Dieters who lose varying amounts of weight each week may not shed as many excess pounds as people who consistently lose the same amount week in and week out, a U.S. study suggests.
Researchers examined data on183 overweight and obese adults who participated in a weight loss program with meal replacements provided along with goals for calorie monitoring and exercise.
After two years, the dieters who had the most consistent weight loss during the first three months of the program shed more excess pounds than the people who initially had more fluctuation, researchers report in the journal Obesity.
While the study cant explain whether or how consistency in weekly weight loss might contribute to success, its possible that different approaches to dieting played a role, said study co-author Michael Lowe, a psychology researcher at Drexel University in Philadelphia.
Those who lose weight steadily may have had more consistent eating and exercise habits before they joined our program and continued with that pattern as they cut back on calories and exercised more, Lowe said by email.
Those with more variable patters may be trying to lose weight as quickly as possible - so they sometimes have big weight losses, but this leaves them starving and unable to stay on their diet for a week or so, Lowe added. They regain some of their weight, get upset, and try to lose as much as they can again.
At the start of the study, participants were 51 years old on average and typically obese. The majority were white, and most were women.
Overall, participants weekly weight loss tended to vary by about 1.09 pounds during the first six weeks and by 1.33 pounds during the first 12 weeks of the study.
Women tended to be more consistent dieters than men, with less variation from one week to the next at both six weeks and 12 weeks.
The researchers found that higher weight variability during the initial six and 12 weeks of weight loss treatment predicted poorer subsequent, long-term weight control at one year and at two years.
For example, someone who lost four pounds one week, regained two and then lost one the next tended to fare worse than someone who lost one pound consistently each week for three weeks.
Interestingly, individuals who reported lower emotional eating, binge eating and preoccupation with food at the start of the study showed higher weight variability and less weight loss overall.
This suggests that initial weight change, rather than relationships with or behaviors toward food, is much more important in predicting who will succeed in weight loss and maintenance, the authors conclude.
Its also possible that variation in weight loss from one week to the next slows down overall weight loss, making it harder for people to achieve long-term weight loss goals, said Susan Roberts of the USDA Nutrition Center at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts.
So people who are on their program some weeks but not others will inevitably lose less weight because you cant really catch up in the sense of making up bad weeks, Roberts, who wasnt involved in the study, said by email. At best, you can only get back on track.
Participants who had more consistent results might also do more thorough job of tracking what they eat and how much they exercise, said Dr. Anne McTiernan of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.
Perhaps the people with variability are having a harder time being careful about counting calories, watching what they eat, and staying active, McTiernan, who wasnt involved in the study, said by email. Slow and steady wins the race.

Fifty years ago this month, Bob and Iris Machiz and their partners, Jerry and Isabelle Appell, boarded a plane with their five kids and flew from New York, where they were born and bred, to Phoenix to open the states first Weight Watchers franchise.
A teaser ad in the local paper announcing the arrival of the company that was founded three years earlier, in 1963, by Queens housewife Jean Nidetch, attracted 16 people to the first informational meeting in September 1967, six to the second, one to the third and no one to the fourth.
Although the low turnout did drive the partners to find a bit of solace at a local ice cream parlor, they were encouraged by the fact that all 16 people in the first meeting signed up to become members.
Based on digital records since 1986, Weight Watchers of Arizona has helped more than 620,000 men and women lose more than 6.3 million pounds.
Today, Weight Watchers has 225 employees in Arizona conducting more than 250 weekly meetings at 55 locations, including 11 Weight Watchers centers, plus workplace meetings for employees at 56 companies.
When I came down to scout the territory, all I saw were long stringy cowboys with bolo ties, Bob Machiz said. But we made a go of it and its been an incredible run. FRIDAY, Sept. 1, 2017 (HealthDay News) -- Young gymnasts, figure skaters and wrestlers who try to quickly shed pounds by fasting or restricting fluids may be endangering their health, pediatricians warn.
Similarly, young football players or power-lifters who try to rapidly pack on muscle may also be undermining their health, a new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) said.
"Sometimes, children and teens in certain sports believe they need to achieve a particular body type to be successful," report author Dr. Rebecca Carl said in an AAP news release.
"Unless they have a healthy strategy to work toward their goals, however, they can end up defeating themselves and causing health problems," Carl added.
AAP experts point out that rapid weight loss by means of fasting or avoidance of fluids can actually lead to a loss of muscle strength, speed and stamina. Quick weight loss can also impair thinking, reaction time, alertness and the ability to problem-solve.
Young divers, runners, boxers and rowers are other athletes who may attempt to lose weight quickly.
The rapid loss of pounds may also lead to depression, mood swings, and even long-term eating disorders, the AAP team cautioned.
And health issues related to dehydration may not be quickly reversed, the experts warned. Rehydration typically requires up to 48 hours of regular fluid intake.
By the same token, fast weight gain increases the risk for obesity-related health problems, the doctors added, while also undermining overall stamina and athletic performance.
The upshot: weight gain and weight loss should be achieved gradually and over the long term by focusing on a carefully balanced diet paired with consistent exercise, the AAP team advised.
The report appears in the September issue of the journal Pediatrics.

