The Way Nature Intended – PetProductNews.com

Consumers are more aware of the connection between whole foods and health in their own diets, and, as such, they are choosing frozen raw foods for their dogs.

By Lizett Bond

Published: 2017.04.28 06:12 PM

Pet owners are eager to ensure the diet consumed by their dogs will contribute to a long and healthy life. As consumers look to more natural or ancestral mealtime selections, frozen raw foods are gaining in popularity.

More than ever before, pet owners realize that ingredient quality is paramount, said Kyle Frautnick, marketing director for Primal Pet Foods in Fairfield, Calif.

Justin Magnuson, vice president of sales and marketing for Raw Bistro Pet Fare in Cannon Falls, Minn., agreed, noting a variety of reasons for the uptick in consumer demand for frozen raw options, including the personal connection between whole foods and health.

Customers are reading and comparing labels, Frautnick said. Its imperative to offer a better source of nutrition, as an alarming number of our beloved animals are being diagnosed with diet-related disease.

Diseases such as cancer, diabetes, allergies and chronic weight gain have affected a large percentage of the pet population, said Bette Schubert, co-founder and senior vice president of sales for Bravo Pet Foods in Manchester, Conn. As a result, veterinarians are recommending all-natural, limited-ingredient dietary alternatives to manage these conditions.

Another major factor in the growth of raw comes down to basic word-of-mouth, Schubert said. One pet owner notices that the pet of a neighbor or friend just looks better, has lost weight, has more energy or doesnt seem to be suffering from a condition that has plagued them for years.

Improved skin and coat, reduced stool quantity and odor, superior dental hygiene, and improved energy, vitality, and fitness are just some of the benefits offered with a complete and balanced raw frozen diet, according to Frautnick.

The Big Bad Woof is a well-known proponent of raw feeding in the Washington, D.C., area, and co-owner Julie Paez said that often, customers walking in are predisposed to a raw diet and seeking a wider variety of these foods for their dogs.

We also have customers that have tried other diets in an attempt to clear issues with their dog, including kibble, canned and prescription products, she said. After running the gamut, theyll come to us, and well suggest raw food, which knocks out most of the problems that they have been struggling with.

Raw food is so clean, Paez said. Its not processed; all of the nutrients are available immediately. With cooked kibble, half of the good stuff in the meat is lost.

However, consumer interest in frozen raw dog food can also be regional, and in more rural areas, where pet owners might own multiple dogs, including strays that have been taken in, a raw diet could be prohibitive to feed in terms of cost.

At Woof Gang Bakery, we recognize that a raw diet is not ideal for every customer, so it is important that our owners get to know their customers when selecting the best pet diet, said Samantha Cohen, vendor relations manager and corporate buyer for the chain, which is headquartered in Orlando, Fla.

Bill Trufant, co-owner of B&B Pet Stop in Mobile, Ala., noted a lack of demand for frozen raw foods in his store.

Its a different market here in Mobile, he said. We dont sell frozen raw in our storethere just isnt a call for it.

In answer to consumer demand for whole, species-appropriate nutrition, manufacturers are offering a broader range of frozen raw selections.

The anticipated summer rollout of the Lamb Entre from Raw Bistro Pet Fare will feature 100 percent grass-fed lamb sourced from Midwest family farms.

Were in the process of fine-tuning the formula with renowned canine nutritionist Steve Brown, said Justin Magnuson, vice president of sales and marketing for Raw Bistro Pet Fare in Cannon Falls, Minn. Because the nutritional profile of every meat is different, we dont use a standard premix in any of our frozen entres and formulate custom premixes calibrated to each meat.

Introduced last summer, Instinct Raw Boost Mixers provide an easy way for pet owners to introduce the nutrition of raw to their pets meal by topping kibble with frozen raw bites, said Shelby Wisniewski, director of integrated marketing for Instinct Pet Food, a brand of St. Louis-based Natures Variety.

The two best-selling recipes in the Stella & Chewys frozen raw Dinner Patties for Dogs line, Stellas Super Beef and Chewys Chicken, are now available in a 12-pound value pack, said Lee Hessenthaler, director of marketing for the Oak Creek, Wis., company.

