PETA Wants Vegans to Donate Their Poop to Improve Life-Saving Medical Treatment – Newsweek

Most vegans are happy to list the reasons why a plant-based diet is superior. Going strictly animal-free can reduce ones carbon footprint, cut risk for cancer and chronic diseases, prevent animal cruelty and provide an excuse to make a really great dessert.
But one thing thats probably not on your average vegans list is that this restrictive diet improves the quality of ones poopat least according to the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). This week, the animal rights organization issued a call for more healthy vegans to consider becoming stool super donors (i.e., providing specimens on a regular basis) in order to serve the growing demand since fecal microbiotoa transplant is now considered the gold-standard for treating recurrent clostridium difficile (c.difficile) infections and other potentially life-threatening gastrointestinal illnesses. In this experimental medical procedure, stool from a healthy person is transplanted to the gut of an ailing patient either in encapsulated pill form or through colonoscopy.
A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found 81 percent of patients with c.difficile who underwent transplantation made a full recovery from their illness. Research since has shown the cure rate after follow-up transplants may be evenhigher, as much as 90 percent.

The problem, however, is that good poop is actually pretty hard to find, and stool banks such as OpenBiome and Advancing Bio are quite possibly even more choosy than your average blood bank. PETA suggests that relying on fruits and vegetables as a main source of sustenance leads to a more diverse micriobiome, the complex ecosystem of bacteria freeloading inside your gut and nearly every part of your body. Manyor if one is lucky, mostare beneficial to health. Some of these microbes are even necessary for normal human function.
More and more research suggests that people with greater microbiome diversity tend to be healthier. Scientists have identified a link between certain gut bacteria profiles and just about every chronic medical condition, from ulcerative colitis and autism to common allergies, depression and certain cancers. More research needs to be conducted, which is another reasonwhy people withhealthy microbiomes are in high demand.
Vegan kitchens save 100 animals a year, and now, vegan bathrooms can be used to save some of our fellow human beings, PETA President Ingrid Newkirk said in a press statement. PETA is betting the farm that after meat-eaters experience the health and mood benefits of vegan stool, theyll go vegan themselves.
Fecal transplantation isnt yet approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. However, because it has been shown to be so effective for c.difficile, the FDA allows physicians to use it under their enforcement discretion guidelines for patients with c.difficile infections who do not respond to standard therapies. This essentially means the FDA wont go after a doctor who performs a fecal transplant once they have their patients consent. Last year, the FDA moved to tighten regulations by limiting the procedure only to large hospitals.
Zain Kassam, chief medical officer of OpenBiome, is a little skeptical of PETA's recommendation. Diet certainly has something to do with the quality of ones stool, but its not the primary deciding factor when he's deterimining if their poop warrants super donor status. Whether you're a 34-year old vegan lawyer who loves lentils or a 22-year old college student who craves a good hamburgerOpenBiome welcomes all healthy donors in the fight against C. difficile, he tells Newsweek.
OpenBiome, sometimes called the Red Cross of poop, recruits and screens stool donors, and then it filters and freezes the raw material for clinicians to use. A large list of factors go into deciding who is qualified to be a super donor, and Kassam says the research is ongoing to gain more insight on the medicinal magic of human waste. For the treatment of C. difficile, our studies and others suggest that all healthy donors are super donors, he says. For other diseases, such as ulcerative colitis, a type of inflammatory bowel disease, preliminary research suggests there may be certain donors that seem to work best. But, the jury is still out on what makes one donor work and another not.
In 2015, he conducted a study that proved just how hard it is to find suitable donors. Out of a pool of 459 people, only 27 actually passed clinical assessments and were permitted to submit stool samples for more extensive analysis. A study Kassam conducted the following year examined the diets of OpenBiome donors and compared it to the average diet of almost 5,000 Americans. The people at PETA will probably be disappointed to learn their findings: Beyond a small increase in fiber, the diet of OpenBiome stool donors is largely the same as the average American."

