Over 50 But Not Over the Hill A Diet and Exercise Plan for People 50 and Over – PJ Media

I love to read inspiring stories about people who completely disregard what others see as a handicap, like Ernestine Shepherd. This lady started weightlifting at age 56! She is currently 80 years old and still competes as a bodybuilder! When most people start thinking of slowing down, she just started to hit her stride. Here's a quick little video about her:

Or take a look at the dad of FightTips coach Shane Fazen. Watch Mr. Fazen just kill it at the gym ... at the ripe old age of 55.

And who can forget the incomparable Jack Lalanne? Here is a great video showing him swimming on his 70th birthday pulling 70 boats in tow! He passed away at 96, but how many people in their 40s or 50s don't have the health of Jack Lalanne when he was 90? People like Lalanne and many others prove that age is just a number, and you don't have to listen to what other people think is a handicap.

I was a couch potato when I was in my 20s and 30s. But then my father died suddenly. I simply could not work through my grief, so my wife suggested that I take up running (she was already a power runner). It was quite the struggle to start walking, then jogging, then running.

But after about a month of doing this three days a week, I was hooked! (And, although I miss my father every single day, my exercise has been therapy and has helped me achieve "a sense of balance" whenever I think of him.) For the next 14 years I would run two or three miles three days a week. It was a good addiction that later saved my life.

In 2012, I found out that I had five almost complete blockages in my heart. (You can read the whole story here.) My doctors told me that I had a genetic problem the condition was not due to abusing my body. They also said that my running had so strengthened my heart that I was living on only 15 percent of its usage, and I did not even know it until almost the very end.

Exercise had kept me alive. When I came out of surgery I asked my surgeon, "What do I do to NEVER wind up with something like this again?" He told me "First, take your meds." (Check. That's easy.) "Next, eat right." (No problem, I've been a health food nut for almost 30 years.) "Lastly, exercise like a mad man." (Got it. I can do that.)

The best fitness trackers of 2017 – Telegraph.co.uk

Fitness trackers have become a popular way to stay active with the success of wareable devices from Fitbit, Garmin and the popularity of the Apple Watch encouraging people tokeep tabs on their health.

And the devices are still improving, offering functions including sleep tracking, heart rate monitoringand different exercises. There have been some questions over their accuracy, but many offer a path to a more active lifestyle.

Smartwatches have also come into the same market as many fitness trackers and there is some overlap, making the choice between them harder. If you are interested in a smartwatch you can see our full list of the best smartwatches for 2017.

Fitness trackers are a great way to stay fit and active and can monitor users daily step count, sleep, heart rate and activity levels.

Not all fitness trackers are like wristwatches and many come in the form of small, lightweight bands like the Fitbit Alta HR, or can be attached to your ankle like the Moov Now. Others are simple dongles that can be clipped onto items of clothing.

Most are also unlike smartwatches and are not made to support multiple apps, although they do share some similar functions and the line is blurred, as more smartwatches gear themselves towards health tracking. Fitbit produce their own sports watch, the Fitbit Blaze, while the Apple Watch is a powerful fitness tracker in its own right.

LA Fitness in Hunters Creek tests positive for Legionella | WFTV – WFTV Orlando

by: WFTV Web Staff, Cierra Putman Updated: Jun 27, 2017 - 7:07 PM

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. - At least one of the Central Florida LA Fitness gyms the state health department linked to four cases of Legionnaires disease tested positive for Legionella bacteria.

The Orange County Health Department reported that multiple samples from the LA Fitness at Hunters Creek came back positive.

Officials are still waiting to get the results from the LA Fitness in Metro West.

Legionella can cause two illnesses, including Legionnaires' disease, which is a rare but serious form of pneumonia.

People can get sick when they come in contact with contaminated water particles.

LA Fitness member Laura Castillo said she didnt use the spa or showers after learning the health department linked her gym to the disease.

I kind of freaked out, but this has always been pretty clean, she said. I just want them to take every precaution they can to prevent this from happening again.

WATCH: 9 facts about Legionnaires' Disease

Kent Donahue, with the Orange County Department of Health, said the agency does not require the facility to shut down completely.

Our epidemology staff has recommended to the LA Fitness in Hunters Creek to work with a water company to address the possible issues they have there, he said.

LA Fitness reports it ensured the showers and the pool were closed off to guests before the positive results came back.

