The Summit on the Parks fitness center, Cantons premier fitness and recreation destination since 1996, is getting a new look. The center will undergo renovation starting Aug. 31 and is scheduled to re-open at 6 a.m. Sept. 9.
This $140,000 renovation project will include installation of several new state-of-the-art strength and cardiovascular equipment (including Precor strength and fitness equipment, TRX suspension trainers, Gym Rax, two FTS Glides and a new multi-gym). Additional enhancements include installation of new carpeting and 11 big-screen TVs. This renovation project will also unveil a new floor layout with expanded stretching area.
This short-term inconvenience will definitely bring long-term gains for individuals in the area who utilize our facility as part of their regular fitness routine, facility supervisor Jason Lombardo said. Our Summit staff is committed to providing state-of-the-art equipment, as well as cutting-edge programs and services that will continue to enable our members to make health and wellness a top priority in their lives for years to come.
Recognizing these scheduling inconveniences, all current Summit memberships will be extended five additional days. To celebrate the grand re-opening, a special Summit Membership Appreciation Week has been scheduled for Sept. 9-15. Special activities include chair massages provided by Brackney Chiropractic; blood pressure and body mass index screenings provided by DMC; healthy snacks such as fresh fruit, smoothies, etc. to enjoy post-workout; as well as sandwiches provided by Jimmy Johns. All snack items are while supplies last. In addition, Summit members can also enter a week-long drawing for a chance to win prizes, plus take their picture at a selfie station, located in the Summit lobby.
From Sept. 9-30, anyone may sign up for an annual membership and save 10 percent. This special offer includes annual individual, couples, family and kids corner memberships (excluding matinee and payment plans) and is only available at the Summit front desk.
The Summit on the Park, 46000 Summit Parkway, remains a popular destination for Canton residents who utilize its many amenities, including aquatic center, fitness center, gymnasium, track, banquet and conference center and meeting rooms. The Summit currently offers daily, six-month and annual memberships.

HEALTH & FITNESS: Tips to choosing healthy breakfast – Aiken Standard

You have probably heard that eating a healthy breakfast is important. After all, breakfast is often said to be the most important meal of the day. Its difficult to prove that any one meal is more important than another, but research does show that eating breakfast can lead to important health benefits.
Breakfast provides energy to start the day. This is especially important if you will be active in the morning, either through an early trip to the gym or if you have a strenuous job, but even people who are less active may find that they feel more alert if they eat breakfast and not just because of coffee.
Eating breakfast can help reduce hunger and overeating later in the morning or at lunch. This is why breakfast is often emphasized in weight loss diets. In fact, 78% of participants in the National Weight Control Registry report that they eat breakfast every day as a way to lose weight and keep it off. These successful losers have lost an average of more than 60 pounds, so their advice is worth paying attention to.
What is a healthy breakfast? Unfortunately, there is no specific answer to that question. Most experts would agree that a good breakfast should include a combination of carbohydrates, protein and fat but be low in added sugar. These broad guidelines suggest that there are many ways to create a healthy breakfast, even if it doesn't include traditional breakfast foods.
A better approach may be to identify foods that would be poor choices for breakfast. Chances are, if your breakfast doesnt include items from this list, you are on the right track. However, if any of the following are true about your breakfast, it could likely use some improvements:
I think everyone would agree that foods that are frosted are better classified as dessert than breakfast. That said, from doughnuts to Pop Tarts to breakfast bars, many unhealthy breakfast foods are covered with a layer of frosting.
Just like frosting, breakfast foods that contain marshmallows are probably better choices for dessert. Marshmallows are found in cereals, granola bars and other packaged foods that are almost always high in added sugars beyond the marshmallows.
A fruit smoothie can be a healthy breakfast, but a fruit smoothie topped with whipped cream is probably closer to a milkshake as far as sugar and calories are concerned. The same goes for coffee drinks. A mocha-caramel-latte with whipped topping may contain coffee, but it also has far more sugar, fat and calories than you might expect.
Research shows that eating chocolate may have health benefits, but the research involves consuming small amounts of dark chocolate, not chocolate donuts or chocolate-flavored cereal. Again save the chocolate for dessert.
More specifically, you got the food while you were in your car, which means it likely came from the drive-through window at a fast food restaurant. Fast food is just as poor of a choice for breakfast as it is for lunch or dinner.
Of course, there are exceptions to these guidelines. There is nothing wrong with treating yourself to a chocolate frosted doughnut once in a while. But if your daily breakfast includes items from this list, you could benefit from a breakfast makeover, and this list should help you avoid many unhealthy choices.

