Since moving back to Guam, I make it a point to train outdoors and capitalize the great year round weather the island has to offer. I see many people daily take advantage of early morning runs and weekend 5Ks, but I rarely see people training on the beach.
I understand its difficult to deviate from a routine, however implementing new training modalities can help increase performance and in this case decrease the rate of short and long term injuries. Lets explore some of the benefits of training on Guam's sandy beaches.
One important component I consider when designing training programs is exercise efficiency. One of the key benefits with sand training is you almost double the amount of calories you burn in exercise compared to a stable surface (grass, pavement).
Since the sands surface is uneven, youre constantly fighting for stability making the exercise or movement much more difficult.
Plus, engaging more stabilizer muscles will also help with better control and overall balance.
As we get older, its important to consider movements that require the least amount of strain to our body.
Some of my top training suggestions are sand and water. Both are great at applying resistance yet can absorb the shock and impact your feet, knees, hips and back take over time. Training in sand is also great for rehabilitation or if there are any mobility concerns for those with limitations.

Theres research that indicate that sand training not only helps people burn more calories but also helps impact the recovery process.
Although your body will be working harder in the sand that doesnt mean it will take a longer time to recover compared to doing other resistance bearing exercises.
This is important to consider especially when training athletes because you want to apply the most amount of workload to the body without compromising training for the next day.
Now with this new found appreciation for beach training, Im hoping to see more people take advantage of Guams beaches as a training tool in addition to taking epic sunset selfies!

Now we men can blame our hormones: testosterone is trouble – The Guardian

As a man the sort of thoughtful, Fawcett Society-supporting man who lowers the toilet seat after peeing, even when he has the house to himself its hard to talk about women and their hormones. Theres no doubt that they affect minds and bodies, through puberty, pregnancy and premenstrual syndrome (PMS). The National Association for Premenstrual Syndromes list of common symptoms includes mood swings, depression, tiredness, anxiety, feeling out of control, irritability, aggression, headaches, sleep disorder, food cravings, breast tenderness, bloating, weight gain and clumsiness.
Men cant and shouldnt ignore this catalogue of woes. But theres a fine line between commiserating and condescending. Its too easy and tempting to dismiss a womans actions or opinions because its that time of the month. Mostly it isnt. Many women are lucky enough to escape PMS. And even when they dont, sometimes shes still right and youre still wrong.
For better or worse, however, we males must now face up to our own fluctuating chemistry. We may not routinely bloat and bleed, but a new study makes it clear that we too are at the mercy of our hormones specifically, the one produced between our legs. After testing hundreds of men, researchers from the California Institute of Technology, Wharton School, Western University and ZRT Laboratory reported (pdf) a clear and robust causal effect of testosterone on human cognition and decision-making.
To put it bluntly, testosterone makes you stupid.
Having persuaded 243 men to smear their torsos with either a placebo or a testosterone gel (imagine the lead-up: No, honestly, were not videoing this No, thats not a one-way mirror No, we are not going to offer you a Diet Coke), the scientists gave them a cognitive reflection test designed to assess their ability to answer tricky questions where their first, intuitive answer was likely to be wrong*. Those who had rubbed themselves with testosterone rather than the placebo answered 20% fewer questions correctly while remaining convinced they were right. They also gave incorrect answers more quickly, and correct answers more slowly than the placebo group. As Caltechs Colin Camerer said: The testosterone is either inhibiting the process of mentally checking your work or increasing the intuitive feeling that, Im definitely right.
Perhaps its not Donald Trumps brain thats running things, but the Leydig cells in his testicles
If testosterone does encourage hasty decisions, thats not always a bad thing. If youre being chased by a tiger, for example, its better to either run away or improvise a weapon than to just stand there weighing up your options. All the same, this will be a kick in the teeth for big pharma. In the US particularly, drug companies have encouraged doctors to prescribe billions of dollars worth of testosterone supplements to combat the effects of ageing, despite objections that they do nothing for mens health. A host of studies have already shown a correlation between elevated testosterone levels and aggression and now theyre being linked to dumb overconfidence. That wont help with the marketing though it may explain Donald Trump and his half-cocked willy-waggling. Perhaps its not the presidents brain thats running things, but the Leydig cells in his testicles.
Women arent entirely off the hook their bodies also produce testosterone, though in smaller quantities, and the Caltech study notes that it remains to be tested whether the effect is generalisable to females but for now at least they now have another way to fight the scourge of mansplaining: Youre talking out of your nuts.
Better still, with the evils of testosterone firmly established, the world may learn to appreciate older men. Around the age of 30, no longer young, dumb and full of cum, we typically find our testosterone levels declining, so that with every day that passes we become less aggressive, more rational and generally nicer. Your average 54-year-old to pick an age entirely at random can now boast that as well as decades of experience, he can draw on ever-larger reserves of self-control. Whether were trying to land a beautiful lover or a well-paid job, that should make us quite a catch.
* For example, A bat and a ball cost $1.10 in total. The bat costs $1 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost? If you immediately declared 10 rather than 5, youre a) wrong and b) possibly covered in testosterone gel.

