Controversial Raw Vegan Bloggers Claim Diet Gets Rid of ‘Toxic’ Menstruation – Yahoo Health

You may have a heavy period with annoying and painful side effects like cramps and headaches, but is it better not to have a period at all? Some raw vegan bloggers think so, and they are encouraging their readersto follow a similar extreme diet in order to lighten or eradicate their periods, which they claim are toxic.
Many girls who lose their period often worry and try numerous things to get it back, Miliany Bonet wrote on her blog, RawVeganLiving. Its often advised that to get your period back, you should stop exercising and eat more calories and incorporate more plant-based fats in your diet. What if I told you that everything you were taught about menstrual cycles was a complete LIE?!
Despite controversy, Bonet continues to support her claim. A non-menstruating body indicates the body is clean, the 19-year-old told Broadly in May. If a woman or young girl decided she wanted to stop menstruating or lighten up her heavy periods, then I would recommend a raw foods diet to help them with that. The industry has done a great job of brainwashing too many women into thinking that if they do not get their periods on a monthly basis, that something is wrong with their body and hormones.
Bonet is not the only blogger to lose her period and insist that its healthy. Back in 2013, controversial raw vegan blogger Freelee the Banana Girl shared a video discussing her period, stating that she was happy when she lost her period, and suggesting that her now very light, three-day period was healthy. A lot of people were like, no, thats unhealthy, you need your period, thats terrible. But is it? Well, a lot of people dont know, Freelee said. And all I can go on is my instincts and my feeling at the time that it felt good. It felt right, and at the time I think it needed to happen for my body to balance out.
As Freelee says, listening to your bodys signals is a good thing. But losing your period is indeed a signal sent from your body, and an important one at that. Doctors warn against changing your diet in an attempt to alter your menstrual cycle. Dieting to get rid of your period is unhealthy and anyone promoting this should be ashamed of themselves and take a first year biology course, Dr. Jen Gunter told theDaily Mail. This is a very dangerous idea and displays a complete lack of understanding of female biology and the human body in general. Periods are not bad or filled with toxins. This trend is alarming because it comes from someone who clearly has no understanding of periods or even biology in general and is just another form of body shaming.
Gunter says that women who are very thin and dont have a period may not be ovulating, and thus have very low estrogen levels and risk osteoporosis and other health concerns.
While Freelee acknowledges that ovulating is important and advises followers who lose their periods to check that they are still ovulating, she herself does not follow this advice. For some reason I just instinctively felt like I was still ovulating because I felt so good, Freelee said. I still believe that, largely, menstruation is toxicity leaving the body, she explains in her controversial video, which was heavily criticizedby some viewers and the eating-disorder charity Beat. So a lot of people are having these heavy, heavy periods and painful periods because they have a toxic body or have a toxic diet.
In response to the video, Beat defined the absence of periods as amenorrhea, a sign that somebody is at a low weight. Amenorrhea has in the past been used to diagnose anorexia nervosa.Being at a low weight and restricting intake for a significant [length] of time can have other serious side effects low blood pressure, osteoporosis, organ failure, infertility, restricted growth among others, Beat said.
Even vegan dietitian Vesanto Melina, a memberof the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, agrees that vegan diets centered around only fruit, as many raw vegan diets are, are low in protein and zinc. Its not an ideal vegan diet because the nutrient intake is very insufficient, Melina told Hollywood Life. And while its certainly possible to maintain a healthy vegan diet, losing your period is not a good sign. These women believed it was a good thing. They made a mythology out of it. But its not a normal thing. You need different food groups.
Despite the risks, these blogs remain popular, and a video uploaded by Freelee in September, which claims, If youve got heavy periods, thats not normal, has been viewed almost 250,000 times. That is not as healthy as you can be.

As a psychologist, Stacey Lee understands the impact social media images can have on a persons self-worth.
One of the recurrent themes I treat in my profession is body image and its effect on self-esteem, the Melbourne-based fitness influencer posted on Instagram on Monday. Self-esteem is defined as confidence in ones own worth. However, when that worth is tied to an image, a number on a scale, the size of clothes, the smoothness of skin, the smallness of a waist, the bigness of a butt, the definition on your abs or the gap between your thighs, your worth will never be measured correctly.
