Weight loss: Are you making THIS common calorie mistake when trying to lose weight? – Express.co.uk

There is an overwhelming amount of advice when it comes to losing weight.

The conflicting information can lead to confusion about which method is the most effective.

From which food groups to eat and when to eat them, from what exercise and how much, there are many variables which can help you along your road to health.

But there are some mistakes many of us are making which can prevent weight loss.

One of the first areas people are usually advised to control if they want to shed pounds is calorie intake.

GETTY

The calories in-calories out deficit can lead to sustainable weight loss, according to experts.

Women are recommended to eat 2,000 calories per day to maintain weight on average, while men are advised to eat 2,500.

For weight loss of one pound per week, these numbers fall to 1,500 and 2,000 respectively.

But taking this method too far will have the opposite effect.

A survey of 2,000 British adults discovered that 44 per cent didnt know what their daily calorie intake should be.

Eating too few calories is one of the major mistakes people make when it comes to downsizing.

1 of 12

GETTY

Not consuming enough calories can significantly slow down your metabolism, having the opposite effect to the one you desire.

A 2008 study published in the Environmental health Prevention Medicine journal found short-term energy restriction led to a significant decrease in basal metabolic rate (BMR) for participants.

Another study published in 2015 found eating too few calories leads to a fall in insulin secretion and body fluid balance.

So how many calories should you eat to lose weight? That comes down to the individual, according to experts.

The NHS has a free BMI calculator to give you a better idea of how many calories you should be eating each day.

GETTY

It's great to be aware of calorie needs because it forces you to measure portions

Elizabeth Ward

Dietician Elizabeth Ward told Womans Day: "Determining the right number of calories for your body is highly educational if you have never paid much mind to calories before.

It's great to be aware of calorie needs because it forces you to measure portions, so if you can learn how many portions you need for a healthy weight, you can quit thinking about every calorie.

Dietician Erin Palinski-Wade said: "Be aware of your total calories needs and intake. Focus on a meal plan rich in fiber, plant-based fats, and lean proteins to promote satiety, which will naturally help you to control your portions and lose weight while taking in nutrients that promote health."

As a general guideline, women shouldnt dip below the 1,500 calories per day recommendation and men should stick to at least 2,000.

Otherwise your body may go into starvation mode and refuse to lose weight.

Don’t become one of the 50 percent – Idaho State Journal

Here is a startling statistic: About 50 percent of those beginning an exercise program will quit within six months. This isnt surprising, because if you are like me, motivation to keep going is tough. There are days where all I want to do is park my backside on the couch, watch a bunch of movies and eat a bag of Boom Chicka Pop. (If you dont know what Boom Chicka Pop is, it is a sweet and salty kettle corn that will take you to your happy place.)

One of the most influential factors when beginning an exercise program is whether or not you see yourself capable of doing exercise or eating differently. The more capable you see yourself, the more likely you will start a program. For example, if you see yourself having the ability to attend an exercise class, you are more likely to take that first step to give it a go.

The opposite holds true if someone does not see themselves as being able to. When you add a qualified instructor to guide you, the odds that you will continue as well as exploring other fitness avenues will increase.

The next step in your motivating yourself to continue your program is what is called your self-efficacy, which is the belief that you will succeed in certain situations or tasks.

This is where having a professional, such as a personal trainer, dietician or health coach, encouraging you is worth the investment. A professional will design exercise and nutrition programs that will not only fit your needs, but allow you the successes to achieve your desired results. They also understand and recognize how quickly you will be able to move forward.

For example, in the first four to five weeks of a new program, nutrition is often the most difficult aspect to grasp. Thus when discussing nutrition, your successes will be celebrated and they will help you with small adjustments to continue moving forward.

Your self-efficacy, and in turn, your success in a fitness program, is dependent upon how you set your goals. Setting goals, however, can be difficult. You may want to lose weight or get stronger. How do you measure such goals? You have to be SMART.

SMART is an acronym for goal setting, Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely, that provides guidelines to take what can be an elusive task to a manageable level.

