Opinion | The Myth of Testosterone – The New York Times

These complexities hold in track and field events, too. Even the International Association of Athletics Federations own analysis of testosterone and performance, involving more than 1,100 women competing in track and field events, shows that for six of the 11 running events, women with lower testosterone actually did better than those with higher levels.

In other words, for most sports, testosterone levels do not correlate with superior performance. And yet even in the face of overwhelming evidence, the myths are so deeply ingrained in our assumptions about gender and athletics that the highest governing body in sports believes otherwise.

The obvious result is discrimination against female athletes such as Semenya who have naturally high levels of testosterone. But the harm doesnt stop there.

The athletics association insists that Semenya can still compete, as long as she undergoes medically unnecessary interventions to lower her testosterone level. (Because the testosterone rules have not yet gone into effect, she was able to run and win the womens 800-meter race at a meet in Doha on Friday.) The association underplays the risk of such measures, saying women with high testosterone can lower their levels dramatically by taking an oral contraceptive.

But hormonal contraceptives are often not enough to get testosterone down to the arbitrary permissible level. This means athletes must take stronger drugs, and endure chronic, significant side effects.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport expressed concern about these side effects, saying they could make compliance a practical impossibility for athletes. In fact, for that reason the court said its decision was provisional, and that the harms would need to be tracked.

Nevertheless, the International Association of Athletics Federations president, Seb Coe, gave reason for worry when asked whether he would delay the regulations for the 1,500-meter and the mile races regulated events for which the court said there was no evidence of a difference in performance among athletes with different testosterone levels. Showing a blatant disregard for caution, Coe simply replied, No, leaving us to wonder who will monitor the degree of harm, and how will problems be reported and recorded as they arise. How much harm will be acceptable to the court before it reconsiders its position?

How to lose weight and keep it off, according to science …

One reason many dieters curb their fat intake besides the lingering influence of the low-fat dieting trend of the 1990s is that it's an easy way to cut calories. Fat is high in calories. Trim the fat, trim the calories.

But research is starting to show that eating fat does not necessarily lead us to put on pounds. Instead, it may help people lose weight, perhaps by making us feel full and curbing our sugar consumption. This appears to be especially true for fats from sources like nuts, olive oil, avocados, and fish.

"There is one thing we know about fats. Fat consumption does not cause weight gain. To the contrary, it might actually help us shed a few pounds," Aaron Carroll, a professor of pediatrics at the Indiana University School of Medicine, wrote in his book, "The Bad Food Bible: How and Why to Eat Sinfully."

Here's what that means for people who are counting their calories: Fatty foods are higher in calories than their low-fat equivalents, so to account for that and cut back on carbs and sugar instead.

Occupational Therapy Home Exercise Programs | SportsRec

Occupational therapy home exercise programs can help individuals of all ages, ranging from children to seniors afflicted with medical conditions that include stroke and musculoskeletal abnormalities. Occupational therapy emphasizes the emotional, social and physiological effects of injury or illness. Done consistently, exercises can help individuals recuperate properly in preparation for returning to a functional lifestyle. Check with your doctor before starting any new exercise program.

Occupational therapy home exercise programs can increase your shoulder area range of motion, according to HEP2go.com. Use either a cane, broomstick or wand for this sitting or standing exercise. Bend your elbows to a 90-degree angle so your forearms are parallel to the floor. Place the item in your hands, holding it palms facing upward. Gently and slowly move the item to your right while feeling your shoulder joint rotate. Hold this position five seconds. Return to the center position. Relax 10 seconds. Slowly swing the item to your left. Hold this position five seconds. Return to the original position. Relax 10 seconds. During this maneuver, your unaffected arm does most of the work while your affected-side arm stays partially relaxed. Do this exercise five times to each side. Do not move your back during this exercise.

