Two high school seniors are behind Delray new outdoor fitness center – MyPalmBeachPost

DELRAY BEACH
Atlantic High School seniors Christelle Singh and Talia Vessal wanted to leave their mark on Delray Beach before heading to college.
If you call redesigning a Delray Beach parks leaving a mark, theyve done it.
The city on Tuesday agreed to invest $51,000 in an outdoor fitness center designed by Singh and Vessal and planned for Delrays Barwick Park, on the corner or Lake Ida and Barwick roads and surrounded by homes.

The teens are students at Atlantic High Schools International Baccalaureate engineering program, and built three-dimensional schematics for the outdoor fitness center as part of their senior project.
Weve been working on this nonstop for the past year, and were so excited, Vessal said Tuesday. So many people can say they wanted to do something or tried to do something, but how many can say they actually did it?
And not many can say they did it in high school.
Shortly after developing the Barwick Park fitness center schematics for class, Vessal and Singh pitched it to the citys parks and recreation department in August.
The parks department liked it, but needed funding.
They have been working tirelessly for this, said Suzanne Fischer, who heads the parks department.
The $51,000 in city funding is bolstered by $48,000 in donations from residents and local businesses, including donations from two Boca Raton-based communication-tower firms: Vertical Bridges, which donated $25,000, and Phoenix Towers International, which gave $10,000.
More than $2,000 was donated through a GoFundMe page created by the teens.
Barwick Park has two playgrounds, a quarter-mile trail for walking or biking and acres of flat green space. The girls want to place outdoor fitness equipment that would be accessible to passersbys.
They designed the fitness equipment and center layout with outdoor equipment company GameTime, then sought out donations to self-fund the project.
Vessal and Singhs goal was to build the outdoor fitness center before they graduated high school. Vessal plans to study civil engineering at the University of Central Florida and Singh plans to study engineering, but hasnt decided on a school yet.
I think until we see it in person, it will always feel unreal, Singh said.
Mayor Cary Glickstein praised the teens for their efforts.
Its nice to hear the public responded the way they did, he told the teens Tuesday. Well done.

