If you're looking to shed weight this year, then you should avoid two popular diets that might do more harm than good, dietitians have claimed.
Susie Burrell and Leanne Ward - who are the co-hosts of the popular nutrition podcast The Nutrition Couch - highlighted extreme low calorie and detox diets as the 'worst' options you can follow if you want to lose weight long-term.
'On any given day, there are a number of different diets trending on social media or being aggressively advertised on TV, but when you're a dietitian, there are a couple that do more harm than good and drive us crazy,' Susie said.
EXTREME LOW CALORIE
The first you should steer clear of at all costs, the dietitians said, is an extreme low calorie diet - or one where you consume 500 or 800 calories per day.
'I have most disdain for diets that promote severe calorie restriction, or anything less than 1,000 calories,' Susie said.
'I'm thinking diets like the HCG diet or fasting approaches. I cannot tell you how frustrated I get when I see a 90 or 100kg female who has been religiously following an 800 calorie diet.'
The reason why she hates this diet is because while it might initially give you a one or two kilo weight loss quickly, this will immediately plateau as soon as you inevitably fall off the wagon and eat more - and it can even lead to weight gain.
'Remember, 800 calories is less than half what the average female requires on a day to day basis to get their nutrition,' Susie said.
'In the case of what it looks like, it's a couple of boiled eggs and a slice of toast, a tuna salad at lunch and a piece of boiled fish and veggies for dinner, with maybe a piece of fruit as a snack - every single day.'
She said that it is 'obvious' it will give immediate returns, but then as soon as you stop the weight goes back on and quickly:
'Metabolically, it does so much damage,' Susie added.
The reason why is because you're teaching your body to make do with less, so it goes into starvation mode and then clings on to any excess fat it can when you start eating normally again.
DETOX DIETS
The second diet the dietitians absolutely hate is anything that involves the word detox.
'The lemon water diet, the green juice detox diet - any kind of detox is an absolute no go,' Leanne said.
'The main reason why I hate them is because the weight loss is often just water weight or even muscle weight.'
Even if you follow a cold-pressed juice diet or lemon detox diet for a short period of time like two weeks, she said, you will lose a 'lot of muscle mass' - which isn't good for either the look or feel of your body.
'By all means, drink green juices if you want, but focus on great quality food and think about your nutrition,' Leanne said.
The dietitians are instead fans of balanced, 80/20 approaches - whereby they eat healthily 80 per cent of the time and allow themselves a little of what they love for the remaining 20 per cent.
Both Leanne and Susie try to fill their plates with a variety of protein, complex carbohydrates, vegetables, fruit and good fats like extra Virgin olive oil and avocado.
Then, if they want a piece of dark chocolate or a glass of red wine, they allow themselves 20 per cent of the time.
Susie Burrell has been in the headlines recently after her husband Chris Smith was sacked by Sky News and radio station 2GB in December, before checking himself in to a mental health facility.

Whether youve been with your boyfriend for a month, six months, or a year, youve probably wondered where the relationship is headed. You definitely feel a lot for him; your heart does a little flip whenever he kisses you, you anxiously await his good morning text, and youre always in a better mood when youve just been with him.
Youve likely even wondered if it could be love, or eventually turn into that after all, doesnt it take a while before were actually in love with someone? How long does falling in love usually take? Is there a normal timeframe, or does it just depend on the couple?
As is the case with most things, theres no hard and fast rule for how quickly we should or will fall in love. While some might be reticent to invest more deeply in a relationship (whether due to insecurity, past trauma, immaturity, or something else), others swear they knew they would fall in love quickly from the moment they laid eyes on their significant other. But how quickly can someone fall in love, on average?
A 2013 study found that men typically take 88 days (which comes out to around 3 months) to say I love you, while women normally dont declare such a thing until 134 days have passed (which is nearly 4.5 months). Falling in love, at least according to the research, takes a little more time than a single glance, but it can also happen relatively quickly in the grand scheme of things.

