People Are Outraged Over Demi Lovato Promoting a Weight-Loss Tea – Yahoo Health

Demi Lovato has made a name for herself as a body-positive activist. The singer-actress, who has been open about battling bipolar disorder and bulimia, regularly posts photos and messages to fans on social media about the importance of loving onesbody.
Photo: demilovato/Instagram
Thats why so many of her fans are upset about a recent Instagram post in which Lovato promotes a detox tea.
This year is all about#selflove, Lovato wrote in the post. Truly taking care of myself and exercising has changed everything for me. @teamiblendshas#sponsoredmy 30 day detox challenge to help get rid of toxins and my bloating for summer. Im on Day 7 right now & its so easy! I just drink their tea every single day in my favorite purple tumbler. I love taking it to shoots and the studio with me. She also offered up a promo code so that fans could save 20 percent off the product.
Reaction from fans was swift, and it wasnt positive. Many pointed out that Teami Colon, a tea made by the company, contains senna leaf, a laxative that has been cited by health officials for its potential to irritate thecolon. Teami also sells a tea called Teami Skinny that promises to help users lose weight quickly. Overall, fans expressed disappointment that someone who promotes a healthy body image would plug a product by a company that sells a weight-loss product, especially one thats unregulated.
Under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, dietary supplements including weight-loss and detox teas do not need approval from the Food and Drug Administration before theyre marketed or put on shelves. It is the companys responsibility to make sure its products are safe and that any claims made about such products are true, the FDA says on its website. Meaning, just because you can buy a product doesnt mean its safe or healthy.
Wow and you claim to be someone who [is] an advocate against eating disorders and someone who promotes body acceptance? This is disgusting, one follower wrote. Theres a SKINNY version of this tea, and for someone whos had an [eating disorder] to be promoting this is unacceptable, another said.
Eating-disorder experts agree that its not great for people who are already struggling with body image and their relationship with food to hear confusing messages from those they look up to. Trish Lieberman, RD, LDN, director of nutrition at the Renfrew Center of Philadelphia, an eating-disorders facility, tells Yahoo Beauty that people constantly hear mixed messages about food and weight in the media, and something like this just adds fuel to the fire. Celebrities have an important opportunity to positively influence how we experience body image, [and] when celebrities promote health products of any kind, they are having an influence on millions of people, she says. There is also the risk that people may assume a product is healthful when its promoted by a body-positive activist and not realize the potentially dangerous side effects.
Ashley Solomon, M.D., executive clinical director of Eating Recovery CenterinOhio, tells Yahoo Beauty that staying body positive is challenging, which is why its so important for celebrities and activists to promote a body positive message. We need examples in our culture of people whocelebrate body diversity and treat their bodies kindly, she says. When we see that those who we thought had areally healthy relationship with food and their bodies not demonstrating that ideal, it can be a hardblow [and] a lot of people will question if its even possible to live free of the pressures of our culture.

Soloman points out that even body positive activists feel societal pressure to look a certain way and, just like everyone else, they may stumble, too. Its areminder of the need to not only look to activists andcelebrities for inspiration, but to find that strength inside ourselves and to create our body-positivecommunities, she says.
Those who struggle with body acceptance, yo-yo dieting, and eating disorders are more vulnerable to messages promoted by detox teas and more likely to try them, Lieberman says. But theres a big risk in using these products. The use of detox teas can be a slippery slope leading to more extreme behaviors and negative side effects, she says. And, she points out, use of laxatives (even so-called natural ones like senna leaf) may cause dehydration, weakness, kidney damage, chronic constipation, and electrolyte imbalances affecting the heart.
New York-based registered dietitianJessica Cordingaffirms to Yahoo Beauty that detox teas are potentially dangerous, from both healthful-eating and health-safety perspectives. Theres always that risk that youre getting stuff in them thats potentially not safe, she says. Thats kind of scary. Detox teas and detoxes in general arent even necessary, she says. Your liver does a great job of processing things that you take in, Cording says. You dont need to detox your body does a great job for you.
Heather Senior Monroe, director of program development atNewport Academy, tells Yahoo Beauty that detox teas can also be harmful because they cantrigger disordered eating behaviors and body dysmorphia, especially in people who are already susceptible to them. Getting into a weight-loss mindset can lead back toward self-destructive habits, such as excessive dieting, over-exercising, anorexic tendencies, and/or bulimic patterns, she says.
Cording says shes especially upset that this promotion is coming from Lovato. Shes been really outspoken about her history with eating disorders and body challenges, and it bums me out to see her posting about a detox challenge, she says.
Lovato hasnt yet responded to the criticism.