Testosterone replacement can affect sex drive, osteoporosis | To … – STLtoday.com

Dear Dr. Roach I am a 67-year-old male in fair to good health (more good than fair, really). In a recent column, you mentioned that a good testosterone level for a man taking a replacement would be between 500-600 ng/dl.
In November 2016, I was tested for my testosterone level. At the time, I was (and still am) suffering from a low sex drive and erectile dysfunction. My level was 290 ng/dl. The reference range my primary care doctor bases his judgment on has an acceptable range from 193-950 ng/dl; hence he said my level was low normal.
When looking at the symptoms of low testosterone, I noted that I have at least four symptoms: low sex drive, ED (for which I have already been treated with a prosthetic implant), loss of body hair (especially my legs) and, most notably, osteoporosis (for which I take alendronate sodium, 70 mg weekly). I was diagnosed in November.
I also am being treated for depression and anxiety disorder, and have been since 2001. I dont know if this is related to my testosterone level.
Should I talk to my doctor about the disparity Ive found in reference ranges? Should I be seeking treatment for the low testosterone? J.P.P.
Answer I think you definitely should speak to your primary care physician. You also might benefit from a discussion with a urologist or endocrinologist with experience in treating men with testosterone replacement.
When we look at normal testosterone levels by age, we find that older men have lower normal levels; however, given your symptoms and result, I certainly would think a trial of testosterone would be appropriate. I must say that I am surprised that you had an implant placed without a trial of testosterone first. I also am surprised you were treated for osteoporosis without a trial of testosterone replacement, which has been shown to improve bone density in men with low testosterone levels (one study treated men with a testosterone level below 350; another if they were below 320). Low libido and erectile dysfunction both frequently respond to testosterone replacement: Some men get benefit in their mood as well. You sound to me like an excellent candidate for testosterone replacement.
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Planet Fitness Offering New Lights-Off Hour So No One Can Watch You Work Out – The Onion (satire)

NEWINGTON, NHIn an effort to reduce the amount of self-consciousness some members experience, gym chain Planet Fitness on Friday announced a new lights-off hour so no one can watch you work out. During the hour of 5-6 p.m., all Planet Fitness centers will be dimmed almost to the point of total darkness so that everyone can exercise while avoiding the judgmental stares of people around them, said spokesperson Gabe Eaton, explaining that all of their over 1,300 locations would, at the scheduled hour, promptly shut off all the lights and lower blackout shades over the windows, creating a near-impenetrable blackness in which members can confidently lift the lightest dumbbells using completely inappropriate form. No one will be able to see well enough to look down on you, which means you no longer have to feel ashamed to work up an embarrassing amount of sweat while walking on a treadmill at a low speed and no incline. Likewise, nobody else will know that you wandered away from a weight machine because you couldnt figure out how it worked and were slightly worried youd break it. Eaton went on to say that music would remain at normal levels, which means other members will still be able to hear you wheezing after two minutes on an elliptical.

