EVER wondered what effect Marios mushroom diet is having on his health?
Wonder no more.
Fitness app Lifesum has partnered with theoretical physicist Dr. Matt Caplan to analyse the exercise and dietary habits of iconic video game characters.
Theyve done dietary assessments, fitness analyses and calorific calculations for household names like Mario, Sonic, and LaraCroft.
Turns out that Mario is clinically obese, Master Chief would need to eat more than a full adult males daily intake for each hour of intense combat and Zeldas Link would have to chow down on a fairy corpse every half-hour to sustain his calorie expenditure.
Heres a breakdown of your favourite characters.
First up is Sonic.
The Blue Blur has long been famous for running at the speed of sound(around 770 mph).
If Sonics metabolism is anything like that of a human, who burns roughly 150 calories per mile run, then he could burn 33 lbs (15kg) in an hour, Dr Matt explains.

This would take an average human 500 hours of medium-pace walking to burn however, despite his BMI indicating that his metabolism is considerably worse than that of an average human, Sonic naturally moves considerably faster than a medium-pace walk.
Next, its Crash Bandicoot.
According to the nutrition experts, Crash, a large, upright bandicoot (typically a small-to-medium-sized marsupial native to parts of Australasia) has a healthy Body Mass Index of 21.1.
In his attempt to rescue his girlfriend Tawna (who is reportedly based on Pamela Anderson) from Doctor Cortexs experiments, he collects wumpa fruit.

Selling access to rewards programs that offer cash for meeting weight loss goals may incentivize program participants to lose more weight, new research suggests.
The workhas implications for insurance companies and employers looking for low-cost strategies to improve population health.
Eric Finkelstein, a professor at the Duke-NUS Medical School, used insights from behavioral economics to develop a rewards program aimed to address the disconnect between long-term health and short-term temptation. He then teamed up with Kwang Wei Tham from Singapore General Hospital (SGH) to test it out among overweight or obese adults.
In the randomized, eight-month-long, Singapore-based Trial on Incentives for Obesity (TRIO), 161 participants paid S$234 ($161 USD) to gain access to a 16-week intensive weight loss program.
The program required participants to attend weekly sessions at the Lifestyle Improvement and Fitness Enhancement (LIFE) Centre at SGH where they were taught skills to maintain a healthy lifestyle and encouraged to lose at least 5 percent of their body weight.
Participants also paid an additional S$165 ($119 USD) for the rewards program. Participants in this groupcould earn monthly rewards either in cash or as a lottery ticket with a one in 10 chance of winning 10 times the cash amount if they met monthly weight loss and step goals. Additional rewards were offered for meeting 5 percent or 8 percent weight loss goals at months four and eight.
The maximum possible reward value over the eight-month period was S$660 ($477 USD) if all weight loss and step goals were met. Those randomized to the control arm had their money returned and were ineligible for rewards.
At the end of month four, weight loss was more than twice as great in the rewards arm compared with the control arm (average 3.4 kg versus 1.4 kg weight loss). At months eight and 12, weight loss remained greater (average 3.3 kg vs. 1.8 kg weight loss at month eight and 2.3 kg vs 0.8 kg weight loss at month 12).
Moreover, more than three times as many rewards arm participants achieved 5 percent or greater weight loss at month four, relative to control arm participants (40 percent vs. 12 percent). At month four more than twice as many hit the 5 percent threshold (41percent vs. 21 percent) and the percentage with 5percent or greater weight loss was still greater at month 12 (28 percent vs. 17 percent).
The average payout to participants in the rewards arm was S$225.00 ($153 USD). After subtracting the fee to access the rewards, third party costs were S$60.00 per participant. Moreover, although only 42 percent of participants earned more than they paid in, ~80% reported satisfaction with the rewards scheme.
Our findings not only show the value of rewards to increase weight loss and weight loss maintenance, but they show it can be done in a manner that minimizes third party payments, such as those by employers or insurers. This should help to expand access to these types of programs, says Finkelstein.
Even small amounts of weight loss, sustained over time, confer great health benefits and can help prevent chronic disease. This study shows that the enhancement and maintenance of weight loss is feasible through a rewards program with participant ownership, coupled with an evidence-based, medical weight loss program, says Kwang Wei Tham, director of the LIFE Centre and senior consultant in the endocrinology department at SGH.
The study appears in the journal Social Science and Medicine. The NUS Initiative to Improve Health in Asia supported the research. The Global Asia Institute of the National University of Singapore and the Glaxo Smith Kline-Economic Development Board (Singapore) Trust Fund coordinated the work.

