Finding fitness, serenity on a dragon boat – CNN

The crowd came from all walks of life. But they soon would be working in unison to paddle their boat across the water.

But today it's drawing thousands of Americans away from their smartphones and couches to get fit and feel a sense of camaraderie.

There are dragon boat clubs in dozens of US cities from Baltimore to Atlanta to Reno, Nevada.

A dragon boat is long (40 feet) and narrow (two paddlers across), which allows it to go very fast when everyone is in synch.

On race days, the boats sport colorful carved dragon heads and tails.

"You get people to give up of themselves for the purpose of trying to be a teammate," Eliscu says.

Melissa Romero is a customer sales and service agent at a resin company. It's a stressful job, but she finds relief in dragon boating.

"It's great for the heart rate because you're able to get that pumping and really move."

"The worries of the day just kind of melt away and you're thinking about being on the boat and contributing to the team. What's really nice about this sport, you don't have to be 100% in shape. I love being out in the open rather than being in a gym," Romero says.

She's been doing it for five years, racing throughout the year.

"I put together our team. We travel around Florida to race against teams from in state and out of state."

Romero says with dragon boating, the technique to help you move the water away from the boat is different from your general canoe stroke.

"When I first started I couldn't paddle more than five minutes at a time. Now I can probably do an hour continuous," Romero says with pride.

Retired Orlando police officer Willis Weaver savors being out on the water, in the elements and making new friends.

"A lot of times cops are in a closed society. You don't deal with a lot of people who aren't cops. So you come out here and you have people working in whatever jobs they work in. When you're out there it doesn't matter what you do. All that matters is that you get your stroke count right."

Weaver is also a colon cancer survivor who is working to stay healthy.

"The water smells good, it feels good even if it splashes up on you. It's kind of like a zen moment."

"A lot of people who have never done this before are really becoming competitive and putting a name out there for the sport," says Romero.

Business offers various exercise classes – Neosho Daily News

A new business has opened its doors and is offering a variety of exercise programs.

A new business has opened its doors and is offering a variety of exercise programs. High Point Studio, 421 Fairground Rd., Neosho, officially opened with a soft opening in October. "It was kind of like on a whim, Randy (my husband) was looking for office space, and what are we going to do with the rest of this space, and I said, 'I will take it," said Pam Cope, owner of High Point. "Basically I feel like the vision for this is to just like have it be a wellness center. I am offering one co-ed yoga class for men and women. But I would eventually like to get some wellness education training classes in here, really utilize this space for health and wellness - that is kind of my goal." High Point offers yoga, Zumba and pound classes. "I don't think that people understand the full benefits of yoga, as your body with aging and continuing working on your flexibility," she said. "Just like wakening up muscles, you don't even realize they are there that kind of lock up and freeze up. It is so beneficial for circulation, overall health...when you start seeing the true benefits of it (yoga), you get addicted. If you go a week without doing it, your body will start talking to you." Zumba is a combination of balance, cardio workout and a lot of movement, Cope noted. "We offer Zumba Gold, because that is offered for older americans," she said. "They do light hand weights, a lot of chair, so basically it is just keeping them in a safe place. There is all different levels of Zumba." And finally, the pound class is fairly new. "This workout was designed by two musicians and they use drum sticks. a 45 minute workout," said Cope. Since she opened, Cope said the feedback has been great. "Everybody that has come has loved it, they are super excited to have this place," she said. "Eventually I will add classes." For more information on pricing and class times, call 355-2085.

300 ROTC cadets converge on Fairfield for training exercises – Daily Herald

Cadets charged through the brush, aiming their weapons and yelling Bang! Bang! Bang! A few feet away, one of the enemies they downed leaned up just enough to take a bite out of a piece of pizza.

While Thursdays exercises were just training for Army ROTC cadets in Utah, the cadets were practicing skills theyll soon need. For the juniors, theyll have to demonstrate those skills this summer at an assessment camp.

This is a good stepping stone for all those cadets who are going there, said Maj. Toby Adamson, who is with Utah Valley Universitys Army ROTC program in Orem.

About 300 cadets from six Utah ROTC programs arrived in Fairfield on Thursday and will participate in the spring field training exercise. Its the largest exercise of its type in the state in recent years.

While there, the cadets camped outside and practiced land navigation, tactical training lanes, battle drills, combat first aid, shooting and a weapons familiarization course amidst a steady wind. The cadets, who woke up at 4 a.m. to start, blended into the hills and brush as they moved about their exercises Friday afternoon.

