What exactly is gluten? And can I lose weight if I give it up? – Bangor Daily News

How often have you heard that wed all be better off if we eliminated gluten from our diets? That if we did, wed feel a lot better and might even lose weight. Maybe youve already given up gluten and do feel better, but I decided to get some straight answers for all the rest of us.
Gluten is a particular type of protein found in wheat, barley, and rye, and anything made from them. Wheat products, including anything made with regular flour, are the gluten-containing foods that most Americans eat every day.
People with celiac disease, which is an autoimmune disorder, must completely avoid gluten. A small number of people have non-celiac gluten sensitivity, and find that gluten causes specific problems for them, such as joint pains, rashes, or gastrointestinal problems. Most people, however, are unlikely to get any health benefits from avoiding gluten. Instead, they may introduce new problems into their lives: missing out on certain nutrients, paying premium prices for their food, and making it more difficult to enjoy food in restaurants and at the homes of friends and family.
Avoiding gluten is not an effective weight loss strategy for most people. 25 years ago, giving up gluten meant giving up bread, breakfast cereal, donuts, pasta, pizza, bagels, crackers, and desserts. Cutting such a large number of foods out of your diet might have resulted in some weight loss. But in 2017, these foods are easily replaced with gluten-free alternatives. Many of them are highly processed and have even more sugar and fat than the originals. People who eat unlimited amounts of these foods because they are gluten-free are only fooling themselves if they think it will result in weight loss.
Have you given up gluten? Why? Tell us about your experience.

Eat only every other day and lose weight? – Harvard Health (blog)

Posted May 31, 2017, 10:30 am
The alternate-day fasting thing is very popular right now. This gist of it is, basically, feast and famine. You starve one day, then feast the next. Proponents claim that this approach will lead to weight loss, as well as a number of other benefits.
As a physician researcher, this annoys and alarms me. I preach sensible intake of real foods as part of a lifelong approach to health. I also depend on scientific evidence to guide my counseling. So, I welcomed this yearlong study comparing alternate-day fasting with more common calorie restriction.
Researchers divided 100 obese study volunteers (mostly African-American women, without other major medical issues) into three groups:
The two diet groups received counseling as well as all foods provided. This weight loss period was followed by another six months of weight maintenance and observations.
Both diet groups lost about 5.5% of their body weight (12 pounds) by month six, and both regained about 1.8% (four pounds) by month 12, and had significant improvements in blood pressure, blood sugar, insulin, and inflammatory proteins when compared to the people who ate their normal diets.
At the end of the 12 months, there was only one difference between the two diet groups: the alternate fasting day group had a significant elevation in low density lipoprotein (LDL), an increase of 11.5 mg/dl as compared to the daily calorie restriction group. LDL is known as a risk factor for heart attacks and strokes, so thats not good.
This was a very small study to begin with, and, more importantly, there was a fairly significant dropout rate. Only 69% of subjects stayed to the end, which decreases the power of the findings. Twelve people quit the alternate-day fasting group, with almost half citing dissatisfaction with the diet. By comparison, 10 people quit the daily calorie restriction group, and none cited dissatisfaction with diet, only personal reasons and scheduling conflicts (eight quit the control group for the same reasons).
Its not surprising that people disliked alternate-day fasting. Previous studies have reported that people felt uncomfortably hungry and irritable on fasting days, and that they didnt get accustomed to these discomforts. Interestingly, in this study, over time people in the fasting group ate more on fasting days and less on feasting days. So basically by the end of the study they were eating similarly to the calorie restriction group.
The authors note more limitations. The control group did not receive food, counseling, or the same attention from the study personnel, potential factors that could affect their results, besides how they ate. And this study cant tell us about the potential benefits for people who have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes because the study didnt include individuals with those conditions.
Usually at this point we say something like more studies of this approach are needed, but I wont. Theres already plenty of evidence supporting a common-sense lifestyle approach to weight loss: ample intake of fruits and veggies, healthy fats, lean proteins, and plenty of exercise. From apples to zucchini, there are over a hundred real foods you can eat endlessly, enjoy, and yes, still lose weight.
I would advise against spending any more money on fad diet books. Or processed carbs, for that matter. Rather, hit the fresh or frozen produce aisle, or farmers market, and go crazy. Then go exercise. Do that, say, for the rest of your life, and you will be fine. No one got fat eating broccoli, folks. (That said, if you tend to binge or stress-eat sugary or starchy foods, and you feel like you cant control your habit, talk to your doctor, because that is a separate issue to be addressed.)

