Former Mpls. fitness trainer killed in shooting at Florida gym – KMSP-TV

MIAMI (KMSP) - A Minnesota man was one of two managers who were shot and killed by a former employee at a gym in Miami over the weekend.
On Saturday afternoon, 33-year-old Abeku Wilson walked into the Equinox Gym at the Shops at Merrick Park and killed two people before turning the gun on himself, according to Fox-affiliate WSVN-7. One of the people killed was the gyms fitness manager, identified as Mario Hortis of St. Cloud, Minnesota.
Hortis grew up in St. Cloud and worked at The Firm in Minneapolis before moving to Florida in 2005.
Mario had a presence you felt as soon as you met him, The Firm wrote in a Facebook post. We will miss Marios warm heart and engaging smile. Our hearts are broken.
According to the Miami-Dade Police Department, the shooter was let go from his job at the gym earlier that day due to workplace violence, according to a statement from the Miami-Dade Police Department. He had to be escorted off the premises.
Wilson returned to the gym a short time later armed with a handgun and fired several shots at both managers. Both victims were taken to the hospital, where they both died of their injuries.

Getting fit and staying fit and healthy both pre- and post-baby area challenge for many women, especially when it comes to getting back intoa physical routine after giving birth.
Moms who want to get in shape post-baby face a slew of different challenges, including fatigue, body image concerns and emotional stress.
The rules about how soon and how much you should exercise are different for every woman, but most doctors and midwives encourage moms-to-be to keep up an exercise plan throughout pregnancy and beyond. For many new moms, exercise classes and any fitness regime can start roughly 6 to 8 weeks after birth, depending on whether it was a vaginal or cesarean section birth.

Yehudis Teitelbaum of Nanuetbrings her 8 pound son Mendy to the gym and says she has lost weight since starting here in September.
"I gained a lot of weight after I got married; happy weight, she says. I lost 50 pounds since Ive been working out and I have my stepdaughters wedding in June so I am hoping to lose 15 more, she adds.
Teitelbaum has seen an improvement in her health and energy level since she started under the guidance of the team.
I was given the clearance to work out six weeks after (the baby)but I felt weak and tired at first, says Teitelbaum. She took advantage of the help offered and encourages other moms to get moving sooner rather than later.I think its important to go right away because people get comfortable in their mommy body, and their mommy clothes, in their mommy pants, she says.
"Its not a gym but a culture," says Eckert. She encourages women to make the effort for the positive physical and mental payoff of regular exercise.
We underestimate ourselves when we say I cant do this, its too hard; come in because we show you motivation, saysEckert.

At Crossfit Momentum, Stephanie Vaughan's goal is getting moms healthy pre- and post-baby.
If they were members through pregnancy, we start them back into the regular classes and scale movements as necessary" after delivery, she says.We have new members come in for a pre-screening with one of our coaches; some may stick with personal training or our non-barbell class, Velocity.
Vaughan says both pregnant and new moms should expect modified movements for their workouts, with gentle moves to protecttheabdominal wall and pelvic floor while they are healing.
The Rockland gym offers a range of programs including Velocity, a high intensity workout, and Crossfit, moving between high and low intensity. Vaughan says new moms have to remember to take the time to heal and build strength post-birth.
Women are strong and need to be strong through the birthing process," she says. "But this is also not the time to be competitive with the others in the class. This is a time to stay fit and maintain."

Riverstone Yoga in Tarrytown is more about community then strenuous activity. Step into the tranquil space andthere isa circle of new moms on yoga mats and tiny babies situated in front of them on cozy pillows ready for class.
"We really pride ourselves on being a learning center for deeper learning for yoga and yourself," says owner Patricia Fischer-Donohue. The center offers a pre-birth class calledMoms 2 B; and about 80 percent of new moms continue on to the mommy and baby class.
"As long as the doctor says its okay, we want you here because the more you move the better you feel," she says.
The community of moms and babies serves as a support group for participants with babies ranging from six weeks to eight months at this Thursday morning class. And even though little ones are welcome, the focus is on the caregiver.
"Its really about the mom its not about the baby. So the baby is there and the baby is going to cry and sometimes this place has the volume thats through the roof, but its great because nobody cares and the moms are in it together. Which is really, really important."
New mom Tina Tiongson relishes her weekly class where sheand her 8-month-old daughter feel welcome.

