Diem Brown remembered at fitness fundraiser – Page Six

Diem Browns birthday was celebrated just how she would have wanted it.

Diem loved working out, jumping around to music and spending time with friends, which is exactly what we did last night, her sister Megan told Page Six of Monday nights fundraiser at New Yorks Rumble Boxing.

The vibe was just amazing and really just so Diem, she added of the sold-out event, held in honor of what would have been Diems 37th birthday on June 12.

Diem, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at the age of 22, passed away in November 2014 at the age of 34. Parts of her health battle was captured on MTV cameras during her time on reality shows including MTVs Real World/Road Rules Challenge.

This weeks fitness event raised approximately $7,000 for MedGift, a foundation started by the reality star that acts as a wish list for patients and families going through illness or trauma, Megan explained. Tickets ranged from $100 to $500 and attendees were a mix of family, friends and people who worked with Diem through MTV or MedGift.

It was incredible, Rumble Boxing instructor Noah Neiman told us. We went from feeling the loss and sadness and used that as a tool to be positive and to be stronger and work harder because thats what Diem would have wanted and thats what I saw throughout the class.

Neiman, who led the class, knew Diem for about six years during his time as a trainer at Barrys Bootcamp. He said she would take back-to-back classes before heading to chemotherapy. She was like the true definition of a fighter If you didnt know her, you wouldnt have known she was going through this, he said.

During the event, he shared stories of his time working with Diem and played one of her favorite songs, Heart of the Champion, to close out the class.

Bethesda’s Fitness First Gym To Close – BethesdaMagazine.com

Landlord plans to terminate lease to make way for redevelopment

By Joe Zimmermann

Published: 2017.06.06 12:37

Downtown Bethesda gym Fitness First will close at the end of this month.

The fitness clubs president announced the closing to members in an email Monday.

The gym at 7900 Wisconsin Ave. will shut its doors June 30 to make way for expected redevelopment. Developer JBG Companies, the landlord of the property, has long planned a 17-story, 475-unit apartment building at the site.

Fitness First originally planned to remain in its location until its lease expired in 2019 and even looked at expanding in the same building. However, Peter Harvey, president of Fitness First, wrote that the gym was informed last week JBG would end the lease sooner.

We received formal notification from JBG, that they intend on terminating our lease to commence their redevelopment efforts, Harvey wrote in an email to members. It is no longer financially feasible to continue to fight their efforts to redevelop sooner, and so we are sad to announce the closing.

The redevelopment project received preliminary approval from the Montgomery County Planning Board in 2013 before the developer put the project on hold in 2015.

The closing marks the end of an era for a local gym chain. Fitness First, which was founded in Silver Spring, was acquired by Golds Gym in 2013 and 17 of its 18 locations were sold to the fitness company. The Bethesda gym is its last remaining location. The last group classes and child care sessions will be held Sunday.

This is a sad time for all of us here at Fitness First, as it is the final chapter for our company, Harvey wrote.

Collision occurred near Greenwich Park

The following crimes were reported to Montgomery County or Rockville police from May 15 to 23

Kindhearted Home Care’s fitness center to offer fitness classes – Merrillfotonews

Kindhearted Home Care owner Diane Goetsch (left) and Exercise Physiologist Ashley Millenbah

