Iraqi refugee turned to Zumba to recover from chemotherapy; now she leads the classes – Grand Island Independent

Hadeel Haider has lost enough sleep in the past decade.

The Iraqi refugee had nightmares in her native country when it was ravaged by war. She heard explosions 24 hours a day. Her husband received death threats, and they walked their children to school so they wouldnt be kidnapped.

In her new Omaha home, she tossed and turned after she was diagnosed with cancer.

Now, in remission and settled into life in America, she stays awake imagining choreography to the upbeat Latin tunes playing in her head.

While recovering from chemotherapy treatments, Haider, 48, discovered Zumba. The dance fitness classes set to Latin music are more than exercise to her. Zumba has become a rewarding way to connect with others, and it helped her transition from a cancer patient to survivor. Now Haider is a certified instructor.

When I teach a class, I feel like Im on top of the world. American people following a refugee from Iraq teaching them dancing it was something out of my wildest dream, Haider said.

Haider moved to Omaha in 2009. It took nearly three years for her to adapt to life in the U.S. She had to learn English and adjust to a new culture. She balanced working 12 hours a day at two jobs.

And the family would soon encounter health problems, first with her 18-year-old son. He developed a bump on his head that his parents worried was cancer. After several tests, doctors determined it was benign.

While dealing with that, Haider put herself second. For months, she pushed aside her own health problem: an itching and swelling in her groin.

At the urging of her husband, Haider met with doctors at the Nebraska Medical Center. In 2012 she was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma.

Lymphomas are a type of blood cancer that occur when white blood cells behave abnormally. Hodgkin lymphoma is a more treatable form.

We were waiting, crying and praying, Haider said. It was mixed feelings because I was very ill and very sad. But at least it was Hodgkin.

Haider would require six months of chemotherapy treatments. After three months, doctors wanted to give her a stronger dosage.

I was devastated all over, just like the first day, Haider said. The doctor said, Its treated, but not cured. I want you to be cured.

By the time Haider started the second round, her hair was long gone. Her skin was dark and dry. Her mouth was full of sores.

She also started feeling extreme pain in her muscles, joints and bones. She frequently felt weak and passed out, requiring blood transfusions.

Dealing with her diagnosis was challenging, especially after being uprooted from her home in Iraq.

We were still new. Im still learning, Haider said. It was tough, but at the same time, when we heard that this is the right place for treating lymphoma, we were also relieved.

By November, Haider was done with treatments and declared free of cancer. For nearly two months after treatment she attempted to regain her strength. But she still struggled to feel like herself.

Walking across the room felt taxing. Bending over to pick up something from the floor made her feel like she was 90.

Haider packed on about 35 extra pounds during her treatments. Some patients gain weight during treatments and others lose weight, said Dr. James Armitage, who treated Haider.

Exercise is particularly helpful to cancer patients and survivors, Armitage said. Studies show cancer patients who exercise have a better quality of life, in addition to its more well-known benefits, according to the American Cancer Society.

Maintaining a healthy weight, eating right and being physically active may help reduce the risk of a second cancer as well as chronic diseases, according to the organization.

The cancer society recommends that survivors take part in regular physical activity, return to daily activities as soon as possible after diagnosis, exercise 150 minutes a week and include strength training exercises twice a week.

A friend encouraged Haider to try the Livestrong at the YMCA program. The 12-week exercise program is designed to help cancer survivors reclaim their health by building muscle and strength, increasing flexibility and endurance, as well as improving confidence and self-esteem.

The program isnt designed as a support group, but participants often use it as one, said Amy Roux, project manager for the program.

Haider and her group members asked questions such as how to deal with muscle cramps, whether to call themselves survivors or how to receive a compliment on a wig.

It really helped me because we are sharing the same symptoms, the same side effects, the same feelings, Haider said.

The goal of the program is for participants to find a type of exercise they enjoy and will stick with. For Haider, it was Zumba.

Haider started taking classes about a month after the Livestrong program ended. She attended classes three to four days a week. She worked her way from the back of class to the front about six weeks later. Eventually, she realized she could lead class.

