Doing this one simple thing everyday could help you lose weight – The indy100

You might have been advised to totally avoid scales if youre trying to lose weight.

And while thats sound advice for anyone focusing too much on pounds lost, or easily unmotivated by what they see-there might be good reason to not only keep the scales, but to weigh yourself every day.

People who weigh themselves daily can actually lose more weight than those who dont, according to a new study.

Researchers at Drexel University and the University of Pennsylvania recruited almost 300 women, of various weights, and asked them about how often they weighed themselves.None of the women were on any weight-loss programmes at the time.

The researchers measured their BMI (Body Mass Index), which measures a persons height-to-weight ratio, and assessed their body fat. They did this at the start of the study, six months into it, and again after two years had passed.

They found that the women who weighed themselves every day had lower BMIs at the end of the two years, compared with those who didnt.

The researchers concluded that weighing yourself every day could make people more aware of their fitness and diet goals.

The study purposefully recruited students, because more than 70 per cent of students gain weight during their first year at college, according to research.

Meghan Butryn, an author of the research, said:

Regularly weighing yourself can motivate you to engage in healthy eating and exercise behaviours, because it provides you with evidence that these behaviours are effective in helping you lose weight or prevent weight gain.

Similarly, if you see weight gain on the scale, that information can motivate you to make a change.

However, the link between weighing yourself every day and weight loss couldn't be confirmed. The researchers wrote:

It is possible that the relation between self-weighing and weight might be driven by scale avoidance among those who experienced weight gain.

83% of people lose weight on THIS diet without exercising – Daily Star

GETTY

Not sure whether to try juicing or low carb? Well youre probably better steering clear from both if you want a trimmer figure.

New research has revealed the most effective diet for achieving and maintaining weight loss and it doesnt even involve milkshakes or skipping meals.

The extensive study by Ticketgum.com quizzed 1,245 slimmers about which diet plan they follow and whether or not it helped them reach their weight loss goal.

It turns out a whopping 83% of people admitting to hitting their slimming target by following the Paleo diet and 89% achieved their goal weight by combining the caveman eating plan with exercise.

20 fat-burning foods that help you lose weight

Avacodo - includes monosaturated fatty acids that are more likely to be used as slow burning energy than stored as body fat

Furthermore 67% of people said they maintained their goal weight by sticking to Paleo principles.

The second most effective diet was Slimming World, which helped 78% of people drop pounds, followed by Weight Watchers which worked for 73% of dieters.

On the less successful end of the scale, just 17% of people managed to lose fat with Slim Fast and only 11% got lean by juicing.

We spoke to Paleo diet specialists Keris Marsden and Matt Whitmore, who answered all your burning questions about the prehistoric eating plan.

PH

Speaking exclusively to Daily Star Online, the pair who co-authored The Paleo Primer: A Second Helping explained the principles of eating Paleo.

What is the Paleo diet?

Essentially the Paleo diet or the Paleo-ish diet as we like to call it is a diet based upon predominantly unprocessed foods including meat, poultry, fish, fruit, herbs, vegetables, nuts and seeds.

The principle benefit to favouring these foods is the fact that they're some of the most nutritious foods available to us in terms of vitamins, minerals and antioxidant content, plus these foods have always been the foundation of the human diet.

Good news dieters! The 23 foods that contain NO calories because you burn more than you consume as you eat

1 / 23

APRICOTS - Calorie content: 12 kcals per apricotEating apricots is said to help reduce the risk of strokes, and heart attacks. They're also full of vitamin C, potassium and dietary fibre, which all promote good heart health

How can the Paleo diet help you lose weight?

One of the biggest factors is the reduction in processed foods, most of which are loaded with poor quality fats, refined carbohydrates, excess salt and food additives all which make them highly palatable, difficult to portion control and can lead to an energy excess in the body.

Replacing these with natural, nutritious ingredients, especially more vegetables, means your calorie consumption is effortlessly reduced whilst still eating a similar volume of food.

Furthermore the foods emphasised on the paleo diet are loaded with micronutrients that fuel your metabolism including zinc, magnesium, iodine and B vitamins, plus the increase in protein and fibre provide more satiating meals which allows you to increase the gaps between meals and eliminate snacking.

GETTY

Can you drink alcohol on a Paleo diet?

Sure you can with our flexible approach, you can also eat cake or cookies too, the key is moderation.

As the saying goes it's not a diet its a lifestyle and the reality is there are numerous occasions you don't want to be weighed down by restrictions.

You can join in and celebrate birthdays, holidays and meet friends for a few drinks if that's what you enjoy, then just start the following day with a nutritious breakfast and continue your usual tasty, healthy meals.