Weight loss: This is the best trick YOU can do to lose weight without even trying – Express.co.uk

And the best trick you can do to lose weight without a diet plan involves the weighing scales.
Weight loss can be made much more likely if you weigh yourself everyday, a new study has found.
Previous experts have recommend weighing yourself less for weight loss success, but it now seems the reverse may be true.
Scientists at Drexel University and the University of Pennsylvania discovered when women weighed themselves daily over the course of two years, they lost weight.
The study looked at 294 women at university, who were of different weights and body shapes, and measured their body fat percentage.
The scientists found the women who weighed themselves everyday avoided weight gain and even experienced weight loss.
Dr Diane Rosenbaum, a psychologist at the University of Pennsylvania, said: The losses in BMI and body fat percentage were modest, but still significant, especially keeping in mind that these women were not part of a weight loss program.
We did not expect that, in the absence of a weight loss intervention, folks would be losing weight.
The study was published in the Journal of Behavioral Medicine.
Meghan Butryn, PhD, an associate professor in the College of Arts and Sciences at Drexel said: Regularly weighing yourself can motivate you to engage in healthy eating and exercise behaviors, because it provides you with evidence that these behaviors are effective in helping you lose weight or prevent weight gain.
Similarly, if you see weight gain on the scale, that information can motivate you to make a change.
An expert in body transformation has revealed some exercises you can do in the comfort of your own home to help reduce stomach fat.
Chris Wharton, a specialist in body transformation, said: He said: By carving out just 10 to 20 minutes a day to create a morning routine, you can make a profound improvement to your physique.
Now only will you look great, you will have a lot more energy, enjoy much better sleep quality and feel far happier in general.
Carol Kirkwood, a weather girl for the BBC, has revealed her plan for keeping slim.

After school program to return to SK this fall – Ricentral.com

SOUTH KINGSTOWNGirls on the Run, an after-school program which combines physical exercise with social-awareness and confidence-building activities, will be offered this fall through South Kingstown Parks and Recreation, following a successful first go in the town last year.
Throughout the 10-week course, girls learn life skills including how to manage their emotions and how to resolve conflicts, all while training to run in a 5K race.
Its empowerment-building for girls, just to feel confident in themselves and be able to communicate with other kids they go to school with, said Lenka Capek, recreation supervisor at South Kingstown Parks and Recreation. Its just a great program were able to offer the community, incorporating running with social issues.
Established in North Carolina in 1996 as a way to inspire girls to be healthy and confident, Girls on the Run has since become international. The program, which, according to its website, envisions a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams, arrived in South Kingstown last year.
Girls on the Run is split into two programs, based on ageone session, dubbed Heart and Sole, is geared toward middle school girls in grades six through eight, while another session invites 3rd through 5th graders. Each class follows a lesson plan, including individually-set running goals.
Each lesson is based on the previous lesson, Capek explained, so it builds and builds and builds.
For example, one of last years lessons dealt with social encounters in the middle school. Girls were given cards depicting various social situations, and while jogging laps were required to come up with responses.
On one card, girls were asked to respond to being the only one of their friends not to be invited to a birthday party.
And there were all these questions that were follow-up based on how youd react to it, Capek added. How would you handle it? How would you feel?
[They learn] not just to have a meltdown during a situation, she continued, now theyll now how to handle itwell talk through certain steps to take before they overreact.
The curriculum for the elementary school girls and that for the middle schoolers is each age-specific. While the curriculum for the older girls deals with situations and changes that girls in middle school often go through, lessons for the younger girls focus more simply on emotions and feelings, with group bonding exercises sprinkled in.
And although there is inevitably some shyness initially, Capek said the difference at the end is palpable.
We see them 20 timestwice a week for 10 weeksand you go from that first day, when no ones talking, she said, to the last day, when you cant get them to stop talking.
Once they got over [their shyness] they became more open with us and talking, in general, she continued. We had some difficult issues and we had some simple issues and we worked through them together.
Capek recalled a participant in last years Girls on the Run who upon completing the 5K run at the end of the 10 weeks broke into tears.
She was so happy, she added. She didnt think she would ever be able to do this.
For many of the girls who enter into the program, the furthest distance theyd ever run had been the mile-run during physical education class at school.
A lot of them didnt think they could run a 5K, Capek added. And now, here they are running it and finishing it.
And many girls had parents join them during the 5K run as their running buddies.
It comes full circle, Capek said. The parents arent there for really any part of it up until the end, when they get to see their kid in the 5K.
The race, which this year takes place at Warwick City Park on Nov. 19, includes Girls on the Run participants from around Rhode Islandstatewide, there are 23 Girls on the Run (3rd through 5th grade) groups and just two Heart and Sole groups, including SK. In fact, last years first-place finisher came from the South Kingstown Heart and Sole group.
She wrote us a card that said, I couldnt have done this without you, Capek said.
You see night and day from the first day to the last, she continued, and its really, really rewarding on our part, as well.
The last day to register is Sept. 7. The program meets beginning Sept. 12 at the South Kingstown Recreation Center Tuesdays and Thursdays, with the 6th through 8th grade program meeting from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. and the 3rd through 5th grade program meeting from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Registration is at http://www.gotrri.org.