10 reasons you can’t lose the baby weight | Fox News

If youre a new mom, you might be counting down the days when you can trade in your maternity pants for your favorite pair of skinny jeans.
Yet experts say just as it took you nine months to put on the weight, losing it can take several months or more. If the weight isnt coming off as fast as you want it to or your weight loss has stalled, there are several factors that could be hindering your efforts. Here are 10.
1. You weighed too much before or during pregnancy More than 50 percent of women are overweight or obese when they get pregnant, and only about a third gain the recommended amount of weight during pregnancy, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
If you became pregnant while you were overweight or if you gained more than you should have, it can make it that much more challenging to lose the weight. In fact, women who gain more than the recommended amount of weight during pregnancy are more likely to keep the weight on even up to 15 years postpartum, a meta-analysis in the journal Nutrition Reviews found.
Although you cant go back in time, its important to recognize that it could take you longer.
HOW TAKING A HOT BATH COULD HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT
2. Youre not getting enough sleep Sleep is hard to come by with a new baby, but when you are sleep-deprived, the hormones that affect appetite are unbalanced. In fact, people who slept for only four hours ate more calories the following day than when they had enough sleep, a study presented at the American Heart Associations scientific sessions in 2011 found.
Sleep deprivation causes your body to up its production of ghrelin, which increases hunger, and slow down its production of leptin, which regulates appetite.
If your partner can take a feeding at night or you can catch a nap during the day, it can help you get the rest you need.
Also, eating at the exact same time every day will regulate your hormones and your appetite. Although your babys sleep schedule is inconsistent, you can actually train your body to maintain a consistent schedule, Dr. Susan Albers, a clinical psychologist at the Cleveland Clinic and a New York Times bestselling author of 50 More Ways To Soothe Yourself Without Food, told Fox News.
3. Youre not being patient enough Trying to stack up to those celebrities who are back in their bikinis two weeks after giving birth isnt healthy. The time it takes to lose the baby weight is different for each woman, but it will take at least six months, if not more, Angela Ginn-Meadow, a registered dietitian nutritionist in Baltimore, Maryland, and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, told Fox News.
Dont beat yourself up, but do make sure your diet and exercise habits are consistent and realistic for your life.
It might not happen overnight, but small, simple steps to getting back will be key, Ginn-Meadow said.
If you think youve been doing everything right but your weight loss has stalled, seek advice from a registered dietitian nutritionist, who may be able to help.
6 THINGS YOU SHOULD NEVER SAY TO SOMEONE TRYING TO LOSE WEIGHT
4. Youre skipping meals Between feedings, diaper changes and an unpredictable schedule, making time to sit down to a meal can feel like an afterthought. Yet if you dont make regular meals a priority, youll feel irritable and more likely to eat more at the next meal. In fact, fasting is linked to abdominal weight gain and may increase your risk for type-2 diabetes, a study out of The Ohio State University suggests.
5. Youre hitting the gym too hard You might think it will take hours at the gym to lose the baby weight, but thats not the case. In fact, doing too much too fast can put you at risk for injury, pelvic organ prolapse a condition that causes the pelvic organs such as the bladder or uterus to bulge out of the vagina, and even halt your weight loss efforts.
A lot of cardio also stimulates your appetite to increase to match it and sometimes to exceed it, Leah Keller, a pre- and post-natal fitness expert in San Francisco, California, and creator of The Dia Method, a prenatal and postnatal fitness program, told Fox News.
Instead of pushing yourself to do a HIIT class when you get the all-clear to exercise again, resistance training that targets the major muscle groups is the most effective way to torch calories. Aim for 25 minutes, twice a week.
Cardio isnt off limits, but make sure its low impact especially when you start to exercise again. Then as you feel stronger, you can move onto intervals on the elliptical or bike. As you push the heart rate up and down, you get more benefit long-term both for your cardiovascular fitness and calorie burn, Keller said.
MULTITASKING MOM BREAST-FEEDS WHILE SHE WORKS OUT
6. You have a thyroid issue Up to 30 percent of postpartum women likely have thyroid dysfunction due to an iodine deficiency, Dr. Prudence Hall, founder of The Hall Center in Santa Monica, California, told Fox News.
During pregnancy, your baby takes iodine from you, which in turn can cause hypothyroidism, a disorder whereby the thyroid gland doesnt make enough thyroid hormone. After you give birth, symptoms like fatigue, depression and weight gain can show up.
If you suspect that you have a problem with your thyroid, ask your doctor to run a comprehensive thyroid panel, which includes TSH, free T3, free T4, and reverse T3 and the thyroid antibodies. If the test determines there is an issue, your doctor may prescribe iodine and a thyroid medication. Theres also some evidence of women reversing their thyroid problems through diet.
7. Youre eating the wrong foods To lose weight, you need to eat meals that regulate your blood sugar and keep you feeling satiated. Make sure you eat plenty of vegetables, lean protein and healthy fats throughout the day to fill you up, but be sure to keep empty calories to a minimum.
We all love treats, we all love indulgent foods. But those occasional foods really need to be once or twice a week they dont need to be a habit, Ginn-Meadow said.
5 CRAZY NEW WAYS TO LOSE WEIGHT
8. Youre snacking at night You might get a hankering for a snack after your babys middle of the night feeding, but those extra calories can add up. Instead, drink a cup of chamomile or cinnamon tea, which studies suggest may lower blood sugar in people with diabetes.
9. You have a leaky gut Breastfeeding causes low levels of estrogen, which surprisingly can affect the GI tract and lead to intestinal hyperpermeability, or leaky gut syndrome. Leaky gut syndrome occurs when tight junctions that line the inside of the intestines open and allow undigested food particles and pathogens through. Research suggests that this increased permeability in the gut is linked to increased visceral, or deep, fat.
When the GI tract goes out and doesnt digest food as well, thats a major cause for weight gain, Hall said.
To boost your gut health and lose weight, try probiotics, along with digestive enzymes, eliminate gluten, minimize dairy and of course, eat a healthy diet, she said.

10. Youre eating your feelings When youre sleep deprived and feel overwhelmed and stressed out, its common to rummage through the pantry for something to make yourself feel better. Yet if you dont break that habit, it can prevent you from losing weight.
Instead of turning to food to feel better, have a list of healthy activities you can do when youre trying to cope with your feelings.
That might include putting your baby in the stroller and taking a brisk walk, signing up for a mommy and me Yoga class, journaling, or simply escaping to the bathroom to take a few deep breaths for a moment of peace. Five minutes away of [or] getting a few moments to yourself can [be] so refreshing, Albers said.

