Ozempic has quickly become a hot-button issue in terms of diet trends, with many celebrities even opening up about the possibility of using it to shed pounds quickly. Dr. Thomas Su, a plastic surgeon, exclusively broke downthe controversial weight loss plan forUs.
Thedrug was never meant to be for people who are near their ideal weight. It's not even approved by the FDA for casual weight loss, the Artistic LipoSculpting Center owner, 54, exclusively toldUs Weeklyearlier this month. There are exact stipulations that patients need to meet to qualify for Wegovy as a weight loss medication [including] their BMI requirement [and] they have to be over 30. So for casual weight loss, it's not approved and would be considered an off-label use.
He added: Now that being said, will it work for weight loss is someone who is closer to their ideal [weight]? Yes, it will. It's not a good idea for someone who hopes to keep it off because one thing that we know is when you stop the medication, whether it be a few months down the road or a year later, your weight will come back pretty rapidly. It's not a good weight loss measure if you're really planning to keep something off.
According to theU.S. Food and Drug Administration(FDA), Ozempic and Wegovy are medications that are commonly used for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or who are overweight with a weight-related condition, including high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes. However, many celebrities have been vocal about trying the drug as a simple alternative to shed pounds.
It's an easy method to lose weight. It doesn't require a lot of thinking or a lot of effort, Su said on March 3. You give yourself an injection, and your appetite issuppressed and you're notsuffering from it. So you naturally just eat less. You're not having to struggle through cravings or going to the gym and working out hard so it's taking off weight in an easy fashion.

Ozempic was initially approved by the FDA to improve the secretion of insulin in individuals with diabetes, with an unintended side effect of weight loss. As a result, the brand began marketing it as a specific weight loss tool.
It's going to take a little bit of time, maybe a whole month before someone starts to see any noticeable weight change, and the effects of it can be variable from person to person, Su said. "So, some people really don't respond well to Ozempic as a weight loss medication.
The Florida-based physician further explained that Ozempic's side effects are primarily related to gastrointestinal issues.
This medication does slow down the absorption and emptying of the gut so it can cause nausea, vomiting and constipation. Su toldUs. "Those type of side effects are usually noticed mostly at the beginning, maybe in the first few weeks of someone using it. Most people would see that those side effects are going away and if not, some doctors are spacing out the injections a little bit further or reducing the dose.
After users stop taking Ozempic, there is a major risk of unwanted weight gain rapidly.
I don't think [theres any way to stop it], Su posited. It says it's an artificial means of losing weight and unless you do takedrastic measures and change your diet after you get off of Ozempic, then you're not going to maintain that weight gain and you're going to notice that your appetite probably comes back very ravenously after you stop it.
The medication, however, can be a long-term solution for individuals with weight-related conditions.
We know that for Type 2 diabetics, it's going to be a lifelong medication that they're going to be on and for people who are heavier, it can be a long-term solution too, the University Of Texas Medical School alum said. If you have a co-morbid condition,such as high blood pressure, or cardiac disease or high cholesterol if you have one other high-risk factor for cardiac disease, Wegovy is actually approved, and it's meant for long-term use, not just for one year but for pretty much forever for management of that disease, just like a high blood pressure medication will become a permanent part of your medication regimen.

