‘A new way of life’ – The Daily Progress

Culpeper resident Paul Flynn, Jr. lost 266 pounds because he wanted to be able to get on the floor to play with his granddaughter.

It took him more than three years, but the 61-year-old auto technician vows to keep it off for good.

At his heaviest in January 2014, Flynn weighed 427 pounds, and had been battling obesity for 15 years. He had diabetes, high blood pressure and hypertension in addition to a bad back and knees. Flynn admitted he was working too much and not taking care of himself.

I was working two jobs, eating fast food in between and sleeping two or three hours a day, he said. It didnt take long to pack on the pounds. You ache all over. I lost two jobs because I weighed too much.

Flynn, originally of Falls Church, actively played in two softball leagues as a younger man when weight was not an issue. But then he and his wife, Coleen, started a family and his personal fitness took a back seat.

He wasnt happy and he was very short a lot of the times, said Coleen Flynn. His quality of life was deteriorating.

While taking a class for a state inspection license, Pauls legs collapsed beneath him.

To try hold himself up, he grabbed a bar above him and when he did, he pulled his arm out of the socket and dislocated his shoulder, said his wife.

Doctors could not repair the injury and he had to go out on disability.

Tired of feeling bad all the time, Flynn decided to undergo gastric bypass surgery at the University of Virginia Medical Center, but before he could get the procedure, he had to lose weight on his own.

At the encouragement of friends, he signed up for the local chapter of Take Pounds Off Sensibly (TOPS), which has met for decades every Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at Precious Blood Catholic Church with weigh-in at 5 p.m.

I kept thinking to myself what good is this going to do me? I didnt understand, but the more you listen the more the meetings started to help, Flynn said. I stopped eating fast food and Cokes that was the biggest thing.

Within three months, he had dropped 30 pounds. By September 2014, he was 60 pounds lighter and ready for surgery. Flynn spent a week in the hospital recovering.

It was torture, said his wife of 38 years, Coleen. He regretted doing the surgery that first week. But once he healed, the weight started coming off very quickly.

Gastric bypass and other weight-loss surgeries make changes to a persons digestive system to help them lose weight by limiting how much you they can eat or by reducing the absorption of nutrients, or both, according to the Mayo Clinic. After surgery, recipients must follow strict diets and consume less food that their now-smaller stomach can comfortably and safely digest.

Flynn with buy-in from his wife had to completely change the way he ate with most meals prepared at home. The first few months after surgery all he could eat was pureed food. His diet these days consists of lean meats, yogurt, fruit, vegetables and diminished portions.

We cut our food in half and use a small plate, Coleen said.

Added Paul, Its not a quick fix. You got to follow a plan.

That plan includes weekly support sessions at TOPS.

The doctor told him he needed an accountability partner, Coleen said. Something to help keep him motivated.

She went with him from the start and the couple still attends the Tuesday gatherings. Coleen started to lose weight, too 60 pounds altogether.

They are so positive and encouraging, she said. They helped keep us motivated by knowing we had to weigh in every week.

Through his multi-year journey with TOPS, Paul has won various awards for his drastic weight loss, including last year, when he received a trip to Disney World for his accomplishment. More recently, he was named the Virginia Division Winner.

Barbara Cady, president of TOPS Club, Inc., based in Milwaukee, said the Flynns are an outstanding example of the importance of support in the weight loss journey.

This includes accountability at weekly weigh-ins, discussion of successes and challenges and solid educational information on healthy living, she said. It has been a privilege to watch Pauls steady loss.

Having a supportive life partner is also crucial, Cady said, noting that Paul and Coleen regularly encourage each other.

Their TOPS friends cheer them forward. Together, all of us are getting healthier, she said.

Paul said he doesnt miss the fast food. He doesnt miss the diabetes or hypertension either that is all under control now that the weight is gone. As of last week, he weighed 161 pounds and was looking to gain about 10. Hes gone from a size 60 pants to a size 36.

Being able to play with his granddaughter has made the struggle more than worth it.

They have those little tunnels you crawl through, of course I couldnt fit my big butt through there, but now I can climb right on through the tunnel with her, he said. It was a big motivation, oh, my gosh, yes, and now I got a grandson. I love the heck out of them.

