Obesity is a rapidly increasing epidemic more than one third of the adult population in our country is obese. This serious condition leads to additional health problems including diabetes, heart disease and stroke.
If left untreated, obesity can be fatal.
Higher medical costs are another cause for concern regarding obesity. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state medical costs for obese patients are about $1,500 higher than patients of normal weight.
Bariatric surgery is a tool to help obese patients with their battle to regain control of their health. Sleeve gastrectomy, a type of bariatric surgery offered nationwide, is now available via the Shannon Weight Loss Center.
The goal of bariatric surgery is to reduce the patients caloric intake and to curb hunger. The sleeve gastrectomy is a restrictive procedure which narrows the size of the stomach, causing the patient to consume fewer calories. The operation removes the receptors that trigger hunger which causes the appetite to decrease.
Bariatric surgery is a permanent change to the body. The team at the Shannon Weight Loss Center must make sure patients are mentally and physically capable of tolerating the procedure. Therefore, we follow patients pre-and post-operatively to help them succeed. National standards are used to determine if a patient qualifies for surgery.
Patients should expect to lose 60 to 70 percent of their excess body weight after the sleeve gastrectomy procedure. How quickly the weight is lost varies for each patient. They may be able to stop taking medications and reverse conditions such as hypertension, high cholesterol and diabetes.
Surgery is only one part of our patients weight loss journey. We can make sure the operation is a success, but the patient plays a huge role in making sure the surgery is successful.
They must adhere to a diet and make sure they exercise. The post-operative follow-up is intense because we want to make sure they are adhering to the program. Patients are given a bariatric manual that offers an in-depth look into the operation itself including pre-and post-operative care and dietary plans.
We think it is important to offer this procedure to patients locally. We have had patients undergo the surgery and they go off their medications, their diabetes improves, and their blood pressure goes down. These factors combined can provide long-term quality of life. It is a huge help to some of our patients and that is always our goal.
For more information about the sleeve gastrectomy procedure, please call the Shannon Weight Loss Center at 325-481-2344 or visit shannonhealth.com/services/weight-loss-center.aspx to read the testimonial of a patient who is experiencing a second chance of life after her surgery.

How to get rid of armpit fat: Lose your underarm bulge without going to the gym – Daily Star

GETTY
After months of dreary grey weather, the sun is finally here. But its not necessarily good news if youre self-conscious about your body.
As the temperature heats up many of us dread getting our lily-white legs and flabby arms out.
And women often struggle more with bingo wings and underarm fat because the average woman is 18-20% fat, whereas the average man only has 10-15% body fat.
Fat also distributes itself differently on ladies and often stores in areas including the buttocks, thighs, stomach and arms.
Take a look at these exceptional body transformations.
1 / 30
Elora Harre, 23 has lost eight stone
Underarm fat the little squishy bit between your arm and your breasts can be a particularly hard to shift.
However, you can banish this unsightly fat without any specialised gym equipment. In fact, the best way to get rid of excess body fat includes burning it off through cardiovascular exercise, resistance exercise and calorie control.
Here are three easy ways to get rid of armpit fat fast:
GETTY
1. Limit your daily calorie intake
To get rid of armpit fat you need to reduce your body fat overall. The best way to start burning fat is to reduce your calorie intake.
Eliminate junk food from your diet and swap it with vegetables, fruit, lean meats, fish and complex carbs like oatmeal, whole-grain breads and quinoa.
Make sure you drink plenty of water and stay hydrated as eople often mistake thirst for hunger.
If you cut 500 calories from your daily diet, you may be able to lose 1lb per week.
GETTY
2. Do HIIT workouts
High Intensity Interval Training aka HITT has become the new craze in exercise and for good reason.
HIIT workouts burn more calories during exercise, but also helps you continue to burn long after you've finished.
A study published last month by the Human Performance Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse found participants burned an average of 15 calories per minute, nearly twice amount they used up on a long run.
"HIIT has demonstrated to be the most effective training protocol for losing weight, building stamina, conditioning your body, and revving up your metabolism," says Eraldo Maglara, N.S.C.A.-C.P.T
And you dont need to hit the gym to do HIIT, all you need is your own bodyweight (although dumbbells and kettlebells are useful).
Simply perform an exercise as intenselyas you can for 30 seconds and then have a rest of no more than 15 seconds.
You can mix up the exercises between press ups, burpees, squats and lunges.
LDN Muscle founder Tom Exton shows off his shredded body

3. Lift weights
Add muscle-building work to your exercise regimen. Try doing the exercises above while holding weights.
If you dont have any weights at home, simply use your own weight for resistance. You can also try planking, triceps dips and deep squats.
As you add muscle tissue, you raise your metabolism and burn more calories even while resting.

