Trees, saws, ladders don’t mix – Perry County Republic Monitor

In February 2016, a homeowner was seriously injured after falling from a ladder while trimming branches from a tree in Frederick, Okla.

The man was using a chain saw to trim broken limbs from the trees around his home. One of the limbs he severed fell into his ladder, knocking it over and causing the man to fall 12 feet to the ground.

The man was discovered by a neighbor, lying face down in the yard beneath the tree. The badly bent ladder and chain saw were strewn on the ground nearby.

He was taken by helicopter to OU Medical Center due to the nature of his injuries.

This story is, unfortunately, not an isolated incident says Tchukki Andersen, Board Certified Master Arborist, Certified Tree Safety Professional and staff arborist for the Tree Care Industry Association. There are many stories in the news media each year depicting the sad details of homeowners getting severely injured or killed by attempting to manage large tree limbs on their own.

Tree work, while appearing fairly straightforward and simple, is actually extremely complicated and technical. There is so much to understand about removing live or hanging tree branches, and it is not at all like cutting up firewood on the ground with a chain saw.

Qualified tree professionals are trained to look for and take special precautions against:

Trees or branches with decay, cracks or unbalanced weight

Working near overhead electrical wires and other conductors

Preventing falls from trees they are working in

Removing portions of or entire trees without causing bodily harm or property damage

Do-it-yourself homeowners have been hurt trying to cut their own trees in the following manners:

Extension Ladders

If your ladder is too short to reach the branch, do not make the mistake of setting it on something such as on overturned garbage can to get the reach you need.

Get a sturdy ladder that will reach at least 5 feet beyond the branch you lean it on.

When a large branch is cut from a tree, the loss of the weight will cause the rest of the limb to suddenly lurch up.

Many unaware homeowners have been severely injured, some fatally, when the ladder they are standing on falls out from under the branch they are cutting.

The biggest danger is taking too big or too unwieldy of a piece at one time. Cut the limb in small pieces.

Improper Tools

Are you going to borrow your brother-in-laws chain saw?

When was the last time that tool was properly sharpened or maintained?

A dull chain forces you to use too much pressure, causing you to lose control. This can lead to many problems, most of them leading to the hospital for emergency treatment of deep lacerations to your body.

Andersen notes, Use properly maintained equipment and the right size saw for the job.

Lack of knowledge

It cant be done with just one cut. This is where those lacking experience in cutting live limbs from trees get hurt almost every time.

Trees are mechanically complex organisms that need to be cut in a certain way to remove pieces of them safely.

Cutting off a large section of limb to save time will usually cause the branch to fall before the cut is finished. The cut end will often tear into the branch all the way back to the trunk.

This action can cause damage to the tree (and to you) as it swings out of control, usually onto the ladder you are standing on or the person holding the ladder.

Therefore, it is always recommended to remove a large limb in sections.

If you are at all uncertain about what could happen by attempting your own tree work, contact a qualified tree care professional.

Find a Professional

A professional arborist can assess your landscape and work with you to determine the best care for your trees.

Contact the Tree Care Industry Association, a public and professional resource on trees and arboriculture since 1938.

TCIA has more than 2,300 member tree care firms and affiliated companies who recognize stringent safety and performance standards and who are required to carry liability insurance.

TCIA also has the nations only Accreditation program that helps consumers find tree care companies that have been inspected and accredited based on: adherence to industry standards for quality and safety; maintenance of trained, professional staff; and dedication to ethics and quality in business practices. Non-Diet Your Way to Health with These Apps – HuffPost

Technology is finally catching up to what I have instinctively known - dieting doesnt work. Ive always been one of those naturally thin people who never diets, eats what I want and has a lot of yo-yo dieters scratching their heads in disbelief and irritation. Why? Because since my teenage years and into my forties, I have always known that diets dont work and deprivation is definitely not for me.

What I do know is that a balanced life filled with lots of nourishing foods and an active lifestyle does work; it works forever, not just for a few weeks or months. Ive been an amused spectator as more diet fads than I can count have come, and then gone the way of the Macarena (circa 1996 in case you missed it). Sugar Busters, The Zone, Atkins, The Cabbage Soup Diet, the All Fruit Diet, the No Fat Diet the list is endless.

Finally, there are apps that agree with me. They have been hailed Next Gen weight loss apps, because they thumb their nose at traditional dieting. They tout the philosophy that health and fitness are not about food, but are actually about wait for it mood, and that a little education and self-awareness goes a long way.