Lee says using those factors to define our self-worth is especially damaging when we hold ourselves to the unrealistic ideals set by images that have been photoshopped.
We are shown images every day which are not realistic even the small changes to photos or advertisements make a difference, she says. They send subconscious messages saying that you arent enough, and never will be.

Lee decided to decrease her exposure to manipulated images by unfollowing certain social media accounts.
As soon as I stopped following accounts that used photoshop, professional images, constant filters and altered their images, my self-esteem improved, she said. Being able to see real women share their real bodies [] gave me the confidence to work for my realistic goals, and to measure my progress on a REAL measuring stick.

PARKERSBURG, W.Va.-(WTAP) Five individuals who saved a man's life earlier this year were all honored Friday at a local fitness center.
Two employees and three customers of Planet Fitness in Gihon Plaza saved the life of Neil Hickey, after Hickey suffered a seizure.
Hickey joined Parkersburg Mayor Tom Joyce, Fire Chief Jason Matthew, and the fitness center's manager in honoring them with the American Heart Association's "Heart Saver" award.
Hickey recalled for us what happened that day.
"I remember coming to an area across from us, sitting down on a chair, and that's the last thing I remember. They showed me the video of it afterwards, and I'm (leaning to one side) as I'm falling out of the chair."
"The employees called 911 and got the fire department and the ambulance on the way," said Pvt. Jody Ludwig, an EMT for the fire department. "The bystanders were able to administer CPR and get the AED ready, and made our job and life a lot easier."
Hickey went through several months of therapy, but we're happy to report he's back on his normal exercise routine.

June 02, 2017 -A new study from Stanford Medicine finds that fitness wearables can measure heart rate with 95 percent accuracy, but fail to accurately count calories burned. Devices produced error rates between 23 percent and 93 percent, indicating that the wearables may not be very useful for making decisions about diet and exercise.
The research team devised the study to explore the reliability of popular wearables when measuring important health data such as heart rate (HR) and energy expenditure (EE), a term synonymous with calories burned.
More and more people rely on their fitness wearables to educate them on their health and assist in their health-centered decisions. If devices continue to deliver poor data, patients may be misled when relying on their wearables to make self-care choices.
People are basing life decisions on the data provided by these devices, said Euan Ashley, DPhil, and professor of cardiovascular medicine, of genetics and biomedical data science at Stanford. But consumer devices arent held to the same standards as medical-grade devices, and its hard for doctors to know what to make of heart-rate data and other data from a patients wearable device, he said.
In order to measure the accuracy of fitness wearables, the team provided a diverse user population with seven different models of devices. These devices included popular items such as the Apple Watch, Basis Peak, Fitbit Surge, Microsoft Band, Mio Alpha 2, PulseOn and the Samsung Gear S2.
Users then were assigned various physical tasks including walking, cycling, sitting, and standing. At the same time, the participants were measured with a medical-grade electrocardiograph (ECG) to see how the wearables stacked up to clinically accurate data.
The lowest error in measuring HR was observed for the cycling task at rates of 1.8 percent while the highest error was observed for the walking task at 5.5 percent. Of the seven devices in regards to any physical activity, the Apple Watch achieved the lowest error in HR at 2 percent while the Samsung Gear S2 had the highest HR error with 6.8 percent error.
For EE, the lowest relative error rates across all devices were achieved for the walking (31.8 percent error) and running (31 percent error) tasks. The highest error rates when recording EE occurred during the sitting tasks with 52.4 percent error. Median error rates across tasks varied from the 27.4 percent mark for the Fitbit Surge to 92.6 percent for the PulseOn.
The heart rate measurements performed far better than we expected,but the energy expenditure measures were way off the mark, Ashley said. The magnitude of just how bad they were surprised me.
Following the completion of their study, Ashley and his team created an online forum where other users can share their fitness wearable data, and look through the data gathered in the study.
The next step for the researchers will involve a similar study, where individuals will generate wearable data during their daily routines outside of a clinical lab. By doing so, the team hopes that they can further inform the public on the reliability of fitness wearables.

