Changing lives through fitness: Phoenix Multisport helps those recovering from addiction – The Denver Channel

DENVER - Whether it's weight loss or a healthier routine, the gym is often a place where people go to make a change in their life. But what about turning a life around? On ChampaStreet in the heart of downtown Denver, that is the mission of Phoenix Multisport.
"I was a heroin addict," gym member Dan Vandenberg said.
Dan is like every other person that walks through Phoenix's front door, in one way or another. It is a sober community for those recovering from substance use disorder, commonly called addiction.
"If you spent a lot of your adolescence and adult life drinking and drugging, and then you get clean and sober, what are you going to do with that time?" the gym's founder Scott Strode said.
The gym offers crossfit, boxing, weight lifting, yoga, and fitness classes every day of the week. It is open and free to anyone who is trying to get or stay clean. The main rule?
"Having 48 hours of continuous sobriety," Vandenberg said.
"You might do therapy and treatment and a 12 step program but finding the supportive network of people you find in here," Strode said, "I kind of think about it like finding a new tribe that supports you in your recovery."
Rich Shock found that tribe. He was an addict, homeless on the streets of Denver. Until he found Phoenix.
"It's a sense of community. There's a certain energy and power here when we engage in this together we're not just pushing out bodies we're pushing each other, supporting each other," Shock said.
The Navy veteran is now one of a group of vets that comes here weekly.
"I love walking through the door. The smiles, the hugs, the fun competition we have with each other," he said. "It's like an oasis in the desert of sickness in a way."
You'll find many of the people that come here to work out wearing shirts reading 'sober' or 'Phoenix.' The name has an important meaning.
"The story of the phoenix rising from the ashes, that is a story that so many people in recovery from substance use disorder connect with," Scott Strode said.
That includes the founder himself. Strode found himself using and abusing drugs in his twenties. Until he found a boxing gym and turned his life around. Eventually he opened his own gym.
Ten years later, Strode has spread Phoenix to five states, and helped over 20,000 people with free recovery support programs. People like Dan Vandenberg.
"I come to the gym because this place saved my life."

Stroke rehabilitation and exercise – Chadds Ford Live

Just when youre at your lowest after suffering a stroke, youll be asked to do some of the hardest things youve ever done in your life. The road to recovery includes a significant amount of rehabilitation. Youll undergo physical therapy to regain gross motor skills such as walking and maintaining your balance. Occupational therapy will help you relearn how to perform everyday tasks like eating and bathing yourself. Speech therapy supports your ability to communicate, and psychological counseling will help you deal with the emotional stress.
At the top of the list of tough challenges will be incorporating exercise into your recovery. New research shows that exercise may be one of the most important parts of your recovery not just for your body, but for your mind as well.
What the Research Shows About Exercise After Stroke
Doctors and therapists have long known that exercise is helpful after a stroke, but an analysis of several research studies provides more insight into what exercise actually works best specifically the type of exercise and the duration.
The biggest takeaway from the analysis is that exercise after a stroke is good not only for the body but for the brain as well. In the simplest terms, a stroke cuts off blood supply to the brain. It can impair cognition, which includes vital mental processes such as thinking, memory, understanding, and learning.
This new research shows that people who exercise after a stroke show greater improvements in cognition than people who do not exercise. And the good news is, that exercise does not need to be intense: Walking on a treadmill at a slow pace was enough to provide a benefit.
The people who have the most significant improvements in cognition after stroke combine this type of moderate aerobic exercise with strength and balance exercises. They see benefits in their working memory, mental processing speed, and attention.
While most people who suffer a stroke will be encouraged to start an exercise program early in the recovery process, the research showed the benefits were seen even if exercise started much later. Stroke patients who began exercising 2.5 years after their stroke still saw benefits in cognition. Additionally, the exercise program did not have to last long; programs that lasted four to 12 weeks were just as effective as longer-term regimens.
Exercise Is Only Part of the Equation
The holistic approach that brings together exercise with other forms of therapy are all important parts of the stroke recovery process. Equally important is making lifestyle changes that may help to ward off another stroke in the future.
These changes should include controlling medical conditions such as atrial fibrillation, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and obesity. You should also make sure that you get the recommended amount of exercise (when and if youre physically able), and make changes to your diet including cutting back on the amount of alcohol you drink to reduce your risks.
Keep in mind that if you or someone you love has suffered a stroke, its critical to maintain hope and a positive outlook. Your rehabilitation team will be working hard to help you live a happy, independent, and healthy life.

