It looks like the Seahawks have finally figured out how to get Eddie Lacy's weight in check: Pay him a ton of money to lose the pounds.
The team's newest running back, who signed a one-year deal with the Seahawks back in March, can make a total of $385,000 in bonus money this year if he makes weight during seven different weigh-ins over the course of the next six months.
Back in May, Lacy earned a cool $55,000during his first weigh-in when he checked in at 253 pounds. To collect the money last month, Lacy had to weigh 255 pounds or less.
To collect even more money on Monday, the Seahawks made things slightly more difficult: Lacy had to weigh 250 pounds or less. For a guy who once weighed 267 pounds this offseason, getting under 250 was no easy feat, but it looks like Lacy managed to do it for Monday's weigh-in.
Lacy's agents then confirmed that their client is now $55,000 richer with a tweet that included everyone's favorite emoji: Moneybags.
Although we don't know exactly how much weight Lacy lost, we do know that he went from 253 pounds to under 250, so he's lost at least four pounds since last month.
If you're scoring at home, Lacy has now collected a total of $110,000 over the past month for losing weight. Lacy will get a chance to add $55,000 to that total in August when he gets weighed again.
The Seahawks will then give Lacy five more chances to earn $55,000 when he gets weighed once-a-month during the NFL season. To earn the money, Lacy will have to weigh 245 pounds or less in each month from September through December.
For a guy who loves Chinese food, you can bet that losing the weight hasn't been easy.
Let's be honest here, one order of General Tso's chicken could've put Lacy over the 250 mark and cost him $55,000. I have no idea how many calories are in General Tso's chicken, but it's a lot. I once gained 15 pounds in college after eating the stuff for pretty much every meal during an entire week.
During OTAs, Lacy explained why he decided to accept the weight incentives in his contract.
"Challenges. As a competitor, you want to be challenged," Lacy said, via ESPN.com. "So it's a positive challenge. At the end of the day, it helps me personally, too, so why not?"
Apparently, not only does it take a village to raise a child, but it also takes a village to help Lacy lose weight.
"I have a great support group behind me from coaches to players to the nutrition team," Lacy said, naming everyone who's helped him lose weight. "So everybody's positive, which helps me because I know I have a group of people behind me pushing me, so it's all working out, it's all going great. I've just got to continue to go that way."

Researchers from the University of Copenhagen, together with colleagues from the University of Colorado, Tufts University, Centro de Investigacin Biomdica en Red de Fisiopatologa de la Obesidad y Nutricin (CIBER OBN) and Gelesis, Inc., presented new data demonstrating that blood sugar (glucose) and/or fasting insulin should be used to select the right diet, particularly for people with prediabetes and diabetes. Evaluated across six major interventional diet studies utilizing a variety of nutrition strategies, these biomarkers were repeatedly proven as predictors of weight loss and maintenance success.
The specific diets that will work differ based on whether a patient has normal blood sugar, has prediabetes or is living with diabetes. The data were presented at the American Diabetes Association 77th Scientific Sessions.
Remarkably, for many patients, use of these biomarkers can lead to a six- to seven-fold greater weight loss, commented Arne Astrup, Professor, Head of the Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Going forward, we can educate patients when a diet they planned to follow would actually make them gain weight, and redirect them to a strategy that we know will work for them.
The studies demonstrate that, for successful weight loss, fasting blood sugar and fasting insulin should be used to select an approach that is proven to work based on those biomarkers. For most people with prediabetes, a fiber-rich diet without calorie restriction will be very effective and has been shown to improve diabetes markers. In this population, carbohydrates or fats should be adjusted based on fasting insulin levels.
For people with type 2 diabetes, a diet rich in healthy, plant-based fats (such as from olive oil, nuts and avocados) will be effective to achieve weight loss. The researchers acknowledge that no one solution will work for every patient, but for many in the US and EU these strategies are likely to be more effective than a generic, one size fits all approach.