Trump foes, questioning his mental fitness, want to oust him from office using the 25th amendment. How would that work? – Los Angeles Times

Is President Trump crazy?
Not can-you-believe-he-really-said-that? crazy. Certifiably-mentally-unfit-to-serve-as-president crazy.
Its an outlandish assertion insulting, really and a measure of the antipathy of Trumps critics that some, including members of Congress, have seriously raised the subject. Which brings us to the 25th Amendment.
Born of the Cold War and enacted after the assassination of President Kennedy, the language amounts to a bit of technical housekeeping appended to the Constitution. It outlines the presidential line of succession, including procedures in the event, as the amendment states, the chief executive is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.
With impeachment of Trump an exceeding long shot given the GOPs firm grip on Congress a small chorus of Democrats has suggested an even less likely antidote to a presidency they cannot and will not abide: removing Trump on the grounds he is mentally unsound.
Democratic Rep. Zoe Lofgren of San Jose has introduced a resolution urging Trump to seek a medical and psychiatric evaluation to determine his fitness for office. Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu of Torrance has talked up legislation requiring a psychiatrist be stationed at the White House.
The presidents spokeswoman has brushed aside questions about Trumps mental health as beneath contempt.
Ridiculous and outrageous and unworthy of a response, said Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, responding to a suggestion by Sen. Bob Corker, a Republican of Tennessee, that Trump "has not yet been able to demonstrate the stability, nor some of the competence, that he needs to demonstrate in order to be successful."
Still, the 25th Amendment is having a moment. Searches spiked on Google during the presidents fiery brimstone appearance at a rally Tuesday night in Phoenix.
What does the 25th Amendment say?
If a president dies, resigns or is removed from office, the vice president steps up and takes over. The new president then nominates a vice president, subject to congressional approval. The amendment also allows a president to transfer power to the vice president if he is temporarily incapacitated, during surgery, for instance, then reclaim those powers afterward.
What does that have to do with Trump and his mental health?
Patience, please. Thats addressed in the fourth and final section. In the event the president cannot fulfill his constitutional duties and cannot or will not step aside, the amendment outlines a procedure for his ouster.
Go on.
Under the law, the vice president and a majority of the presidents Cabinet may declare the president incapacitated by notifying the leaders of the House and Senate. At that point, the vice president assumes the duties of the president.
President Pence, here we come!
Look, the chances of any of this taking place, short of some medical crisis, are somewhere between exceedingly improbable and utterly impossible.
But didnt President Trump say just the other night, Most people think Im crazy to have done this. And I think theyre right!
Please.
OK. But what if?
If the vice president and Cabinet declared the president incapacitated, he could reclaim his powers by writing to legislative leaders and declaring his ability to do the job. If the vice president and Cabinet members object, the matter then gets kicked over to Congress, which has 21 days to act. It would require a two-thirds vote in both chambers to strip the president of his powers, once and for all.
You mentioned the Cold War and JFK.
A bit of history: The Constitution makes it pretty clear the vice president is next in line to the president. But there was some question about how exactly that worked, and quite a kerfuffle in the 1840s when President William Henry Harrison died and Vice President John Tyler took over.
But were not going there.
Fast-forward to the Eisenhower administration. After a 1955 heart attack and other serious maladies, the president worried about the transfer of power if he were temporarily incapacitated, especially given hair-trigger relations with the Soviet Union. President Eisenhower worked out an informal arrangement with his vice president, Richard Nixon, in case he needed to temporarily cede power. Still, Eisenhower thought it better to have some mechanism explicitly spelled out in the Constitution.
After Kennedys assassination in November 1963, Democratic Sen. Birch Bayh of Indiana took up the matter in his capacity as chairman of the Senate subcommittee on constitutional amendments. Congress passed the 25th Amendment in July 1965 and it was ratified on Feb. 10, 1967.
Has the 25th Amendment ever come into play?
The amendment guided the process when President Nixon chose Rep. Gerald R. Ford of Michigan to replace Vice President Spiro Agnew after his resignation in October 1973. Ford, in turn, became president when Nixon quit in August 1974. Ford then chose former New York Gov. Nelson Rockefeller as his vice president.
In 1987, aides to President Reagan weighed the possibility of invoking the amendment when concerns grew about his listless and detached behavior in his second term. The prospect was soon dismissed, however, when Chief of Staff Howard Baker deemed Reagan fit to serve.
Separately, on three different occasions Reagan and President George W. Bush voluntarily transferred power to their vice presidents when they had surgery under general anesthesia.
So the mental capacity clause has never been tested?
No. But its great for stirring up Trumps opposition.

