Ketogenic diets for weight loss: High fat, low carb regimen works if … – NEWS.com.au

Looks like a pretty great breakfast, but most people cant stick to a no carb diet long term.

IF YOU have any interest in the world of diet and nutrition chances are you would have seen reference to a keto, or low carb, high fat (LCHF) approach to diets and weight loss.

Used clinically for many years, specifically in the area of epilepsy where it is used to help reduce seizures, ketogenic diets are also known for their relatively quick weight loss outcomes. Not a new area of nutrition but one that has become increasingly popular in recent years, the question is, is a ketogenic diet the right diet for you?

Ketogenic diets refer to diets that are particularly low in carbohydrates (ranging from 5-20%, or 20-50g of total carbohydrates and high in fats (up to 75% in total fat). This is as opposed to standard diets which contain 30-50% carbohydrates and just 30% fat or less. Diets that are much lower in carbohydrate than the muscles and the brain typically need to function shift the body into a state known as ketosis in which fat stores in the body are broken down into ketones which fuel the muscles and the brain in place of the carbohydrates when they are in limited supply. The result is enhanced fat burning and relatively quick weight loss as compared to a traditional dietary approaches.

There is no evidence to show that keto diets are damaging to the body. In fact, with their superior weight loss and associated reductions in inflammation in the body, there are a number of benefits, particularly for individuals with high blood glucose levels, fatty liver and significant amounts of weight to lose.

The primary issue with keto diets is that the total amount of carbohydrate consumed needs to be kept very low, or the body will quickly come out of ketosis. For example, a low carb diet for most of the day followed by an extra snack of chocolate or piece of banana bread will quickly negate any of the potential benefits of ketosis as the total amount of carbohydrate rises above the upper limits of 50g or so for the average adult.

Any diet including a keto approach will work if people stick to it. but in the case of keto diets, unless you are prepared to eat no grains, bread, cereals, fruit, starchy vegetables or sugars for long periods of time, it probably is not for you.

This Tuna crudo, burrata cheese, avocado and cream of tomato from Ormeggio restaurant in Sydney looks appetising, but avoiding carbs every day will probably be difficult.Source:News Limited

A keto diet uses foods that are high in fats to such as nuts, avocado, oils, oily fish and cheese to replace carbohydrate in the diet. For example, eggs and smoked salmon for breakfast, tuna salad with cheese for lunch and steak and avocado for dinner. While this dietary approach may appeal at first, the average person tends to get sick of eating such as limited variety of foods over time and will often crave more fresh fruit, grains and sugars over time which makes long term compliance, especially when individuals regularly eat in social environments challenging.

While the Atkins Diet promoted a low carb, high fat approach, the main difference with modern keto approaches is that the focus is on good fats such as olive oil, nuts, seeds and oily fish as opposed to fatty meats, full cream dairy and butter, for which a high intake is linked to increase blood fats. It also appears that the weight loss benefits and positive impact on inflammation in the body that is the result of a keto approach appears to negate any issues with consuming a high-fat diet in general, as long as the good fats dominate.

A less frequently mentioned issue with weight loss as a result of a LCHF diet is what happens when individuals return to their usual eating habits. While keto diets will work as long as they are followed, returning to a high carb diet is likely to result in rapid weight gain. Whats worse is if you try a LCHF diet again, you are unlikely to be able to replicate the results. This is because a reduction in metabolism has resulted due to muscle mass loss as part of the initial weight loss process. For this reason, when using a LCHF diet, expert advice to support a transition back to a regular style of eating is crucial to support long term weight loss maintenance.

Another big issue with a pure keto approach is that the diet tends to be relatively low in some types of fibre as grains, cereals and much fruit is eliminated. This can result in constipation, gut discomfort and means that the gut is not receiving the prebiotics known to benefit gut health and immune function long term. For this reason when planning a keto diet, much attention needs to be paid into the types of vegetables and supplements consumed to attempt to preserve gut health and function.