"It's a really great opportunity to get out of the house with your baby; there are very few places you can be comfortable bringing your baby, all your stuff and take care of your baby and be around other people." She started prenatal yoga in Astoria, Queens before moving to Tarrytown; she is a yoga newbie and plans to continue.
"I started at eight weeks because that was my first opportunity for support at eight weeks, and I went religiously."
"Its very different than a regular yoga class; we are very mindful of the changes that have happened in the body," says yoga instructorTori Cronk.
Trying to create a body-positive environment, Cronk encourages new moms by teaching properbreathing techniques and being in the moment.
"We take real care in moving and breathing in a very specific way so the body can start to re-acclimate and the moms can connect with their evolving body and we incorporate the babies in the practice as well."
It's an environment where new moms are welcome to care for the baby, whether it be feeding, changing or cuddling, without leaving the space.
"Nobody gets upset if the babies cry and sometimes we do a lot of yoga and sometime we do a little bit of yoga," says Cronk. "We really go with the flow; there's no set format because babies are unpredictable."

YMCA offers program for sufferers of Parkinson’s disease – Franklin News Post

Franklin County Family YMCA is offering a new addition to its ScriptFit program for clients who are battling Parkinsons disease. Doctor-referred clients can now participate in non-contact boxing training that can offer improvements in symptoms and motor control. Boxing programs specifically for Parkinsons patients have gained popularity nationwide in the last several years and research has found that such training offers many advantages over traditional exercise options.
A typical session of the Ys Parkinsons Boxing Club program consists of a warm up, strength, flexibility and balance exercises, and boxing drills. Participants work through different combinations of drills on a double end bag (a light bag suspended on an elastic cord), focus mitts (pads held by a trainer), the heavy bag, and slip bag (a light bag for practicing evasive work), arranged in timed rounds. Each workout emphasizes endurance, coordination and balance, according to individual client needs. The intensity of training can be adjusted for clients who may be suffering from other ailments or who are returning to exercise.
After just a few weeks, clients in this group show significant improvements in movement quality, Fitness Director Randy Simpson said. Their stride looks smoother, they can work a bag for a full 3-minute round, and they start beating me to the punch on mitt drills. The best part is watching the look of surprise on their faces when they realize that theyre moving like a fighter balanced, agile and confident. As a lifelong martial artist, I have serious respect for how hard they work to overcome their challenges.
Moderate, sustained aerobic exercise has been shown to have protective benefits for the brain. Existing neurons are maintained, new neurons are created, cranial circulation improves, and memory and motor control are improved. Research has shown that non-contact boxing training has significant positive impacts on gait, balance, mobility, coordination, endurance, strength and movement quality. It also offers a challenging, fun option for people who dont enjoy typical cardio exercise options.
Y members can join the program by signing up for the Script Fit with a note from their doctor, Simpson said. The Boxing Club option is currently only available for Parkinsons patients, but Id love to offer it to other groups in the future. Were seeking sponsors for equipment so that we can grow the program with more bags and gloves we can expand our ability to offer this in a group format.
For more information about ScriptFit, or about the Parkinsons Boxing Club program, contact Randy Simpson, YMCA Fitness Director, at 489-9622.

Arizona youth joins tribal officials to push for diabetes program funds – Navajo-Hopi Observer