The new value pack uses the same ingredients as the 6-pound packages and features 95 percent meat, organs and ground bone, Hessenthaler said.

Each pack includes 24 8-ounce patties, offering an option to pet owners with large-breed dogs or multidog households.

Providing a solution to thoseseeking nontraditional proteins for their dogs, the Wild Boar recipe recently joined the Stella & Chewys lineup of frozen raw exotic proteins. The recipe is available in both 6-pound Dinner Patties and 4-pound Dinner Morsels, Hessenthaler said.

Sifting through available dog food options is often overwhelming to pet owners, said Bette Schubert, co-founder and senior vice president of sales for Bravo Pet Foods in Manchester, Conn.

They may hear or read something that piques their interest but need knowledgeable, informed help in the decision-making process, she said. That assistance typically falls to the retailer, who has day-to-day contactwith the consumer.

A sales team able to discuss the features and benefits of a raw product, and distinguish between the various brands and choices, will serve to buildcustomer trust and loyalty, Schubert added.

When it comes to raw diets, education is key, said Samantha Cohen, vendor relations manager and corporate buyer for Woof Gang Bakery, a chain with headquarters in Orlando, Fla. All of our franchise owners are able to discuss the nutritional benefits of raw food, and describe how it is safely packed and handled in the high-pressure pasteurization process.

Education and expertise are fundamental in addressing misconceptions regarding feeding frozen raw.

Not everybody is ready to do raw food; theres a lot of misunderstanding and resistance, said Julie Paez, co-owner of The Big Bad Woof in Washington, D.C. Consumers fear salmonella, and Ive even heard, Its going to turn my dog into a wild animal, and hell eat the cat. However, acceptance can just be a matter of a pet owner reaching a point where all avenues have been exhausted and they are now open to trying raw.

For these reasons, a personal understanding of feeding a frozen raw diet can help in assisting consumers with dietary selections, Paez said.

Approximately 60 percent of staffers at The Big Bad Woof feed frozen raw to their own pets, so they understand it, she said.

To forge a mastery of the pros and cons of raw versus processed diets, staffers participate in training programs provided by various raw food manufacturers.

This type of instruction is critical to ensuring our staff is getting that block of knowledge and information, said Pennye Jones-Napier, co-owner of The Big Bad Woof. Not just through the manufacturer, but also through our staff meetings.

Consumers are paying attention to ingredients and, in turn, are looking for retailers and associates who can speak to whats important to them, said Shelby Wisniewski, director of integrated marketing for Instinct Pet Food, a brand of St. Louis-based Natures Variety.

Asking the right questions and offering the right information is important when guiding pet parents to frozen raw, she said.

In marketing and merchandising frozen raw dog food, retailers can endeavor to tell a story by building the category and presenting multiple brands that will speak to the consumer in a clear, direct manner, said Kyle Frautnick, marketing director for Primal Pet Foods in Fairfield, Calif.

Many retailers choose to merchandise products in an entire made in the USA section, Frautnick said. This helps the customer find the products they are looking for.

Shopping local is high on the agenda for shoppers at The Quirky Pet in Montpelier, Vt., said owner Cindra Conison. For this reason, Vermont Raw Pet Food, which offers ground chubs of chicken and turkey, has a loyal following.

And, of course, made in the USA is essential here, she said.

Embracing the category also contributes to sales success.

Our most successful retailers practice what they preach, said Justin Magnuson, vice president of sales and marketing for Raw Bistro Pet Fare in Cannon Falls, Minn. Retailers are on the front line, and if they are familiar with the product and feeding raw at home, they can speak knowledgeably about how to thaw it in the fridge, how easy it is to portion and how their own dogsrespond. Thats what gets customers intrigued and buying.

Discussing mealtime options is another strategy for encouraging customers to try frozen raw dog food, Magnuson said. For example, suggesting frozen raw as a topper or for one meal per day could be a viable alternative for those who dont want to go all in feeding raw.

Because frozen products cannot be placed on an endcap or floor display, retailers can attract customer attention with in-store signage, said Bette Schubert, co-founder and senior vice president of sales for Bravo Pet Foodsin Manchester, Conn.

