Is Drinking Diet Soda a Health Risk? – WebMD

May 5, 2017 -- About one in five Americans drinks diet soda every day, according to the CDC. Is that a good thing?

Numerous studies over the past several years have reported links between diet soda and weight gain, diabetes, heart problems, and other health issues. Most recently, headlines sounded alarms about a higher chance of dementia and stroke among diet soda drinkers.

That may sound worrisome, but experts say you dont need to clear the diet drinks out of your fridge just yet. Many questions must be answered before well know whether diet soda raises your chance of health problems.

Boston University researcher Matthew Pase, PhD, and colleagues examined 10 years of health information from nearly 3,000 American adults over 45 to count the number who had a stroke. They did the same for nearly 1,500 American adults over 60 to determine how many developed dementia.

After accounting for a variety of things that could influence their health, such as age, physical activity, and waist size, the researchers found that diet soda drinkers nearly tripled their odds of stroke and dementia, compared with those who drank no diet soda.

Scary, right? Not necessarily, says Pase. Only 81, or 5%, of the people in the study were diagnosed with dementia, and only 97, or 3%, had a stroke.

At the end of the day, were talking about small numbers of people, says Pase. I dont think that people should be alarmed.

Pase also makes clear that his studys results, published in April in the journal Stroke, dont explain the link. Do diet sodas cause health problems like stroke and dementia? Or do people who have higher chances of getting such health problems choose to drink diet soda, perhaps to try to cut sugar and calories in their diets? Pase cant say.

Other studies have also tied health concerns to diet soda broadly rather than to specific artificial sweeteners. (The FDA has approved six for use in drinks and food.) Like Pases study, they could not show whether diet soft drinks were to blame.

The authors of these studies suggest many explanations for the links between diet soda and health concerns. In addition to potentially changing gut bacteria, artificial sweetenersmay stimulate the appetite, which could lead to overeating. Researchers dont know yet whether these explanations will prove to be accurate.

David Ludwig, MD, PhD, says that studies like these raise important concerns about diet soft drinks, but they're not proof that we need to be worried.

We need more clinical trials, says Ludwig, an endocrinologist and professor of nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and author of Always Hungry.

Ludwig conducted a test in 2012. In it, he randomly divided 224 overweight or obese teens into two groups. One group continued their normal habit of drinking sugary sodas; the other group switched to diet sodas. After a year, the diet soda group had dropped a little bit of weight, compared with those who drank regular sodas. By the 2-year mark, however, the two groups were about the same.

In another clinical trial, participants who drank diet soda lost about 5 pounds more than water drinkers over a 12-week period. However, that study was funded by the American Beverage Association, a trade group that represents soda makers.

Overall, says Ludwig, clinical trials have shown that if you switch from sugary sodas to diet ones, your weight will benefit. However, no clinical trial has yet been long enough to answer whether diet sodas affect the odds of having diabetes or whether they are as safe as unsweetened drinks like water. Diabetes and obesity, Ludwig says, are the primary focus of concerns about diet soda.

Compared to unsweetened beverages, asks Ludwig, are they causing harm?

One possible explanation for the link between diet sodas and weight gain and diabetes risk: The sweeteners in diet soft drinks may trick you into overcompensating, or eating a greater number calories than you normally would, says Christopher Gardner, PhD, director of nutrition studies at the Stanford Prevention Research Center. This can happen in one of two ways.

The first, he says, is psychological. If you choose a no-calorie diet soda over a regular soda, you may reward yourself later in the day with a treat. And that treat may have more calories than you saved by avoiding the sugary soft drink.

Your brain chemistry may play a role as well. The sweetness in the diet soda may prime your brain to expect a calorie boost. When no calories are on the way, that could trigger your appetite and lead you to eat more.

Diet sodas may help you with weight loss if you dont overcompensate, but thats a big if, says Gardner, who's also a professor of medicine at Stanford University.

Ludwig suggests that drinking artificially sweetened beverages may affect your taste buds in ways that make you less likely to choose healthy foods.

You may find fruit less appealing because its less sweet than your soda, and vegetables may become inedible, he speculates.