WASHINGTON Alton Villegas offered an unusual call to action March 29 for an 11-year-old boy: Destroy the ice cream man.
Alton is a member of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community where nearly 10 percent of tribal members have Type 2 diabetes, including members of his family.
My mom and my grandma have diabetes, a lot of people in Salt River have diabetes, sadly, said Alton, who has been diagnosed as pre-diabetic. I think a lot of people have diabetes because they dont eat healthy and they dont exercise.
Thats what brought Alton to Washington March 29, where he was the youngest of six witnesses urging the Senate Indian Affairs Committee to reauthorize the Special Diabetes Program for Indians.
The program grants $150 million a year to about 300 programs that push diabetes prevention to tribes in 35 states, said Rear Adm. Chris Buchanan, acting director of the Indian Health Service. The program will end after September if it is not reauthorized.
Since the program began in 1997, tribal obesity rates have remained stubbornly high, said Sen. John Hoeven, R-North Dakota. He said Native Americans still have a greater chance of being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes than any other group in America, and that diabetes is their fifth-leading cause of death.
But Hoeven, the committee chairman, also acknowledged at the hearing that the grants have helped lower diabetes and its complications, such as limb amputations, heart disease and kidney failure.
But theres still more work to be done.
The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, like other grantees, uses its grant to educate families on the benefits of exercise and balanced diets, offering free family-oriented exercise classes and programs that promote healthy lifestyles.
After a 6-year-old on the reservation was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes about three years ago, the tribal council began more screening at schools and found 52 percent of students were above the 95th percentile for weight.
When a screening showed that Alton was at risk for Type 2 diabetes, his family learned that he qualified for the Youth Wellness Camp in Prescott. Grant money from the federal program lets the tribe send at-risk youth to the camp.
I wanted to be healthier, so I went to camp, Alton said. I wanted to be able to help my mom and my grandma be healthier.
The healthy eating and daily exercise at camp helped Alton lose almost 16 pounds. His mother, Felicia Jimerson, said Altons new outlook on eating healthy and exercising is rubbing off on her three other kids.
Alton said that he tries to help his family and friends make healthier decisions, but they do not always listen.
I tell them all the time but not a lot of people care, cause that means they have to give up Hot Cheetos, said Alton, who has seen his friends buy at least four bags of the snack a day from the ice cream man.
We must destroy the ice cream man! Alton told the committee, to laughter.
Rachel Seepie, another member of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community credits some of her success against her Type 2 diabetes to educational programs funded by the grant program.
After initially managing her condition with medication, she decided to turn instead to exercise and eating well. That has helped her lose weight, lower her blood sugar, decrease her average heart rate and complete two Iron Man triathlons, Seepie said.
Now, she is a senior fitness specialist with the Diabetes Service Program and teaches group exercise classes on the reservation.
My vision is that the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and our members will learn how to become healthier, and they will have long full lives without Type 2 diabetes, Seepie told the committee.
Jimerson said after the hearing that can only happen if the grant program is reauthorized.
I think if they can continue that funding, its definitely going to make a change, she said. If that funding goes away, were in huge trouble.

Toby Reed Lost 95 Pounds: ‘I Couldn’t Let My Newborn Son Down, So I Had to Figure Out How to Change’ – Yahoo Health