By the time Zumba training rolled around, Haider had lost some of the weight she gained during chemo, and her hair was growing back. After she earned her certification, Haider landed a class as an instructor at the YMCA in Valley and two classes at the Maple Street YMCA, 7520 Maple St.

Helen Bartee has been attending Haiders Zumba classes at the Maple Street location for about two years. Haiders fun-loving attitude keeps Bartee and other attendees coming back.

Bartee was one of six participants in a class on a recent Thursday. They faced a mirror-lined wall and watched as Haider went through the fast-paced routines, tapping her toes, clapping her hands and waving her arms above her head.

She breaks it down and keeps throwing new things at us, Bartee said. Shes just so personable.

Organizers of YMCA programs and class members have been struck by Haiders energy and her passion to connect with others. Her resilience to overcome cancer and channel her enthusiasm into Zumba has been inspiring, they said.

People discover they really like yoga or Zumba or water aerobics. But for her to take it to that next level, thats very inspiring, Roux said. To really have a success story like hers, its heartwarming.

Berkeley mom: state cutback puts disabled son at risk – Asbury Park Press

Berkeleyresident Pat Falotico tried to take her developmentally disabled son Johnny to a local gym, so he could get some exercise. Instead, he got overwhelmed.

It was too loud, too many people, too much stimuli, Pat said. The machines were a little intimidating. We had a gym membership for one year, but it didnt work out.

Then she found a one-on-one fitness program sponsored by the states Division of Developmental Disabilities. Twice per week, Johnny gets a home visit from a trainer who leads him through a one-hour workout.

Its really helped him a great deal, Pat Falotico said.

Finding work for the disabled is their mission

Now that program is being discontinued, and the Faloticos are exasperated.

Its devastating, Pat said. Hes not going to have anything else. Theyre recommending that we get gym memberships.

Johnny Falotico, 23, is speech-impaired, has difficulty processing sounds and needs help walking up and down steps because his legs are different lengths. As the gym experiment failed, Johnnys triglyceride level ballooned past 600, a high number that increased his risk for heart disease. The one-on-one therapy has reigned that in.

Hes lost 10-15 pounds, his triglyceride level is down to 220 and hes drinking at least three bottles of water a day, Pat Falotico said. Before, the only thing he drank was iced tea.

As parents of the developmentally disabled will tell you, the burden of care falls on them after formal schooling (which includes physical therapy) ends at age 21. The one-on-one fitness program was a progressive stroke begun nine years ago to help alleviate that.

Some people with developmental disabilities cerebral palsy, autism, Down syndrome they cant join the gym like you and I, said Howard Schulze, president of Hometown Trainers LLC, a home-fitness company that has29 trainers working with more than 100 participants inthe DDD's one-on-one program. This is some of the only physical activity they get.

In its place, Schulze said, the DDD is offering paid gym memberships and integration intoexercise classes for peoplewithout disabilities. A spokesperson for New Jerseys Division of Human Services, which oversees the DDD, did not respond to an Asbury Park Press inquiry on the matter.

Some people with developmental disabilities will benefit from this, but the one-on-one programs are vital for others," Schulze said. "For them, their functionality will regress.

That is Pat Faloticos concern about Johnny, whose one-on-one visits are scheduled to end in September. Its also the reason why a few dozen protesters demonstrated outside of DDD headquarters in Hamilton Monday.

What were fighting for are the people who will fall through the cracks," Schulze said. "The state is just pulling the rug out from under their feet.

What To Do When You Get Blamed For Your Coworker’s Screw-Up – Fast Company

By Courtney C.W. Guerra 05.02.17 | 11:00 am

Getting blamed for a colleagues screw-up doesnt just feel crappy, it also puts you in a difficult spot. If you say nothing, youre taking the fall for someone elses mistake, which might reflect on how well (or not) your boss thinks you can do your job. But if you speak up, you risk seeming petty or even dishonest. So you have to proceed with extreme caution.