Why do we eat? When do we eat? How do we eat? Here are some great apps that can help you to answer these questions for yourself and get you on the right track towards lasting lifestyle changes.

We eat when were hungry; thats a no brainer. But we also eat when we are stressed, scared, depressed, anxious, celebrating, craving a particular taste we eat for a lot of reasons. I recently read an article about a new app called goEvo (as in go Evolve) that is about to hit the app store this fall. goEvo app claims to track your moods and how each mood correlates with your eating habits. For example: Do you always reach for that bag of potato chips when you get bad news? Do you tend to drink too many glasses of wine when you are feeling celebratory? Does a burger and fries hit the spot during that time of the month (ladies)? Do you have to have your spicy wings and beer when youre watching a Football game with the guys? We all have emotional cues connected to food. Sometimes they serve us and sometimes they dont.

According to goEvo, the app enables you to actually connect with experts in different areas of health and wellness, in real time, in order to identify your craving triggers and redirect your emotions and the ensuing behaviors you might live to regret. The concept is based on an artificial intelligence model. You can have a text conversation in real time with a psychologist that answers you back with appropriate replies and offers viable solutions stored in the app that are based on research. goEvo aims to teach users how to identify their moods and their corresponding food cravings, finding healthier solutions and redirecting behavior in the moment. It also introduces users to fun play-like fitness routines, balanced meal ideas, delicious recipes and other helpful tips.

Theyre even putting their money where their mouth is, offering a free NutriBullet blender and helpful healthy living books as a prize package to one lucky potential user of this upcoming iOS app. To be entered to win, sign up for their mailing list at goevoapp.com.

A friend recently introduced me to the Fooducate Nutrition Scanner app, which is available on both iOS and Android. And Fooducate is exactly what is sounds like. Using their website or mobile app will educate you about the nutritional value, caloric count and composition of just about any food you can think of. Unlike traditional calorie counting, Fooducate shows you the calories versus nutritional value so you can determine the quality of the foods you put into your body throughout the day.

Want to know how much calcium, iron, protein and vitamins are in your favorite foods? Look it up on this app and get the real deal breakdown. Then calculate how to meet your nutritional needs throughout the day. Essentially, the concept is spend less calories and buy more nutrition. Learn how to get more bang for your buck, so-to-speak. The app also tallies how each food rates and gives it a grade, as in A, B, C. Example: I just looked up watermelon, one of my favorite snacks. Bonus for me; it scores an A on the Fooducate scale with a naturally high vitamin C quotient, minimal processing, 240 IUs of vitamin A and 60 mg of iron. Hersheys Milk Chocolate Bar, another personal favorite, didnt score so well at C-. With 8mg of saturated fat, 10 mg of cholesterol and the only real nutritional value being that of 80 mg of calcium and 3 mg of protein, at 210 calories thats a lot to spend with little nutritional pay off making it a once-in a-while treat.

While some of these findings might seem obvious, its important to get the details on what we eat so we can make more educated and empowered choices. Looking to eat healthier but running out of ideas? This app is community-centered with users sharing some of their favorite healthy recipes, so youll never again be at a loss for what to prepare. The best part is, they advocate for real food and real meals; no gimmicks or fads need apply.

Billing themselves as an app whose mission is to create products that help people live healthier lives, Noom completely omits the terms diet or weight loss from its mission statement. Noom offers courses that help you reboot your lifestyle and how you approach health and fitness, along with helping you understand and conquer unproductive habits that have held you back. They denounce yo-yo dieting and deprivation. Noom focuses on building a better version of you through coaching that addresses: cravings, habits, motivation (or lack thereof) and other self-sabotaging behaviors and beliefs that are keeping you from your long term health goals.

Were all different after all, with unique habits, triggers, inclinations and goals, so it stands to reason that Noom assesses who you are and puts together a personalized course just for you. You will get matched with a personal goal specialist and professional health coach. After analyzing your health pitfalls and your health and weight loss goals and thumbing through its database of resources, your personal plan is put together. Fun fact after taking their assessment quiz: I found out that my BMI is 23.0 but that it can improve with a goal of 21.6. Begin with a free 14 day trial to see how the program works for you and then go from there.

Ever heard the buzz phrase the world is your gym.? Me neither until I stumbled upon Human.co. This free app, available on both iOS and Android ups your creativity quotient when it comes to finding opportunities to get active. Can you commit to 30 minutes of movement a day? Then the Human app might be for you. This popular app with more than 1 million downloads doesnt apply any pressure or encourage unrealistic high impact workouts. Download Human onto your smartphone and the app will track your physical activity level as you go about your regular daily routine, making suggestions for opportunities along the way to move and sweat.

