Read More..Aaron Rodgers pokes fun at Tom Brady’s diet while giving his Hail Mary secrets – SB Nation

Aaron Rodgers has made a name for himself with the Hail Mary touchdown pass, which he executed three times in a span of 13 months. If you see Rodgers and the Packers setting up for a Hail Mary, theres a good chance hes going to complete it. In a recent interview with Talk of Fame Network, Rodgers was asked about the secret to completing a Hail Mary:
Youve mastered the art of the Hail Mary. Youve hit them against Lions, Giants, and Cardinals. So whats the secret to completing a prayer?
Rodgers: Heh, you gotta be clean living. You gotta live a really clean life.
He was being facetious about it, possibly poking fun at Tom Bradys healthy lifestyle, which is getting turned into a meal service a la Blue Apron. His real answer comes down to a combination of things: Practice, throwing the ball really well, and having opposing players misjudge where the balls going to land. Thats a formula for an exciting play and/or a kick in the groin if youre not a Packers fan.
As for the Tom Brady joke, its important to remember how much respect he has for the Patriots quarterback. As Brady gets older and closer to eventual retirement, Rodgers looks at him as inspiration for staying in the NFL until hes in his 40s. They also have something in common when it comes to dieting. Rodgers recently revealed he stopped eating dairy products because it gave him irritable bowels a bummer for the people of Wisconsin, but allergies are no joke. Bradys diet made peoples heads turn at the time he doesnt eat strawberries, but apparently hes OK with avocado ice cream. And sure, everyone can make jokes about what Brady does and doesnt eat, but hes got five Super Bowl rings, so there must be some magic behind that diet.
You can listen to the full interview on SoundCloud.

Coffee diet: Can you slurp your way to slim? – The Mercury News

Whats better than the aroma of fresh coffee brewing in the morning? How about the notion that the deep dark elixir of the dawn may actually be the key to losing weight. Oh yeah.
In his book, The Coffee Lovers Diet, Dr. Bob Arnot finds that coffee may well be a super food because it can boost weight loss by giving your metabolism a good, strong jolt in addition to a sense of alertness. He says it can also reduce the impacts of fatty foods and help you burn more calories than a non-coffee drinker.
Sure beats the heck out of kale, eh?
First, theres an increase in metabolic effect, Arnot said in an interview with People. Youre going to burn 100 more calories a day by drinking coffee than if you havent.
Arnot says consumers should drink hot, black coffee right after each meal, before bathing and just before exercising. He says this practice should be coupled with a sensible diet.
Some nutritionists caution that the effects of that cup of joe dont last forever, as the New York Post noted.
Caffeine can boost athletic performance, both in terms of measurable exercise outcomes such as speed, power and endurance, as well as psychological benefits in terms of making exercise seem more achievable, said nutritionist Kristen Beck. Coffee can suppress appetite simply by providing a boost of energy, but (the trouble with) relying on coffee as a source of energy is that it is only short-term.
Other health experts note that coffee has also been associated with reducing the risks of conditions such as Parkinsons disease and Alzheimers disease, not to mention type 2 diabetes. It may even blunt the danger of several kinds of cancer.
Theres limited but emerging evidence that coffee is associated with lowering the risk of several cancers including colorectal, liver, ovarian, pancreatic, esophageal and endometrial, says Alex Hodge, a gastroenterologist specialist at Monash Health in Melbourne, Australia. It has all those beneficial associations.
All of these perks makes sense to Arnot, who believes that the consumption of coffee helps the body break down fat.
Coffee at the end of a big fatty meal decreases the amount of fat thats absorbed and decreases the amount of sugar thats absorbed, says Arnot. If you give somebody a high-fat meal, their vascular function deteriorates, which over time can be a great risk. With a very high-phenol coffee, we blunted that response and actually improved vascular function.
Certainly ending a meal with an espresso has long been a time honored practice in Italy, where the day is marked by very distinct coffee rituals.
Of course, health officials are quick to note that the use of coffee is like the spark plug in a car. If you dont also put some fuel into the body, it will still run out of gas. A little common sense can go a long way.
Experts also caution that if too much coffee makes you stressed, anxious or sends your heart racing, you may need to scale back, as ABC reported.
Not everyone can handle drinking coffee all day long, especially if they have trouble falling asleep at night. If coffee makes you jittery, this may not be the diet for you.
Also, before you dash out the door in search of double carmel mocha drizzled with chocolate syrup, remember that we are talking about the health benefits of java, not sugar and cream and all the other goo we now adorn our coffee drinks with. If you pile on all that stuff, its more like having dessert, no?