Pokemon Go is a lovely thing. It provides exciting challenges, it gets your rump out of the house and its even benefited the globes many hardworking perverts! (That last one is more of a stay inside kind of thing.) One of the things attached to the rise of Pokemon Go during mobile games rise to cultural phenomenon status in 2016 was the potential health benefits of getting your knees in the breeze and enjoying the spin-off benefits of Pokemon-assisted exercise. Initial research of how the game could be a healthy plus painted an optimistic forecast, but a study published in the British Medical Journal suggests the exercise perks were just a fad.
As reported by the hoser hutch that is CBC News, researchers monitored 1,000 people users between the ages of 18 and 35 last summer and monitored their physical activity for six weeks. The initial results in the first week were promising. It was once that initial buzz wore off that the physical activity seemed to taper off too.
Childrens Hospital of Eastern Ontario research scientist Jean-Philippe Chaput noted to CBC that like a lot of exercise trends, theres struggle in having to continue through.
So yes, it worked for the first week, but then after a month and a half, people were not walking more or moving more.
I think people look for a quick fix, so they can lose weight quickly, Chaput said. We know that we have a lot of different kinds of diets and they dont work.
So it means that [Pokemon Go] fits with all of the other physical programs it works over the short term, but even after a month and a half it doesnt work well we can say that Pokemon Go is a fad as well.
Of course, thats not to say that there arent physical health benefits to playing Pokemon Go. Its just about a matter of consistency in maintaining the exercise end of things. With events and block parties being part of the 2017 Pokemon Go landscape theres more opportunities to embrace the physical and social aspects of the game. Just like pretty much any form of exercise, the benefits are what you make and take from them.

SALEM, Va. Camryn Dolby picked her high spots and worked through a lineup determined to bunt and run. Counterpart Cheyenne Van Pelt responded with a left-handed screwball that twisted away from bats.
The all-Loudoun Virginia 4A softball final between Woodgrove and Freedom-South Riding was a pitchers duel. After the heart of their lineup safely loaded the bases by mere inches, the Wolverines pushed home a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Then Dolby struck out the final three batters, and Woodgrove won, 2-0, at the Moyer Complex.
In their seventh straight state final, the Wolverines repeated as champions for the first time.
Everyone talked about how its inevitable that we were going to lose on odd years, senior Lexi Acton said. It was our goal to break the curse and be the seniors who did it.
Acton started Woodgroves final rally with a soft popup that dropped out of the air between a retreating shortstop and a charging center fielder. Next up, senior Emily Alexander directed a moving bunt down the first base line and sprinted safely to first.
I was bunting for a hit, the senior insisted.
After Dolby laid down a bunt and Acton beat the fielders choice throw to third, senior Jenna Dunn knocked a groundball to second base to score the games first run.
I wasnt trying to hit the fence or anything, just keep the ball on the ground, Dunn said.So happy I didnt ... pop out.
In Fridays semifinal, Van Pelt had ended the game with three strikeouts after the tying run reached second base.
Even after they loaded the bases, I still thought we could get three outs, Van Pelt said.I have all the confidence in my team.
Sophomore Maxine Barnes added an RBI single to score Alexander, but Dolby didnt need the insurance run, as she ended the game with her 15th strikeout. Sophomore Camryn Munroe produced Freedom-South Ridings lone hit on bunt that landed between the pitchers circle and second base in the second inning.
Woodgrove (24-0) cruised to last years title with a pair of double-digit wins in the state tournament. This time around, the Wolverines appreciated the challenge.
Last year we knew we were going to win in the first inning, Acton said.Today was so close with two great pitchers. Its more exciting to finish it off with a game like this.
Freedom South Riding (16-9) had never reached a softball state final. Van Pelt struck out six batters in her final game for the Eagles.
Before the season started, wed be in the weight room and coach would tell us were going to regionals at least, and wed laugh and say no way, Van Pelt said.Its still a great accomplishment that we even made it here.

The ketogenic diet, described as Atkins on steroids for its focus on foods high in fat and protein and low in carbohydrates, is growing in popularity but some nutritionists warn it may not live up to the hype.
The diets proponents say that it is the best way to lose weight without feeling hungry and that it increases energy levels. Celebrities including Kim Kardashian and Adriana Lima and athletes from LeBron James to Tim Tebow have all reportedly followed some form of low carb diets.
Absolutely this diet works, New York-based registered dietitian nutritionist Maya Feller told ABC News. It is going to give people weight loss.
The ketogenic, keto for short, diet was developed in the 1920s after it was noticed that after fasting, epileptics would experience a marked reduction in their seizures. The diet is designed to get your body into a state called ketosis where your body is so low on carbohydrates it starts burning fat for fuel.
Ketosis is also what the body does when fasting.
Keto dieters drastically cut carbohydrates to about 10 percent of their daily diet, which in some cases can be just 20 grams of carbohydrates per day.
That amount of carbohydrates is equivalent to one slice of white bread per day, according to Feller.
Nutritionists also stress that followers of a keto diet should get their fat intake from healthy fats like olive oils and nuts.
Samantha Kafedzic, 31, has lost 17 pounds since starting on a keto diet four weeks ago.
Kafedzic, who admits she now eats very different meals from her daughter, said she feels better overall in addition to the weight loss.
I have more energy with this one running around, Kafedzic said, pointing to her daughter. My workouts are so much better. I definitely have more stamina.
The key to being successful on the keto diet is getting about 20 percent of your calories from protein and eating lots of fat. For some keto followers, the amount of fat could equal more than 70 percent of their diet.
The amount of fat someone following the keto diet may consume in one day could be more than five times the recommended intake for daily fat for the average American, according to Feller.
The diets critics argue that it is nearly impossible to follow long-term, could lead to muscle loss and could deprive your brain of its preferred source of fuel, carbohydrates.
Feller agrees that the keto diet is not a diet she would recommend following for an extended period of time.
The jury is out on if that is safe for the long term, she said. What most studies say is that you can follow a ketogenic diet for some months. You dont want the body to stay in ketosis long term.

