Diet, Exercise and ‘Giraffe Hugs’: Up Close and Personal with April and Her Baby – Live Science

The baby received a clean bill of health during his first checkup, and is getting plenty of attention from mama April.
April, the internet-famous giraffe, finally delivered her long-expected calf on April 15 at Animal Adventure Park (AAP) in Harpursville, New York. The as-yet-unnamed baby, a male, weighed 129 pounds (58.5 kilograms) at birth and stood 5 feet 9 inches (nearly 2 meters) tall.
Today (April 17), Jordan Patch, AAP's owner, updated Live Science on how the AAP veterinarian and April's caregivers are monitoring the nursing mother and her newborn, and described how the new arrival is adapting to life in the spotlight.
This Q&A has been lightly edited for length and clarity.
Live Science: How quickly does a baby giraffe grow, and what are the big milestones?
Patch: Now that we're really passed the hard part, which is the animal getting on its feet and making sure it nursed from the mother, we're watching weight gain. We're looking for the calf to gain about 1 to 3 percent of its body weight per week. Just overnight, he experienced about a pound to a pound-and-a-half of weight gain, which is a great progression. [Watch Live: April and Her Newborn Calf Get Acquainted]
The next big thing will be when calf and mom enter the yard with one another and the calf experiences the outdoors frolics and plays and learns to keep its balance in a bigger space when it's running around. The calf should be able to go outside by the weekend [April 2223]. Then from there, we watch the calf grow. At about three months of age, we'll see it begin to investigate hay, nibbling on it. But by no means is it sustained yet by that kind of a food source, it will still rely on mom.
Live Science: Is April's diet different now that she's a nursing mother?
Patch: The diet changed for her when she was about six months pregnant. We upped her normal diet, which is Wild Herbivore Pellet, to Wild Herbivore Pellet Plus. Those diets are made by a company called Mazuri Diets, and they develop specialized diets for animals in captive management programs everything fromgiraffesandrhinosto flamingos and bears. Her caloric intake is still increased, along with additional calcium and other vitamins and minerals to ensure that she can produce milk and continue that mammary development.
Live Science: Is the calf nervous around people, and how does April respond to being separated from her newborn?
Patch: The baby is actually quite adventurous for such a young calf, that's something we've all noticed and documented. He's out and exploring. And the few visitors we've had in the barn, he comes right over to say hello. So right off the bat, he's showing a very social personality. As for mom, when we split mom up from baby in the morning to get height and weight measurements, well, she was much better today versus yesterday. But she was still a little anxious and pacing, and very much wanted to get back with her baby.
Live Science: How often is the calf examined?
Patch: The vet is onsite every day to check on the calf. The basic exam is done by keepers in the morning; we take the height measurement and the weight measurement. We have a basic digital household scale we put it on the ground and get a baseline reading of, for example, my body weight. And then I will pick up the calf and stand on the scale and get that reading. And we deduct my body weight from that to get an accurate reading of the calf's current size.
When the vet comes in, he's listening to the heart, he's listening to the lungs, he's examining the umbilical cord area to make sure we're getting a good heal, dry and fall-off of the remaining cord. And as baby begins to start to defecate, we want to look at that to see the consistency, and take samples to make sure all is in order.
Live Science: The baby and his father, Oliver, seem interested in each other through a screen. Will they have any face-to-face interaction at all?
Patch: In due time, we hope to be able to combine all three animals together. Oliver's curious nature is already a very positive sign, because usually giraffe males do not take part in any of the rearing of the young. The fact that Oliver is so calm and inquisitive is promising to us that eventually they will share space, but we won't try that for another couple of months.
Live Science: Has April's interaction with Oliver changed now that the baby's part of the picture?
Patch: She's certainly protective of the calf around Oliver. But we still do get snippets of time where she goes over and they greet one another, and lick each other and engage in what I guess you'd consider a giraffe hug.
Live Science: What would you say is the secret to April's internet success? Why do you think she captured the widespread audience that she did?
Patch: I think it's attributed to the genuine and organic nature of the "giraffe cam." I think people were inquisitive and not only wanting to learn more about giraffe birth, but also to see behind the scenes, and to see the care and effort that go into maintaining these giraffes by their keepers and staff. This sense of voyeurism almost a reality-TV-show-like approach through the giraffe cam has really garnered an emotional connection between the fans and us.