Jeremy Ratliff Reporter

Last Friday afternoon, Kindhearted Home Care (KHC) of Merrill announced yet another expansion of services. According to facility owner Diane Goetsch, in addition to the new health and fitness center which recently celebrated its 1 year anniversary, the center will now be offering wellness classes at the center. Two of the classes will start yet this month; Chair Yoga and Stable and Strong. The classes will be led by Merrill native and recent UW-Oshkosh graduate Ashley Millenbah. As Millenbah explains, Chair Yoga is a gentle form of Yoga practiced sitting on a chair for support, which reduces strain on limbs and joints. The chair acts as an extension of your body, allowing you to take full advantage of the exercises. Chair yoga provides the same benefits as traditional yoga, which include increases in strength, balance, flexibility, and body awareness. Additional benefits include, improved stress and pain management as well as mental clarity. This class is great for people of all ages and ability levels, including those who utilize a wheelchair. Stable and Strong is class aiming to improve strength and balance, by using a variety of fitness tools such as dumbbells, resistance bands and balance discs. Exercises are performed sitting and standing behind a chair or with a chair in reach at all times for additional support, if necessary. Including a strength and balance regimen into your exercise routine allows for building strength, maintaining bone density, improving balance, coordination and mobility as well as reducing risk of falls. This class is ideal for people who are looking to maintain independence at home and increase their day to day confidence. Millenbah holds a Bachelors Degree in Kinesiology as well as certification as an Exercise Physiologist through the American College of Sports Medicine. She is also certified in CPR, AED (Automated External Defibrillator) and First Aid. According to Goetsch, the idea of expanding KHC arose upon receiving an unexpected phone call from Millenbah in April. Ashley contacted me as she was graduating college in April. She indicated she was interested in coming back to the Merrill area and inquired if there was an employment opportunity available with my health and fitness programs, I had read an article on the Merrill Foto News Facebook page about Diane and Kindhearteds one year anniversary in April, Ashley adds. I was curious if she may be interested in expanding her existing health and wellness programs and she happened to be interested. My degree and education is focused on health and fitness. I saw a need for these types of classes in the Merrill area and I was interested in working with seniors. The pair plan to incorporate additional classes at KHC in the near future and would like to welcome participants of all ages to take advantage of KHCs wide array of programs and services. group exercise classes end of June, adding additional classes for all ages at all ability levels. Diane and Ashley can be reached at Kindhearted Home Cares Health and Fitness Center during regular business hours of 8 AM-7 PM (Mon-Thu) and 8 AM-5PM on Fridays, at 715-218-3772.

Obese woman SHAMED into losing weight you won’t believe what … – Daily Star

CHARLOTTE BURGESS was shamed into losing weight after posting a mortifying holiday snap on Facebook.

PHOTO-FEATURES

After being tagged in a less-than-flattering photo, Charlotte Burgess lost an impressive 7st in just 10 months.

The photo, taken of her wearing a swimming costume, reduced Charlotte to tears and she demanded her boyfriend Danny delete it from Facebook.

This prompted the mother-of-one to go from 18st and a UK size 22 to 11st and a UK size 10.

The 25-year-old said: Ive never looked or felt better, and in building my self-esteem I have saved my relationship.

PHOTO-FEATURES

Charlottes weight gain began when she became pregnant in 2015 and in just four months she had piled on 3st.

This meant Charlotte had to be induced and have her son early as she was too obese to carry him full-term.

I was anxious because we have a history of miscarriage in the family. I told myself it was good to eat for two, but I was eating for four at least, Charlotte admitted.

I was too tired to cook after work so I always got a takeaway and Danny would come home with a large bar of chocolate to make me smile.

My midwife told me I was now clinically obese. I was ashamed but I just ate more to feel better.

My blood pressure and blood sugar was through the roof.

PHOTO-FEATURES

High-protein, low-carbohydrate diets are all the rage right now and for good reason. Protein is an important component of every cell in the body. Hair and nails are mostly made of protein and your body uses protein to build and repair tissues.

Because of her high sugar intake, this led to gestational diabetes and at her five month scan the sonographer raised concerts about the size of her baby.

By 37 weeks, Charlotte was 18st 5st heavier than she was at the start of her pregnancy.

The baby, Harley, was a healthy 8lb when born, and even after birth Charlotte fell into a vicious cycle of takeaways and convenience food from being too tired to cook while looking after a newborn.

This caused Charlotte to shy away from mothers groups because of her weight, and her and Danny didnt have sex for five months after the baby was born.

PHOTO-FEATURES

After Charlotte saw the photo on Facebook, this was the motivation she needed to change and she signed up to the Cambridge Weight Plan.

Within five weeks, she was down 2st: I knew it was so important to get Harley on healthy foods from the start so while I was steaming broccoli for me I was pureeing it for Harley.

Finally I felt like a good mum leading by example.

Working Out and Still Not Losing Weight? A Dietitian Says This Is Why – POPSUGAR

You've been exercising on the regular, doing cardio and strength training, but your body hasn't really changed. What the f*ck gives? It can be so insanely frustrating that you're working so hard for what seems like nothing, but unfortunately, just because you exercise doesn't automatically mean weight will fall off you and reveal toned arms, toned legs, and a flat belly.

What you eat directly impacts whether or not you'll lose weight, and certified dietitian Leslie Langevin, MS, RD, CD, of Whole Health Nutrition, says the number one reason she sees people working out and not losing weight is because they're eating too many calories a day. Aside from exercise boosting appetite, there's "the rationale that you worked out so you deserve to have a treat or more food!"

Leslie says to lose weight, you need to create a calorie deficit. If you walk for 60 minutes or run for 30 minutes, which burns about 300 calories, and you suck down a 300-calorie post-workout protein smoothie, you haven't created a calorie deficit you're just coming up even at the end of the day.