If you are looking to lose that belly fat, try these simple easy to follow tips that will help you on the road

1 / 10

Eat every three hours - Passing on breakfast will send your body into starvation mode, meaning your body starts to store everything youve eaten as fat, and youre midsection is the first to suffer the consequences

Do you have to stick to a certain amount of calories per day?

We offer guidance on calories and macronutrients, however, we dont believe in counting calories on a daily basis.

Your calorie consumption is effortlessly reduced whilst still eating a similar volume of food

Educating yourself so you have a better understanding and awareness of foods is essential as this allows you to meet your basic needs and establish healthy portion sizes.

Some people will need to adapt things slightly once in a consistent Paleo-ish routine and possibly increase their protein intake or limit carbohydrates depending upon their body composition and lifestyle.

It's important to note that sleep, exercise, sunlight exposure and stress management play a fundamental role in health and fat loss, we call these maxi-nutrients.

Does the Paleo diet improve your overall health?

The Paleo-ish diet can have an astounding impact on overall health.

The increase in healthy macronutrients plus extra vitamins, minerals and antioxidants improves mood health, enhances energy levels and digestive function.

It also supports a healthy immune system by lowering levels of systemic inflammation in the body and therefore your risk of chronic disease.

Ideally these nutritional changes are implemented alongside increased physical activity, sufficient sleep and a means of supporting mental health with mindfulness and relaxation techniques.

We have helped numerous individuals use the paleo diet as an intervention for type-2 diabetes and other inflammatory driven diseases and achieved great results.

How One Dad Lost 25 Pounds By Having Balloons Put in His StomachSeriously! – Reader’s Digest

Courtesy Adeena FriedIn many ways, Eric Wilson of Dallas is your typical guy. Content with life, hes got a great job, a great wife, and adorable kids, who often speak the truth that others are too polite to mention. It was Wilsons kids (and a less-than-flattering photograph) that finally convinced the dad of three to trade in contented for ecstatic, by doing something about the spare tire he was sporting around his middle.

Like lots of us, Wilson would commit to an exercise routine for a couple of weeks, and then find himself in a workout plateau, falling off his routine, and into the arms of a large container of fries (heres why you probably have hit your own workout plateau). He knew he was overweight, but not morbidly obese. (Morbid obesity is defined as being 100 pounds over your ideal body weight, or having a body mass index (BMI) of either 40, or 35, with health-related issues). Wilsons BMI at 30.12was higher than it should have been, but not to the point where his doctor was crying code red. (Heres a quick explainer on your BMI.) I kept eating junk food, and promising myself that tomorrow would be the day, he says. Wilson found himself approaching the Big Four-0, and was starting to realize that his nasty habits were catching up with him. At the same time, his kids started in on a teasing campaign about his protruding belly and he also caught sight of himself sideways in a photo, and was aghast at what he saw. Coupled with those less-than-subtle knocks on the head was the realization that, at this weight, he wouldnt pass the physical required for him to remain on active duty with the Air National Guard. For Wilson, that was it. It was time for a change.

Wilsons wife works for Obalon, and she clued him in about a new FDA-approved process for weight loss, which uses inserted, expandable balloons, lowered into the stomach, through the mouth. The buoyant balloons take up room in the stomach, reducing appetite, and creating a feeling of fullness. They are inserted one at a time, over a three-month period. When I heard about the technology, I thought it sounded neat. I qualified for it because of my BMI, but thought, I can probably not do this, and get away with it, what am I doing? And then I looked at that photo of myself again, and realized, Ive said this a thousand times. Wilson realized he was powerless over changing his eating habits on his own, and was just kidding himself. So he committed to the procedure.

The Obalon Balloon System is designed for people who are 30 to 100 pounds overweight, and is not currently covered by health insurance plans. (The Obalon cost is around $6,000 to $9,000, based on individual factors). Unlike more radical forms of gastric bypass surgery, this non-surgical system is designed to be a temporary fix, by providing a six-month window during which people can lose weight safely, while receiving counseling and guidance are provided about weight loss and healthy eating (like these 50 best healthy eating tips of all time), and lifestyle habits. After six months, the balloons are deflated, and removed, under general anesthesia. Wilson took full advantage of his six-month window, by working with a dietitian, and listening to her advice. But first, he had to have the balloons put in.

