Produce ‘rescue’: Looking to Israeli initiatives to combat world hunger – The Jerusalem Post

LEKET ISRAEL volunteers pick produce for the needy..(photo credit:COURTESY LEKET ISRAEL)

The good news is that if you look at the world population who lives with chronic hunger [people who dont consume enough calories in their daily diets], that has dramatically decreased over the past 20 years. There are still about 800 million people in the world who go to bed hungry, Lisa Moon told The Jerusalem Post in an exclusive interview on Monday, adding that they mainly reside in Sub-Saharan Africa and Southern Asia.

For the past 18 months, Moon has been president and CEO of the Global Food-Banking Network (GFN), an international nonprofit organization working in 32 countries, dedicated to alleviating world hunger by creating, supporting and strengthening food banks around the world that currently serve 57 million people annually.

On her first trip to Israel, Moon is primarily visiting the Leket Israel facilities outside of Raanana, meeting with the staff and observing practices that Leket is using in Israel that can be applied throughout the world to combat hunger.

Leket, Israels national food bank, has rescued some 15,000 tons of produce for the needy which mainly comes from farms throughout Israel.

So far, the biggest takeaway for me is that Lekets approach is really unique, because they focus on fresh fruits and vegetables and working with local producers and focusing on nutrition with the people they are serving and people in food banks all over the world, Moon said.

Moon, an expert on global international policy and food waste, who has been involved with GFN since 2015, explained the shift in world hunger from chronic hunger to hidden hunger.

When people who may have enough to eat on a fairly regular basis but may have to miss meals, and they also dont have access to nutritious foods, and, regrettably, about one in four people globally has micronutrient deficiencies and is subject to hidden hunger thats really the hunger that food banks are working to address, she said.

Moon noted that we are living in a time when there is enough food for everyone, yet the statistics show that one in nine people in the world go to bed hungry.

It doesnt matter how much food we produce; if we dont have a way to distribute it to the people who are in need, we are still going to have a hunger issue, she said. So its an honor for me to work with food banks, because they really work with distribution.

Advocating the need for food banks throughout the world, Moon believes that this is the key element in reducing the number of hungry and malnourished people.

Right now, hunger is not about food production, she said, because, right now, we produce enough food for everyone to have enough. Its a distribution challenge and a logistics problem. And so what is so challenging about that is that a third of all the food that is produced goes to waste.

Explaining the need to provide impoverished communities with food banks, Moon said the challenge facing these organizations is getting this food directly to those in need efficiently and, of course, cheaply.

And so we need a mechanism to take that surplus food which is edible, she said. We need a way to capture that surplus food and redistribute it to those who cant access this at the store maybe the price is too high, maybe theyre too sick. Thats really the role of food banks. And thats why GFN is so passionate about promoting this model to communities around the world.

Moon credits Leket Israel for its unique method of collecting fresh, rescued food from the top of the food chain at the level of agricultural production.

Hoping to apply Lekets model on a global level, Moon said: We must focus on scaling food rescue around the world in order to meet growing demands and enter emerging markets.

These bizarre weight loss shorts will ‘eat your skin’ – New Zealand Herald

From juice fasts to cling film wraps, there is a range of weird and wonderful techniques used by people trying to shift a few pounds.

The latest effort is possibly one of the strangest yet - weight loss shorts lined with a material that 'eats your skin' to help you lose weight.

The bizarre shorts cost $65, and its designers claim that wearing them will help you to shift up to 2.5cm from your legs in just two months.

The Mass & Slim Leggings were revealed by Lanaform at the IFA conference in Berlin today, reports the Daily Mail.

The shorts are lined with hundreds of beads made from Tourmaline - a crystalline mineral compounded with elements such as aluminium, iron, magnesium, sodium, lithium, or potassium.

A spokesperson for Lanaform told MailOnline: "The Tourmaline dots effectively eat your skin, helping you to lose weight quickly."

The bizarre shorts only come in a signature grey and black colorway. Photo / Lanaform

The shorts work in two main phases, according to Lanaform.

Immediately, they help to slim the thighs, hips and stomach, providing comfortable support.