Looking for a friendly reminder to get moving for at least 30 minutes a day? Human apps got your back. Curious about how people get in their 30 minutes of activity around the globe? Check out Humans City Stats page to see whos biking, whos hiking, running or taking a walk, and be inspired while youre at it. Example: Parisians are leading the pack today with an average of 20 minutes more physical activity than in most other cities. Oakland, California and Raleigh, North Carolina Human users were in the lead yesterday with the most physical activity tracked with the Human app. How do you stack up? Download Human and find out.

If dieting and daily gym routines are your thing, more power to you. But if you are like most people aka an over scheduled multi-tasker who tends to eat the wrong things when hurried or stressed, and just wants to put your feet up at the end of a hectic day and binge watch your favorite Netflix shows, then fear not. Next Gen health and fitness apps are here to help.

Does The Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) Help Digestive Disorders? – Care2.com

The Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) is a diet often used by people suffering from digestive disorders.

But does it really help to improve gut health?

This article explains SCD and looks at the evidence behind it.

What is the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)?

The Specific Carbohydrate Diet is a diet plan designed to help address inflammatory digestive disorders. This includes diseases and conditions like ulcerative colitis (UC), Crohns disease, diverticulitis, and celiac disease.

The diet became popular from the 1994 book Breaking the Vicious Cycle: Intestinal Health Through Diet, by biochemist Elaine Gottschall. Itwas based on a few celiac and food intolerance theories from the past century combined with Elaines experience treating her daughters UC.

Its called the Specific Carbohydrate Diet because only certain carbohydrates called monosaccharides, or simple sugars, are allowed. Larger carbohydrate molecules like di-, oligo-, and polysaccharides are excluded.

Foods containing fats and proteins are not impacted.

Summary: The Specific Carbohydrate Dietwas designed for those suffering from inflammatory digestive disorders. The only carbohydrates allowed on the diet are monosaccharides.

How Does SCDHelp?

The purpose of the Specific Carbohydrate Dietis to reduce inflammation in the digestive tract.

Its also said to improve the balance of bacteria in the gut by providing the body with nutrient-rich and easily digestible foods.

These are the main (theoretical) benefits in more detail:

Addressing bacterial overgrowth

Inflammatory digestive disorders harm the gut lining, which is where digestion and absorption occurs.

The result is that the body doesnt properly breakdown foods, particularly carbohydrates. Bacteria in the gut then interact (ferment) these poorly digested carbohydrates, producing waste products that irritate and damage the gut.

A vicious cycle forms where bacterial fermentation causes damage, which then worsens digestive and absorptive abilities. The SCD removes poorly digested carbohydrates (i.e. any carbohydrate that is not a monosaccharide) from the diet to improve bacterial overgrowth.

Addressing leaky gut

The lining of a healthy gut is tightly regulated to prevent absorption of harmful substances into the body.

When regulation becomes lax, which is present in inflammatory digestive disorders, larger and potentially harmful substances can pass through (1).

This is known as increased intestinal permeability, or Leaky Gut. The SCD aims to heal the gut lining, thereby improving leaky gut.

Addressing poor absorption

Digestive enzymes are released from cells in the gut lining in the presence of food to help with digestion.

When the gut is damaged, there may be inadequate release of enzymes. Additionally, the gut lining releases more mucus to help protect itself. Excess mucus blocks enzymes from interacting with food.

Because the SCD only allows monosaccharides, digestive enzymes are not required for digestion and absorption since this type of simple sugar cannot break down into smaller parts.

Summary: The SCD may improve digestive disorders by healing the gut lining, reducing bacterial overgrowth, and improving nutrient absorption. It does this by removing carbohydrates that are more difficult to digest.

What Does The Research Say?

Research on SCD is in its infancy, but there have been studies looking at specific health conditions.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

Research on SCD and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is emerging.

In a small retrospective study of 7 children with Crohns disease, subjects followed the SCD without the use of any medications for 5 to 30 months.

All symptoms and lab markers were significantly improved at their 3-month clinic checkup. Similar study designs showed these same promising results (2, 3, 4, 5).

Following on from that, a prospective 12-week study in 12 pediatric IBD patients following the SCD produced notable symptom and lab improvements. Researchers also found significant changes in the microbiome via stool testing (6).