Further, an upgrade from older, freestanding freezers to glass-front units will allow customers to easily browseand quickly find the products theyare seeking.

The newer freezers not only offer increased storage capacity, but tell the customer the store is serious about its commitment to raw diets and healthful pet foods, Schubert said.

As of 2016, Woof Gang Bakery ensures that all new locations receive glass-front freezers to display raw products.

This has been an integral step to opening a dialogue about frozen raw foods with our customers, saidSamantha Cohen, vendor relationsmanager and corporate buyer for the Orlando, Fla.-based chain.

As the whole-food movement enters mealtime mainstream, consumers arerenouncing processed and refined selections in favor of organic, grass-fed and free-range alternatives, and revisiting the sustenance of past generations, said Justin Magnuson, vice president of sales and marketing for Raw Bistro Pet Fare in Cannon Falls, Minn.

Ancestral, paleo, Zoneall of these diets influence how we, as people, eat, Magnuson said. So it is only natural that we start to question the lifeless, kibble mono-diet weve been scooping into our pets dishes. Our dogs deserve 100 percent grass-fed, free-range and organic, too.

Pet owners electing for an ancestral or paleo diet for themselves are more in tune with what constitutes proper nutrition for their pets, said Kyle Frautnick, marketing director for Primal Pet Foods in Fairfield, Calif. Further, as theseconsumers continue to research their own nourishment, they often will research advantageous food options for their pets.

An ingredient panel offering whole food ingredients and no synthetics speaks to these customers, Frautnick said.

The ancestral diet movement is the cornerstone of raw diets, and with the return to a more basic diet, were going to see a surge in the popularity of raw feeding, said Bette Schubert, co-founder and senior vice president of sales for Bravo Pet Foods in Manchester, Conn.

After all, it doesnt get more natural than feeding our dogs all of the essentialsmeat, bone, organswithout all of the things they dont needgrains, fillers, low-grade meal, artificial preservatives and flavorings, she said.

Julie Paez, co-owner of The Big Bad Woof in Washington, D.C., noted anescalating call for frozen raw dog foods.

We have 13 freezer doors and are realizing its still not enough, she said. We are trying to figure out how to add more doors.

Consumers today are more aware than ever before of what they are feeding their pets, said Shelby Wisniewski, director of integrated marketing for Instinct Pet Food, a brand of Natures Variety in St. Louis. They are lookingfor minimally processed foods, and raw offers that, as well as an inherently pure ingredient listing.

It’s Time To Admit That ‘Diet’ Food Is Bogus – Huffington Post

There are no quick fixes to be found at the grocery store.

While some nutrition plans can help you achieve your weight loss or health goals, they probably dont include foods with the word diet or low-fat on the label.

For the casual follower of nutrition trends, this may sound obvious. But data on consumer habits show were still eating this stuff, according to Zhaoping Li, the director of the Center of Human Nutrition at the University of California-Los Angeles. Just take one look at the grocery aisle and youll see beloved brands like Halo Topand Arctic Zero ice cream, for example, appearing in droves.

As dreamy as their calorie or fat contents sound, theres a catch. Many of these products are still highly processed and can encourage overeating. This is hardly healthy, but the labels subtly suggest otherwise. And it pays off for retailers: Research shows that shoppers still view low-fat markers as good for you, even though they donot guarantee nutritional quality.

Low-fat does not equal healthy, Li told HuffPost. Low-fat, high-carb [diets] may not decrease your overall calorie intake nor improve your diet quality compared to high-fat foods.

Experts like Li agree for the most part that products marketed to being low-fat or diet foods arent doing anyone any favors. Here are just a few specific reasons why we should ditch them for good:

A recent study published from the University of Georgia found that diet products that are stripped of fat and include added sugar can lead to unwanted weight gain. These foods may also damage the liver, according to the studys authors.

Its important to note that this experiment was only conducted in rats, so more research needs to be done before a definitive conclusion can be made on how it affects humans. And plenty of other studies have reached similar conclusions:Swapping fat for sugar, like in that beloved fat-free ice cream or even in cereal, is only having a detrimental impact on weight.

This doesnt just apply to food: Diet beverages can also have a poor effect on health. One study even found that diet soda drinkers have larger waistlines and more likely to have type 2 diabetes and risks associated with heart diseasethan people who didnt drink diet soda at all.

