The New America – Investor’s Business Daily

By focusing more on men, Nutrisystem is able to get a leg up on rivals. (NutriSystem)

Bikini-bod season is nigh upon us.

It's a goodthing for Nutrisystem (NTRI) that the weight-loss plan provider is expected to reporta pretty killer "diet season."

When the company reports first-quarter results Wednesday after the close, analysts are expecting profit to almost double, with revenue jumping 25%.

Craig-Hallum analyst Alex Fuhrman said in a note to clientslast week that "all signs point to another beat and raise" for Nutrisystem, citing "strong" Google searches, ramped-up advertising and developments with the South Beach Diet brand.

"We believe the core Nutrisystem brand has resonated well with consumers in 2017, and a focus on men (is) likelyyielding stronger performance than other diet space peers," he wrote in his Thursday report. "Combined with the continued advertising of the South Beach Diet brand, which is indicative of strong consumer interest, we believe Nutrisystem will continue to gain marketshare in 2017."

When it comes to losing weight, the tsunami of options can be overwhelming.Googling "diet plan" yields 33 million search hits. Searching for "best way to lose weight" brings up more than twice as many results.

Diet delivery plans now also contend, to a degree, with home-delivery meal-kit options like Blue Apron, Hello Fresh and others though many of those cater to amateur gourmands, not necessarily health-conscious diners. Some, like Pete's Paleo, Sakara and Purple Carrot, appear to cater to both.

The company's five-day weight-loss kits and packaged products such as its NutriCrush bars and shakes and Thick Crust Pizza are available at Wal-Mart (WMT).

Now it has another well-known brand in its portfolio. After acquiring the South Beach Diet brand in December 2015, Nutrisystem reintroducedit at the start of this year as a diet-plan system that includes meal deliveries. The company expects South Beach to add $20 million to $25 million to revenue in fiscal 2017, with "meaningful growth" expected the following year.

Investors felt goodabout the last batch of earnings and sales figures in February. Shares of Nutrisystem took off like a rocket after handily beating the Street's fourth-quarterforecasts. Breaking clear of a period of consolidation in heavy volume, the stock popped 18.6% to 46.50 on Feb. 28 and hasn't looked back.

That action led analyst Matthew Gall of Barrington Research to downgrade the stock to market perform from outperform "solely based on valuation."

"Guidance for the Q1 diet season and (fiscal 2017) was particularly strong and ahead ofconsensus expectations, which we believe is now reflected in NTRI's current share price," he wrote on March 24, adding that trading at a premium to its diet peers "reflects consistently strongexecution by management and higher growth rates."

IBD'S TAKE: Nutrisystem's jump after its last earnings report sent shares soaring, but also extended the stock. Still, shares keep climbing and are up nearly 20% from the Feb. 28 rally. The stock is ranked No. 1 in IBD's Cosmetics and Personal Care Group.

Shares now are in the mid-50s, finishing Friday's session down 1.5% to 55.50.

For the first quarter, Nutrisystem is expected to post revenue of $202.9 million for the quarter that includes the key January-February "diet season" months that come courtesy of New Year's resolutions and follow the winter holidays. Earnings are seen catapulting 89% to 17 cents a share from 9 cents in the prior-year period.

Unlike, say, Oprah Winfrey-endorsed Weight Watchers International (WTW), Nutrisystem has a greater focus on building its men's business, with commercials targeted specifically to that demographic. That is seen as helping the company get a greater slice of the presumably low-calorie diet-plan pie.

And compared withpeers such as Hydroxycut, Jenny Craig, Medifast and Weight Watchers, which have toned down their ad spending in April from the prior year, Nutrisystem has accelerated its spending on national TV commercials, which Craig-Hallum's Fuhrman sees as an indicator that the spring ads are performing well with customers.

Fuhrman told Investor's Business Daily that men account for 25%-30% of Nutrisystem's customer base, about double that of Weight Watchers' clientele.

Diets are tricky things, though.A 2015 John Hopkins analysis of 32 commercial weight-loss programs found that "few" are backed by rigorous scientific data; it found thatonly Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig were backed by clinical trials of a year or longer.

Nutrisystem offered "promising weight-loss results," said researchers, but more data were needed to evaluate long-term effectiveness of the plan.

It fared well enough with health experts at U.S. News & World Report. The publication ranks Nutrisystem in fifth place in its Best Commercial Diet Plans category and No. 16 in Best Diets Overall.