Diet and exercise interventions fail to affect microbiome in CF… – Cystic Fibrosis News Today
Neither exercise nor nutritional interventions were found to affect the microbial population typically an underlying cause of lung function decline and disease progression in cystic fibrosis (CF) in the lung and gut of people with CF, a study in Germany shows.
That microbial population remained stable despite efforts to improve patient nutrition and exercise.
In summary, there is a lack of effective microbiome-modulating therapies to overcome the vigorous pathogen [disease-causing]-dominated signature of the CF respiratory microbiome, the researchers concluded.
The team added that further studies are required to understand which therapy could destabilize the dominant disease-associated microbial composition of [people with] CF.
The study, Resilience and stability of the CF- intestinal and respiratory microbiome during nutritional and exercise intervention, was published in the journal BMC Microbiology.
CF is characterized by the accumulation of sticky and thick mucus, particularly in the lungs, gastrointestinal and reproductive organs. It is caused by mutations in the CFTR gene, which provides instructions to produce the CFTR protein that regulates water and salt flow in and out of cells.
In the lungs, the accumulation of mucus promotes the growth of disease-causing microbes. A decreased microbe diversity together with an increased dominance of disease-causing microbes correlate with a decline in lung function and disease progression.
Also, changes in the gut microbiome, the microbial population, are associated with lung infections.
Both diet and exercise may impact microbial composition in CF. For instance, a diet high in fiber or fermented foods might influence immune responses. In people with CF, taking probiotics supplements with live microorganisms intended to have health benefits in the body has been associated with fewer pulmonary exacerbations, or sudden worsening of respiratory symptoms. These supplements also may decrease gastrointestinal inflammation. However, the evidence is limited.
Multiple studies also have linked physical exercise with the modulation of the gut microbiome. But any potential impact on the lung microbiome has not yet been studied.
Now, a team of researchers in Germany sought to test whether increased physical activity, nutritional improvements, and supplementation with probiotics could impact the intestinal and lung microbiome in people with CF.
To that end, a personalized diet and exercise program was offered to 18 patients with CF for one year (12 months). Among the participants, 10 (56%) were men, and the median age was 29.5. All but one patient (17 in total) had pancreatic insufficiency, and 14 had a F508del mutation in at least one CFTR gene copy. Pancreatic insufficiency occurs when the body does not make enough of a specific enzyme needed to digest food in the small intestine. The F508del mutation is the most common in CF.
Clinical assessments and microbiome evaluation were performed before the study started, after three months, and after one year.
During the study, participants increased their training minutes per week by 42%. Their strength and endurance training was monitored by a sports scientist via the internet.
Results showed that fat-free mass increased with training. Cardiopulmonary fitness remained stable and lung function decreased.
Nutritional interventions, in the form of counseling, were offered based on food-weighting protocols. Fat and protein intake was 51% and 28%, respectively, and was not altered throughout the study. For CF patients, nutritional recommendations suggest fat intake representing 35%-45% of total caloric intake and protein intake of more than 20%.
All participants took probiotics specifically Lactobacillus rhamnosus LGG between months three and 12.
The researchers analyzed stool and sputum samples to assess the impact of the nutritional and exercise interventions on the gut and lung microbiome. Parameters such as microbial diversity, richness and dominance were analyzed.
No differences in diversity were observed over time, indicating a stable microbiome composition, according to the team.
Microbiome composition was highly specific for each patient and was impacted by disease severity. CF severity explained 8% of the variance in sputum microbiome and 7% of that in stool.
Disease-associated microbes dominated sputum composition. The dominance of Pseudomonas bacteria was linked to moderate-severe lung disease, whereas both Staphylococcus and Streptococcus were dominant in the lung microbiome of individuals with better lung function.
For the lung microbiome, neither training nor lung function parameters were related to changes in microbiome composition. In the gut microbiome, lung function, but not training frequency or time, was significantly associated with microbial changes.
According to the researchers, this suggests stability and lower-complexity of sputum compared to stool.
There is a lack of effective microbiome-modulating therapies to overcome the vigorous pathogen [disease-causing]-dominated signature of the CF respiratory microbiome.
Recent antibiotic treatment, either orally or into-the-vein (intravenously), taken within the prior two weeks before sampling, significantly decreased the diversity and richness of the gut microbiome. However, long-term antibiotic treatment burden had a minor influence.
Although not statistically significant, changes in total antibiotic burden explained around 10% of the microbial composition in stool samples, but just around 1% among sputum samples.
Despite the exercise and nutritional intervention, respiratory and intestinal microbiomes proved to be resilient, the researchers wrote. Resilience is the ability of the microbiome to remain or return to a stable state composition, demonstrated here by the lack of significant variation in the same patient or between patients.
We demonstrate that the resilience of the CF respiratory microbiome is driven by the high stability and dominance of disease-associated pathogens, they added.
The team noted that new, highly effective CFTR-modulator therapieshave recently been approved.
These CFTR-modulator therapeutics might have the potential to surpass the demonstrated resilience of CF microbiomes. Future studies on CF microbiome composition under these therapeutics are needed, the researchers concluded.