From the porch steps: To age well, maintain a good diet – Daily Commercial

When my mother was 90 years old she had just survived her first surgery and even attended her birthday party given by her granddaughter, Jessie. She sat up in a rocking chair and smiled at everybody, but as the party wore on she began to sink down in the chair and was not holding her head up well. She was never very strong again after that surgery and soon after, took to her bed. Her youngest son, who still lived at home, took very good care of her and was occasionally supported by sisters Jean and Frances. I was living in Florida at the time.
Today, more and more folks are surviving until 90, and even 100 and beyond. This can pose a problem for those who care for them. Many of us still maintain our own homes and take care of ourselves. Maintaining a good diet is probably the most important and most difficult thing for an aging person. When you get as old as 90, your energy sags and your ambition pretty much goes with it.
I have a wonderful group of friends who are both older and younger than me. We get together often and compare notes. We used to depend on TV dinners but have, for the most part, quit them for many reasons, including the salt content. Also, except for a few favorites such as stuffed peppers, they really aren't very good.
The first and most important thing you can do and really the easiest is to keep plenty of high-nutrition items on hand that take little or no preparation. Most fruits fit into this category. I especially enjoy strawberries, blueberries, oranges, peaches, avocados and bananas. Plain yogurt can be made very tasty with the addition of any of these fresh fruits. Don't buy the fruit-flavored yogurts because they contain too much sugar.
Vegetables such as tomatoes, carrots, celery and greens can be easy to prepare and very nutritious. Don't bother with lettuce. A head of lettuce contains very little nutrition and it won't keep very long. Cabbage is better. It keeps longer and contains more iron. The produce man at Publix told me that you don't have to buy the large bags of leafy greens if you can't use that much. They will sell you just as much as you want. One person cannot eat a large bag of greens before they become wilted and unappetizing.
If you help an elderly relative shop, you might suggest a rotisserie chicken when they are on sale. They are very tasty. A single chicken costs around $6 and will make four or five meals when served with potatoes, a vegetable and salad.
Eggs are very versatile. They can be prepared many ways for breakfast, lunch and dinner. When hard boiled, they are a great addition to a salad. They are rich in protein and many amino acids.
Lean ground beef is a good thing to keep in small packages in your freezer. You can make patties and freeze them separately or use it in spaghetti or chili of other 'easy to prepare' dishes.
Fish is a really convenient and easy-to-prepare protein. It used to be inexpensive but is no longer. When you buy it, be sure to ask the clerk to package it in single portions for your freezer. You can broil it or fry it. I like to prepare two portions, and use one and save the other one for another meal. It saves time and pans. You can reheat it in the microwave.
If you are fortunate enough to have a circle of friends who like to occasionally go out to dinner, you will find that as you get older, your appetite decreases. What is one meal to younger folks can make two meals for you. Ask the waitress to box what you don't eat, and take it home for a second meal. This makes going out to dinner a reasonable expense.
My friends and I give each other suggestions when we discover something new. We find most canned soups too salty both for our taste and for our good health. If you look you can sometimes find low-salt items. Fruits canned in water are good to keep on hand and even make a nice dessert. I also like canned vegetables, which some of my friends don't like. Always check the salt content. A regular-sized can of peas, corn or beans provides enough vegetables for three meals for me. I simply warm them up in the microwave while the rest of my meal is cooking.
If you have any questions or have some suggestions, just email me. I will be glad to answer you. I am certainly not an expert, but I have been living alone for many years and sometimes struggle for the energy to shop and prepare food.
Here's to your continued good health.
If you are a caregiver, I hope this helps you provide for your aging friend.
Oh, emergency! I am out of peanut butter. I have to go to the store!