Heres what to do the next time you find yourself in that situation:

First things first, its almost never a good idea to just silently accept blame for something that isnt actually your fault. There are exceptions to every rule, but here are the only two circumstances where its a reasonable strategy:

1. Its such a minor issue that no one actually cares. This only applies if the supervisors or other stakeholders involved are pretty blas about it, and if its an isolated incident (not the latest mistake by someone whose work is generally shoddy). If it feels like youll just confuse things further by trying to explainthat itll involve a level of detail that the situation doesnt warrantthen you can hold off.

2. You want to do a favor for the mistake-makerand its a relatively small error. If its a colleague whos recently done you a solid, or someone with more to lose (an up-and-coming junior person who doesnt have a great relationship with their boss, for instance), then you can keep quiet. However, be careful about this one, because you dont want to be covering up someones chronic poor performance.

Notice that theres no No. 3) To be nice or No. 4) To avoid having a tough conversation. Being forthcoming about process problems doesnt make you a tattletale or a jerkit makes you a forthright professional who recognizes when an organization isnt functioning properly. Managers need to know if someones not pulling their weightthey cant do their jobs if theyre misinformed about who needs discipline or extra coaching.

Related: 5 Strategies To Stop Coworkers From Interrupting You All The Time

So if you decide keep your mouth shut when accused of someone elses error, make absolutely sure youre doing it for one of these two reasons, and not out of a misplaced sense of responsibility for other peoples mistakes.

Lets assume that none of your coworkers are outright liars. Realistically that might not always be the case, but I want to believe that most people are fundamentally honestand more importantly, universal benefit of the doubt is the best approach strategically. If someones a crook, thatll become apparent eventually, and you can watch it happen from your position on the high road.

The next step is following up with the right people. Who those people are will depend on your role, your relationships with your coworkers, and the nature of the mistake.

If youve been implicated in writing, then you want to make sure the truth gets documented as well. In some caseswith coworkers you know have integrityyou might even forward the original message to them with a note like, Billy seems to think I messed up the sales projections, but didnt your team work on that? A good colleague will probably jump into the conversation to clear your name, but not everyone will take the hint. (Keep this in mind whenever youre the one in the wrongreliably taking responsibility for your own mistakes will prove that youre trustworthy.)

Related: The Scientifically Proven Way To Deal With Difficult Coworkers

With less dependable actors in the mix, youll have to do the dirty work yourselfbut as with any of these delicate situations, you want to be as dispassionate as possible. You might suspect there was some creative license involved with someone elses explanation, but dont imply that anyone was being intentionally misleading. Just stick to the facts: Hi all, I just wanted to clear up the workflow on this project since there seems to be some confusion. The sales projections actually came from Tinas team, so hopefully she can explain the inaccuracies. And then you copy Tina on the reply.

Basically, the maneuver here is to pretend like your reputation isnt at stake, in spite of how you really feel. If someone told you, New York is on the West Coast of the United States, you wouldnt get all how dare youyoud just correct them based on the factual reality of the world we all live in. Thats the tone youre going for here as well: A kind of bemused vibe of, Im not sure why you got this wrong, but no worrieslets clear it up once and for all.

For complex or super-serious situations, it might be wise to enlist your manager as your ally (or another senior colleague who knows the whole story, if the accusation originates with your own boss). If the screw-up involves a lot of peopleor one particular person whos known to be especially pricklythen a supervisor can help get to the bottom of things. An informal (face-to-face or phone) conversation is probably best, although e-mail will work if necessary. As always, be calm and factualand as succinct as possibleas you lay out the details and then solicit advice on how to handle it. Even if your boss tells you to deal with it yourself, that preliminary discussion will prove invaluable if things escalate.

Documentation can save your hide in these situations, but if the mistake originates in the course of verbal conversation, the only official evidence will be highly fallible human memory. Someone still has to back down, thoughand sometimes, for whatever reason, that person is going to have to be you. But that doesnt mean you have to admit outright defeat. In the same neutral mistakes were made tone as in all these other examples, you can issue a verdict of, Well, I remember it differently, but whats done is done, and I suppose this is a lesson to take better notes. (And then, needless to say, you do start keeping a more robust record so that you dont find yourself in this position again.)