Keto diets and the fans that swear by them often refer to the improved physical and mental performance associated with consuming fewer carbohydrates. New research published by the Australian Institute of Sport to date has not supported this finding, with athletes on a LCHF diet failing to see the improvements in performance compared to a higher carb approach. While this is just one study, it does question the physical performance benefits often claimed by fans of LCHF diets.

So should you try it? Any diet will work when it is followed. The primary issue with a keto approach is that people do not do it properly to get the best results, or they are not compliant for the long periods of time it takes to get significant weight loss. If you do have significant amounts of weight to lose, or are struggling with high blood sugars or a fatty liver, it may be worth a try but do it with supervision from a dietitian to make sure you are doing it the right way to get the best results without damaging your metabolism or gut health long term.

Ever wondered how to live a long and healthy life? Here are some tips we can learn from our brothers and sisters overseas!

8 reasons why you aren’t seeing the weight loss results you want – Belfast Telegraph

8 reasons why you aren't seeing the weight loss results you want

BelfastTelegraph.co.uk

You're doing everything you know you should be doing in order to lose weight, but you're not seeing the results you want - this can be frustrating.

http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/life/health/8-reasons-why-you-arent-seeing-the-weight-loss-results-you-want-35889539.html

http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/uk/article35741777.ece/82da3/AUTOCROP/h342/PANews%20BT_P-0896bd48-75fb-48a3-9a1d-e46f26bb444f_I1.jpg

You're doing everything you know you should be doing in order to lose weight, but you're not seeing the results you want - this can be frustrating.

You've made numerous big changes in your lifestyle, you're following a training programme, and you're tracking your food intake to make sure you're eating a calorie deficit. So, why aren't you losing weight?

If you're struggling with weight loss, even when you think you're doing everything right, there's a number of reasons why you might not be seeing the progress you'd like.

So, to help out, here's 8 of the most common reasons why your fat loss progress might be slower than it could be:

As weight loss is a matter of energy balance, first thing's first, you have to rule out the possibility that you are in fact still eating too many calories.

Milk in your tea, that biscuit you lifted as you walked past the tin, the leftover chips you ate off your kid's plate- it all adds up.

If you haven't already, try tracking your food intake thoroughly for a week (MyFitnessPal is a great tool) to determine where your calorie intake is sitting. It's often higher than you might realise.

When all the cogs are put into motion, fat loss can happen very quickly at first. However, many people get disheartened once that progress begins to slow.

The 3 or 4lbs you were losing every week soon maybe only becomes 2 or maybe only 1lb, and it suddenly seems like it will take you much longer to reach your goal.

Pushing for a high rate of fat loss every week often leads to fad diet approaches and is a much harder process to sustain. Be realistic with your targets by aiming to lose 0.5-1.0% of your bodyweight per week.

Stuck to your diet for a week? Great! But it'll take many more weeks to get to where you want to be.

People want results overnight, but fat loss takes time and consistency. We can't expect huge results across short timeframes, so it pays to be prepared for the long haul, and to make sure you're following an approach you can keep consistent with across the coming weeks and months.

Believe it or not, as you lose weight and get leaner, your metabolism actually slows down.

A lighter body requires less energy to keep itself running than a heavier one, so the calorie intake you had been eating to successfully drop weight may no longer be effective.

To kick fat loss back into motion, try dropping your intake by a further 10-15% and monitor progress from there.

Feeling sluggish? As weight drops, the body tries to conserve energy to prevent it losing more, so you may find your general activity levels start to decrease.

Unfortunately, less energy burnt means less fat loss.

Consider setting a minimum target for daily general activity, to help sustain those levels - a daily goal of 10,000 steps is a great target.

When we train, our level of calorie burn increases. After a hard training session, we will often go and eat a large, calorie dense meal in order to "refuel" and begin recovering.

However, people often mistakenly assume that they've burnt a lot more calories in their session than they actually have, so that post-workout feast may be unintentionally cancelling out your negative calorie balance.