Theres a lot to be said for being in the right place at the right time, but could Air Supplys long-time success be the result or a chance meeting or was the cosmos working overtime on a little something called destiny? Maybe, but one thing is for surenone of it would have been possible at all without their hard work and tenacity to make it happen. The two Russells, Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock, happened to be cast in the same Sydney, Australian production of Jesus Christ Superstar in 1975, and everything changed after that.
Many an audience member has probably asked himself if a fine looking group of ladies about to take the stage could possibly do justice to one of the most popular rock bands in the world. Its a legitimate question considering its not easy music to play, so a person cant help but wonder if the music will be taken as seriously as the people in the audience do. However, once the guitars are plugged in and the girls dig into those first few chords, the obvious answer to that question is, oh, hell, yes.
Many a cook tries their hand at duplicating foods they love in restaurants and specialty shops, telling themselves, it cant be that difficult. Often times, theyre right. It can be doneand its pretty simple. However, sometimes, its not as easy as it looks.Mexican food for example looks easy because ingredients are simple, sauces are often slow-cooked and meat is marinated, making this comfort food one of Americas favorite. Recipes are often handed down and each time theyre prepared, a spice might be tweaked or flavor added, depending on taste and preference.
Its been 40 years since Elvis Presley died (August 16, 1977) and millions of people still have the date circled in red on their calendars. People still remember and they still mourn. Some internet sites have gone to the extent of estimating what he would look like now, if he were still here in the physical. This time of year Memphis fills up with more people than usual as crowds in large numbers make their pilgrimages to Graceland for visits to his home while tribute shows pop up all around the country to remember the huge icon that he was.