How To Lose Weight With Hypothyroidism – The Good Men Project (blog)

Losing weight and keeping it off can be a struggle. Especially if you have an underactive thyroid. Your metabolism has slowed down and youre almost always feeling tired.
In this video were looking at 4 steps required to successfully lose weight with hypothyroidism. . .
If your medication is not helping to correct thyroid hormone levels, as well as relieve symptoms, then weight loss goes from difficult to impossible.
Consult your prescribing physician to help determine what type of medication is better for you, and also find the optimal dose required. While Levothyroxine is on average more effective, dessicated thyroid is a useful alternative that is reportedly much better tolerated.
There is no difference between taking your thyroid hormone meds in the morning vs evening. Choose whatever is easier for you to have it on a fasting stomach.
I need to begin with this clarification: Carbohydrates are not inherently bad for you. That is, they do not make you fat or sick on their own. That said, carbs in the form of added sugars and highly refined starches are unhealthy and unnecessary. They offer almost zero nutritional benefit and make up a large portion of the excess calories we consume.
Cutting back on added sugar is the most simple and direct way to cut out excess empty calories.
This is done by limiting intake of junk foods, flavoured drinks, alcohol, white bread, most cereals, and a good portion of packaged food in your supermarkets health food aisle.
Now its unrealistic (and unfair) to expect yourself to completely avoid added sugar every day of the year. But you need to begin taking actionable steps that help you cut back and form healthier habits.
Start by not having junk foods at home, or at least keep them out of sight in a cupboard you never use.
>
If you want to lose weight with an underactive thyroid, veggies and a source of protein should be the foundation of almost every meal you make, and plated first when serving.
The main benefit of protein is that its much more satiating than both fat and carbs.
That means it has a unique ability to reduce appetite and therefore your overall caloric intake too.
STUDY http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/88, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15 Studies show high protein diets may also reduce obsessive thoughts about food by 60% and cut desire for late-night snacks by half (3, 4).
Foods high in protein include meat, seafood, eggs, nuts, legumes (beans) and dairy. Protein is also the muscle-building nutrient, so a high protein diet complements regular exercise.
Nutrient-dense meals are even more important for those with hypothyroidism and other autoimmune diseases, where nutrient absorption and deficiency are more common.
Emphasis goes to green leafy vegetables, mushrooms, and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage.
As a general guide, the protein portion of your meal should be the size of your palm, and salad/vegetables the size of your hand. This would leave about 1/4 or less of your plate for healthy carbs if you so choose (such as rice or potato).
Selenium and zinc are two critical nutrients directly involved in thyroid function and metabolism.
Selenium is an essential mineral that helps the body to recycle iodine. Thats the reason the thyroid has the highest selenium content (per gram of tissue) of all our organs.
Its thought that low selenium levels contribute to hypothyroidism through alternate mechanisms related to iodine.
For this reason, its fundamental to eat a diet that contains many selenium-rich foods, such as:
Brazil nuts Tuna and sardines Beef and chicken Eggs Legumes
Zinc is an essential mineral required to regulate TSH, which is a hormone from the brain that controls how much thyroid hormone your thyroid produces.
In fact, the metabolism of zinc and thyroid hormones are closely interlinked, which is why a deficiency can lead to alopecia (hair loss).
While zinc deficiency is very uncommon in the developed world, its still recommended to eat a variety of zinc-rich foods (8). This includes: Oysters and shellfish Beef and chicken Legumes, nuts, and seeds Milk and yoghurt.
Okay, so I hope you found those 4 tips useful In all honesty, Ive only JUST scratched the surface, here, there are certainly more steps to follow on after these ones. To find out more you can click the link in the description or on the youtube card where Ive written about hypothyroidism and much more detail.

How these 2 sisters lost 245 pounds, combined – Today.com

These sisters take sibling rivalry to the next level: They recently competed to lose weight, and wound up dropping 245 pounds together while drastically changing their relationships with food.
It wasnt as difficult as I thought. Basically, you just took everything momma told you all your life and do it, Jacquee Broaddus, who lost 80 pounds, told TODAY.
Her sister, Jessee Baldwin, who lost 165 pounds, agreed.
The changes I have found have a lot to do with realizing I am worth something. I am worth saving, said Baldwin.
While the sisters gained the weight in different ways, they lost it by doing the same thing.
Broaddus, 36, was thin most of her life and enjoyed a diet that included cheese fries and nachos. She was slightly overweight when she got married, but didnt feel too unhealthy.
After having six children, she failed to lose the baby weight and at 5 feet 7 inches tall, she weighed 228 pounds.
When Jacquee Broaddus saw that her sister was successfully losing weight, she and her husband started watching what they ate and lost weight, too.