Steady Diet of Racing at Florida Putting Joshua Liendo in Position for 2024
The messaging from Swimming Canada through 2020 and into 2021 highlighted a dearth of racing, even by COVID-19 pandemic standards. One of the last major nations to hold its trials for the Tokyo Olympics and one of the most heavily impacted by pandemic restrictions, the program persevered at the Summer Games despite being short on competitions in the lead-up.
Those conditions factored into the decision by Joshua Liendo, who identifies first and foremost as a racer, to head south for college swimming at the University of Florida. Hes thrilled by how his first year in Florida has worked out.

Im getting world-class racing down here, regularly, which is great, Liendo said by phone last week as he preps for NCAA Championships. I feel like its just going to be that much better because by the time I get to Worlds, its going to be that Ive been doing it so much and so often that its only going to make me better.
Liendo has flourished in Florida, accelerating a trajectory well underway before he left Canada. At the SEC Championships, he won the 100 butterfly in 44.11 seconds. He was second to Tennessees Jordan Crooks in both the 50 freestyle (Liendo went 18.39) and the 100 (41.24). All three are NCAA A cuts.
Liendo split 18.20 off the end of the Gators silver-winning 200 medley relay and 18.02 as the Gators won gold in the 200 free relay. He helped Florida win the 400 medley relay, swimming fly, in an SEC record and was part of the runner-up 400 free relay. The Gators have a chance to topple NCAA records in both the 200 free relay (they were .11 off the 2009 standard of Auburn) and the 400 medley relay (.26 away from Texass 2017 mark).
Hes being driven forward by friend and foe alike. He and Crooks tangled in each individual event in SECs in College Station, Texas. The competition seems to have brought out the best in both, and the Caymanian is a likely rival on the international stage for years to come.
Racing him, Ive learned a lot, and then theres that competitive aspect about it where every race is close, Liendo said. Im always on my toes, and Jordan is a great guy. Hes really humble, hes a nice dude and a talented athlete, and its always a pleasure to race against him. Id race against him all the time if I could, because I feel like I get better from racing him.
The team atmosphere in Gainesville about speaks for itself. Hes surrounded by outstanding sprinters Florida went second, fourth, seventh and eighth in the 100 free at SECs, for instance. He shares a team with Olympians Alberto Mestre and Alfonso Mestre, not to mention Gator Swim Clubs rolodex of post-grad standouts. A group that counts Anthony Nesty as the head coach and Katie Ledecky as a graduate assistant has no shortage of motivation and knowhow on deck.
We have a large group of guys that can all go fast at any given time and at practices, he said. Theres always someone to push me in practice, which I find really good. The group dynamic, we always have fun in practice, its a really good time to be with them in practice and obviously at meets. Im having a lot of fun and Im enjoying it a lot.
College life is an adjustment, but Liendo has managed fairly well. At 20, hes on the older side for a freshman, but hes grateful for the help hes gotten from Florida in his transition.
A thornier change is to short-course yards, even if the results dont necessarily prove it. Its a different discipline from the short-course meters he trained at the High Performance Centre in Ontario. The vagaries are pronounced for a sprinter, with execution of turns and starts so precise and the margins vanishingly small.
Liendo credits Crooks with being better in those areas than he is, which is one dimension in which hes using the Tennessee sophomore as a measuring stick.
It was definitely a big adjustment, Liendo said. Even at SECs, Im still missing my turns, stuff like that. Its almost a different sport, the way you have to think about it very detail-oriented, not as much swimming even, lot of underwaters and stuff like that.
The Gators have had a stranglehold on the SEC, winning 11 straight mens titles. But their sights are set higher this year, to be players on the national scene.
Its been trending in that direction under Nesty, and attracting talent like Liendo is a big reason why. Florida hasnt won an NCAA title on the mens side since 1984. Its last top-two finish was in 1985. The Gators were third each of the last two seasons and five times in the last decade. But theyve dropped as low as eighth (in 2012) and were fifth in 2018, the last time the meet was held at the University of Minnesota, this years home.
This year seems more open. With the emergence of Arizona State, the duopoly of California and Texas, which have claimed sole possession of the top two spots each year since 2014, seems in jeopardy. It could create an opening for Florida to do something special, and the Gators know it.
As contenders in all five relays and depth that should pack A finals across the board, hope is palpable.
We started talking about it at SECs, Liendo said. Were close to these records already, so with the team that we have and as well as weve done, the whole group has improved and theyve gotten a lot better, even when you look at them from last year. We were talking about NCAAs and seeing what it takes to be at the top and who we have to beat and the things we have to do in order to win. Thats where our head is at right now, and were in a good spot right now to do something special at NCAAs.
Liendo seems to be in an interesting spot in the quadrennial Olympic cycle, shortened to a three-year wait after Tokyos postponement. Liendo is a figurehead for the Canadian mens program, with Olympic experience and international pedigree that hes only burnished since Tokyo. He gleaned bronze medals in the 50 free and 100 free at the World Short-Course Championships in 2021. He added bronze in the 100 free and 100 fly at Worlds in Budapest, then capped a busy summer of making up for lost racing time with gold in the 100 fly and bronze in the 50 free at the Commonwealth Games.
The pressure of a looming Olympics is always there, Liendo said, if less prevalent before the countdown clock ticks under 12 months to Opening Ceremonies. But Liendo would be lying if he said that one eye isnt always on Paris.
Luckily, his short-term aspirations in Gainesville and his long-term international hopes are aligned.
I kind of know the next steps I need to take to continue getting better, so I feel like this year, with the World Championships and coming down here and getting a lot of racing in NCAAs, Im using it as a prep for this Olympic year, he said. I try to always be good in all the races I do and to keep improving, so Im looking at this year to learn from it and Im going to take what I learned from this year to take into the Olympic year next year.