Healthy eating the best way to lose weight – Tahlequah Daily Press

It is no news flash that weight loss is a major focus in the minds of many Americans. From weight-loss programs to exercise videos and low-fat or low-calorie foods, losing and gaining weight has become somewhat of a national pastime. Looking good and feeling good is important. After all, good health includes not only a healthy body, but also a healthy attitude.
The first component of weight management deals with healthy eating. No food plan is magical and no specific food must be included or avoided. The best dietary recommendation is to follow the guidelines set forth by the USDA MyPlate Daily Checklist. The USDA MyPlate Daily Checklist encourages eating a variety of foods from the USDA MyPlate Daily Checklist food groups.
A simple reduction in calorie intake may be recommended for weight loss. However, severely restricting calories can be counter-productive. Calorie intake needs to provide adequate nutrition without being excessive. There are about 3,500 calories in 1 pound of body fat. Therefore, to lose 1 pound, your calorie intake needs to be 3,500 less than your calorie expenditure. This would result in about a 1- to 2-pound loss per week. Adequate nutrition is difficult to achieve on fewer than 1,200 calories a day, and most healthy adults should not consume less than this amount.
Although underweight is a less common problem than overweight, for some people, the struggle to gain weight is as difficult as weight loss is for others.
Some healthy weight gain strategies are to eat regular meals, eat larger portions, eat extra snacks and beverages and increase physical activity to build muscle. A person will gain weight by increasing calories alone, but it will be mostly body fat.
The second component of weight management is to increase physical activity. Regular physical activity is a great way to increase the amount of calories expended, and aerobic activity is one of the best. With aerobic activity you can burn calories and at the same time receive the cardiovascular benefits.
The Dietary Guidelines physical activity recommendations for adults are 150 minutes of moderate-intensity per week or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity per week. For additional health benefits, you should increase your activity each week.
Some people may need to consult with a health care provider before participating in physical activity. Activities to maximize calorie expenditure should be those that are lower intensity, but performed for a longer period of time. This is one reason walking is promoted so much for individuals interested in losing weight.
Muscles burn more calories than fat. So the more muscle someone has, the more calories they will burn throughout the day. Physical activity helps reduce the amount of fat and at the same time tones and strengthen muscles. Physical activity is also beneficial for people who want to gain weight. Strength training in particular helps build muscle mass so that weight gain comes from both muscle and body fat.
Physical activity helps you feel and look healthy and so can improve self-esteem. Feeling good about yourself can help motivate you to stay with your weight management plan. Change should be slow and gradual, look for changes that will last, and weight management is an ongoing process.
Rapid weight loss is more likely to lead to a rapid regain of the weight. Remember, when your "willpower" wears down, you may feel frustrated and defeated. There is nothing wrong with using specific events or rewards as an incentive to make weight changes. Weight management should be viewed as a process. The person who has not been doing any regular activity should not decide to go out one day and run 10 miles, but should gradually work toward a specific goal.

Dr. Roach: Testosterone replacement can affect sex drive, osteoporosis – LubbockOnline.com

Dear Dr. Roach: I am a 67-year-old male in fair to good health (more good than fair, really). In a recent column, you mentioned that a good testosterone level for a man taking a replacement would be between 500-600 ng/dl.
In November, I was tested for my testosterone level. At the time, I was (and still am) suffering from a low sex drive and erectile dysfunction. My level was 290 ng/dl. The reference range my primary care doctor bases his judgment on has an acceptable range from 193-950 ng/dl; hence he said my level was low normal.
When looking at the symptoms of low testosterone, I noted that I have at least four symptoms: low sex drive, ED (for which I have already been treated with a prosthetic implant), loss of body hair (especially my legs) and, most notably, osteoporosis (for which I take alendronate sodium, 70 mg weekly). I was diagnosed in November.
I also am being treated for depression and anxiety disorder, and have been since 2001. I dont know if this is related to my testosterone level.
Should I talk to my doctor about the disparity Ive found in reference ranges? Should I be seeking treatment for the low testosterone? J.P.P.
Answer: I think you definitely should speak to your primary care physician. You also might benefit from a discussion with a urologist or endocrinologist with experience in treating men with testosterone replacement.
When we look at normal testosterone levels by age, we find that older men have lower normal levels; however, given your symptoms and result, I certainly would think a trial of testosterone would be appropriate. I must say that I am surprised that you had an implant placed without a trial of testosterone first. I also am surprised you were treated for osteoporosis without a trial of testosterone replacement, which has been shown to improve bone density in men with low testosterone levels (one study treated men with a testosterone level below 350; another if they were below 320). Low libido and erectile dysfunction both frequently respond to testosterone replacement: Some men get benefit in their mood as well. You sound to me like an excellent candidate for testosterone replacement.
Dr. Roach writes: A recent column from a man asking for alternatives to coronary bypass surgery generated many letters with the same question: Why not advise a change in diet as an alternative to surgery?
There are two reasons. The first is that its not an alternative to surgery: Its a medical recommendation that should be made for every person with diagnosed coronary disease. Nearly all people can improve their diet. While a vegan diet was the most common recommendation I received, it still is not clear that a vegan diet is most likely to reduce coronary disease. In the vast literature on diet, there are only a few well-done studies that show a benefit. The clearest benefit has been from the Mediterranean diet, but a very-low-fat, plant-based diet, in combination with stress reduction and smoking cessation, has been shown to help reverse coronary lesions.
The second reason is that if someone needs the arteries in his or her heart reopened, the changes in diet are not likely to reverse blockages in the time needed to prevent a heart attack.
Healthy diet changes are appropriate for all people with heart blockages, but inadequate by themselves in the short term, in people with symptoms of angina and serious blockages.