Our research shows that weight loss strategies should be customized based on an individuals biomarkers, which is a big step forward in using personalized nutrition to help people achieve greater weight loss success, continued Professor Astrup. These findings are particularly important as they allow us to provide those with prediabetes a custom strategy to help them lose weight, which can ultimately prevent or delay the development of type 2 diabetes.
The University of Copenhagen will continue to participate in and support research to explore additional biomarkers such as gut microbiota and genomics approaches, which may offer more insights and help to better predict success with specific diets.

These biomarkers were repeatedly proven as predictors of weight loss and maintenance success.

Theres a lot of evidence showing that veggies promote weight loss and lower risk of diseases. In fact, all popular diets (low-carb, paleo, vegan, and Mediterranean) encourage you to eat lots of veggies and fiber.
Fiber helps control hunger and regulates blood sugar levels. If you want to increase fiber intake, eat plant-based foods in every meal. And start snacking on fruits instead of junk food.
Here are tips for eating more vegetables.
Sugar is one of the worst foods you can put in your mouth. It has lots of calories but no nutrients.
Now, its easy to reduce intake of table sugar but added sugar is much harder to avoid. It is in all sorts of processed foods including tomato sauces, salad dressings and cereals.
First, find out if the foods you consume regularly contain added sugar. Then substitute them with healthier alternatives. For instance, you could substitute diet soda with fresh lemon juice. Reading labels can also help avoid added sugar. But keep in mind that companies use all sorts of tricks to hide sugar.
Refined grains can make it harder for you to drop pounds. They are low in nutrients and high in calories. They also trigger blood sugar spikes, which consequently increase appetite.
Highly consumed refined grains include bread, rice, pasta and cereal. Try to avoid these foods or opt for less processed alternatives like whole-wheat bread, brown rice, whole-wheat pasta and oatmeal.
You cant lose weight if you eat too many calories. Just consume enough calories to help fuel your body but not too much that youll end up gaining weight.
Dont obsess over every single calorie, but you can have a rough estimate of your total calorie intake. Learn how to control portions without counting calories.
Trans fats wont just make you gain weight, they can make you sick. Research has linked them to inflammation and heart disease.
Common foods rich in trans fats include baked foods, biscuits, microwave popcorn, crackers, margarine, and cream-filled candy. Avoid these foods completely since they have no health benefits.

Tara Kavanagh has several obese family members, so she always believed she was destined to be fat.
The 57 self-employed mom-of-three from Rapid City, South Dakota, 35, was already over 200 lbs. when she started having children, but her pregnancy weight brought her up to 304 lbs. After having her second child, she knew she wanted to make a change.
Iwas a young mother of two little girls and in my early 20s when I decided I didnt want to live the rest of my life obese and unhealthy anymore, she tells PEOPLE. I wanted to be an active mother and be able to play with my kids. I also wanted to live my life, not just exist. I wanted to experience new things and felt my size was holding me back.
Some of Kavanaghs family members had opted to undergo weight loss surgery, but had all ended up gaining their weight back. So she became determined to go a different route.
For a long time I felt surgery was my only option for how big I was there was no way I could lose so much weight on my own but after seeing my relatives gain their weight back, I knew it wasnt about the surgery, she says. It had to be about lifestyle, and I was determined to figure it out to prevent myself from spending all that money and going through all the pain of surgery for something that I never saw work long-term for anyone I knew who had it done.
Kavanagh admits she had never stuck to workout routines in the past because she would get bored before seeing any results. When she started doingJillian Michaelsworkouts (available onher appandFitFusion), she finally found a fitness program that she could stick to.
Jillians workouts are always fun and I look forward to doing them, she says. Right when I would be getting the hang of one workout, another would come out, so I never got bored. Over the years I have also appreciated that there are a variety of intensity levels to most moves, so no matter what weight I was at I could get a good workout. I still do the same workouts as a fit person that I did as a 300-lb. person, I just up the intensity level now to get my killer workout!
She also began paying more attention to what she ate.
I used to eat because I was bored, says Kavanagh. I never thought about what I was eating, how many calories were in it, the quality of it, etc. I ate because it made me feel good.