Walking needs to be included in an occupational therapy home exercise program to help individuals return to the functioning level available prior to injury, according to the American Heart Association. Walking aids in overall muscle strengthening and flexibility, and it can help to improve your capability of performing every day tasks such as lifting items and improving exercise tolerance. It can enhance blood lipid levels and cardiovascular fitness, improve oxygen intake and utilization while also increasing independence levels. If walking is too difficult, walking on a treadmill offers the advantage of using harnesses and rail supports. Walking for a minimum of 20 minutes on at least three days weekly is recommended.

Occupational therapy home exercise programs can increase your upper body flexibility through trunk rotations, according to HEP2go.com. Sit upright in a firm chair with your feet firmly planted on the floor. Lift your arms and cross them over your chest, palms lying flat on your upper chest. Rest your fingertips against your shoulder area. Slowly and gently rotate your upper body to the right as far as possible. Keep your head aligned with your shoulders, do not rotate your neck. Hold this stretch for 10 seconds. Feel the stretch along your abdominal, back and waist area. Slowly return to the original position. Relax 10 seconds. Repeat this exercise three times.

Occupational therapy home exercise programs can improve body balance while strengthening your leg muscles, according to HEP2go.com. Stand upright with your feet shoulder-width apart. Do a modified leg balancing exercise by lifting your right foot, placing your body weight onto your left foot. Keep your right knee slightly bent and maintain your balance. Gently and slowly move your right foot behind your body. Hold this position for as long as possible. Slowly return your leg to the original position. Relax 10 seconds. Repeat this exercise five times with both legs.

Sermorelin vs HGH – Know The Difference | Nu Image Medical

Human Growth Hormone, also known as hGH, has been utilized in recent years as a therapy for anti-aging. This particular growth hormone, produced by recombinant gene technology, is given to help restore youthful vitality making patients feel and look younger. Even though it has been proven effective for the aging patient, supplemental human growth hormone can unfortunately lead to medical and legal problems when used. Here are some main differences with Sermorelin vs HGH.

This all being said, there may be an alternative therapy that bypasses legal restriction and medical problems Sermorelin is a form of Growth Releasing Factor (GRF). Sermorelin is a small peptide containing only 29 amino acids while hGH, on the other hand, is a large molecule containing 191 amino acids. However, studies have shown that it is only the first 29 amino acids out of the full 44 amino acids in GRF that stimulate pituitary secretion of human growth hormone. Therefore, the chemical name of Sermorelin is GRH 1-29. Sermorelin is currently the only product currently available that has the ability to enhance the effects of hGH.

In HGH Therapy, the main difference is Sermorelin is a secretagogue. This means, it is not growth hormone itself, but it actually stimulates the pituitary gland to produce more growth hormone naturally. This gives the body the benefits of hGH without giving the actual hormone. This bypass of injected hGH prevents many problems. Unlike Sermorelin, when you use hgh injections, it accumulates in the body. Levels of exogenous hormone increase for a while and then drop back down suddenly. Patients taking HGH often experience benefits for a period of time and then the effects abruptly stop. It then takes more and more medication to produce the same original effect, and taking too much can lead to severe HGH side effects. Because Sermorelin stimulates growth hormone production naturally, it is typically much more safe than hGH. With Sermorelin, the body attempts to self regulate how much or how high hormone levels can get. This type of regulation is referred to as normal feedback; a protection mechanism of the body. When levels, get too high, normal feedback mechanisms help bring levels to a more safe and steady state. This regulation of the body prevents the square wave pattern seen with hGH, thus preventing sudden drops of hormone levels.

There are over the counter secretagogues that are said to increase HGH levels much like Sermorelin. These products such as L-glutamine, L-dopa, L-arganine, L-orirnithine, glycine, ornithine alpha-ketoglutarate and herbs such as Macuna pruriens and Tribulus terrestris are amino acids that, in high doses, may elicit a small release of HGH from the pituitary. However, their effect is non-specific and typically intermittent and unreliable because they do not work on any specific receptor on the pituitary gland. High doses of amino acids can also produce kidney problems. Because Sermorelins action mimics the bodys naturally occurring growth hormone releasing process, this is not an issue.

