Which diet is best for long-term weight loss? – Harvard …

Much has been made of the recently published results of the DIETFITS (Diet Intervention Examining the Factors Interacting with Treatment Success) study. Most of the headlines emphasized the fact that the two diets involved low-fat and low-carb ended up having the same results across almost all end points studied, from weight loss to lowering blood sugar and cholesterol.

Whats most interesting, however, is how these two diets are similar.

The authors wanted to compare low-fat vs. low-carb diets, but they also wanted to study genetic and physical makeups that purportedly (their word) could influence how effective each type of diet will be for people. Previous studies had suggested that a difference in a particular genetic sequence could mean that certain people will do better with a low-fat diet. Other studies had suggested that insulin sensitivity may mean that certain people will do better with a low-carb diet.

The study began with 609 relatively healthy overweight and obese people, and 481 completed the whole year. For the first month, everyone did what they usually did. Then, for the next eight weeks, the low-fat group reduced their total fat intake to 20 grams per day, and the low-carb group reduced their total carbohydrate intake to 20 grams per day. These are incredibly restricted amounts, considering that there are 26 grams of carbs in the yogurt drink Im enjoying as I write this, and 21 grams of fat in my half of the dark chocolate bar my husband and I split for dessert last night.

That kind of dietary restriction is impossible to maintain over the long term and, as this study showed, unnecessary. Participants were instructed to slowly add back fats or carbs until they reached a level they felt could be maintained for life. In addition, both groups were instructed to

People were not asked to count calories at all. Over the course of a year, both groups attended 22 classes reinforcing these very sound principles and all participants had access to health educators who guided them in behavioral modification strategies, such as emotional awareness, setting goals, developing self-efficacy (also known as willpower), and utilizing social support networks, all to avoid falling back into unhealthy eating patterns.

Participants in both groups also were encouraged to maintain current US government physical activity recommendations, which are 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic physical activity (2 hours and 30 minutes) each week.

Get all that? Basically, the differences between groups were minimal. Yes, the low-fat group dropped their daily fat intake and the low-carb group dropped their daily carb intake. But both groups ended up taking in 500 to 600 calories less per day than they had before, and both lost the same average amount of weight (12 pounds) over the course of a year. Those genetic and physical makeups didnt result in any differences either. The only measure that was different was that the LDL (low density lipoprotein) was significantly lower in the low-fat group, and the HDL (high density lipoprotein) was significantly higher in the low-carb group.

I love this study because it examined a realistic lifestyle change rather than just a fad diet. Both groups, after all, were labeled as healthy diets, and they were, because study investigators encouraged eating high-quality, nutritious whole foods, unlimited vegetables, and avoiding flours, sugars, bad fats, and processed foods. Everyone was encouraged to be physically active at a level most Americans are not. And this is a big one everyone had access to basic behavioral counseling aimed at reducing emotional eating.

This whole study could just as well be called a study of sustainable healthy lifestyle change. The results jibe very much with prior research about healthy lifestyle. The end message is the same one that we usually end with:

The best diet is the one we can maintain for life and is only one piece of a healthy lifestyle. People should aim to eat high-quality, nutritious whole foods, mostly plants (fruits and veggies), and avoid flours, sugars, trans fats, and processed foods (anything in a box). Everyone should try to be physically active, aiming for about two and a half hours of vigorous activity per week. For many people, a healthy lifestyle also means better stress management, and perhaps even therapy to address emotional issues that can lead to unhealthy eating patterns.

Diet, Medieval Latin Dieta, German Reichstag, legislature of the German empire, or Holy Roman Empire, from the 12th century to 1806.

In the Carolingian empire, meetings of the nobility and higher clergy were held during the royal progresses, or court journeys, as occasion arose, to make decisions affecting the good of the state. After 1100, definitively, the emperor called the Diet to meet in an imperial or episcopal city within the imperial frontiers. The members of the Diet were originally the princes, including bishops of princely status, but counts and barons were included later. After 1250 the representatives of imperial and episcopal cities were recognized as members of the Diet, and at this time the electoral princes, whose duty it was to elect the emperor, began to meet separately, a division formally confirmed in the Golden Bull of Charles IV (1356), which established the number of the electoral princes as seven. Beginning in the 12th century the power of the emperor gradually declined; by 1489 the Diet was divided into three colleges that met separately: (1) the electoral college of seven lay and ecclesiastical princes presided over by the imperial chancellor, the archbishop of Mainz; (2) the college of the princes with 33 ecclesiastical princes and 61 lay princes, presided over by the archbishop of Salzburg or the archduke of Austria; (3) the college of the cities presided over by the representative of the city in which the Diet met. The college of cities was separated eventually into the Rhine and Swabian divisions, the former having 14 towns and the latter 37.

