The seven big fitness trends of 2017 so far – Telegraph.co.uk

What we're now starting to see is that there's a squeezed middle between these two magnetic poles. Health pros who do not yet have a following are competing on price and forcing one another out of the industry.

It's becoming harder for consumers to find quality personal training options without paying top dollar.

Group fitness classes have evolved markedly in recent years symptomatic, perhaps, of the difficulty of finding good personal trainers at a reasonable price.

It used to be that group classes amounted to legs, bums and tums at your local, municipal leisure complex. Now, you can get a range of different classes, whether they're at a specialist centre or simply in a meeting room at work.

HIIT, movement, yoga, pilates, cross training, spinning: there should be something for everyone. And, importantly, because these classes are devised byinfluential experts in the industry and delivered via partnerships with large gym chains, they work from good, thoughtfulsyllabuses.

A great way to get in shape.

Wearable technology is on the up and up, allowing us to track our hours of sleep, daily steps, calories burned and a myriad other metrics related to performance and workout tracking.

Rediscovering water polo recharged his fitness regimen – The San Diego Union-Tribune

Subject: John Martin

Age: 46

Residence: Carlsbad

Long ago, Martin discovered hes a better person when hes active and fit.

I realized, in terms of what Im doing from a job standpoint and life in general, that it was a necessity for me from a mental state, he says. When I do a great workout, I feel amazing. Everything works better. My relationships work better, my job. Im just more efficient.

These days, his focus is water polo. He started the Carlsbad Masters Water Polo club about six years ago and plays three times a week. But hes always been an athlete. In high school in Whittier, he swam and played water polo. At Point Loma Nazarene University, he became a surfer and summer lifeguard. In 2006 he took up triathlons, first shorter sprint-distance races, then half-Ironmans and, eventually, completed a full Ironman (2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike, 26.2-mile run) in 10 hours and 28 minutes. He also qualified for (and completed) the Boston Marathon.

By 2011, he was ready for a fresh challenge, and his son helped steer him in a new direction.

(He) played water polo at Carlsbad High, and I went to all of his games, he says. Its such a great sport. Its short, theres a lot of action. I started watching and I thought, I want to play water polo again.

Together they found a group, Old People Water Polo in San Diego, and played for a while. Thats when Martin found that triathlon shape isnt the same as water polo shape.

I was gassed, he says of his first efforts. I thought, Oh my gosh, this is it. This is my new challenge.

Martin, who owns part of a software consulting company, works out of a top-floor office in his home. He also keeps weights, a variety of equipment and a stationary bike nearby, so he can squeeze in workouts during his day. The goal: to stay fit, play well in the pool and be able to get the most out of life for as long as possible.

Three water polo sessions a week are part of John Martins fitness routine.

My goal is, I want to be able to play with my grandkids, he says. I dont want to be in bad health. Lets take care of this house (body) as it gets older, as long as I can.

Aside from three water-polo sessions per week, Martin also takes part in a masters swimming program, does Orangetheory fitness (which stresses high-intensity interval workouts), runs along the coast near his home and pedals his stationary Peloton exercise bike. Ive kind of hung up my road bike, he says. Its just so dangerous. Ive known five or six people that are dead. You cant win that.

For water polo, he needs leg strength. Players tread water using circular egg-beater patterns with their lower legs and feet. That allows them to rise up to catch passes and take shots. If you dont have the leg strength, the egg-beatering, Ill be hanging on guys, all my weight, and theyre still up with the ball. Its just uncanny leg strength.

In water polo theres a lot of skill, and I love the team element of it and the strategy, he says. To me its more of a social thing. Its working my brain more than triathlon.

For several years, hes followed an intermittent fasting program called Appetite Correction (fast5.org) in which he only eats between the hours of 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Martin says it allows his body to tap into his fat as a fuel source and work more efficiently. During his eating period, hell focus on healthy foods sometimes. Often, hell eat whatever he wants. I can take down a pint of Ben & Jerrys, he says, laughing.

A key is to not set too big a goal, he says of exercise. Consistency is important.

For those whove been inactive, take it easy at first, with whatever it is, be it running, swimming, biking or something else. Dont increase more than 10 percent a week and stay with it, he says. Dont give up.