When goals are set in such a manner, you succeed and in turn enhance your self-efficacy and consequently increasing your motivation, creating a cycle that cant be beat. If you are having trouble setting your SMART goals, this is another excellent reason to hire a professional whose job is to help you succeed.

The next big motivator to continue a fitness program is support and social interaction. Regardless of the task at hand, when you have support from family, friends and professionals, your desire to succeed will increase. Those supporting you should be your biggest fans and be with you every step of the way. You can also find support in group classes or training with a partner.

When you dont believe you have the above-mentioned characteristics, a plethora of excuses can take center stage and hold you back. Excuses such as not enough time, cant afford it, too tired, body aches, etc., are red flags that you may need the help of a trainer or health coach to help you find those deeply hidden motivating factors. These are your intrinsic motivators.

Extrinsic motivation is an external form of motivation, whereas intrinsic is an internal motivation. For example, losing weight to look good at your class reunion or wedding are extrinsic motivators verses improving your overall health and the desire to live a long life are intrinsic motivators.

The problem with extrinsic motivators is they are often short-lived, i.e. the class reunion, and are reliant upon others acceptance, none of which are long term. Intrinsic motivation, on the other hand, usually leads to permanent behavioral changes the changes that will lead to that long, healthy life.

Whether you are just starting a fitness program or have been rolling for some time, to avoid being in the 50 percent that quit, your motivation must be originating from the right places. By the way, an occasional bag of Boom Chicka Pop wont be your downfall. Every now and then, we just need to go to our happy place.

Murray confirms his fitness for Wimbledon – Reuters

LONDON Andy Murray will begin his Wimbledon title defense on Monday after confirming his recovery from a hip injury that has disrupted his preparation for this year's tournament.

"It's felt much better the last few days," the world number one told a media conference on Sunday.

"If I feel like I do today, I'll be fine to play the tournament. I'll be fine to play seven matches."

Murray, who will play Kazakhstan's Alexander Bublik, a lucky loser ranked 134, in the Centre Court opener on Monday, said he felt no lasting effects from the injury which caused him to pull out of two exhibition matches at London's Hurlingham Club last week.

"I've had hip problems since I was very young," said the Scot, who added that he had benefited from several days' rest. "It's not something new to me. It's just been very sore the last few weeks.

"It was giving me quite a lot of trouble moving to certain shots and getting into certain positions.

"This is an extremely important tournament, so you worry a little bit. It's a little bit stressful if you can't practice for a few days.

"You really want to be preparing, training as much as you can to get ready and make you feel better, especially when you hadn't had any matches."

Murray confirmed British media reports that he and his wife Kim are expecting their second child, but said it would not distract him in his title defense.

"We're both obviously very happy and looking forward to it," he said.

"I've had family the whole time I've been playing tennis, so yeah, I'll be fine dealing with that. It's certainly not a distraction in the slightest."

Murray, who has won Wimbledon twice in the past four years and reached at least the quarter-finals every year since 2008, is attempting to successfully defend a grand slam title for the first time.

"Hopefully I'm able to deal with things better this time round," said Murray, who won his first grand slam title at the U.S. Open in 2012.

"Once you get out there, I don't feel like I'm coming in trying to defend something. I'm going out there trying to win Wimbledon again. I want to try to win the competition."

This year the odds appear more stacked against him after a year disrupted by a series of minor problems including chest infections, elbow problems, flu and shingles.

However, the 30-year-old Briton said he was hopeful of being a force to reckon with at his home grand slam for years to come.

"You want to make the most of every tournament you play. I think you realize that a little bit more as you start to get older. I hope I'm still playing here for five, six, seven more years, if possible."

LONDON, England Britain's Johanna Konta says she is fit to play at the Wimbledon Championships after recovering from a heavy fall that forced her to pull out of a warm-up tournament.

Andy Murray winning Wimbledon fitness battle as draw shocks Bublik – ESPN

Andy Murray looked to be winning his fitness battle as he put in the hours on court at Wimbledon on Saturday.