Adding encapsulated active dried yeast to the diets of grain-fed cattle may improve intestinal digestion of nutrients, say researchers.
An international team of researchers from Canada, China and the UK examined the use of encapsulated and non-encapsulated dried yeast in the diets of beef cattle. The team published its work in the journal of Animal Feed Science and Technology.
The objective of this study was to determine whether feeding ruminally protected active dried yeast (ADY) exhibits post-ruminal activity in comparison with feeding non-protected ADY assessed by measuring feed intake, ruminal pH and fermentation, and site and extent of feed digestion in finishing heifers, the researchers said.
The authors said they found feed intake and ruminal digestibility were not altered by the feed additives. However, post-ruminal digestion of organic matter (OM) and neutral detergent fiber (NFD) was improved when encapsulated yeast or both non-encapsulated and encapsulated yeasts were added to the diet.
The improved digestibility of OM in the intestine appeared to primarily result from the improvement of NDF digestion, they said.These results indicate the potential post-ruminal activity of ADY, and benefits to feeding protected yeast on improving intestinal digestibility of nutrients.
Adding an antimicrobial as a feed additive to promote growth in high-producing cattle has been a common practice in North America feedlot operations, said the researchers. Monensin is an ionophore often used for that reason.
However, feeding of antibiotics has been scrutinized owing to the concerns around increasing antimicrobial resistance, they said. Finding an inexpensive alternative to antibiotics that maintains end-product quality is of interest.
Probiotics are living microorganisms, often yeast or bacteria, that are considered safe to use in feed. Probiotic yeasts are increasingly fed to ruminants to boost animal health and production efficiency.
Previous research in that area regarding beef cattle production is limited compared to the amount done examining dairy cows, said the researchers. There is now overwhelming evidence that including probiotic yeasts in dairy cow diets can improve milk production and feed efficiency, they added.
Responses attributed to yeast are usually related to stimulation of cellulolytic and lactate-utilizing bacteria in the rumen that help stabilize ruminal pH, they said. However, the use of probiotic yeasts to improve beef production has been variable, possibly due to the diet composition, strain of yeast or yeast viability.
Most work with probiotic yeasts has examined rumen fermentation and areas including stabilizing rumen pH, encouraging growth of lactate-using bacteria, collecting oxygen from ingested feed, improving fiber digestion or promoting growth of ruminal protozoa, they said. Other benefits from adding yeast have also been noted.
Little is known about the influence the live yeast may offer post-rumen, they said. There also is a dearth of research looking at ways to protect live yeast through the rumen so it can reach the lower gut of ruminants, they added.
In the study, five cannulated heifers were given one of five diets for a period of 21 days before rotating to another of the trial diets, said the researchers. There was a one week adaptation period between each diet.
The diets included a control diet with no ADY or antibiotics; a diet (ANT) with 300 mg monensin and 110mg tylosin/d; a diet (ADY) with 1.5g active dry yeast/d; a feed (EDY) with added encapsulated active dried yeast at 3.5g/d (1.5g ADY and 2g capsule); and a mixed diet (MDY) with 1.5g ADY and 3.5g EDY/d.
ADY was encapsulated using a barley hordein and glutelin from barley grain, they said. Stability of the encapsulated yeast in the rumen was assessed during in vitro examinations.
Cattle received a total mixed ration including barley silage, corn dried distillers grain with solubles, dry rolled barley grain and a vitamin and mineral supplement, said the researchers.
Feed offered and refused were recoded daily, and samples of TMR were collected weekly, they said. Body weights were noted on the first and last day of each diet period, rumen contents were collected on days 19 and 20 and omasal samples were taken on the last four days of each feeding rotation.
Feed intake was established, flows to omasum, nutrient digestibility in the rumen and intestine were determined and microbial nitrogen was recorded, they said. Ruminal pH was checked for days 13-17 of each feeding period.
Dry matter intake was not altered by any of the diets, said the researchers. Ruminal pH, concentration of total volatile fatty acids (VFA), and NH3-N (ammonia) levels were similar for all the diets.
Similarly, no diet altered the flow of organic matter or starch in the omasum were found, they said. Flow of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) was highest with ANT but reduced when EDY was added to the diet.
Molar proportion of acetate and the ratio of acetate to propionate were larger when yeast was added to the diet rather than antibiotics, they said. OM digestion in the rumen tested to be lower when the EDY or MDY diet was fed, but no change in ruminal digestibility of starch or NDF was noted.
However, post-ruminal digestion of OM was found to improve for EDY and MDY diets compared to control and ANT, they said. Digestibility of both NDF and OM in the total digestive tract also improved with EDY or MDY diets.
These results demonstrate the post-ruminal activity of ADY and indicate the potential of feeding protected yeast to ruminants to increase intestinal digestibility of nutrients, the researchers said.
No alteration in the flow of nitrogen to the omasum or microbial protein synthesis was found, they said. But digestibility of N for the total digestive tract improved with dietary inclusion of EDY or MDY.
Supplementation of ADY or MDY tended to have greater gene copy numbers of R. flavefaciens compared with ANT, they said. Total protozoa counts were greater in the rumen of heifers supplemented with ADY or MDY compared with control or ANT.