The cadets from the different programs were mixed up and divided into new groups to give them the experience of working with and learning from new teammates.

The event was organized by upperclassmen.

It is very much student run, said Tyler Meidell, a sophomore from BYU.

Hayden Schappell, a senior at BYU, coordinated with the other ROTC programs about organizing the exercises. He said the students are able to learn from other programs.

Everybody brings something different to the table, Schappell said.

Being one of the cadets who ran the exercises, he was able to see how crucial the leaders are to the other cadets.

Ive learned a lot about the importance of sustaining the efforts out there, he said.

One problem leadership had to fix early on was a group that used water faster than anticipated. The group ran out of water and it had to be replenished.

Schappell said the exercises boost the cadets confidence about their abilities.

Freshman Janae Hyde, a cadet who attends BYU, was able to watch the seniors plan, which gave her a new appreciation for what they do.

When youre out there, you dont realize how much work they put in, Hyde said.

For many of the students, the exercises introduced them to a new type of camping that required them to leave no trace that they were there.

A lot of this is new to college-age kids, Adamson said.

With seniors running the show, the ROTC instructors, or cadre, were able to watch the students demonstrate what theyve been taught.

They are doing extremely well, Adamson said.

Are Instagram Fitness Guides Too Good to Be True? – ATTN (blog)

Forty mountain climbers, 20 leg lifts, 20 toe touches, a 30-second plank, then repeat. That's just half ofDay One's workout requirementinfitness celebrityKayla Itsines' 12 weekcourse.

Itsines, a 25-year-old personal trainer from Adelaide, Australia, has taken Instagram by storm. She shares selfies of herself in workout gear and dramatic before and after photos of clients to show that her exercise program works.

Her social media presence has fueled a booming business. Itsinesoffers a 12 week program dubbed bikini body guide (or #bbg) andtakes clients through a daily 28 minute workout with a corresponding meal plan for $52.95. She also offers an app, Sweat, that takes users through a similar workout through a mobile version of #bbg that costs users $19.99 per month and offers snack suggestions such ashard-boiled eggs and cucumbers.

Itsines has the self-proclaimed largest female fitness community with 15 million followers, but she isnt the only one in the Instagram body guide game. Anna Victoria, creator of the Fit Body Guides, boasts 1.3 million followers on Instagram and offers a12-week diet and exercise program run for $79.95.

Itsines and Victoria each attempt to foster communities of body positivity. Itsines told the Cut that a bikini body is when you feel comfortable in a bikini. And Victoria has shared two side-by-side photos of herself to show how angles and lighting can make the same body look differently.

Still, the "after" photos of clients following the program tend tofeature women with defined abs, muscled thighs, and taut arms.

Theprograms stress that they are designed for women of all sizes and fitness abilities. But can a client really expect to see such a dramatic change in their body after a 12-week program?

Theres so many variables that could dictate differences in the types of changes that people see in their bodies, Jessica Matthews, a senior advisor on health and education for the American Council on Exercise, told ATTN:. It would be completely inappropriate and unprofessional for me to say, yes every single person who does this will see these results. Because thats not the case. Every body responds to exercise differently.

Matthews notes that these regimes hit many of the staples of an effective workout plan. They also meet the American College of Sports Medicines guidelines for time spent working out weekly, incorporatingresistance training, cardio-respiratory training and focus on all the major muscle groups.

But theres still some room for improvement. Matthews said she wishes the programs included warm-ups and offered more variations to accommodate a wider audience, like modifications to increase or decrease the difficulty of individual movements.

Karina Knight, a registered dietician and founder of the California Nutrition Group, told ATTN: that the food guides are plagued by the same problem.

Many of these generalized plans only include age, gender and physical activity, which is a good start, Knight said, but that ideally, [food guides] should be tailored for individual needs such as age, gender, physical activity, medical history, medications, and education.

Itsines meal plans are between 1,600 to 1,800 calories a day and feature lots of smoothies, low-fat cheese, and small portions of avocado.

From my experience, unless required for medical reasons, strict diets do not work, Knight said. People usually quit after 4-5 weeks and the main reasons are due to food cravings, unable to follow a strict diet in social situations, lack of time to prepare their own meals and most importantly, lack of family or social support.

However, it's quite possible that theInstagram community can create a version of thatsocial support network.

What I think these programs have done so well is theyve created communities around it, Matthews said.

Social support is a huge factor when it comes to the actual adoption and ultimately the adherence to a regular routine of physical activity.