Initially, Kavanagh ate the same foods she always had, but started decreasing her portions.
I knew if I changed too much too fast I would get overwhelmed and quit, she says. After the weight started to come off, it was addictive for me to learn healthier ways of eating. I turned my focus on calories after that, living by what I learned from Jillian: my calories in needed to be less than my calories out. I used her app along with a fitness tracker, and the weight came off so easily!
Now Kavanagh focuses on eating unprocessed, non-GMO and organic as much as possible, and follows the 80/20 rule when it comes to eating.
I still need my treats once in a while! she says.
Losing 145 lbs. has given Kavanagh a whole new lease on life.
The best part of losing the weight has been gaining the confidence to really live my life and try new things, she says. I dont let my body hold me back anymore.

You did it! After four months of tracking calories, keeping a food journal and exercising, youve finally reached your weight loss goal.
But, as anyone who has lost weight can tell you, keeping the weight off is harder than losing it, and it has nothing to do with lack of willpower and everything to do with focusing on building health.
I believe a health-centered approach to weight loss focusing on healthy lifestyle changes is much better than obsessing over every fat gram, counting calories and using the scale to gauge your success.
As we enter the maintenance phase of Greene County Rural Health Networks Biggest Loser contest, I have put together seven easy-to-do health building steps you can follow so you never have to lose weight again.
H Have most of your calories during the day. My father-in-law always said breakfast like a king and dinner like a pauper. If you cant make breakfast your biggest meal, then make it lunch. Eating most of your calories during the day when youre active and not in the evening when your metabolism is slowing down makes a lot of sense, right?
E Eat three meals a day: No snacks. When you snack in-between meals, you teach your body to burn the sugar you just ate instead of digging deep into the stored fat you have. There is no proof grazing throughout the day revs up your metabolism. My advice is be a fat burner, not a sugar burner.
A Always have a healthy carb, fat and protein. This keeps you feeling fuller longer and reduces sugar cravings.
L Listen to your body. Have you ever finished a meal only to have a craving for something sweet? Or maybe you felt bloated, constipated or got a headache? Thats your body telling you that meal wasnt the right mix of carbs, fats and proteins.
T Take a multi-vitamin. If you think youre getting everything you need from your food, think again. When plants are repeatedly grown on the same land, the soil loses vitamins, minerals and microbes faster than they can be replaced. Without those precious vitamins and minerals youll quickly regain the weight you lost.
H Heal your liver. Your liver is meant to be a fat burning organ, but unfortunately, for many people, its a fat storing organ. But, you can easily turn that around by including super foods like dark green leafy veggies, garlic, onions and eggs in your diet.
Y Your eyes can deceive you. Research shows the size of your dinnerware impacts how much you serve yourself. I advised a client to eat his first two meals from a large plate and his last meal on a small plate. In 16 weeks he lost 60 pounds eating eggs and bacon for breakfast every morning.
There you have it: A common sense approach to maintaining your weight. Why not try it?

Diabetes is a common medical condition affecting around 29 million Americans or about 1 in 11 adults. Diabetes is a metabolic condition manifested by elevated levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood stream. Diabetes is generally divided into type 1 and type 2.
Type 1 typically occurs in children or adolescents and can cause acute life threatening illness, and only about 5 percent of diabetics are type 1. Type 1 diabetics require insulin to survive.
Type 2 diabetes typically arises in adults and can be treated with diet and oral medications, but sometimes requires insulin. Type 2 diabetes tends to be linked to obesity, but not in every case.Recently, I wrote about the obesity epidemic in the U.S. I reported some CDC statistics that indicated the obesity rates are rapidly rising. Specifically, the data showed that no state had an obesity rate over 15 percent in 1985 and by 2016 no state had an obesity rate less than 20 percent. The overall obesity rate is about 33 percent. It is amazing to see how the U.S. diabetes rates are following the same patterns, but lagging behind by several years. In other words, as obesity rates increase in certain states, diabetes rates increase in a very similar pattern.