Those cheese fries caught up to me and I just couldnt eat whatever I wanted whenever I wanted anymore. But I just never changed my eating habits, she said.
Her sisters story is a little different. She remembers weighing 200 pounds in third grade. Even though she played volleyball, basketball and softball in high school, and basketball in college, she weighed about 300 pounds.
Jessee Baldwin was overweight since she was in third grade, but she's dropped 165 pounds in the last two years.

I cant even imagine how big I would have been if I didnt play sports, she said. I was huge and very uncomfortable running up and down the court.
She tried everything from a lemon juice and maple syrup cleanse to the cabbage soup diet. At her heaviest, Baldwin, 38, weighed 370 pounds. But it was a late night chat with her then 5-year-old daughter that encouraged Baldwin to make a change. At 11 p.m., she heard Katie crying. When Baldwin asked Katie what was wrong, she said:
Mommy, youre not healthy and Im scared."
After that night in 2015, Baldwin called a health coach to lose weight. She followed a meal plan, which included meal replacements (like shakes or bars) or meals every two to three hours. After she lost some weight, she switched to eating all meals that were low-carb, high-protein and loaded with veggies.
We follow and create healthy habits. People can pretty much lose weight with any program out there, but if you dont change your relationship with food, if you dont create healthy habits, it will never last, Baldwin said.
In a year, Jacquee and Chuck Broaddus both lost weight, with Jacquee losing 80 pounds and Chuck dropping 110.

After she lost some weight, she visited her sister, who lives outside of Houston, Texas. When Broaddus saw that her older sister was slimming down, the sibling rivalry kicked in and she told Baldwin:
My goodness, youre getting smaller than me. That cant happen.
Baldwin, who lives in Redding, California, had just started working as a health coach and was looking for her first client. Broaddus was still nursing so she wasnt sure if she could cut too many calories, but her husband, Chuck, 46, volunteered to be first. Within six months, he lost 100 pounds. The 5-foot-8-inch man dropped another 10 pounds and has maintained his 170-pound weight since the middle of 2016. At the same time, Broaddus followed the same diet without the meal replacements and lost 80 pounds.
I guess it kind of took my sister to kick me in the rear, Broaddus said.
The 5-foot-10-inch Baldwin is down to 205 pounds and plans to lose more and maintain a healthy lifestyle. The sisters provided this advice to help others interested in losing weight:
Baldwin encourages people to get seven to eight hours of sleep a night and drink half their body weight in ounces of water. Creating many healthy habits makes it easier for people to stick with healthy eating.
In only two years, Jessee Baldwin lost 165 pounds and hopes to lose more.
When Broaddus nursed her children, she craved sugary foods and ate candy bars to satiate that desire. But Baldwin recommended she try something new: When a craving strikes, drink a glass of water. If your body still craves food after the water, then eat the candy bar. But Broaddus found that most of the time, she wasnt hungry.
I dont need it. I just wanted it because its there, said Broaddus. I was eating mainly out of boredom.
Losing weight takes a lot of hard work and the more you have to lose, the harder you have to work. Thats why Broaddus advises others to begin now.
Dont wait until you are well over 200 pounds. Start today, said Broaddus.