Losing more than half your body weight is not easy, Paul emphasized. It takes a lot of hard work.

I would recommend it to anybody, but its a new way of life, he said.

Diet Doc Discourages Fad Diets and Promotes ‘Healthy Eating’ Through Doctor-Supervised Ketogenic Diet Plan – Marketwired (press release)

SALT LAKE CITY, UT--(Marketwired - April 03, 2017) - Many individuals follow a strict diet regimen to balance their weight and prevent weight gain in the long run. Some dieters, however, are simply searching for a quick solution to achieve the perfect 'summer body'. Fad diets seem to offer temporary solutions but can often be unhealthy as they are often starvation-based and potentially dangerous. A better option is to follow a healthy eating plan with nutrients that benefit the body without exceeding daily calorie intake goals. A healthy eating plan can be customized to an individual's dietary needs but often involves the following:

The Keto Diet, or the Ketogenic Diet, is one example of a healthy diet that promotes weight loss by modifying the body's utilization of the energy from food. It involves high levels of fat, moderate amounts of protein, and low amounts of carbohydrates. Generally, the human body burns carbohydrates before fats for energy; the ketogenic diet removes carbohydrates from the diet for bit so the body is forced to burn stored fat.

If not managed properly, the Keto Diet, like any other diet, can be unhealthy or even dangerous. Although ketone bodies are a sign of weight loss with the Keto Diet, they can also be a warning sign of serious issues like diabetes. Therefore, it is important for a medical professional to supervise any major dieting endeavor. At Diet Doc, a nationally recognized weight loss center, the unique dietary needs of each individual are considered in order to maximize efficient, safe, and long-term weight loss.

All Diet Doc patients receive custom-designed weight loss programs and diet consulting. With a safe, doctor-supervised diet plan and guidance for life, Diet Doc patients gain the following benefits within the very first month:

3 Hot Health & Fitness Stocks for 2017 – Motley Fool

Health and fitness is big business in the U.S., and companies who take advantage of that trend have started to become big winners for investors. Healthy foods, health clubs, and weight-loss programs have all been growing over the past decade and show no signs of stopping.

In 2017, National Beverage Corp. (NASDAQ:FIZZ), NutriSystem Inc. (NASDAQ:NTRI), and Weight Watchers International, Inc. (NYSE:WTW) have all risen sharply, and with market trends at their backs, they look to have bright futures.

FIZZ data by YCharts.

I have to admit that I'm one of the people who helped drive National Beverage's revenue 20% higher, to $194.6 million in the most recent quarter, and helped double net income to $24.3 million. In particular, LaCroix is the fastest growing sparkling water brand, according to industry data, and high prices on health products are driving strong operating margins of 18.2% last quarter.

National Beverage has essentially filled the role in the health market that Pepsi or Coca-Cola filled in the fast-food or soda market. It's a well-known brand that has, in many ways, replaced these everyday sugary drinks for consumers. And with the health trend only gaining steam, I think the stock has a bright future.

NutriSystem and Weight Watchers are also surging on the market, primarily because they're gaining a lot of traction in their businesses. Nutrisystem's 2016 revenue jumped 18% versus a year ago, to $545.5 million, and diluted income per share jumped 34% to $1.19.

Weight Watchers' 2016 revenue was up a more modest 1.3% to $949.1 million, but net income more than doubled to $67.6 million, and earnings per share hit $1.03.

The number of customers for both companies are growing as the interest in a healthy lifestyle increases. And as they adapt and innovate new products, NutriSystem and Weight Watchers are set up to continue riding the health trend.

In the last decade, there's been a big move by consumers to healthier eating and fitness habits. There's been the growth of healthier grocery stores like Whole Foods and the decline of fast food in favor of concepts like Chipotle and Panera Bread. Even fitness clubs like Lifetime Fitness and yoga brands like Lululemon have been able to ride this wave over a long period of time.

Right now, the market loves the growth being experienced in weight loss and flavored water, and that's why National Beverage, Nutrisystem, and Weight Watchers are three of the best-performing stocks on the market in 2017. And if growth continues, their stocks may not be done moving higher.