The only method of administration currently available for Sermorelin is by subcutaneous injection. However, it is a much smaller molecule than HGH, and it may be possible in the future to administer it through the nasal mucosa with a spray form. Even though HGH and Sermorelin work at different places in the body (Sermorelin at the pituitary and HGH at the liver), the dosages are comparable. It takes the same amount of material of both products to raise the serum IGF-1. Typically, Sermorelin is prescribed in micrograms and HGH in international units (IU). Sermorelin cost is also much lower than HGH, and one vial of Sermorelin provides more daily doses than one vial of HGH. The timing of the daily Sermorelin injection is also important. Sermorelin is given once a day at bedtime. Timing the injection prior to sleep is important because Sermorelin complements the bodys natural production and release of Growth Releasing Factor during sleep.

In the battle of Sermorelin vs HGH, it is clear using Sermorelin in place of hGH has numerous benefits. It not only is cost effective and easier to obtain, but it is more importantly a more safe as well as effective supplement for increased growth hormone production within the body.

Let our team lead you in the right direction as we work together towards a healthier you!

The HCG Diet Food List – Your MUST Follow Guide (Jan 2019)

If youve recently stepped on the scale and were unhappy with the number you saw, or have known for a while that you have weight you need to lose, but regular diets werent helping, you may be interested in the HCG diet. There are a lot of questions about the diet, after all, youre mostly on your own unless you see a medical office each week.

The HCG diet has been the same since the 1950s, when Dr. Simeons manuscript, Pounds and Inches was released, prompting thousands to take action against their unwanted weight gain. The diet is very specific in what you can, and cannot eat, and even steers clear of vigorous exercise, making it very different from most other diet protocols. While the HCG diet itself can seem fairly extreme, those who have done it can count on the diet to help them lose weight quickly, and get started on a healthier lifestyle.

The HCG diet is a very specifically laid out diet plan with a few phases to ensure you lose the large amount of weight in a very short time period. The diet is laid out into four different phases, each with its own rules and foods that can be eaten. The most important part of the diet is taking your daily amount of HCG. This amount can be different based on a few different factors, including your weight and BMI, but it must be taken daily during the first two phases.

The HCG can be taken in a few different ways, but injections and drops are the most popular. Injections are by prescription only, while drops can be found in prescription and homeopathic varieties. There are quite a few reviews on different companies you can order from, so be sure you do your research.

Phase 1: Eat whatever you like for a couple of days in order to refill your fat reserves. It may seem counter-intuitive, but dieters should not do the diet without this phase.

Phase 2: The very low calorie portion of the diet, in which you have to follow the specific 500 calorie diet plan.

Phase 3: During the stabilization phaseyou can slowly add new foods into your diet but need to avoid starchand sugar.

Phase 4: The maintenance phase where you reintroduce carbs and sugar back into your diet. A return to the real world of food!

The diet can be done a few times if you have a lot of weight to lose, but it should be noted that if you go back to your usual eating habits once the diet is over, youll gain the weight back, so the diet should be used as a way to reevaluate your diet and move forward in a healthy way.

The types of foods you can eat on an HCG meal plan are chosen for their fat, sugar, and carbohydrate amounts. You may only eat 200 grams of protein a day, twice a day, and you only eat two meals a day, lunch and dinner. During the 500 calorie diet phase you can drink coffee, water, and tea as much as you like, given you do not add sugar to your drinks, only stevia.

The food list is short, but its necessary, and many dieters recommend buying organic, or all-natural versions of the foods, which are easy to find these days in your regular grocery store. Only melba toast or grissini is allowed, very sparingly, but you can continue to use seasonings as long as they do not have oil or butter.