After giving birth to her two children, Dani Wrafter suffered from post-natal depression and yo-yo dieted in a bid to lose her pregnancy weight.
Back in 2014, she gained 4st in just nine months due to her medication during a period where she took time off work.
At 14st and a dress size 18-20, Dani was so miserable about her size that she stopped going out with friends and would have panic attacks when she would have to leave the house.
She said: "In 2010, after my second baby I struggled to lose the weight and got back to a size 12-14 but not in a healthy way, I always had guilt about eating and mainly binged and starved myself.
"I tried every diet going, but never kept the weight off, I have yo-yo dieted to lose weight for years and this really affected my mental health and confidence.
In 2014, I had a severe episode of depression, I had to take time off work and ended up piling on weight due to my medication.

"Fitness has really helped me."

Dani continued: "The last two years working with my amazing PT Marcin Konkel and seeing progress has given me confidence and determination to be the best me I can be.
"My biggest thing is that I am no longer on medication for depression, I can be a better mum to my girls, they deserve it.

"I enjoy taking them out for active days, we go climbing mountains for fun and out running to the park.
"They can have a happy healthy mum, not a mum hiding away from the world."

Testosterone is produced by the gonads (by the Leydig cells in testes in men and by the ovaries in women), although small quantities are also produced by the adrenal glands in both sexes.It is an androgen, meaning that it stimulates the development of male characteristics.

The regulation of testosterone production is tightly controlled to maintain normal levels in blood, although levels are usually highest in the morning and fall after that.The hypothalamus and the pituitary gland are important in controlling the amount of testosterone produced by the testes.In response to gonadotrophin-releasing hormone from the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland produces luteinising hormone which travels in the bloodstream to the gonads and stimulates the production and release of testosterone.
As blood levels of testosterone increase, this feeds back to suppress the production of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone from the hypothalamus which, in turn, suppresses production of luteinising hormone by the pituitary gland. Levels of testosterone begin to fall as a result, so negative feedback decreases and the hypothalamus resumes secretion of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone.
The effect excess testosterone has on the body depends on both age and sex. It is unlikely that adult men will develop a disorder in which they produce too much testosterone and it is often difficult to spot that an adult male has too much testosterone.More obviously, young children with too much testosterone may enter a false growth spurt and show signs of early puberty and young girls may experience abnormal changes to their genitalia. In both males and females, too much testosterone can lead to precocious puberty and result in infertility.
In women, high blood levels of testosterone may also be an indicator of polycystic ovary syndrome.Women with this condition may notice increased acne, body and facial hair (called hirsutism), balding at the front of the hairline, increased muscle bulk and a deepening voice.
There are also several conditions that cause the body to produce too much testosterone.These include androgen resistance, congenital adrenal hyperplasia and ovarian cancer.
The use of anabolic steroids (manufactured androgenic hormones) can lead to a perceived high level of testosterone by the hypothalamus, resulting in reduced luteinising hormone secretion from the pituitary gland and, in turn, a decrease in the amount of testosterone produced within the testes, while artificial testosterone levels remain high. In men, prolonged exposure to anabolic steroids results in infertility, a decreased sex drive, shrinking of the testes and breast development. Liver damage may result from its prolonged attempts to detoxify the anabolic steroids.Behavioural changes (such as increased irritability) may also be observed.Undesirable reactions also occur in women who take anabolic steroids regularly, as a high concentration of testosterone, either natural or manufactured, can cause masculinisation (virilisation) of women.
If testosterone deficiency occurs during foetal development, then masculinisation of the foetus will fail to occur normally and this may give rise to disorders of sex development. If testosterone deficiency occurs during puberty, a boys growth may slow and no growth spurt will be seen.The child may also fail to develop full sexual characteristics (hypogonadism) associated with men undergoing puberty, including development of pubic hair, growth of the penis and testes and deepening of the voice. Around the time of puberty, boys with too little testosterone may also have less than normal strength and endurance, and their arms and legs may continue to grow out of proportion with the rest of their body.
In adult men, low testosterone may lead to a reduction in muscle bulk, loss of body hair and a wrinkled parchment-like appearance of the skin. Testosterone levels in men decline naturally as they age. In the media, this is sometimes referred to as the male menopause (andropause).
Low testosterone levels can cause mood disturbances, increased body fat, loss of muscle tone, inadequate erections and poor sexual performance, osteoporosis, difficulty with concentration, memory loss and sleep difficulties. Current research suggests that this effect occurs in only a small group of ageing men.However, there is a lot of research currently in progress to find out more about the effects of testosterone in older men and also whether the use of testosterone replacement therapy would have any benefits.