6 Easy Brain Tricks to Help You Lose Weight – Parade

Health April 24, 2017 12:04 AM ByNicole Pajer Parade @@NicolePajer More by Nicole

Frustrated with your weight loss progress (or lack thereof)? Your brain may be to blame. Shedding pounds and keeping them off has less to do with the food you eat and more to do with whats going on in your mind, says Eliza Kingsford, author of Brain-Powered Weight Loss. It starts with learning who you are in relation to your actions, says the psychotherapist who specializes in weight management. What are your triggers? How do you manage cravings? How do you handle situations after youve gone off track? What are the messages that you tell yourself?

Dr. Susan Peirce Thompson, adjunct associate professor of brain and cognitive sciences at the University of Rochester, agrees. Getting your brain on board is an essential requirement for long-term weight loss, she says. This is the piece that people are missing.

Heres how to make your brain your ally instead of a diet-sabotaging enemy:

Curb negative thoughts. Cognitive distortions, or thoughts that create inaccurate or exaggerated pictures of reality, can wreak havoc on weight loss goals by affecting your feelings, which trigger behaviors. Lets say you go to a party and see a beautiful girl and think, Ill never look as good as her, Kingsford says. Then you go home and eat a pizza at 2 a.m. because now you feel bad about yourselfwhen you left the house feeling good.

To break the cycle, follow Kingsfords Three Rs: Recognize a negative thought, replace it with something positive and repeat it. So instead of shaming yourself, say, Shes beautiful and so am I.

1. Think of your future self. Battling a big craving? Close your eyes and imagine yourself in the future, reaping the rewards of resisting turning heads at your high school reunion or crossing the finish line of a challenging race. In his new book, The Hungry Brain, author Stephan J. Guyenet says that taking time for this kind of visualization helps your rational brains decision making process, which can override in-the-moment impulses.

2. Keep trigger foods out of sight. A Cornell study found that women ate half as many Hersheys Kisses when they were in opaque containers on their desks vs. clear containers. This is because the visual cues were not present, says Dr.Adrienne Youdim, director of the Center for Weight Loss and Nutrition in Beverly Hills, California. You can make this work in your favor, too, by keeping healthy foods most visible in your kitchen.

3. Put meals in writing. The average person makes 221 food-related choices every day, says Peirce Thompson. There is no way that our willpower can execute in the face of that kind of uncertainty. Try to remove choice as much as possible by planning meals and recording them ahead of time in a food tracker. The next day, your only food job is to eat what youve planned out, Peirce Thompson says. If a whole day is daunting, start by pre-tracking the meal that gives you the most trouble, like dinner, and build on that.

4. Say an affirmation. It sounds corny, but it works: A study published in Psychological Science found that women dissatisfied with their size lost more weight after affirming their values. Kingsford suggests choosing a phrase that is positive, personal, pointed and in the present tense. For instance: I have the power to change my lifestyle. Repeat it three times every morning.

5. Smell before you bite.More than 90 percent of taste is smell, says Dr. Alan Hirsch, founder of Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago. The neurologist conducted a six month study where volunteers were given aromatic blends of scents like banana and green apple and instructed to smell them whenever they felt hungry. Those who sniffed more often lost the most weight. By sniffing your food, odor molecules reach the olfactory nerve at the top of the nose, and you will therefore perceive that youve eaten more than you have, Hirsch says. Take note: Eating your food hot helps enhance the smell, while drinking alcohol with your meal has the opposite effect.

6. Expect to make mistakes. Temptations will strike along the way, says Kingsford. But if you stray from your goals, its important to get your brain back in the game as soon as possible. Resist the impulse to keep indulging. Saying Ill start again Monday can quickly become next week, she says. Dieting is not all or nothing. Make sure you get back on track with your very next choice.

Diet Doc Releases Top Weight Loss Program to Reduce Blood Sugar and Lose Weight Fast With Ketogenic Diet – Marketwired (press release)

ANCHORAGE, AK--(Marketwired - April 24, 2017) - The U.S. market is saturated with fad diets, weight loss supplements, and "easy fixes" that promise to deliver rapid weight loss with no consequences. In reality, weight loss is far more challenging and obesity is a vast, continuously increasing problem. More than 30% of all Americans are overweight or obese individuals, regularly dealing with issues like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and certain types of cancer. With obesity comes higher body mass index (BMI) levels and increased health problems. For this reason, reducing excess body fat and pursuing healthier lifestyles is vital. A long-term weight loss solution, ideally monitored by a doctor and customized to the dieter's nutritional needs, is important for consistent weight loss progress. A regular fitness routine and a balanced diet with calorie monitoring are also important.