Wanting to keep up with his young children is what inspired Simon Smith to lose almost five stone. Here he speaks to LEAH CASSADY about his success
SImon Smith didn't think about portion sizes and often finished his children's left overs. He struggled to sleep and found it difficult doing physical activities with his children, aged five and nine.
The 40-year-old said: I ate without monitoring my portion sizes, sometimes late at night, and also ignored the fact that I had eaten too much. Mopping up what the kids left at meal times was also a terrible habit and I could feel myself having mood swings more often, I became quite miserable."

He said: They were telling me how the plan focused on food optimisation and how it's not a diet as such. Cutting out the large amounts of junk food I ate was hard, but the plan makes you fill up with goodness, and the treat allowance is manageable, preventing me from craving chocolate.
Before it was the other way around, I would start with crisps and eat chocolate bars in between meals and then think about a meal after. Slimming World allows you to moderate everything in proportion and I now eat a lot of salads and vegetables."
When Simon first joined Slimming World, he lost a lot of weight and when he felt happy to do so, he also started going to a gym. He now weighs 14st 7lb - a total of 4st 12lb lost.
He said: When I felt the time was right, about six months in and three stone lighter, I went the gym with a fellow Slimming World friend. I felt more confident and fitter inside, once I started the gym I started losing the weight quickly again and I just felt so good again, the same as I did 15 years ago."

Simon, a business partnerships manager at PM Training, also goes running every other night and other Slimming World members have started to join him as they all train to take part in the London Marathon Walk in September.
He said: Now I have gained the confidence to run on the streets, whereas before I played cricket and golf for exercise but they are sports you can get away with being a big lad. Before I wore XXL in all shirts with an 18 inch collar and size 40 waist, but now I wear a 16 inch collar and am a size 34 waist.
I used to buy clothes that were unbranded just because they fitted me but now I love shopping, I'm back on designer labels with no intention of returning to the big clothes."

Simon says his wife has encouraged him throughout his weight loss, helping a lot with the food preparation.
My wife encourages me and helps a lot, she has lost a couple of pounds herself, but was slim to start with. The women at the group have taken me under their wing too, and put me on the right track with menu changes and general encouragement.
My friends and work colleagues say I look a lot better as a result of my weight loss. Everyone thinks I'm a changed man, before I would be reluctant to do anything, from days out to general walks around Trentham, but now weekends are very enjoyable with long walks and various other activities such as taking the children out on their bikes."
Simon's Slimming World group meet on a Tuesday at 7pm at The Minton Centre behind Holy Trinity Church in Hartshill. For more information or to join, contact Slimming World consultant Angela Bell on 07894 834679.

READERS WRITE: Want to lose weight – subtract and add calories – Southernminn.com

The nation-wide "number one resolution" that the majority of people make every Jan. 1 is to lose some weight. After 53 years of dieting, I have found 16 healthy, successful steps to share. Basically, it's as simple as adding and subtracting. In order to lose weight, one must subtract or consume fewer calories than what the body needs, while at the same time add the calories that are vital and necessary to one's health. Here are the steps to losing, and then maintaining, ones ideal weight:
1) Ask the Lord to help change your eating habits (Jeremiah 4:13).
2) Subtract by not eating the food while preparing meals.
3) Subtract by serving yourself smaller portions of food.
4) Subtract and refrain from all second helpings of food.
5) Subtract by backing away from the table before one feels full. 6) Subtract by putting all leftovers in the refrigerator. 7) Subtract by eliminating all foods high in sugar, salt, and fat.
8) Subtract by avoiding restaurants and fast food shops.
9) Subtract by grocery shopping when one is not hungry.
10) Subtract by fasting now and then, or even fasting one or two meals a week.
11) Add more fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains when preparing meals. 12) Add by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
13) Add by eating a piece of fruit when famished.
14) Add by drinking pure concentrated fruit juices to "perk" you up.
15) Add low sugar, low fat, and low salt recipes to your favorite menu file and using them weekly.
16) Add supplements such as herbs, vitamins, and minerals, etc. to your daily diet.
So how do I manage to keep the weight off and still feel strong and healthy? With God's help, I subtract and add calories.
"Then God said 'Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of the earth... it shall be food for you'... behold it was very good." (Genesis 1:29,31)
So to be successful, one must make these steps an on-going lifestyle habit, not a start-and-stop habit.