Products that feature low-fat labels in flashy text arent really doing anything for your ticker, either. This is especially true for dairy: The message that you need to buy milk thats low in fat is misleading, according to Robert Bobrow, an associate professor of clinical family medicine at Stony Brook University.

As Bobrow points out, a 2013 Harvard study even found that swapping whole milk for reduced fatlacks an evidence basis for weight management or cardiovascular disease prevention. The switch could even be detrimental to health if stuff like sugar are substituted for fat.

If you happen to like the taste of defatted milk, thats one thing, Bobrow wrote in a HuffPost contributors piece. But it wont help you lose weight or render you heart-healthy.

And fat isnt exactly something to avoid. Studies show diets rich in high and healthy fats (hello, avocados!) may raise levels of the the good cholesterol in your body, which helps with artery blockage. They also may help with other risks associated with heart disease.

Food is not the enemy. You can and should enjoy it.

Studies show that the timeless advice to consume everything in moderation may not be so useful after all, but there are workarounds: Some research suggests that a technique called intuitive eating can help. Instead of abiding by what you should or shouldnt eat, this habit relies on consuming what you want based on listening to your hunger and satisfaction cues. Those who followed this method had lower body weights, according to a 2016 study.

Sadly, there are no shortcuts for optimal well-being. When it comes to weight loss, theres no better way than the old fashioned way: Healthy whole foods and exercise.

Three lane road diet back on the table for Avondale Estates’ U.S. 278 – Atlanta Journal Constitution

The states Department of Transportation has told Avondale Estates that its eligible for a road diet along U.S. 278 between Ashton Place and Sams Crossing.

This would mean cutting the current five lanes down to three (removing one east and one west bound lane) and having bike lanes in each direction. It would also mean wider sidewalks and more effective pedestrian crossings (with hawk lights), consistent with the citys goal of connecting its commercial district with residential.

GDOT had previously rejected an identical plan in December 2015, saying it would slow traffic along a critical state corridor. In March 2016 the city devised a compromise plan with four lanes, but in December asked GDOT to re-examine the three-lane scenario.

From what I understand they went back and looked at the traffic studies, said City Manager Clai Brown. I think their [agreeing to three lanes] was based entirely on that.

The tentative price for the four-lane project was $2.8 million, but the three-lane version is more intense, Brown said, and will likely cost more. Eighty percent will come from an Atlanta Regional Commission grant, and 20 percent from the city.

Brown said the project unfolds in three stages, planning and engineering, right of way acquisition and construction. Tentative finish is the middle of 2021.

Moon Eating Diet: How to Live Your Life According to Lunar Phases … – Bloomberg

For those who believe that the key to good health is a return to more primitive forms of eating, its a great time to be alive. The cultish Paleo method of diningwhich encourages ingesting mostly meats, fruits, vegetables, and good fats, only when you are hungryhas been the most-searched weight loss method on Google for the past four years. Many fast-casual restaurants have sprung up around the trend, and fancier spots have incorporated the ethos into their menus.

But theres a way to get even closer to ancient ways of eating: moon eating. A nascent trend that started in Hawaii, moon eating has yet to be co-opted by a profit-making enterprise like the South Beach Diet or Atkins. You can just start doing it on your own. If you want to, heres everything you need to know.

First of all, moon eating is not the same as the whack-a-doodle Lunar Diet (also known as the more frightfully named Werewolf Diet) that has graced the gossip rags, wherein aging celebs engage in strange fasting practices looking for their fountain of youth.

Crops planted and picked properly, according to ancient lunar calendar-based traditions, are better according to moon eating advocates.

Source: Grand Wailea

Basically, moon eating takes many of the tenets of clean living that are already trending around the world (eating organic, unprocessed foods that are locally grown or foraged, reviving ancient grains, etc) and adds a layer of timing based on the phases of the moon. The idea is, you eat certain foods at certain timesacknowledging something that the centuries-old civilizations recognized, which is that the human body and our behavior operate on roughly monthly loops like the menstrual cycle.