TOPS program promotes losing weight safely, sensibly – WRAL.com

Raleigh, N.C. Many people dealing with obesity are turning to weight loss surgery. However, the original non-commercial weight loss support organization in the country, called TOPS, still preaches exercise and eating sensibly.
TOPS stands for "Taking Off Pounds Sensibly. A group of TOPS participants met in Raleigh recently to cheer each other on.
Lou Bond, 65, of Hickory is now wearing a crown and title, State TOPS Queen, for losing the most weight toward her goal.
Many people who have tried dieting are familiar with success, followed by discouraging failure.
"I tried all kinds of stuff. Went on Weight Watchers, did this, did that, Bond said."Lost a whole bunch of weight one time and gained it all back, and more."
TOPS participants join a group near where they live for support and ideas. No specific diet is preached.
"They figure that people are adults and they know what will work for them and what won't," Bond said.
Bond said drinking plenty of water and keeping a daily food diary were important for her success, losing 130 pounds. She also said thesupportof herchapter was crucial.
"The support you get from TOPS - there's no way you could do it without that," Bond said.
State TOPS King, George Smith of Fayetteville, got to the point where he couldn't bend over to tie his own shoes and he was constantly out of breath
"I had to lose 27 pounds which is insignificant to some, but still - it was hard," Smith said.
Both never expected to win this type of attention at TOPS annual state celebration.
"I think my chapter mates are more excited than I am, you know. That's kind of nice," Bond said.
A lifestyle change may not help you to lose weight as quickly, but if you find a food and exercise plan that fits your life, you are more likely to continue it for a lifetime.
Nutritionists encourage the concept of a three-day nutrition planner to get an idea of what patients are eating.
Other tips include emphasizing plant-based food in your diet and substituting sodawithwater.
Be sure to check with your doctor before starting any formal weight loss program.