Additionally, a case study series of 50 IBD patients following the SCD for over 2 years showed it was 91.3% effective in controlling acute flare symptoms and 92.1% effective at maintaining remission (7).

Lastly, adults with IBD have a strong perceived benefit when following the SCD based on results from 417 respondents of an anonymous online survey (8).

Overall, current scientific evidence is promising but in its early stages for IBD.More research is necessary to confirm these findings in both childrenand adults.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

There are some similarities between SCD and the commonly recommended low FODMAP dietfor managing food intolerance.

However, there is no research on using SCD specifically for treatingIBS.

There is also a diet that combines SCD with the low FODMAP diet, which was designed for patients with small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).

While this combination diet could theoretically help improve SIBO, there are no studies supporting its use.

Healthy people

No research indicates SCD would be useful for generally healthy people.

Its highly restrictive and unnecessary for the vast majority of the population to follow.

Summary:The SCD could be useful for IBD, but there is not enough evidence to recommend it as the first option. There is no research on theSCD for those IBS or the general healthy public.

SCD Food List

The SCD uses the terms legal and illegal to help followers understand what to eat.

Legal foods include:

Illegal foods include:

SCD Introduction Phase

Prior to starting the diet, consider following the introduction phase for about 5 days or until diarrhea subsides.

SCD Introduction Instructions:

Summary: The SCD allows many healthy, unprocessed foods including proteins, fresh fruits/vegetables, nuts, and some dairy. It avoids most processed foods, especially those that contain starches, sugars and preservatives.

Sample SCD Meal Plan

While changing the diet is not easy, there are many simple and delicious foods when following the SCD.

Here is an example of foods you could choose on an SCD meal plan.

Breakfast (options):

Lunch (options):

Dinner (options):

Snacks (options):

Who Should Try the SCD and Is It Safe?

The SCD could be useful forIBD and celiac disease.

However, those who suffer from functional digestive disorders such as Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), chronic constipation, and chronic bloating should not try this as it has not been studied in these populations.

Also note that the SCD is a very restrictive eating plan that can cause more issues if not properly guided. For example, it may cause social isolation, food fear, weight loss, and nutrient deficiencies.

Therefore, its important to talk to your doctor or dietitian to find out if this plan is best suited for you.

Summary: The SCD is appropriate to try for those with inflammatory digestive disorders, but should be approached with caution and under professional supervision. It is not appropriate for all digestive conditions.

Summary: Does The Specific Carbohydrate Diet Work?

The Specific Carbohydrate Dietis an approach that may help those with inflammatory digestive disorders, such as IBD.

Research on the SCD andIBD is in its early stages, but results so far arepromising.

Just note there is no evidence its useful for those with IBS or those who are generally healthy.

Remember to always speak with your healthcare provider before making any serious diet changes.

LA Fitness club tests positive for Legionnaires’ bacteria – Orlando Sentinel

An LA Fitness club near the Hunters Creek neighborhood tested positive for the bacteria that causes Legionnaires disease while state health investigators await results from another club location.

The two LA Fitness clubs in the area have been under investigation since May by Florida Department of Health officials in Orange County after four separate cases of Legionnaires were traced back to the two gyms.

The club that tested positive is at 12700 S. Orange Blossom Trail, about 12 miles south of downtown Orlando.

Epidemiologists are still waiting for results from water tests taken at the LA Fitness in Metro West; those could be back within the week, said Kent Donahue, a spokesman for the Florida Department of Health in Orange County.

The samples were taken at several spots in the Hunters Creek gym, before the hyperchlorination of the spa and the install of point-of-use filters on the showers, Donahue said in an email.

Health officials were not able to provide the status of the four people that contracted Legionnaires.

Two customers at each facility were diagnosed with Legionnaires disease, a severe form of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria, which usually grows in closed water systems. The bacteria can be especially harmful to people with compromised respiratory systems and the elderly.

The bacteria grows in the water pipes at large buildings and then is expelled and turned into mist when devices such as showers and spas are turned on.

LA Fitness sent warnings to customers of the two clubs earlier this month warning about the possible contamination. LA Fitness has not responded to a request for comment about the positive test.

Reports of Legionnaires disease and Legionella bacteria happen more frequently in enclosed water systems, such as hot tubs, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC reports that there were about 6,000 cases of Legionnaires diseases reported in 2015 in the United States.

LA Fitness has been involved in two other Legionnaires investigations in Orange County in the last decade, including in 2008 at a club on Michigan Street in Orlando and in 2010 at an LA Fitness in the Waterford Lakes area.