Ever realise how after a couple of weeks of doing a workout, it starts to feel easier and easier?

Your body naturally adapts and begins to become more efficient, so you won't find it as challenging.

However, an efficient machine burns less energy, so that workout may no longer be giving you the calorie burn it once did.

Continue to challenge yourself in your workouts in order to keep your energy output high.

Checking your bodyweight weekly? Sometimes it's not enough to give an accurate idea of how your body is changing.

Bodypart measurements and progress pictures are two additional ways to keep tabs on your progress. You might be disheartened if you see very little change on the scales and be tempted to give up, but your progress pictures might show a noticeable change in your bodyshape that the scales won't pick up on.

Think about it, if you lose 2lbs of fat but gain 2lbs of muscle, the scales show no difference, but you've become leaner.

Don't rely on just one gauge of progress - it's often deceptive.

Enjoy a Mediterranean diet for colorectal health – The Jerusalem Post

Steamed fish with carrots. (photo credit:BOAZ LAVI)

The most important lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of colorectal cancer are: eat more fish and fruit and minimize consumption of soft drinks. So said Dr. Naomi Fliss-Isakov of Tel-Aviv Sourasky Medical Center at the European Society of Medical Oncology 19th World Congress on Gastrointestinal Cancer currently being held in Madrid.

We found that each one of these three choices was associated with a little more than 30% reduced odds of a person having an advanced, precancerous colorectal lesion, compared to people who did not eat any of these components. Among people who made all three healthy choices the benefit was compounded to almost 86% reduced odds.

Colorectal cancer develops from intestinal polyps and has been linked to a low-fiber diet heavy in red meat, alcohol and high-calorie foods, said Fliss-Isakov.

And while the Mediterranean diet has been associated with lower rates of colorectal cancer, the definition of what elements in the diet are the most beneficial has not always been clear.

Using dietary questionnaires from 808 people between the ages of 40 and 70 who were undergoing screenings or diagnostic colonoscopies, the research team was able to look at the fine details of the respondents daily meals. None of the subjects had a high risk of colorectal cancer.

Adherence to the components was defined as consumption levels above the group median for fruits, vegetables and legumes, nuts and seeds, whole grains, fish and poultry and a high ratio of mono-unsaturated to saturated fatty acids, as well as below the median consumption of red meat, alcohol, and soft drinks.

The investigators found that compared to subjects with clear colonoscopies, those who had advanced polyps reported fewer components of the Mediterranean diet. Yet even consumption of two to three components of the diet, compared to none, was associated with half the odds of advanced polyps.

Odds were reduced in a dose response manner with additional Mediterranean diet components meaning that the more components people adhered, the lower their odds of having advanced colorectal polyps.

Meal Replacement Shake Review

A sampling of feedback and experiences shared by our community.

I am a 48 year old male with a fairly unactive lifestyle. On May 16, 2011 I started the Medifast diet following the 5/1 plan. My starting weight was 325 lbs. I am 11-1/2 weeks into the diet and have lost 58 lbs.

I come from a family of excellent cooks. Are the food offerings gourmet quality? No. However, they aren't, in general, as horrible as people say. Sure, there's a few clunkers out there but, for the most part, there are so many varieties that you should be able to find your way through. - Greg 8/5/11

I am 49 yrs old...5"5" and I started my program Aug 8th 2010 at 172 lbs I lost 45 lbs in 14 weeks! It's easy and the results are rapid. The first week I lost 8.5 lbs and the first month 17.5 lbs and then I averaged about 2.5 lbs a week. I have been reading lots' of discouraging people on here in regards to the food. Yes, there are some of the meals that you will not care for. But, you will figure out your likes and dislikes right away. Just don't eat more then one pkg out of each box for any returns. For me personally ..I love the bars and like the rice cakes, pretzels and puffs vanilla and mocha shakes yum! - Lorrie 8/4/11