Do not let the Easter bunny wreck your diet – Bangor Daily News

Ive been helping people lose weight for more than 20 years. In all of that time I have seen some weight loss mistakes being repeated over and over. One mistake in particular is failing to make a plan.

Holidays are a major cause of stress for many dieters.

There are known threats to diets. Some women have a monthly threat that their lack of planning sets their diets back a few days every time around that time of the month. Then there are the seasonal threats and the holiday threats that are equally predictable but for which too many dieters fail to make a plan.

Easter is coming. Its a threat and Ive already heard dieters say, Ill be fine. Ill just be careful.

This isnt a good plan. Its not a plan at all. Planning isnt difficult and the results are worth the time and effort. Rather than opening your eyes on Monday morning feeling bloated and full of regret, a little planning can turn that around. Instead of worrying about whether youll be able to get your control back, you can celebrate your Easter success.

Be prepared for your Easter gathering. This is not the day for leggings and a long tunic top or sweat pants. Wear something thats snug around the waist, not stretchy. Eat somefruit and vegetables before you go. Think of your stomach as a balloon 3/4 full of air. An empty belly (totally deflated balloon) makes it harder to practice flexible restraint.

1. Be very choosy about Easter candy.

2. If you will be in a situation where tension runs high with family members find ways to physically or mentally remove yourself.

3. When faced with the meal and the hors doeuvres pick carefully.

4. Avoid alcohol altogether or mix wine with sparkling water for a spritzer.

5. Move, move move!

6. Practice, practice, practice these tips by creating images in your head and watching yourself successfully perform the actions you will do to stay on track.

A well-formed plan is the best way to ensure you will great the scale with confidence after Easter.

Things dont always work out as planned. Your best shot of sticking to your plan is making it as specific and detailed as possible. Then reviewit in your head over and over and over. The more familiar you are with your plan the greater the chances it will become a reality.

If your best laid plans go awry, you didnt fail, you just need to adjust your plan so that it works the way you want it to work next time. Dont beat yourself up or start giving yourself negative self-talk, instead write the word Easter on a piece of toilet paper, flush it, and go on with your program as though Easter never happened. A little weight gain is not a setback or a roadblock, its just a detour.

WFP’s Nutrition Policy 2017-2021 – ReliefWeb

Executive Summary

This policy details how WFP can support governments in achieving their commitments to reducing malnutrition and reaching Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2, particularly target 2.2. As the world embarks on the path of sustainable development, WFP recognizes that good nutrition is both a critical input to and an outcome of the SDGs. With concurrent emergencies continuing around the world, humanitarian response will remain a priority in WFPs nutrition activities and will be essential to achieving the SDGs. Ensuring that nutrient needs are met before, during and after emergencies is central to WFPs work, as the changing nature and frequency of crises amplify already critical levels of malnutrition.

The policy builds on the good work started by the previous WFP nutrition policy and takes into account evaluation findings, new evidence and innovations from WFP programmes. It expands WFPs focus on preventing malnutrition to cover all forms of malnutrition including both undernutrition and overweight/obesity (Box 1) while reaffirming WFPs support to treatment of moderate acute malnutrition, which is a critical part of the continuum of care.

The policy is aligned with WFPs Integrated Road Map and reaffirms national governments as WFPs primary partners. At the country level, WFP coordinates with other United Nations agencies, using the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) or other mechanisms to support government-led strategies and programmes.

This policy commits WFP to increasing its focus on resilience-building and stunting prevention in longer-term humanitarian responses with national governments and other partners and aims to ensure that WFP applies a nutrition lens in all of its activities, identifying and leveraging opportunities to improve nutrition through its work. The policy aims to leverage WFPs support to reaching SDG 2 by ensuring the availability of, access to, demand for and consumption of diets that comprehensively meet but do not exceed the nutrient requirements of nutritionally vulnerable groups.

There is a clear need to accelerate reductions in malnutrition, which remains the underlying cause of 45 percent of deaths among children under 5 annually. Good nutrition matters throughout the life cycle, but is especially important during the first 1,000 days from conception to 2 years of age. Evidence shows that undernutrition during this period can have lasting impacts on a childs growth, learning and future productivity, leading to significant losses in national productivity and economic growth that are equivalent to 811 percent of gross domestic product. Such chronic undernutrition can lead to stunting, increasing the risk of non-communicable diseases later in life.

Worldwide, approximately 2 billion people suffer from micronutrient deficiencies, 51 million children under 5 are wasted, 159 million are stunted and 43 million are overweight. This burden of malnutrition is reflected in sub-optimal physical development and health among populations, which undermines the social and economic development of countries.