If you are able to grow your own food, even better. According to the chefs behind the movement, specific cycles of planting and harvesting will provide the best, most nutritious produce. The goal is to be healthier, feel better, and be able to prepare physically for regular changes in the environment around you.

Ultimatelyyou may lose weight by moon eating, but thats merely a welcome side effect; the primary goal of mindful consumption is truer connection to our planet and thus a heightened sense of well beingboth emotionally and physically. Its a lifestyle.

The modern-day moon eating craze is taking shape in Hawaii, where Michael Lofaro, chef at the iconic Grand Wailea, is trying to cast a culinary spotlight on Kaulana Mahina, the ancient Hawaiian lunar calendar.

Chef Mike Lofaro, an early proponent of moon eating.

Source: Grand Wailea

Although treated as mythology today, the Kaulana Mahina was grounded in scientific observation and was once a covenant of the land. The Hawaiians tracked the moons waxing and waning energies and perceived an incredible impact on two types of water: the big water (such as the tides bringing fish to shore) and small water (which encompasses everything from tree sap, to aquifers, to your testosterone levels). The influence of the calendar increasedto dictate practically every element of the quotidian, from fishing larger marine life (when the highest tides would roll in) to signing contracts among chieftains (during the waxing energies of lunar cycle.)

For the past two years, Chef Lofaro has been working with Kainoa Horcajo, the Grand Waileas cultural ambassador, to create special Ka Malama dinners during different phases of the moon throughout the year. The word malama is a double entendre meaning both "month" in Hawaiian and care for the world around us. A fully immersive experience, the intimate luaus celebrate the lunar cycles bounty while introducing participants to the moon eating lifestyle. And with the reopening of the hotels signature restaurant, Humuhumunukunukuapuaa, at the beginning of this year, Lofaro is now bringing the moon eating ethos to the masses with a series of ever-revolving menu items that adhere to the hunter-gather principles.

Last week, for example, while teaching a workshop on the Kaulana Mahina at the Pebble Beach Food & Wine Festival, he prepared a dish made of akule and ulu. Akule, bigeye scad, and ulu, breadfruit, are both downmarket items rarely seen on the gourmands plate. But the ulu was planted and picked on the full moon for maximum flavor and was paired with the akule, which are fished at the same time because thats when their population comes in close to the Maui coast.

The restauarant Humuhumunukunukuapua'a at the Grand Wailea.

Source: Grand Wailea

Dozens of other farms and seaside fish shacks in Maui are also pulling inspiration from the Kaulana Mahina. A look at the hundreds of images tagged #moonphaseproject on Instagram will reveal the neonatal stages of the food fad throughout the island. Here, moon eating affects not only how vendors serve fresh fare, but also how they grow it, when they procure it, and how they harvest it to ensure the highest, most robust quality possible.Fruits are once again a great entry point into purposeful planting by the local farmers, as many itemssuch asavocado, mango, and breadfruitnaturally mature throughout a lunar month. By starting and ending the cycle on the eve of the full moon, the produce is noticeably more plump and much more delicious and vitamin-rich when harvested in the correct season (breadfruit during Aprils lunar month, mango throughout the summer). Fishing practices are also much more methodical than simply dropping a linein addition to big fish moving closer inland at high tide, small mollusks and shellfish are most easily captured during the lowest tides of the lunar month. Believers in moon eating think that there's a reason why these foods become more available to human at these times, and that, essentially, we should be better about taking the earth's suggestions.

Kai Momona, prepared by Chef Mike Lofaro of Humunumunukunukuapua`a at Grand Wailea.

Source: Grand Wailea

Further extending their influence, Lofaro and Horcajo reach a wide audience of Hawaiian viewers with their local television program, Search Hawaii, which encourages viewers to plan their meals based on holistic place-based sourcing. They call this practice Mauka-Makaiessentially Land and Seaa local tradition of pairing proteins from the ocean with seasonal fruits on the land, such as limpets and mountain apple, and sea urchin and breadfruit. But they arent the only two champions of the movement. Off-island bloggerHank Shaw really drills down to the core of a similar culling methodologyadjusting your needs to your place, not trying to change the environment to suit your desires, and how to maximize the earths naturally occurring bounty.

You dont have to be in Hawaiior necessarily surrounded by natureto get in on moon eating.