Laquita Johnson, of Tyler, wanted to improve her overall health, and talked to her primary care physician about how she could lower her cholesterol, increase her strength and get in better physical condition.
That was last November, and Ms. Johnson remembers, I knew I couldnt do it alone; I needed help.
Her doctor recommended the free Exercise is Medicine program at East Texas Medical Centers Olympic Center second-floor gym and wrote a free exercise prescription for Ms. Johnson to participate.
An Exercise is Medicine credentialed staff member, Hali Kizer, program coordinator, made a free fitness assessment of Ms. Johnson.
The hour-long assessment included a check of her heart rate, blood pressure, height, weight, body fat percentage, strength, flexibility and an aerobic fitness test.
Next Ms. Johnson came in for a 30-minute appointment. By then, Ms. Kizer had developed a free personalized exercise regimen for her and recommended which exercise machines to use, trained her in how to adjust the seat and weights on each machine.
She also recommended how long and how many days per week to exercise. Ms. Johnson then received a free two-week pass to the gym to try out the prescribed exercise regimen.
After that two-week introduction, Ms. Kizer conducted a follow-up meeting with Ms. Johnson to see how things were going.
Ms. Kizer said at that point with all trainees, she asks them if they want to continue exercising in a gym. If they do, they have the options of joining the Olympic Center gym or another gym.
Im not going to pressure them to join with us, Ms. Kizer said.
If they do not want to join a gym, Ms. Kizer sends them off with recommended home exercises.
Ms. Johnson had not been getting any exercise when she entered the Exercise is Medicine program. She began working out two or three times a week and worked up to coming four or five days a week.
She works out on the leg press, leg curl, chest press, elliptical and other machines. Ms. Johnson found that she enjoyed exercise as well as being around other people at the gym.
She liked having an Exercise is Medicine exercise specialist answer her questions, encourage her, make sure that she uses the exercise machines safely and properly and tells her when she needs to increase the weights.
It (exercise) becomes addictive, Ms. Johnson said.
Consequently, upon completing the Exercise is Medicine program, she began paying a fee to work with a personal trainer and monthly membership dues to continue exercising by participating in other Olympic Center programs.
Now, Ms. Johnson said, Ive lost a few pounds. Ive gotten much stronger in my legs and my arms. I can tell a huge improvement in my cardio. I just feel great and Im learning how to take better care of myself. I have resolved to be healthy as long as I can as I grow older.
Exercise is Medicine is a global health initiative managed by the American College of Sports Medicine and focused on encouraging primary care physicians and other health care providers to include physical activity when designing treatment plans for patients, according to its web site.
Exercise is Medicine is based on the belief that physical activity is integral in the prevention and treatments of many diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and obesity, the website reads.
ETMC offers the Exercise is Medicine program at its Tyler facility, along with the satellite facilities at Lake Palestine and Cedar Creek Lake.
Our main goal for this program is to get people healthier, get them to exercising and get them moving, Ms. Kizer said.
The program shows them that it is simple to exercise on their own and prepares them to do it without them having to figure it out, she said.
We want to make sure they understand what they are doing and learn that exercise is an important thing in our life, Ms Kizer said.
People can get into the Exercise is Medicine program two different ways. Their doctor can refer them, or the personcan go online to etmc.org/fitness, fill out a form and get their doctors signature.
Most referrals have come from ETMC doctors but a few have come from the Christus Trinity Mother Frances Health System.During an appointment with a patient, a doctor may give them a referral or fax it to the program.
Staff will schedule the initial appointments upon receiving a doctors referral and prescription for someone to participate. The Exercise is Medicine program bridges the gap between what the doctor recommends for patients to exercise and how to put it into real life terms so that they can do it themselves.
We will help them along the way, Ms. Kizer said.
Exercise can help people improve their health in many ways including decreasing their resting heart rate and blood pressure, lowering their cholesterol level, preventing cancer and helping people get off medication or lower their doses. It also helps increase a persons muscle strength and endurance, Ms. Kizer said.
It will help with many diseases, Ms. Kizer said. A lot of studies ... show it definitely lowers your risk for cancer. It will help keep down pain levels from arthritis. It also helps with prevention of osteoporosis. Its good for weight control. Its great for everything in your body and it helps you live longer.