Gene writes: Ive read that toxic chemicals get stored in our fat cells and that when you lose weight, these are released into your body. But all the sources I can find are companies selling detox products. Is there any truth to this claim or is this just another scam to separate us from our hard-earned money?
Before we Gene's excellent questions, lets talk about this word toxin. For most people, the word suggests things like synthetic pesticides or cleaning chemicals, which, ironically, are not technically toxins at all. Strictly speaking, a toxin is a poisonous substance produced by a plant, animal, or microorganism, such as venom from a snake or the bacterial toxin that causes botulism.
Whenever you see the word toxin or toxic, be sure to ask whether the amount you're likely to be exposed to has actually been demonstrated to cause harm--especially when someone is trying to sell you something.
In the popular lingo, however, the word toxin is often used to describe any compound that might have a negative effect on health. But the first rule of toxicology is that the dose makes the poison. Substances that may be harmful (or toxic) at high rates of exposure may be completely harmless--or even beneficial--at low doses. And virtually any substance, including water, can be harmfulor toxicif consumed in sufficient quantity.
Whenever you see the word toxin or toxic, be sure to ask whether the amount you're likely to be exposed to has actually been demonstrated to cause harmespecially when someone is trying to sell you something.

The study, published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity, took a look at survey data from 11,000 adults aged 29 to 64 and saw a strong correlation between home-cooking and healthy weight.
Individuals who had at least fivehome-cooked meals per week were 28 percent less likely to be categorized as overweight on the Body Mass Index (BMI) and 24 percent less likely to have excess body fat than individuals who opted for less than three home cooked meals per week.
Additionally, the home-eaters saw a higher daily intake of fruits, vegetables, and alcoholic beverages than those who tended to eat out more.
Cook your favorite foods at home and then sleep in the next day and youre on the right path to weight loss. Now that doesnt sound bad at all.