Falling into infatuation is fast, but falling in love takes time according to research, at least a few months for both men and women. While theres no right or wrong timeframe in which to fall for someone, its helpful to know how long it normally takes for that kind of connection to form when were in the throes of emotions in a new relationship.

Ozempic and Wegovy for Weight Loss: What Foods To Eat And Avoid – TODAY
Weight loss with Ozempic or Wegovy comes with a logical, but potentially jarring change in eating habits.
Both medications contain semaglutide, which mimics a hormone that tells the brain youve had a meal. Patients taking the drugs feel less hunger and they can experience side effects such as nausea, affecting how much food they can tolerate.
Jeannine DellaVecchia says she would sometimes force herself to eat when she was taking Ozempic because she would have absolutely no appetite, was completely nauseous and vomiting all the time.
Some days, I would have omelets just to try to get something into me, DellaVecchia, 40, who works for a hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, tells TODAY.com.
You dont feel like eating it just wasnt good for me.
DellaVecchia was prescribed the Type 2 diabetes treatment Ozempic to treat symptoms related to insulin resistance caused by congenital adrenal hyperplasia and polycystic ovary syndrome. Weight loss wasnt a priority although she says she was intrigued that the drug might also help her slim down.
It did just that, with DellaVecchia losing 30 pounds between August 2022 and February 2023, when she stopped taking the drug because she couldnt tolerate the side effects, she says. DellaVecchia is currently still at her lowest weight of 152 pounds and trying to maintain the weight loss with a healthy diet and the help of her registered dietitian, Emily Rubin.
I have seen patients with chronic nausea and vomiting on (semaglutide), which can cause dehydration and malnutrition if you cant get enough calories or fluids daily, Rubin, director of clinical dietetics in the division of gastroenterology and hepatology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, tells TODAY.com.
Wegovy, which is approved for weight loss by the U.S. Food and Drug administration, should be usedin addition to a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity, the agency notes. Ozempic is not approved for weight loss by the FDA, though many people are using it off-label for that purpose.
Patients trying to lose weight with either drug should work with a dietitian for a guided meal plan, but in general, they should aim to eat 1,200 to 1,800 calories a day depending on their initial weight, Rubin says. A rule of thumb is that eating 500 fewer calories a day than usual will lead to a weight loss of about 1 pound a week, she adds.
Eat a lot of different vegetables and healthy proteins as the foundation of your diet, advises Dr. Louis Aronne, an obesity medicine physician and director of the Comprehensive Weight Control Center at Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian.
Weve done studies showing that if you eat vegetables and protein first, and then have carbs towards the end of the meal, it actually is beneficial to your blood sugar, probably for your weight as well, Aronne, who is a scientific adviser for Novo Nordisk, the company that makes Ozempic and Wegovy, tells TODAY.com.
The cornerstone of the diet has to be real food healthy food.
The most ideal situation would be to commit to eating healthier food as semaglutideis reducing hunger and cravings for unhealthy options, says Dr. Zhaoping Li, professor of medicine and chief of the division of clinical nutrition at the University of California, Los Angeles.
"You can have the chance to make the right decisions to eat good food," Li tells TODAY.com. "Theres nothing better than you not only losing weight, but also overall eating much healthier food."
For those on the drug, Rubin recommends increasing your intake of lean protein such as chicken, turkey, fish, eggs, beans, soy and low-fat dairy. If you have no appetite or nausea, try low-calorie protein drinks, she adds.
She advises a minimum of 60 grams (about 2 ounces) of protein per day, preferably spread out over meals and snacks. Protein preserves muscle mass and provides amino acids needed for growth and development, says dietitian Kristin Kirkpatrick.
Vegetables and fruits, which are full of vitamins, minerals and fiber, are essential for a healthy weight-loss program, Rubin notes. She also recommends one to two daily servings of healthy fats such as avocados, nuts and seeds.