And in the long term, the Tourmaline beads correct unfavourable areas.

The beads - which MailOnline can confirm are very rough on the skin - create friction and heat the skin, helping to improve circulation and fight cellulite.

Lanaform also says that the beads have a "micro-massage effect" on the skin, increasing the flow of both blood and lymph to the area.

After just two months of wearing the shorts, Lanaform says that women should expect to lose up to 3.2 centimetres on their stomach, and 2.3 centimetres on their thighs.

While you might think that the idea of fat-eating shorts is slightly terrifying, a survey of women trialling the shorts revealed that 90 per cent were satisfied with the product.

The shorts, which only come in grey, are available worldwide, and cost $65.

The news comes after a major study earlier this week found that low-fat diets, adopted by many in their quest to lose weight, could increase the risk of an early death.

Global research of 135,000 people, by Canadian scientists, revealed that people who eat the least fat have the highest mortality rates.

The findings, presented at the world's largest heart conference, challenged decades of dietary advice which have focused on persuading people to cut fat.

Advice that has reached its expiration date – Daily Herald

A friend of mine is trying to lose weight and wanted to check whether her strategies were sound. She said she counts every calorie, avoids nuts because of the high fat content and snacks only on sugary (but fat-free!) foods. Was she on track?

If that conversation took place in 1993, she'd get kudos for her nutrition knowledge. But those bits of wisdom are badly outdated. Nutritional science changes quickly, and knowledge that was gleaned from a 25-year-old nutrition textbook needs to be refreshed. Here's how nutrition information has changed over the years and why it's important to keep up.

I remember the on-campus breakfast I ate most often in 1994: A huge New York-style bagel with nothing on it. We all believed that "fat makes you fat," so butter, cream cheese and peanut butter were off-limits. Fat-free foods were deemed better for health, so nuts, seeds and avocado were frowned upon. A low-fat, high-carb diet was the recommended approach for weight control and good cardiovascular health.

Check your menu. If you are still eating pasta without olive oil or bread without peanut butter, you're doing yourself a disservice. Fat should not be feared. Certain fats, especially from nuts, seeds, olive oil, fish and avocado, are beneficial for heart health and weight control, and can help reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. They should be enjoyed as part of the daily diet.

My nutrition textbook from 1995 says that "fructose does not cause problems of high blood sugar for people with diabetes." Fructose naturally occurs in fruit, and it's fine in small doses. But in the 1990s, fructose was heavily used as a sweetener for processed foods because we thought it was healthier than white sugar. Remember Frookies, the fructose-sweetened cookies for people with diabetes? Yikes.

It turns out that excessive consumption of fructose - mostly as high-fructose corn syrup - has been linked to insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes, so it's not good for diabetics after all. Too much fructose is also associated with metabolic syndrome, obesity and cardiovascular disease. Fructose from fruit is fine, but high consumption of fructose in the form of sweeteners is not recommended - whether you have diabetes or not.

I distinctly remember my nutrition professor saying, "It doesn't matter if you eat 300 calories from apples or from chocolate - a calorie is a calorie." In the mid-'90s, calories were all treated the same, no matter the source.

That was dietetic tunnel vision. We now recognize that calories from soda, candy and other treats deliver sugar but offer no vitamins, minerals, fiber or protein. That's different than calories from vegetables, legumes or fish, which provide nutrients in every bite. If you still count calories but don't consider much else, consider making an appointment with a dietitian to learn why nutrient-dense foods are a better option.

My dorm room was stocked with Snackwell's cookies, gummy bears and Snapple - all of my fat-free (and guilt-free!) pleasures. These fat-free foods are loaded with sugar. That didn't seem to be a problem, because I was taught that sugar causes dental cavities but is benign otherwise. I brushed twice daily, so no harm done, right?

Fast-forward to 2017, and a new story emerges. Recent studies link excess sugar consumption - especially from sweetened beverages - to an increased risk of obesity, Type 2 diabetes, dementia and heart disease. Sugar is not as blameless as we once thought and should be limited. The American Heart Association recommends no more than six teaspoons of added sugar per day for women and nine teaspoons for men. One 16-fluid-ounce Snapple has 10 teaspoons.

