Hy-Vee to partner with Wahlburgers Restaurants, Orangetheory Fitness – Quad City Times

As the retail landscape changes, Hy-Vee plans to partner with Wahlburgers restaurants and Orangetheory Fitness, in a move the grocery chain says reinforces its "longstanding commitment to health and wellness, culinary expertise and customer service."

Hy-Vee Chairman, President and CEO Randy Edeker announced the strategic partnerships Wednesday.

The grocery store chain plans to build, own and operate 26 Wahlburger restaurants, nearly doubling that brand's locations. It also plans to put Orangetheory Fitness outlets in or adjacent to Hy-Vee stores.

These unprecedented collaborations reinforce our companys longstanding commitment to health and wellness, culinary expertise and customer experience, said Edeker, in a news release. However, they also represent a bold step to deliberately evolve our business to meet the change in our customers lifestyles and spending habits. These partnerships keep us on the leading edge as the retail grocery industry evolves.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, grocery spending trends began to shift in 2014, and last year, more meals were eaten outside the home than were consumed at home. Millennials spend 44 percent of their food dollars annually on eating out, according to the Food Institutes analysis of the USDA food expenditure data from 2014. Income spent in restaurants and on take-out meals has risen from 34 percent in 1974 to 50 percent in 2014.

There is a changing landscape in the retail industry, Edeker said. Hy-Vee has a responsibility to our customers, employees and communities to look for new ways to strengthen our company. With this type of progressive action, Hy-Vee is well positioned for future growth.

Wahlburgers is a family-friendly burger chain that operates 17 locations in nine states and Canada. Its owners include Executive Chef Paul Wahlberg and celebrity brothers Mark and Donnie Wahlberg. Mark Wahlberg already has a partnership with Hy-Vee, which sells its his Performance Inspired Nutrition line.

Hy-Vee plans to franchise the 26 Wahlburger units in seven Midwestern states, with its first franchise opening in West Des Moines in mid-2018.

Orangetheory Fitness, an intensive group training workout center, operates 750 studios nationwide, and plans to open an additional 1,500 in the next two years. The first Hy-Vee partnered center will open this year in the Twin Cities.

In addition to placing the studios in or near its stores, Hy-Vee dietitians will offer fitness center members dietetic services, along with samples of nutritional products and store tours that showcase products that meet Orangetheory Fitness customers' needs. The partnership bolsters Hy-Vees focus on health and wellness, company officials said, which currently includes in-store dietitians, HealthMarkets, chefs, fresh and organic produce and pharmacies.

Like our members, we know that many Hy-Vee customers are looking for more convenient ways to access fitness and healthy eating options in one location this partnership solves that need," said Orangetheory Fitness Chief Brand Officer Kevin Keith, in a news release.

Tom Cruise is heading back into the ‘Danger Zone’: ‘Top Gun 2’ is on track for 2019 – Men’s Fitness

It's finally time to return to the Danger Zone.

The sequel to the 1980s classic Top Gun, known as the film that rocketed Tom Cruise to superstardom (not to mention some highly suggestive volleyball), is currently on track for a 2019 release with the title Top Gun: Maverick, reports Screen Rant.

While there were rumors that production would have to be delayed due to Cruise's broken ankle suffered on the set of Mission: Impossible 6, so far there haven't been any changes. The movie is slated to film next year, as previously scheduled.

Maverickhas been in development in some shape or form for years, but this time it looks like the gears are finally turning. Jerry Bruckheimer is producing the film, and Paramount recently hired writer Eric Warren Singer to rewrite the script, with Joseph Kosinksi (Oblivion) directing, per IMDB.

Unfortunately, further details about the film are scarce. We can only hope it features more Kenny Loggins.

Hyatt’s Wellness Program Is Going to the Next Level With Fitness Brand Exhale Spa – Fortune

Hyatt Hotels & Resorts acquired Exhale Spa, a boutique fitness and spa brand, for an undisclosed amount. Exhale has grown from one studio in 2003 to 29 boutiques in 11 markets across the U.S. today.

This is Hyatts second acquisition in the wellness space. In January, it acquired Miraval Group, a wellness resort and spa company, for $215 million. Both deals are part of a larger strategy to invest in what Hyatt CEO refers to as adjacent spaces.

