A NEW technique can lead to dramatic weight loss in just four months, research suggests.

Weight loss experts have revealed that a bizarre swallowable balloon could benefit millions of people tackling obesity.
A study found that obese people lost a whopping 2st 6lbs on average over a 16-week period.
The device, which makes people feel full, could even be used as an alternative to drastic weight-loss surgery.
The Elipse Balloon is fitted inside a capsule which can be easily swallowed with a drink of water and itdisintegrates and is safely excreted by the body after four months.

In the new study, presented at the European Congress on Obesity in Porto, Portugal, the balloon was given to 42 obese people (29 men and 13 women).
They had an average age of 46, a body mass index (BMI) of 39 and typically weighed just over 17st.
After four months, participants lost more than 14% of their total body weight (around a third of their excess weight).
The balloon, which costs around 3,400, is available in several countries around the world and privately in the UK. The NHS is investigating similar methods.
Lead study author Dr Roberta Ienca, from the University of Rome, said: "The reaction of patients is incredible.
They are very happy about the results they were able to achieve.

"During my daily phone contacts with my patients, they shared with me their pictures and the amount of weight they lost."
She said people were "very satisfied" with the results.
But the researchers also made sure to work with the patients to change their eating habits long-term.

Professor Jason Halford, treasurer of the European Association for the Study of Obesity, from the University of Liverpool, said the device helped people manage their appetite and modify their food intake.
He said: In that context, it could be a solution for people who don't want to go for full bariatric (weight-loss) surgery.
"With bariatric surgery, there are potential complications, it's a very permanent change in your life and it's not easily reversible.
"People are looking for alternatives."
Professor Jason said the balloon could also be used as an alternative to anti-obesity drugs and may even be useful for people who have found that drugs dont work.
"I think if studies are there and it's cost-effective I think it should be considered (on the NHS)," he added.
But Dr Simon Cork, from Imperial College London, warned that patients were likely to regain weight once the balloon was removed.
"Nevertheless, gastric balloons are still useful for some patients and the introduction of a device which doesn't require surgery to implant is a positive step forward," he said.

THERES a new type of boob jobon the block andthe procedure involves removingpart of a womans chest.
The area, known as bra bulge or bingo boobs, isthe crease ofskin between the breast and the armpit.

A bra or tight clothing squeezing the area usually causes the skinto spill outover the top.
Those with bigger boobs are especially susceptible and it can cause some women to feel self-conscious.
The folds are slightly different to bingo wings the folds of loose flesh that hang from the upper arm which can be toned up with arm strengthening exercises.
As for many, no matter how much exercise they do its tough to shift the pesky bulge.
Boob jobs were once the popular treatment for women at cosmetic surgeries, but now doctors claim more and more of their patients are asking to remove the unsightly flap of flesh.
Aesthetic doctor, Dr Galyna Selezneva, based at the Dr. Rita Rakus Clinic in Knightsbridgein London said she has seen a rise in these types of ops at her clinic.
She said: As women, we are constantly striving to look better.
To lose weight and get rid of that awkward little pocket of fat which despite spending many hours in the gym, just wont budge, ruining the perfect fit of our clothes.
Dr Galyna claims they use a revolutionary treatment to reduce the issue around the bra area.
SculpSure uses a laser light which passes safely through the skin and heats the underlying fat cells.
This triggers a process called apoptosis and leads tothe bodys natural elimination of fat cells causing the bulge to simply reduce away, she says.
Another process the clinic uses, known as ULTRAcel, uses radio frequency micro-needles.
Its a skin rejuvenation treatment which works on both the face and body by inducing collagen and tightening the skin.
Dr Galyna has also seen an increase in requests for treatments done on body parts such as elbows, knees, ankles and the armpits.

