and therapists and senior care specialists.

In all, there were over 25 exhibitors at the expo offering information packets, product demonstrations and all kinds of free promotional items. There were raffles, refreshments and prizes galore.

The keynote speakers were NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Islands Dr. Mark Kindschuh, chairperson of emergency medicine, and Renata Landskind and Terence Ricaforte of Landskind & Ricaforte Law Group. Also speaking at the expo were Chip Walker, supervising pharmacist and G.M. at Columbia Care and Steven Williams, community outreach trainer at Accessible Dispatch.

Kindschuh, a board-certified physician who lives in Bay Ridge, spoke first. He has served as chairperson of the Department of Emergency Medicine at NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island since 2016. Kindschuh played a vital role in the transformation of the hospitals emergency department and oversees its services to the South Brooklyn community.

Lets start with the facts, said Kindschuh. You cant really argue with the facts. If you are 65 years or older, you have about a 50 percent chance in a year of ending up in the emergency department. The Baby Boomers have gotten older and were still here. He attributed the majority of visits by senior to such things as falls, taking the wrong medication, poor eyesight and safety issues in the home.

Landskind and Ricaforte oversee a full-service law firm providing estate-planning services to the pre and post-retirement community. They said they were determined to keep their law practice small so that they are able to offer personalized services to their clients that larger law firms cant provide.

The biggest concern people have as they age is the cost of aging and the risks that go along with it, said Ricaforte. Not a lot of people know about it so these expos are tremendous in spreading the knowledge that people need to understand all their options for themselves and their families. Thats why its so important to get the word out. All these vendors here can help all of us as we age, added Ricaforte.

Walker discussed the benefits of medical marijuana. Columbia Care is a medical marijuana dispensary, he explained. It is a legitimate option for your healthcare. What we do for every patient who comes in is talk to you about your medications and past medical history so that we can understand whats going on with all the symptoms youre looking to treat.

He further explained, If you have aches and pains and are taking over-the-counter medications, this is another option to replace some of those medications or add to them to help ease your aches and pains.

Williams was the last to speak. He explained that his company provides wheelchair accessible taxis throughout the five boroughs of New York City. He said that he has worked in the healthcare industry for six years and his goal is to see New York City become a more accessible city.

Everyone is eligible for this program and you dont have to apply or enroll, explained Williams. These are taxis that are larger than a regular taxi and the great thing about the program is that you pay the same fare as a regular taxi cab. You get more for the money with someone trained to assist you and a larger vehicle for easier access. You dont have to be in a wheelchair to use the program, he added.

A number of vendors had participated in earlier expos. Its good to be back at the senior fair, said Louis Peters of United Healthcare AMP Insurance Brokerage, 7709 Fifth Avenue in Bay Ridge. This is a wonderful program where we can see all the vendors. We represent many, many insurance companies and today were thrilled to have the chance to talk to some seniors because this is their insurance election period between Oct. 15 and Dec. 7.

Michael Devigne, program manager for the Fifth Avenue BID, said that his group was working on a number of programs to hopefully roll out more senior discounts and make seniors aware of whats available to them in the BID. Well be doing window decals on the businesses and doing a mailing to let them know about all the great stores there and where they can get senior discounts.

Thomas Ryan, director of marketing at the Menorah Center for Rehabilitation, said that the health expo was an important means of reaching out to the community on a grassroots level and getting the seniors involved.

It offers us an opportunity to let them know about all the options of health care, what we have and what we can do for them, said Ryan. The more education you provide, the more you know, the better services we can give.

Peter Killen, president of the Bay Ridge branch of AARP, said that the expo was invaluable in helping seniors. The companies and organizations that are here are here for the seniors as we are at AARP, said Killen. The Home Reporter, Brooklyn Spectator and Brooklyn Eagle are essential to get all the news out thats important to our citizens and definitely our seniors.

This was the first expo for Kerisha Wynter, supervisor at Humana at Home Senior Bridge Private Pay Services. We are a private paid home care company that provides all the services you need to take care of your loved ones at home, she told this paper.

Franco Ullo of Jag-One Physical Therapy was also making his first appearance at the senior expo. As we get older, there are ways to improve and maintain the quality of life by exercising mobility and were here to help that community thrive.

Stretched Out, a new business that offers therapeutic sports and wellness services at its location at 8121 Third Avenue in Bay Ridge, announced that it was offering free exercise and therapy sessions to veterans and service members for one day. On Veterans Day, were going to close down to our clients and were going to serve only the military, John Brancato told this paper.