If youre not familiar with the wellness industry, the appetite for workout studios and fitness classes has exploded in the last few years. And a lot of the interest has come from private equity firms. Remember when Great Hill Partners acquired YogaWorks for about $45 million? Or when L Catterton bought stakes in fitness chain Pure Barre and rival FlyWheel/FlyBarre Sports?

I spoke with Exhale CEO Annbeth Eschbach back in January, and even she called the boutique fitness space saturated and confusing.

Fitness boutiques like Exhale have erupted in popularity. The boutique fitness industry industry was valued between $6 billion and $7 billion in 2015 and expected to more than double by 2020, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Let me illustrate this by naming a few fitness brands just in the super-niche world of barre (a ballet-inspired workout): Pure Barre, Bar Method, FlyBarre, Physique 57, Barre3, The Barre Code, Cardio Barre, Pop Physique, and Xtend Barre. And these are not just one-off random little studios. These have multiple locations in the U.S. or abroad. Theres 74% more barre inventory than there was a year ago in our market, Eschbach said.

And then came the tech disruptors, which vowed to sort the clutter. Classpass, which has raised approximately $154 million in venture funding from investors including GV and General Catalyst, created a universal gym membership model by partnering with studios across the country to offer a significantly lower price for consumers. Fort Fitness developed an on-demand video platform that live-streams workout classes from across the globe.

And Exhale was one of the first fitness companies to partner with both ClassPass and Fort even though they threatened to cannibalize Eschbachs business. Eschbach said earlier this year:

Im currently studying the hotel industry and the way it got disrupted. Today, we sit here, and we are watching these forces at work. You cannot deny them, you cant just sit around and wait for them to blow up. You need to embrace them, understand them, and figure out how to leverage them in a way that doesnt hurt and take over your brand. [Read the full story here.]

I followed up with Eschbach yesterday following the acquisition to get a better understanding of why she decided to sell the company and what this means for the future of Exhale. It will operate as a standalone entity within Hyatts wellness category, and Eschbach will continue in her role as CEO and president.

The Exhale experience is not bound by bricks and mortar and defined set space requirements, she said. Similarly, Hyatt's novel vision is to engage with travelers beyond traditional hotel stays and that means we are part of a revolutionary path forward.

Its not just Hyatt. Other hotel companies, including giants like Marriott, are investing heavily in lifestyle brands in order retain old customers and attract new ones (read: millennials) who have flocked to Airbnb. But will these acquisitions be enough?

Overweight driver standowns at Fonterra a bigger industry issue – experts – Stuff.co.nz

CATHERINE HARRIS

Last updated14:42, August 30 2017

MARION VAN DIJK/STUFF

Fonterra trucks have always been risky for heavier drivers, management has discovered.

Fonterra's decision to stand-down overweight truck drivers is a much wider issue in the trucking industry, and maybe other industries also, experts say.

Fonterra said on Tuesdaythat someof its drivers understoodto be two wouldbe offeredalternative duties because they were much heavier than the weight safety ratingson their driver's seats safely allowed.

The company also said that 50of its drivers weighed inbetween 140 kilograms and 150kg, the seat weightmaximums on its two main typesof tanker.

Road Transport Forum chief executive Ken Shirley said that Fonterra'ssituation was not new, and that there had been court cases in New Zealand and Australia previously over the matter.

"I've been in the job for 10 years and throughout those10 years, we've had health seminars on it... And I put to you too that it's not just our industry, it's across the board.

DANIEL WHITFIELD/STUFF

Fonterra general manager of national transport and logistics Barry McColl said the company would try to get drivers to lose weight so they could get back on the roads.

"There's all manner of jobs which an employee's performance can be severely compromised with severe obesity."

Fonterra was not only right, "it'stheirresponsibility", to do something about the problem, Shirley said.

The dairy giantsaid it had been looking for some months at how to make its trucks safer, and talking with manufacturers about alternatives such as seatbelt extensions.

But there was arisk the belt would not perform to safety standards. The beltswerenot attached to the vehicle frame, as they werein cars, Fonterra general manager of national transport logistics Barry McColl said.