Currently, diabetes is diagnosed in an individual with fasting blood glucose of 126 or more. Some providers require two separate tests to confirm the diagnosis. People often refer to prediabetes when the blood glucose fasting is between 100 and 126. Prediabetics have a higher tendency to develop diabetes at a later time. Gestational diabetes refers to women who have elevated blood glucose during pregnancy. These individuals also have a tendency toward developing diabetes later in life.
The main symptoms of diabetes are thirst and frequent urination. However, in the early stages, there may not be symptoms. So, efforts are made to catch diabetes early and to try to prevent it. It is not uncommon to have screening done through Health Risk Assessments or regular office visits. People with risk factors such, as elevated blood pressure or elevated cholesterol, are advised to be screened.
Diabetes affects a number of systems. It is the No. 1 cause of kidney failure. In addition to the kidneys, diabetes affects the eyes, nerves (causing neuropathy), digestion, blood vessels and the immune system. Cardiovascular disease is a result of blood vessel disease and is the leading cause of death in diabetics. Immune system dysfunction makes diabetics more prone to infections making immunizations a priority. Much of the diabetic care is focused on controlling the blood glucose levels and reducing the other risk factors including high blood pressure, cholesterol and smoking. Blood glucose control reduces tissue damage and complications.
Glucose control is generally monitored through a blood test referred to as the glycohemoglobin or A1c. This test measures glucose that is attached to the hemoglobin in red blood cells. Red blood cells recycle about every two months so this measurement gives an indication of the average blood glucose over a two-month time period and is used to monitor treatment plans.
The best way to prevent diabetes and help control it is to be active and control diet and weight. It is advised to do at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week. Diet changes include avoiding simple sugars in food and drink, avoiding fatty foods and controlling portions to control weight all help.
Like obesity, diabetes is becoming more prevalent at a rapid pace. Diabetes management presents many challenges for patients and health-care providers. The best way to try to avoid diabetes is through diet, exercise and weight control. Stay healthy my friends.

Is This ‘Diet’ Ice Cream Too Good to Be True? – The Daily Meal

Been to Whole Foods or CVS lately? If so, you may have been drawn in to the freezer aisle after noticing a particularly appealing-looking pint. 280 calories, the container boasts. Um, what? So theoretically, you could consume an entire pint of creamy ice cream while taking in fewer calories than a bowl of cereal? Yes, thats right.
Food-lovers, fitness freaks, moms, and Weight-Watchers fanatics have all stumbled upon this dessert-enabling haven in the freezer aisle. As Halo Tops website explains, the creamy confection is low-calorie, high-protein, and low-sugar. Whats more, they offer a huge variety of flavors ranging from Sea Salt Caramel and Mint Chip to Red Velvet and Pistachio. Too good to be true?
Some think so. On an online comments board, one skeptic insists, It tastes exactly like what it is: diet ice cream. I don't get why people are going crazy over this stuff. Sensory panelists for Consumer Reports thought Halo Top had a chalky texture and lacked the fullness of regular ice cream.
However, some ice cream eaters love it, chalky texture and all. One college student even went so far as to eat only Halo Top for an entire week. PopSugar conducted a blind taste test and reported, There was a whole lot of Love! and Delicious! and Yummy! in our taste test notes.
Here at The Daily Meal, we are just as divided.
Our editor-in-chief, Susan Houriet, was underwhelmed with the taste. I had heard great things about Halo Top at Weight Watchers, but I just couldn't get over the aftertaste of the sweetener they use. While she reported being able to taste a bitter residue of artificial sweetness in the dessert, I disagree I love it, and cant taste a bitter aftertaste. Its truly my dessert dream come true.
Nutritionist and health coach Cara Scinto, MS, believes the now I can eat as much ice cream as I want! mindset that comes with the low-calorie label isnt helpful. Yes, they're lower in sugar, which gives some folks the idea eating a full pint is okay. Which, to be totally honest, I think isn't the greatest health-wise. When we asked her why not, she responded, First off, the sugar alcohols that are added in place of real sugar can lead to stomach problems like a belly ache.
Plus, she pointed out, eating too much of a good thing isn't mindful eating.
