Diet soda once ruled the weight loss kingdom but unfortunately, that time has swiftly passed. At this point, these sweet beverages should come with a warning label. Not only are they one of the worst drinks for diabetics, but diet sodas can also take a serious toll on your brainand the health hazards dont stop there.
A newstudypublished in Current Biologymay convince you to finally drop the pop.According to the researchers, there could be a sweet spot (haha) when it comes to those artificial sweeteners in diet soda.
For the experiment, Yale neuroscientist Dana Small designed five beverages, all of which were sweetened using the identical amount of sucralose, an artificial sweetener. Although each tasted about as sweet as a drink containing about 75 calories of sugar, Small varied the calories using a tasteless carbohydrate called maltodextrin. Each drink contained zero, 37.5, 75, 112.5, 150 calories.
Participants consumed each drink six times over a period of several weeks, twice in the lab and four times at home. Small then evaluated their brain scans to determine how each drink affected the brains reward mechanisms.
Logically, higher calorie counts should yield higher rewards in the brain. But contrary to expectations, the participants brains signaled the highest rewards for the 75-calorie drinkhigher than the 0-calorie drink and the 150-calorie drink. Whats more, their metabolic responses to the high-calorie drink were lower than for the medium-calorie drink. What gives?
As it turns out, sweetnessnot caloriesdetermines the bodys response to food. When sweetness and calories are matched, as with the 75-calorie drink, the bodys reward mechanism and metabolic rate actnormally. Butthe body becomes confused when it tries to digest something that has higher or lower calorie count relative to its sweetness.
Its like the system threw up its hands and didnt know what to do, Small told Vox.
Withyour metabolism thrown for a loop, its likely that the extra calories arestored in muscle, fat, or the liverall of which is pretty bad news. (And if you want to lose weight,avoid this one food at all costs.)
Equally worrisomeis that more and more companies are creating foods that contain blends of sweeteners and carbohydrates, Vox reports. That goes for diet sodas as well as sports drinks like Powerade, which, as Small notes in her paper, contains bothsugars and artificial sweeteners.
Yep, youll definitely want to toss out those soda cansASAP. Your body will thank you.

Trump, of course, ratcheted up the rhetoric on North Korea last week in a series of statements to the media and on Twitter. Most notably, Trump warned he would unleash fire and fury on North Korea if they escalated their nuclear threat.
North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States, Trump said. They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen.

Testosterone therapy has been advocated in the treatment of symptoms that may represent normal aging. We briefly review randomized clinical trials on the effects of testosterone therapy on sexual function.
About half of clinical trials showed no benefit of testosterone therapy on any aspect of sexual function. In those studies showing a benefit on some aspect of sexual function, most sexual function domains were not improved. Testosterone therapy has been disappointing in the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Potential risks of therapy include an increase in thromboembolic and other cardiovascular diseases.
The limited and inconsistent benefits of testosterone therapy for sexual function argue against use of this therapy in aging men, including those with 'low testosterone'.

No, we dont mean you should wake up and eat a slice of leftover cold pizza. Sorry. (Though a freshly baked breakfast pizza sounds like a great idea.)
We just mean you should swap the sizes of your meals. Its a common mistake Americans often eat little to nothing of nutritional value at breakfast and throughout the day and then go absolutely ham at dinner time. Either they go out to dinner and consume thousands of greasy, decadent calories under the misguided guise of Ive been good all day! or they sit down to a bountiful family meal that lasts long enough to go back for seconds or maybe even thirds.
This is a problem. When did we start to think it was a good idea to go hungry when we need our energy most and then make up for it with excess under the canopy of night?
Multiple studies have shown that the healthier choice is a larger and more nutritionally dense breakfast, rather than a skimpy one. Participants in these studies who ate larger breakfasts ended up eating a smaller dinner.
These larger breakfasts effectively combat the vicious restrict-binge cycle that many dieters find themselves whirling through each day: They eat small amounts of food until their cravings take over and they allow themselves to eat. Then, they inevitably overdo it when the body sets off alarmed warnings of eat what you can now before its gone; they then wake up the next morning feeling guilty and prone to restricting their intake again.
While the exact impact of the big breakfast on health is still a point of significant contention, it undoubtedly breaks the cycle by starting the day with a large, satisfying amount of food.
With the exception of night shift workers and night owls, the majority of people are most active during the day. Giving your body energy when it needs to use it is bound to have beneficial health outcomes including, if your body has a lower set point, weight loss. Your set point is the weight and size at which your body functions its best. When you eat healthy and get a moderate amount of exercise, your weight will waver around this set point your bodys happy place.
So the healthier habit of stopping the binge-restrict cycle in its tracks could totally result in weight loss that is, of course, if you need to lose weight at all. Many people deemed overweight by faulty measuring systems such as BMI actually just have a higher set pointand are healthier at that higher weight. Even an obese person can be healthier at a higher weight.
There are multiple reasons to try eating a big breakfast that have nothing to do with weight loss. In fact, big breakfasts have been shown to prevent a number of conditions including Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. One study from Tel Aviv University confirmed it by feeding 700-calorie breakfasts to study participants and observing health benefits that far exceeded expectations. The large breakfast group even experienced lower levels of bad cholesterol. They probably avoided these cholesterol-heavy breakfasts, though and you still should, too.