He said there was no intention to make anyoneredundant, and the companywastalkingwith the affected drivers about health programmes and temporarily doing other duties.

If they were unable to or chose not to lose weight, the company would offer themother work, possibly"within the depot or, indeed, upskilling them to work in manufacturing roles".

Angus McConnell, deputy secretary ofthe New ZealandDairy Workers Union, said it was a"very delicate situation" for all involved. Many of the overweight drivers would have been reliable and valued workers and it was "quite a dilemma" for some people.

At the same time, Fonterra had to comply with the law and while the union would be checking Fonterra'sinterpretation, itwasn't just a matter of fitness for the job.

"This is a little bit more complex around compliance and safety."

However, "nobody's employment is at risk at this point. There is a lot more to be worked through."

Mainfreight boss Don Braidsaid it was the first time he'd heard of a driverbeing stood down because of weight.

His company used owner-operators, so weight was not so much of an employmentissuebut the companystill took driver health seriously.

"We see them as part of the family, and we run healthy cafeterias in all our operations and we have a nutritionist in Auckland who works with drivers and any of our other people who might be overweight."

Itwas acknowledged thatdriversfacedhigher health risks, as it was a sedentary job with variable hours, shift work, and sometimespeople madepoor food choices.

NZ Post said italways ensured its drivers werefit enough to operate their routes safely.

"To help them do this we provide a range of resources and information, so they are well supported to make healthy lifestyle choices whilst they are either at work or at home."

Employment lawyer Max Whitehead said he first heard about the policyfrom a colleague of an affected truck driver who weighed 150kgand had worked for the company for seven years.

He suggestedFonterra was being discriminatory and the policy was "grossly unfair and in breach of New Zealand law".

But another employment lawyer, Susan Hornsby-Geluk, said it was arguablethat the courts would see it as discriminatory.

Obesity was not one of theprohibited grounds ofdiscrimination inthe Human Rights Act. And while an argument had been made overseas for obesity to be seen as adisability, that argument had not been establishedin New Zealand yet.

"And even if it was defined as a disability, you still have to be able to perform the functions of the position."

Fitness for work was not an uncommon employment issue, she said.

"It's not unique to the truck driving industry. There are certainly cases I've been involved in in other industries where a certain level of fitness has been a genuine requirement of the position, including where people are required to climb or move around a significant amount."

Don’t talk about diets in front of your daughters, deputy head at top London school warns parents – Evening Standard

Parents should not talk about wanting to lose weight in front of their teenage daughters, a London deputy headteacher has warned.

Children are already exposed to toxic messages about the importance of being very thin and parents must help counter this, according to Fionnuala Kennedy of Wimbledon High School.

She wrote to parents at the 18,000-a-year girls school after watching Netflix drama To The Bone, which has been criticised for glamorising anorexia.

Ms Kennedy, deputy head (pastoral) at the school, said she was horrified by the film and concerned that teenagers would watch it during the holidays, with time to dwell on it and discuss it on social media.

In a message to parents about how to deal with the pressure faced by girls, she wrote: Role model as effectively as you can. Its difficult to advocate a rounded, healthy diet for your teen if youve cut out carbs and dairy yourself, or frequently refer to your desire to lose weight.

Ms Kennedy told the Evening Standard: We are all a bit culpable its quite a middle-class thing talking about cutting out food groups and clean eating.

Teachers should also be careful about what they say in front of pupils. She said: As a teacher when you come back from holiday and speak to your colleagues, one of the first things middle-aged women will say to each other is, You look fantastic have you lost weight? Its ingrained in us as women, so we have to be really careful because these messages are picked up all the time.

We are all role models. Mothers, teachers, aunts you will be looked up to even if you dont realise it, and it is your job not to propagate the idea that thin is just better.

Ms Kennedy said she watched To The Bone, in which Lily Collins plays a 20-year-old with anorexia, to keep in step with her pupils and suggested parents should also try to watch the same films as their daughters, to help understand their world. But she called the film irresponsible and said Netflix had a duty not to glamorise mental health issues.