Other exhibitors at the expo included Advanced Hearing Center, Ben Bay Realty/HSBC, FDNY, Caption Call, Investors Bank, Island Federal Credit Union, Island Shores, Northfield Bank, Norwegian Christian Home, NY Connects Dept. of Aging, OHEL, Prudential, Senior Bridge, Therapy-in-Motion and Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology.

Russell Craig Targove was the master of ceremonies at the expo and there were also blood pressure screenings and other activities throughout each event.

Guests were exceedingly pleased with the scope of the expo. Ive been to these before and I really find them very energizing and informative because all the groups that are here service our community in Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights, said attendee June Johnson.

Veteran Bill Humienny also said it was important to come to an event like this because of the information offered. You learn about all the different doctors, hospitals and lawyers, said Humienny. Ive come to a couple of these and this is one of the best Ive been to.

Tommy Chong: The Real-Life Diet of the Man Who Knows the Secret to Beating the Munchies – GQ

A man who dances the tango rules the world, says Tommy Chong, the reefer king of Cheech & Chong fame. Hes not speaking about his younger yearsChong is still doing the tango now, at 81, after first showing off his abilities in season 19 of Dancing with the Stars. He attributes his long-enduring physical fitness to genetics, among other factors; while chatting with me on the phone from a casino, he sounds as sharp as ever, his voice warm and rumbly.

When hes not lighting up the slot machines or dancing the night away, Chong sticks to his bread-and-butter: stand-up and sketch comedy, and advocacy for the legalization of marijuana. Weed, he says, has played a central role in his relatively good health over the years, and helped him cope when he was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2016. (He is now in remission, and feeling great.)

During our conversation, Chong expounds on the health benefits of marijuana, his all-time favorite ways to exercise, and he also unveils what is, by far, the worlds most ingenious solution for beating the munchies.

GQ: If youll allow it, I was truly taken aback to learn youre 81you look great! Do you maintain a wellness or fitness regiment?

Tommy Chong: Well, when I was a kid, I played football, which is what got me interested in exercise. Its where I learned about calisthenics, and running, and lifting weights. Its a combination of weightlifting and spiritual wellness for me.

When did you start lifting weights?

Ive been lifting weights since I was 15 years old, but trust me, I was not a natural at it. I ended up moving out to Hollywood to do a movie, and I signed up with a trainer. It was this guy named Vince Gironda, and he had a special at his gym: 25 bucks and well get you in shape for a movie. He got me in the best shape of my life for Up in Smoke. He gave me a big lecture on how to maintain a diet and such. Ive just been following that routine to this day. Oh, and I invented a knee machine for myself.

A knee machine?

Yeah, I grew up poor so everything that cost moneysports like golf, or skiing, or whateverI didnt try out until later in life. When I started skiing, I realized I couldnt ski on moguls because it takes a lot of balance and its a big stress on your knees. So I invented this knee machine, I call it the bouncer. Its a skateboard stretched between four springs on a frame, and I just bounce on it like Im going over moguls. I should really put it on the market once I get it all togetherafter all, Ive only been working on it for 30 years now! It helps me with my circulation, and thats a huge part of keeping yourself healthy. I use that, and do a lot of walking, and have my tai chi, which is tango.

Tango? Like, the dance?

Yeah, Im a tango dancer. Ive been studying tango for years now. I love it. Ive tried to tell everybody about it, but people wont listen to me. Ive walked into classes and just had a blast dancing with people. With tango, the male dancer has to know what hes doing, because hes the lead. When I was on Dancing with the Stars, the pros they partner you with will back-lead the dance. So Ive been trying to get rid of that habit and learn how to lead the dance for the last couple of years. Thats why Im still taking lessons and classes, because you never stop learning to dance. My wifewho is gorgeouslikes to dance tango as well. Its fun, and it keeps things exciting. My other bit of advice for old guys is to check out the new fashion magazines, and do what they say.

Dance is such a wonderful exercise, and I dont think people always realize that.

Fruits of youth: Consider this your guide to an anti-aging diet – Elk Valley Times

There are several well-known factors that contribute to aging: smoking, stress, sun exposure and genetics, among them. But what you may not realize is what you put on your plate can also cause you to look beyond your year.

Everything that goes into your mouth affects your aging cycle, says Tina Martini, chef and author of "Delicious Medicine: The Healing Power of Food." Among the offenders are alcohol, refined sugar, and over-processed and fried foods.

When you eat fresh foods, as close to nature as you can get, you can slow down the effects of damage to your cells, thus slowing the aging process, she says.

One of the main damaging factors is acrylamide, an organic compound that is produced during the frying process of some starchy foods. This has led the American Cancer Society to recommend limiting French fries, potato chips, foods made from grains breakfast cereals, cookies, toast because they tend to have higher levels of this chemical.