Can You Be Too Fit to Be Fertile? One Fitness Instructor’s Story of Discovery and Healing – POPSUGAR

Ashley Pitt is a Bay-Area based group fitness instructor, personal trainer, and the writer of A Lady Goes West healthy lifestyle blog and her first ebook, "Fit and Fertile."
I'd always been told I was superfit and healthy. And that's because I was lean, I exercised a ton, taught group fitness classes, and loved to eat clean. However, a couple of years ago, I found out that even though I appeared to be very healthy on the outside, something wasn't quite right on the inside. It was my hormones. And ultimately, my fertility.
I was, in fact, too fit to be fertile, and as I started to uncover what was going on with my body, I discovered that my condition, called hypothalamic amenorrhea, is a problem that's a lot more common among woman in the fitness industry than we'd like to think. But nobody is talking about it, and it's not very easy to find answers. Here's my story.
Just about two years ago, my hubby and I decided we were ready to start a family. At that time, I was working as a group fitness instructor and personal trainer living in San Francisco and doing multiple workouts a day and walking miles upon miles to get from gym to gym. I was also eating really clean, focusing on salads, smoothies, sushi, and small portioned-out meal-prepped tupperwares the epitome of prepared.
I had good muscle tone, I felt fine and from the outside, was the model of good health. However, when I decided to stop taking my hormonal birth control pills, which I had been on for years and which had kept my cycle regular, I was shocked and confused to find that my period never reappeared on its own.
Over the course of a year, I went to multiple doctors and specialists and finally got the diagnosis of hypothalamic amenorrhea a condition in which the brain tells the body to stop having a period because the environment is too dangerous to reproduce. This can be caused by too much exercise, too much stress, or too little food. Mine was most definitely based on the overexercising element, with low body fat from being really lean, too. Basically, my insides had shut down, because I was expending so much energy on tough workouts day in and day out.
I took to the internet to find help, and I came up short. My own doctor didn't know what to do and told me I had no chance of getting pregnant naturally. And every blogger's tale or website I read said to eat a bunch of junk to gain weight and quit exercising altogether, which would mean I would have to leave the fitness industry entirely. But I knew that wasn't the path for me, so I paved my own way, and I was able to get my period back and ultimately get pregnant by making a few lifestyle changes. Here's what I did.
Reduced my high-intensity workouts by half.
I knew I wasn't going to stop working out entirely, especially because fitness was my job and passion, so I slowly reduced my high-intensity workouts by half. I did all the barre, yoga, walking, and light weightlifting that I wanted (no more than one workout a day), but I never did HIIT or tougher one-hour classes (like Orangetheory Fitness, where I was a coach at the time, or Les Mills BODYPUMP) more than twice a week. I also took one to two full rest days each week.
Increased my body fat and my dietary fat intake.
I had been eating very healthy, however, I discovered that much of the time, my meals were missing dietary fat. I added at least one full avocado a day to my diet, whole eggs (all the yolks), veggies coated in coconut oil, lots of nut butter, salmon, and even weekly dinners of grass-fed organic steak. I also upped my overall intake of food each day by eating a few more healthy snacks and supporting an overall weight gain. In the process, I gained a few percentage points of body fat, but I did it with healthy food.
Became a believer in Eastern Medicine.
At first, I was totally skeptical of acupuncture, but I finally made an appointment a few months into my struggles, and I've never looked back. My acupuncturist was able to address my body's physical and even mental stress by using special points to heal my liver system and reproductive hormones. She also created special herbal supplements for me and advised me on other supplements to take to improve my fertility.
Over the course of a year of keeping up with these lifestyle changes, my natural period came back to me. And even though sometimes I got down about missing tough workouts and growing out of my size 0 workout capris, I knew that it was worth the effort. In fact, during the next year after beating hypothalamic amenorrhea, I was able to naturally conceive, having taken so much care to prepare and heal my body the right way.
All the while, I continued to teach a few group fitness classes a week and write about fitness on my healthy lifestyle blog, "A Lady Goes West," ultimately keeping my place in the industry.
My story is unique, because I didn't have to give up fitness to get better. I just had to make enough lifestyle changes to put my body on the road to recovery and in the process, I learned an entirely new, hormonally healthy way to live, which I'll maintain moving forward, especially after welcoming my first baby boy later this year.
To all the superfit ladies out there, no matter what you do, make sure you monitor your cycle to know that it's coming regularly of its own accord and not just induced by hormonal birth control. And be careful not to overdo it on your workouts, because you just may be messing with your insides. Because, yes, you can be too fit to be fertile.