She added: To The Bone, with its emphasis on anorexia as an act of rebellion, as sexy even, only adds to the thin is cool/right/attractive argument.

Beat, the national eating disorder charity, has warned that the film is likely to be highly distressing or triggering for people with eating disorders. It contains frequent references to calories, weight and eating disorder behaviours, as well as images of Collinss character Ellen at a very low weight.

The actress, 28, who has spoken about battling an eating disorder as a teenager, was required to lose weight for the film. She said she did so safely under supervision from a nutritionist, producers, the director and her own mother to avoid a relapse.

The films writer and director Marti Noxon said: Having struggled with anorexia and bulimia well into my twenties, I know first-hand the struggle, isolation and shame a person feels when they are in the grips of this illness.

"In an effort to tell this story as responsibly as we could, we spoke with other survivors and worked with Project Heal [a charity] throughout production in the hope of being truthful in a way that wasnt exploitive.

My goal was not to glamorise eating disorders, but to serve as a conversation starter about an issue that is too often clouded by secrecy and misconceptions.

"I hope that by casting a little light into the darkness we can achieve greater understanding and guide people to help if they need it."

A healthy alternative to fast food – The Daily Evergreen

Chefs work toward giving students more control of their food

Adam Koerner talks about the new plant-based grab-and-go options Friday.

Adam Koerner talks about the new plant-based grab-and-go options Friday.

KAYLA SIMONSON, Evergreen reporterAugust 30, 2017

WSU Dining Services now offers a new form of grab-and-go snacks called Bites, which are available at all the espresso bars and markets on campus.

Adam Koerner, assistant director of culinary operations, said the previous options for quick meals and snacks had a longer shelf life than Dining Services preferred. The products had lower quality than their previous provider Charlies Produce, and the culinary team decided they could do better themselves.

The idea was lets do it in-house. We can do it better quality the day of, Koerner said. And weve not only made the quality better, but the price has gone down.

After a year of planning and another six months of recipe work, Bites now has a greater range of healthier options, and the products are freshly prepared on campus daily, mostly by student employees.

Laurie Kennedy, executive chef of the central production kitchen, said the first phase was not focused on providing plant-based options. They have expanded the range of these healthier options in phase two, and they are now available.

We were going for more sustainable, local, fresh, healthy food, Kennedy said. We wanted to broaden our scope.

Alice Ma, Dining Services registered dietitian, said that a plant-based diet is better for the environment compared to a meat-based diet. It is their job to provide options for students if they wish to contribute to a healthy environment by choosing to eat more plant-based meals.

[Plant-based diets] are, in general, a lot higher in fruit and vegetables, in fiber, lower in cholesterol and saturated fats compared to a diet that is heavy on meat and dairy, Ma said.

She said that with added forms of protein such as chickpeas, falafel and tofu, all dietary needs will still be met without a need for meat or dairy.

Diets with higher cholesterol and saturated fats, according to the American Heart Association, lead to a higher risk of heart disease and stroke.

According to the Mayo Clinic, a high-fiber diet may help reduce the risk of obesity, heart disease and diabetes.

They have plans to set up sample tables to explain different benefits of certain items that often have a negative stigma, such as tofu, Koerner said.

He also said they love feedback, positive or negative. As they go into phase three, they want to hear what students would like to see in future grab-and-go options.

Kennedy said they care about providing delicious and healthy alternatives, and not all students have the time to sit down.

One of the biggest complaints that weve had in the past is that if people want to eat healthy, it costs more money, and were trying to change that, Koerner said. Higher quality, higher value, and its a healthier option at a lower price.

‘I reached rock bottom’: How this mom lost 93 pounds to transform her life – Today.com

email

In December 2015, Natalie Moxey was opening mail when she found a Christmas card that really surprised her. The local Indian restaurant, where she and her family ordered many meals, sent a holiday greeting. While the restaurant probably sent cards to all its customers, Moxey took it personally.

It is quite a scary thing to think you order enough food from a take-away company that they send a Christmas card, Moxey, 31, of Eversham, England, told TODAY. I reached rock bottom.