Choose a small amount of whole grains a half-cup serving per meal such as whole-wheat pasta, whole-wheat tortillas, quinoa or sweet potato, Rubin advises. These are complex carbs that are high in fiber.
The most common side effects of Ozempic and Wegovy include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain and constipation, according to Novo Nordisk.
Rubin advised patients to talk to their doctor about any bothersome symptoms and discuss the best dose of each drug to minimize side effects.
Patients start with the lowest dose and gradually work their way up to higher doses, Aronne says. Doctors know how to manage the problem of nausea, he adds.
Some patients receive anti-nausea medications, but Li cautioned against taking another drug. Most anti-nausea medicines carry significant side effects, she notes.
"We call (nausea) a side effect, but truly that is how the drug could work by making you feel you dont want to eat," Li says.
Generally, if the dose is raised slowly and doctors advise patients to not eat past the point of fullness and to notice which foods may exacerbate their symptoms and eat less of those, the side effects are well tolerated, says Dr. Ania Jastreboff, director of weight management and obesity prevention at the Yale Stress Center in New Haven, Connecticut. She serves on the scientific advisory board for Novo Nordisk.
For example, DellaVecchia likes hoagies, but if she would try to eat one, it would make her sick, she says. A better option was yogurt with almonds, peanuts and some cinnamon, which she found delicious and filling.
Another Ozempic patient previously told TODAY.com that greasy food in general was "really hard" for her to eat after starting the medication.
Li points out that's not a bad thing.
"If they feel nauseated with high-fat food, thats actually great, right? We dont want saturated fat. We dont want too much oil. Thats good," Li says.
"There are also people who feel sweets are not as enjoyable as they used to be. I would say, OK, great with that as well. If youre not really enjoying your typical American diet that can be either ultra-processed carbs or high-fat diet thats a great thing."
If a patient still experiences a lot of side effects after changing the foods they eat or how much they eat, it may be time to back down on the dose of semaglutide, Li says.

Man Eats Only McDonald’s For 100 Days To Lose Weight: What a Dietitian Thinks – TODAY
Eating fast food to lose weight might seem like an oxymoron, but one TikTok user is causing quite a stir with his surprising weight loss strategy.
After he recently hit 238 pounds, 56-year-old business coach Kevin Maginnis of Nashville, Tennessee, announced his plan to eat only McDonald's for three meals a day for 100 days straight in an effort to shed some pounds.
In the viral TikTok video, Maginnis called his weight absolutely unacceptableand said he planned to slim down by limiting his portions and eating only half of each McDonald's order.
After kicking off his 100-day weight loss challenge on Feb. 21, the TikToker stopped by the TODAY show on March 2 to share an update on his progress. Maginnis is down 12.5 pounds and said he's feeling a lot of momentum.
"My belief is (I'll) be down 50 poundsby the end, my health will be better, my bloodwork will be better. And if you dont believe me, follow along," he told TODAY's Carson Daly and Sheinelle Jones.
Prior to starting the challenge, Maginnis got bloodwork done, and several of the markers were "going in the wrong direction, he said.
Maginnis said his strategy is absolutely workingso far and explained that he only eats half of what he orders so he can reduce his caloric intake. He saves the half he doesnt eat for his next meal.
The idea of restricting calories, anytime Ive lost weightin my life has always been (tied to that method). I actually was a wrestler, I boxed in the military. So there (are) times you have to make weight and you cut calories, he explained.
Sheinelle admitted that she originally thought Maginnis must be surviving on salads and water alone, but he shared an example of what he eats on an average day. And yes, burgers, fries and desserts are on the menu. But Maginnis swaps out soda for water and also skips snacking between meals.
Maginnis said that sharing his weight loss journey with TikTok users helps keep him accountable for his goals, especially since he weighs himself every day now and shares it with his viewers.
Like many people, Carson was curious to know why the TikToker chose to eat McDonald's in particular for 100 days straight.