I started medifast around October 2010. I went from 165lbs to about 142lbs in 3 months. I was very pleased. Unfortunately once I became comfortable being able to fit in my own clothes again I stopped the program. I did not start the maintenance program. My own fault. I ended up gaining my weight back and have started weight watchers and it's been successful so far. So depending on wether or not I would of stayed on the program I would have a better review. So it does work, and I do like it. But it was not for me and the food gets old quick! If you keep to it right, and do not cheat! I would cheat just for one day with some medifast and maybe a real meal with the family and I would be gaining a pound.. Just keep to it. - Alyssa 7/4/11

This diet works without a doubt as long as you can stick thru it. It is VERY difficult the first few days but once you make it thru week 1 the cravings pretty much go away. The food will also begin to taste better, however its best to try everything because not everyone like everything. I personally just do the shakes and brownies sometimes the scrambled eggs. They also have a great community site for advice and support and you can get great ways to doctor it up the meals too. The weight definitely comes off quickly and you see results weekly on the scale on with a measuring tape which is great motivation. Of course it has its downside like every diet the weight can come back quickly and more, but only if you don't go into the transition stage and gradual reintroduce foods back into your diet and maintain a healthy balanced diet. - Izzy 5/17/11

The Medifast diet consists of five prepared meals and one "Lean and Green Meal." (L&GM) known as the Medifast 5 & 1 plan. Your L&GM will consist of a lean protein (a seven-ounce serving of chicken, turkey or fish, or a five ounce serving of beef, pork or lamb) with a tablespoon's worth of condiment like ranch dressing, ketchup or mustard. You will also choose your side dish, which can include a salad, or raw or cooked vegetables. You will always eat at least three servings of vegetables in your L&GM.

The Medifast program encourages you to keep your metabolism high and avoid hunger by eating every three hours. It also recommends that you stay hydrated by drinking your choice of calorie-free beverage, preferably water, consuming at least 64 ounces each day. While your Lean and Green Meal and beverages are up to you, the rest of your meals will be chosen from the dozens of low-calorie, high nutritient meal-replacement items that Medifast delivers directly to you. With options like puddings, oatmeal, shakes, and scrambled eggs, it's hard to get bored.

At the beginning of the program, you will remove high carbohydrate vegetables from your diet like corn and carrots, to jump start your weight loss. You'll slowly introduce these items back into your diet over time and they can be a part of your diet in the maintenance phase, if you wish.

While on the Medifast program you dont have to worry about counting anything; calories, grams of fat and carbs are all controlled and you can expect to lose between two and five pound per week. The Medifast meals are made with 24 different vitamins and minerals to keep you full and satisfy your nutritional needs.

A typical day of eating on the Medifast program looks like:

The Medifast website offers an exercise guideline document, but there is specific workout program. Medifast recommends getting daily exercise, but your intensity, mode and duration are left completely up to you. They suggest running, jogging, swimming, dancing or walking, but with such a low calorie, structured program, getting your daily 30 minutes reccommended for health should be enough for you to successfully drop weight.

Medifast recommends waiting two to three weeks before introducing exercise if you do not already exercise regularly. You should also consult your physician if new to exercise. Start slow, and gradually increase you time and intensity as you feel things become easier. If you have been exercising consistently prior to starting Medifast, it is recommended that you reduce your intensity and duration of exercise for the first couple of weeks so your body can adjust to your lower calorie levels, and do no more than 45 minutes of vigorous exercise each day during this time period.

Medifast suggests, as do we, that you find something that you enjoy for your workouts so you are more likely to stick to them. The gym isn't your only option. You can take up jogging outside, dance classes, swimming, or biking to get in some exercise while finding a new activity you enjoy.