Adding 30 grams of green jackfruit flour with whole-wheat flour or rice batter in each meal of persons with diabetes has resulted in remarkable improvement in their blood glucose levels. Use green jackfruit flour on a daily basis and the benefits are visible in most of the metabolic parameters including blood sugar levels and glycemic variability. Sheryl Salis, Registered Dietitian, Diabetes Educator and Founder of Nurture Health Solutions, revealed, 30g green jackfruit flour, owing to a low bulk density and an iso-volume effect, replaces 50g of wheat or rice or millet flour. The amount of soluble fiber is higher even for a smaller volume of green jackfruit flour (30g) when compared to 50g of wheat or rice or millet flour. When you look into the glycaemic index (GI) and glycaemic load (GL) of a variety of Indian foods, the GI of bajra roti and maize or corn or makka roti is higher than that of green jackfruit flour, which has a moderate GI and moderate GL but, what is really striking is that it has high amylose content and consists of type 2 resistant starch, which makes the GI lower."
She highlighted, It is also a good prebiotic. Furthermore, this is in line with the American Diabetes Associations (ADA) clinical practice recommendations which state that individuals who have pre-diabetes or diabetes should receive individualized Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) as needed to achieve treatment goals. With the incorporation of green jackfruit flour, patients have achieved satiety much faster and the post-meal blood glucose levels were definitely much better. Thus, re-iterating the fact that integration of MNT into diabetes care has the potential to improve diabetes management.