The Grapefruit Diet is a quick and effortless way to drop weight, at the same time as rising in general health and wellness. Recognized in the 1930s as the Hollywood Diet, the Grapefruit Diet has been called a fashion diet by many. The theory behind the grapefruit diet is simple enough. The fruit, it is claimed, contains an enzyme that actually helps you burn fat. However, a revise in 2004 by Dr Ken Fuijioka and the nourishment and Metabolic Research Center at Scripps Clinic establish that there was a physically powerful association between the use of grapefruit at each meal and weight failure. Grapefruit diet could be said to be one of the offshoots of the modern generations obsession with losing weight and appearing attractive. This has propelled the fame of the Grapefruit Diet owing to its ease and efficiency.
The Grapefruit Diet consists of overwhelming either half a grapefruit or a goblet of grapefruit juice before each serving of food. The good information is that grapefruits are low down in calories and sodium, and has been exposed to reduce cholesterol levels and the danger of rising diabetes. Needless to say, a balanced diet consisting of all the essential nutrients is needed for sustaining good health.

The use of grapefruit reduces the level of insulin in the body, which in turn is vital in the blood sugar and fat metabolism directive processes. This allows you to procedure the power from your expenditure, and the margining in grapefruits block the uptake of fatty acids, ornamental weight loss instead of fat storage. The key to keep in mind in the Grapefruit Diet is to diminish utilization of insulin.
A smallest amount use of 8 classes of wet a day is wanted, and having a cup of coffee is allowable but not confident as it obstructs the weight defeat procedure. The grapefruit is vital in the diet as it boot starts the fat burning procedure. However, nutritionists advise against this kind of fad diet, because a diet based on only fruit is considered nutritionally unsound. Work out is also not confident at what time you are on the diet as the near to the ground calorie intake does not give enough energy to hold up your just behavior.
A universal Grapefruit Diet weight failure menu consists of bacon and eggs in the daybreak, and serving of meat and salads for lunch and dinner You can, for instance, take a healthy helping of grapefruit, but along with other essential nutrients which are not found in the fruit. It also includes a not obligatory previous to bed snack, such as a goblet of milk or tomato juice.
All these meals are proceed with either semi a grapefruit, or an 8oz glass of unsweetened grapefruit juice. Fat To Fit: How To Lose Weight Fast, Without The Diet Pills