Both Gardner and Ludwig acknowledge that their theories are just that: Theories.

The American Beverage Association said in a statement that the FDA and other health organizations consider artificial sweeteners safe, and no research has shown otherwise.

Scientific evidence does show us that beverages containing these sweeteners can be a useful tool as part of an overall weight management plan. Americas beverage companies support and encourage balanced lifestyles by providing people with a range of beverage choices -- with and without calories and sugar -- so they can choose the beverage that is right for them.

Seattle-based dietitian Angel Planells encourages people to choose water over soda of any kind. But, he says, diet soda can fit into your diet as long as you make other healthy food choices.

If you drink a diet soda, that wont make up for eating a super-size fast food meal, says Planells, a spokesman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Breaking the diet soda habit, if you choose to do so, can be tough, says Planells. He recommends starting with baby steps rather than going cold turkey. If you drink five or six diet sodas a day, drop down to two, to three, and then to one. Just be sure to drink water so you stay hydrated.

Ludwig advises people who want to get off sugary drinks to consider diet soda a temporary choice.

I tell my patients to continue making the transition to unsweetened beverages, he says. We know that diet sodas are better than sugary beverages in terms of body weight, but we dont know if better is actually good.

Cinnamon may reduce the harms of a high-fat diet – Medical News Today

A diet high in fat is considered a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, as it can lead to weight gain, diabetes, and other harmful conditions. New research, however, suggests that it may be possible to offset some of this risk by incorporating cinnamon in the diet.

Researchers found that rats fed a high-fat diet supplemented with cinnamon for 12 weeks gained less weight and abdominal fat and had healthier blood levels of fat, sugar, and insulin, when compared with rodents fed a high-fat diet without cinnamon.

Study co-author Vijaya Juturu, Ph.D., of OmniActive Health Technologies Inc in Morrison, NJ, and colleagues recently presented their findings at the American Heart Association's Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology/Peripheral Vascular Disease 2017 Scientific Sessions, held in Minneapolis, MN.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is an umbrella term for conditions that affect the heart and blood vessels, including heart attack, stroke, and heart disease.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States, killing around 610,000 people every year.

Diet plays a major role in CVD. An unhealthful diet - such as one high in fat - can cause obesity, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and other conditions that raise the risk of poor cardiovascular health.

According to Juturu, research has shown that cinnamon - a spice derived from the bark of trees from the Cinnamomum genus - contains a polyphenol that has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which may reduce some of the risk factors for CVD caused by poor diet.

For their study, the researchers set out to investigate whether cinnamon might help to reduce the harms associated with a high-fat diet.

For 12 weeks, the researchers fed rats a high-fat diet supplemented with cinnamon and compared them with rodents that were fed a high-fat diet without the spice (the controls).

The team found that rats whose diets were supplemented with cinnamon weighed less and developed less abdominal fat than those fed a high-fat diet without the spice. Rats fed a high-fat diet with cinnamon also had healthier blood glucose and insulin concentrations, as well as better lipid profiles, than the controls.

Additionally, the researchers found that rats that received cinnamon had fewer molecules associated with the storing of fat, as well as increased levels of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant molecules.

Antioxidants protect against oxidative stress, which is an imbalance of free radicals that has been associated with numerous health conditions, including heart attack and heart disease.

Based on their findings, Juturu and colleagues believe that cinnamon may decrease the damaging effects of a high-fat diet.

The team concludes:

"These results suggest CNM [cinnamon] supplementation reduces hyperlipidemia, inflammation, and oxidative stress through activating transcription factors (SREBP-1c, LXR-, NF-B, and Nrf2) and anti-oxidative defense signaling pathway."

People actually tried the Victoria’s Secret pre-show diet and it went horribly – The indy100

The Victorias Secret Fashion Show is a yearly spectacle. But while it may look easythe preparation sounds impossible.

YouTubers Candace Lowry and Michelle Khare tried the diet Victorias Secret models do leading up to the fashion show. They did two days of the models typical diet," recommended by their dietician, and then two days of the liquid diet theyre also allegedlydo.