Shania Twain is getting candid on her first "Chicken Shop Date."
On Friday, the Canadian country music star, 57, was featured on Amelia Dimoldenberg's YouTube series, "Chicken Shop Date." In the five-minute video, she opened up about her pre-show diet, and the meaning behind her sixth studio album, "Queen Of Me."
After revealing that she is a vegetarian, Twain shared she has other dietary restrictions reserved for the days she has to sing live.
"Show days, it's only liquids," she said.
"Man, I feel like a... burp," Dimoldenberg quipped before asking the singer if she has ever actually met Brad Pitt who is referenced in the lyrics of Twain's iconic hit, "Man, I Feel Like A Woman!"
"No," she replied, before joking, "I think he's avoiding me, honestly."
The meaning behind Twain's latest album is seemingly more accurate and personal, however.
"'Queen Of Me' means I am my own boss. I drive my own bus," she said. "What I really mean is that I take charge of myself. I take responsibility for myself."
In the video, Twain and Dimoldenberg also chatted about Harry Styles (sadly, Shania would not reveal his phone number), going to space and a variety of other hilarious topics.
Last month, the "Any Man Of Mine" singer made an appearance on "The Late Late Show With James Corden," in celebration of her album release.
"Lets f%#$ing go, girls!" she cleverly penned in the caption.
In the clip, Corden asks Tain about the "parental advisory" label for explicit content on her album, calling it a "first" for her.
"What is this explicit content we are being advised?" he asked, to which Twain quipped in response: "I'm not really sure what the f- you mean by that."
"Queen of f-g me I like that," she joked.

So, how serious is the H3N2 virus? Technically anyone who comes in contact with the virus can contract this disease. Most people with normal immunity will manifest symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection. However, this particular virus can cause severe complications with certain high-risk groups. These include patients with pre-existing lung diseases such as COPD, asthma, smokers, diabetics, patients who are immunocompromised or those who have low immunity, and patients above 65 years of age, says Dr Agrawal.
The H3N2 virus can be extremely contagious and is transmitted from an infected person to another through droplets released when coughing, sneezing, or talking. It can also spread if someone touches their mouth or nose after contacting a surface that had the virus on it. Pregnant women, young children, elderly adults, and persons with underlying medical issues are at a higher risk of flu-related complications.
Can it be prevented?
COVID-proper conduct, which we have learnt in the past few years can aid in the prevention of flu. These include avoiding crowded places, wearing a face mask, washing hands frequently with soap and water and not touching your face too often. Additionally, experts also recommend yearly influenza flu shots for prevention of the flu.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has issued cautionary note and directed doctors and pharmacists to avoid the prescription of antibiotics to H3N2 patients. People start taking antibiotics like Azithromycin and Amoxiclav, etc., that too without caring for dosage and frequency and stop it once they start feeling better. This needs to be stopped as it leads to antibiotic resistance. Whenever there will be a real use of antibiotics, they will not work due to the resistance.
Oseltamivir is the antiviral drug used to treat children and adults infected by H3N2 virus. It has to be taken exactly as directed by your doctor. Most of the cases are self-limiting and the patients improve within five-seven days of contracting the disease. The use of Oseltamivir is especially helpful in earlier recovery from illness, adds the expert.

When you or a loved one has the flu, the last thing you may feel like doing is eating. And its certainly okay to eat a little less, as you likely have a reduced appetite believes Dr Deepu John, chief Ayurveda physician, Kairali The Ayurvedic Healing Village. The first line of treatment to manage the flu is to rest the body. This will help to decrease the viral load in the body and increase immunity. And since the digestive fire in the body is at its lowest you should avoid heavy meals, spicy foods, raw salads and cold items such as curds.

Simple food like rice or millet porridge and soups are easy on the stomach. Sip warm water throughout the day, preferably chukku malli water. This can be made by boiling a litre of water with an inch of dry ginger and a teaspoon of whole coriander seeds. This helps to get rid of headache and sore throat associated with flu. You can also gargle with triphala. Just boil two glasses of water with half a teaspoon of triphala powder. Reduce it to a glass, add a pinch of rock salt and gargle with the water, says Dr John.