This summer we have been camp hosting at an Oregon Trail day use visitor park. For my daily exercise I usually walk the 3 mile loop to open the gate, go up to the turn around and around the main trail twice a day rather than drive. A lot of my walking time is spent at a very brisk pace but I walk not only for the exercise but also to commune with nature.
Recently I read an article by Dr. Aaron Baggish an associate director of the Cardiovascular Performance Program at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. In the article he gave some advice on how to dramatically increase the health benefits of walking.
His advice: Try interval walking.
When interval walking was compared to regular walking, researchers found that 30 minutes of interval walking four days a week greatly benefitted overall health through improved aerobic fitness, lowered blood pressure, reduced weight and increased leg strength.
He says interval walking is a great way to get the most exercise bang for your buck. It improves endurance, reduces blood pressure and helps with weight loss.
In a decade long study, Japanese researchers have been studying the benefits for seniors of interval walking for over a decade. Researchers from the Shinshu University Graduate School of Medicine split 696 men and women between the ages of 58 and 72 into two groups. Both groups walked four days a week for thirty minutes a day.
Researchers had one group walk normally at 40% of their full exertion for three minutes. Then they had them speed up to a 70% exertion rate for three minutes. The walkers repeated these intervals five times for 30 minutes total.
The other group walked at a leisurely 40% exertion rate for the entire 30 minutes.
After five months, the researchers compared the two groups for overall fitness, health and weight loss.
Participants who walked casually showed very little improvement. The interval-walking group showed a 12% increase in aerobic fitness, their blood pressure went down 13% and they had greater overall leg strength.
The interval walkers also decreased their overall lifestyle-related disease score. (LRDS) LRDS is a marker related to smoking, drinking, body fat ratio and weight. The interval walkers reduced their unhealthy habits, lost fat and gained muscle mass. (This never appeared in the information but I would guess they also increased their bone density and improved their balance which would decrease the likelihood of a fall and broken bones.)
The researchers continued to follow the participants for a decade longer. They found that the interval walkers even those who decreased the regimen to three days a week maintained or increased their health gains. The study was published in the Journal of Applied Physiology.

The ketogenic keto diet has become incredibly popular in recent years as it focuses on eating plenty and not restricting meals in the same way as other meal plans tend to do.
The diet does involve limiting carbs to 50 grams or less, which puts the body into a state of ketosis, when the body turn to ketones to create energy.
Talking about the plan, Carol Johnston, professor and associate director of the nutrition program in the School of Nutrition and Health Promotion at Arizona State University, revealed how it works and whether she thinks it is a sensible diet to follow.
The science behind the keto diet claims followers must consume a high fat, low carb diet, similar to the Atkins Diet.
Discussing whether she thinks this is sensible, Prof. Johnston said: There is mounting evidence that suggests calorie restricted, low-carbohydrate, high-protein diets are effective for weight loss, and the keto diet is an extreme version of this.
Low-carb diets can be more satiating, allowing dieters to feel full longer, eat less, and thus experience greater weight loss success.
Speaking to medicalxpress.com, she continued: Overwhelmingly, the most important factor in weight loss success is diet adherence. In research trials, most individuals who lose weight regain most of it within a year, regardless of which diet they were on.
Explaining the science behind the diet, Prof. Johnston said: When carb intake is restricted for a few days, glycogen stores in the muscle are reduced. Glycogen is responsible for water retention, so when its levels fall, so do our water levels.
However, she point out, since most of this weight lost is water weight, it will return when the person consumes carbs again.
But despite her assertion that the keto diet mostly encourages water weight to begin with, Prof. Johnston did admit restricting carbs is a good idea for weight management.
She said: When we eat more carbs than we need, they convert to body fat, which contributes to obesity.
In general, average Americans those with a relatively sedentary lifestyle consume more carbs and calories than they actually need.
Another expert who has spoken positively about the keto diet is Susie Burrell, a dietician and nutritionist with two Honours degrees in Nutrition & Dietetics and Psychology.
She has told dieters that there are many benefits to the keto diet plan.
She wrote for news.com of the keto diet: With their superior weight loss and associated reductions in inflammation in the body, there are a number of benefits, particularly for individuals with high blood glucose levels, fatty liver and significant amounts of weight to lose.
She also said: There is no evidence to show that keto diets are damaging to the body.