The world No. 1 pulled out of two scheduled exhibition matches at the Hurlingham Club this week because of a sore hip and limped through practice on Friday.

He was still limping between points on Saturday but was in good spirits and hit the ball well during three practice sessions lasting more than three hours.

Asked how the hip was feeling, Murray said "It's okay," adding that he planned to play his opening match against Alexander Bublik on Monday.

As the defending champion, Murray has the honour of contesting the first match of the tournament on Centre Court. And on paper he could hardly have asked for a kinder draw against a lucky loser ranked 134 who has only ever won one grand slam match.

Bublik got his first taste of Centre Court on Saturday and said he would be nervous but the 20-year-old does not lack for confidence.

The Russian-turned-Kazakh is known for his trick shots, and said: "Why I am playing at this level is because my game is unpredictable. I don't even know what I'm going to do. I decide when the ball is coming."

Bublik thought his chance of a Wimbledon debut had gone with a heartbreaking loss in the final round of qualifying, when Daniel Brands won the deciding fifth set 12-10.

Bublik had not even considered the possibility of a lucky loser spot and was in Starbucks when he found out that not only had he got into the tournament, but that he would be playing Murray.

"I was so down," he said. "I was even crying. I'd never cried after matches. But that time I went somewhere in a forest, sitting there and I'm like, 'Okay, whatever'.

"Then I wake up in the morning, we go to Starbucks, grab a tea. My father texted me, like, 'Hi, you're playing Andy Murray.' I'm, like, 'Ha! Of course not. Are you kidding me?' And he's like, 'No, you're playing Andy.' And I'm, like, 'Nah.' And he's like, 'Take the draw.'

"And I open up the draw and I see my name next to Andy Murray and my phone just fell out of my hand and I'm, like, 'Nah, it can't be real. Can't be real.' I was calling my manager, and he was like, 'Nah, that's just a joke. Stop it.' And then when I realised, for 30 minutes my head was shaking.

"I never got a lucky loser in my life, absolutely never, juniors, whatever. I was actually I think the unluckiest guy on tour. I'm very excited to play the first event, to open up the stadium with Andy. It's going to be great."

Bublik will hope to continue an unwelcome 2017 trend for Murray, who has lost to both the previous lucky losers he has faced -- Borna Coric in Madrid and Jordan Thompson last week at Queen's Club.

Not that Bublik, who beat top-20 Frenchman Lucas Pouille in the first round of the Australian Open, has been keeping track of the world number one's form and fitness. He follows tennis only when his fellow young guns are competing and prefers watching basketball.

"Even Rafa and Fed, when you watch them they're putting everything in court and it's not interesting," said Bublik.

"It's interesting to see the highlights, how they're finishing the ball, but when they're rallying for, like, 45 shots, you're sitting there and you're feeling: 'Can I quit tennis please?' But I enjoy watching Nick [Kyrgios], for example. I like the way he's playing."

Bublik is also into music and is part of the rap scene in his home city of St Petersburg. He expects to have several Russian rappers in his Centre Court player box on Monday and has two quotes from Eminem tattooed on his right arm -- 'You won't break me, you just make me stronger than I was' and 'Always be a leader not a follower'.

Bublik said: "Someone asked him: 'Why are you not following anyone on Twitter?' He replied: 'Always be a leader not a follower.' But I'm following someone on Twitter, so that's not the right thing."

HEALTH AND FITNESS: Sport physiology in the Tour de France – Aiken Standard

This week marks the start of the 2017 Tour de France. This year the race covers 2,200 miles in 21 days of racing, comprised of team and individual time trials as well as stages through cities, countryside and mountains of France.

The Tour de France is interesting to me because it provides an excellent opportunity for a short lesson in sports physiology.

All of the riders in the Tour are exceptionally fit since their bodies have adapted to years of dedicated, intense training. Endurance sports like cycling are dependent on the delivery of oxygenated blood to the muscle to produce ATP, the energy needed to sustain exercise.