Donald Trump slams critics questioning fitness – Boston Herald

President Trump fired back yesterday against Washington critics and cable news pundits playing armchair psychiatrist as they claim he is unfit to continue serving in the Oval Office.
Trump took to Twitter to slam former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, who doubted the presidents stability after his wild campaign-style rally Tuesday night in Arizona.
James Clapper, who famously got caught lying to Congress, is now an authority on Donald Trump, tweeted Trump. Will he show you his beautiful letter to me?
Its unclear what letter Trump was referring to assuming one even exists and if it is indeed beautiful.
But the presidents tweets indicate he is still ready to take shots at critics by resurrecting their old controversies for the benefit of his tens of millions of followers.
When asked during a 2013 congressional hearing whether the National Security Agency collects any type of data at all on millions of Americans, Clapper told Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon: No, sir. ... Not wittingly.
But three months later, both The Washington Post and The Guardian posted articles, from information given to them by Edward Snowden, revealing the NSA had collected metadata from phone companies about U.S. citizens.
Ironically, Trump wouldnt have the ammo to cyber-lob at Clapper in the first place had it not been for leaks to the media, which Trump has condemned, and for Snowden himself, who Trump at the time called a terrible traitor and ... you know what we used to do to traitors.
Clapper, who most recently served under President Obama, said on CNN Tuesday night that he found it pretty damn scary that Trump could, in a fit of pique, decide to do something about Kim Jong Un, North Koreas rogue dictator.
I really question his ability to be his fitness to be in this office, and I also am beginning to wonder about his motivation for it, Clapper said.
Trump also blasted his frequent target, the mainstream news media, for their coverage of his Arizona rally. CNN anchor Don Lemon in particular appeared to jettison the principles of impartial journalism by unleashing a tirade of insults at Trump on the air calling him unhinged, petty, small, like a child blaming a sibling and critiquing his speech as without thought, without reason, devoid of facts and no sanity.
The network then wallpapered the screen with boxes of pundits who assessed Trump as mentally unstable, psychotically demented, and bat-crap crazy.
The Fake News is now complaining about my different types of back to back speeches, Trump tweeted yesterday. Well, there was Afghanistan (somber), the big Rally (enthusiastic, dynamic and fun) and the American Legion V.A. (respectful and strong). Too bad the Dems have no one who can change tones!
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders also jabbed back at Republican Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker, who claimed Trump hasnt been able to demonstrate the ability nor some of the competence ... to be successful and that he doesnt understand the character of the nation.
I think thats a ridiculous and outrageous claim and it doesnt even require a response from this podium, Sanders said.
Trump also sought to downplay a report in The New York Times that he and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell are no longer on speaking terms. But in doing so, he took another jab at his partys Senate leader, saying his only problem with him is that he failed after seven years of promising to repeal Obamacare.