Horcajo recommends starting with keeping a lunar journal (like the one from Kealopiko) to recognize the cyclical behaviors of our environment, from tracking the weather outside and the quality of our daily commute, to monitoring our moods and even the temperament of our bosses and friends.

Our survival depends on our ability to analyze patterns. Without understanding patterns, we would simply die, he said, pointing out historic needs (agricultural cycles; how to hunt prey) and their modern counterparts (data analysis; avoiding heavy traffic).

Horcajo adds that after keeping a diary for some time, youll start to notice uncanny patterns in nature, essentially being able to overlay events from past years on top of one anothera phenomenon long blurred by the arbitrary mathematics of the January-December calendar. When youre first starting out, Horcajo recommends documenting the days when its particularly hard to get out of bed (hangovers notwithstanding). He maintains that the bodys energies are weaker around the first and third moon quarters, which the Hawaiians call the ole phases, meaning "without."You can conceive of it as the moon eating version of Mercury being retrograde. Police officers and medical staff can corroborate the tangible upswing in erratic behavior as the moon becomes full. Planning around the moons impactextra sleep during ole, or leaving early for the office during full-moon traffic jamsis just as important as planning what to eat when.

Then work on your green thumb by planting as much as you can, wherever you can, be it in a garden, window box, or rooftop plot. Root cropsthink sweet potatoes, carrots, beetsshould be planted around the new moon, and above-ground producesuch aslettuce, kale, and strawberriesgo in around the full moon.According to ancient Hawaiian beliefs about small water, this is the perfect system to get the fullest, most nutrient-rich harvest.

For those without the time or interest in gardening, its best to start at a farmers market. While the "organic" branding is well and good, youre looking to create a base layer of knowledge aboutwhat grows when, and, according to Horcajo, it may sound like something out of a Portlandia episode, but you can quite literally feel the fullness of produce when its planted and harvested during the energetic parts of the lunar cycle. Just ask the farmer what day that week the fruits and vegetables were pickedonce youre in the swing of moon mindfulness, youll know what to make of the answer.

Ultimately, you might be surprised to find that moon eating works into your life more easily than any diet youve ever tried before. Whether it is the stock market or the farmers market, when you begin to pay attention, not just once in a while but all the time, you begin to spot the patterns, the ebb and flow. Its just the hubris of modern man to think that one is more important than the other. continues Horcajo. Most people involved in the various food industries around the worldmodern foragers, organic farmers, back-to-the-earth advocates are all already basing their lives around the moon calendar. They just dont know it.

Acer’s $139 fitness watch promises to monitor your stamina – Engadget

As a person with slender wrists, I dig the Ware's interchangeable 20mm band, which is slightly narrower than the 22mm option on competing devices. The blue rubber strap on the unit I tried on was comfortable and easy to put on, thanks to its standard buckle clasp. I found the device's round 1.1-inch screen dim, although an Acer spokesperson explained that the display is transreflective, meaning it's easier to see when it reflects light back to your eyes. Indeed, when I twisted my wrist to catch some light, the display became easier to read.

The watch itself is mostly responsive, although the touchscreen on my demo unit stuttered occasionally, as it struggled to respond to my swipes and taps. Still, I was intrigued by some of the Ware's unique features. It has a light bulb on each side of the case's edge, and you can turn these on with the physical buttons next to each bulb. This is handy when you need to hunt for something buried deep down in your dark purse, or looking at your ticket stub in a dimmed movie theater. But what's more intriguing is the device's SOS feature, which causes the bulbs to flash S-O-S in Morse code when you press a button in the watch's OS. It's ultimately a gimmicky tool, though, since the use cases for this are incredibly limited.

Speaking of, the biggest difference between the Ware and other fitness watches is its "stamina monitoring" feature. It sounds vague and unscientific at first, since it's strange to consider endurance as a metric that can be tracked. But an Acer spokesperson explained that it's not meant to be a data point that you can chart as you would your calorie loss or distance traveled. What the Ware can do is alert you during your workouts when you're about to run out of energy, based on its understanding of your stamina. When you're about to overexert yourself, the interface will flash red as a warning. If you're still doing well, a green light will appear.