According to Dr. Nishant Rao, the resident medical expert at Diet Doc, a nationally recognized top weight loss program, regulating blood sugar is also crucial to the weight loss and weight maintenance process. When regulated, blood sugar levels have virtually no negative impact on weight loss. However, when blood sugar levels elevate too much, the body's ability to process glucose is obstructed. As a result, the body stores the extra glucose as fat, which can ultimately lead to worse issues like diabetes, heart disease, or even obesity.

According to Dr. Rao, "Diet Doc uses low carb dietary principles along with the Ketogenic diet to facilitate sizable drops in blood sugar, which can allow for fat loss to occur more effectively." In severe cases, variations of intermittent fasting, or IF, may also be employed in order to "create extended fasting windows which further reduce blood sugar, allowing for fat to get used without storing sugar." At Diet Doc, a top weight loss program is offered for all patients. The unique dietary needs of each individual are considered in order to maximize efficiency, safety and maximal results. For this reason, all patients receive custom-designed weight loss programs and diet consulting. With a safe, doctor-supervised diet plan and guidance for life, Diet Doc patients gain the following benefits within the very first month:

For patients who struggle with portion control or emotional eating, Diet Doc offers solutions like Metwell, which helps balance metabolism and reduce appetite without harmful side effects. Medical weight loss solutions like these, especially in combination with popular diets like the Ketogenic Diet, have been shown to be effective when doctor-supervised and customized to an individual's dietary needs, according to Dr. Rao.

With a team of doctors, nurses, nutritionists and motivational coaches, Diet Doc products help individuals lose weight fast and keep it off. Patients can get started immediately, with materials shipped directly to their home or office. They can also maintain weight loss in the long-term through weekly consultations, customized diet plans, motivational coaches and a powerful prescription program. With Diet Doc, the doctor is only a short phone call away and a fully dedicated team of qualified professionals is available 6 days per week to answer questions, address concerns and support patients.

Getting started with Diet Doc is very simple and affordable. New patients can easily visit https://www.dietdoc.com to quickly complete a health questionnaire and schedule an immediate, free online consultation.

About the Company:

The Genuine Freshman: Take it One Turn at a Time – Daily Trojan Online

Photo from Pixabay

Every year, my family and I go to Colorado to ski. Over spring break, we made our annual trip to Vail. Generally speaking, I ski blues confidently and vehemently avoid moguls and black diamond hills. However, over break, I was faced with the feat of skiing a black diamond. This was a complete accident as I got lost trying to ski down the mountain, and I had no other choice but to go down it. Looking down at it, I was terrified and contemplated taking off my skis and just walking down the hill. I knew this would not be a realistic endeavor because the slopes were just about to close, and there was so much traffic going down the hill. I took a deep breath and started my journey down this intimidating path. Despite how scared I was, I reminded myself to make wide turns and not to look down at the hill. Slowly but surely, curve by curve, turn by turn, I made it to the bottom safely without falling or getting an injury. I smiled, proud that I accomplished something I never imagined I would achieve.

In this stressful time as the semester wraps up, I remind myself of this moment during spring break. I was extremely overwhelmed by the sight of that black diamond hill and knew that if I skied straight down it, I would lose control and seriously injure myself. Like that hill, if you attack all of your academic and extracurricular responsibilities at once, you are going to paralyze yourself and will not effectively complete everything. We must remember to divide all of our work into manageable chunks and triage everything based on priority. Making careful turns on a black diamond hill is a perfect metaphor for this: take everything piece by piece. As college students, we are inevitably going to be faced with difficult tasks as required by our classes and activities, but our success in them depends on how we approach these hurdles. If we pile them on ourselves like a giant weight, we are the only ones impeding our success. I cannot emphasize enough how important the first step to manage life as a busy college student is to take a deep breath. We have to remember that academic stresses are like a steep, black diamond hill that must be approached with care and assiduity. Finals are approaching, and to my fellow students reading this, freshmen and seniors alike, I urge you to view them in the same way that I viewed that hill after I skied down it, unscathed. My overarching point is that some things in life can be extremely hard to deal with, but conquering them comes from effectively managing them.