The riders have large, strong hearts, resulting in the ejection of more blood to the muscle. Within the muscle there is an increase in the number of capillaries, the small blood vessels that deliver blood to the muscle, and mitochondria, the part of the cell that produces most of the ATP. Together, these adaptations allow the muscle to produce more ATP without fatigue, allowing the athlete to exercise at a higher intensity for a longer time.

But training isnt the only reason these athletes can sustain such intense exercise for so long. Proper nutrition, especially what the athletes eat and drink before, during and after each stage, also plays an important role.

Intense endurance exercise like cycling relies on carbohydrates, in particular, muscle glycogen, as a fuel. Muscle glycogen is a storage form of glucose, sugar that the muscle converts into energy. During prolonged exercise that lasts several hours, muscle glycogen levels can be severely depleted.

Eating carbohydrates before exercise can boost muscle glycogen levels, so cyclists eat carbohydrate-rich foods for breakfast before each stage. They also consume carbohydrates in the form of sports drinks (think Gatorade) and energy bars prior to starting.

In fact, they start replenishing their muscle glycogen immediately after finishing the previous days ride. This usually begins with a recovery beverage, which may contain some protein for more rapid muscle glycogen synthesis, and extends through carbohydrate-rich meals and snacks that afternoon and evening.

During exercise it is crucial to maintain adequate blood glucose levels, which tend to drop since the muscle is using so much as a fuel. Failure to replenish blood glucose results in what cyclists call hitting the wall or bonking, which is like your car running out of gas. To prevent this, glucose must be replenished, typically with sports drinks, energy bars or a sugary mixture called goo.

Prolonged, intense exercise, especially in the heat, results in a high sweat rate, which can lead to dehydration. Sweat loss of several liters per hour is not uncommon during cycling, so fluid intake is essential. This means that cyclists spend a lot of time drinking water while they ride. Sports drinks are also commonly used since they contain carbohydrates and electrolytes in addition to water.

Endurance events like cycling, especially multi-stage events like the Tour de France, highlight important concepts of sports physiology. Even though you may never compete at that level, understanding how training can improve your endurance is relevant if you cycle or run, walk or swim for exercise.

Knowing how proper nutrition before, during and after exercise can improve performance can help you make better decision about what to eat. Hopefully, it also gives you a greater appreciation for the science that goes into a performance like the Tour de France.

Suffer from Arthritis? Study Seeks to Learn if Weight Loss and Exercise Help – Winston-Salem Journal

For older adults who suffer from knee pain caused by osteoarthritis, the future can look a bit bleak. But what if there was an opportunity to find relief, make some new friends and improve your lifestyle all by becoming part of a research study?

Wake Forest University will be conducting a study on knee osteoarthritis, otherwise known as OA, within a community setting, thanks to a federal grant, and they need willing participants. Curious? Here are 5 facts about the study to help you decide if its right for you.

1. The study has passionate and dedicated scientists rooting for it to work

Does 28 years sound like a long while? Thats the amount of time that Wake Forest professor Steve Messier and his colleagues have studied the topic of osteoarthritis and how diet and exercise can affect its severity.

According to Messier, OA is the leading cause of disability in older adults, with more than 250 million people suffering from it. Its safe to say the scientists behind these studies have your best interest at heart.

2. Wake Forest is bringing together a highly skilled and experienced team of scientists for the study

The National Institutes of Health have awarded this research team with the largest grant in the history of Wake Forest University, and the folks at Wake Forest are excited to share the process with a few other reputable institutions. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Brigham and Womens Hospital, Harvard University, East Carolina University and the University of Sydney in Australia are all planned as co-investigators in the study.

3. Unlike earlier studies, this one will be less controlled and more realistic

The latest study, which is known as WE-CAN, Weight Loss and Exercise for Communities with Arthritis in North Carolina will put the many years that Messier and his colleagues have worked on clinical study results into what they called a real-world setting. The study will have more variables than controls, since it will care for people with knee osteoarthritis in a community setting.