Falls can diminish your ability to lead an active and independent life. About one third of people over the age of 65 and almost half of people over the age of 80 will fall at least once this year. There usually are several reasons for a fall. Physical therapists can help you reduce your risk of falling by:
Assessing your risk of falling
Helping you make your home as safe as possible
Educating you about the medical risk factors linked to falls
Designing individualized exercises and balance training
Working with other health care professionals and community services to create programs for people who want to reduce their risk of falling
What Are Falls?

The reasons for falls are complex and include:
Being 80 years old or older
Leg muscle weakness
Difficulty with balance or walking
Vision problems (cataracts, macular degeneration, wearing bifocals)
Medical conditions that limit your ability to get around, such as Parkinson disease, stroke, or diabetes
Conditions that cause confusion, such as dementia and Alzheimer disease
Depression
Taking more than four medications at the same time or psychoactive medications (such as sedatives or antidepressants)
Using a cane or other walking device
Home hazards (throw rugs, pets underfoot)
Low blood pressure
The more risk factors you have, the greater your risk. The factors associated with the greatest fall risk are:
A history of previous falls
Balance problems
Leg muscle weakness
Vision problems
Taking more than four medications or psychoactive medications
Difficulty with walking
How can a physical therapist help?
If you are worried about falling or if you recently had a fall, your physical therapist can conduct a brief check ("screening") of your fall risk. If the screening shows that you are at risk, the therapist will perform a thorough evaluation, including:
A review of your medical history
A review of your medications
A simple vision tests
A home safety assessment
A simple screen of your thinking abilities
A check of your heart rate
Blood pressure measurements while you change positions (from sitting to standing)
Feet and footwear assessment
Assessment of any nervous system disorders, such as stroke or Parkinson disease
The therapist also will:
Measure your leg strength, using simple tests such as timing how long it takes you to risk from a chair
Determine how quickly and steadily you walk
Assess your balance for instance, by having you stand on one leg or rise from a chair and walk
Use special tests to measure your balance
Based on the evaluation results, your physical therapist will design an exercise and training program to improve your balance and strength. A recent systematic review of many published studies found that exercise-based programs in the home or in group settings are effective in preventing falls. These programs are especially effective when balance exercises are performed in a standing position without using much arm support.
Balance Training
Balance training has been shown to be an important and effective part of falls prevention. Your physical therapist will design exercises that challenge your ability to keep your balance, including such exercises as single-leg standing.
Walking and Moving
When people walk very slowly or are unsteady, they are at risk of falling. Your physical therapist can improve your walking ability by having you do such activities as:
Dance steps
Walking in circles
"Figure 8" exercises to strengthen the core abdominal muscles that help stabilize your body
Obstacle courses
Doing More Than One Thing at the Same TimeSafely
Older adults who have difficulty walking and talking at the same time are at a higher risk of falling. To help increase your safety during daily activities, your physical therapist can design a "dual-task" training program. This kind of training will challenge you to maintain walking speed while you do another task, such as counting backwards, engaging in a conversation, or carrying a bag of groceries.
Strength Training
Strengthening exercises are a key element of fall prevention when they are done in conjunction with balance training. Your physical therapist will design strengthening exercises that focus on your leg and the muscles used in maintaining posture.
Aerobic Training
Aerobic exercise is physical exercise of relatively low intensity and long duration; it can help improve almost every aspect of your health. Walking is one of the safest forms of aerobic exercise, no matter what kind of problem you have. Once you have begun your strengthening and balance program, your physical therapist will know when you're ready to start aerobic exercise. Depending on your ability, the therapist might have you do three 30-minute walking sessions each week.
Education
Your physical therapist will take the time to explain to you how to best manage your own risks for falling. Your therapist also may talk to you about the best activities for you to do to maintain your quality of life.
Fear Management
It will be important for you to talk with your physical therapist about any fear of falling that you have. Your therapist will work with you to determine whether there are activities you should avoid. Your therapist also will work with you to determine whether your fear may be unfounded and whether there are activities that you should be doing to keep strong and help your balance.
Community Programs
Several fall prevention programs are being promoted by the Injury Prevention and Control Center of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in collaboration with the Administration on Aging. These programs help people:
Reduce their fear of falling
Set goals for increasing their physical activity
Make their homes more safe
Do more exercise to increase strength and balance
Your physical therapist may be involved in setting up one of these programs and can help you find programs in your area that would be best for you. #choosePT