Knowing Your Genetics Could Help Design Just The Right Diet – Vocativ

Most diets fail. Whether the goal is losing weight or just generally eating healthier, a commonly cited (and probably overstated) statistic says 95 percent of diets dont work. But new research suggests the secret of a better diet could be hiding in our DNA.

Our eating habits are complex, and are shaped by environmental, cultural, and psychological factors as much as by genetics. But a better understanding of the latter could help people design diets that are optimized to their most fundamental food preferences, according to researcher Silvia Berciano of the Autonomous University of Madrid. Presenting her research teams work Saturday at the Experimental Biology 2017 conference in Chicago, Bercianorelated how a study of 818 men and women revealed links between genetic variation and dietary choices.

For instance, how the brain expressed a particular gene associated with obesity was linked to how much vegetable and fiber intake a person got. Another gene connected to the hormone oxytocin played a role in a persons fondness for chocolate. Still other genes shaped how much salt and how much fat a person tended to have in their diet. There were a few other links the researchers found, but there was less evidence these connections were significant.

In theory, this sort of research could help build better, more personalized diets. Somebody who, for instance, has a genetic predisposition toward chocolate but not toward salt would do better to cut down on the latter and be more likely to not quit on such a diet. Understanding how specificgenes affect food preferences could also tell us more about the genetic risks behind diseases that are in part shaped by peoples diets, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Those who participated in the study sites in Minneapolis and Salt Lake City were all of European ancestry, so an important next step will be to see whether these results hold for people of different ethnicities. Previous studies found genetic components to eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia, but this is the first time researchers have studied how genes might shape eating habits more generally.

Its early days yet for gene-based dieting, but even these preliminary results are intriguing for everyone hoping for a better diet to come along.

The shocking facts and fictions behind the latest fad diets – NEWS.com.au

Ever wondered how to live a long and healthy life? Here are some tips we can learn from our brothers and sisters overseas!

Fad diets are putting young people at risk, experts warn.

YOUNG people could be putting their health at risk by following dieting fads such as going dairy free, experts have warned.

A survey by the National Osteoporosis Society found a fifth of under 25-year-olds are cutting out or reducing dairy in their diet, which can be dangerous if they do not get enough calcium from other sources, reports The Sun.

The charity said that many young people take their dietary advice from bloggers and while some of it is sound, it is not always based on science and may not be right for everyone.

Here, Sun nutritionist Amanda Ursell sorts fact from fiction and answers eight of the most common questions about our diets.

Does grapefruit help with weight loss?

The grapefruit diet was created in the 1920s and has been praised by celebrities like Kylie Minogue.

But scientists at Oxford University found no difference in weight between groups taking grapefruit or a placebo.

Is chocolate a health food?Source:Supplied

Is chocolate a health food?

Chocolate is low on the glycaemic index, which measures how quickly carbohydrates are digested and how quickly they raise the level of blood sugar.

Chocolate squeaks into the low-GI bracket because digestion of the 24g of sugar in a 50g bar is slowed down by the 15g of fat it also provides.

But it will never be the same as a bowl of strawberries, so keep it as a treat.

Which kind of milk has the most calcium?

Full-fat, 2 per cent and skim milk all contain roughly the same amount of calcium, as the bone-building mineral is found in the watery part of milk, not the fatty part.

So when fat is removed for 2 per cent and skim milk, none of this vital mineral is lost.

Does eating celery use more calories than it holds?

There is little scientific evidence either way for this claim. But given that a stick of celery provides just two calories, the numbers really arent worth worrying about.

If you enjoy it, eat it. If you dont, choose another vegetable you like.

Are all processed foods bad for you?

Not always. Wholemeal bread and pasta, natural yoghurt, oats, and frozen vegetables all undergo processing and these foods are not considered bad for us.

In fact, some processed foods, such as red kidney beans, are better for you than before they are treated.

On the other hand, overly refined processed foods, such as cakes, pies, and cookies, should be limited.

Are fad diets doing you more harm than good?Source:Supplied

Could my diet be giving me pimples?

Good news there is no strong conclusive evidence that chocolate or dairy products cause acne. Dark chocolate provides antioxidants that may actually help to protect the skin.

For healthy skin, you should drink plenty of water and eat a balanced diet.

Foods with vitamins A, C and E, zinc, riboflavin, niacin, pyridoxine and selenium will also help.

What is the best source of calcium?

Dried fruits, beans, and seeds do contain calcium.

But they also have substances known as oxalates and phytates that grab on to the calcium they contain and reduce how much you can absorb.