Simonson: Dieting sucks – La Crosse Tribune

The last few weeks, I have been noticing the bulge. My shirts dont fit well anymore and I have really been thinking about cutting back on the food and being more active.
The problem, I love food. Just like most people that have weight issues, I cannot say no to food. The last few weeks, I have told myself nearly every day that I need to start thinking about losing weight. Then, I remember that I have a raspberry cream cheese pie in the fridge.
This pie is pretty amazing. It has a graham cracker crust, a gooey cream cheese center and a raspberry gelatin top. To top it all off, it is covered with whipped cream. Steph doesnt like anything that tastes like raspberry, so this pie has been all mine. Ive been quickly devouring it every night before bed.
There are specific foods in my life that bring me over to the dark side. Simple things like desserts with raspberry, macaroni and cheese and Dr. Pepper. I am currently kicking the Dr. Pepper, but everything else has been fair game.
All of these temptations are what makes dieting suck. The worst part about it, it seems like everyone else is trying to foil your plans. When I was in college, I was holding pretty strong on my diet for about four months. One weekend when I came home, I actually had to argue with family so I didnt have to eat a piece of banana bread.
I have to admit, it was really hard to do.
I also hate all of the vegetables you have to eat, all of the workouts and all of the preparation it requires.
Behind all of these excuses is stress. I have a little birdy telling me that my life is already too stressful to add all of these new things on top of it. On top of that, I eat whenever I am stressed. In my mind, I think I deserve this piece of pie at the end of the day for what I have went through.
Ive begun to wonder if the stress in our lives is why diets dont work. Instead of dealing with what is stressing me out, I decide to pull out that pie, grab a blanket and watch one of my favorite TV shows.
When I look back on my life and I actually handled my stress, that is when I lost the weight. That is when I actually was able to focus on myself instead of focusing on what will numb my mind from everything going on in my life.
Now, lets face it, stress is a hard thing to get rid of. That is why I am encouraging you, and myself, to work slowly at this. Dont just think you are going to get rid of it all right away. We as Americans are naturally stressed out because that is who we are.
You need to make a goal right now that will de-stress your life. One of the things that stresses me out is paperwork and filing things. I hate when it sits out, but I also hate when I have to file it. So, this week I am going to make a plan and get rid of the paperwork, while also making filing easier.
I dont know what I will do next, but whatever it is will be a baby step towards less stress.
I dont know about you, but I am tired of dieting. What I really want to do is work on de-stressing my life, because that is what is going to get my mind ready to devote time to making real changes in my eating habits. Maybe then I will have the will power to go out for a walk or eat on-the-go less.
I can tell you one thing, right now I am just too stressed to even think about it.

Peer Presser: Tips for maintaining good personal health as a busy college student – The Record

This is the first installment of Peer Presser, a weekly advice column aiming to offer valuable insights to students, from students. Each Peer Presser features an upperclassman in a different major sharing basic knowledge they've gained in their studies applicable to any college student's daily life.
Balancing school, work and a social lifeoften results in neglected personal health for many college students. Proper nutrition and exercise is all too often ignored by students with a busy schedule.
Andrew Spiessis an assistant trainer to Buffalo States football team and assists training a high school hockey team. He intensely researches nutrition for his own health.
Alexander Field/The Record Andrew Spiess is a senior business major and exercise science minor.
Theres a lot of false information out there, Spiess said in regard to health and dieting.
Many blogs have incorrect information, diets that dont work for everyone, or are even just advertisements to getyou to buy something.
You cant come up with one simple solution; it doesnt exist, Spiesssaid.
A large issue with unhealthy eating is the tendency to choose grab-n-go meal bars and the like.
Whole, basic foods are essential. Choosing an option with minimal ingredients and processing is generally abetter idea.
Dont get too complicated with it, Spiess said.
So rather than resorting to a meal bar, have a salad or make eggs, eat an apple.A balanced diet means something different for everyone, but all humansrequire the same type of fuel to function.
Vegetables are great for you (mom was right), fruits contain a lot of sugar, although its natural, and the need for breads isstill up in the air, according to health experts.
Its such a new field of study that there is no determination on it, Spiess said about thenecessity of breads and pastas.
The recent rise in popularity of organic products is also a gray area, because organic and natural are very vague descriptions.
As college student, he prefers the more cost-effective option when buying produce.
What you ingestdirectly affects your output.
A lot of people, especially here [Buff State], are just sitting for hours at a time in class, or just doing their work, and its not good at all,Spiess said.
Sitting for too long can lead to many health issues and diseases.Make the time to go to the fitness center or even just take a walk.
If you want to multitask, take some of your work to the gym and do it on the bike, or listen to something that you can learn something from while youre exercising,Spiess advised.
Make sure to only multitask during simple exercises, so you dont get hurt, and dont lack focus on your schoolwork.
All you need to keep yourself healthy is some cardio, be it running, biking, etc., and a little strength, which can be body-weight.
A gym or workout equipment isnt needed to stay healthy, so dontmake excuses.
And recoverys a big thing, too. A lot of people dont recover,Spiess warned.
Recovery includes eating well after a workout and resting your muscles so as to not overwork them.
Measuring your heart rate tracks the intensity of your workout, which determines how much rest youll need in between sets and after.
There are different kinds of stretches, Spiesssaid.
Start a workout with dynamic moving stretches, and end it with static holding stretches.
You dont want to do a full split after never doing a full split, Spiess said, laughing.
Maintaining good posture is important in and out of the gym, and if youre less active, ease into a regimen.
Just keep moving, Spiess concluded.