For this, Lowry says the models do nine full days of just having protein smoothies, egg whites,a gallon of water, and work out twice a day. So thats what they did.

Day one started off with a promising combination of Oatmeal and eggwhites, fruit and greek yogurt. A lot of workouts and salads followed. And then, just liquids.

Khare said:

I am tired, just really really tired, because on this Victoria's Secret diet I can't really eat the things I want to eat. After I train I want to reward myself and instead I'm cooking vegetables right now as a snack. I guess that's the life of a model.

After the diet, she said:

The first two days, which were the regular diet days, were very manageable.

Lowry added:

Then, days three and four (egg whites and liquids only) , I had no energy.

Khare said:

It was really about survival. I had trouble sleeping too, because I was so hungry. It doesn't feel sustainable. It's not a healthy way to lose weight. No one, as a regular person, would go through this. And the models are supposed to represent thepeople buying the clothes, who are regular people.

Here's the video:

More: This model only ate 500 calories a day while working. Now she's shared what she looks like after giving it up

On the Society diet, you live on hors d’oeurves – The Daily Advertiser

Kris Wartelle Society & Causes Reporter(Photo: The Advertiser)Buy Photo

I started wondering about diets lately.

By wondering, I mean, wondering why everyone else is on one and Im not. I probably should be. Most everyone I know is on one of the following: The Caveman diet (they call it Paleo but I call it caveman). They can only eat meat and lettuce. I tried this once. I think I lasted a full day but I really dont remember. It could have been just half of that. There's the Green-only cleansing diet. I have several friends doing this. I have no idea what that entails, but I assume it is the same diet as above only without the animals(or meat). Anything green is cool.

Im good with that for the most part. Once, I ate only orange stuff all day. Not on purpose, it just turned out that carrots, oranges and Diet Sunkist were the only things I had handy. Dont ask me why thats not a real diet. If there is a green-only regimen, why cant there be an orange one? My guess is because people would figure out that Cheetos and cheese crackers are also orange and that would wreck everything. Who knows?

Daughter No. 1is always saying she cant eat anything white. Bread, rice, pasta, all that is a no. Id have to rule that one out because Im sure white chocolate would not be allowed, andthe minute you tell me I cant have it, all Id want is that.

Daughter No. 2became a vegetarian, but that was after she became a vegan. She went through that one in high school and it nearly killed me. There are only so many frozen, black bean veggie burgers with no animal broth added that one can consume. Andshe considered kale a necessity. Kale that we bought, but never figured out how to make properly. So, then it became brown kale. Brown stuff was not allowed on someones diet, but I cant remember which one.

I probably could start my own diet plan. Wed call it the Society diet. You know, it would sort of remind you of the Hollywood diet. If you follow the Society diet, you basically survive on hors doeurves and wine or whatever cocktail you like when you go out.

This diet also reminds me of the movie "Mermaids" with Cher and Winona Ryder.Remember that scene where she cant make any real food at home because she only knows how to make hors doeuvers? She even has to cut her kids sandwiches into little stars. I totally get that now.

Sugar is allowed on the Society diet because, well, it is in almost everything and it is impolite to turn it down in some circles.

Then, during Lent and the months of June and July, you dont go out at all and youlive on salad and vitamin water. That pretty much makes up for the rest of the year.

Im kidding, of course. Please dont try this at home unless you are a highly trained professional.

I think I prefer Ms. Ella Meaux's diet. She retired from Borden's after 56 years, at the age of 86. She said sheate ice cream every day. All I cansay is,Ms. Ella, whatever you did, it worked, so carry on!

Seattle Mayor Adds Diet Drinks to His Soda Tax ‘To Tackle White Privilege’ – Heat Street

The mayor of Seattle has altered the rules of his proposed soda tax whichwould fund education for minoritiesto include diet drinks because affluent white people tend toconsume them more.

Mayor Ed Murray of the staunchly liberal Seattle cityoriginally proposed the soda tax during hisstate of the city address in February.Under hisinitial plan, distributors of sugarydrinks would have to pay 2 cents per ounce.

It would cover sodas such as Coke and Pepsi, energy drinks like Red Bull, fruit drinks, sweetened teas and bottled coffees such as those sold by Starbucks.