When I think of how many years I avoided the senior center, I am ashamed of myself and especially as I have been learning and writing about the Changing Aging Tour: Lifes Most Dangerous Game that is coming to Patriot Place next Thursday (June 15). Every one of us should be there, because its going to be an exciting program and we can contribute so much to it with our upbeat and forward looking outlooks.
My first thought was that our senior center is so far ahead of the game. I, who was very very hesitant to get involved with those older people, now find myself almost furious when I talk about a trip or something Im doing at the center and get a reply like OH, I never realized they did ... whatever.
While we are on the cutting edge in so many ways, including the cross-section of exercise programs and community dinners, outside speakers, old time movies, and even the latest being a memory caf, we still have some ideas and contributions to make. Our most common complaints seem to be transportation and wanting to stay in our home and our town thus developing our own Angie type list.
I have been reading tons of information on Dr. Bill Thomas innovative approach to aging and the tremendous strides he is making along with Savan Petersons input in making these changes happen.
Dr. Thomas is really looking to improve things for us, but more important is asking us to make life better for all the baby boomers who are not may years away from this step of adulthood. Why not share the good ideas we have and also pick the brains of others to improve this period in our lives today?
I love the caf. It seems free for the most part of negativity. Talk could be about gardening nutrition, some place we are going to be traveling ... all positive and upbeat. If you are looking for a doctor or place for physical therapy that comes in also. What better way to start my day with exercise and then some socialization at the caf We seem to laugh at ourselves.
So bottom line, you will see I have written a news story giving all the information in a short news story that includes the essential informationbut I could personalize my thoughts (although many journalists do so today ... what I oppose) and I want to scream This program is absolutely fantastic! We just shouldnt miss it.
(If I am wrong, I will invite everyone to my house for lunch, drinks etc. and write a public apology like I did after I took my first trip with the seniors to Texas)

ROCHESTER and district cancer sufferers have access to a program using the latest research right in their backyard.
Recent research suggests exercise is beneficial for most people during treatment as it can help manage some of the common side effects of treatment, speed up return to usual activities and improve quality of life.
Rochester and Elmore District Health Service (REDHS) are working with accredited exercise physiologist, Sophie Beavis, to offer professional exercise advice to support people having cancer treatment to be as physically active as their abilities and conditions allow.
REDHS primary care manager Sam Campi said its an outstanding opportunity which supports patients to stay in their local community.
There are two phases of the burden of cancer; the illness itself and the burden of travel taking the pressure off families and income to keep patients in their community for just one appointment can make a lot of difference as most people have to travel to Bendigo for treatment.
We want to get the word out and let people know this service is available and comes at no extra cost to the patient. The way to get involved is to talk to your oncologist and general practitioner to see if its something you could benefit from and get a referral to see Sophie.
This service is also provided at Kyabram District Health Service and Echuca Regional Health, consisting of a six-month trial project funded by Loddon Mallee Integrated Cancer Services (LMICS).
Sophie will work with oncology teams and allied health staff at the health services to ensure safe exercise plans are tailored to the individual.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork)Do you have 10 or 20 pounds to lose that you cant seem to shake?
Theres a new FDA-approved procedure that might help you do just that, and it involves swallowing balloons.
As CBS2s Dr. Max Gomez reports, there have been previous balloon techniques for weight loss, but they required sedation and putting a scope into the stomach. This new version requires no surgery or anesthesia and no real down time.
Its not meant for the morbidly obese, its meant for losing those really tough 15 pounds.