4. The results of WE-CAN could be a game-changer for those with OA

Doctors often treat OA with surgery or medicines and havent had a vehicle, as Messier puts it, to assist their patients with lifestyle changes, WE-CAN will be an ideal component to achieving success with exercise and diet.

The ultimate goal is to inspire communities to establish easily assessable common fitness spots, such as churches and community recreation centers, in both rural and urban areas in which physicians can direct their patients for long term treatment with exercise and diet that is cost-effective, an important component that could make it attractive to insurance companies.

5. If you suspect youre a candidate, you probably are

If participating in this new community study sounds appealing to you, theres a probability youre a candidate. Participants should be at least 50 years of age and overweight, with ongoing knee pain on most days. They will be grouped into two segments, with one as the diet and exercise group and one as the nutrition and health group. All in all, there is room for 820 adults (450 in Forsyth County) to take part in the study.

This study is significant in that it will test the effectiveness of a long-awaited and much needed community-based program, Messier says. It will serve as a blueprint for clinicians and public health officials in both urban and rural communities.

Myron B. Pitts: Bottom line is screenings for colon cancer can save your life – Fayetteville Observer

What did you do to get ready for the July Fourth weekend?

I had my first colonoscopy last Thursday.

Im a few years shy of when doctors typically recommend these should start. But I experienced a big weight loss in the spring, and there were other less-dramatic concerns. African Americans are also at higher risk for colorectal cancer, so yay, another great statistic we belong to.

I had my appointment with Cape Fear Center for Digestive Diseases, off Boone Trail. Theres a name that makes it plain, huh? Diseases. Makes you think theyre bound to find something in your body thatll depress all your friends on Facebook, or at least the ones who like you.

Why are there no medical clinics named The Center for Rainbows and Ice Cream or The Center for Its Probably Nothing But Lets Take A Look-See Shall We?

Dr. Sanjeev Slehria, gastroenterologist, was my guy. On my weight loss, he said with a smile he figured journalism could be stressful, but not stressful enough to lose that much weight.

He scheduled me for an endoscopy, too, to look at my G.I. tract.

Your colon has to be clear of all guests, both long-term and overnight stays, so on Wednesday, I started a liquid diet. Jell-O I now consider the ramen noodle of desserts you go through the motion of eating it and dont feel one iota more full. Its a trick. So is broth.

They prescribe you a liquid solution to make you go, and I duly went. And went.

Thursday morning, my wife and I checked in at the somewhat palatial Digestive Health Endoscopy Center, farther down Boone Trail. The waiting room had the usual one bathroom per gender. I figured theyd have more in that particular waiting room, because of why people were there. On the other hand, I was the only one waiting who used the bathroom.

I surrendered my eyeglasses and phone to my wife, doctors orders. She kept my wallet, too, but that was her idea.

Everyone was nice at the Endo Center. The kind of people thatd be fun to meet over lunch and not just over a saline drip.

In the procedure room, Slehria told me what would happen. Id lie on my left side. In lay terms, camera 1 would go down the throat, and afterward camera 2 would travel up from the business end. I vaguely remember talking about vehicles, possibly electric cars, just before endoscopy tech Donna Raye inserted a mouth guard, and no it wasnt just to shut me up. Jessica Colombo, a nurse trained in anesthesia, administered the happy stuff.

I was out in seconds.

In a blink, I was back in recovery, nurse Dale Hatfield got me water, and my wife was by my side.

Slehria brought in lovely, well-lit pictures of my esophagus, stomach and colon. All relevantfeatureswere color-coded and numbered. You havent lived until youve seen a close-up of your cecum. It was like that sci-fi book Fantastic Voyage. But without the tiny submarine. Or the miniaturization of human beings. Or the sense of danger. OK, maybe it was nothing like that book.

What it truly was was easy. People should not fear a colonoscopy.

Colon cancer often has no symptoms until later stages. So screenings are important.

My colon screening, by the way, seemed to indicate no concerns, said Slehria, with a few tests still to come in.

Later, he told me people should start screening for colon cancer and colon polyps at age 50. The gastroenterologist associations now agree African Americans should start at 45, he said.