Ten evidence-based, nutrition-specific interventions have been identified, which if brought to scale would decrease child deaths by 15 percent and stunting by 20 percent.1 Continued focus on nutrition-specific interventions, particularly those that prevent malnutrition, is necessary, but nutrition-sensitive approaches are also essential in accelerating progress towards ending malnutrition in all its forms. With its strong operational and technical skills, WFP will build on its broad-ranging experience of nutrition in changing contexts, to support direct implementation and provide governments with technical assistance in improving analysis, targeting, modality selection, delivery and monitoring for nutrition interventions based on its complementary strengths.

In its enhanced engagement in nutrition, WFP will prioritize support to vulnerable groups to increase their access to and consumption of adequate and diverse diets, using gender-sensitive nutrition analysis as the base for gender-transformative nutrition programming in line with the WFP Gender Policy.

Combining approaches for improving gender equality and womens empowerment (GEWE) with nutrition programming has the potential to produce mutually reinforcing results for both GEWE and nutrition. Availability of, access to and demand for nutritious food are fundamental in supporting good nutrition, eliminating poverty and achieving the SDGs for inclusive economic growth, health and education. They require moving beyond the focus on quantity calories and increasing attention to quality nutrients.

A world free from malnutrition can only be attained through government-led, multi-partner and multi-sector efforts involving United Nations agencies, civil society, international organizations, foundations, academia and the private sector. WFP commits to working as a global advocate, and at the regional and country levels, to support programmes and enhance national capacities for overcoming constraints on availability of, access to, demand for and consumption of the safe, healthy and adequate diets needed to end malnutrition in all its forms by 2030.2 Coordinated partnerships are a cornerstone of WFPs engagement in nutrition. Addressing the complex drivers of malnutrition requires collaboration among diverse sectors and stakeholders and intensified work to scale up nutrition-specific and -sensitive programmes at the country level. With partners, WFP has committed to incorporating nutrition components into appropriate programmes for which nutrition is not a primary objective, and to linking vulnerable groups to these components where possible.

The 2012 Nutrition Policy provided the foundation for WFPs approach to nutrition by emphasizing how a combination of nutrition-specific and -sensitive interventions could be used to address malnutrition. This entails a context-specific focus on supporting women, men, girls and boys in consuming healthy diets, balancing immediate needs with long-term approaches to strengthen local food and social protection systems. The Nutrition Policy significantly enhances WFPs work by aligning it with the 2030 Agenda, building on WFPs current approach based on the latest thinking and evidence, and diversifying the means of supporting countries in achieving their nutrition-related goals.

Mama June Talks Weight-Loss Surgery With Dr. Oz: ‘You Have to Put Work Into It’ – Yahoo Health

From Dr. Oz The Good Life

Reality TV star Mama June Shannon has been making headline after headline since revealing her nearly 300-pound weight loss earlier this week. And her transformation (which was documented on the WeTV reality show "Mama June: From Not to Hot") really was incredible: She dropped from a size 28 to a size 4, and even revealed that she's now able to wear some of the clothes that belong to her 11-year-old daughter, Alana "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson.

But along with all the praise and recognition she's received for her transformation, Shannon has also received some hate - including criticism from people who question whether she took the "easy way out" by opting for surgery, instead of relying solely on changes to her diet and exercise routines to lose weight.

That's why, during an appearance on "The Dr. Oz Show" on Thursday, Shannon opened up about the misconceptions surrounding weight-loss surgery.

"I tell people it's a daily struggle," Shannon explained to Dr. Oz. "I've had the gastric sleeve. I've had the skin removal surgery. But people think, Oh, that's just a fix."

And Shannon's right! Yes, the gastric sleeve and skin removal surgeries Shannon underwent can help speed up the process of weight loss, and yes, they are pretty darn pricey, which means they're not readily available to everyone. But there are a number of health risks posed by the surgeries - and it takes some serious commitment for a bariatric surgery patient to maintain their new figure, according to Mayo Clinic.

Read: It's still necessary for a person who has undergone bariatric surgery to make some major lifestyle changes (including permanent healthy changes to their diet and exercise routine) if they want to maintain their weight loss long-term.

"Trust me, it's work," Shannon said to Dr. Oz. "You have to put the work into it, because if you don't, there's no sense in spending the money and having the stuff done."

Here's hoping Mama June can keep up the good work and maintain her dramatic weight loss - and maybe even pass along her new healthy habits to her kids.