Change sometimes happens at an imperceptible level. Intention and patience are paramount they were for me when I so desperately wanted to rid myself of 100 pounds-plus. I was unhappy, had little physical energy, and even less enthusiasm for life.
And yet, the binge-eating served a purpose. It always does. As miserable as I was, removing my pleasure-foods and their mountainous quantity was out of the question. Potato chips, quite literally, got me through the 90s. Oh, but I was a determined one. When I was in my 20s and had loads more energy, I dropped 100 pounds twice. Turns out I was under the false impression that being thin would bestow automatic happiness. Not really. The inadequate fat girl was still dwelling within, and no amount of fixing the exterior would assuage her pain.
When the realization came that obsessing on getting the weight off was putting the cart before the horse, I was free to delve into other aspects of transformation, such as accepting myself right were I was a radical move during the 90s, long beforeMelissa McCarthycinematically showed the world that women of size were through being the butt of jokes and other sundry attempts Hollywood made at insisting large women are nothing but buffoons. Melissa gets it and so did I: Forward-movement was not possible without the crucial step of self-acceptance.
After trying repeatedly to invoke change throughdrill-sergeant-harshnessand self-recrimination, I was humbled to wave the white flag of surrender, and commence kindness. It felt peculiar at first, but got easier. The trick is, I didnt turn my back on the new practice. And there were other focuses: therapy, self-help books, 12-step meetings, Kundalini yoga classes, and easing up on the people-pleasing.
When enough inner-wounds had been salved, I was free to find healthier ways to deal with food. Not just deal with it, but develop a more balanced friendship with food. This took years and the evolution continues. I allowed change to happen at its own pace without excess force, some of my old drug-foods fell by the wayside. You know, the ones I thought Id NEVER give up because they meant too much to me. I dont play the never again game with some of my favorites. If I really want fried chicken, Ill indulgewithout a shred of regret. The difference is now, I dont pair it with buttered biscuits and a mound of mashed potatoes. And there are some binge-foods Ive simply lost interest in, like those once-crucial potato chips. The realization of it still kind of blows my mind.
I was reminded of just how far Ive come when I caught a glimpse of a former drug-food on television today. It was a typical food-porn commercial of a close-up of mayonnaise being slowly spread across a slice of commercial bread in near-erotic fashionand I cringed. I CRINGED! At something I once lusted after. I have no more interest in that now than I do inhaling a party-sized bag of Cheetos.
It was a change that happened without my orchestratingall while I was doing some mighty ferocious work on myself.

Healing your gut is so on trend. The recommendations for probiotics are everywhere and theres not a shelf in the store that doesnt boast benefits for gut health. Youve probably been tempted to drop four dollars on a kombucha at least once this week.
Gut health is critical for your overall wellness it can cure indigestion, stabilize your mood, and even banish acne. It seems it can do anything and everything under the sun.
But heres one thing it cant do: Weight loss.
Somewhere along the way, wading through article after article of nutritionist-approved advice to fix your leaky gut, consumers got confused. Maybe its because your gut is located in your stomach and weve been trained to trim belly fat. Maybe its because your gut processes the foods you eat and we believe that having a healthy gut might prevent foods from getting stored as fat around your waist. The motivation behind the misunderstanding is unclear.
You very well could lose weight on your gut health journey. But you also might not.
Its true that optimizing your gut health will help your body absorb more nutrients. Your digestion will reap more beneficial compounds from the same foods, resulting in better health overall. Its true that with better gut health, damaging inflammation will calm down a bit. This could reduce your risk for cardiovascular disease, dementia, digestive distress, type 2 diabetes, and more.
From taking probiotics, youll likely notice that you feel so much better, more energized, and just healthier. But you still might not lose weight.
Theres a concept out there that body fat is an indicator of poor health. This is where gut-healing gurus went wrong. While there is a correlation between a higher body fat percentage and poor health outcomes, there has never been a proven causation. Scientists have been consistently befuddled by healthy fat people, trying to find explanations for these exceptions to their rules denoting a persons ideal body weight.
You could get healthier and stay the same weight. You could get healthier and gain weight. In all probability, youll get healthier and the number on the scale will remain exactly the same.
So we recommend that you do invest in your gut health, whether thats by taking probiotics, eating kimchi, or just laying off the gut-heavy meals every now and then. But dont do it for the weight loss. Do it because it makes you healthier in a way youll be able to physically feel.

In the longer term, removing carbohydrates as a source of energy means your body uses fat and protein as its main source,aiding weight loss.
However, it's worth noting that the idea of cutting out carbs is very broad and not always completely helpful. Carbohydrate is a big food group, consisting of fibre (vegetables, whole wheat, pulses), starch (bread, pasta, rice, potatoes) and sugar (fruit, honey,biscuits, chocolate). For the aspiring slimmer, not all carbs are made equal.
Whilefibre and some starches are generally considered good forms that provide a slow and steady release of energy, sugar ismore contentious, as it provides a huge spike in energy very quickly, which the body is less likely to burn off (unless you're about to do exercise).
There are schools of thought that argue against low carb diets.
One of the primary gripes is that it is simply not practical for day to day living. The process of converting fat to energy (when carbohydrate is not available)is much slower, so dieters can be beset by feelings of fatigue.