Mom of 2 loses 93 pounds in less than 2 years Play Video - 0:57

Mom of 2 loses 93 pounds in less than 2 years Play Video - 0:57

At the time, she weighed 261 pounds at 5 feet 11 inches tall. She had been overweight since she started having children. Like so many women, she gained the baby weight and failed to lose it. But it was her two sons that made her realize she had to make healthy changes.

If I am going to live to see my boys grow up the way I wanted to I am going to have to lose weight, she said.

Natalie Moxey took loads of "before" pictures and when she felt frustrated during her weight loss, she'd look at them for inspiration.

Around the same time, she also received an advertisement for Slimming World, a weight-management plan that focuses on healthy eating habits and portion control.

It felt a bit like fate, she said.

Like many women, Natalie Moxey gained weight when she was pregnant with her two sons, but never lost the weight.

In January 2016, she attended a meeting and wondered if the program could possibly work. In the past she tried diets and they always failed. But she decided to give it a shot. Instead of ordering take out she and her husband started making meals at home. In the first week, she dropped 7 pounds.

To have a plan where you can still enjoy this amazing food and still lose weight was a bit revolutionary, Moxey said. "I didn't really believe it."

At first, Moxey struggled to exercise but as she kept losing weight, she became more active.

I increased my walking, she said. Then in three or four months in 28, 30 pounds down I started to do exercise classes.

To her surprise, Moxey even started running.

I am not a runner, she said. I run regular 5Ks and 10Ks and I really enjoy it now.

Since January 2016, Moxey lost 93 pounds and weighs 168 pounds, which is her target weight. She recently celebrated reaching this milestone.

It was a pretty incredible feeling, she said.

After losing 93 pounds, Natalie Moxey feels like she is a better mom.

During the past 18 months, Moxey learned she was stronger than she thought.

I have taken control of what I do to myself and my body, she said. It helped me find my self-worth again.

Most importantly, it helped her become the mom she always wanted to be.

Being healthy and happy is what you need to be a good mum, she said. That is really important to me that (my sons) see that working to improve yourself is a positive thing.

Moxey provided a few tips to help others hoping to lose weight.

What it's really like to lose 100 pounds Play Video - 1:01

What it's really like to lose 100 pounds Play Video - 1:01

Even when Moxey disliked her appearance, she took pictures of herself. Looking at old pictures helped her stay focused on her weight-loss goals, even when it felt too overwhelming.

It is an amazing motivation to push yourself to keep going, she said.

Moxey thought that losing weight meant giving up pasta and potatoes. But she found a plan that taught her portion control, which helped her feel satiated, while still enjoying foods she loved.

I followed diets in the past and they are incredibly restricted and you feel miserable. It is just no way to live to basically be living with your stomach rumbling, she said. Dont let anyone tell you that you cant enjoy your food.

After her local Indian restaurant sent her a Christmas card for being such a good customer, Natalie Moxey knew it was time to lose weight. She lost 93 pounds in 18 months.

When Moxey first started Slimming World she set smaller goals, such as lose 5 or 10 pounds in a month. And when she reached those little goals, she rewarded herself.

If you do hit these mini goals, go and buy yourself new dress or go out to the cinema to celebrate, she said. "You have to be kind to yourself or you just wont get there."

Diets don’t work: Healthy eating and weight loss eating – Maidenhead Advertiser

Healthy eating may not lead to healthy weight loss

In an effort to shape up and lose weight many people begin to eat more healthily. Plans like the Joe Wicks body coach encourage us to include lean protein, lots of vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds salads and wholefood grains in our diet.

Although swapping the big mac for a big portion of vegetables is undoubtedly healthy, it may not be right if you are looking to lose weight. In fact if you are eating too many of the wrong healthy foods, you may actually start to gain weight.

Overall calorie deficit paramount for weight loss

Regardless of how you are eating, overall calories remain the most important factor for weight loss. Keeping in mind that the maximum sustainable weekly weight loss is 0.9kg a week (or 2lbs), the mathematics becomes clearer. As we are only looking to lose fat losing muscle mass really slows the metabolic rate, making weight loss harder that is the best place to start. Remembering that human body fat isnt just pure fat as it contains water and proteins, we typically calculate 900g of human fat to be the equivalent to between 3,400 and 3,700 calories. So if we divide this by seven for seven days a week, we come to the magic number of about 500. This then is the amount by which we need to undercut our energy requirement by daily to lose that 2lbs/900g every week.