"Because Im big (and) my name is Maginnis, so the nickname Big Mac has been thrown out at times. I figured, 'Why not embrace it?' And I like McDonalds," he said, adding that the fast food chain is not sponsoring him.
Maginnis said people often ask if he's hungry, since he's limiting his food intake.
"The answer is, well, of course. You have to get to that part of your stomach where you have some heat in your stomach," he said. "They call it hunger, I call it my incinerator turning on to burn off all the excess fat."
Maginnis said doctors have reacted to his diet in the comments of his TikTok videos with mixed opinions.
"I've had cardiologists that love it, and I've had cardiologists that hate it," he said.
Weighing in on Maginnis' belief that his health will be improved at the end of the challenge, registered dietitian Frances Largeman-Roth tells TODAY.com that it is possible to lose weight while eating fast food. But she emphasizes that weight loss isn't entirely about calorie restriction.
"While this plan seems to be working for Kevin right now, the weight loss will eventually plateau, and he will need to add physical activity or make additional changes to his diet to keep losing weight," she explains. "And lets remember that health isnt just about the number on the scale. Its also about cardiovascular health and other measures."
Fast food isn't generally something that experts advise eating too often, but Largeman-Roth says Maginnis' diet is safe "for the short term."
"However, everything that health professionals know about how to be healthy over time is missing from McDonalds food and other types of highly processed foods," she adds. "Including 25 to 30 grams of fiber daily, including legumes, nuts and seeds, fruits and vegetables and fatty fish in ones eating plan all contribute to longevity."
By missing out on key nutrients, Maginnis isn't doing anything to reduce his risk for heart disease, colon cancer, stroke or diabetes, Largeman-Roth says.
"Plus, even though Kevin is cutting his meals in half, hes still getting well over the recommended 2,300 milligrams of sodium daily. One bacon, egg and cheese biscuit contains 1,330 milligrams of sodium and a Big Mac has over 1,000 milligrams without ketchup or mustard," the dietitian explains.
Before anyone embarks on a similar diet to Maginnis', Largeman-Roth recommends considering long-term health goals and the impact that eating fast food daily can have on them.
"Its not so much that youre only eating burgers and fries. Its about what youre not eating for 100 days fiber-rich fruits, veggies, whole grains, nuts and seeds," she emphasizes.
Largeman-Roth also suggests consulting a health care professional before starting any weight loss routine. She did give Maginnis one major bit of kudos, though.
"I do like that Kevin is sticking to water instead of sodathats a smart choice," Largeman-Roth says.

Q: Im overweight and have Type 2 diabetes and want to start taking one of the medicines that everyone is clamoring for called semaglutide, I think. Is that a good idea? John G., Madison, Wisconsin A: Semaglutide was originally designed as a Type 2 diabetes medication, but when folks saw that it promoted weight loss, they started using it off label. Now one brand, Wegovy, is Food and Drug Administration approved for weight loss. Two other brands (with lower doses) are approved only for Type 2 diabetes. Theyre Ozempic and Rybelsus.
You need to talk with your doctor about your best approach to controlling your blood sugar levels. But its important to realize that whether you have Type 2 diabetes and/or are overweight and take semaglutide for weight loss, it only helps you shed pounds while youre taking it. Stop and its likely youll regain the weight you lost.
Thats because while semaglutide lowers the weight and fat content that your body wants you to maintain, it doesnt change that set point for good. And folks who are overweight or obese have established whats called the defended fat mass set point at a level that almost demands you maintain a higher amount of body fat.
Thats why making slow, permanent changes to your lifestyle choices (nutrition, sleep, exercise and stress management by building a posse, finding a purpose and enjoying play) is the best way to lose weight and keep it off.