John Mackey, CEO of Whole Foods Market, is a member of The Motley Fool's board of directors. Travis Hoium has no position in any stocks mentioned. The Motley Fool owns shares of and recommends Chipotle Mexican Grill, Lululemon Athletica, Panera Bread, and Whole Foods Market. The Motley Fool has a disclosure policy.

Tracktown Fitness participants are revving up for spring road races – The Register-Guard

Grace Miller, 12, is training for her third 5K race. On Sunday mornings, she rises just after the sun and heads to Hayward Field to run with her dad.

Colleen Milliman, 90, also trains at Hayward on Sunday mornings, toward her own goal: She wants to set a running record for 90-year-olds. TrackTown USA holds a free weekly track workout from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. each Sunday at Hayward field. The event, TrackTown Fitness, is open to anyone regardless of age, skill set or motivation.

Who brought the sun? coach Vin Lananna jokes during his pre-workout pep talk at Sundays meet-up.

The sky is uncharacteristically clear, and families and friends run side by side, laughing and smiling through their exertions.

Lananna, a former University of Oregon track coach and mens coach of the 2016 U.S. Olympic track team, runs the weekly sessions with Ian Dobson, who competed at 5,000 meters in the 2008 Summer Olympics.

We started the program because we have this great community of people who give so much to track and field, Lananna said. Its a community builder. I think all sports especially collegiate sports are community builders.

Citizen running programs organized by UO track coaches and athletes date to legendary UO track coach Bill Bowerman, whose early jogging club in Eugene and book Jogging were credited with helping to ignite the national jogging craze in the late 1960s.

The TrackTown fitness runners are the latest to join that effort.

Miller is preparing for the upcoming Eugene Marathon 5K on May 6; Milliman is training for the 5K Twilight Run in Tigard on June 24.

Milliman said the welcoming, friendly atmosphere of TrackTown Fitness keeps her coming back.

I love the people. They inspire me to do my very best, said Milliman, who started exercising when she was 75, encouraged by her son and grandson.

Participants can self-select into one of three workout groups: the joggers, the walkers and those who do both.

Birk Nelson, 43, has attended the Sunday sessions since the winter of 2015. He comes to stay in shape. The three distinct groups promote comfort, enabling participants to work out with their fitness peers, but they also provide motivation to do better.

My aspiration is to be in the run group someday, Nelson said. After a long winter of hibernation, its nice to get the body moving and have other people around to inspire you.

Alfred Lara, 64, has been attending TrackTown Fitness to condition for a fencing competition this month. Its a great workout, and its inspirational to see all these people running around at different ages and levels, Lara said.

Anne-Jenelle Williams, 49, completes a long run on Saturday and attends TrackTown Fitness on Sunday for a recovery run. She is training for the Eugene Half Marathon her third half marathon since December.

Williams ran her first half marathon in December two days after she turned 49 and she has a personal goal to complete five half marathons by the time she turns 50.

The social aspect of TrackTown Fitness keeps Williams coming back every Sunday.

Im not as quick as a lot of my running friends are, and when we work out together on the road, bike path or around town, I see them at the beginning and the end, she says. When were on the track, I get to be around them even though were running very different paces.

As the morning workout draws to a close, runners hydrate at the water station and slow down to catch their breath.

An upbeat Simple Plan song blasts across the brilliant field: Its been 28 days since Ive seen the sunshine and I know some days will be bad, but I dont wanna be sad no more.

Motivation Monday: 5 fitness myths that are holding you back – KARE

Motivation Monday: Busting fitness myths

KARE 10:25 AM. CDT April 03, 2017

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - It seems every day there's a new exercise craze, a new diet, a new supplement that promises to deliver the fitness results that have eluded you for so long.

Some of it is helpful, and some of it is just fake!

1. Working out on an empty stomach helps you lose weight

Chris says working out on an empty stomach doesn't exactly help you burn more fat. Exercise uses energy from fat and glycogen stores. But when you exercise in a fasted state, you have depleted glycogen levels, which causes your body to not only burn fat but also start to break down muscle tissue and convert it to carbohydrate for energy. This means you're losing muscle!