A water treatment company has deep cleaned the spa and shower areas.

Earlier this year, three members of the LA Fitness in Ocoee were sickened by Legionnaires disease, but test results came back negative for the Legionella bacteria.

In Orange County, LA Fitness gyms were also linked to the disease in 2008 and 2010.

YMCA offers free programs in the Park – Kokomo Perspective

In an initiative to get into the community and help Howard County get active, the Kokomo Family YMCA has unveiled a seven-week workout program.

We were looking for ways to get into the community and to get people engaged in a healthier lifestyle, said Director of Healthy Living China Antoine. While accomplishing those two things, we also wanted to create an environment where people werent intimidated by coming into a health facility.

The program, Workout Wednesday, was unveiled June 7 in Foster Park with a one-hour yoga session led by yoga instructor Debbie Baker. The crowd of yoga participants peaked at 50 attendees.

We had a fantastic instructor, Debbie Baker, who did a great job of accommodating everyone who attended the first class, especially those who had never done yoga before, said Antoine. We even had a father attend because his two daughters wanted to go, and the girls ended up going off to play. The dad stayed to finish the session.

Over the course of the seven weeks from June through August the classes offered and instructors teaching will vary. This program will feature many of the YMCAs most-visited classes, such as Yoga, Bootcamp Ripped, Refit, Zumba, and High Intensity Interval Training.

Its not the same thing every Wednesday. You get a little taste of everything we do at the Y, and this is a great time to take advantage of that for free, said Antoine.

The classes are provided free of charge with the convenience of everything needed to workout at the disposal of those who are partaking in the class. Culligan of Kokomo provides free water, GNC Live Well provides pre- and post-workout supplements, and the Greater Kokomo Chamber of Commerce provides sunscreen all free of charge.

We wanted to take care of as many hassles as possible, said Antoine. That way people arent worried about having the right stuff or being unprepared. On our first session, a lot of people didnt have yoga mats, and we had plenty to accommodate those who needed one.

Coming up, the next Workout Wednesday class will be offered June 28 from 6 to 7 p.m. Attendees will participate in the Refit class. Similar to Zumba, Refit entails a good amount of dance moves but with more of a focus on the actual exercise.

There is a lot of specific squatting and lunging that focuses more on the actual toning of muscles, rather than the cardio workout that Zumba provides. Its a unique class that a lot of people dont really know about. Its a great hybrid class for those who arent very comfortable with all of the dancing required in Zumba because everyone knows how to lunge or squat, said Antoine.

For Antoine and her Healthy Living associates, she wanted the citizens of Howard County to know this class is truly for everyone.

If there is any hesitancy about joining the classes, take the time to come out and just watch the first time and see what it is like. We dont want this to be a miserable time for anyone participating. As Howard County being one of the lower counties on the health index in Indiana, we want our community members to take advantage of something like this and take that first step, said Antoine.

For more information on Workout Wednesdays and the slated dates and programs visit, http://www.Kokomoymca.org/event/workout-wednesday.

LDS Church employees receive paid maternity leave, new dress code – Daily Herald

A handful of major announcements for employees of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were made Wednesday in a memo distributed to church employees.

The LDS Church, which is the largest employer in Utah, made five major health and wellness changes for its employees in an effort to align its policies and benefits with other national businesses.

Church employees, including employees at Brigham Young University and other church-owned colleges, will now receive six weeks of paid maternity leave to recover from childbirth. Employees also now have one week of paid parental leave, which new mothers may stack on top of their maternity leave.

Additionally, major changes are coming to church employees dress codes. Women who were previously confined to skirts and dresses in their dress code may now wear pantsuits and dress slacks. Men can now wear light-colored dress shirts as opposed to white shirts 24/7.

Men may also now remove their suit jackets when the weather is too hot.

The dress code changes do not apply to church-sponsored schools like BYU, where the dress codes were less restrictive than at the Church Office Building or on Temple Square.

For church employees working on Temple Square, including in the Church Office Building, a new wellness center will be opened in October 2017 on the seventh floor of the Church Office Building. It will include cardio and weightlifting equipment, group fitness studios and exercise classes.

Wellness programs will also be available for all full-time employees, whether they work at Temple Square or not.

In late December 2017, full-time employees will have the peace of mind of a short-term disability plan.

According to the memo, after seven days of being ill, injured or otherwise disabled, employees can receive two-thirds of their salary from day eight to day 45.