Healthy eating not the same as weight loss eating

Although eating a healthy diet usually means that the foods you consume will contain fewer calories, if you have enough of these foods any food you will gain weight. If you are eating more energy - even healthy energy than you need, you will gain weight. Great examples of healthy but calorific foods are nuts, seeds and plant oils. Although very healthy, they contain large amounts of fat. Thus they are very high in overall calories. So yes they are good for you, but pack so much energy that they will hamper any weight loss efforts if eating in large amounts. Another good example is the avocado. Healthy - yes! But again their high fat content means that they are not the best choice for those looking to lose weight.

Arent there other factors?

Yes hormones play a large part. Even if you consume less energy than you need, hormonal imbalance will hinder weight loss. This could be caused by the presence of too much insulin sugar and starch consumption being the usual culprits. Sleep and stress also feature. A lack of sleep and too much stress will lead to cortisol (the stress hormone) being present in the blood which again makes you more efficient at storing fat as a survival mechanism. BUT overall calories are still the most important factor.

So what steps should I take?

In the short term calorie-counting apps will give you a really great lesson in the calorie content of different foods. Other well known plans like Weight Watchers and Slimming World will also make sure that your energy intake is right for weight loss. If those sound too off putting then eating healthy foods most of the time (80 per centsay) with occasional treats can work, but waking up hungry and ready for breakfast is a good sign that you are close to the 500 calorie deficit needed. Strength training will ensure that you only lose fat and not muscle, keeping the metabolic rate high. Moderating stress and getting proper sleep will be the icing on the cake that leads to success!

Trade and commerce in the UK can be traced back to hundreds of years ago. Today, it plays an important role in global trade and commerce as one of the biggest and most significant contributors.

It is undeniable that the UK is one of the most developed countries in the world as well. Because of this and its constant strive for progress, the global economy is continuously shaping up to become bigger and better through the years.

The LSE is the main stock exchange in the UK. It had been founded in 1801, making it one of the oldest stock exchanges in the world.

Today, the LSE is considered as the biggest stock exchange in Europe and the third biggest one in the world. As of the end of the third quarter, more than 2,290 companies are listed on the LSE, bringing its total market capitalization to more than 6 trillion.

Presently, the LSE Group (LSEG), which had been founded in October 2007 following the merger of the LSE and the Borsa Italiana, operates the LSE.

The FTSE 100 is the benchmark blue-chip index in the UK. It measures the top 100 companies listed on the LSE as a free-float, market-capitalization-weighted index. As of September, the FTSE 100 has a total market capitalization of 1.70 trillion.

The FTSE 100 had been founded on January 3, 1984 with a base value of 1,000 points. It is currently operated by the FTSE Group, a subsidiary of LSEG. ISHARES VI PLC (THE COMPANY) ISHRS GLBL HGH YLD CRP BND GBP HDGD DIST is a stock traded on the U.Ks stock exchange.

Most of the components of the FTSE 100 are international companies, which is why it is not a strong indicator of the UK economy. Nonetheless, it is a strong indicator of the LSE, representing more than 80% of the total market capitalization on the LSE. The FTSE 250, which measures the top 250 companies listed on the LSE, is a stronger indicator of the UK economy than the FTSE 100 because of its broad nature and most of its components being domestic companies. ISHARES VI PLC (THE COMPANY) ISHRS GLBL HGH YLD CRP BND GBP HDGD DIST has relatively good liquidity.

The FTSE 100 is rebalanced quarterly specifically every Wednesday immediately following the first Friday of March, June, September, and December. Components that have fallen short of the inclusion requirements are dropped to give way to those that have met all the said requirements.

The FTSE 100 had reached its all-time low of 427.50 points in February 1978; and its all-time high of 7,103.98 points in April 2015. Meanwhile, its best intraday high of 7,129 points had been reached on October 11.

Many investors are banking on the promising growth of the European economy. Amid the pressing concerns of today, it is still ideal for investors to penetrate European equity markets such as that of the UK.