How a cruel comment prompted this mom to lose 90 pounds – Today.com

Motivation can come from the most unlikely places. For one mom, the push to lose weight came from a particularly surprising source: a cruel comment from an unknowing child at an indoor swimming pool.
"I was called a hippopotamus," Peggy Pullen, 48, told TODAY, recalling the moment in November 2014 she realized she needed to change. "In front of everybody, in front of my kids. The hardest part was the look on my children's faces. It wasn't just me who was humiliated it was them, too."
At the time, Pullen, a mom of four kids in Lehi, Utah, weighed over 200 pounds. That afternoon, she went home and cried, too embarrassed to even face her own family.
"I was just bawling," Pullen said. "I didn't want to eat. I didn't want to come out of the room or anything. I was in a really bad place. I needed to do something about it. I knew I had to make a choice that my children could learn from."
Peggy Pullen on the day she started her weight-loss transformation, January 1, 2015.

She had tried to shed the weight before through fad diets and pills Atkins, Weight Watchers, cabbage soup and more. But nothing really worked.
"Basically, any diet that has come out to the market, I've done," Pullen said.
"I knew that diets didn't work, so I wasn't going to go through that anymore," she added. "I needed to be challenged."
Pullen dances at a wedding. She weighed about 200 pounds at the time this photo was taken.

For Pullen, the answer was joining a 12-week program through BodyBuilding.com that helped her figure out what to eat and how to work out. She found support through other people in the program, who were also trying to lose weight and had shared their stories online.
The first step was the hardest: posting her "before" picture.
"It was a tough moment when my husband took my picture," she said. "I like to wear a lot of black and hide, and not show my husband my whole body. We as women like to hide sometimes, and I had my whole gut out and everything."
Pullen poses with her husband after her weight loss.
RELATED: Couple loses 298 pounds combined in a year with 3 easy steps
"I posted my picture and the second I did, I had a nervous breakdown," she added. "It was worse than the pool. (But) some young kid said he liked my picture, and then all these people started to show their support. I think they knew it was tough, what I had done."
Of course, what happened next wasn't much easier. Pullen had to curb her cravings for sweets and carbs. She also loves to cook and had to learn to alter her recipes to be healthier. As a newbie at the gym, she felt unwelcome and even bullied.
Pullen credits clean eating and weightlifting for her new shape.
"When you are fat very fat and you want to go and lift weights with the cool guys, they own the machines," she said. "You're not welcome and those cool guys are very close friends with the people who work there. They laugh at you, and they don't like an old, fat lady in their space, so they bully you."
But Pullen, who is 5 feet 3 inches tall, stuck to her routine and within 10 months was down to 120 pounds. For her, clean eating and lifting weights are what worked. She now weighs 110 pounds, and has kept the weight off for about a year and a half.
"One of the biggest things I (noticed) before I got fit was that I was always so tired," she said. "Junk food makes you tired. Today, I eat clean and whenever I get hungry, I eat protein first."
Pullen, now a bodybuilder, lost about 90 pounds.
RELATED: How this mom lost 80 pounds without surgery or joining a gym
That's not to say she doesn't allow for the occasional cheat meal or deprive her kids of things like birthday cake. Pullen knows the best diets allow for moderation. While she's figured out what works best for her, she still keeps in touch with the online community that helped get her there.
"You have to have a support group it's the most important part of your transformation," Pullen said.
Because even when you think you can't do it, other people do, and eventually, the feeling is contagious.
"It's something that clicks inside of you," she said. "You start to believe in yourself."