Every year, dieters are bombarded with fad diets, diet pills, and fat-burning clothing filled with promises of quick and easy weight loss. However, these extreme dieting trends are just a temporary fix to your desired body image goal. Rather than surrender your body to an all-or-nothing approach, you can lose the weight fast and safely, without compromising your health.
The basis of any diet plan starts with counting calories. The estimated amount of calories needed to maintain energy balance varies with gender and age. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the recommended calorie intake for women aged 19 to 51 years ranges from 1,800 to 2,000 calories a day. Meanwhile, men aged 19 to 51 years require even more, between 2,200 to 2,400 calories per day. Depending on your lifestyle, you may require more calories if you want to gain weight or vice versa.
Rachel Pires, a weight loss advisor and the author of the book Diet Enlightenment, believes the fastest way for dieters to shed pounds is to follow a calorie-restricted diet. By learning to cut calories (focus on foods that are high in bulk and low in calories) dieters can follow a style of eating that they can stick to for life, she told Medical Daily in an email.
Its no surprise you should consume fewer calories for weight loss, but just exactly how?
Diet and exercise are two vital factors in the formula for weight loss as youre told to eat less and move more. Eating less of particular foods, specifically sugars and starches, is one of the first steps to achieve your weight loss goals. These foods are known to stimulate the secretion of insulin, which is the main fat storage hormone in the body.
Typically, insulin has a lowering effect on HSL (hormone-sensitive lipase) levels, encouraging fat storage. Cutting back on simple sugars will lead to a decrease in insulin levels. According to Kevin Meehan, a holistic practitioner and founder of Meehan Formulations in Jackson, Wyo., when our insulin levels are low, HSL increases, creating a "withdrawal" of fat from the fat cells. "As we can see, keeping the insulin levels low will help utilize our stored fats, creating weight loss," he explained to Medical Daily in an email.
Lower levels of insulin means the fat is able to get out of the fat stores, which leads the body to start burning fat instead of carbs. Moreover, the kidneys will be able to shed excess sodium and water from the body, since insulin levels and fluid retention are correlated. A 2007 study published in the journal Renal Physiology, found the decrease in insulin levels led the participants kidneys to retain less sodium and water, reducing both body fat and water weight.
Cut out your sugars and starches to add more protein and vegetables to your diet. This formula helps you meet the recommended range of grams of carbs to consume in one day. For example, adults on a diet will consume between 1,200 to 1,600 calories, which means they have to aim between 135 grams to 195 grams a day on a 1,200-calorie diet and 180 grams of carbs a day on a 1,600-calorie diet. Carb consumption should not surpass 260 grams a day.
Meat, fish and seafood, and eggs are among the best sources of protein to help you meet your weight loss goals. Eggs are the ideal food to eat in the morning for losing weight, without feeling famished. A 2008 study published in the International Journal of Obesity found the egg breakfast was more likely to enhance weight loss when combined with an energy-deficit diet, but it does not induce weight loss otherwise. After eight weeks, dieters who ate eggs for breakfast experienced 65 percent more weight loss than the bagel group and saw a 61 percent greater reduction in body mass index (BMI).
Consuming the right amount of protein at meals and snacks will help balance blood sugar and stabilize energy levels. Lauren Harris-Pincus, a registered dietitian nutritionist, explained to Medical Daily this helps to curb cravings by managing hunger, while protein helps to delay digestion so you feel satisfied for longer. Her weight loss tip: Fill half of your plate with veggies at each meal. They are low in calories and packed with nutrients our bodies need. The fiber will fill you up so you have less room for more calorie dense foods, Harris-Pincus said.
Every good diet plan is accompanied by a good exercise plan. Losing weight and keeping it off are two distinct things dieters often struggle with. Going to the gym to lift weights will help you burn calories and speed up your metabolism. It helps maintain your lean muscle mass and leads to a higher metabolic rate. Shane Allen, a certified personal trainer, sports nutritionist, and weight loss specialist, told Medical Daily in an email: Each pound of muscle you have, takes six calories per day to maintain itself. Fat only needs two calories per day. The more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism.
Gaining muscle while losing a lot of body fat is possible even if youre on a low-carb diet. A 2002 study published in the journal Metabolism found a carb-restricted diet does lead to a significant reduction in fat mass and is connected to an increase in lean body mass. The researchers believe this is most likely mediated by the decrease in insulin levels.
Calorie counting, cutting sugar and starches, adding protein and veggies, and exercise are part of the weight loss formula, but is there anything else you can do?
Controlling your eating behavior can be as simple as changing your plate size. We tend to eat with our eyes first. A large plate can establish an optical illusion that lead to inaccurate estimates of serving size. It can make a serving of food appear smaller, while smaller plates can lead you to misjudge the same quantity of food as being significantly larger. For example, a 2006 study published in FASEB Journal found when children and adults served themselves in large plates or bowls, there were more food contents served compared to those given a smaller plate.
Small plates can really help you see what portion control really is.
People who lose weight gradually and steadily lose about 1 to 2 pounds per week and are more successful at keeping the weight off. However, those on a 1,050- to 1,200-calorie diet who eat less and move more, can lose 3 to 5 pounds in the first week. You can center your weight loss rate based on the amount of calories you consume and burn.
Weight loss should be effective and safe, and it starts with exercising and cutting calories.

Marysville to consider ‘road diet’ for Huron Blvd. – Port Huron Times Herald

Marysvilles Huron Boulevard could look a little different after its reconstruction begins next year, and officials hope the change will calm the roadways traffic.
The city is planning a three-phase rebuild of the roadway between M-29 andGratiot Boulevard at a cost of roughly $1.8 million. Construction is expected to start in 2018 and last two years.
The project, however, would not only reconstruct the road, as announced earlier this year, but also change its layout. Officials said the adjustment comes after the engineering firm hired to design the project surveyed the road and traffic volumes this spring.

SMITH, TIMES HERALD)
Huron Boulevardis currently a four-lane road with two lanes heading each way. Barry Kreiner, Marysvilles director of public services, said after construction it will bethree lanes one travel lane in each direction and a left-turn lane down the middle. Intersections would get right-turn lanes.
Its a safety factor. Theres a lot of activity around the schools. Thats one of the main concerns, Kreiner said, pointing tothe area near Marysville High School. Its safety for kids. A lot of people come across 14thStreet and try to zip across four lanes into school parking lots. There are accidents there.
Marysville planning to rebuild Huron Blvd.
Federal funds will pay for 75 percent of the work, and with each year, a different section will be reconstructed.
City Manager Randy Fernandez said the change likely is more cost effective, but safety trumps that.
Patrick Phelan, of firm BMJ Engineers and Surveyors, previously explained the study of the roadway to the City Council. He called the new design a road diet, that would calm traffic by encouraging lower speeds.
Huron Boulevard has a traffic count of more than 4,000 vehicles a day, according to the Southeastern Michigan Council of Governments. The roadway between Gratiot and Michigan also sees an average of four crashes a year.