As of May, 15 people this year had participated in the ETMC Exercise is Medicine program. Sixty-one participated in 2016 and 63 in 2015. Full-time Olympic Center exercise staff have the Exercise is Medicine credential as well as a bachelors degree and national certification from either the American College of Sports Medicine or the American Council on Exercise.

When it came to starting a wedding diet, I procastinated. Hard. In fact, a month before the big day I went on a work trip to Morocco and Paris where I ate all of the bread, butter, and chocolate my appetite desired (as one does). Which is all part of the how I found myself muffin-topping over the sides of my strapless Reem Acra gown (pictured, top left) at my last fitting, just two weeks before I was supposed to walk down the aisle.
I'll admit, I was bloated at the time from my period, so when it ended a few days before my wedding, my body tightened. But, I was also up a few pounds. Instead of accepting it, I took about four private workout sessions per week with celebrity trainer David Kirsch. The pro is responsible for sculpting the bodies of celebrities (like Jennifer Lopez and Heidi Klum) and has a wealth of fitness and health knowledge (to recap, he's written five books, has his own line of shakes and supplements, and owns a top-notch NYC gym). He put me on a routine that was a mix of cardio, strength training, HIIT, and TRX. Every time we met up, the moves and sequences were different, which kept my body guessing and metabolism revved.
But anyone who has successfully lost weight knows diet is more than half of the battle. And pre-getting "Kirsched," I had been working out almost every day anyways. So I do credit his eating plan for partly pushing those five extra pounds off of my body.
Here, I am going to share exactly what I ate and most importantly, did not eat! to shed the lbs, so my dress fit perfectly (top right). Note, the dress was not taken in or out between the two images, but my body actually transformed in two weeks!
"In my experience working with a bride-to-be, the last couple of weeks leading up to the wedding is uber stressful," Kirsch told me. "As you can attest to personally (Lauren), slight tweaking of your diet will go a long way to keeping you optimally energized, fueled, and looking your very best on the big day!"

Let's start with the hard part, things to avoid according to Kirsch:
Say goodbye to pizza, because you will not be eating processed carbs (bread, pasta, crackers, etc.) or dairy. "I have found that dairy can cause bloating, and who wants to be bloated on their day?" Kirsch said. And no whole grains or potatoes either.
I have personally eliminated both gluten and dairy for weeks and added them back to reveal that I am not intolerant to either. I can have a slice of pizza and feel like a peach, but kicking them out of my diet definitely made my belly flatter. After three days of no carbs, I was craving them! So I texted Kirsch asking if I could have a sweet potato. He told me to crunch on celery instead. It took willpower to follow his advice, but it was worth it. I surely enjoyed sliding into my bathing suit when I arrived at my tropical honeymoon a few days after my wedding.
You'll also need to revamp your drinking game. That means, no alcohol (NONE!). While this meant sitting through events, family dinners, and bar nights totally sober, I enjoyed the mental clarity and increased energy in the mornings. "Save the glass of champagne for after you walk down the aisle!" he said. And yes, I got to enjoy a few flutes of well-earned bubbly at my affair . . . and a margarita!
I also had to limit the amount of coffee I drank. Kirsch recommends having one espresso in the morning. While I stuck to brewed coffee beans, I drank it black. I didn't even add almond milk, and I swear it makes a difference in better digestion.
Kirsch believes that "too much coffee can lead to belly bloat!" Think about it, coffee dehydrates you, so you retain water to hold on to it. Instead, switch over to green tea, which has both caffeine and antioxidants. Every morning, I also had one of his A.M. Detox Drinks (it's yummy and fantastic for your skin!). You can see it in the mason jar above.
Finally, the hardest (for me, since I have a sweet tooth): no sugar. Even dark chocolate. OK, I may have had a handful of dark chocolate-covered almonds one rough night, but for the most part (like 95 percent) I kissed my beloved cookies, ice cream, and cupcakes goodbye. In fact, my husband hid the chocolate on a very high shelf so I could not reach or find it in our apartment. Do what you need to do to survive, brides!