Acrylamide can affect the skin in the same way that sun damage does, says Martini.

Reduce your exposure by soaking raw potato slices in water for 15 to 30 minutes and draining before frying or roasting. Also, when cooking, choose boiling or steaming to stop acrylamide from forming.

Sugar is the main source of energy for our bodies, but it can also contribute to a process called glycation. The excess sugar molecules attach to proteins, creating "advanced glycation end products" or AGEs, which are linked to the loss of collagen. Losing collagen can lead to wrinkles and creepy skin.

Remove processed sugary foods from your diet and eat fresh vegetables and fruits, says Lorraine Kearney, BASc, NDTR, an adjunct lecturer at the City University of New York. To get the maximum nutrients from fruits enjoy them whole instead of dried, blended or pureed.

Snack on organic peaches, cherries, apples and strawberries as they can help to fight the signs of aging.

Enriched and Fortified Foods

You will often find the words enriched and fortified on labels of prepackaged foods. Those words generally mean that all the nutrients were removed during processing, and the manufacturer put back what they deemed important. A diet high in processed foods can lead to oxidative stress, which occurs due to an imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants in your body and may lead to cell damage.

Eating a diet rich in colorful foods increases the amount of nutrients the body needs to heal on the cellular level, Kearney says.

Stock up on fresh and antioxidant-rich foods like blackberries, blueberries, beets, bell peppers and radishes as they mitigate the effects of oxidative stress.

While drinking some alcohols in moderation is known to have beneficial health effects, overuse can cause wrinkles, puffiness, inflammation and dehydration.

While you should always remain hydrated, be extra mindful when consuming spirits; and instead of having a full glass of wine, enjoy a spritzer made with seltzer. Staying hydrated not only keeps your skin supple but also flushes toxins from the body.

Skin care is very important in protecting our skin, but its really the moisture in our bodies that keeps us radiant, says Martini.

Does the blood type diet actually work? – KENS5.com

SAN ANTONIO The blood type diet originated from a naturopathic physician and author, Dr. Peter D'Adamo. He wrote a book called "Eat Right for Type" in 1996. He claims that your blood profile is connected to specific exercises and foods that can help you achieve your ideal weight.

"The theory behind it, is that we somehow carry the genetic traits," explained Annie Bell, registered dietitian at Fit Therapy of Texas. "Different blood types are tied to the ability to absorb and utilize certain nutrients in food."

The book breaks down the four different blood types and lists recommendations.

Type A blood:It's suggested to eat dark leafy greens, soy and olive oil. But refined sugar, mushrooms and beef should be avoided. It claims yoga is an effective workout.

Type B blood:Green vegetables, eggs and liver can help in weight loss. However, foods such as chicken, corn or wheat are not good. Hiking, cycling and swimming are recommended as exercises

Type AB blood:You should eat green vegetables and tofu but avoid chicken, beans or corn. Yoga, tennis and cycling are recommended as effective workouts.

Type O blood:You should eat high-protein foods and avoid dairy or wheat. It's suggested that high-intensity workouts are the best.

Bell said while the diet sounds believable, there's not enough scientific evidence to back it up. There hasn't been enough research done in peer-reviewed studies to solidify the claims. The registered dietitian added that the suggestions focus on what's already proven to lose weight.

"In all of the plans, he's addressing nutrition, physical activity, mental health and stress management," Bell said. "I think perhaps, people want something to blame their bad habits on: 'Oh, it's my blood type,' or it could also be they want that individualized approach."

Lycia Torres, a personal trainer at Fit Therapy of Texas, said: "Our system is one full system. It all integrates from our internal gut. If our internal gut is healthy, every part of our body will be. It's really important to get moving, even if its 15 minutes a day."

Bell and Torres are in agreement that the blood type diet recommendations aren't harmful and may work for some people. But the bottom line is it has nothing to do with your blood type.

"Exercise is hard. Changing your diet can be hard, sure, but starting out with diet and gradually adding exercise to it, will really make a difference in your life," Bell said.

Meet The Doctor’s Maid Who Inspired The Mediterranean Diet – Worldcrunch

CILENTO She wrote the most significant chapter in the culinary history of Italy, and didn't even know it. And all because of a respect for tradition and visceral love for her land: Cilento.

Located in the southwestern province of Salerno, Cilento is the envy today of countries like the United States and Russia, where globalization has caused a spike in instances of obesity and chronic diseases. It's also where maid and top-chef Delia Martinelli, 82 with her ladle and pots returned Italy to the top of a singular ranking as the country with the best cuisine in the world, both in terms of taste and health benefits.