Weight-Loss Win is an original Yahoo series that shares the inspiring stories of people who have shed pounds healthfully.
Toby Reed is 36 and 6 feet tall, and he currently weighs 185 pounds. In 2010, after seeing the tragic deaths of his immediate family caused partly by obesity, he was determined to forge a healthier path for the sake of his newborn son. This is the story of his weight-loss journey.
The Turning Point
I knew my weight was an issue my whole life, but I just ignored it. My whole family was unhealthy. My brother weighed over 400 pounds and my dad was over 300 pounds, so I felt that it was just how our family was supposed to be. We were constantly made fun of in school by other kids, but then we would just go home and eat our worries away. We ate fast food almost daily and drank soda nonstop. As I got older, I tried diets that would result in losing some weight only to regain all of it and more after I quit.
In 2010, my wife was pregnant with our first child and life seemed great for us. My parents had just retired and moved to be closer to us for the baby. Within two weeks of relocating, my mom passed away unexpectedly. Shortly after that, my 31-year-old brother died suddenly. His death certificate actually said severe obesity as the cause of death. This was a huge loss for me. We were less than two years apart in age, and he was my best friend. It wasnt until the following year that I got the final message when my dad died. Now the last of my immediate family was gone and I realized that I was probably next since I led the same unhealthy lifestyle as they had. I couldnt let my newborn son down, so I had to figure out how to change.
The Changes
I strongly believe in the saying If you fail to plan then plan to fail, so I put together some obtainable small goals and thought about how I would get there. The feeling of checking a goal off of my list was so powerful, it motivated me to check the next one off even if the goal was to walk around the block. It was still me doing something toward my ultimate goal.
For my diet, I knew that quick fix diets didnt work for me, so I needed a complete lifestyle overhaul. I started with small but impactful changes like eliminating sugar, soda, processed junk, and fast food. I wanted to not only lose weight but be healthy by adding nutritious whole foods into my diet like spinach, kale, probiotics, and chia seeds. I kept a simple food journal for a few months that made me accountable to myself.
Some of my diet rules:
Drink two glasses of water before every meal. I added lemon for the flavor and cleansing benefits.
One trick that worked for me was adding chia seeds to my beverages like green tea. They are packed with fiber, omega-3s, and protein, so they kept me full throughout the day while adding very few calories.
Measure everything out. It was enlightening to see what a true serving of a food was and what I was consuming daily. Every bite counts.
Make every meal at least 50 percent veggies and I usually ate a healthy protein alongside it the veggies, like chicken, lean beef, or salmon. I tried to add in a lot of spices in my cooking that added a lot of flavor without the calories. I also added healthy fats into my diet, like coconut oil.
Limit carbs which included fruits for me, even though they are healthy. Most people assume that fruits are a free pass but they can be high in sugar and the calories add up quickly. I usually ate a banana and another serving of fruit daily.
Treat myself to a cheat meal once a week. I would eat whatever I wanted without gorging myself, then it was back to the diet. I knew that there were going to be days that I screwed up, but I didnt let that spiral out of control. I got back up and went back to my routine.
Wait 20 minutes after eating my meal. If I still felt hungry after I finished my food, I waited 20 minutes before touching any more food. I found that my mind took a little while to realize that I was actually full.
Today, I eat a lot of vegan meals, so that has been a major change for me.
For exercise, building a routine that I could stick to was huge for me. I hated the gym for a number of reasons but loved to shoot basket, so thats what I did. I wanted to start off doing something that I enjoyed to get me in a routine. Once I was in that routine then I increased the intensity of my 40-minute workout by spending half the time doing body-weight exercise routines that I found online with squats, push ups, burpees, core exercises, and jumps. As a reward, I would go shoot hoops for the second half.
Other little things that I did were, I got up 20 minutes early for work to walk or slowly jog, always took the stairs, parked at the far end of the parking lot to get extra steps, and walked during commercials while watching TV.
While I was making these changes, I felt like I finally had control of my life. There were tough days when I wanted to give up, but I fought through them. Accomplishing some of my smaller goals helped me push forward. Plus, giving up really wasnt an option. I knew that I wouldnt be alive to see my kids get older if I didnt change, and I wasnt going to let that happen.
What kept me motivated was knowing why I was doing it to be there for my family. I wanted to be the dad that was able to run and play with the kids in the park. Once my mind was set, then there was no going back.
The After
My life changed so much after my weight loss, in fact, I have dedicated my life to helping others change in various ways. People are very surprised to learn that I was almost 300 pounds a few years ago. Before my change, I had terrible back pain and could barely walk. But once I started losing weight, the back pain went away. I am now able to go on bike rides, run, and keep up with the kids.
Emotionally, I have changed greatly. Before my weight loss, I was not confident in myself, I was very quiet and just kept to myself. Now I feel confident to speak my opinion and I feel comfortable in my own skin. I became a stronger person inside and out. I feel that I am able to accomplish anything that I truly set my mind to. It goes to show what hard work, dedication, and perseverance can do.
I was surprised by a lot of things after my weight loss. As much as I hate to say it, I feel that I am treated differently, people are much nicer to me, and I feel more respected now. I dont think a lot of people realize how hard it is being overweight. They assume that you are just lazy with no self control so they dont have a lot of respect for you.
The Maintenance
One of my worst fears was that I would start putting weight back on once my body adjusted. My way to combat that was to work on adding lean muscle through weight lifting. That way I would turn my body into a calorie-burning machine. I lift weights about three days a week and remain active with mixed martial arts. I love to challenge myself. Practicing muay thai and krav maga allows me to grow physically and emotionally while still being exciting and fresh. The last thing I want to do is get bored with my workouts. I view exercise as being fun instead of a mundane task.
We practice moderation in our house. There is nothing that I consider off-limits, but I dont overdo it and dont make treats a daily habit. For example, my family eats cake to celebrate a special occasion instead of having dessert on, say, a Tuesday. We eat healthy at our house. My older son helps me chop up veggies or ingredients for our smoothies, and in general, my kids know the importance of eating healthy. I tell them about my parents and brother, so they understand just how much it means.
People inspire me, there are so many great stories out there of people overcoming life or death circumstances that I cant even fathom. If others can overcome dire situations, then I can surely overcome my weight issue. I try to put things in perspective that way.
The Struggles
Balance is the hardest part for me. It is hard to draw the line on moderation and enjoying life. It is easy to be out with friends and want to share some unhealthy foods and of course it is OK to eat poorly sometimes, but how do you know when enough is enough? I just try to remember what the old me was like and remind myself that I dont want to go back to being that person again.
With two kids, finding workout time is hard. I usually make it a game with my kids in the backyard, but it can still be a challenge. I find myself getting up really early before my family is awake to work out and meditate.
Advice
My best advice is to put together a plan on paper. Consider this a lifestyle change and not a diet. Keep it simple though dont set yourself up for failure. Keep your goals challenging but achievable like walking for 20 minutes after work. Keep a food journal in the beginning to hold yourself accountable. Eliminate sugar from your diet. Schedule your workouts like they are work meetings. And do something that you enjoy. It is much easier to stick to exercise if you look forward to doing it. Everyone is different, so you have to find what works best for you. Dont compare yourself to others. Your weight-loss journey is going to look different than other peoples. Find a way to make it enjoyable!