Contrave diet pill: Is it safe? – Wink News

FORT MYERS, Fla. (CONSUMER REPORTS) A drug that safely melts the pounds away would be a dream come true, but our analysis shows that the prescription weight loss pill Contrave is not that miracle drug.
In three clinical trials, people who took Contrave up to 56 weeks lost only five to nine pounds more on average than those who took a placebo. And Contrave can cause serious side effects, such as liver damage, seizures, and possible heart risks. Thats why Consumer Reports medical advisers say most people should skip it: such a small amount of weight loss is not worth the risk of those possible side effects.
Contrave is actually two older drugs, combined: the antidepressant bupropion (Wellbutrin and generic), and the addiction-treatment drug, naltrexone (ReVia and generic). We took a closer look at Contrave because as part of our Consumer Reports Best Buy Drugs program, we routinely review the safety and efficacy of weight-loss drugs, and wanted to check how well Contrave measured up on both of thoseor didnt.
To do that, we worked with two drug safety expertsSteven Woloshin, M.D., and Lisa M. Schwartz, M.D., both at Dartmouth Colleges Geisel School of Medicine and the Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practiceto review the studies Contraves manufacturer, Orexigen Therapetutics, used to gain approval of the drug from the Food and Drug Administration. From there, they developed a Drug Facts Box for Contrave, which is a consumer-friendly translation of the drugs FDA-aproved drug label.
Heres what they found:
The FDA approved Contrave in late 2014 to be used along with a reduced-calorie diet and exercise, in those people who are either obese or who are overweight and have another serious condition, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes. The Contrave drug labelthe FDA-approved information about the drugdefines obese as having a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater; and being overweight as having a BMI of 27 to 29.9.
Modest Benefits One of the largest clinical trials to date of Contrave shows obese and overweight people who took the drug for up to 56 weeks lost an average of 12 pounds (or about 5 percent of their body weight), compared with an average of 3 pounds (or 1 percent of their body weight) among those who took a placebo. Both groups were also put on a reduced calorie diet, exercised, and received behavioral counseling.
To put that into perspective, we estimated that a person weighing 220 pounds who takes Contrave for a year could expect to lose about 12 pounds total: 9 pounds from the drug itself and 3 pounds from diet and exercise.
In another study, obese and overweight people who took Contrave for up to a year shed an average of 18 pounds (or 8 percent of their body weight) while the placebo group lost 11 pounds (5 percent of their body weight). Both groups were also put on a reduced calorie diet, exercised, and received behavioral counseling. The result is that Contrave contributed to losing an additional 7 pounds.
And the findings were even less impressive for people who had diabetes. Overweight people with that disorder who took Contrave for up to a year dropped an average of 9 pounds or 4 percent of their body weight, while those who took a placebo lost 4 pounds, or 2 percent of their body weight. In that case, Contrave helped people lose only 5 additional pounds.
Also, not everyone who takes Contrave will experience meaningful weight loss: In one trial, about 42 percent of people who took Contrave lost 5 percent or more of their weight compared to 17 percent of those who took a placebo.
Serious Risks The studies show that Contrave caused many people to feel sick, says Schwartz. Nearly 1 in 4 people in the clinical trials stopped taking the prescription weight loss pill because they couldnt tolerate the common side effects, including nausea, headache, and vomiting.
Contrave can also cause increased blood pressure, anxiety, and insomnia. Other side effects include constipation and dizziness.
Like other drugs that contain the antidepressant bupropion, Contrave carries a black-box warningthe strongest type issued by the FDA. Although Contrave is not intended for those under the age of 18, the warning states that the drug can, in rare instances, increase suicidal thoughts and behaviors in adolescents and young adults. It could also cause mania and depression to return in people who have previously suffered from those conditions. Other rare but serious side effects include seizures and a condition where eye pressure rises rapidly (angle-closure glaucoma).
The FDA was particularly concerned that Contrave might also raise the risk of heart problems, such as heart attack and stroke, so it required the manufacturer, Orexigen, to conduct a clinical trial to figure out if the drug is safe for the heart. But Orexigen has started and stopped two heart trials before they were finished. Now, the company says it plans to launch a third trial, but the results arent expected to be available until 2021.
In the meantime, the FDA still approved the drug without requiring the trial be completed, so Contrave remains available in the U.S. while its effect on the heart is still being investigated. In a statement to Consumer Reports, Orexigen Therapeutics, said preliminary data from its first heart risk trial provide valuable information and support our confidence in the overall safety for Contrave.
However, the FDA told us that Contraves heart risks remain unknown. Eric Pahon, a spokesman for the FDA, said it was premature to draw any conclusions from Contraves first heart trial, so determining whether Contrave poses a risk to the heart will require completing the new study.
Steven Nissen, M.D., chair of Cardiovascular Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic, who led one of the trials, agrees with the FDA. We dont have a definitive answer about the safety of this drug and we wont have one for a very long time, he says.
Bottom Line Weve previously advised against the use of weight loss medications, such as Alli or Xenical, Belviq, Qsymia, and Saxendaand now Contrave joins that listbecause they dont help most people lose much, if any, weight, and they all carry potentially serious risks. For most people, the limited benefit of Contrave isnt worth the risk of side effects or unknown heart risks, so our medical advisers recommend skipping it.
To be sure, our analysis suggests that Contrave can help people lose a meaningful amount of weight, if they are able to tolerate it and stick with an exercise and reduced-calorie diet over the course of a year. But they would also expose themselves to the serious risks of the drug. Instead, CR medical advisers say lose weight the safer wayby eating less and exercising.
If youve been unable to lose weight on your own, ask your doctor about intensive behavioral programs that have at least 12 sessions a year and include multiple strategies to help you switch to healthier diets and increase physical activity. Such programs can lead to an average weight loss of 9 to 15 pounds (or 6 percent of body weight) in the first year, according to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force.
Also good to know: If you still decide to try Contrave, and havent dropped at least 5 percent of your weight after three months of taking the drug at the target dose, you should stop taking it because its unlikely that you ever will, according to information on Contraves drug label.