However, health clubs are not a common source of Legionnaires disease, said Laura Cooley, a medical epidemiologist for the CDC.

State health officials recommended that LA Fitness consult with a water management company to address the issues.

Earlier this month a spokeswoman for LA Fitness said the company has hired water treatment firm Nalco Company to help take care of any problems.

Investigators in Lake County are also looking into three cases of Legionnaires disease tied to the hot tub at a senior living community in Clermont. Results from that test were not yet available.

I Tried A Diet And Fitness Plan Based On My DNA And Couldn’t Believe The Results – BuzzFeed News

1. My suspicion was correct. Genetically, I do have a slower metabolism. Dr. Dan described this in scientific terms as an "efficient metabolism," meaning that I store energy more than someone with a fast or "inefficient metabolism."

2. I also have a gene variation for the FTO gene that is linked to a hormone called ghrelin, which controls hunger. My gene variation implies that I am someone who becomes hungry very easily, therefore creating a higher risk of overeating. Dan said that eating small frequent meals throughout the day to control hunger would be important.

3. I also have a gene variation in the APOA2 gene, indicating that I am sensitive to saturated fats, meaning that it sticks to me more easily! I asked Dr. Dan what foods have saturated fats and he said things like animal products, butter, dairy products, palm oil and coconut oil. Coconut oil?! I ate so much coconut oil because of how often it's promoted as a healthy oil. No wonder I was having trouble.

4. I am someone who would benefit from working out later in the day because my CLOCK gene variations imply that I am a night owl. This made perfect sense because I am definitely not a morning person.

5. I am someone who responds well to "high volume training," meaning high sets and reps of weight training. I always thought that lots of cardio would be the key to losing weight. It turns out that it was going to take a lot of strength training. Dan said that the more muscle I built, the more fat I would burn.

6. I am someone who does not switch from burning carbohydrates to burning fat easily. This would mean that I would need to be eating the right balance of macronutrients: Carbs, protein and fat.

7. Dan also said that I have a gene variation that indicates I metabolize caffeine slowly. This means that I would benefit by having a cup of green tea about 30 minutes prior to a workout for optimal energy.

Joshua Newman, a Fitness Entrepreneur, Sentenced to 41 Months in Prison – New York Times

Josh acknowledged he came from privilege and he blew it, said Michael Stolper, the lawyer who represents 11 investors. I think justice was served.

Mr. Newmans business failures and allegations that he had failed to repay debts to investors were first reported by The New York Times in May 2015. He is scheduled to report to prison on Aug. 28.

Although todays sentence disappoints us, we have complete faith that Josh shall return to society as a true asset to his community, said Priya Chaudhry, a lawyer who represented Mr. Newman along with Eric Kanefsky. Josh is lucky to have many gifts, including resilience.

Mr. Newman intends to repay his victims and has accepted full responsibility for his actions, Ms. Chaudhry said.

Raised in Silicon Valley, Mr. Newman graduated from Palo Alto High School in 1997, just as the first internet start-up boom was taking hold. At Yale, Mr. Newman majored in cognitive science, a field that combines elements of computer science, neuroscience and psychology. By his junior year, Mr. Newman has said, he was a managing partner in the Silicon Ivy Venture Fund, which provided seed money to start-ups backed by college students.

Even before he graduated, Mr. Newman was featured in an April 2000 article in The Wall Street Journal about dorm room venture capitalists. He seemed to have a bright future, but things went wrong when a small film production company he had started, Cyan Pictures, ran into financial trouble and accumulated big debts that would dog Mr. Newman for years.

He then tried his hand at CrossFit, an intensive workout regimen, and became an outspoken devotee. He was a founder of a large, independently owned CrossFit center in Manhattan.

But Mr. Newman got in trouble when he began raising money to finance another CrossFit center. Federal prosecutors contend much of the money he raised for that venture and others went either to his personal use or to the investors in his failed movie production company.

Mr. Newman is not affiliated with CrossFit Inc., a fitness consulting firm based in Washington. Centers using the CrossFit brand name are independently run.

Even after he pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud in March 2016, Mr. Newman continued to posit himself as an entrepreneur. He created a website for a new fitness and training program called Composite Fitness.

And he continued to post messages on his blog. His last message was posted on Monday under the headline: Penance.

The brief post was a quotation from Joseph J. Ellis, the American historian and writer: And the only thing to do with a sin is to confess, do penance and then, after some kind of decent interval, ask for forgiveness.