The world of women's magazines is not always known for its exceptionally good faith advice, and Cosmopolitan has been responsible for some real corkers. Pro tip: if you really want to sexually satisfy your boyfriend, you don't need to slog him in the nuts with a burlap sack full of ice cubes or whatever the hell it is Cosmo told you to do.
But this one definitely takes the cake. Cosmo US posted an article with the following headline on their website.
The basic heft of the article was about a woman namedSimone Harbinson and her struggle with a rare form of cancer, viewed through the prism of weight loss and dieting for some reason. Featuring weird passages like this one:
After her surgeries, though, Simone describes her eating as even more erratic. Her binges became more frequent. Shed walk every few days for fresh air, but that was the extent of her workouts. So it came as no surprise when excess weight piled on. I just wasnt in the right mindset to do anything, she says. I really struggled most days to comprehend what I had been through.
Like putting on weight after major cancer surgery is somehow a terrible thing. The second-to-last paragraph now deleted reads as follows:
Simones weight loss success is proof that ANYONE can lose weight without breaking a sweat simply by eating more mindfullyno gym required.
The responses online have sure been interesting.
Hmm. Swing and a miss.

Amazon’s Parent Dashboard helps track kids’ digital diets – CNET

Hard at work at the Strawberry Shortcake beauty salon.
My 4-year-old daughter often nabs my wife's iPhone and disappears for hours into the YouTube Kids app. We intermittently check on what she's watching, but it's hard to keep track of every video.
Since lots of parents deal with this issue, Amazon decided to roll out a new way to check on your kid's digital diet. It's a service for its FreeTime kids' apps, called Parent Dashboard.
The dashboard, which is free to use starting Wednesday and can be accessed from any web browser at parents.amazon.com, provides daily activity reports on each of your accounts on FreeTime, an app that provides a gated, age-appropriate experience for kids on Amazon Fire tablets. The new website also offers handy flash cards on many kids' books and games, to give parents quickly digestible information on the items their kids are looking at in the app.
"I would love to see parents engaging more with their kids, using this information to further customize their child's experience in [FreeTime] to make the product better for kids," said Kurt Beidler, Amazon's kids and family director.
Parent Dashboard fits well in the online retailer's strategy of catering to parents and families, in hopes of getting mom, dad and the kids all hooked on the company's many websites and services. The new service could also entice more people to join FreeTime Unlimited, the paid version of FreeTime that offers curated sets of books, apps and games for specific age groups, starting at $3 a month.
Screenshots of the dashboard (left) and a "discussion card" (right).
The daily reports in the dashboard show colorful pie charts for time spent in four categories in FreeTime: books, video, apps and games. Click on any pie chart and the site will show the amount of time your kid spent per day in that category, as well as a breakdown of every video watched or book read or game played. Within these lists, parents can click through to flash cards, which Amazon calls "discussion cards," that offer a quick synopsis of the show viewed or app used, as well as general questions parents can ask their kids.
For instance, for the Strawberry Shortcake Berry Beauty Salon app, the discussion card tells me my daughter can help "style hair, clothing and make sure nails are sparkling," and I can ask open-ended questions like "What part of this game do you like the most?" or "How did you use your imagination to play this game?"
At best, these reports and flash cards could help parents get more involved in their kids' digital worlds and encourage their kids to do more reading and less gaming. At worst, the daily reports could just offer guilty reminders of how much time their kids spend watching videos (OK, maybe that's just my kids).