200 grams of protein a day, twice a day:

Crab

Extra lean, grass-fed Beef

Buffalo

Egg Whites (3)

Chicken

Scallops

Two cups per day, one cup per meal:

Onions

Green Salads

Asparagus

Celery

Broccoli

Spinach

Fennel

Cauliflower

Chard

Shallots

Tomatoes

Red Radish

Cabbage

Cucumbers

Beet Greens

Mixed Greens

Grapefruit

Apples

Strawberries

The food list for the diet is limited, but that doesnt mean you have to eat bland foods for weeks. The HCG diet is meant to give you a new perspective on what you eat, and to help you let go of bad eating habits, such as drinking excessive amounts of soda. Weve compiled a couple of great recipes in order to help you through your diet, and give you new options on your meal plans.

HCG 500 Calorie Diet Recipes

Chicken Stir Fry with Garlic Broccoli

3.5 oz Chicken Breast10 cloves of garlic1 cup of broccoli

2 Tbsp Water

1 Tbsp Bragg's Liquid Aminos

Since you are not using oil, you will need to use water and amino acids. Steam the broccoli for about 2 minutes, and stir it in with your cooked chicken into a pan. Add garlic, and liquid amino acid to taste.

Taco Wraps

100 grams of lean ground beef

2 tbsp diced onion

2 tsp ground cumin

2 tsp green onion

Cilantro

1 tsp chicken bouillon (check for sugar content)

1-2 tsp chili powder

Lettuce Leaves

In a pan, combine hamburger and onion and cook until beef is browned. Add in your spices, and serve in lettuce leaves, topping with cilantro.

Strawberry Slush Dessert

3 large strawberries

1 cup of ice

cup of cold water

10 drops of vanilla creme flavored stevia

Use a blender or food processor and crush the ice until it becomes powdery. Add in your other ingredients and puree until smooth.

The HCG diet can seem intimidating at first, with all of the rules, limited calorie intake and even daily injections. With new foods and even ways to get your daily HCG without an injection, the HCG diet has come a long way from the 1950s.

With careful planning, and determination, the HCG diet can be done successfully by just about anyone who sets their mind to it!

Low-carb diet: Can it help you lose weight? – Mayo Clinic

Low-carb diet: Can it help you lose weight?

Could a low-carb diet give you an edge in losing weight? Help you keep weight off permanently? Here's what you need to know about the low-carb diet.

A low-carb diet limits carbohydrates such as those found in grains, starchy vegetables and fruit and emphasizes foods high in protein and fat. Many types of low-carb diets exist. Each diet has varying restrictions on the types and amounts of carbohydrates you can eat.

A low-carb diet is generally used for losing weight. Some low-carb diets may have health benefits beyond weight loss, such as reducing risk factors associated with type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

You might choose to follow a low-carb diet because you:

Check with your doctor before starting any weight-loss diet, especially if you have any health conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease.

As the name says, a low-carb diet restricts the type and amount of carbohydrates you eat. Carbohydrates are a type of calorie-providing macronutrient found in many foods and beverages.

Carbohydrates can be simple or complex. They can further be classified as simple refined (table sugar), simple natural (lactose in milk and fructose in fruit), complex refined (white flour) and complex natural (whole grains or beans).

Common sources of naturally occurring carbohydrates include:

Food manufacturers also add refined carbohydrates to processed foods in the form of sugar or white flour. Examples of foods that contain refined carbohydrates are white breads and pasta, cookies, cake, candy, and sugar-sweetened sodas and drinks.

Your body uses carbohydrates as its main fuel source. Complex carbohydrates (starches) are broken down into simple sugars during digestion. They're then absorbed into your bloodstream, where they're known as blood sugar (glucose). In general, natural complex carbohydrates are digested more slowly and they have less effect on blood sugar. Natural complex carbohydrates provide bulk and serve other body functions beyond fuel.