More information on the short-term disability plan will be available to employees during open enrollment in October.

Researchers say we have three years to act on climate change before it’s too late – Popular Science

If you want to lose 10 pounds by a certain date there are, broadly speaking, two ways of going about it. You could take it slow and steady, cutting down slightly on your daily caloric intake to achieve a modest weekly weight loss, making your way to your goal weight over the course of a month or two. Or you could wait until a week or two before your target date and then give up as much food as possible, triple up on the exercise, and hope that youll lose weight fast enoughwithout literally killing yourself in the process.

Only the most imprudent among us would consciously choose the second option, right?

In this regard, stopping climate change is a lot like weight loss, according to a comment article published today in the journal Nature. The article, spearheaded by Christiana Figueres (architect of the process that lead to the Paris Climate Agreement and now vice-chair of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy), says that we only have three years to act if we want a smooth transition to a low-carbon economythe socio-economic equivalent of losing weight in a slow and steady manner.

We have until 2020, say the authorswho include a number of researchers, state and local government officials (including the governor of California), and heads of climate change focused organizationsbefore achieving the goals laid out in the Paris Climate Agreement become almost impossible. At that point, the actions that wed have to undertake would be drastic; the equivalent of crash dieting and hoping for the best.

2020 is a hard deadline. Theres no turning back if we dont bend the emissions curve within three years, says Sharan Burrow, The General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation and a signatory on the article. There are no jobs on a dead planet.

Unlike weight loss, which is in many ways still a bit of a mystery to science, we already know how to fix climate change. We just have to lower emissions something weve already started to do.

In 2016, according to the article, U.S. emissions fell 3 percent, even while the economy grew by 1.6 percent. In China, emissions fell 1 percent while the economy expanded by 6.7 percent. Curbing emissions is not an insurmountable task, and it's not going to destroy jobs.

We have finally realized that this is not an either-or situation, says Figueres. "We can create jobs, we can recreate communities that have lost jobs. We can improve the quality of life in urban and rural areas and precisely by doing what we can to improve climate change.

The authors created a six-point framework that outlines what we need to do by 2020. They call for increasing renewable energy to 30 percent of the global mix (above from the 23.7 percent it comprised in 2015). The article also calls for upgrading infrastructureslashing building energy use and turning 3 percent of building stock into either net-zero or near net-zero emissions. Other proposals include a doubling of mass transit, an increase in the percentage of electric car sales from 1 to 15 percent annually, cutting deforestation to zero, and reducing the emissions associated with heavy industries

Some of this is already happening. China has cancelled plans to build 103 coal fired plants, and Beijing has shuttered its last one, already leading to improved air quality in the city. The goal of the comment is to note whats already happening and encourage us to keep doing what were already doing; we just need to do it faster.

Despite the recent withdrawal of the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement, and the fact that the comment is seen as a reminder to heads of state heading into the G20 Summit happening this July, the analysis hinges on physics, not politics. If we want to meet the target of a global temperature increase of 1.5 degrees Celsius laid out in Paris, we can safely emit between 150 and 1,050 gigatons of carbon dioxideTOTALfor the foreseeable human future (think millennia).

That goal is meant to keep the Earth well below an average global temperature increase of 2 degrees, which would be catastrophic. The difference between half a degree Celsius (which is about .9 degrees Fahrenheit) doesnt seem like muchafter all, who among us can tell the difference between a 71.6 F day and a 72.5 F day? The issue, of course, is that were not talking weatherwere talking climate. A 1.5 degree Celsius increase will still hurt the planet (were already seeing these effects, as evidenced by the recent bleaching of the Great Barrier Reef) but avoiding the additional half a degree would mean sparing ourselves the worst of the warming, including an increase in sea level rise by an extra four inches and the complete destruction of the world's coral reefswhich a quarter of the planet depends on for food and livelihood.

But even if runaway warming isn't something you feel concerned about, there's good reason to cut down on fossil fuel use: eventually we're going to run out of them. Following gradual carbon cutting guidelines is just another way of planning for that eventuality.

Were already seeing climate devastation changing seasons, changing peoples livelihoods, and even their lives, says Sharan Burrows. We still have time to mitigate the worst effects of global warming in a way that preserves a world worth living in, and helps our economies grow. Whether or not governments will act quickly enough is another question entirely.