Now onto what you can eat. Disclaimer, this was not Kirsch's exact plan but one loosely based off his advice and what I know works best for my body.
For breakfast I stuck to two options. The first, two eggs and sauteed spinach, all cooked in EVOO. Earlier in my wedding prep, I enjoyed that dish with a side of avocado, but the last two weeks I cut it based on Kirsch's recommendation to limit my fat intake (even healthy ones!). Otherwise, I had an antioxidant-rich bowl of unsweetened coconut yogurt with a handful of raw almonds, chia seeds, flax seeds, cacao nibs, and blueberries. While Kirsch recommended no fruit (remember, no sugar!), I know blueberries are good for eliminating belly fat and making skin glow, so I had some anyways. If you're going to have sugar, eat it in the morning so you can burn it off throughout the day.
When it came to snacks, I sipped on dark green pressed juice (the kind without fruit) and crunchy veggies (Kirsch likes celery, red peppers, and jicama sticks). I also ate GoMacro bars, which were referred to me by another trainer I'd been working out with, Steve Pasterino. I bent the rules a little since these are made with brown rice syrup, but it ensured that I had an option when I was on-the-go.
Dinner and lunch were pretty similar. I'd either have what I dubbed a "Sad Salad" of spinach, crunchy water veggies (cucumber and snow peas), and lean protein (homemade chicken or salmon with no sauces) all drizzled with EVOO and a lemon squeeze. Snooze. Otherwise, I would cook veggies (such as steamed green beans or asparagus) and have it with the aforementioned lean meat or fish. Sometimes, I would even have the eggs (see: breakfast!) for dinner, which I found very easy to digest. Occasionally, I'd enjoy a green smoothie (kale, spinach, blueberries, almond milk) with pea protein powder.

And for our grand finale, what to eat during your actual wedding weekend:
By then being a bride had taken over my identity (it happens to the best and most chill of us ladies in white). So I brought my own food to the weekend destination, including unsweetened coconut yogurt, hard-boiled eggs, green juice, nuts, seeds, bars, etc. I made sure my hotel room had a fridge to store it in.
"The day before is a day that you want to make sure to put the finishing touches," said Kirsch. "You have planned hard, sweated hard, and stayed away from the obvious no-nos. What else can you do? I suggest a relaxing massage, sauna, and steam. Eating foods like asparagus and celery will help keep you full and debloat you."
So I couldn't resist a taste of homemade pasta during our rehearsal dinner at a delicious Italian restaurant, but by 7 a.m. the next day, I was back on it.
"The day of, I would have a couple of eggs in the morning and oatmeal as you will need the energy and fuel for the rest of the day," Kirsch recommended. "A protein shake for lunch and water for the rest of the day. Save the drinking and eating for after the ceremony, or better yet, for the honeymoon!"
Here's what I consumed for breakfast on my wedding day: I had the antioxidant yogurt and seed bowl as well as black coffee; for lunch I ate a simple salad with grilled chicken provided by my venue; and for snack, I went with a GoMacro bar. After the ceremony, my husband and I sat in a separate room and ate every single appetizer (including pork buns, pulled BBQ chicken, mini grilled cheese sandwiches, and more!) and drank champagne. Diet. Over. As the evening went on, I enjoyed the goat cheese salad (CHEESE!), the short rib and sweet potato entree, wedding cake, homemade cookies, and apple cider donuts. There was pizza at our afterparty. I ate that, too.
Was dieting fun? No. Was it satisfying? Absolutely not. Was it worth it? Hell yes! For two weeks, you can do this! And you likely will lose inches, but you have to stick to it almost perfectly. We all have our handful of dark chocolate almonds here and there, but make sure you get right back on track. The best part in addition to your tight bod? You can pig out on your honeymoon! After high school, Ronnie Brower felt depressed. He wondered what he was doing with his life and turned to drugs, alcohol and food to soothe his emotions. As time passed, he slowly put on weight and eventually reached 675 pounds by 2013. When he went to the doctor, he learned something shocking: If he didnt lose weight, he might die.
That really hit me, the bus driver in Syracuse, New York, told TODAY.
But he ignored it for several days until a friend recommended that Brower talk to her cousin, Nick Murphy, who was a trainer. After stalling a little longer, Brower reached out.