Weight loss was explained very simply in nutrition school: You'll lose weight by cutting calories from food and increasing calories burned through exercise. That's it - just eat less and move more. Obesity was blamed on laziness and overconsumption.

Now we know that obesity is more complex than that. It involves genetics, physiology, activity level, environment, diet and socioeconomic status. Plus, researchers are heavily studying how obesity relates to hormones such as leptin and ghrelin, which are not even mentioned in my 1990s textbooks. In 2017, we aim to treat obesity as a disease and not lay blame on the people who have it. And we still don't have all the answers to the weight control riddle.

In fact, we don't have a lot of answers about nutrition, which is considered a relatively new science. The research evolves as humans evolve, and today's theory may not carry weight tomorrow. It will be interesting to read this article in 25 years to see the progress we've made.

What is hyperemesis gravidarum? Pregnant Kate Middleton again suffering rare severe morning sickness condition – Mirror.co.uk

The Duchess of Cambridge is expecting her third child - and is once again suffering from the severe morning sickness which blighted her previous pregnancies.

Kate was in the early stages of her pregnancy with Prince George when she was admitted to hospital in December 2012 with hyperemesis gravidarum, a rare condition which causes severe vomiting during pregnancy.

Awareness of her tendency to the condition meant her second pregnancy was announced relatively early, rather than waiting for the 12 week milestone, as she cancelled public duties due to sickness.

For women suffering hyperemesis gravidarum, the severity of the vomiting can cause dehydration, weight loss and a build-up of toxins in the blood or urine called ketosis.

It affects 3.5 per 1,000 pregnant women and can cause women to vomit blood.

Symptoms also include severe nausea, low blood pressure and fast heart rate, headaches, lethargy or confusion.

It is treated by giving women fluids intravenously and by anti-sickness tablets.

The cause of HG is unknown. The leading theories state that it is an adverse reaction to the hormonal changes of pregnancy.

It is more common in multiple pregnancies and is commonly experienced during the first 8 to 12 weeks of pregnancy.

A scientific study has given preliminary evidence there may be a genetic component.

Symptoms can be aggravated by hunger, fatigue, prenatal vitamins (especially those containing iron), odours, and diet.

"In very simple terms hyperemesis means vomiting a lot and gravidarum means in pregnancy," said consultant obstetrician Daghni Rajasingam, spokeswoman for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 2014.

"The diagnosis is given when women cannot keep food or fluid down because she has severe vomiting.

"The women who are vomiting pretty much constantly, that cannot keep any nutrients down, they need to be admitted to hospital."

She said the length of stay in hospital depends on each patient but many women are discharged in a matter of days.

"It depends on how well the woman is keeping fluids down," Ms Rajasingam added.

She said the condition is thought to be caused by elevated levels of the "pregnancy hormone" hCG.

The body begins to produce human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) after conception.

While cases of very severe, protracted and prolonged periods of vomiting are rare, nausea and vomiting in pregnancy is very common, affecting 60% to 80% of women.

About 5% of mothers-to-be will be admitted to hospital during their pregnancy with some degree of the condition, Ms Rajasingam said.

Once admitted, doctors will monitor women and let them go home once they can keep fluids down.

Some alternative therapies are used to help reduce the symptoms and duration of the nausea and vomiting, including acupuncture, travel sickness bands, eating ginger and other herbal remedies.

The condition is most common in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, Ms Rajasingam added.

Caitlin Dean, trustee of the charity Pregnancy Sickness Support, also suffered from the condition.

"Imagine having a stomach bug that lasts for days and days, months and months - it is just relentless," she said.

"Any movement, any sound, any smell just makes you vomit.

"I vomited 20 to 30 times a day for the first few months, in the latter part it was just once or twice a day but it's still unpleasant.

"One of the big issues with it is isolation because is causes many women to be bed-bound.

"There is a real lack of understanding about the condition."