Like so many people, she has been on a weight loss seesaw for decades.
Ive tried pills, shakes, everything else and just nothing worked, Soto says.
But in the last month, shes dropped more than 15 pounds.
Its stupidly amazing, Soto says.
Whats finally helped her to slim down?
Its actually the first swallowable balloon, Dr. Anthony Starpoli says.
Thats right, Soto swallowed not one, not two, but three balloons as part of a brand new weight loss technique thats seeing tremendous results.
At one year, youre looking at almost 7 percent total body weight loss, Starpoli says.
CBS2 was there as Soto swallowed the last of the deflated balloons, which was attached to a small catheter.
As she swallowed a few times, the capsule containing the balloon made its way into the stomach. Then, Starpoli used a special device to fill the balloon with gas. After, he detached and pulled out the inflating tube. In the post-procedure X-ray, you can see all three of Sotos balloons.
Its a combination of inducing a feeling of satiety, as well as eliminating otherwise room for more food, Starpoli says.
The average weight loss in the clinical trial for the Obalon system was 15 pounds. Soto has already lost that with just two balloons. Many people lose 20 to 30 pounds will all three balloons.
After six months, another minor procedure deflates and removes all the balloons.
Its important to note that 89 percent of patients at one year maintained the weight loss, Starpoli says.
Its all worth it! Soto adds.
But maintaining that weight loss depends very much on a comprehensive program of nutrition and eating counseling, because you can out-eat any operation, Dr. Max reports.
In addition to weight loss, balloon patients reduced important health risks, including blood sugar and blood pressure.
The cost is about $9,000, which includes the nutrition counseling, but its general not covered by insurance.

Some think that weightlifting will make them bulky which isn't true and others don't think that pushing around some weight in the gym will help them lose a few pounds. But the truth? Strength training will definitely help you lose weight and is an integral part of how you can shape your body into the lean, fit machine you've always wanted! How does it work? What do you really have to do? What can you expect? Wow, you've got a lot of questions! Good thing we have all the answers!
Have you ever heard the phrase "the more muscle you have, the more fat you'll burn"? No? Well, trust us when we say it's definitely true. Let's look at the science: the body expends energy (calories) just to maintain muscle, and the more you have, the more energy your body needs to maintain it. What does that mean for you? Just having muscle burns calories, and having more muscle means burning even more calories. You may not think you'll be using a significant amount of energy and that you won't have a significant caloric loss just by building muscle, but it's enough to make a noticeable difference, as stated in many studies.
And if you think that you'll only be burning calories when you're actually using those new muscles, you're dead wrong. According to certified personal trainer Heather Neff, "You'll be burning fat while you sleep just for the fact that you have muscle to maintain." To put it simply, building muscles can help raise your resting metabolism.
First off, you have to know one simple fact: strength training might actually make you gain weight. Let me explain before you freak out. Weight is a vague term typically used to describe how much a person actually weighs and frequently has little to do with your health or fitness levels.
According to Neff, "If you were to take five pounds of muscle and five pounds of fat, place them both in a bucket and compare the two side by side, the fat will take up a significant amount of room while the muscle takes up very little, yet they still weight the exact same. That's because fat cells are large, light, and fluffy, while muscle fibers are small and very dense."
So don't freak out when you step on the scale after a few weeks. Instead, revel in the glory of how well you fit in those new jeans!
If you're trying to lose weight, then a good mix of cardio and strength training is the best plan. That's right, you can't just stop doing cardio but at least you won't have to keep doing endless sessions on the treadmill. And if you double up, you should keep that cardio for after the weights. Why? "Strength training before cardio because cardio can deplete your body of energy and set you up for injury," Neff said. "Especially if you are going to be lifting heavier weights." If you can't see yourself doing strength training and cardio in the same workout, do your cardio on off days or in other venues (go for a walk, play a sport, or even take up LARP'ing look it up! It's hilarious, geeky fun).
How often should you be strength training? Neff offers this advice: "Do your strength training three to four days per week and make sure you're not doing it back to back, especially if you're doing a full-body routine always give yourself a day in between training for the muscles to recover and grow."