The decisions taken separately by the three colleges were combined in an agreed statement the text of which was sent to the emperor as the resolution of the empire (conclusum imperii). All the decisions of the Diet forming the resolution were called the recess of the empire (Reichsabschied). The emperor could ratify part of the recess or the whole of it, but he could not modify the words of the recess. Until the 17th century the Diet possessed effective legal power, including the decision of war or peace, but the Peace of Westphalia (1648) spelled the final breakdown in the conception of a single German empire united by its members common aims. The three-college Diet was replaced by an assembly of sovereign princes, usually represented by envoys, indifferent to the emperors wishes and divided in religious and political aims. The Diet of Regensburg of 1663 prolonged itself indefinitely into permanent session and thereafter was called the Regensburg Diet, or the Everlasting Diet (Immerwhrender Reichstag). The emperor was now represented by a prince of the empire as his commissioner; a jurist was appointed as subcommissioner; and the elector of Mainz, archchancellor of the empire, had charge of the business of the meetings of the Diet. This assembly of representatives without legislative power disappeared when the Holy Roman Empire collapsed under Napoleons attack in 1806.

The name Reichstag was revived in 1871 for the legislature of the German Empire and retained by the Weimar Republic and the Third Reich; the name was abandoned in the two Germanies after World War II.

Exercise Background Information for Teachers and Parents

Exercise is the activity of exerting muscles in different ways to stay healthy and fit. Review with your children that a muscle is a body part that expands and contracts, or lengthens and shortens, to allow movement. Have children identify and point to different muscles on their bodies, including the heart.

Exercise helps strengthen and build muscles. During aerobic exercise, the heart and lungs work harder and over time they become stronger. We recommend watching the Lungs movie together as a review. This maintains a healthy blood pressure, improves circulation, and boosts the immune system so that the body can fight off illnesses more easily. In addition, exercise builds stronger bones by increasing bone density so they are less likely to break. Exercise can also help relieve stress by releasing endorphins, which are natural chemicals that relax the body.

Your children probably exercise everyday without even knowing it. They may play sports, run around during a game of tag, jump rope, or play hopscotch or handball during recess or lunch. Any physical activity that increases the heart rate and makes you sweaty can be considered exercise. Encourage your children to think about how they exercise during the day how they can add exercise to their daily routines. They can take their dogs for a long walk, climb a few flights of stairs instead of taking an elevator, or ride their bikes to a friends house instead of driving. Inspire children to get off the couch and away from the T.V. or computer and exercise. Children learn by example, so the best way to help a reluctant child is to exercise and play with them!

Before exercising, children should warm up their muscles by doing some light physical activities such as taking a brisk walk, doing a few jumping jacks, or running in place. After they exercise, children should cool down by walking and stretching until their heart rate goes back to normal. Children can take their pulse and pay attention to their breathing at different points in their routine to help understand aerobic exercise.

Remind your children that exercising safely is crucial. When they are playing a sport, they should wear all the appropriate safety gear, such as helmets, knee and elbow pads, wrist guards, and mouth guards. Protective helmets and pads should also be worn whenever children go bicycling, skating, skateboarding and the like. For children with asthma, remind them to keep their inhalers and spacers with them while exercising and pay attention to their breathing. They should also wear sunscreen if they plan on swimming or playing in the sun. Encourage your children to drink plenty of water (and not sugary sodas or juices) even when they are not thirsty. The body needs water to hydrate and function properly, especially during and after physical activities. Furthermore, they should limit their time in the sun by taking breaks in the shade or spending time outdoors when sunlight is less intense. Of course, your children should follow all the safety rules for playing a sport and always inform coaches, teachers, or instructors of any health issues with a written note.

Exercise is important for everyone. By encouraging regular exercise and explaining its benefits, your children can practice healthy habits at an early age and grow up to be strong, healthy adults. Encourage your children to create goals to maintain their physical fitness. Their goals should be realistic and incorporated into their daily routines.

Simon SaysPlay a game of Simon Says and have students point to different muscles in their bodies. For example, you might say Simon says to point to the hamstrings or Simon says flex your biceps. You might challenge them with an instruction like Simon says use your quadriceps and hamstrings and see what activities or exercises they come up with. Then have student volunteers act as Simon and call out instructions.

There are over 600 muscles in the human body! Some are voluntary muscles and others are involuntary muscles. Assign student pairs a region of the body, such as the face, head, chest, abdomen, hands, feet, or even the ears. Then have pairs research to find about different muscles in their region and present information to the whole class. What muscles help you wiggle your toes? What muscles help you hear?

Promote a healthy, active lifestyle. Come up with an exercise plan that you can do together with your child. Even exercising just a little everyday can promote health. Focus on different muscle groups in your plan. For example, you may choose a day to workout the leg muscles. You may want to do squats or leg lifts. Discuss the different muscles that you are focusing on and challenge your child to come up with exercises on his or her own that focus on the muscles.

Animals bodies differ vastly from that of humans. Research different animals together, such as kangaroos, crocodiles, and gorillas. Kangaroos have well developed back leg muscles to help them jump, while crocodiles have extremely strong tail and jaw muscles. Gorillas have well developed arm muscles. How do these muscles support the way these animals move?