Why You Shouldn’t Lose Weight Too Fast… – HuffPost

Its a beautiful, sunny day here on Long Island, and despite it being a federal holiday (Labor Day) here in the States, Im still meeting with a couple of clients today. Unlike most people who absolutely hate their jobs and count the days until their next extended weekend, I genuinely enjoy my career, so I dont mind working on days like today. Outside of Thanksgiving and Christmas, Ill rarely turn down a client who requests to meet on days where most people are off:-)

Now then, lets discuss a fairly common goal that prospective new clients have with me. Well be on our strategy call reviewing their health questionnaire (to set yours up, go to http://www.weightlossbypete.com/strategy!), and well get to the section where theyve filled in their SMART goals. Normally, the goal is to lose a substantial amount of weight in a very short period of time.

Look, I get itYoure tired of feeling depressed, exhausted and fat all of the time, and you want to get as far away from those feelings as quickly as possible! If there werent any physical ramifications that came with that, then you can bet Id be another one of those fit pros selling you a bullshit Lose 30 lbs in 30 Days! program.

That being said, here are just a few of the many negative side effects losing a bunch of weight really quickly will provide you with:

3 Yo-yoing with your Weight, which puts unnecessary stress on your organs, and

4 No Knowledge of SUSTAINABLE eating and fitness practices to keep the weight off!

As Ramification #4 would suggest, when folks lose a considerable amount of weight in a very short period of time, they tend to do so in an unsustainable way, often via the application of an extremely low calorie diet coupled with insane amounts of exercise.

Now, I dont know about you, but I know that Im too busy to devote multiple hours a day to exercise, let alone the fact that my ability to function with hardly any food in my system is nonexistent! Food is fuel, so if youre looking to better your life while operating on empty, then my friend, youre truly going to struggle!!

The BEST rate to lose weight at, on average, is anywhere from 0.5 to two pounds per week. I can already hear the objections to this range, If I dont lose it really fast, then my motivation is going to wane! I cant work so hard all week and see just a couple of pounds (or less!) down on the scale

News Flash: The scale isnt everything! It just happens to be the easiest method of measuring progress on your weight loss journey.

Riddle me this: What are people going to notice first? Inches lost (and thus, your physical changes), body fat percentage reduction (also a physical change!), or the number of pounds lost? Most people wont notice youve lost any weight until youve lost a MINIMUM of 10 lbs, but if youre losing inches regularly and youre routinely reducing your body fat percentage, not only will your clothes fit better (or will you even have to potentially buy a newer, SMALLER wardrobe), but youll look and feel significantly better than before!

Some of my BEST success stories have come from people who didnt hit their short-term weight loss goals, but were more lean, toned, fit and energetic than theyd ever been at a weight 1020 lbs HIGHER than they anticipated they needed to get down to when we first started working together!! One busy mom finished off at 15 lbs HIGHER than she aimed for, but looked better than she ever had in her entire life!!!

One of the most common issues with weight loss, weight gain, and anything to do with weight is the cycle of yo-yoing. As a global society, weve gotten so good at losing weight, but so notoriously terrible at KEEPING IT OFF! If youre using a fad diet and/or workout program to get you results fast, I can assure you that youre not going to learn ANYTHING about what it takes to keep that weight off FOR GOOD!!

Unlike most people in the health and fitness space, I teach my clients high QUALITY nutrition, which will not only assist them in reaching their short-term weight loss goals, but will enable them to develop the healthy lifestyle habits necessary to keep the weight off PERMANENTLY! Outside of perhaps being a little more liberal with certain food and drink, NOTHING changes once youve reached your short-term goals!!

As someone whos lost 100 lbs and kept it off, I can tell you that good nutrition practices and consistent exercise habits are the KEY to never looking back at where you started from

So, if youre looking to make a healthy, sustainable and PERMANENT change, then you must learn to BE PATIENT and FORGIVING wit yourself! LEARN what needs to be done, instill those principles in your life, and youll be amazed at how EASY it is to keep the weight off 5, 10 and even 20 years down the road:-)

Weight loss: Do NOT quit carbs to lose weight – here’s why bread can HELP shed the pounds – Express.co.uk

MealKitt, who specialise in portion control, explained to Express.co.uk that those trying to lose weight are better off keeping carbs as part of their diet.