Health Check: RI woman finalist for Next Fitness Star – Turn to 10

by BARBARA MORSE SILVA, NBC 10 NEWS

Angela Gargano is going for the gold in the fitness world. She's vying to be Women's Health magazine's Next Fitness Star. (WJAR)

A Rhode Island woman is going for the gold in the fitness world. She's vying to be Women's Health magazine's Next Fitness Star.

Her name is Angela Gargano and she believes strong looks good, but feels even better.

Yeah, it's all about just being strong, being able to show your strength, said Gargano. It's not just about lifting weights, not just about looking good, its about being strong. Her passion: helping others, like 10-year-old Sophia Cicerone of Cranston build her strength for sports and 47-year-old Kristin Delesesto of Scituate, get stronger. She does this through her newly relocated gym in Cranston, called AGAthletics.

She got the idea of strength training after competing as a gymnast at Rhode Island College beginning in 2008.

"And then I tore my ACL in 2010 and that kind of really opened up my eyes to the fact that I really need to be stronger throughout my entire body," said Gargano.

But it wasn't right away. This 27-year-old who graduated with a degree in biological chemistry, went on to work for a pharmaceutical company before she began taking part in fitness competitions.

"Not the normal fitness competitions where you're just body building, she said. I was doing the ones where you were doing full gymnastics, flipping routine."

Gargano started winning national titles, and recognition. But then she heard about Women's Health magazine's Next Fitness Star.

"One of my clients actually sent me an email and they said you really need to apply for this and I always look at things. No way," she recalled.

But she did apply anyway -- sending in video, pictures and a write up about herself and her goals -- and now is among the top five, gracing the cover of Women's Health with the other finalists.

"All the women on the cover are awesome," said Gargano.

As far as winning?

"I really feel like I already won," she said.

Here's how you can help Angela become America's Next Fitness Star. You can vote for her as many times as you'd like until Friday. Then on August 22nd, those votes along with the celebrity judge's votes will be tallied and a winner named.

2018 Honda CRF250R First Look | 20 Fast Facts – UltimateMotorcycling.com

Forget updatesthe 2018 Honda CRF250R is an all-new motocross motorcycle from the knobs up. Lets take a look at the essential facts you need to know about the new CRF250R.

1. The 2018 CRF250R is all-new. Facing declining CRF250R sales, Honda has brought out a motocross motorcycle that is almost completely different from last years edition.

2. Electric starting is standard. Well get to the performance improvements in a moment, but weve all been waiting for an electric start CRF250R, and now we have it. A lithium-ion battery in the airbox helps manage the additional weight.

3. The 2018 Honda CRF250R follows the Absolute Holeshot ethos of the CRF450R. As were all aware, holeshots are a first-class ticket toward winning. So, Honda has reconfigured the CRF250Rs motor and chassis to give it that needed jump off the gate. Focus was put on more power, more rear grip, and less front-end lift.

4. The long-running Unicam design is replaced by a DOHC valve train. The 2018 CRF250R is about revs, as youll see, so Honda went to a DOHC design for the first time in CRF250R history.

5. Sucking in more of the fuel/air mixture gets the power pumping. As a result, Honda claims the new CRF250R is smoother off the bottom, with more midrange and top end power. All four valves are titanium with a more compact valve angle. This also allows more room for the new downdraft intake, plus a new airbox and intake system Honda says increases air-charging efficiency.

6. A bigger bore and shorter stroke means a higher rev limit. Honda shortened the stroke by a significant 2.9mm and there is a new bridged box piston that is now 79mm wide (a bump of 2.2mm). Also, the compression ratio gets a small nudge.

7. To aid the higher revving, the CRF250R gets a new crankshaft with an H-shaped cross-section. Weight is reduced by more than 12 ounces, yet Honda says is has the same rigidity and internal mass.

8. The torque and horsepower peaks come later, so youll want to rev the new CRF250R. Honda isnt shy about itpower is down a bit in the lower half of the rev range, and then comes alive for the upper mid-range and top end. Timid racers should like the softer bottom, while those who like to slam the rev limiter will love the new shrieking top end.

9. The 2018 Honda CRF250R gets a fully independent dual exhaust system. With all that air pushing through the motor, the new exhaust system features two separate headpipes and mufflersthere is no crossover. Honda claims more power and improved throttle response from this system.