Leslie suggests using a calorie-counting app like MyFitnessPal to determine your recommended daily calorie intake, putting in that you want to lose one pound per week in the settings so you're not cutting out too much. "Then when you exercise, add in the exercise calories but only eat back half," so if you burn 300 calories working out, only eat back 150 calories.

What you eat is important, too. Leslie suggests focusing on more protein, more fiber, and fewer refined carbs and sugar. Basically aim to eat healthy most of the time, prevent overeating by eating until you're satisfied but not stuffed (80 percent full), and drink lots of water.

The kind of workouts you do also matters. A light walk three times a week isn't going to budge the scale. If you're trying to lose weight, fitness instructor John Kersbergen says, "The most efficient way to get results is to do some form of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) for a total-body workout and to focus on strength training certain body parts (upper body, lower body, core) on different days of the week." We're talking 45-minute sessions three to four times per week. You'll not only burn calories from the actual workout, but the muscle mass you're building will help to burn extra calories as well.

Sewing Machine’ Surgery Helps Weight Loss Without Cutting – NBCNews.com

Jaheidi Fonseca, 31, lost weight using an innovative new, surgery-free procedure to make her stomach smaller. Courtesy Jaheidi Fonseca

It's like a glorified sewing machine, says gastroenterologist Dr. Reem Sharaiha of New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, who led the study.

There are a series of sutures going from one part of the stomach to the bottom of the stomach all the way to the top. No scars, no cuts. You are asleep, like going to the dentist to pull your teeth out.

Her team found that the accordion procedure helped patients, on average, lose 17.6 percent of their weight and nearly 27 inches from around their waists. The BMIs of the 91 patients who underwent the procedure between 2013 and 2016 decreased from 40.7 considered morbidly obese to a BMI of 32. The results were published in the May Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

The minimally invasive, non-surgery procedure involves using an endoscopic tube with a camera attached that goes down the mouth into the esophagus and lets a gastroenterologist see inside the stomach.

Related:

The doctors sews stitches in the stomach to pull it tight and make it smaller without making any cuts. Over time a patient's weight loss can plateau, but doctors can go back and re-tighten the stomach--leading to more pounds shed.

New York resident Jaheidi Fonseca, 31, was having trouble losing weight after having three children. Two-years ago Fonseca tipped the scale at 219 pounds, trying everything from diet pills to protein shakes to shed the weight without success.

It was incremental, after I had my first child I gained weight that never came off, having two other children I just kept gaining and harder for me to lose, Fonseca, a medical technician, told NBC News. I wasn't on the right track to start losing weight."

After seeing her fellow colleagues lose weight, Fonseca met with a gastroenterologist who recommended the endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG), also called the accordion procedure.

Obesity, defined as a body mass index (BMI) over 30, affects 78.6 million Americans -- more than one-third of U.S. adults, according to the National Institutes of Health.

This procedure is meant for people with type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, unhealthy cholesterol and a BMI of less than 40.

Related:

The study's early results show that the accordion procedure is safe, effective and less expensive than surgery for people who have been unable to lose weight through lifestyle changes, said Dr. Stacy Brethauer, president of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, who was not involved in the study.

"While it may not be as effective as surgery, it has fewer complications and may be the ideal treatment for patients with less severe obesity," said Brethauer. "Like any weight loss treatment, endoscopic procedures should be done as part of a multidisciplinary weight management program that can help each patient determine the best option for them."

Dr. Scott Kahan, a weight loss expert at the Obesity Society and George Washington University Medical Center, sees promise in the procedure since it can be offered to a wider group of people. This procedure includes patients with BMI over 30, whereas traditional bariatric surgery is usually only offered to people with a BMI of at least 35, Kahan, who was also not involved in the study, told NBC News.

Related:

Currently, the procedure costs between $10,000-$15,000 and insurance coverage is limited. However, with more studies coming in, the accordion procedure could be covered. One limiting factor is accessibility, since approximately 25 centers in the U.S. currently perform this procedure, Sharaiha said.

After the 40-minute procedure, Fonseca went home the same day and the pounds came off and continued to drop. She lost nearly 60 pounds and found the stamina to start exercising and eating better.

You see the weight loss right away, Fonseca said. Three days later you start feeling different and you start seeing changes little by little, day by day. You just lose more and that's the best thing the best feeling ever. I wanted to make a change for me.

Dr. Jacqueline Paulis, an emergency medicine resident physician in New York City and a medical fellow for NBC News, also contributed to this report.