All dieters should do is make sure they are eating the right type. They explained: Most of us think that in order to lose weight and maintain a healthy diet we should be cutting out carbs, or at least minimising the amount we consume.

However this isnt always the case; carbohydrates come in many forms and some can be essential for our wellbeing.

Carbohydrates are the bodys main source of energy as they are broken down into glucose before being absorbed into the blood stream. Moreover carbohydrates that are high in fibre will bulk up your meals and help you feel full.

Getty Images

As well as eating the right type of carbohydrate, it is important to monitor portions, as it is all too easy to overfill a plate.

MealKitt advised: Evidence shows that around a 12 - 16 per cent increase in an average daily calorie intake among adults in the UK is due to larger portion sizes and tableware.

If youre not sure what a standard portion should be, then try using a kitchen tool such as MealKitt (www.mealkitt.com, 39.99) designed to help you with weight management and calorie control, ensuring you stay on the right track.

These are the carb swaps all dieters should be aware of according to the portion control experts:

Redefining our set body weight may be the way to lose weight for good – Bendigo Advertiser

Been on every diet you can think of? Taking your time may be the solution you're after.

After 30 years of dieting, Lynne Ryan successfully tried the Interval Weight Loss approach. Photo: Jessica Hromas

"I've been on every diet known to man," says Lynne Ryan, a nurse and diabetes specialist who has had a life-long struggle with her weight.

Ryan, 61, has tried low-carb, low-fat, the 'dry sherry diet', the boiled egg diet, Weight Watchers, "everything".

"While I managed to lose weight, I always put it back on and then a few more kilos," says Ryan.

Her experience is common among the 63 per cent of Australian adults who are overweight or obese;95 per cent can losethe weight, but they can't keep it off. In fact, they often end up heavier than when they started.

It is a problem Dr Nick Fuller, from the University of Sydney's Charles Perkins Centre, has sought to address in over a decade of work as an obesity researcher and specialist.

"The reason the scales keep going up is because we are tuned to a set body weight a weight that the body feels most comfortable being," Fuller explains.

When we take our bodies out of that comfort zone by restricting energy through dieting, our body works to counteract the weight loss, slowing down our metabolism, activating our hunger hormones and, when we return to normal eating, storing a little extra fat to "survive the next starvation (otherwise known as a diet)".

Some obesity experts prescribe medications to suppress the hormonal response, but Fuller believes there is another way.

In an approach he has called Interval Weight Loss, Fuller says we can avoid triggering the hormonal cascade by losing a small amount of weight typically 2 to 2.5 kilograms over the course of one month. The weight is then maintained for one month, giving the body and its 'set-point' time to adjust, before another weight-loss "interval" starts.

"To avoid disturbing the equilibrium too muchyou don't ideally want to lose much more than that, and then to negate all of the problems that often come with weight loss, you need to then maintain that weight for the next month to reset what is now your normal body weight before proceeding to lose weight again," Fuller explains. "If you continue to lose weight you will not succeed."

The gradual, comparatively gentle process means there is no need to count calories or restrict food groups. Along with a focus on quality sleep and activity levels, interval weight-loss involves eating five small meals a day of whole foods, including carbohydrates, dairy, eggs, nuts, oil and even chocolate as well as vegetables and fruit.

Ryan was skeptical when she first learned of the approach; one that unlike everything else she had tried did not involve restriction or a constant focus on weight loss.

"I had quite a few robust discussions about me not wanting to actually follow what he was suggesting," she recalls. "The challenge for me was believing that this would work because nothing had before. In the beginning I wanted results immediately. He convinced me that was why I hadn't been successful for the previous 30 years."

After fifteen months on the plan, Ryan lost the 20 kilograms she had been trying to lose. Eight years later, she has kept the weight off.

"I feel fantastic," she says. "I still make breakfast my largest meal of the day [as the plan recommends]. It forever changed my mindset about how you approach weight loss. Previously it was 'on Monday, I'm going to go on this massive diet and I can't eat this and I can't eat that and I can't go out for dinner and I can't do this'. That all changed and suddenly I wasn't on a diet and I was losing weight and most importantly, I was keeping it off."