A little exercise goes a long way, especially in seniors – Bel Marra Health

Home General Health Senior Health A little exercise goes a long way, especially in seniors

The word exercise often induces images of sweat and labored breathing, discouraging many people. Exercising on a regular basis helps us stay healthy and maintain our weight when combined with a balanced diet. Despite knowing this, many people go without regular exercise.

This is very apparent in the senior population, where dependent behavior is actually encouraged. Perhaps it is due to their perceived frailty. But according to new research, this perception may be doing our elderly a great disservice.

Home care aides provide seniors and older adults with services and personal care to individuals that can no longer take care of themselves. While making sure they dont overexert themselves is of great importance, a study was done to see if using this method of senior care was best for their overall health.

The study investigated homebound seniors taking part in three low-risk, gentle exercises as part of a program called Healthy Moves for Aging Well. These included a seated step-in-place, arm curls, and an ankle point-and-flex. All exercises were guided by at home aides, making sure that participants were performing the exercises safely. Encouragement was also given to the older adults to complete exercises on a daily basis, and they were frequently reminded of their health goals.

A total of 54 subjects took part in the study, ranging in age from 63 to 101. For a total of four months, seniors were asked to perform these at-home exercises.

The researchers saw significant improvement in the participants ability to perform basic activities such as getting to the toilet, pouring a drink from a carton, preparing meals, and doing laundry.

He continued, few physical activity programs targetolder adultswho have difficulty with basic activities, such as standing and walking. Programs that do so effectivelythrough physical or occupational therapy, for exampleare often too expensive for wide dissemination among this group of people.

Overall function and health outcomes saw an improvement, and satisfaction with the program ranked high with 98% of participants.

The researchers are quite happy with the outcome of this study. They want to get more home care aids to develop and become involved in a sustainable health promotion program such as this.

Provided photo The Gene Swimmins trading card, which is available for Mainstreet Piqua supporters who adopt a quack pack of ducks for the upcoming Rockin River Duck Drop.

PIQUA What do collectible trading cards and ducks have in common? Well, for Mainstreet Piqua supporters who adopt a quack pack of ducks for the upcoming Rockin River Duck Drop, they will be treated to a specifically designed Rockin River Duck Drop Trading Card.

The trading cards were the idea of the Rockin River Duck Drop committee members. The ducky artwork on each card was created by local illustrator Aaron Lindeman, and the layout and design of the cards were done by Robin Heintz, committee member and communications specialist at the Piqua Public Library.

We always tell our supporters that, after their duck has been adopted, it is put into a rigorous duck training program. These trading cards show just a few elements of that training program, Lisa Whitaker, chair of the duck drop committee, said. The trading cards are just a fun way to add additional interest and a new dimension to the event. Its such a quirky event; we decided to have a little fun with it. We think our supporters will get a big kick out of them.

In all, there are 10 different trading cards featuring ducks doing various exercise programs including canoeing, boxing, roller skating, running, and yoga among others. The names of the duck characters are all appropriate for their sport, including Ducky Balboa for the boxing duck and Paddles McGee for the canoeing duck. There is even a Gene Swimmins card for the guitar playing duck!

Each week a picture of the trading cards will be posted on the Rockin River Duck Drop Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/piquaduckdrop, and those interested in collecting the cards can stop by the Mainstreet Piqua office or the information booth at the Piqua Community Farmer market to pick up that weeks card. A trading card will also be included in any quack pack adoption.

The Rockin River Duck Drop is in its third year and is a major fundraiser for Mainstreet Piqua. The funds raised by the Duck Drop event are used to support Mainstreet Piquas mission of celebrating and promoting downtown Piqua. Duck adoption forms are available at the Mainstreet Piqua office, Koverman Staley Dickerson Insurance, Apple Tree Gallery, Readmores Hallmark, The Tapestry Angel, Unity National Bank and the Miami Valley Centre Mall. They can also be adopted online at http://www.mainstreetpiqua.com. A single duck adoption is $5, a quack pack is available for $25 (six ducks) and a grand quack is $100 for 25 ducks. The duck drop will be held on Saturday, Aug. 19, at 6 p.m. at Lock 9 Park.

Sponsors for the Rockin River Duck Drop include Unity National Bank, A.M. Leonard, Crayex Corporation, Ticon Paving, Miami Valley Centre Mall, and PSC Crane & Rigging. Prize donors include Tom Lillicrap Mulch & Timber Services, Barclays Mens-Womens Clothier and Town and Country Furniture.