Rising levels of blood sugar trigger the body to release insulin. Insulin helps glucose enter your body's cells. Some glucose is used by your body for energy, fueling all of your activities, whether it's going for a jog or simply breathing. Extra glucose is usually stored in your liver, muscles and other cells for later use or is converted to fat.

The idea behind the low-carb diet is that decreasing carbs lowers insulin levels, which causes the body to burn stored fat for energy and ultimately leads to weight loss.

In general, a low-carb diet focuses on proteins, including meat, poultry, fish and eggs, and some nonstarchy vegetables. A low-carb diet generally excludes or limits most grains, legumes, fruits, breads, sweets, pastas and starchy vegetables, and sometimes nuts and seeds. Some low-carb diet plans allow small amounts of certain fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

A daily limit of 0.7 to 2 ounces (20 to 60 grams) of carbohydrates is typical with a low-carb diet. These amounts of carbohydrates provide 80 to 240 calories. Some low-carb diets greatly restrict carbs during the initial phase of the diet and then gradually increase the number of allowed carbs.

In contrast, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends that carbohydrates make up 45 to 65 percent of your total daily calorie intake. So if you consume 2,000 calories a day, you would need to eat between 900 and 1,300 calories a day from carbohydrates.

Most people can lose weight if they restrict the number of calories consumed and increase physical activity levels. To lose 1 to 1.5 pounds (0.5 to 0.7 kilogram) a week, you need to reduce your daily calories by 500 to 750 calories.

Low-carb diets, especially very low-carb diets, may lead to greater short-term weight loss than do low-fat diets. But most studies have found that at 12 or 24 months, the benefits of a low-carb diet are not very large. A 2015 review found that higher protein, low-carbohydrate diets may offer a slight advantage in terms of weight loss and loss of fat mass compared with a normal protein diet.

Cutting calories and carbs may not be the only reason for the weight loss. Some studies show that you may shed some weight because the extra protein and fat keeps you feeling full longer, which helps you eat less.

Low-carb diets may help prevent or improve serious health conditions, such as metabolic syndrome, diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. In fact, almost any diet that helps you shed excess weight can reduce or even reverse risk factors for cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Most weight-loss diets not just low-carb diets may improve blood cholesterol or blood sugar levels, at least temporarily.

Low-carb diets may improve high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and triglyceride values slightly more than do moderate-carb diets. That may be due not only to how many carbs you eat but also to the quality of your other food choices. Lean protein (fish, poultry, legumes), healthy fats (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated) and unprocessed carbs such as whole grains, legumes, vegetables, fruits and low-fat dairy products are generally healthier choices.

A report from the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology and the Obesity Society concluded that there isn't enough evidence to say whether most low-carbohydrate diets provide heart-healthy benefits.

If you suddenly and drastically cut carbs, you may experience a variety of temporary health effects, including:

In addition, some diets restrict carbohydrate intake so much that in the long term they can result in vitamin or mineral deficiencies, bone loss and gastrointestinal disturbances and may increase risks of various chronic diseases.

Because low-carb diets may not provide necessary nutrients, these diets aren't recommended as a method of weight loss for preteens and high schoolers. Their growing bodies need the nutrients found in whole grains, fruits and vegetables.

Severely restricting carbohydrates to less than 0.7 ounces (20 grams) a day can result in a process called ketosis. Ketosis occurs when you don't have enough sugar (glucose) for energy, so your body breaks down stored fat, causing ketones to build up in your body. Side effects from ketosis can include nausea, headache, mental and physical fatigue, and bad breath.

It's not clear what kind of possible long-term health risks a low-carb diet may pose because most research studies have lasted less than a year. Some health experts believe that if you eat large amounts of fat and protein from animal sources, your risk of heart disease or certain cancers may actually increase.

If you follow a low-carbohydrate diet that's higher in fat and possibly higher in protein, it's important to choose foods with healthy unsaturated fats and healthy proteins. Limit foods containing saturated and trans fats, such as meat, high-fat dairy products, and processed crackers and pastries.