Kreiner said engineers still have to turn their designs into the state for approval. For road diets to work, he said roadways have to carry 20,000 or fewer vehicles daily.
The only thing is if youre around 15,000, they require you to do an extra study just to support what youre proposing, but were so far below, we dont have to do that, he said.
Kreiner, also a member of the Marysville school board, said the city has met with some school officials, who support the measure. He said the full board will also get the BMJ presentation at its June meeting.
Additionally, now that council members have had a chance to ask questions, Fernandez said planning commissioners will too.
They will also hear about this proposal in case they want to weigh in, he said. One action item to approve or disapprove. We dont need to get their approval, but its just us doing our due diligence to include as many partners as we can in the process.

You Should Know How Your Diet Is Supposed To Work – Good Herald

The vast majority of people start dieting in order to lose weight. Losing weight can be accomplished in a number of ways. A diet is simply a specific method for accomplishing that task.
When one decides that they need to lose weight, the first thing that must be considered is the reason for wanting to lose weight. Is the weight loss going to be directed at a way to gain better health or is it more of a vanity reason? The reason for dieting is as important as the method used to lose the weight.
If attaining a more healthy lifestyle and striving for better health is the reason, it should not be of any concern how long the dieting takes to achieve the weight loss goal, if in fact there is a goal. If good health is the main objective, length of time should not be an issue because the diet should simply be a part of a life-style change in which the dieting change would be a long-term part of the life-style anyway.
If, on the other hand, vanity is the reason and the dieting person is hell bent on losing a significant amount of weight in a short period of time in order to fit into an object of clothing or simply to look great at the class reunion in a month, the method chosen for dieting will be completely different and, most likely, quite unhealthy.
Long term lifestyle type diets are usually of the type that occur in small increments of weight loss and continue as exercise is slowly increased and more healthy food, in smaller portions is consumed. These are usually quite simple diets that dont cause a significant amount of suffering as long as the dieting person is committed to the long-term goals.
The vanity type diet is usually a quick but very self-denying diet in which the dieting person eats very little or eats foods that do not tempt the pallet as far as taste or attractiveness go. Often, very large amounts of water are incorporated into these diets and most people do not drink enough water to begin with. When they are confronted with the need to increase their water intake significantly, they hesitate or they are not very compliant. Water, when one is not thirsty, simply does not taste very good.
The vanity diet also usually requires a substantial increase in activity in the form of exercise and most people have a strong aversion to that form of activity.
There are also diets that are not in either the lifestyle change nor the vanity dieting lists but are really a forced lifestyle change that is completely necessary for the dieting person to continue to live. Once such diet is the diabetic diet. If one ignores their diabetes and continues to eat large amounts of carbohydrates, as most Americans do, they will eventually suffer serious health deterioration. So, the necessary-for-life diets are not the ones we are really concerned with in this article.
There are a number of different diets available for each of the non-necessity diets. The basic lifestyle change diet has already been described though some of the latter day fad diets are also appropriate for long-term dieting if the person doing the dieting is indeed dedicated to the lifestyle change. Some specific fad diets that would work for this person are the Atkins or low-carb diet, The Zone diet or the South Beach diet.
The extreme vanity diet person can also use the low carb diet for fast weight loss or they can try starvation or if they really want to lose weight fast and suffer a bit more but at least retain some type of decent health, they can attempt the Lemonade Diet.
The lemonade diet is highly effective but is more a fast than a diet and a special mixture of water, cayenne pepper, lemon juice and syrup are required. One must be highly dedicated to losing weight for this diet to work as no food is allowed for a period of at least ten days and the Lemonade dieter will feel worse before they feel like a million dollars. The diet is extremely effective for losing ten pounds or more in ten days though. The added benefit of this diet is that it does a thorough job of cleaning the colon.
Each one of the above mentioned diets should be highly suspect and not just accepted for its reputation or the current fad. One who is considering dieting should, at the very least, buy the book that is written about the diet in order to learn how the diet works with the body and effects the different body systems. Each of the authors has a lot of information included in their book about these concerns.
The main point of this article is to point out to anyone who is considering dieting that they should be very careful and choose a diet that meets their goals and health concerns. Dont blindly go into any diet without knowing how its supposed to effect you, what youre supposed to eat while on the diet, how much weight you are expected to lose in a specific period of time and what are the benefits and health concerns that attach to that diet.
In fact, it is a very good idea to discuss any diet plans with your health care professional prior to starting or even considering one of the above diets.