10. Theres a new single-system for the oil. Running just 1250cc rather than 1600cc saves about 11 ounces of weight. There is also a shorter oil path to the engine, plus a new piston oil jet that sprays the bottom of the piston. The system reduces pump loss by maintaining negative pressure in the crankcase.

11. More power means a new clutch for the CRF250R. There are now two friction materials, instead of one, which should provide a better feel. The shape of the clutch has been changed, as well.

12. The transmission gets a stronger and lighter material, plus revised gear ratios. With a new powerband, new ratios are a must. The primary ratio is lower, with the five-speeds getting raised slightly.

13. There are three engine modes on the 2018 Honda CRF250R, and two can be remapped. Standard is fixed, and you can adjust Smooth and Aggressive to your liking.

14. The new chassis has a shorter swingarm and wheelbase, along with a slightly relaxed rake. The 15mm-shorter swingarm puts more weight on the rear wheel, which is part of the Absolute Holeshot effort, while the shorter wheelbase should make the 2018 Honda CRF250R more agile. To keep the front end down, rake is kicked out a tenth of a degree.

15. The new frame focuses on front-end stability. The frame sits a bit lower and farther forward, and cuts the weight by 12 ounces (theres that number again!). Tapered aluminum main spars in the frame are designed to improve the feel of the front end.

16. Like the CRF450R, the 2018 Honda CRF250R now has a titanium fuel tank. It also sits lower and drops 18 ounces from the weight of the bike. This is a critical place to lose weight, as it sits so high on the motorcycle.

17. The Showa SPG fork is a coil-spring design and the shock sits lower on the shorter, lighter swingarm. The swingarm goes on a 7.7-ounce diet (being shorter helps reduce unsprung weight), and the bottom shock mount is lowered and now centralized. The spring Showa fork has a 39mm piston and 25mm rod.

18. Dunlop Geomax MX3S is the rubber of choice. These are high-end tires, so unless you ride on extreme hard pack or sand, you wont have to switch out tires for your first ride.

19. The 2018 Honda CRF250R bodywork has been redone. It is now slimmer for reduced air resistance, and the graphics are molded into the plastic. Also, more air is directed to the radiator for the higher-revving motor.

20. The price is a secret. Well let you know when we know.

Growth hormone in sports – Wikipedia

Growth hormone in sports refers to the use of growth hormones (GH or HGH) for athletic enhancement, as opposed to growth hormone treatment for medical therapy. Human Growth Hormone is a prescription medication, meaning that its distribution and use without a prescription is illegal.[1] There is limited evidence that GH doping improves athletic performance, although the perception that it does is common in the sporting community.[2] Potential side effects of long term GH doping could mirror the symptoms found in sufferers of acromegaly, a disease in which the anterior pituitary gland produces excess growth hormone.[2]

Human growth hormone occurs naturally in the human body. Use of exogenous human growth hormone (HGH), via injection, was originally for medical purposes until athletes began abusing HGH with the goal of increasing their abilities. Before recombinant human growth hormone (rHGH) was developed in 1981, HGH was only available from cadavers. The arrival of rHGH combined with other peptide hormone advancements has increased the availability of HGH on both the legitimate and black markets.[3] The first description of the use of GM as a doping agent was Dan Duchaines Underground Steroid handbook which emerged from California in 1982; it is not known where and when GM was first used this way.[4] In 1989 the International Olympic Committee became the first to brand human growth hormone a banned substance.[3] Although abuse of human growth hormone for athletic purposes is illegal in the U.S., over the past decade it appears that abuse of HGH is present in all levels of sport.[5][6] This is fueled at least in part by the fact that HGH is more difficult to detect than most other performance-enhancing drugs, such as anabolic steroids. Athletes competing in power sports, bodybuilding, professional wrestling, mixed martial arts, swimming, baseball, strength sports, track and field, cycling, soccer, weight lifting, skiing and endurance sports have been said to abuse human growth hormone, including in combination with other performance-enhancing drugs such as androgenic anabolic steroids including testosterone, certain products which claim to enhance HGH, and erythropoietin (among others).[3][5][6][7]

There has never been an adequately large randomized controlled trial showing definitively that HGH provides benefits to athletes and that there are no significant adverse drug reactions; there have been many small studies and several of these studies were recently reviewed and analyzed in a meta-analysis.[5] While the authors indicated that the meta-analysis was limited by the fact that few of the included studies evaluated athletic performance and by the fact that dosing protocols in the studies may not reflect real-world doses and regimens, their conclusions were as follows:

"Claims that growth hormone enhances physical performance are not supported by the scientific literature. Although the limited available evidence suggests that growth hormone increases lean body mass, it may not improve strength; in addition, it may worsen exercise capacity and increase adverse events. More research is needed to conclusively determine the effects of growth hormone on athletic performance."[5]

With regard to adverse drug reactions, there is data from animal studies that "long-term administration of human growth hormone can increase the risk of diabetes, retention of fluids, joint and muscle pain, hypertension, cardiomyopathy, osteoporosis, irregular menstruation, impotence and elevated HDL cholesterol."[6]

A report from the United States House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on steroid and growth hormone use found that the misguided use of HGH by professional athletes and entertainers was fuelling the industry peddling the drug to the general public for medically inappropriate uses.[8]

Studies have found that HGH reduces body fat[5][7] and increases lean body mass.[5] However, no increase in muscle strength was observed.[5][6] This may be explained by short-term fluid retention.[5]

Researchers are still debating whether the more noticeable muscles are larger in size as well. It should be clarified, though, that muscle mass is not the same as muscle strength. Some say that human growth hormone will build muscle mass through raised insulin-like growth factors levels leading to heightened protein synthesis without any side effects[9] while other researchers argue that there have been no such findings on young healthy adults.[7] The second argument is more supported by research discoveries that HGH affects muscle protein synthesis no differently than a placebo does.[3]

HGH may build up connective tissue within muscles, at least in the short term.[7] If these effects are real they may promote resistance to injury or faster repair [but] would make the muscle no more capable of force generation.[7] With the release of the Mitchell Report on December 13, 2007, 86 players were revealed to have used performance-enhancing drugs while playing in the Major Leagues. The report stated: "Players who use Human Growth Hormone apparently believe that it assists their ability to recover from injuries and fatigue".[10]

Acromegaly patients, who suffer from natural growth hormone levels of up to 100 times higher than normal, have lower stamina towards physical activity than people with regular levels.[7] When the patients are treated and their growth hormone levels decrease, their stamina improves.[7] This knowledge is part of the evidence behind the new belief that athletes who use supplemental HGH to raise their levels far above average could actually decrease their exercise tolerance, and thus hurt their athletic performance.[7] Further backing was provided in a study done by the Danish Institute of Sports Medicine. They found cyclists of good health and endurance were unable to complete accustomed cycling tasks after administration of exogenous hGH and concluded that HGH can inhibit recuperation from exercise.[7] Participants have also been found to have lower stamina after HGH treatment along with higher rates of fatigue.[5]

Health & Wellness: 3 no-nonsense ways to kickstart a fitness routine – Daily Herald

Have you ever had those days when all you needed was just a little more energy? A little more strength? And maybe a 44-ounce soda to liven things up a bit?

OK, I admit the soda is not an essential part, but feeling better and having more energy to get through the day is something most of us want. A national survey by AARP and Abbott found that one in two adults over the age of 50 wished they had more energy and strength to participate in the activities they enjoy.

And yet, with the easy access to processed foods, our lack of exercise and busy, stressful schedules, we arent getting any closer to improving our health. Until today.

It is never too late to enjoy the health benefits of a daily fitness routine, and here are three ways to get started:

With the popularity of cardio dominating most exercise routines, people sometimes forget that lifting weights remains one of the most effective ways to build muscle mass, reduce bone loss, improve cardiovascular function, strengthen cognitive functions, ward off disease, and reduce the risks of depression. Exercise is a lifelong commitment, adding health benefits at every stage of life.

For older adults, hitting the free weights as little as three times per week can reduce the risk of falls, the leading cause of injury in older adults. Jeremy Osmond, M.D., director of rehabilitation at Provo Nursing and Rehab, says that even just getting out and walking or doing mild but consistent exercise programs will increase your general lower extremity strength and make falls much less likely.

Although caloric restrictions while dieting will likely wreck any long-term weight-loss progress, intermittent fasting simplifies the process of eating and controlling calories.

Heres a simple definition of intermittent fasting, James Clear, a strength training expert says. You eat your normal amount of food in a smaller time frame. Its not a diet; its just a pattern of eating that reduces your eating window each day to about eight hours.