For more than 30 years, from 1965 to 2000, she was the maid of the Keys household. It's a surname that in Pioppi, a small fishing village with some 200 inhabitants in the dead of winter, is as well known as that of Vassallo, the mayor of a neighboring commune gunned down in 2010 by members of the Camorra crime syndicate. A surname that, for adepts beyond the village borders, is code for the Mediterranean diet, which is more a way of life than a simple dietary regimen, and was recognized in 2010 as part of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity by UNESCO.

Feeding the family

It was in this capacity that Donna Delia found herself as a living witness to what became the career of Ancel Keys, the American physiologist who died a centenarian in 2004 after having chosen this stretch of Salerno shoreline as his dwelling of choice for four decades: for work and for pleasure.

Aside from eating well, we move a lot and we are never alone.

Arriving in Naples in the 1950s, where rates of cardiovascular-related deaths were very low, the doctor decided to remain in Campania and to settle in Pioppi for extended periods of the year, taking many of the local dietary habits as his own. It was here, nestled between the steep hill of Pollica and the deep blue sea, that the scientist reached his most significant conclusions.

Comparing the dietary habits and rates of cardiovascular disease of the inhabitants of Salerno with those of six other nations, Keys showed that the main risk factors for heart and artery health are found, in addition to smoking, in the levels of animal fat present in the diet. He also discovered, interestingly enough, that the poor often eat better than the rich.

Thus, the myth of the Mediterranean diet was born, characterized by a large consumption of plant-based foods. Olives, chestnuts, figs, endives, Cicerale chickpeas and Controne beans are distinctive elements of the diet during this season. But in the fields and on the boats, the work is year-round: cultivating wheat, caring for lemon trees, picking vegetables and bringing anchovies to shore.

In Cilento, where Delia's son and his wife run a small trattoria often frequented by researchers from the oldest and most prestigious European and American universities, traditions persist. Signora Delia answers the phone at 7 p.m., but it is still early for dinner. "We eat little in the evening: some anchovies with lemon, a piece of bread, a glass of wine and fruit," she says.

Plenty of time, then, to reminisce. "When I arrived at the Keys house, I was 25 and had never been out to work before. But it didn't take me long to get acclimated. I was a housekeeper, like so many others, who took care of all the household chores. I immediately understood, however, that Mister Ancel and his wife Margareth were very interested in my cooking," Delia recalls.

We're not used to having rag often in my house.

That interest seemed strange to someone who recognized as tradition what two Americans considered an absolute novelty. After a few weeks, the "Kissi" couple, as Delia pronounces it, began to ask so many questions about the dishes that ended up on their table every day.

"The professor loved lentil and bean soups, but also anchovies and garden olives," she says. Delia cooked with what the vegetable garden offered, nothing more. "We used simple sauces as condiments, every now and then seasoned with fish. We're not used to having rag often in my house."

What she did use were lots of anchovies, which made their way into the dishes just hours after being unloaded from the boat of Signore Giannino, Delia's husband. "He spent a lifetime at sea," she explains. "He would go out every night and came back in the early morning when I was ready to start work at the Keys house."

Nourishing the heart

Delia gave a lot of herself to the Keys, but the exchange of knowledge went both ways. You can hear it in the way she talks about kilocalories, food pyramids and preventive medicine. And on the subject of why people in Cilento live longer than average, her ideas are clear.

"Aside from eating well, we move a lot and we are never alone," she says. "Having the ones we hold dear close to us is like eating a sweet every day" the difference being that such emotion nourishes the heart without expanding the waistline.

The ultimate goal is to establish a research institute on the Mediterranean diet in Pioppi.

For this reason, in an attempt to recover a lifestyle that is now largely lost in Italy, there are ever more legions of tourists choosing to immerse themselves in one of the 80 communes of Cilento National Park, Vallo di Diano and the Alburni mountain range. Their mission: a return to the origins.

"The Mediterranean diet must become a model of social, economic and cultural development," says Stefano Pisani, who took over as mayor after his predecessor, the fisherman Angelo Vassallo, was killed in a Camorra ambush in 2010. "Health advantages aside, this lifestyle has reduced our impact on the environment. Joining our cause means defending the planet during this crucial phase, in light of the ongoing climate change."

Considering that on the other side of the Atlantic, people are ready to spend hundreds of euros to receive a bottle of extra virgin olive oil pressed in Cilento, the ultimate goal is to establish a research institute on the Mediterranean diet in Pioppi.

"All this acquired knowledge must be integrated into the technological developments of our era, so that we don't lose it," continues Pisani. Something almost unimaginable for Nonna Delia, though it is already done by way of history books.

"I never would have imagined it, but I've lived like a queen here in the heart of Pioppi."