Fuller believes its success is the fact that it is not a diet.

"It is a realistic lifestyle plan, individually tailored, and scientifically proven," he says. "It helps a person redefine their set body weight so they keep the weight off for good."

Dr Nick Fuller is an obesity expert from Sydney, Australia - he wants us to stop obsessing over different diets (yes!) and make these five simple food swapsto help us lose weight and keep it off.

He reminds us that a quick fix is never the answer, in fact it will often mean you end up heavier than where you started.

Speaking to News.com.au, Nick said:

Everyone has a set point which is the weight that a body defends," he said.

"So when you lose weight, your body does all it can to return to that set point.

"This is about changing the bodys set point, not a quick fix that will have you heavier than where you started."

Seems reasonable - so what are these five magical foods we should be ditching to help us with sustainable, long-term weight loss ?

1. Swap coconut oil for olive oil

It's not the first time we've heard that coconut oil is out.

While it make work wonders for your skin and hair when it comes to what we eat, the Mediterraneans know best.

2. Swap white bread for wholegrain bread

Again, this one isn't terrible shocking. White bread has little nutritional value whereas whole grains can reduce our risk of heart disease and types of cancers.

3. Swap cheese for skimmed milk

Say it ain't so!

There is a lot of conflicting information around this one, but Dr Nick told News.com.au, "Like its trendy friend coconut oil, cheeses consumption is sure to see your weight increase and will also block your arteries."

"The focus of dairy foods should be on regular consumption of skim or low fat milk and yoghurt."

4. Swap the alcohol for water

Again, we can see the logic here but it doesn't make us feel any better.

Dr Nick acknowledges there are some health benefits to drinking, but recommends sticking to two standard drinks per day.

The best choice though, is always water.

Sigh.

5. Swap dried fruit for fresh fruit

Did you know dried fruit contains five times the amount of calories as fresh fruit?

Forget the dried apple and blueberries and go get yourself the real deal instead.

5 extra easy swaps you can make today:

Switch butter for olive oil (when frying)Season with herbs instead of saltSwap red meat for fish (twice a week)Snack on nuts instead of chipsChoose whole-wheat pita instead of bread (for sandwiches)

Dr. Nishant Rao Stresses the Importance of Moderate Weight Loss in the Fight Against Hypertension – GlobeNewswire (press release)

Jackson, MS, Sept. 04, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) --

Jackson, MS - Nearly 85 million U.S. citizens have hypertension (high blood pressure). A normal blood pressure reading is 120 over 80, but high blood pressure (as a result of diet, lifestyle choices and stress) is higher than 140 over 90. Left untreated, hypertension can lead to cardiovascular problems. Dr. Nishant Rao, medical director at Diet Doc medical weight loss has lead his team to search for safe ways to effectively treat hypertension. Millions of Americans use Atenolol for hypertension, a medication that works well and has minimal side effects. He continued, The supply of this medication has suddenly decreased, leading many to try different medications with more side effects, or implement lifestyle changes to decrease the need and dependency for the medications.

The good news, is that numerous clinical trials have shown that as little as a 5-10 percent reduction in body weight can dramatically improve metabolic syndrome, type II diabetes and hypertension. Many people dont realize how little weight loss it takes to make a dramatic improvement in hypertension and then have the ability to use less drug intervention. Patients faced with the atenolol shortage can use this crossroads to lose fat efficiency, rapidly and directly improve outcomes for chronic disease. Diet Doc has created medically supervised programs which are free from all stimulants that cause hypertension, such as the commonly prescribed phentermine and other weight loss pills which are central nervous system stimulants. For an average patient weighing 180 lbs., this equates to a 9-18 lbs. weight loss to improve long term health outcomes, says Dr. Rao. This can be accomplished with rapid, medically supervised weight loss programs without the use of any stimulants. Diet Doc offers such programs via convenient, telemedicine-based doctor consultations and home shipments of safe weight loss medications that suppress appetite, control unhealthy eating habits and promote fast fat burning and regulate blood pressure levels.

With a team of doctors, nurses, nutritionists and motivational coaches, Diet Doc products help individuals lose weight fast and keep it off.