Content continues below ad

The Obalon Procedure

The night before the procedure, Wilson was given a placebo pill. Thats just to make sure you can swallow the Obalon pill. I did not like that part, and found it difficult. I thought to myself, what am I doing? But I had committed to doing it, and was committed to seeing it through. Between the time I had first heard about the procedure and the night before it was scheduled, I had seen my BMI climb, a huge red flag. Wilson went in the next day to have the first balloon inserted. The deflated balloon is tethered to a catheter. They give you some water, and some apple sauce, if you need it. The catheter goes down your throat for around three to eight minutes. The balloon is then opened. If I had been able to laugh I would have, when the doctor said he was waiting for my balloon to hatch. Once the balloon is open, a proprietary blend of gases is sent down through the catheter, to inflate it. The balloon is then set for the altitude of the user. (Scuba diving and skydiving are not allowed while the balloons are in your stomach, but flying, and most other activities, are OK). The catheter is then disconnected, and pulled out through the mouth. The uncomfortable part for me was not being able to talk, and having the catheter tickle the back of my throat.

The Results

Wilson found the first week with the balloon a bit uncomfortable, but has adjusted since then. That first week I thought to myself, what have I done? I was uncomfortable, and had cramping. But I knew those feelings would only last a week, because thats what my doctor told me to expect. Wilson has also lost a significant amount of weight, much to the delight of his kids, who keep asking him where his tire went. I did it for me. My wife urged me to do it for me, he says. Most importantly, the balloons have motivated him to exercise. Twomonths later, with all three balloons inserted, he is now running almost daily, and is committed to making better decisions about food. He keeps a food journal, which has proven to be a powerful tool, and has lost a total of 27 pounds, plus six full inches, off his waistline. He has another four months left on the program, and a goal of losing an additional 10 pounds. Wilson says he can feel the balloons a little bit when he is lying down, and when he is hungry, but has adjusted to the feeling. He has also adjusted to the congratulations, and his new, improved health.

Lou Ferrigno wants to head Trump’s fitness council – New York Post

President Trump may tap a green-eyed superhero with a hair-trigger temper to whip Americans into shape, a new report said Thursday.

Brooklyn-born Lou Ferrigno, who played The Incredible Hulk in the 70s and early 80s CBS TV series of the same name, wants to head up the Presidents Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition to help get the US fit and healthy.

I have been corresponding with President Trump because I want to change America and make America healthy again. I am a top choice for them. I feel I am the best candidate for that, the bodybuilder and two-time Mr. Universe told the Daily Mail.

Nobody can surpass what I do, especially the life I have lived, what I have overcome and my passion with bodybuilding and fitness.

Ferrigno, 65, said he became pals with the exercise-averse Trump, 71, while appearing on Celebrity Apprentice and was as gung-ho taking on the role as his Marvel Comics character would be thrashing a bevy of bad guys.

The council is part of the Department of Health and Human Services and it focuses primarily on public-awareness campaigns a natural for the actor-turned-fitness guru.

Ferrigno, an avid Trumpster, said hes not worried that his lefty pals in Tinseltown will shun him for working for Trump.

Trump is a great president. America voted for him and I am a top choice for him. It is a shame because we have so many different problems. I feel safe with him when it comes to homeland security for our people, he told the website.

Trump, a sold athlete in military school, famously disdains exercise, contending it does more harm than good.

In the book Trump Revealed, Mike Kranisch and Marc Fisher of The Washington Post, wrote about Trumps battery theory of energy.

After college, after Trump mostly gave up his personal athletic interests, he came to view time spent playing sports as time wasted. Trump believed the human body was like a battery, with a finite amount of energy, which exercise only depleted. So he didnt work out, they wrote.

Trump blasts Clapper, who questioned his fitness for office – Politico

It was not clear what letter President Donald Trump was referring to. | Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images

By POLITICO STAFF

President Donald Trump on Thursday attacked former national intelligence director James Clapper, who earlier this week questioned Trumps fitness for office.

James Clapper, who famously got caught lying to Congress, is now an authority on Donald Trump. Will he show you his beautiful letter to me? Trump tweeted, referencing Clappers testimony before Congress in 2013 in which he said intelligence officials did not wittingly collect data on Americans.

Story Continued Below

It was not clear what letter he was referring to.

Clapper laced into Trump following his divisive speech at a Tuesday night rally in Phoenix, telling CNN, I really question his ability to be his fitness to be in this office.

I also am beginning to wonder about his motivation for it maybe he is looking for a way out, Clapper added.

Clapper has been a frequent critic of Trumps, but his comments early Wednesday morning dramatically escalated his rhetoric.

UK government’s fitness app champions daily ten-minute walks – Engadget

The idea is to get app users to incorporate 10 minute brisk walks into their day. PHE says that it's the first app to measure how many chunks of ten minutes -- known as Active 10s -- are achieved each day. Should the user manage at least one active walk, the app can help them set additional goals that will build towards the 150 minutes a week of exercise recommended by the UK's Chief Medical Officer (CMO).

One in every six UK deaths can be attributed to inactivity, which ultimately costs the NHS over 900 million each year. With evidence suggesting that at least one brisk 10 minute walk a day reduces the risk of early death by 15%, the organisation is keen to reduce the costs associated with diabetes, cancer, heart disease and strokes. Plus, there's the added bonus that exercise can help improve mental health.