These are a few things that Mark Klaus, CEO & president Home of Guiding Hands pointed out at its Aug. 27 annual meeting followed by an open house of its new facilities in El Cajon located at 1908 Friendship Drive in El Cajon. This facility is equipped to bring HGH staff together, offers rooms for arts and play for HGH families, rooms for family counseling and room to grow.
It was an intimate gathering for the annual meeting of HGH staff, Board of Directors, Board of Governors, the Heritage society, special guests and long term HGH supporters. Klaus said that it has been a challenging year, but HGH has a bright future ahead as it celebrates its 50th year of providing services its clients.
What started out by a small group of ambitious individuals has now grown into what HGH is today, said Klaus. I doubt that 50 years ago anyone could imagine the scope of services, the difference in peoples lives for people with developmental disabilities, their families, our staff and our community have accomplished. Board Chair Debbie McNeil said the Board of Governors is a team of diverse individuals working collaboratively to lend their expertise to HGH. We greatly appreciate their contribution and dedication to increase the visibility of HGH in the community within their personal and professional social circles, she said.
Rick Duramus returned to the board this year. When he became involved 25 years ago he said he saw that the founders were dedicated that HGH lasted forever.
A lot of things have changed in these 25 years, he said. We now have 31 group homes in the community and we have so much more to come. Weve not only maintained the vision of the founders, but I believe we have expanded on it. As Mark said, this year we have served more than 700 in respite care, 400 in early child development, 182 that live in our homes, more than 200 that we provide transportation for and there are opportunities for all those programs to continue to grow.
Duramus said one thing that makes those opportunities so strong is the fact that HGH has this new building. It now has the room to bring the children in to give them the help that they need and the ability to have employees here as a group, and room to grow.
In doing this, our goal was to raise $1.8 million. We did not do that, he said. Were going to. As Mark has said more than once, we are only one donor away. That being a million dollar donor. This could really happen. We continue as board members to do what we believe that will ensure the longevity of this organization. Eighty-nine cents of every dollar donated to us goes directly to the programs. The building campaign is still going on. There is a lot of opportunity here and we have the staff and guidance to make it happen.
Klaus said HGH still has people there that were here at the beginning of this vision 56 years ago in 1961. When you are operating a business that supports almost 2,600 people, 800 staff, dealing with legislatures, and unions, it is a business, he said. Before the open house, HGH recognized the many long-term staff that has remained with HGH, some from the very beginning. He said there are 15 staff members with more than 25 years, and in together 477 years of service to HGH and its cause. Also, it was time to give credit to some individuals that had made a huge contribution through the year with some special awards.

After the annual meeting, people poured into the new location for a look. At a special presentation, many expressed gratitude for the long-term HGH has had in the community.
El Cajon Councilmember Steve Goble said it was a big day for HGH.
Sometimes I think HGH stands for heroes guiding heroes, because that is the work that you do. I can think of several words that describe HGH and that is integrity, trust, compassion, skill, professionalism, empathy, knowledge. You are all so good at what you do and I and the City of El Cajon are thankful for what you do, he said.
Assemblyman Randy Voepel said as mayor for Santee for 16 years, the city worked closely with Home of Guiding Hands.
I remember seeing kids, clients, shopping and running around time and I always thought what a wonderful job this organization does for our community. The San Diego Delegation of the Assembly is 100 percent behind Home of Guiding Hands, so Im not here just representing myself, he said.
State Senator Joel Anderson said first of all he wanted to thank all the people that are involved in making HGH such a successful organization for the community that it serves.
Its family members, staff, volunteers, donors and a crackerjack staff that has kept Home of Guiding hands going and 50 years is a long time, he said. When you think about the businesses in our county, how many are 50 years old? And yet, Home of Guiding Hands is still providing services. You think about all the critical support, community housing, job skills, training, and family support, these are all so important for our community. As a representative I love to give credit to those who do great things in our community and HGH is at the top of that list. In the State Senate, I asked my colleagues if they would like to sign on with this resolution, and although they do not represent HGH, but they all recognize the great work that is done here.