The Mayorclaimed the tax would bring $16 million in revenue thatwould be spent on education programs aimed at reducing disparities between the citys white students and students of color.

But the mayor has updated the plan after the staff of the mayors office told him that the tax would actually disproportionatelyfall on poor minorities, who have higher rates of soda consumption than white residents.

Murray changed the bill, lowering the levy to 1.75 cents per ounce and included diet drinks because they are by favored by affluent white city residents, despite the fact that most diet drinks have no calories and therefore dont contribute to obesity.

According to Reason, taxing diet drinks has become an issue of equality to the mayor because they more likely to be consumed by upper middle class white people and therefore must be taxed as a way to fightwhite privileged institutionalized racism.

The white privilege tax may be a distraction for Murray, whos facing accusations from four men that he paid for sex and sexually abused them in the 1980s when they were teen boys. A high profile lawsuit from one of the men filed last month claims thatMurray raped and molested him over several years, beginning in 1986 when the man was a 15-year-old high-school dropout.Murray has denied the accusations.

Spin class at Vive fitness center benefits Habitat for Humanity – Wilkes Barre Times-Leader

KINGSTON More than five dozen attendees made their way to Vive Health and Fitness Saturday morning, ready to sweat it out for a good cause.

The gym held its second annual Spin for Habitat, offering three spinning classes to help benefit the Wyoming Valley Habitat for Humanity. Classes were 50 minutes of high-intensity resistance training and designed for all levels of cyclers, ranging from long-distance to hills and intervals. Instructors Diane Butwin and Sean Tompkins headed the groups.

The event was created to go in part with the Spencer Martin Memorial Bike Ride for Habitat, which will take place Sunday in the Back Mountain. In its ninth year, the 35-mile bike ride was created in memory of Spencer Martin, who was an avid Habitat for Humanity volunteer and former organization president.

While Martin wasnt involved in the cycling community, Wyoming Valley Habitat Executive Director Karen Evans Kaufer said the organization wanted to find a way to honor his memory and continue the organizations mission, and the bike ride was born. To honor Martin and assist Habitat for Humanity, Martins daughter and granddaughter, Kim and Hillary Koehl, attended one of the spinning sessions at Vive and were greeted with applause from attendees.

In the Wyoming Valley for the past 25 years, the Habitat for Humanity builds simple, decent homes to sell to families who would not qualify for homeownership otherwise. Traditionally, the organization builds at least one house per year, with more than 25 homes built in the area overall.

Currently, Habitat is working on a house in Parsons, then moving to a Pittston location upon its completion. The organization relies on volunteers for labor and donated materials to build the homes, which helps keep the selling costs low and mortgages manageable for recipients.

Another source of funding for the Wyoming Valley Habitat is their ReStore. Located in Nanticoke, the Restore sells unused donated building materials for the projects at a steep discount, supplying buyers with great deals and helping to continue funding for more homes.

Habitat is a hand up not a hand out, Kaufer said. I think a lot of people have the impression that we give these houses away for free, and that is not what we do. Our homeowners have a stake in their homeownership, they pay a mortgage just like you and me, and theyve contributed these many hours of sweat equity they need to have a downpayment. We want people that own our homes to be invested in their community.

Sweat equity, she said, is what the program calls the 200 hours of volunteer labor an applicant must complete on building their home before sealing the deal. Once the hours are complete, the hours translate into a down payment and the applicant can then become a homeowner. While recipients of a Habitat home do pay a mortgage, they have a zero-interest rate, with all payments funding the next house being built.

Kaufer also added that aside from the sweat equity, an intensive application also comes with a home, adding that the process can take roughly one year to complete. It includes various background checks and interviews with family members, friends and more. Applicants must also earn between 30 to 60 percent of the countys median income and live within Luzerne County for at least a year, she said.

This is not a quick-fix. Its not an emergency housing fix for anyone. Its someone who can dedicate the time and energy into helping build their own home, she said.

As members of the second group came out of the spinning class sweaty, a new group was ready to go in for the third and final class of the day.