Its definitely good to hear that it takes most people longer than five weeks to drop 10 pounds (you're not alone if the scale seems stuck!), and that its also doable within three months or so. But if youre trying to drop 10 pounds, its important to keep this in mind: Everyone moves at their own pace.
There are calculations to predict the calorie deficit needed for someone to lose a pound of weight. However in reality, people lose weight as different rates, says Beth Warren, R.D.N., founder of Beth Warren Nutrition and author of Living a Real Life With Real Food. Fatima Cody Stanford, M.D., instructor of medicine and pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and obesity medicine physician at Massachusetts General Hospital, agrees. Its not the rate of weight loss that matters, per se, she says. Its the sustainability of the weight loss. People who are obese, for example, might lose weight at a very fast rate, she says, while others with less excess weight to lose may move at a slower paceand the actual rate doesnt matter as much as someones ability to keep the weight off.
While its tempting to want to drop weight quickly, Warren says its important to manage your expectations and go about it in a smart, healthy way. Losing weight through unhealthy methods could just burn off water and muscle weight, which youll quickly gain back, she says.
Scott Keatley, R.D., of Keatley Medical Nutrition Therapy, recommends starting with small changes before moving on to a new challenge. For example, you might want to try eliminating your late-night snacking habit and adding a serving of vegetables to every meal before trying an entirely new diet plan. "Many patients want to do everything all at once to lose the weight but it's generally not feasible and people give up after a brief period of time only to gain more weight back," he says.

If youre not losing at the pace youd like, Warren says theres likely somethingor several thingstripping you up. I often find with clients that they may not be losing as fast as they can because of small allowance they are making, she says. That can mean having portions that are too large, eating pasta or bread at all meals and during a snack, eating too much later in the day or at night, or treating yourself too often. Typically, if someone is already trying to lose weight, there isn't one glaring issue, she says. Instead there may be multiple small points to adjust over the course of the day concerning their diet.
Whatever youre trying to do for weight loss, Stanford says its important to make sure that its sustainable. Often patients will say that they want to try a certain diet or exercise plan, but I say that if this works for you, youre going to have to do it for the rest of your life, she says. Losing weight on a special diet only to regain it can put your body at a higher set point for weight, she explainsand that can make it even harder to lose it all again. Its important to ask, is this going to be sustainable indefinitely? If not, reconsider the approach, Stanford says. Make sure its something you can continue forever.

Frances Carpenter was raised by her doting single mum who spoilt her with food.
The 28-year-old indulged on greasy takeaways, crisps and sweets until she hit 23st 9lbs and ballooned to a dress size 26.
The software support engineer from California, US, never felt satisfied and was always haunted with self-esteem issues.
But one day she began experiencing pre-diabetic symptoms such as fatigue, blurred vision and frequent urination which shocked her into changing her lifestyle.

After a complete U-turn in her diet and exercise routine Frances is now a slender 14st 8lbs and dress size 14-16.
She went from consuming over 2,000 calories a day to 1,600 a day, while started eating balanced meals and practicing portion control.
I was an emotional eater to put it lightly
Frances said: I have seen members of my family lose their life because of their weight and weight-related health issues, I just didnt want that to be me.
I have been overweight throughout my entire life from adolescence to my teen years; always turning to food as comfort for anything that didnt go my way.

"I went through high school overweight and by my last year of high school, I was around 17st 12lbs."

She continued: The way I grew up, my childhood was not the easiest; being raised by a single parent.
"Never having a father figure around I think contributed to most of my weight gain.
When I was younger, my mother never told me no, I think mostly out of guilt, she felt bad for our upbringing and food made me happy.
It wasnt right but at that point she was just doing anything to try and keep me smiling. I was really trying to fill a void in my life with food.
Even at a young age, I recognised something was missing and I wanted to fix it, I just didnt know how.
As much as she tried to shake the lonely feeling she had by over-eating, nothing was working and a voice in her head kept telling her there was no point trying to lose weight.
But after her health scare, Frances joined CrossFit a fitness programme dedicated to helping people improve their workout routines.
Frances explained: I couldnt sit and wait for some miracle any longer, I just had hit rock bottom and knew I needed to fix it and fast or it was only going to get worse.
I joined a Crossfit gym that completely changed my workout routine.
Crossfit incorporates every type of workout including cardio, weightlifting, gymnastics, and strength training all at different intensity levels.

After growing up eating nothing but fast food, crisps and sweets, the weight loss process proved to be difficult for France but she soon felt better than ever.
She said: The hardest thing for me was the food; living my life one way, always eating whatever I wanted and never thinking whats good or bad for me then all of a sudden - a drastic change.
I was eating different foods, but my mind was still wanting to eat the way I used to.
"Changing my mindset was extremely hard, I am still working on it, but its a lot better than it was."

Frances added: I have had people not recognise me. People are usually shocked at my results. A lot of people congratulate me on the hard work I have put in.
Everyone wants to know how I did it, I get that a lot. Just a lot of hard work and dedication.
I feel healthy, I have tons of energy that I never had before. Im confident, proud and extremely happy. Words cannot describe the feeling.
I have enough confidence to share my story with thousands of people in hopes they also can see how capable they are.