In summary, the pint of Halo Top has the potential for other adverse health effects, regardless of its low calorie count especially when it comes to mental health. Despite being calorically equivalent to only a few bites of Ben and Jerrys, eating a pint of ice cream is still eating a pint of ice cream. That kind of eating isnt exactly considered moderation.
But what about the nutritional value? Is the healthy-looking label too good to be true? Weve gone through Halo Tops nutritional information so that you dont have to decipher the label through all the buy me! marketing.
The truth is, Halo Top isnt ice cream its artificially sweetened, contains a lot less fat, and slashes sugar from its ingredient list. How does Halo Top get so sweet? Stevia. Thats the simple answer. Stevia is a sweetener deemed natural by health experts because its been extracted from the stevia plant, Stevia rebaudiana. Its actually 200-300 times sweeter than regular sugar which explains why Halo Tops ice cream is so incredibly sweet.
The company has been a bit quieter about their use of erythritol a sugar alcohol that isnt metabolized by the body during digestion, resulting in zero calories and zero blood sugar spikes. However, the compound creates a bit of a controversy: While its been ambiguously deemed generally safe by the Food and Drug Administration, it has been known to cause some adverse side effects in consumers. Some have experienced headaches, diarrhea, and other digestion issues after eating foods high in erythritol. There hasnt been a great deal of additional research done on the compound, so youll have to be the judge!
Why does Halo Top taste so creamy? Cream. They use real cream. This factor the dairy is what distinguishes Halo Top from its diet ice cream competitors, like Arctic Zero. (Fear not, healthy readers the cream in Halo Top is diluted with milk to keep the fat content nice and low.)
How is it nutritionally? Truth be told, the nutritional data cant be beat. For a frozen treat to have only 60 calories and only 5 grams of sugar per serving is pretty incredible. The protein content is nothing particularly unusual, however real ice cream has just as much protein as this diet creation, averaging about 4 grams per half cup, so for Halo Top to hail itself as high-protein ice cream is a bit misleading.

As executive director of Destination DC, which markets the capital to travelers, Elliott Ferguson knows a thing or two about hotels. When he travels, one of the first things he looks for is a good fitness center.
"Before I physically go up to my room, I stop by . . . to assess what they have and figure out what I can do," Ferguson said. "Some hotels offer yoga and cycling and/or at least access to some of the various companies that do that here in Washington, D.C. That really makes a big difference when people are looking at where they're going to stay."
A growing number of hotels are making exercising on the road even more accessible - taking equipment to guest rooms.
At the end of May, the Hilton McLean in Virginia became one of two Hiltons to offer Five Feet to Fitness rooms, which have 11 pieces of workout equipment and accessories. They include an indoor Wattbike bicycle and Gym Rax, a training station that lets users tackle body-weight moves with TRX straps. The main attraction is the fitness kiosk, a touch-screen display that offers more than 200 videos, including tutorials on all the equipment, cycling, high-intensity interval training and yoga classes.
Customer feedback drove Hilton to build these rooms, which cost $45 to $90 more per night than standard rooms. About 10 percent to 15 percent of guests use the fitness center, and a quarter expressed interest in an in-room option, said Ryan Crabbe, senior director of global wellness at Hilton. He also cited a February report by the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration that says that "46 percent of guests expected to work out in the fitness center during their stay, but only 22 percent actually did so."
"Fitness centers will remain really important and I think the hub of activity for fitness-minded travelers," Crabbe said. "We just have a lot of guests who have told us that having an in-room fitness option would provide really nice convenience."
The Ritz-Carlton Georgetown reopened its spa and fitness center in April after a $1.5 million renovation that included the addition of 13 "spa-level" rooms. Costing $65 to $100 more per night, they include a wellness ball, yoga mat, aromatherapy and a white-noise machine.
"Some of those rooms are larger than the standard room, but what we did ensure is that you have enough space in either one of those rooms to do your basic workout and use the equipment that we've added," said Marcus Loevenforst, the hotel's general manager.
Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants offers Gaiam yoga mats in every room and on-demand TV programming that guides guests through 15- to 75-minute flow or power yoga or Pilates sessions. There's also the free "roll-out service," in which a staff member takes flavored water and fresh or dried fruit and nuts to the room, lays out the mat and turns on the fitness channel.
With no communal gym, Kimpton's Topaz Hotel in Washington has been providing fitness rooms stocked with an elliptical trainer, treadmill or recumbent bike since 2001. They cost $25 to $30 more than standard rooms, said Ben Timashenka, a regional vice president at Kimpton.
"The person that wants to work out, they want to have the ability to do so, whether that be a fitness center or individualizing your guest room," Timashenka said.
Danielle Young, 32, of San Mateo, California, changed her reservation when Westin Hotels & Resorts, part of Marriott International, on April 26 announced its partnership with Peloton, seller of indoor cycling bikes with screens for streaming real-time or on-demand classes. The deal puts the commercial-grade bikes in WestinWorkout rooms and fitness centers in 32 hotels nationwide.
"I literally got off the red-eye and went straight to the gym," Young said of the Westin Michigan Avenue Chicago Hotel, where she stayed on a recent business trip.
An avid Peloton user since 2014, she travels two to three weeks each month. "I prioritize my fitness when I travel. It's just a really important element to me," Young said. "This has made it that much easier for me to know I'm going to get those high-quality workouts."
About 70 Westins have been offering fitness rooms with cycling bikes or treadmills. The Peloton rooms also have yoga mats, blocks and straps, and light weights that guests can use with Peloton's Beyond the Ride stretching, core and toning classes.
The partnership came about after a survey by the hotel last year found that 70 percent of global travelers struggle to maintain their wellness routines on the road, said Sarah Lipton, the brand's global director of marketing and management, and that 51 percent of Westin guests are likely to have gym memberships.
"Gyms have become something that cannot be an afterthought in hotels," Lipton said.
Another chain taking fitness to the room is Even Hotels by InterContinental Hotels Group, which is featuring cork flooring and exercise equpment for in-room workouts.
Tryp Hotels Worldwide, part of Wyndham Hotels and Resorts, has fitness rooms that come with a treadmill, elliptical or stationary bike, plus workout gear, clothing and a mat, while guests of Trump Hotels can request in-room equipment, Under Armour workout clothing and loaded iPod shuffles through the Travel Fit program.
With 85 percent of hotels offering an exercise room or fitness facility last year, up from 63 percent in 2004, according to the American Hotel & Lodging Association's 2016 Lodging Survey, it's clear that fitness is growing in importance.
When hotels began adding fitness centers, they were relegated to the basement and had a couple of basic cardio machines, said Abid Butt, an instructor in the global hospitality leadership program at Georgetown University's School of Continuing Studies. "We've come a long ways when it comes to fitness at hotels," Butt said. "I think it will be there for a long time."
The hotel industry is also responding to a changing demographic, said Larry Yu, professor of hospitality management at George Washington University.
"Evolving from baby boomers to millennials, fitness has really become a lifestyle," Yu said. "It's not just your typical amenity now. Hotels are all working very hard to figure out how they can provide the best service and equipment to the guests because the guests expect and value those."
But in-room fitness isn't an option for every hotel. "A treadmill or an elliptical or a big piece like that is still a little bit impractical, especially treadmills because there are sound issues - the pounding of the treadmill, the size," said Kurt Broadhag, president and lead designer at K Allan Consulting, which helps hotels design gyms. "It really lends itself more to mind/body classes, where you want an intimate setting."
Because of that, "I don't think the fitness center is ever going to go away," he added.
Jeff David, general manager at Washington's Watergate Hotel, agrees. This year, it opened its $3.5 million spa and wellness center, including a 1,831-square-foot gym. Additionally, the hotel has started offering fitness classes such as rooftop yoga, power sculpt and aqua barre in the pool.
"The new renaissance is the gym facilities are starting to be quantified and key differentiators [in] how people decide their stay," David said. "I see that fitness is starting to become a pillar, much like food and beverage or rooms."