Acer calculates your stamina through a combination of your resting heart rate, your stress level (using the onboard galvanic skin response readers) and a blood pressure-like metric. To get that last piece of data, you'll have to place your fingers on the two sensors on the Ware's edge, similar to how you would grip the heart rate sensors on a treadmill. I wasn't able to test the accuracy of this system during my brief demo, but even if I had more time with the device, I'm not sure I would be able to find a way to verify this information.

The Ware is supposed to last up to 5 days on a charge, which is longer than other smartwatches offer. In addition to tracking your activity, the device also delivers notifications from select apps on your phone, and is compatible with iOS and Android. Although I still find the stamina-monitoring claim dubious, the Ware is an ambitious watch with a low price -- a compelling combination.

LA Fitness approaching soft opening at Westfield Southgate – Sarasota Herald-Tribune

Maggie Menderski Retail Reporter @maggiemenderski

With at least eight new retailers in the works, theres been no shortage of movement at Westfield Southgate this year.

And thats even before the treadmills, cycles and aerobics classes at the new LA Fitness really get rolling.

The rows of fitness equipment have moved in and the construction crews have cleared the dust at the south end of the old Dillards property.

But its really not fair to call it that anymore.

The department store chains storefront and signature dome have been replaced with a sleek facade. Theres a three-lane swimming pool in a space that likely once held racks of clothing, and the interior has an earthy, fresh vibe to it that almost makes it feel like a spa. Its a new prototype for LA Fitness and a new look for the mall as a whole.

If youd never known it was once a Dillards, youd never be able to tell.

All thats really left in this part of the evolution is for the doors to open.

While LA Fitness couldnt give me a solid answer on when the soft opening will begin, the staff expects it will be soon.

This launch is the next step in a much bigger project. The traditional indoor shopping mall at U.S. 41 and Siesta Drive is midway through its transformation into a modern lifestyle and entertainment center. That began in 2013 with new fixtures and picked up speed in 2015 when Westfield demolished the vacant Saks Fifth Avenue and built a Cobb CineBistro on that site. Its been a 14-month gap between that opening and the new LA Fitness, but Westfield has been busy. The mall also has five restaurant spaces, a day spa and a new coffee shop under construction. Meanwhile, Benderson Development Co., which owns the old Dillards anchor, has a Luckys Market in the works adjacent to the LA Fitness.

Its a big moment for a property thats struggled since the Mall at University Town Center opened in 2014. That $315 million mall siphoned off tenants from Southgate, diluted the retail market and left the high-end shopping center in need of a whole new identity.

And it only takes a quick drive around the property to see that the mall is getting much more than a makeover.

I stopped in on Thursday morning and met with Natalie Adams, LA Fitness district operations manager for Southwest Florida, and Christa Kremer, the marketing director for Southgate and its sister property Westfield Sarasota Square.

In this increasingly difficult retail climate filled with bankruptcies and closeout sales, its unusual to see brick-and-mortar players excited, but Kremer and Adams were beaming.

Adams told me shes already seen a strong response from the community. Florida is an active place, and even though she has an LA Fitness just five miles east on Cattlemen Road, she says theres a strong demand for another one.

The new center will have child care, volleyball and basketball leagues, and may eventually offer as many as 30 classes. LA Fitness new prototype features a special space for its personal training clients and extra space for its members to gather. Its the kind of place where their clients can linger, visit and be recognized. Just like the old TV show "Cheers," she says, but its a gym, not a bar. The center will have a nutritionist on staff too, which pairs nicely with LA Fitness' organic-focus neighbor. Once Luckys Market opens this summer, the gym's members will have relatively immediate access to whatever supplements or foods the nutritionist recommends.

Its that kind of continuity thats exciting for Kremer.

The mall's newest tenants fit together, she told me. Luckys Market, LA Fitness and the upcoming LCore day spa have a wellness element to them, and theres a social aspect that comes with the restaurants and coffee shop.

The new identity that mall owners have been working on isnt just about shopping. Its about living.

National retail reports overwhelmingly show that people are increasingly spending more money on experiences than they did before the Great Recession.

If thats true here, things may be finally working out for the mall.

Or at the very least, with LA Fitness there people will be.