According to Warners attorney, Shawn Holley, shes been battling insomnia, which prompted her to be under the influence of a prescribed sleep aid.
'RHONY' STAR LUANN D'AGOSTINO'S DAUGHTER VICTORIA ARRESTED FOR DWI
We have letters and reports from Jackies doctors which prove a long history of insomnia and which strongly support our contention that Jackie was driving unconscious after taking Ambien, which had been prescribed to her, Holley toldTMZ.
I reached out to the D.A.s Office weeks ago and was assured that deputies would review our reports before filing charges," Holley added. "We are extremely disappointed that the D.A.s Office filed these charges without reviewing our evidence, as promised.
The West Los Angeles Sheriff told E! News that there were no injuries and that Warners vehicle rolled back, prompting it to hit a police car. Warner got out of the car without issue and was reportedly compliant with officials on the scene before the arrest. Police arent sure how the car rolled back and the case has been assigned to a detective.

This isnt the first time Warner has faced trouble.
After her reality TV series, Work Out, ended on Bravo in 2010, she sold her Beverly Hills gym. On her website, Warner revealed that after she turned 40, she fell into [a] crisis.
I didnt like doing the type of TV that I was doing, which made me uncomfortable and uneasy, wrote Warner. I had succeeded in many ways, but always had very tumultuous relationships, which caused me quite a lot of misery. Shortly thereafter, I sold my clinic and gym and found myself wondering whats next? My last TV show didnt do well and the shooting conditions were so bad that I vowed never to do television again unless it was a fully positive experience."
Warner also added that she quit drinking for a year and I quit dating for a year, as well as relied on prayer to help her find a new purpose in life. Warner insisted that after hitting the gym more, she was mentally and physically stronger than I have ever been in my life.

What It REALLY Means to Build a Functional Fitness Community – BarBend (blog)

In the modern era of exercise, health, and wellness, functional fitness is the new craze. Many of the old powerhouse globo gyms have seen a large drop off in memberships to smaller, community based fitness facilities. Whether their clients have gone to CrossFit, Soul Cycle, Orangetheory Fitness, or one of the many other types of boutique gyms, one thing is clear: community based functional fitness is the new craze, and its here to stay.
The question some might be asking themselves is, Why have so many people gone toward a group fitness training model, and what exactly does a fitness community entail?
At Westchester Fit (formerly known as CrossFit Westchester), over the past seven years weve been centrally focused on the client experience. From the first impression when a client walks into the gym, until the time class is done, the goal has always been to make this the best hour of someones day. We are literally trying to melt their stress away.
This is not just about physical exercise, but also about obtaining mental clarity and peace of mind when someone is done with class. The community is a place where the vulnerable feel comfortable to fail as often as they succeed. Its through failure that true growth occurs, and our mission has been to create a place where this is not only acceptable, but where pushing yourself is encouraged, as that is where progress is made. At the end of the day the community is a place where friends of all ages and walks of life come together to workout with one common goal in mind, be better than yesterday. The euphoria and sense of accomplishment our members feel creates an addiction to our program.
Outside of the culture, people gravitate towards functional fitness for the physical results. You might ask yourself, why would anyone go into a group fitness class, if they can workout on their own for a fraction of the cost at a globo gym?
Theres something really powerful about groups and shared experiences. People might be skeptical about their ability to change if theyre by themselves, but a group will convince them to suspend disbelief. A community creates belief. Duhigg, The Power of Habit
Working out as part of a community not only helps to keep people motivated, but there is a certain level of accountability that will never be experienced by training alone. The camaraderie and relationships built help to create intensity and purpose in ones workouts which yield results.
In addition, the classes are always led by an instructor who is there to motivate and educate the athletes. There is a sense of semi-private personal training within the group model. The top functional fitness facilities will always make their clients feel as if theyre receiving personal attention, which is paramount for retention. Lastly, in these communities the good coaches actually care if you show up. The old model of having people pay and hoping they dont show up is gone. Its flipped the industry upside down.
The tides in the fitness industry are always shifting, and while functional fitness is impacting health clubs memberships around the world, it is important for their business owners to be light on their feet and be able to shift their focus when needed.
Seven years ago, CrossFit gyms only offered CrossFit. Gyms that havent adapted with the changing tide have now fallen off. Offering additional services such as weightlifting, endurance, gymnastics, mobility, and non-barbell classes to name a few have set the larger gyms apart.
The ability to cater to the community and their shifting needs is what will keep these business around for the long haul. People have already grown accustomed to high intensity training, and the good feeling received from the workouts; the way to keep the community alive and thriving is always ensuring that the services offered are in line with client demand. Ruling the gym with an iron fist will eventually lead people to seek services outside of your facility, even if they have grown to love you and your staff.
Make the choice easy for them to stay by offering what your community wants, and not just what you want.