Jackie Kennedy had a strict diet of boiled eggs and cottage cheese, assistant says – AOL

New details about Jackie Kennedy's life and habits after the tragic passing of her husband are coming to light in a new book Jackie's Girl: My Life With The Kennedy Family from her former assistant and live-in nanny, Kathy McKeon.
McKeon, who worked for the former First Lady for 13 years and lived with the family at their 5th Avenue apartment for 11 years, became extremely close with Jackie and gave very personal details about their relationship.
She recalled in the book that the notoriously thin-framed First Lady was just "not a big eater" and maintained her thin physique through a very strict diet. In an excerpt shared with People ahead of the release, she talked about how difficult her husband's death was on Jackie.
"She never had much of an appetite," writes McKeon, "and the toll of the horror she survived was plain to see on her painfully thin frame."
Of course, the horror that McKeon is referring to is the death of President Kennedy, which rocked their family and the entirety of the United States.
McKeon often looked to the former First Lady for advice. When she gained weight, she said that Jackie took her to the kitchen and instructed the cook to make the same meals for her that she did for McKeon. It was a strict diet of a "boiled egg and tea for breakfast, cottage cheese with fresh fruit at lunch, and a poached chicken breast or fish, with a salad or steamed vegetables for dinner (with plain yogurt to snack on when she was hungry)."

"The diet was almost exactly what Madam herself ate at home when she wasn't entertaining," explained McKeon.
But Jackie didn't stick to that diet forever. Once she met Onassis, Jackie reportedly let some things flow and enjoyed cocktail hour and late-night desserts.
"If she went into the kitchen and saw my brownies or chocolate chip cookies she would grab one and eat it right there," McKeon recalls. "Sometimes we'd crash into each other at night in the kitchen pantry. She didn't put on the light because she didn't want anyone to know she was in there!"
"She was eating ice cream out of the container with a big spoon," she says with a laugh. "Not a teaspoon but a big spoon! She was a lot of fun."

Hollywood’s Best Diet and Fitness Tips to Steal From the Pros Who Train Carrie Underwood, Karlie Kloss and More! – Us Weekly

Swimsuit season is right around the corner! In the new issue of Us Weekly, celeb nutritionists and trainers spill on how to get your best body ever by stealing some secrets from Hollywood. If youre working to have legs as amazing as Carrie Underwood's or abs as toned as Karlie Kloss', check out these diet and fitness tips straight from the pros who train them:
1. Do Some Heavy Lifting
To build her stamina for La La Land, Emma Stone did dead lifts with hefty barbells. Lifting heavier weights is effective because it increases your lean body mass, upping the number of overall calories you burn, explains Joey Gonzalez, CEO at Barrys Bootcamp, where Carrie Underwood trains. He suggests grabbing 12- to 25-pound dumbbells for squats, lunges and triceps extensions.
2. Avoid the Word Lite
Step away from any package boasting that its low-fat, advises Kerry Washingtons L.A. nutritionist Kimberly Snyder: The food has to get replacement flavor from somewhere and its often sodium and sugar. While the salt can cause bloating, adds the New York Times bestselling author, refined sugar encourages your body to hang on to excess weight.
3. Hold Yourself Accountable
Karlie Kloss NYC-based pro Anna Kaiser has her trainees wear Polar Bluetooth heart rate monitors around their chests so they can see how hard theyre actually working, explains the founder of AKT InMotion. Two people could be doing the exact same workout, but burning at completely different levels. In this case, she says, knowledge translates to accountability.
4. Balance Your Plate
Christina El Moussa makes sure each meal contains 50 percent carbs, 30 percent fat and 20 percent protein (her midday salad: kale, quinoa, avocado and veggies). That mix keeps blood sugars stable and keeps you in fat-burning mode, explains her Southern California-based nutritionist Cara Clark. And its the one research has shown is the most satisfying.
5. Vary Sweat Sessions
You dont have to ditch your favorite workout, but try to make it different each time, suggests Lauren Porat, founder of YogaSpark, where Christy Turlington sweats. If youre a runner, add in some sprint intervals, or try Porats preferred exercise. With yoga, she says, theres no shortage of interesting moves and sequences you can do in a 60-minute class.