The British Dietetic Association advises that they should not be used as your main source of calcium.

Milk, yoghurt, almond milk and fortified oat, rice and soy milk are much better sources.

How much oily fish should I eat?

We should have at least two portions of fish a week, including one serving (about 5 oz) of oily types such as salmon and mackerel. Oily fish is full of omega-3 essential fats, which are good for our hearts and the nervous systems of babies and children.

But some oily fish contain low levels of pollutants that build up, so pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised to stick to a maximum of two servings per week.

Eyes on the Street: A Road Diet of Sorts on Chestnut by the Hancock Tower – Streetsblog Chicago (blog)

A new striped median has transformed a de-facto three-lane street into a two-lane, which is hopefully calming traffic somewhat. Photo: Anna Weaver

Streetsblog reader Anna Weaver alerted me to an interesting new pavement marking treatment on Chestnut Street between the Hancock Tower and Water Tower Place. While the block previously had no lane markings, making it a de-facto three-lane westbound street, the city recently striped a median that serves as a bit of a road diet, transforming it to a two-lane thoroughfare. Hopefully, this is calming traffic somewhat.

Thats not to say that the block is currently a pedestrian paradise. Theres a busy mid-block crosswalk between the two tourist attractions. Judging from numerous photos Anna sent, people on foot still have to navigate a snarl of traffic, and drivers arent always obeying the state law by yielding to people in the crosswalk.

There are a couple of yellow diamond Pedestrians Ahead signs at the next intersection east, at Mies Van Der Rohe Way. But, as Anna pointed out, the caution sign on the south side of Chestnut is obscured by a light pole and One-Way sign. The two signs are also located half a block away from the mid-block crossing, perhaps too far away to give a timely warning.

What the mid-block crossing is really crying out for is a State Law: Stop for Pedestrians Within Crosswalk sign. As you can see from this August 2016 Google Street View, it used to have one installed in the middle of the street, right before the crosswalk.

However, Anna says multiple Stop for Pedestrians were installed at this location, destroyed by drivers, and then obliterated again. She says it seemed to be the only such sign in the 42nd Ward. Since the sign hasnt been reinstalled along with the new striping, perhaps the city has given up on in-stalling in-road signs at this location. A good alternative might be to install signs on poles on the sidewalk, where theyd be relatively safe from getting run over.

Greenwich trainer competes for top fitness titles

It was just a few years ago when Stamford native and the recently named Fittest Man in Connecticut Mike Palomba tried CrossFit for the first time.

I got obliterated, said the former three-time all-conference player in baseball and football. I was immediately hooked. I wanted to go back the next day and beat everybody.

And that is pretty much what he did, Palomba said.

In the coming months, 21-year-old Palomba, who weighs 195 pounds, will use that same attitude to take on other CrossFitters in pursuit of the title Fittest Man on Earth. On CrossFits online leaderboard of individual men, the 5-foot-9-inch trainer, who is employed by CrossFit Exceed in Glenville, was ranked 20th out of more than 200,000 in the world as of Friday.

Millions of people across the world subscribe to the CrossFit workout at roughly 13,000 affiliated gyms, based on 2016 numbers. Connecticut boasts about 100 of those gyms, according to CrossFits website. Greenwich hosts two franchises within a five-minute drive.

CrossFit workouts vary, but primarily consist of intense strength and conditioning components that combine everything so youre using every single muscle and throwing all the movements together, said Palomba.

The high-intensity, ultra-competitive sport has faced its share of criticism, but that hasnt stunted its popularity, which is on display at each year at the annual Reebok CrossFit Games, at which Palomba hopes to compete. The Games, as CrossFitters often refer to it, will mark its 10th birthday in Wisconsin this summer. Athletes will vie for titles of Fittest on Earth.

Before contestants make it to the weeklong event that draws thousands of spectators, they have to qualify in regionals. Palomba, who was this month named The Fittest Man in Connecticut at another CrossFit competition, anticipates the upcoming Northeast regional in May. In Albany, N.Y., he will face off against the reigning champion of the CrossFit Games, Mathew Fraser, the son of Olympic figure skaters. Fraser took second at The Games in 2014 and 2015.

These days, Palomba splits his time between classes at Norwalk Community College, work and training two-a-days five days per week. I still have a test at 7 I have to get done today, too, Palomba said last week between workouts.