Juice Bar New Hub of Fitness Culture – The Arkanas Traveller

Clean cut wood-finished panels, bright hanging lights and succulents stand out when first entering Nutrition Hog, a local fitness-promoting nutritional shake bar. But its the quality of its health drinks that seems to make it stand out among the growing fitness culture of the town.
Nutrition Hog provides a series of drinks as well as free wellness tests at their new location. It also is coming in something different then most fitness clubs of Fayetteville: a tea bar with meal replacement protein shakes, plus tea and aloe, all of which are pharmaceutical grade products.
I wanted something that was easier, cheaper and good for me, owner Dean Martinez said, as he describes his inspiration behind opening the business. I got into optimum nutrition for the best price.
The teas and protein shakes vary in the types of flavors, such as birthday cake and cookie dough, that are offered but the products they offer are set apart from others, Dean Martinez said.
We use a green tea leaf extract rather than the coffee bean, Martinez said. Its different from the bean since the tea leaf gives more of a steady increase of energy along the way unlike the high spike and then crash that the bean gives.
These teas actually burn calories when being consumed. They are shown to have quick results with weight loss as well, Martinez said. In as little as three days, there has been a few inches of weight lost around the waist, he said.
The different teas as well as the aloe shots and various different shakes are really drawing the crowd in, he said.
Wife and co-owner Cherry Martinez said there was a big boom with the business when it opened at the Grove Drive location March 6.
Right now, were cooling off, Cherry Martinez said. It all started with one post and then we exploded.
The new Nutrition Hog location was inspired by the owner of the original location on Township, Rick Hall, Cherry Martinez said.
One of the main mottos of Nutrition Hog is said to be affirming people where they are and growing them from there, Cherry Martinez said.
We love to empower people, Cherry Martinez said.
The clubs also works with sororities and other organizations for percentage nights and other activities, she said.
The percentage nights are cool because they not only give back to the charities of the organizations, but it in turn helps us attract business, Cherry Martinez said.
This business attracts students on normal nights too, he said.
This is my second time coming here and I really like coming here because I feel healthy without having to work out, senior Peyton Cashion said.
Not only do people like the health benefits they also like the tastes of the shakes and teas, Dean Martinez said.
The shakes taste like ice cream, senior Anna Travis said. The teas are sweeter but they are still good.
The success of Nutrition Hog in Fayetteville inspired the Martinezes to open a location in Romania, and they are hoping to donate proceeds to help stop sex-trafficking of girls there, Dean Martinez said.
We really want to help give the opportunity to people who dont necessarily have it, Dean Martinez said.
Not only is Nutrition Hog trying to attract business with their selection of drinks, but they hope to encourage health and overall fitness too, she said.
Nutrition Hog is located off of Wedington Drive on Grove Drive near Planet Fitness. Its hours are from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