Working with your physician, create a plan that leads to weight loss of a pound a week (two, max) by adopting an unprocessed, plant-based diet, finding physical activities you enjoy so they provide the equivalent of 10,000 steps daily, stopping bad habits (smoking anything, alcohol use and abuse), and making sure you get seven hours of quality sleep nightly. It may take a while, but you wont be stuck on a medication that does have potential side effects instead youll become healthier and happier every day. Unfortunately, a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention survey shows that only around 28% of American adults get the suggested 150 minutes of moderate exercise and two days of muscle strengthening work each week in rural areas it dips to 16%. So, remember to add two days a week of strength training to your new exercise routine.
As for jogging, it can be great exercise, but only if you respect your body. According to the AMAs series What Doctors Wish Patients Knew, that means following these steps.
Step 1: Step into the right shoes for your feet. Go to a store that has equipment designed to determine your foot structure and analyze your gait.
Step 2: Look for an online step-by-step from couch to running path program for suggestions and guidance.
Step 3: Always warm up before you start running. Lunges, hip stretches, calf stretches, you get the idea.
Step 4: Start slow. Begin with a walk five minutes, jog five minutes, walk five minutes routine.
Step 5: Listen to your body. If you jog and are sore or in pain, take the next day off. Do stretching; apply hot compresses; ice, if needed.

In 2013, the American Medical Association officially changed its position on obesity, advising medical practitioners that the condition is a chronic disease requiring medical treatment, not an individual's failure. In 2018, the National Institutes of Health published a paper pointing out that the media had not yet caught up to the AMA, and instead continued to perpetuate the false belief that obesity is only a matter of self-control.
In 2023, health journalists everywhere are finally catching up with the science, as well as exploring and explaining the social baggage that often prevents us from having fact-based conversations about body size.
Today we address two listener letters about NPR stories. The first story is an interview with an author of a newly released book on cultural myths about "fat" people. The second story is a look at a new and expensive weight-loss drug getting results, but not always covered by insurance. Both listeners offered comments and asked questions that poke at this gap between cultural assumptions and medical knowledge.
We looked closely at both stories, as well as NPR's work on the topic of obesity. Read on to see what we found.
And we spotlight two examples of great NPR journalism. The first is a look into the connection between workplace relationships and job satisfaction. The second is a series of stories on a virus research station in Guatemala looking to spot the next pandemic.

Covering stories about weight, size and health
Audience members recently wrote to us about two very different NPR stories related to coverage of body weight. We analyzed the two stories and asked a couple of journalists what reporters should consider when covering these issues.
Alex Park wrote on Jan. 9: All Things Considered has waded into double-think where obesity is normalized, and journalism no longer needs rigorous questioning around important public-health issues. The interview with Juana Summers of Aubrey Gordon ... allowed Gordon to gaslight obesity as a health-choice rather than a societal health crisis. ... All Things Considered has spent ample time identifying and calling out anti-science bias around the climate change argument, but amplifies anti-health propaganda and ignores science wherever "identity" is involved.
Host Juana Summers' All Things Considered interview with author and podcast co-host Aubrey Gordon mostly focused on body image and understanding of what "fatness" means. (A longer version was also published by Life Kit .) It was a conversation about Gordon's new book, "You Just Need To Lose Weight" and 19 Other Myths About Fat People.
At the beginning of the ATC piece, Gordon clearly states that obesity is not a choice: "Researchers have been clear for years that our body size isn't solely or even primarily the result of our own choices." She also discussed the scientific shortcomings of body mass index measurements, or BMI.
The ATC interview also featured Gordon's perspective on the word "fat." The word "obesity" does not appear in the ATC piece.
The focus of this story was appropriately placed on the social implications of "fatness." It's a worthy topic to explore, and Gordon is a credible source based on her personal experience and her recent work as a writer on this topic. Finally, given that the average American is overweight, or plus-sized or "fat," as Gordon would say, it's important to explore the cultural burdens placed on a significant part of the population.
Jessica Rainey wrote on Jan. 30: Firstly, I appreciate NPR's attempts to present a full and accurate picture of today's issues which is why I was greatly disappointed with [Morning Edition's] oversimplification of obesity and weight loss. ... [It] reduced the issue to "maybe I should try changing my diet myself and exercise ..." As if that is all it takes to lose weight and as if it is only a matter of willpower. ... Please do better.