According to nutritionist Shweta Shah, founder of Eatfit24/7, ghee and cloves are the magic ingredients that go a long way in helping your body to recover and replenish. According to Ayurveda, cloves help to break down congestion while ghee as a healthy fat helps to reach all the organs in the body. Take a tablespoon ofghee and warm it along with a few pieces of cloves. Strain it and drink it. Heating enables the cloves to release its oil in the ghee. This concoction is a natural soother and great to cure sore throat, cough, cold and sinus. Its safe for children as well as adults, explains Shah.
For blocked nose and chest congestion she suggests making a potli of ajwain (carom seeds). Ajwain is nothing short of a wonder spice. It contains thymol, which has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. Place the potli on a heated tawa for five-seven minutes or in the microwave for 3-4 mins. Then place the preheated potli over the third eye chakra or in the middle of both your eyebrows on your forehead. For the next position, hold it next to your nose so that you can take in the vapours by inhaling it. Lastly, hold the warm potli over your neck and chest for warm compress. This brings instant relief from most flu-related symptoms.

She tells us: I regard beauty and wellness as a form of self-care, whether its drawing a relaxing bath, popping on a hydrating sheet mask or just applying my skincare mindfully. I always feel better after a spot of pampering.
At 41, Im comfortable in my own skin. I think with age comes confidence. I am of the belief that ageing is a privilege denied to so many, you get one life and its so important to live it.
When it comes to her skincare regime, the Tipperary native says she takes a holistic approach and lives by the motto you are what you eat.
I nourish my skin from the inside out: I eat a balanced diet with lots of fruit and vegetables, oily fish and I drink six glasses of water a day, Una says.
I also take supplements: Nordic Naturals, Complete Omega-3.6.9 and Valens, Premium Collagen Complex in the morning.
Fitness and exercise is also very important for Unas physical and mental health and credits it with helping her maintain healthy and glowing skin.
She adds: I enjoy keeping fit with long walks and running. I also do weight-training five-six times a week. I have a little studio at home its my sanctuary and its so important for my physical and mental health.
In terms of her daily skincare routine, Una describes it as straightforward but result driven.
I cleanse, tone, apply active serums and a deeply hydrating moisturiser. I never leave the house without SPF 50.

Are your hormones wreaking havoc on your gut health? – Stylist Magazine
Hormonal balance and gut health are two buzz phrases that have certainly been hitting the headlines in recent years. It seems that every other day, another wellness influencer or brand is promoting another way to better balance hormones or improve the state of out gut microbiome.
Interestingly, however, the connection between the gut and hormones hasnt been as loudly shouted about despite an emerging body of research showing that the two areas of health are inextricably linked.
So, whats the connection and what does it mean for those of us trying to work towards better gut or hormonal health?
Our hormones are clever chemical messengers that have an important role to play in lots of our bodily functions, including digestion.Its the role of specific hormones to tell us when were hungry (ghrelin) and when were full (leptin), but even those not obviously associated with digestion have a key relationship with our gut.
Some vital hormones are actually produced by the bacteria present in our gut, explains registered nutritionist Rhiannon Lambert,author of The Science of Nutrition.
For example, did you know that 95% of serotonin (AKA our happy hormone) is produced there? Lambert says. Serotonin is also involved in the conversion of melatonin (our sleep hormone) and helps regulate our circadian rhythms. There is evidence that suggests our gut microbiome is involved in the regulation of oestrogen too, one of the main female sex hormones.
And lets not forget that the gut also has a key role to play in absorbing nutrients from our food and supporting the elimination of toxins. If your natural detox system goes off-piste, that can cause hormonal imbalances. On top of this, our GI tract also houses around 70-80% of our immune system and if this becomes disrupted, it can cause issues with our hormone levels.
If youre thinking this all sounds incredibly interconnected, thats because it is. Put simply, it means that if your gut isnt working as effectively as it should, hormone production can be impacted which has a knock-on effect on your mental and physical health.
Of course, it works the other way, too. High or low levels of certain hormones can impact the way our digestion works, leading to problems such as bloating, constipation, nausea or diarrhoea. You may have felt sick when stressed, or know only too well how fluctuations in our sex hormones can affect your bowel habits (yes, period poo really is a thing!).