Abby Eberly: Do detox diets work? – GoErie.com

Swimsuit season sparks discussion about these restrictive diets.
Detox diets. Every year, people start asking questions about them, especially when swimsuit season nears.
Detoxification is the process of removing toxic substances from a living organism or environment.
Detox diets typically involve a period of fasting, followed by a strict diet of raw vegetables, fruit and fruit juices, and water. Some include supplements and herbs; others call for colon cleanses.
Methods include chelation therapy, colon hydrotherapy, dietary supplements, special diets and liquid fasts.
Popular detox diets for weight loss include the One Pound a Day Detox, the 10-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse and The Master Cleanse. Each promotes rapid weight loss, is very restrictive in calories, and claims to remove toxins from the body.
While research shows there are indeed toxins in human bodies and that there can be negative health effects from these toxins, there is no scientific evidence that detox diets actually remove toxins from the body. Medical disclaimers state the diets are based on the opinions and ideas of the author and that anyone attempting these diets should consult with a physician beforehand.
So why do so many people claim to feel better after detoxification? It may be due in part to the fact that a detox diet eliminates highly processed foods that have solid fats and added sugar.
When used for weight loss, these diets are very restrictive, expensive, unrealistic, and hard to follow. While there may be some weight loss for those who manage to successfully stick to the plan, most will have difficulty keeping the weight off once the diet has ended.
For those who insist on trying a detox diet, it is highly recommended that you consult a physician before starting it.
This may not be the advice people want to hear especially during the aforementioned swimsuit season but slow and steady wins the race. It is far better to adopt a healthy, balanced diet that enables you to lose weight gradually over time and keep it off.

What CrossFitters Can Learn from Bodybuilding – BarBend (blog)

I like to do silly things. If you read my article on attempting to run 100 miles in 24 hours with nothing but strength training behind me, then this statement wont surprise you. While that particular endeavor was a glorious failure in the sense that I came up short by 38 miles, I learned so much about how my body works in those 24 hours that has since made me a better athlete today. So when my training partner told me that he was going to get in shape for a bodybuilding show by sticking almost entirely to CrossFit training, I was interested enough to follow him around with a camera and track his progression.
CrossFit Kroys Head Coach, Ricky T, before and after
Honestly I expected Rickys attempt to go about as well as my run, but I was wrong. Eight weeks out from the competition, Rick had lost 10kgs, looked more muscular, was moving better, and was actually a little bit stronger. Which I suppose shouldnt be surprising given that in recent years CrossFit has become a bit of a go to for the average guy or girl on the street who wants to lose a little fat and gain a little muscle. And for good reason, too: big compound movements, hard work, and good diet is a potent combination that works. It was working wonders for people long before it was neatly packaged and trademarked, back then though it was just thought of as lifting and conditioning.
In those early days, bodybuilders and strength athletes were for the most part one and the same, with many bodybuilding shows being split into two parts, the first being the typical posing routine and the second a strength element typically a weightlifting competition. As such the strong had to look good and the jacked had to be strong.
And whether we admit it or not thats what most of us want, to not only be strong and athletic but to look as well. With that in mind there are a few things strength and functional fitness athletes can learn from the bodybuilding world.
One of the great things about bodybuilding is that it forces you to honestly assess the state of your body. When you get on that stage you cant hide behind flattering clothes, good lighting, or that filter that makes you look jacked; youre laid bare. In prep for his competition the first thing Ricky did was strip down and take a load of relaxed photos in neutral lighting (outside) to give him an honest starting point. The results were as expected; he was softer than hed thought.
Abs that were fully visible under the overhead lights of the gym werent popping anymore, and muscles that look great flexed appeared flat. While modern day strength sports dont require an aesthetic component, keeping track of your body fat levels is still important, not only for performance but for health as well. You could argue that extra body fat might help you better fit a suit but aside from geared lifting that excess body fat wont make you a better athlete, it will however put your health at risk.
Chances are if you take this whole competitive fitness lark seriously youll be doing a lot right already. Just look at the CrossFit Games athletes and you will see just what incredible shape that style of training can get you in, with most of the competitors looking like they are only a water cut away from being able to step on a natural bodybuilding stage (a rabbit hole we wont go down today). So if youre not as lean as youd like to be, chances are that its your diet thats holding you back.
Take stock of what you are eating; do you really need to go 1000 calories over maintenance just to fuel todays 40 minute session? For that matter, do you even know how many calories youre eating? If not try for a week plugging everything you eat into an app like myFitnessPal, this will not only make you aware of each food choice but also provide reliable feedback on the total calories and breakdown of the macros.
The other thing you notice when you get some brutally honest photos taken is that often you are not the perfectly proportioned greek god you thought you were. Dont worry, you are not alone; years of jerking anything heavier than 80kg over head has left me with zero shoulders, Ricky struggled with hamstrings being relatively smaller than his quads, and everyone else has their weaknesses, too. Sadly, just doing more of the big lifts probably isnt going to make the situation any better and might even just make it worse.
In big compound lifts your body will work out the most effective way to move the weight, favoring the stronger muscles and protecting the weaker ones. To counter this you need to target those weak muscles and those weak muscles alone. This wont just make you prettier but will also help you add kilos to your compound movements. Something I was skeptical to believe for a long time until I saw Rickys deadlift shoot up at a lower body weight, the only difference a tonne of hamstring isolation work.
For the general population Paleo is fantastic, anything that cuts out the refined foods that litter the vast majority of diets can only be considered a good thing. However, just like BMI is good for the general populace but terrible for athletes, Paleo too can fall short for those pushing the limits in training. If you are training hard at least 7 times a week while adhering to a strict Paleo diet, you could be missing out on a lot. Mainly enough carbohydrates to recover fully between sessions.
And if you are eating Paleo for fat loss and are seeing progress slow down, you might want to start looking at packaged food again. Packaged food comes weighed and measured, while natural food does not. Something I only truly appreciated while watching Ricky whittle a jacket potato down to 100g before cooking it. As the weeks went on and motivation waned, this just became an unnecessary drain and more and more of his carb sources came from packaged products like grits: Foods that were tamper proof, so that he couldnt accidentally add a little more here and there when he was hungry. Those grams and calories add up.
At 8 weeks out Ricky was stronger than ever and flying through WODS; at four weeks out he was struggling mentally but still able to hit 90% of his 1RMs on most lifts and was still coherent enough for skills like double-unders. With ten days to go though, that all fell apart. It was like talking to a dead man, a dead man who does nothing but slowly pedal an Assault Bike and curl. On 800 calories a day you cant do much else.
If you want to be a strength athlete, you can learn a lot from bodybuilders. No sport requires more total dedication and disregard for your own misery but dont let it go too far. Keep yourself lean, train accessories and dont be dogmatic in your eating. But if you do go down the bodybuilding rabbit hole, dont worry; fueled by a weeks worth of pizza, he was doing a fitness comp a few days later.