Allison Aubrey's Morning Edition report on the "breakthrough" weight-loss drug Wegovy focused on the challenges some patients face getting their insurance to cover the costs. The story exposed the conundrum: The drug is expensive, $1,400 per month, and if patients stop taking it, the weight comes back.
As he interviewed Aubrey about her reporting, Morning Edition host Steve Inskeep says, "Well, some people listening to that might say, well, I really shouldn't be starting this drug. Maybe I should be trying to change my diet myself or doing a little more exercise." Aubrey responded, "I think most people would like to lose weight by diet and exercise. But we live in a society where people are sedentary, in part due to our jobs. ... And the unhealthiest foods are the cheapest foods."
Inskeep's statement was not intended to imply that willpower is the solution. (NPR has reported on the connection between obesity and other factors, like genetics.) Instead, he was giving voice to a question that many listeners might have as they learn about Wegovy. Aubrey's response and the interviews she conducted provided a nuanced view of what it takes to lose weight and, more specifically, how the affordability of drugs like Wegovy is affected by health care options.
NPR's take on coverage of weight and obesity
Those two stories are just some of many NPR has published about "fatness," BMI and obesity.
Tony Cavin, NPR's managing editor for standards and practices, wrote in an email that like "any other topic NPR journalists need to be respectful of their subjects, interview multiple sources and make sure that their reporting is based on science."
"There are stories about 'weight' and health and there are stories about 'weight' and body image. I think the distinction is usually quite clear," he wrote. "There is lots of evidence that weight is a health issue and we should cover it as such. When covering a story about someone trying to achieve a certain look, regardless of possible health effects, we cover that as well."
Cavin said NPR journalists rarely use the word "fat" and it's often in quotes. He said "overweight" and "obese" are more precise, and that NPR usually attributes the definitions of those words to the CDC while giving more context.
Other journalists' thoughts on terminology
The Associated Press Stylebook currently doesn't have specific guidance on the terms "overweight," "fat" or "obese." Paula Froke, editor of the AP Stylebook, wrote in an email that the topic is on their list to consider in the coming year. The team devotes significant research and discussion when developing guidelines, she said.
"Generally, we also advise using terms that an individual or group prefers," Froke said. "That could apply to terms such as 'obese,' 'fat' and 'overweight.'"
We also talked with Tara Haelle, an independent science journalist who advises about reporting on medical studies, including those on obesity, through the Association of Health Care Journalists. She acknowledges that the topic is challenging: "'Fat' is the curse word for certain people. And 'obesity' is the curse word for other people. That becomes really challenging as journalists because 'obesity' is the medical term." But by being more precise, journalists can be more accurate and inclusive, she said.
Haelle recommends that journalists:
"You can destigmatize being a certain size without saying that you should or shouldn't be that size," Haelle said. "Working to erase stigma doesn't imply condoning. ... We can work as the media to destigmatize these things without passing judgment on them."
We appreciate these recommendations. Across the news media, reporting on body weight as a medical and cultural issue is evolving to be clearer and more accurate. NPR is clearly part of this transformation. In the two very different stories we looked at, as well as other coverage, NPR provided new insights, fresh perspectives and solid facts. It's likely that journalism will continue to grow in its awareness of the many complexities in covering weight-related topics from both health and social standpoints. NPR Science Desk contributor Ari Daniel reported multiple stories about a small clinic and research outpost in rural western Guatemala called FunSalud, where locals look into illnesses. As part of NPR's series "Hidden Viruses: How Pandemics Really Begin," Daniel introduced us to the team who go out into the community to look for emerging diseases with pandemic potential. "If anything COVID and Zika and H1N1 have taught us, it's that you can't stick your head in the sand and hope that the next pandemic isn't going to arrive," said Dan Olson, a research director at the center.