Habitat for Humanity Vice President and Vive member Kevin Engelman thanked the attendees and explained how their contribution will help someone in the Wyoming Valley get their first home. An admitted lover of cycling, Engelman said it made sense to add an indoor cycling event to the outdoor bike ride.

We wanted to provide a component that would allow riders who dont ride outside to come in and enjoy a great facility, and really allow more people to enjoy and help out the community, he said of the event. So we brought the Wyoming Valley Habitat and Vive together last year and were able to start the indoor event here, and its really taken off.

He said that the community has had a great response to both events, bringing in both indoor and outdoor cyclists, as well as regular residents.

Vive general manager Heather Stearns said the fitness center is more than happy to participate in community events, and is honored to assist the Wyoming Valley Habitat for Humanity.

Vive is very big with doing community events that sponsor whole and health wellness, she said. This is our second year working with Habitat to give back to community, to help a deserving family of community get a home that may not be able to otherwise.

Tips to gain confidence at the fitness club – Foster’s Daily Democrat

By Melissa EricksonMore Content Now

Gym-timidation is a real thing. If you're not comfortable and confident, it can be hard to walk through the door to the fitness club. It affects both fitness novices and experienced pros who are new to a class or a complicated machine.

If you're struggling, you're not alone. Rachel Prairie, live programming coach at Anytime Fitness, offers some advice on how to overcome gym anxiety and gain the confidence to get fit.

How to start

"There are many gyms, and like choosing a hotel or restaurant, the options can be overwhelming. You know you need to make your health a priority, but how do you possibly choose?" Prairie said. "Joining a friend's or family member's gym may be just the push you need to get started (because we all know it's a little easier to get your butt there when you're accountable to someone else), but there are a handful of other important things to keep in mind."

Consider this your trusty checklist so you can feel confident and comfortable when you shop for a gym.

1. Is it near your home or office? Convenience is king.

2. Is it open when you want to go? Much like convenience of location, if you can't access the gym at a time that is conducive to your schedule, it will be hard to stick to a routine.

3. Would you feel comfortable around the people? Choose a gym that is welcoming and full of people just like you.

5. Do you have enough support? You're not just looking at the gym-goers. Consider the staff and other resources as well.

6. Does it offer the equipment and amenities you want?

7. Is it clean? Be sure to visit during high-traffic times and see how the gym looks.

8. Does it fit into your budget? It's what most newbies consider first, but it's one of many considerations.

Confidence will come

"When you join a gym, don't think twice about what other people are thinking. Just walk in with an open mind. I hope you realize that everyone is welcome there. If you see someone at the gym who deserves a compliment, don't be shy. You might just make their day," Prairie said.

Get fit gear

"There's really no right or wrong way to dress for the gym, formal wear aside, of course. Whether it's an oversized T-shirt and shorts or a color-coordinated outfit, you want your gym bag filled with options that are comfortable, flattering, flexible and make you feel good," Prairie said.

Here are some other things to think about when creating your ideal workout wardrobe:

1. Could you go for a walk in it?

"If you're just getting started on your fitness journey, you may have some reservations about the process. Wear something that you could see yourself walking down the street in comfortably," she said.

2. How many days a week are you working out?

"I work out five days a week, which means I have five great workout ensembles (top, pants/shorts, sports bra, socks, etc.) to last me until the next wash cycle," Prairie said.

3. Make sure you like what you're wearing.

"You'll read articles about the proper material to wear or what pants work the best. Bottom line: If you don't feel comfortable in your clothes, you won't want to leave the house, let alone walk into the gym. Choose clothes that are lightweight, made of breathable material and aren't too far outside of your comfort zone," she said.

4. Protect your feet.

"This may seem obvious, but choose shoes based on the kind of exercise you're doing. It's important for form, comfort and injury prevention. For instance, you wouldn't wear a hiking shoe to walk on a treadmill. Don't be afraid to ask for help when choosing a shoe. And pick something that fits your personality, which will make them even easier to wear," Prairie said.

Fitness may be hard, but the journey is worth it.

"Gather things that inspire and motivate you like success stories," Prairie said.