9 weight-loss tips that actually work – Globalnews.ca

Pledging to a weight-loss plan isnt the easiest thing to do but its made even harder when the plan doesnt work.
Trendy diets promoted by celebrities may seem like a good solution, but experts warn that those diets are difficult to sustain (not to mention were not privy to all the extra training and meal planning that their charmed lives afford).
You have to start with a mind shift that eating healthy and daily motion is non-negotiable, says Kathleen Trotter, Toronto-based fitness expert and author of Finding Your Fit.
Part of that shift also involves having the correct information about weight loss and fitness.
READ MORE: Weight loss and fitness trends to expect in 2017
For starters, weight loss is 90 per cent diet and 10 per cent activity, says Calgary-based registered dietitian Jessica Tong. You cant outrun your plate. What you put into your body is what counts.
The experts share some of their top tips for weight loss that will produce actual results and are actually sustainable.
Mindful eating is half the battle, Trotter says. And not just because you could be unaware of how much junk food youre eating in a dayit applies to healthy foods too.
Almonds are healthy, but if youre eating 10 handfuls every day, thats going to lead to weight gain, she says. Thats why she advises against noshing while youre cooking or keeping a jar of snacks on your desk.
But the real first line of defence is keeping a food journal.
Until you know what youre doing wrong and what youre eating, you cant fix it. But when you do know, you can make tweaks that will give you results.
Its a clich as old as time: breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But its true.
Breakfast sets the foundation for the rest of the day. It helps to control your hunger hormones and curbs cravings, Tong says.
People who skip breakfast will set themselves up for hunger that will build throughout the day and culminate in making poor food decisions later on. Then you fall into a cycle of saying, Well, theres no point in eating healthy today, Ill just start tomorrow.'
Adequate amounts of protein are important, but so are the right types.
Cheese and almonds contain protein, but the percentage isnt that high and youre getting other things like fats and lots of calories, Tong says.
WATCH BELOW: Healthy eating tips
Egg whites, lean meats and fish are protein-dense foods that arent high in fat.
While Tong recognizes the importance of natural sources of fat in your diet, she says that consuming a lot of it (like on plans like the Paleo diet) can lead to negative repercussions like high cholesterol levels.
Ever since the Atkins diet swept North America, weve been vilifying carbohydrates, and now it has extended to all foods containing gluten.
Its not carbs or gluten that are the problem, its the excess consumption of them, Tong says.
She says that disrupts the macronutrient balance we should be striving for the even consumption of carbs, protein and fats and leads to weight gain. Its not the carbs themselves.
Look for healthy sources like fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, and beans and legumes.
Eat more of them, Trotter says. And drink more water.
These are obvious things that when you say them to people, they always respond, Oh, I know, but they dont do it. Drink more water and eat more vegetables at every single meal.
READ MORE: Healthy vegetable chips arent always healthy. Heres why
It doesnt have to be a kale salad, either. Tong says if youre drawn to the starchier vegetables, like butternut squash, carrots or peas, incorporate them in your diet.
This will create a habit around eating vegetables on a regular basis. Even if you never graduate to eating kale, youll be inclined to branch out and incorporate a wider variety of vegetables.
Its no secret that booze is loaded with sugar and calories, which is probably why it tastes so good, but thats also why it leads to weight gain.
Since it gets digested and absorbed very quickly while not providing any satiety, its easy to overdo it.
Even if you go from two glasses of wine per day to just one and you dont change anything else in your diet or fitness routine, it will equate to a 10-pound weight loss in one year, Tong says.
The good thing is, youll still get a drink every day.
Although nutrition experts have been telling us for years that calorie-counting isnt the golden rule of weight management, that doesnt mean you should ignore them altogether.
Exceeding your caloric intake by 150 calories one or two days isnt going to derail your weight-loss efforts, but consistently consuming an excess of 150 calories per day will amount to a 15-pound weight gain in one year, Tong says.
Those extra calories can look like a three-quarter cup of rice, one-and-a-half glasses of wine or a heaping tablespoon of peanut butter.
The next time you find yourself craving a piece of cake or some potato chips, pause, Trotter says.
Make yourself do something else for 15 minutes, because if youre occupied, you wont mindlessly eat, she says. If youre at a party, go talk to someone or drink a glass of water. You want to disconnect from your food trigger.
READ MORE: Can two weeks of clean eating make you healthier?
Then if youve waited the 15 minutes and still want that cake, go ahead and have a small portion. At that point, youve considered the pros and cons of eating it, and youll likely make a wise decision about how much you need to satisfy your craving.
Motivation is created, its not found. Once youve shifted your perspective and you know you want to get fit, commit to moving every day, Trotter says.
And when it comes to working out, the biggest obstacle is often just starting.
Trotter tells her clients to force themselves to do the activity, whether its running or riding a bike or doing yoga, and tell yourself youll just do 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, its highly unlikely that youll stop, because youre already doing it and you probably feel good about it.
She also advises getting a fitness buddy to work out with you at the gym or even just to walk with you after dinner.
Youre way more likely to do something if someone is waiting for you, and itll make it much more fun.