Read More..Mediterranean diet is healthy. But is it Mediterranean? – MyAJC

There is the Mediterranean Diet. And then there is the Mediterranean Diet.
The Mediterranean Diet is said to be one of the most healthful in the world. It emphasizes fruit and vegetables while minimizing red meat. It features plenty of fish, along with poultry. It uses oil instead of butter, and herbs and spices instead of salt. It encourages exercise, along with long meals with family and friends.
The Mediterranean Diet, on the other hand, is what is eaten by people who live around the Mediterranean Sea.
There are plenty of similarities, of course the Mediterranean Diet was begun by looking at what people ate around the Mediterranean Sea. And here it should be noted that it is mainly focused on the northern and eastern parts of the Mediterranean. You wont find many foods on it from, say, Algeria (the researchers who first publicized it, Ancel and Margaret Keys, focused on foods from Greece, Crete and southern Italy).
But there are also differences.
For instance, the Mediterranean Diet specifically recommends fatty fish, such as salmon, and the use of canola oil. But salmon is a cold-water fish, native to the Northern Atlantic and Northern Pacific neither of which is particularly close to the Mediterranean Sea.
And canola oil comes primarily from Canada (the can in canola is for Canada). It is also produced in China, India and northern Europe. In other words, nowhere near the Mediterranean Sea.
Meanwhile, the Mediterranean Diet features a lot of lamb and goat meat. Youll find scant mention of either one in references to the Mediterranean Diet. And in northern Italy they use far more butter than olive oil.
So my goal in taking a healthful dip into these foods was to find that happy intersection where the Mediterranean Diet meets the Mediterranean Diet. To see where the healthy benefits of the diet are actually enjoyed by the people for whom it is named.
I began with an appetizer that couldnt be more Mediterranean if it surrounded Italy on three sides: Marinated Olives and Feta. This is a simple dish, but it creates an explosion of flavor.
Or rather, flavors. Everything that is so great about Mediterranean cooking is combined in one chunky dip: olives, feta cheese, olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, fresh rosemary and crushed red pepper. Its like going to a Mediterranean food store and buying everything on the shelves.
I marinated mine overnight to allow the flavors to blend, and served it on top of crusty bread and crackers. As the Greeks would say, Nstimo!
Next up was a dish that was, as hard as it may be to believe, even easier to make. Date Wraps are like a slightly healthier and more elegant version of perhaps the best hors doeuvre in the world, dates wrapped in bacon.
This time, the dates are wrapped in prosciutto. The rich flavor of the cured meat plays beautifully off the sweetness of the dates, and the saltiness means you can dispense with the Parmesan cheese that is an important part of the bacon version.
A twist of black pepper on top provides just the right amount of spice to make it interesting. As the Italians would say, Delizioso!
For a side dish, I turned to perhaps my favorite vegetable, asparagus. In Andalusia the southern area of Spain that borders the Mediterranean Sea they cook it in an astonishingly good way.
First, they saut the asparagus spears in olive oil, which is a truly auspicious way to start anything. But then they go a step further by baking the asparagus with a topping made from blanched almonds, garlic and bread crumbs that are sautd in olive oil auspiciously and then all ground together.
Its not the garlic that goes so magnificently with the asparagus, or the almonds or even the bread crumbs. It is the combination of all three. As the Spanish would say, Excelente!
And for a main course, I made fish, of course. Both versions of the Mediterranean Diet involve eating a lot of fish.
I used one of the most popular fish in the region, swordfish, and topped it with an abundance of Mediterranean ingredients: olives, capers, tomatoes and olive oil.
How did it taste? Lets just say the French would call it superbe.

ANDALUCIAN ASPARAGUS
Yield: 4 to 6 servings
2 pounds young asparagus
4 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided
4 garlic cloves, peeled
12 almonds, blanched, see note
1 (2-inch) slice crusty country-style bread, crusts removed, cut into cubes
1 tablespoon very good quality sherry vinegar
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
Note: To blanch almonds, bring a small pot of water to a boil. Remove from heat and immediately add raw almonds. Let almonds sit in hot water for 45 seconds to 1 minute, but no longer. Drain immediately and briefly run under cold water to stop cooking. Remove peels; they should easily slide off with a pinch.
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Remove and discard the bottom few inches from each spear of asparagus, rinse the remainder and set aside.
2. Heat 2 tablespoons of the oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the garlic, almonds and bread, and saut, stirring constantly, until all the ingredients are nicely browned, about 5 to 7 minutes. Do not allow them to burn. Transfer the almonds, garlic and bread cubes (use a slotted spoon if oil remains in the pan) to a food processor or blender. Add the vinegar and salt and process briefly until the mixture is a coarse meal.
3. Add remaining 2 tablespoons oil to the pan, if necessary, and saut the asparagus over medium-low heat until the stalks change color and start to become tender, about 5 to 7 minutes.
4. Remove the asparagus and place in an ovenproof gratin dish. Bring a cup of water to a boil and pour it over the asparagus. Then sprinkle the almond-bread mixture over the top. Bake for 15 minutes or until the asparagus is thoroughly cooked and most of the liquid has boiled away. Serve immediately.