Just THINKING about exercise will make you lose weight, study reveals – Daily Star

THE more you think about exercise, the more weight you lose.
GETTY
For some people, exercise is their favourite part of the day, for others its just another chore they want to get over and done with.
However, thinking of exercise as a chore could actually be the reason we cant lose weight.
Researchers from the University of Michigan have suggested the key to weight loss is all in our minds we need to change the way we think about exercise.
The study published in BMC Public Health, found what makes us feel happy and successful overall can be determined by our exercise methods.
The study showed both active and inactive women said connecting with others and helping them be happy and successful made them feel fulfilled, along with being relaxed and free of pressures during their leisure time, and accomplishing goals from grocery shopping to career goals.
However, inactive women said the way they felt about exercise made them feel less happy and unsuccessful.
This is because many of them said they believed valid exercise must be intense, yet they said they wanted to feel relaxed during their leisure time.

The inactive women said they feel pressure to exercise for health or to lose weight and yet during their leisure time they dont want to be pressured.
And these women also said they believe success comes from achieving goals, yet their expectations for how much and how they should be exercising was leaving little room to achieve these goals.
Comparatively, active women didnt feel bad if they missed a workout every so often and for them exercise was a middle priority.
Michelle Segar, study author said: "Their beliefs about what exercise should consist of and their past negative experiences about what it feels like actually prevents them from successfully adopting and sustaining physically active lives.
Michelle said she thinks the traditional approach to exercise 30 minutes of vigorous exercise per day could potentially harm motivation.
She added: "We need to re-educate women they can move in ways that will renew instead of exhaust them, and more effectively get the message across that any movement is better than nothing.
Michelle continued that the key is to make exercise fun, not daunting and prior studies have shown exercising with friends or finding a fun exercise can help with this its all about changing the mindset to enjoy exercise, not fear it.

VERIFY: Does tequila have health benefits? – KHOU

There have been posts and videos popping up on social media touting the medicinal benefits of the clear liquor, saying it helps you sleep, lose weight, and can even cure a common cold. But are those claims true?

There have been posts and videos popping up on social media touting the medicinal benefits of the clear liquor, saying it helps you sleep, lose weight, and can even cure a common cold. But are those claims true?
Our sister station,KARE11, spoke to two expert sources on the benefits of tequila:
Phelps brought up agave, a cactus varietal that is the main ingredient in tequila. Some experts tout its ability to replace sugars, aiding in weight loss. Agave's anti-inflammatoryand immune-boosting properties have also been cited, and the website sheknows.com claims the Aztecs used agave syrup to treat wounds because of its antibacterial properties. Three years ago, the American Chemical Society did report that a sweetener created from the agave plant could help certain people with diabetes lose weight.
So if tequila is made of agave it has to be good for you, right? Not so much, said Vander Laan.
"There's not even that type of sugar left in it because it's fermented out," Vander Laan said, talking about the process of distilling agave into tequila.
Does it really help you sleep?
"It's a depressant, so it might help you actually get to sleep, but I'm not sure it's that restful sleep," asserted Vander Haan. The National Sleep Foundation agrees, saying alcohol interrupts your circadian rhythm, blocks REM sleep and can aggravate breathing problems.
How about weight loss? "An ounce and a half of hard alcohol is about 80 calories," says Vander Haan, not even mentioning the sweet, caloric stuff tequila is frequently mixed with.
And that whole dead about curing colds? "They used to use it back in the 30's, back when you could order all sorts of crazy things for the Sears catalog, right? No, there's no evidence to support that," Vander Haan insisted.
At this point, we can safely say KARE 11 has verified that tequila is NOT good for you, despite some of the claims you may have seen on social media. Vander Laandoes say that moderate alcohol use of any variety may have some positive heart benefits for some, but alcohol is also hard on your liver, increases the risk of certain cancers, and can be addictive.
If you're going to drink tequila this Cinco de Mayo, Vander Haan says to do it in moderation, and if you're not a tequila drinker.... don't start swilling it for your health.