A Google search for ways to lose weight for women garners 51,200,000 results. For men, its 48,600,000. A Google search for anti aging products for women gets approximately 1,590,000 results. For men, its 1,440,000.
If you spend five minutes watching TV, youll see commercials for dozens of these products, which dont live up to their hype.
For example, Garcinia cambogia, a small, green fruit shaped like a pumpkin has been known as a popular diet supplement since it was featured on the Dr. Oz show in 2012. Even though animal studies were promising, one study conducted by Columbia University showed no effectiveness, and 12 others found that, on average, the supplement can help people lose about only 2 pounds over several weeks.
The fruit didnt measure up to its hype. So which of these many products work?
Weight loss
Authoritynutrition.com ranked 12 different weight loss supplements. Two of their winners are glucomannan and Orlistat (Alli).
Glucomannan is a fiber found in roots of elephant yam. It absorbs water and sits in your gut, which makes you feel full and helps you eat fewer calories. Three studies have shown that this supplement, along with a healthy diet, can help someone lose 8-10 pounds in five weeks. It can also lower blood pressure, cholesterol and is effective against constipation.
Orlistat works by inhibiting the breakdown of fat, making a person take in fewer calories from fat. According to authoritynutrition.com, 11 studies have shown that this supplement can increase weight loss by 6 pounds compared to dummy pills. Other studies have shown that it slightly reduces blood pressure and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Hydroxycut is one of the most advertised and most popular weight loss supplements in the world. It contains several ingredients that claim to help with weight loss, including caffeine and various plant extracts.
While its wildly popular, only one study has shown that it helps people lose weight and theres no data on long-term effectiveness. This study showed that it caused someone to lose 21 pounds over a three-month period.
Caffeine is another popular weight loss supplement that often tops lists, and its easy to market since people regularly ingest it when they drink their morning coffee or tea.
Multiple short-term studies have shown that caffeine can boost someones metabolism by 3-11 percent, and increase fat burning by up to 29 percent. A few studies have even show that caffeine may cause some weight loss. While studies have encouraging results, building up a tolerance decreases these effects.
Anti aging
Numerous dermatologists told stylecaster.com that BB creams are not worth the hype, and are just overrated tinted moisturizers. The doctors also said that stretch mark creams and dark spot remover creams are not effective.
Other over-hyped anti-aging products included skin tighteners, overpriced moisturizers, pore strips, and detox products.
When it comes to products that could be worth your money, Goodhousekeeping.com has done the research. They tested 84 products over the course of 11 months. Here are the results.
Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle repair Moisturizer SPF 30 ($21 for 1 oz) was their best rated facial moisturizer. La Prairie Cellular Power Charge Night ($272 for 1.35 oz) was the best rated night cream. Another cheaper night cream option was Boots No7 Light Luminate Night Cream, which costs $25 for 1.6 oz.
If youre aiming to firm skin or correct skin tone, goodhousekeeping.com recommends Lancme Visionnaire Advanced Skin Corrector ($79 for 1 oz.), and LOreal Paris Youth Code Dark Spot Correcting Illuminating Serum Corrector ($25 for 1 oz.).
The best wrinkle smoother was Skyn Iceland Angelica Line Smoother at $65 for 1.5 oz.