BAKED FISH WITH CAPERS AND OLIVES
Yield: 6 to 8 servings
4 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided
2 pounds boneless fish, especially swordfish, sea bass, haddock, cod, snapper, grouper fillets, halibut steaks or salmon
1 cup very ripe tomatoes, peeled and seeded, or 1 cup drained imported canned tomatoes
1/2 teaspoon granulated sugar
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon drained capers, rinsed
1/4 cup chopped pitted green olives, preferably large Italian olives
Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/2 cup unseasoned dry bread crumbs
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Use a teaspoon of oil to coat the inside of a baking dish large enough to hold all the fish in one layer. Place the fish in it.
2. Chop the tomatoes and mix with the sugar and lemon juice in a small bowl. Add the capers and olives and mix again. Taste for seasoning and add salt and pepper as desired. Pile the tomato sauce on top of the fish pieces. Distribute the bread crumbs over the top and drizzle on the remaining 3 teaspoons (1 tablespoon) oil. Bake 35 to 40 minutes or until the fish is thoroughly cooked and the sauce is very bubbly and browned.
Per serving (based on 6): 199 calories; 5 g fat; 1 g saturated fat; 63 mg cholesterol; 28 g protein; 9 g carbohydrate; 2 g sugar; 1 g fiber; 309 mg sodium; 39 mg calcium

Is It Time to Buy Planet Fitness? – Motley Fool

Planet Fitness (NYSE:PLNT) has been quickly growing. Not only have new locations been cutting ribbon, but typical New Year's resolutions aimed at exercising and getting in shape have propelled total memberships higher as well.
Still, the company's stock has declined 15% in the last few months and is down 25% from its peak last fall. Here's a look into what's going on -- and whether it's time to buy the stock or not.
Data by YCharts.
In 2016, Planet Fitness' total revenue increased 14% to $378 million. That was achieved through 195 new openings, a 17% location count increase, and 8.8% growth in same-store sales. At year-end, the gym was knocking on the door of 9 million in total memberships and it recently reported that it surpassed the 10 million members mark.
The company's claim to fame is its low-membership cost (starting at $10 a month) and non-intimidating environment. Lifters who get a little too into their workout are threatened to tone it down with the prominently featured "lunk alarm," which sounds off if you start disturbing or intimidating other guests. The company also talks up a no-bullying and judgement-free atmosphere.

The message is paying off with the target audience. The company reports 43% of new signups came from people who said they have never had a gym membership before. Reasons given for not joining until now? Survey says expensive fees and an intimidating environment kept them away.
That incremental growth at existing locations especially helped the bottom line during the year. Net income per share rose to $0.50, a better than 350% increase over 2015. And if that wasn't good enough, Planet Fitness showed off further when it paid out a $2.78 special dividend to shareholders in December.
The system in place for growth is working, so Planet Fitness plans to keep rolling with it. Most locations operate under a franchise agreement, where a franchisee takes care of basic operations. Under Planet Fitness' new franchise model, the company gets a 5% cut of revenue generated in addition to equipment sales and fees for setting up the equipment.
The franchise model was the biggest driver of revenue last year, so the 2017 plan is for 190 to 200 more locations. Paired with an expected 6% to 8% rise in comparable sales, Planet Fitness sees sales rising this year to between $405 and $415 million. That would be a 7% increase at the low end of guidance.
Supporting those new store openings is the current retail climate. The internet has disrupted brick-and-mortar stores, causing many to close, leaving quite a few vacancies on the market. The "one person's pain is another's gain" mantra is holding true, though. Without revenue coming in, strip mall owners are ready to make a deal, and Planet Fitness reports being able to negotiate very favorable terms as it expands.
Planet Fitness' low-pressure and supportive gym atmosphere have helped foster a very different kind of attitude from Wall Street, though. As revenues and profits improved throughout the last year, performance expectations have gone up as well. One-year trailing earnings and forward price-to-earnings currently sit at 38 and 21, respectively, already pricing in a fair amount of future growth.
Expectations may be high, but the company looks well-positioned to deliver results. My favorite measure in judging a company's investment worthiness is free cash flow, or money left over after basic expenses are paid for. Extra cash on hand continues to rise, and with the recent pullback in the stock, the share price to free cash flow ratio is at a low point.
Data by YCharts.
The hype pushing new gym-goers to their local Planet Fitness hasn't translated over to stock performance as of late, but that could soon change. With more locations opening this year and a track record of filling them up, this stock is worth a look.