Sure, there are plenty of apps that promote an active lifestyle, but Active 10 has been endorsed by the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP). Already, GPs across the country are recommending it to their own patients as a tool to help them manage their existing ailments. With additional pressure from the government to better manage its finances, the NHS is embracing a digital strategy to keep people out of its practices and hospitals.

Kellyanne Conway slams Clapper’s ‘absurd analysis’ on Trump ‘fitness’ for office – Fox News

White House Counselor Kellyanne Conway slammed former national intelligence director James Clapper on Thursday for what she called his absurd analysis on President Trumps fitness for office.

Clapper was one of numerous CNN pundits who tore into the president after his late-night rally speech in Phoenix on Tuesday. The Obama-era intel boss called the event scary and disturbing.

On Fox & Friends Thursday morning, Conway called his attack way over the line.

Its such an absurd analysis playing armchair psychiatrist, and its not just him, its a lot of people on TV, Conway said.

She cited the parade of pundits who are conjecturing about the president.

Clapper, who is now a CNN national security analyst, had questioned Trumps fitness to be in this office.

This behavior and this divisiveness, intellectual and moral and ethical void that the president of the United States exhibits, Clapper said. And how much longer does the countryto borrow a phraseendure this nightmare?"

He was far from the only pundit on CNN that night tearing into Trump.

Don Lemon, the host of CNN Tonight, earlier accused the president of trying to ignite a civil war and giving oxygen to racists.

Trumps remarks in Phoenix were reminiscent of candidate-Trump on the campaign trail, slamming the media over its coverage of his presidencyspecifically noting his response to recent violence in Charlottesville, Va.

They are sick people, Trump said of the media. You know the thing I dont understand? You would think theyd want to make our country great again. And I honestly believe they dont.

Trump continued to trash the medias coverage of him, calling out CNN and saying you wonder why CNN is doing poorly.

Lucid Performance will help you improve your mental fitness – VentureBeat

While physical fitness apps are plentiful, mental fitness can be more elusive. So Lucid Performance has created its Mental Fitness Platform to help people improve their focus under pressure.

The company is unveiling the platform today as an extension of its iOS and Android Lucid app. The platform offers five-minute mental fitness workouts based on the training techniques of Lucid adviser George Mumford, a mindfulness and performance coach who has trained the likes of NBA stars Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan.

Its not about relaxation. Its really about positive affirmation, how you manage the chaos in your life to get into the flow and the zone, said Michael Howse, a partner at Eleven Ventures and an investor in Lucid Performance, in an interview with VentureBeat. A lot of this came from a focus on sports performance.

Mumford worked on the Lucid tech with the companys director of mental training, Graham Betchart. For the past decade, Betchart has worked privately with top athletes from the NFL, MLB, and NBA, including the leagues three consecutive No. 1 draft picks from 2014 through 2016.

Besides the app, Lucid will offer long-form educational videos, books, and podcasts, as well as location-based clinics, conferences, and events. The apps have already been downloaded 65,000 times. Now Lucid will add a number of other major sports to the activities it supports.

Our vision is to create a large consumer brand around mindfulness and athletics, Howse said.

Weve provided a true competitive advantage to Lucid users by helping them master the mental game, and were seeing amazing performance transformations, said Jason Stirman, Lucid CEO and cofounder, in a statement.

Focus is a mental skill that anyone can benefit from, Howse said. It helps you visualize yourself completing actions confidently.

Since 2016, the company has also collaborated with 24 Hour Fitness to make mental training performance content and insights available to the latters nearly 4 million members across more than 400 clubs around the country. 24 Hour Fitness has featured Lucids approach to mental performance on its in-club 24Life TV network, with an invitation to the Lucid platform.

HIDE CAPTION

SHOW CAPTION

Stage has garnered criticism for her incredibly fit physique while pregnant. Earlier this month, she posted a video of herself working out and slammed "Instagram medical experts" who had negative things to say about it.

"There are also some people who assume that since I am exercising while pregnant, that I'm obsessed with how I 'look' but in fact I'm obsessed with maintaining a healthy lifestyle that will give my baby and myself the best possible quality of life," she wrote. "Alternatively, I don't judge anyone who chooses to not be active while pregnant etc. as it's their own life ... I'm just sharing my pregnancy journey and appreciate the positive support from most of you."

Stage became an online sensation back in 2015 after photographs of her showing off her washboard abs while nine months pregnant went viral. Despite major backlash on the internet over her fit figure, her son James weighed over eight pounds at the time of his birth.

The negativity clearly hasn't stopped Stage from living her life -- she continues to work out and post fitness photos of herself on Instagram.