If polyps are found early, you can prevent colon cancer, he says, adding that cancer found earlier is more treatable.

And that, as they say, is the bottom line.

Columnist Myron B. Pitts can be reached at pittsm@fayobserver.com or 910-486-3559.

Shoppers enjoy the variety of items at Rivertown Treasure Chest.

By Allen Payton

Another new store has opened in Antiochs historic, downtown Rivertown, incorporating the area in its name: Rivertown Treasure Chest. Its a co-op thats co-owned by three ladies, Debbie Blaisure, Toni Lincks and Earlene Lanter and a portion of the sale of some items will benefit three local non-profit organizations.

Blaisure and Lincks bring their retail experience from owning Oddly Unique, just down the street. But, this store was a result of a dream.

I had a dream of mixing the new and old in a co-op, Blaisure said. Johnny Depp came to me in a dream and said to have a treasure chest theme, she joked.

The tag line says it all Something for all ages from all decades, Blaisure added.

They rent out space in their store to other retailers, who offer a wide variety of items, including clothing, candy and other sweets, plants including carnivorous types, greeting cards, and gifts.

The three non-profits that the store benefits are Celebrate Antioch Foundation which runs Antiochs July 4th Celebration and the Holiday Delites in December; An Elderly Wish Foundation which grants wishes to seniors; and Special Haven, also located on G Street, which provides a multi-sensory environment for the benefit and development of children and adults with Special Needs.

Folks can donate their used wood furniture, art, statures, vases and vinyl records and half of the proceeds from the sale of the item will be donated to the charity of the donors choice.

Two of the ladies who help manage the store, Naomi Paul and Mary Freeman said the reason they like the store, is it brings something that downtown Antioch deserves.

A little kid just bought something and an adult bought something, Mary added, supporting the slogan of something for all ages.

Americas favorite pastime is alive and well in Eastern Contra Costa County. The Pittsburg Diamonds have played at City Park since 2014, and this week welcomed back to the Bay Area, former Major League slugger Jose Canseco, as he spent the weekend of June 23rd with the independent professional baseball team.

Canseco is best known for his tenure with the Oakland Athletics from 1982-1992, where nailed 209 homeruns and 647 RBIs. He and Athletics first baseman Mark McGwire formed the Bash Brothers. Along with that, he captured a World Series ring in the 1989 Battle of the Bay that was overshadowed by the infamous Loma Prieta Earthquake.

Canseco is no stranger to the city of Pittsburg, as this is his third year suiting up for the Diamonds. He states that his favorite part of being back in the East Bay is being able to be around the young players the Diamonds house.

I try to help them out with all aspects of the game, Canseco said. A lot of players actually recommend coming out to Pittsburg to play so Im really excited for this weekend.

The Diamonds have been part of the Pacific Association of Professional Baseball Clubs since their inaugural season in 2014 when they were named the Pittsburg Mettle. In 2015 when ownership switched to hands of Khurram Shah, they commenced under the Diamonds brand paying homage to the team that played in the same area back in the 60s.

Shah wants everyone to be aware that Pittsburg is home to a minor league baseball team. Even if he brings Canseco out for a couple games, he hopes to generate life-long fans after this unique experience.

Were trying to build a fan base, Shah said. We want to see a repeat of people coming to ballpark consistently.

Pittsburg took two out of the three game series against the Vallejo Admirals during Cansecos weekend with the team, where the Diamonds improved to 11-9 on the season.

Shah highlights infielder Vinny Guglietti to be one of the top guys on the team. The Connecticut native is batting .420 with five homeruns and 27 RBIs. Wes Wallace is another player that makes a huge impact according to Shah as he is hitting .364 and five homeruns. Shah states Tyler Stirewalt is starting to showcase his pitching ability. Stirewalt has 1.92 ERA so far, this season.

The Diamondsnext home game is Tuesday night, June 27 at 6:30 p.m., to begin another three-game series also against the Admirals. To learn more about the Diamonds visit http://www.diamondsproball.com.