Surrounded by wall-length banners bearing messages such as: How bad do you want it, and Success isnt given, its earned, Palomba has overcome years of sports injuries to prepare himself for the series of workouts that could lead to his claiming a champion title.

Just last fall, Palomba tore his meniscus, but that barely stopped the athlete, who has broken every finger at least once and recovered from tendinitis and a gunshot wound. For legal reasons, Palomba wouldnt discuss the circumstances, but he said he was hit by a stray bullet in a public shooting. As with most of his injuries, regardless of severity, it only kept him out of the gym for a few weeks.

As Palomba describes his training plan for the The Games, its clear why nothing can keep him down he cant remain still for more than a few minutes at a time. Activity appears to be his only state as he alternates between stretching and small exercises while chatting about his motivation.

I hate to lose more than I like to win, Palomba said.

In the weeks leading up to Palombas big events, the entire CrossFit Exceed community is rallying around him, according to Maggie Felli, who has trained there since the gym opened. Everyone is amped and excited for him, she said.

Since my first class with Mike, Ive always tried to go to his classes, she said. Hes always upbeat and happy, and theres a passion with him. You can tell he believes in it.

It was for those reasons the gyms owner and Greenwich native Todd Vitale hired him, Vitale said.

I hired Mike day one when we opened, he said. He is one of the best of the best who does what he does, and he passes off his knowledge to my members. Plus, hes a low-key, good guy and not one of those testosterone gorillas.

CrossFit can be intimidating for those new to it, Vitale admitted, but Palomba reads his clients really well and makes sure people dont feel left out, he said.

When Palomba talks about his own competitiveness, his voice becomes grave. Its evident that the drive to be the best is the biggest motivator he could have, though the winnings of The CrossFit Games are nothing to dismiss. Last years individual winners for both men and women raked in $275,000 each.

If he doesnt win The Games in August, I would just feel like I want to do it all again, Palomba said. And if he wins, would he feel the need to defend his title?

I hate to say it, but yeah, Palomba responded.

Fitness Center at Portville Central targets health for the whole community – Olean Times Herald

PORTVILLE More than 1,000 people have passed through Portville Central Schools new fitness center since it opened in January.

The pace has slowed a bit now that the outdoors beckon, but it is not unusual to see 65 or 70 students working out right after classes are over for the day, according to District Superintendent Thomas Simon as he welcomed visitors to Thursday nights Fitness Center Open House. On slow days and in the spring and fall there could be 30 or 40 kids after school or athletic practice, and a before school early morning group numbering more than 20.

But school officials concerned with community health are hoping to draw adults with the schools amenities. Since the fitness facility opened in January, adults have thronged to the new facility that was part of the 2014 capital improvement project approved in a 2-1 vote that year. Snags in the State Education Departments review process delayed completion, but the communitys fondness for fitness only grew.

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 5 to 7:30 p.m., adults have the exclusive use of the facility. A mix of adults and students in grades 7-12 can work out from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, a slot that provides a family time opportunity, officials said.

Any time of day or year, Portville Centrals Fitness Center like the ropes course, the outdoor classroom and the handicap accessible kayak launch is something that district residents, students and employees want. And its something of which the schools administrators are proud.

Thursdays event, purposely scheduled on a slow day in April, attracted a steady trickle of visitors and regulars from the community.

Annette Hill, a mother of two PCS students, said she works out during her sons track meet.

Brian Gariepy, a village resident, said he comes to the center for his health, working out three evenings a week on the stationary bikes and cardio machines, and then running on the outdoor track.

I need the track, Gariepy said. At 42, he added, he doesnt feel safe anymore running or riding his bike on the public roads while training for a triathlon.

Gina Zeigler, a PCS teacher and mother of three, said having the fitness center in the school is especially helpful for teachers.

Teachers can work off the stress, she said.

Many of the fitness enthusiasts using the center during the open house commented on the convenience of a local facility and agreed it is nicer than just about anything else in the area.

Carla Campbell, a community resident hired in January to run adult fitness classes and assist at the center Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, received CPR and nautilus training.

She said she thinks the community is getting healthier.

Matt Gnan, the schools athletic trainer for the past four years, was on hand to talk about his role in the curriculum and to show off the well-stocked therapeutic area he designed for the athletic facility.

My goal was to bring college-level sports medicine to the high school, Gnan said, noting this seems to lower the number of severe injuries in young athletes.

He and Simon say cleanliness and sanitation are key elements of the new athletic environment, and it includes providing in-house towels and laundry.