After Easter best time to lose weight – NEWS.com.au

After Easter is the perfect time to start a weight loss program because the motivation to shed unwanted kilos is "at its peak", experts say.
Professor Manny Noakes, Research Director for Nutrition and Health at the CSIRO, says seizing on the guilt felt after periods of indulgence, like Easter, is often a great source of inspiration.
"If you are going to start a weight loss program make sure your motivation is at its peak, and I think after Easter would be a good opportunity when that motivation might be at its peak," Prof Noakes told AAP.
Another motivating factor is knowing that for every kilo lost blood pressure goes down by one millimetre of mercury, blood fat profiles improve and your blood sugar levels go down, Prof Noakes said.
"There are certainly some very immediate impacts of weight loss even a few days into your weight loss program."
Two thirds of adults in Australia are carrying too much weight as a result of poor diet and a lack of physical activity.
A recent Australian Institute of Health and Welfare report showed that if every overweight Australian lost just three kilos the burden of obesity would be reduced by 14 per cent.
Losing five to 10 per cent of your body weight is a "realistic" goal that will have a significant impact on an individual's health, says Lisa Renn, accredited practising dietitian and spokesperson for the Dietitians Association of Australia.
"People read things in the media and see that people are losing 30, 40, 50 kilos and think that's what they need to loose. Those huge amounts of weight that people think they need to lose is really off-putting," says Ms Renn.
Exercise is essential to ensuring the best results, says Associate Professor Amanda Salis, from University of Sydney's Boden Institute of Obesity, Nutrition, Exercise & Eating Disorders.
Research shows combining dietary energy restriction combined with exercise will speed up weight loss and fat loss in particular, she said.
"It's almost impossible to keep weight off without exercise," she added.

Weight loss – Fitness model shows how to lose fat in TWO WEEKS before your holiday – Express.co.uk

NEWS DOG MEDIA
Personal trainer, Courtney Black, 20, from East London, has become an Instagram sensation for her muscular body and fitness advice.
She showed her 158,000 followers how to extra weight in under two weeks - without any fad diets or detoxes.
After eating over 7500 calories each day in burgers, milkshakes and cakes on a trip in New York in December 2016, she claims she lost weight following just four simple steps.
Her tricks include sweating it out in the sauna, working out your maintenance calories, cutting out rest periods in your workout, and even giving yourself a cheat meal.

Sarah Stage shows how she works out
Weight loss tips from Instagram fitness model Courtney Black on how you can shrink in two weeks before your holiday
And the results were clear to her army of fans when Courtney showed off her two week post-holiday transformation from bloated to toned.
Courtney explains: I went to New York for five days after Christmas and gorged on calorific treats at every meal.
However when I returned home, I felt awful and bloated. The extra weight I put on made me feel lowsy and slow.
I absolutely hate hearing about juice cleanses or shake diets in order to lose weight. In my opinion, they should be banned, she added.
GETTY
Instead she proposes her four step plan to get you in shape quick.
Your body cannot change that drastically over such a short period of time, Courtney says of sudden weight gain.
Most of the weight that you have gained is water retention from not drinking enough water, lack of physical activity and eating high-salt and sugary foods.
Although a session in the sauna wont make you lose weight, itll help you sweat out a lot of the water your body is holding onto, which is subsequently making you look bloated.
A bit of time in steam room is also great for relaxation and good for clearing your skin after an unhealthy holiday.
GETTY
Get back in the gym and make every workout count.
In order to really shed that excess holiday weight, you need to make your exercise time more intense by make the rest periods during your workout shorter.
Its no good simply following some general/popular low calorie diet you need to work out the precise maintenance calories your body needs in order to lose weight.
For a female, your maintenance calories could be anything from 1400-2000 calories (depending on your weight, height and how often you workout).
You need to be eating below your maintenance to lose weight but never drop more than 500 calories under that figure.
There are a plenty of online calculators that will help you work this out or get professional advice.
GETTY
Restock your fridge with lots of healthy and nutritious food but give yourself a cheat meal too.
A weekly cheat meal (rather than a whole cheat day!) should be a part of your diet in order to bounce back to your ideal weight as they boost your metabolism and help you shed those pounds.
There are significant weight-loss benefits to a planned cheat meal. It encourages your body to burn calories more rapidly instead of allowing it to adjust to a lower calorie lifestyle.
This is the ONE thing you can do to reverse the diet damage of Easter.

The TV personality took a trip down memory lane to share a picture of herself after she had lost a considerable amount of weight.
"This picture reminds me of such a sad time. I was miserable, depressed, and losing weight like it was carbon dioxide," Minnie said.
Despite going through a challenging time, nothing could stop Minnie from giving her all to her career.
"I still got up and went to work and continued my hustle, no amount of pain was going to stop me from achieving my goals. So I worked harder and smarter," she explained.
Minnie added that she allowed herself to cry and "faked" happiness when she needed to.
"I gave myself moments to cry and moments to fake happiness, until I was finally happy again. I never want to be this skinny again. I honestly believe we go through s**t so we can fully appreciate the good."