I was a little nervous meeting him, he is huge. His arms are bigger than my whole body, Brower, 32, said.
After a doctor told Ronnie Brower, who was 675 pounds, that if he didn't lose weight he could die, Brower finally started working out and eating healthy foods. He dropped 458 pounds in 23 months.
But Murphy encouraged Brower and came up with a weight-loss plan. At first, Brower could only work out at home. Hed simply stand up and sit down in a chair, use an arm bike, do some arm raises with weights and attempted sit-ups.
After 100 days, Brower felt comfortable enough for the gym. He also started a ketogenic diet, a low-carb, high-fat, moderate protein and vegetable-focused diet. He hoped to get to 250 pounds.
When Brower first started losing weight he wasnt sure how much he lost because he was too heavy for his scale. He went to his uncles trucking company where he learned he lost 30 pounds in the first week. But that was mostly water weight and he soon learned dropping pounds from his 6-foot frame wasnt always easy.
I would get a little discouraged, he said. Some weeks I wouldnt lose any weight. Some weeks I lost 20 pounds.
He started sharing his weight-loss journey on a Facebook page and in early 2015, he received a message from a woman named Andrea. She, too, was losing weight and working with Murphys wife, Jill.
Andrea said she was proud of me and good job, Brower said.
When Andrea Brower went on a vacation she felt uncomfortable in her bathing suit. That's when she knew she had to lose weight, eventually dropping 120 pounds.
He responded with an aloof, thanks, you, too.
It was kind of lame, he said, laughing.
But Andrea, didnt let that stop her. She messaged him again and this time he actually chatted with her.
At the time, Andrea sent Brower a message, she was about eight months into her own weight-loss journey and had shed about 75 pounds. When she first started working with Jill, she weighed 250 pounds at 5 feet 4 inches. She hoped to get to 130 pounds. But like Brower, she struggled at first.
It was really difficult because I was so heavy, she said. "I was embarrassed that I am a big girl and going into the gym.
While Andrea was a thin child, when she was in eighth grade she started gaining weight, but like Brower, she really gained after high school.
I ate just awful. Just crap food and so I would also eat if anything would happen in life. If something great happened I would eat. If something bad happened I would eat, said the 25-year-old hairdresser.
Andrea started following Ronnie's weight loss online and started chatting with him. They had so many things in common, including shedding hundreds of pounds to transform their health.
After going on vacation and feeling very uncomfortable in her bathing suit, Andrea decided to lose weight. She had a business card for her trainer, Jill, for six months before she finally felt courageous enough to call in 2014.
Thats when she started working out and following a ketogenic diet, too. When she first spotted Brower in the gym she was immediately interested.
We just kind of started talking. Honestly, from there it was over with. I dont want to sound clich but it was love in first sight, she said. We had so much in common.
As the relationship blossomed, the two continued toward their weight-loss goals. Andrea lost 120 pounds and Brower shed 458, a total loss of 578 pounds combined. The couple has maintained it for year and a half and still work out and cook healthy meals together.
On May 13, the couple took their relationship to the next level and got married.
The wedding was phenomenal. I cried when she came down the aisle, said Brower.
After bonding over their mutual weight loss, the Browers realized that they had so much and common and they made each other happy. They married in May.
Andrea agrees.
It was amazing, she said.
They went to Mexico for their honeymoon and returned to Syracuse to continue their healthy lives together. They provided tips for others hoping to lose weight.
When it felt tough in the gym or the number on the scale didnt move, Andrea focused on a mantra that kept her motivated.
There were days toward the end where I was like Im done and I just remembered that I have a goal that I needed to reach, she said.
While the Browers had trainers keeping them focused, they also encouraged each other.
We hold each other accountable. And we know each other so well. Shes been through the same thing that I have been through, Brower said.
The couple lost weight by following a ketogenic diet and enjoy cooking healthy meals together.
When the couple became serious, they talked about their hopes and goals. And during this conversation, Brower stressed that working out would always be an important part of his life.
I need to work out to keep healthy for me, her, and our marriage, he said.
Not surprisingly, Andrea agreed.