John Mackey of Whole Foods Market on the Healthiest Way to Eat for the Planet – One Green Planet

There have to be at least 1,000 different diets you can choose from today. From low-carb, paleo, vegan, and everything in between, there is hardly a shortage of options or information about those options out there for people. While some turn to their diets when they are struggling with their health, it can be extremely confusing and overwhelming to know exactly what to put on your plate to start feeling better. Now, of course, following one particular diet may not work for everyone, and professionals are generally the best purveyors of advice to those who are having problems with certain foods, but amidst all the debate over whether gluten is healthy or if coconut oil is good or evil, there is undoubtedly a set of basic guidelines that most people can agree on.

Similarly, if youre looking to refine your food choices to have the least negative impact on the planet and animals, you might find yourself bombarded with labels that boast sustainable or humane but there is a pretty simple solution that can help you get the most personal benefit while having the least impact on the planet.

So what is the catch-all solution to our looming health and environmental concerns? Well, if you ask John Mackey, CEO of Whole Foods Market, you need look no further than the ground.

As a pioneer in the organic and natural food space, Mackey has likely seen thousands of products bearing every free-from label possible and though his stores might be known for their impressive array of fancy, and healthy, frozen and packaged foods he sticks to one simple dogma: eat a primarily whole foods, plant-based diet.

In a recent episode of #EatForThePlanet with Nil Zacharias, Mackey details the in-depth research he did to develop his latest book The Whole Foods Diet, and shares the tips that he picked up from Blue Zone areas, regions of the world with the highest life expectancy. In addition to sharing tips for optimal longevity, Mackey gives his thoughts on plant-based proteinsand clean lab-grown meat. As a vegan, he has some opinions that might make others angry in regards to his stance of processed meat alternatives but Mackeys goal isnt to please people, its to help keep them healthy and he is very unapologetic about this.

The bottom line is we are in the midst of a global health and environmental crisis that is very closely tied to our food choices. If we continue to maintain a food system that favors meat, dairy, and processed foods although it is conspicuously making people sick and hindering our future ability to produce food we simply wont be able to feed a population of 9.7 billion people by the year 2050. Now, Mackey knows this and he has grand plans to live past the age of 100, so when he lays out a whole foods, plant-based diet as a solution to both these burning issues, he means it.

For more tips on how Mackey eats well while on the road and other practices he has fostered to ensure his own optimal performance, check out the episode!

Don’t blame the calves – High Plains Journal

Things arent always what they seem.

Its no secret, marbling in harvested fed cattle declines from late February to early May each year. That coincides with a seasonal switch from yearlings to calf-feds in the harvest mix, which often gets the blame.

Yet, recent data from the University of Minnesota suggests we should reconsider the blame game; or, at the very least, not let it deter cattlemen from feeding calves a high-energy diet (calf-feds).

Its interesting that perception is out there, given theres knowledge that calf-feds actually marble better, says UMN animal scientist Alfredo DiCostanzo.

He and Ph.D. graduate student Haley Johnsons meta-analysis of 32 studies on the effects of pre-finishing strategy (backgrounding or stockering) on feedlot and carcass performance leaves little room for the long-held belief. Todays economic conditions, beef genetics and value-based markets certainly favor a calf-fed approach.

Still, thanks to that seasonal pattern, the opinion is engrained in our business, says Paul Dykstra, beef cattle specialist for the Certified Angus Beef brand. Hes glad to see a summarizing study on calf-fed marbling, because theres no doubt they can do it.

This analysis matches that of our own feedlot partnership database at CAB, he says, noting its reach across 2 million cattle records from 80 feedyards in 16 states.

DiCostanzo and Johnsons data shows cattle fed a high-energy diet in the backgrounding phase achieved higher average marbling scores than cattle backgrounded on winter wheat, those exposed to unlimited forage with a restricted ration, or grazing dormant grass prior to the finishing phase.

Plenty of feedlot nutritionists agree with these findings because theyve seen this for a long time themselves, he says.

So why the contradiction between perceptions, trends and facts? CABs Justin Sexten sees answers in the questions.

Its a complex system, influenced by many factors, the brands director of supply development says. Historical data alone wont show the complete picture because todays cattle genetics offer much greater potential than 10 or 20 years ago.