Comeys testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee captivated Washingtonon Thursday by providing his take on one-on-one conversations with the president.
The former FBI director said he took the president at his word that he had been fired for his handling of the investigation into Russias meddling in the election, including possible links to Trumps campaign. He also said he believed Trump had directed him to end an investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.
Comey stopped short of accusing Trump of obstructing justice, saying that determination is the purview of the current investigative team, being led by special counsel Robert Mueller, Comeys predecessor atop the FBI.

Comey also acknowledged in his testimony that he leaked through an intermediary his memo on a meeting with Trump that included the discussion about Flynn. That became an explosive story in The New York Times a week after his firing.
Pelosi rejected any suggestion that Comeys testimony vindicated the president. But Trumps approach to Comey, she quickly added, is consistent with his strategy as a longtime businessman.
He operates this way: First he tries to charm you. If that doesnt work, he tries to bully you. If that doesnt work, he walks away from the deal. And if that doesnt work, he sues you, she said.
According to CNN, Trumps outside attorney is poised to file a complaint with the Justice Department against Comey over the leak.
Hes true to form, true to his nature, Pelosi said.
Pelosi said Trump had acted deliberately to clear the room after a meeting before talking with Comey.
He knew that what he was doing was incriminating, and he didnt want any witnesses, she said.
But like Comey, Pelosi stopped short of charging Trump with obstructing justice. Trump has abused power, she said, but the deeper legal implications are still unclear.
Theres no question he abused power, she said. Whether he obstructed justice remains for the facts to come forward, and thats what we want are the facts.
Pelosi amplified Democrats long-held request that GOP leaders create an outside, independent panel akin to the 9/11 commission to step in with its own investigation of Russias election meddling.
We are limited, she said, by what the Republicans are willing to do.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Friday that President Trump "needs sleep" and she is "worried about his fitness" for office.
The California Democratmade the comments at her weekly news conference in response to questions from reporters about Trump's tweets firing back at former FBI James Comey for Comey's testimony Thursday before the Senate Intelligence Committee.
Pelosisaid no one at the White House appears to be "brave enough" to tell the president that his tweets are "beneath the dignity of the office you serve."
She also wondered about Trump's fitness for office.
"The president's fitness for office is something that has been called into question," she said. "I'm very worried about his fitness."
She said she doesn't know if anyone in the White House "has the courage" to try to make Trump be more disciplined about his actions and tweets.
"It's too bad because he needs work, and he needs sleep," Pelosi said.
Trump, who had refrained from tweeting during Comey's testimony Thursday,tweeted Friday that Comey vindicated him and accused the former director of improperly leaking details of their discussions. Trump abruptly fired Comey on May 9 in the midst of the FBI's investigation of Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential elections and possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian officials.
"Despite so many false statements and lies, total and complete vindication...and WOW, Comey is a leaker!" Trump tweeted.
Pelosi said Comey's testimony made it clear that Trump engaged in an abuse of power.
"I think he abused power," she said. "Whether he obstructed justice remains for the facts to come forward."
The Democratic leader also said the president'streatment of Comey mirrors how Trump behaved as a businessman. She said business leaders in New York who dealt with Trump in the past told her that Trump's pattern in trying to make a deal is to start off trying to charm his opponents, then threaten them if charm doesn't work, then walk away from the table if threats don't work, then sue them.
Two officials familiar with Trump's legal strategy said his lawyersplanto file a complaint aboutComey's leak with the Inspector General's office at the Department of Justice, and with the Senate Judiciary and Intelligence committees. The officials were not permitted to speak publicly about legal matters still under consideration.
Comey testified Thursday that he had leaked to the press, through a friend, memos describing his talks with Trump, saying he hoped the stories would spur the appointment of a special counsel to takeover the investigation of the Trump campaign's contacts with Russia. A special counsel, Robert Mueller, was appointed last month.

ST. PETERSBURG A treadmill at the LA Fitness at 5900 Fourth St. N caught fire overnight and caused minor fire and water damage to the gym, according to St. Petersburg Fire Rescue.
The treadmill caught fire for unknown reasons around 11 p.m. Wednesday night, said St. Petersburg Fire Rescue Lt. Steve Lawrence. The last employee had already left for the night.
The fire was discovered by an employee when they showed up for work around 5 a.m. Thursday. Two treadmills were destroyed, a window suffered minor damage and soot had spread throughout the building. The gym was also doused in water released by the automatic sprinkler system that was activated during the fire.
The damage left the gym closed Thursday. Lawrence said the LA Fitness was being cleaned up and it should be open again in two to three days.
The sprinklers likely saved the gym from more extensive damage, he said.
"The fire suppression system did do its job," he said. "It was limited fire damage. The water damage can be cleaned up."