Sometimes when a big project goes awry, theres no clear target for blame, and so it just kind of splashes all over everyone involved. If that happensor you otherwise get dinged for something you really couldnt controltry not to let it get to you. A crusade to indict the real culprit isnt a good look. If your work is otherwise good, and youve proven yourself to be an upright citizen in the office, your reputation can safely survive a few mistakeseven the ones that arent actually yours.

Nigella Lawson weight loss – how the celebrity chef got her svelte figure WITHOUT dieting – Express.co.uk

GETTY

The 57-year-old has always been pro self-indulgence, having once suggested taking a doughnut and making french toast with it.

Back in 2015, she criticised obsessive diet culture and clean eating because, for her, life is all about balance.

She told Good Housekeeping Magazine: I wouldnt want a life where I lived on chia seed pudding, just as I wouldnt want to life where I lived on eggs Benedict or steak and chips.

I love kale and Im an avocado obsessive. But life is about balance, its not about being smug. You dont eat things because you think theyre good for you.

I have never been on a diet to try to lose weight. I feel like I havent lost weight, but Im possibly in better shape. I am doing a rather slow form of yoga now called lyengar.

Also, you can guarantee that what people think will be good for you this year, they wont next year.

So how did curvy Nigella get in such great shape? Surgery (but not the kind you might expect) apparently.

According to the Telegraph in 2015, Nigella said: I had a very glamorous operation - a double bunionisation. I couldnt walk to the fridge afterwards and, actually, its quite a good diet.

Not because I stopped eating but because you can say to someone, Can you get me a slice of cake? but its kind of embarrassing to say, And now could you get me a second slice?

No one should be out on this earth to go on a diet. No one should eat themselves ill either.

Sarah Millican has always been one to joke about her weight and diet in the past, but in her most recent posts on Instagram and Twitter the comedian from South Shields has been flaunting a much slimmer figure, and has revealed the diet to go with it.

The 41-year-old has been posting pictures of her writing snacks, which quite often consist of fruit - thought she admits its a struggle to get them down her.

She posted another picture of her breakfast - porridge with fruit.

In less than a year, she lost 92 pounds and feels better than ever – Today.com

When her friend suggested everyone squeeze onto the couch for a picture at a party in 2012, Harshi Suraweera put on a big smile and thought little of it. But the reaction her friends and family had to the photo on Facebook stunned her. People made comment after comment about how surprised they were to see how much weight she gained.

It made me more depressed and I burst into tears for days, Suraweera, 29, told TODAY via email.

But that moment made her realize that after a lifetime of being overweight she need to do something different.

I decided to change my figure and started going to the gym and eating healthy, said the nurse who lives in Melbourne, Australia.

But it wasnt easy. At first, she went to the gym three days a week for 45 minutes, but struggled to walk for five minutes on the treadmill. To build up her endurance, Suraweera kept walking at a slow pace. As her stamina improved, she could increase the speed and time that she walked. Then, she started running and visiting the gym six days a week.

I ... was only concerned with losing the weight, she said.

Harshi Suraweera was overweight her whole life, but mean comments in response to a picture of her on Facebook motivated her to change her diet and start exercising.

RELATED: How a cruel comment prompted this mom to lose 90 pounds

She also changed her diet, cutting out sugar and processed foods. Instead of eating two pizzas in one sitting, two or three plates of rice, or drinking gallons of soda, she ate meals filled with lean proteins, vegetables, fruits and other low-carb foods. In 10 months, Suraweera dropped 92 pounds, from 235 to 143 pounds on her 5-foot-6-inch frame.

My health has completely improved and I feel energetic all the time, she said.

While she first relied heavily on cardio to lose the weight, she has spent the past four years weightlifting.

Lifting tones my body as well increasing strength and keeping me fit, which I enjoy a lot, Suraweera said.