Soy protein concentrate can replace animal proteins in weanling pig diets – National Hog Farmer

Source: University of Illinois
Plant-derived proteins are less expensive than animal proteins if used in weanling pig diets, but may contain anti-nutritional factors that can negatively affect gut health and growth performance. However, results of a new study from the University of Illinois indicate that soy protein concentrate may be partly or fully substituted for animal proteins without adverse effects.
We determined digestibility of crude protein, amino acids and energy in SPC ground to three particle sizes, says U of I animal sciences professor Hans H. Stein. We also investigated the effects of substituting SPC for animal proteins on weanling growth performance.
Soy protein concentrate is derived from defatted soy flakes by removing soluble carbohydrates and some non-protein constituents. Three particle sizes 70, 180 and 700 micrometers were tested because earlier work showed that particle size of soybean meal affects digestibility of amino acids in weanling pigs.
In the groups first experiment, pigs were fed diets containing soybean meal, fish meal or SPC ground to one of the three particle sizes. Ileal digesta were collected and analyzed for amino acid and crude protein content.
Standardized ileal digestibility of crude protein was not different among the three diets containing SPC, but diets with SPC ground to 70 or 180 micrometers had greater crude protein digestibility than the traditional protein sources. The SID of several amino acids, including tryptophan, was also greater in diets containing SPC ground to 70 or 180 micrometers, compared with the other diets.
Stein explains that these results differed from similar studies using soybean meal, in which particle size had a greater influence on digestibility. It could be that alcohol extraction used in SPC processing improves digestibility, making it unnecessary to reduce particle size further to obtain the same results.
In a second experiment, weanling pigs were fed corn mixed with each of the protein sources used in the first experiment. The goal was to measure apparent total tract digestibility of gross energy and the digestible and metabolizable energy in each diet.
There were no differences in digestible and metabolizable energy among the three SPC particle sizes, but SPC ground to 180 micrometers contained more digestible energy than corn, soybean meal and fish meal, Stein says.
Finally, the researchers investigated the effects of SPC on growth performance and blood characteristics. In this experiment, pigs were fed combinations of fish meal, spray-dried protein plasma and SPC ground to 180 micrometers. The different diets did not change growth performance overall and no reduction in performance was observed if SPC was used instead of fish meal or spray-dried protein plasma.
Results of this experiment indicated that diets based on soybean meal and SPC can be fed to weanling pigs without negative effects on growth performance during the initial four weeks after weaning, Stein says. Altogether, results of the three experiments indicate that SPC ground to 180 micrometers may be used as an alternative to animal proteins in weanling pig diets.
The article, Nutritional value of soy protein concentrate ground to different particle sizes and fed to pigs,is published in Journal of Animal Science. The research was funded by Selecta.

Diet Doc Patients Avoid the Dangerous hCG Diet Plan and Lose Weight Fast With Doctor-Customized Diets – Marketwired (press release)

WESTON, WV--(Marketwired - April 11, 2017) - The hCG diet has been around for decades but is often misunderstood. Although quite effective in promoting rapid weight loss, it can be risky. The original hCG diet was developed by Dr. ATW Simeons in the early 1950s as a starvation-based diet that limited daily consumption to 500 calories. Dieters lost up to one pound per day by following an extremely low calorie diet and intaking small doses of hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin).
hCG is a hormone produced during pregnancy that contains 244 amino acids and has been linked to rapid weight loss by supposedly reducing "abnormal" fat from cells and around internal organs. When applied to a starvation diet like the original hCG diet, however, it can result in negative effects like extreme weakness, hair loss, and muscle decrease. Over time, the original hCG diet, also known as the Simeons method, became regarded as 'unsafe' by medical professionals, nutritionists, and leading weight loss centers like Diet Doc.
While the original hCG diet based on the Simeons method has been discredited, researchers have learned a lot about the hCG hormone and safer ways to apply it. Now, higher calorie programs for hCG treatment are available. These programs generally involve undergoing hCG treatment while consuming between 800 to 1250 calories every day. Individuals are able to lose weight consistently and the negative side effects seen with the Simeons method are minimized.
Diet Doc, a nationally recognized weight loss program, has continuously discouraged the Simeons method of hCG dieting and suggests high-calorie programs that involve safer weight loss. Doctor-supervision and diet customization based on nutritional needs are also highly recommended.
Regardless of their weight loss history or individual struggles, Diet Doc helps patients develop an individualized diet based on their nutritional needs or even their genetics. All Diet Doc programs, provide a doctor-supervised, customized diet plan.