Yearlings today can gain two pounds on a moderate level of energy. Calf-feds now reach finished weights once unimaginable.

DiCostanzo says his teams research aimed to explain the mechanisms of backgrounding that enable marbling and permit heavier finished weights, regardless of seasonal trends.

Cattle will always sell on pounds, yet there will be added rewards for marbling.

Producers must ask, What am I going to give up so I can get this other thing? DiCostanzo suggests. I think the correct mix is somewhere in the middle, where a combination of weight and marbling achieve the greatest value, particularly when the Choice/Select spread is wide.

If the spread is favorable, they may consider employing a little more energy into calves backgrounding diets or reducing the backgrounding period so that cattle dont get so heavy, making them susceptible to discounts.

Theres a long list of reasons why quality grade takes a hit each year. Young calves are more prone to sickness in the early stages of feeding and the first calf-feds harvested are often lighter. Weather and origins come into play, and there are wide differences in genetic potential.

DiCostanzo cites his South Dakota colleague Robbi Pritchards findings that, given at least average marbling ability and enough time, long feeding periods on forage need not derail that marbling potential. Good genetics provide more options, he suggests.

You have the best of both worlds if youre able to background to about 800 pounds, no more than that, and at that point turn them onto a high-finishing diet, harvesting at 1,400 lb. That should be able to give you both weight and marbling, DiCostanzo says.

It should motivate sellers of superior-marbling Angus cattle to consider the typically wider Choice/Select spread, Prime and CAB premiums featured in the spring as a margin-enhancing target, Dykstra says.

Since both yearling and calf-fed programs can each work without sacrificing grade, most producers can find ways to reach their optimum target.

We need to have this discussion to get past that first impression to try and have a more objective conclusion on this, DiCostanzo says.

Weight loss: Why eating MORE carbs could be the secret to transforming YOUR body – Express.co.uk

Carbohydrates have been largely demonised in the world of weight loss.

Many people try out low carb diets in a bid to shed the pounds.

Some studies have even suggested they can reverse Type 2 diabetes.

But one nutritionist thinks carbs have an unfair reputation, insisting that we should eat more of them to achieve weight loss.

Australian nutritionist and dietitian Susie Burrell says carbs are an essential part of our diets.

GETTY

An inability to lose weight despite eating a low carb diet is a clear sign that your total carbohydrate intake is too low

Susie Burrell

Not eating enough of the food group, says Burrell, could actually be hampering your weight loss efforts.

She told Body and Soul: An inability to lose weight, despite eating a low carb diet is a clear sign that your total carbohydrate intake is too low, especially if you exercise regularly.

As a general rule of thumb, intakes of less than 80-100 grams of carbohydrates each day, for someone exercising regularly is too low and as such may be the reason you are not getting the shifts on the scales you are hoping for.

Burrell advises eating 20-30 grams of carbs within an hour of a high intensity workout in order to properly fuel your muscles.

This is because your body needs glucose to burn fat when you exercise.

GETTY

If you restrict carbs too heavily, you also risk slowing down your basal metabolic rate.

This in turn spikes your cravings for sugary foods which can lead to bingeing.

Burrell said: Over time these cravings may relieve but you may also find you no longer feel hungry at all, as your metabolic rate slows to manage the lack of carbohydrate.

Another unpleasant side effect of a low carb diet is bad breath, which occurs when the body goes into the state of ketosis.

Burrell explained: [This] is the bodys way of surviving when carbs are low by converting fat stores into a fuel that can be burnt.

GETTY

Someone in ketosis has a very specific smell and may have terrible breath.

Despite encouraging carb intake, the nutritionist warned against stuffing your face with pizza, white bread and pasta.

The dietician insists its the good sources of carbs we should be eating.

Plant based foods like rice cereal, fruit and starchy vegetables are the best for releasing glucose into the blood stream, according to Burrell.