August 23 2017.An article appearing on July 18, 2017 in theJournal of Urologydocuments improvements in sexual function, urinary function and quality of life among men who receivedtestosterone replacement therapy.
The prospective registry study involved 656 men with low testosterone levels and symptoms of testosterone deficiency, among whom 360 were regularly treated with parenteral testosterone undecanoate for up to 10 years. The remainder of the subjects, who chose not to be treated with testosterone, received biannual routine clinic visits.
The researchers, from Boston University School of Medicine and School of Public Health in collaboration with German urologists, found that men who received testosterone therapy experienced significant decreases in their International Prostate Symptom Score, post-voiding bladder volume and Aging Males Symptoms scale, which assesses health-related quality of life. The percentage of patients without erectile dysfunction significantly improved in the testosterone treated group, from 17.1% at the beginning of the study, to 74.4% of the study at the last visit. In contrast, subjects who did not receive the hormone experienced deterioration in erectile function as well as in voiding functions. Prostate specific antigen (PSA), a marker which, when elevated, is associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer, remained unchanged in both groups over the course of the study.
While there were five deaths, 8 nonfatal strokes and 8 nonfatal heart attacks over the 8-month median follow-up period in the untreated group, none of these events occurred among those who received testosterone.
Long-term testosterone therapy, in men with testosterone deficiency, was well tolerated with excellent adherence suggesting a high level of patient satisfaction, authors Karim Sultan Haider and colleagues conclude. A progressive and sustained improvement in urinary and sexual function was recorded in men receiving long-term testosterone therapy, contributing to overall improvement in quality of life.

Nick Santonastasso doesnt have legs, and he only has one arm, but like any other athlete, his body is doing exactly what he asks of it.
The 20-year-old from Bayville, New Jersey was diagnosed at birth with Hanhart Syndrome, an incredibly rare disease in which babies are born with underdeveloped limbs or weak organs. There have only been 12 cases worldwide.
Today, Santonastasso is a fitness athlete, model and motivational speaker.
You have to adapt to the way you are, he wisely said at 17 years old. Before anyone will love you, youve got to love yourself.
He has the physical strength do almost anything, including flipping tires. But, its his inner strength thats most impressive.
Santonastasso played the drums in elementary school, but once he got to high school, he was encouraged by his wrestling coach to hit the mat. At the time, the bone in his right arm was growing faster than the skin, so he opted to have most of it amputated to relieve the pain in order to start wrestling his junior year.
I had standing ovations when I lost, and I just didnt understand because Im a very competitive person. Im like, Youre not supposed to cheer on someone that loses, Santonastasso told Great Big Story. After the matches, Id have parents come up to me and be like, Hey, my kid never did a sport, and he saw you today. Now he signed up for all these sports because he sees if youre doing it, theres no excuse for him not to. Thats why Im here.
And so many others are glad Santonastasso is here and delivering the message he is. He has more than 230,000 followers on Instagram, where he often posts fitness videos and pictures, demonstrating what he is capable of doing.

The free upgrade will be introduced to devices that already measure your VO2Max. This includes the TomTom Spark 3 Cardio and TomTom Adventurer watches. The accompanying smartphone app will then try to motivate you by awarding Fitness Points as you progress towards fitness age goals. To this end, the company will introduce more age appropriate fitness workouts.
Garmin has a similar concept. It also uses your VO2Max levels to assign a Fitness Age score. Fitbit does this as well but with a twist. The San Francisco manufacturer estimates your Cardio Fitness Levels, and lets you know what per cent you fall in, in terms of your age and gender.
These days its not enough to have your trusty fitness tracker dish out step and distance counts. Users want actionable information in order to make real-life positive changes. Fitness Age is a concept that is not too difficult to grasp and we will probably see more companies jumping on board.
TomTom says the software update will roll out to compatible watches during September.