She feels better about how she looks and feels, but she remains surprised by how people treat her now.

The outside world sees me different(ly) than when I was overweight. I seem to get a bit more attention. People don't avoid me like before, she said.

Suraweera lost 92 pounds in less than a year. She has kept it off for four years.

RELATED: 7 women on what it's really like to lose over 100 pounds

Suraweera has maintained her weight loss since 2013 and shares her progress with her 110,000 Instagram followers. Here are her tips for those hoping to lose weight:

While she was able to drop the weight in less than a year, keeping it off and toning her body has been a longer process. Its important to remember it takes years to put the weight on and it takes years to take it off.

It doesn't happen overnight. It's a slow process. But with hard work and dedication anything is possible, she said.

Suraweera visited the gym for many months before she could run on a treadmill. But starting with just five minutes and building up helped her drop weight. Making any small health change can have an impact on peoples health.

Start slowly, then build yourself up and keep pushing, she said.

If it feels too difficult to work out on your own, for example, Suraweera recommended working with a trainer. If the first diet you try isnt working for you, try a different plan. Asking for help or modifying can help you reach your goals.

Over the past four years, Suraweera has been weightlifting, which helps her maintain her 92-pound weight loss.

RELATED: Combined, this couple lost 298 pounds in a year by following these 3 steps

When Suraweera hit plateaus, she thought of all the dresses she wished she could wear.

That was motivation, she said. But the ultimate motivation was the results I saw within myself, that kept me pushing myself.

My advice for anyone wanting to start their journey is to take the first step, doesn't matter how small it is, she said.

MRI Shows Slower Knee Degeneration When Patients Lose Weight – Diagnostic Imaging

Magnetic resonance images showed significantly lower cartilage degeneration among patients who lost weight, according to a study published in the journal Radiology.

The researchers from the University of California San Francisco investigated the association of weight loss with progression of cartilage changes at MR imaging over 48 months in overweight and obese participants compared with participants of stable weight. Body mass index (BMI) over 25 kg/m2 was considered overweight and for obese, 30 kg/m2.

For this research, we analyzed the differences between groups with and without weight loss, said lead author, Alexandra Gersing, MD, said in a release. We looked at the degeneration of all knee joint structures, such as menisci, articular cartilage and bone marrow.

Gersing is from the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging at UCSF.

Four centers participated in the trial that included 398 women and 242 men who were overweight or obese; they were a mean age of 62.9 years. They had risk factors for osteoarthritis or mild to moderate radiographic findings of osteoarthritis. The total group (640 subjects) was categorized into three groups according to their weight loss over 48 months:

1. Weight loss of more than 10 percent (82 subjects)

2. Weight loss of 5 percent to 10 percent (238 subjects)

3. Stable weight (320 subjects)

Two radiologists assessed cartilage and meniscus defects on right knee 3-T MR images at baseline and 48 months by using the modified Whole-Organ Magnetic Resonance Imaging Score (WORMS). Progression of the sub-scores was compared between the weight loss groups by using multivariable logistic regression models.

The results showed over 48 months, adjusted mean increase of cartilage WORMS was significantly smaller in the 5 percent to 10 percent weight loss group and even smaller in the group with less than 10 percent weight loss when compared with the stable weight group. The percentage of weight change was also significantly associated with increase in cartilage WORMS.

The researchers concluded that subjects who lost weight over 48 months showed significantly lower cartilage degeneration, as assessed with MR imaging; rates of progression were lower with greater weight loss.

The most exciting finding of our research was that not only did we see slower degeneration in the articular cartilage, we saw that the menisci degenerated a lot slower in overweight and obese individuals who lost more than 5 percent of their body weight, and that the effects were strongest in overweight individuals and in individuals with substantial weight loss, Gersing said in the release. Our study emphasizes the importance of individualized therapy strategies and lifestyle interventions in order to prevent structural knee joint degeneration as early as possible in obese and overweight patients at risk for osteoarthritis or with symptomatic osteoarthritis.