Research shows there are microbes working in our gut that can tweak the amount of oestrogen in our bodies. This part of our microbiome is called the estrobolome and its a collection of bacteria in the gut capable of breaking down and changing the levels of circulating oestrogen in the body, explains DrFedericaAmati, a medical scientist and nutritionist at Imperial College London and personalised nutrition company ZOE.
On the other side, oestrogen and progesterone levels can also have a direct impact on our digestive system in terms of gut motility (how quickly food moves through our digestive system) and the composition of our microbiome.
High progesterone is associated with a slowing of gut movement, says Dr Amati. This is very useful in pregnancy when progesterone levels are high, as it gives our body more time to extract as many nutrients as possible from our food in order to help progress the pregnancy. But this can also cause constipation, so drinking plenty of water and eating fibre is very important during pregnancy and towards the second half of our menstrual cycle, when this hormone is also heightened.
High levels of cortisol and adrenalin have two main effects on our gut, explains Dr Amati. First, they drive us to prefer easy-to-absorb carbohydrates that require little effort to absorb for maximum energy. Second, they divert blood flow from our gut to our limbs, prioritising our ability to run away from the threat over the process of digesting a big meal.
That might sound pointless in an age of laptops and concrete, but it was an absolutely vital mechanism back in the day when we used to face imminent threats. Its less useful if we are in a state of chronic high stress due to perceived dangers such as being late for a deadline, Dr Amati says.
In fact, increased stress hormones have been linked to many digestive problems.Research suggests it can change the make-up of your microbiome, resulting in an increase in harmful bacteria. It can also affect gut motility and permeability (the ability of the gut lining to act as a barrier and stop bacteria and toxins from leaking into the bloodstream).
Its no wonder, then, that high levels of stress hormones have been linked to conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease.
Interestingly, however, a healthy gut can have a beneficial impact on these hormones. If our gut is functioning properly, it can help to regulate our stress response and reduce anxiety.
Recent research has shown there are key differences between male and female gut microbiomes, and its even been given a name the microgenderdome. For example, studies have shown that irritable bowel syndrome and autoimmune diseases are much more common in women, and data indicates that our guts can show sex-specific responses to exactly the same diet. The main reason for that? The different hormone levels between the two sexes.
If youre in the habit of tracking your gut health, you might have noticed that your period coincides with symptoms like loose stools, tummy pain and bloating, says Laura Tilt, a registered dietitian and ambassador for probiotic supplement brand Symprove.
In one study of healthy women, 73% reported at least one gut symptom just before or during their period, most often abdominal pain and diarrhoea. The trigger for these symptoms is believed to be the drop in ovarian hormones which takes place just before your period. At the same time, theres a spike in prostaglandin hormones which cause the uterus to contract, and which causes the gut to contract too.
Hormonal shifts in our body caused by other events such as pregnancy can also impact our digestive system.
Gut health can be massively impacted by the changes in our body that happen during pregnancy, says Lambert. For example, as your baby grows, digestion slows down and the chance of constipation increases as a result.
During pregnancy there are also huge fluctuations in hormone levels. These changes, especially the increase in human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) in early pregnancy, can cause nausea. This may lead to lack of appetite and therefore less diversity in the diet, which we know is associated with poorer gut health.
Theres the menopause to think about, too. Changes to levels of oestrogen and progesterone in the body at this time may cause slower digestion, which could lead to bloating or constipation.
Its important to remember that our hormones and gut are part of a much bigger system and are impacted by many things in our body (as well as each other). However, science shows they are key parts of the puzzle so how can we help our guts and hormones work in synergy andstay balanced?
While there is still much research to be done looking at the direct link between our guts and hormones, making sure we have a balanced and varied diet is important for many aspects of our health, including our gut and hormone health, says Lambert.
Its also important to make sure were getting good-quality sleep and managing our stress levels as this can have an impact on how our gut functions and our hormone levels.
Dr Amati adds that understanding and living in tune with how your body works can support your wellbeing.
Responding to our bodys hunger, tiredness and social signals and getting to know how we respond to food and hormonal changes is the first step in being able to live more intuitively, she says.
Working closely with women through major shifts in fertility, pregnancy and the menopause, I can see there is huge power in knowing how your body responds to fluctuations in our hormones and learning to harness your own existing biological power to maximise health, wellbeing and energy.