Losing your sense of smell may help you lose weightand it has nothing to do with taste – Quartz

When Andrew Dillon, a cell biologist at the University of California Berkeley, set out to study the effect of the sense of smell on weight in mice, he assumed that hed find that mice without a sense of smell would enjoy food less, eat less, and therefore weigh less. Scientists have known that smell shapes the way we tastes thingsusually for the betterso without it, mice eating even a scrumptious, high-fat diet would enjoy it less.
He was rightkind of. The results of work he and his team published on July 5 in the journal Cell Metabolism show that adult mice without a sense of smell did weigh about 16% less than those with their sniffers intact. But the reason came out of left field: It was because somehow, without a sense of smell the rodents burned more energy from fat.
I was convinced they were just eating less, he told the LA Times. When it became clear they werent, I thought, Wow, this is incredibly interesting.
The team of researchers studied normal adult mice, and then a group of adult mice who had been genetically modified to lose their smelling abilities after a whiff of a chemical in a lab. They fed both groups of mice either regular diets or high fat diets for three months. On the regular diet, mice without a sense of smell weighed only slightly less, but on the high fat diet, the difference was much more pronounced. Furthermore, when overweight mice had their own sense of smell removed, they started losing weight, too.
When the researchers examined the amount of food each group was eating, they were surprised to find that it was more or less the same. So was their exercise. However, the mice without a sense of smell seemed to be burning a different kind of fat tissue that uses more calories.
Mammals like mice (and also us) have two kinds of fat tissue, both of which we need. Theres brown fat, which helps keep us warm by making heat, and then theres white fat, which is used as energy reserves (and is typically associated with weight gain in humans). Infants tend to have a lot more brown fat than adults, and mice tend to have more brown fat than humans.
When the researchers examined the fat content of mice after the experiment was over, they found that mice without a sense of smell seemed to be using more of their brown fat tissue than the others.
Theres a long road of research ahead before scientists can say whether losing a sense of smell can bolster weight loss efforts in humans. But Dillin thinks this work opens the door for more research into the relationship between smell and brown fat. Theres more to gaining weight than just eating foodits how you are perceiving the food, he told Science.