The big advantage of fasting is the build up of the Human Growth Hormone (HGH), which naturally handles cell growth and regeneration. A healthy dose of HGH increases muscle mass, cognitive function, and slows the progression of age-related degenerative diseases. A popular model is an 18-hour fast with a six-hour eating window or a 20-hour fast with a four-hour eating window.

Experts at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute say the health benefits of getting some decent shuteye every night range from better brain function to reducing the risks of heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke.

Sleep plays an important role in your physical health, they said, adding that sleep is necessary to heal and repair the heart and blood vessels.

When it comes to fitness, sleep is the key to making sure your body functions properly.

When your insulin is functioning well, fat cells remove fatty acids and lipids from your bloodstream and prevent storage. When you become more insulin resistant, fats (lipids) circulate in your blood and pump out more insulin, health contributor Adam Bornstein says. Eventually this excess insulin ends up storing fat in all the wrong places, such as tissues like your liver.

And this is exactly how you become fat. Even worse, you become more susceptible to disease.

You know you need more energy to get through your day. Now, you can have it. By adding strength training to your daily routine, controlling diet and getting a good nights sleep, you will be on the right track to better energy, improved strength and a rockin new life of better health.

Fans Weren’t Saying ‘Bud,’ They Were Saying ‘Boo’ At Selig’s Hall Of Fame Induction – Press Box

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. -- If indeed there is no crying in baseball, a sentiment popularized by a classic line from the movie "A League of Their Own," then surely there is no booing in Cooperstown. But, as Bud Selig, could attest, there was a little of both during the 78th Hall of Fame induction ceremony July 30.

As the game's ninth commissioner, Selig presided over a period of unprecedented financial growth and ushered in a sorely needed era of labor peace that included an overdue drug testing program. But for the general public it wasn't enough to hide the two black marks of his tenure -- the strike that left the 1994 season without a World Series and the so-called Steroid Era that demolished home run records and eventually led to the testing agreement.

Selig was one of two executives inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame, along with Baltimore native John Schuerholz, and former players Jeff Bagwell, Tim Raines and Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez. To say Selig got a lukewarm reception from a crowd of approximately 27,500, you would have to tune out the smattering of boos that accompanied his introduction -- perhaps the first time an HOF inductee got less than a positive reaction.

To his credit, while making sure to address the progress the game has made, Selig didn't ignore the lingering effect the 1994 season and the Steroid Era have on his legacy. He called the impact of the 1994 season the worst time of his life, a feeling shared by a significant contingent from Montreal, who were on hand to salute Raines' career with the Expos.

Many observers believe Montreal was the best team in baseball and headed to the World Series in 1994 -- and when the season was suspended without champions in either league, it signaled the beginning of the end of Major League Baseball in Montreal and led to the Expos eventually moving to Washington.

It was also significant Selig went out of his way to praise the late Michael Weiner, former executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association, who was instrumental in agreeing to the 2011 Collective Bargaining Agreement that included blood testing for Human Growth Hormone.

Perhaps because many in baseball had turned a blind eye to the impending effect of steroids and HGH, that era undoubtedly was well under way when Selig became acting commissioner in 1992. Had Bart Giamatti lived to serve even a nominal term, Selig would have been little more than an active adviser, but instead, after a four-year indoctrination that included the devastating labor strife of 1994, he became the second-longest tenured commissioner in history.

Most of the owners who endured the fallout of the 1994 season believe the repercussions of that development led to what has become the longest stretch of labor peace since the first strike in 1972. But whether the pluses outweighed the minuses for baseball, it was evident July 30 that fans still consider the lost World Series of 1994 more important than anything good that may have resulted.

It's an era, much like the one that produced performance-enhancing drugs, that remains the biggest black mark for baseball since the gambling scandal in 1919. Within the industry, Selig gets extremely high marks for guiding baseball through a series of crises and controversies -- but there are hard-core fans who put 1994 and steroids together under his watch. And, oh yes, let's not forgot the 2002 All-Star game that ended in a tie -- in Selig's home town of Milwaukee, no less -- and resulted in a tumultuous 14-year debate over the merits of the game determining home-field advantage for the World Series.

Which is why there was some booing in Cooperstown.