2. Lifting heavy weights makes you bulk up

Chris says heavy weights are good! They help you put on lean muscle, which isn't bulky, it's actually what contributes to the "toned" appearance. You're probably not going to achieve bodybuilder status unless you're also consuming massive amounts of protein.

3. You need a low-carb diet to lose weight

Chris says contrary to popular belief, carbs are not necessarily your enemy when trying to lose weight or eat healthy. There are complex carbs, like vegetables, fruit, legumes, and whole grains that are generally considered healthy.

4. Muscle weighs more than fat

Chris says a pound of muscle and a pound of fat actually weigh the same. The only difference is how they appear. A pound of muscle looks lean and dense; a pound of fat is airy like cotton candy and takes up more space.

5. Crunches are the key to flat abs

Crunches are not the only step in getting a lean tummy. Chris says you need to start by losing any excess weight that's covering up your abs. Since you can't spot-reduce body fat, this means losing weight all over. Second, you need to tone that area using a variety of abdominal exercises that target different core muscles.

Orange Fitness cracks the fitness code – KSHB

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Forget the Theory of Relativity.

Make room for the Theory of Orange-ativity!

Just a few days up and running in Brookside, Orange Theory Fitness is already making a difference in the health and well-being of hundreds of people.

.@joelkclive checks out @KCMO newest @OTheoryFitness Brookside #MotivationMonday pic.twitter.com/qt7te0UvHT

It all started with a quest by physiologist Ellen Latham to crack the fitness code.

She has devised a heart-rate monitored, high intensity workout that spikes metabolism and increases energy.

Now, her theory has spread all over the country including Kansas City.

The lead trainer at the Brookside location, Helena Vilott, says orange is the color of energy and also the color exercisers are aiming for on the overhead monitors.

Classes go on from before sun-up until after sundown.

Every age and fitness level will find a place to maximize his or her abilities.

Right now, they are focused on Spring Cleaning for your fitness routine: a checklist to help you remove the clutterand get back on track.

As it says on the wall, right when you walk into the facility: Turn Your Body Into the Sexiest Outfit Youll Ever Own.

Around here, orange is the new fit.

New Whitehall senior center to offer exercise classes, card games and camaraderie – Allentown Morning Call

Word that 200 seniors from Whitehall were going to the Lehigh Valley Active Life Center on Elm Street in Allentown every year struck Whitehall Township Commissioner Jeffrey Dutt as a clear sign of demand.

Dutt, who was elected in November 2015, began his political campaign on the prospects of providing a community center for everyone in Whitehall. But a place where senior citizens could exercise, play games, take classes and make friends seemed to be a more pressing need.

"Just about every person I talked to that was 60 or older said we need more senior activities in Whitehall," Dutt said. "Years ago, there was a very active senior club in the township. We want to rekindle that."

After about two years of work, Whitehall's active life center will hold its grand opening from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday. The center is located at the West Catasauqua Community Center, 2301 Pine St., which is township-owned and did not require any renovations, Dutt said.

Programs will include fitness classes, bingo, card club, dance lessons, art classes and history programs. Though classes aren't slated to start until May 3, sign-ups can begin Tuesday.

Hours at the Whitehall facility will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays through Friday, with hot lunches served each day.

Dutt said there's hope that demand for the center will eventually outgrow its current location and allow for expansion.

The center will be operated by administrators from the Lehigh Valley Active Life Center at 1633 Elm St., which is partially sponsored by the Lehigh County Office of Aging and Adult Services.

Diane Nolan, director of development and programming at Lehigh Valley Active Life, said the facility has always hosted a number of Whitehall residents.

Nolan said the offerings of a senior-centric community center provide big gains in quality-of- life improvement for residents.

"Especially after retirement, when our worlds shrink a little bit, this can make a difference," Nolan said. "It's important to socialize with our peers. Research shows that's beneficial."

Whitehall Mayor Ed Hozza Jr. praised the volunteer efforts that went into transforming the idea of a senior center into a reality. The shortage of a haven for the township's senior citizens was a reoccurring issue, he said.

"As mayor, I have seen and spoken with many of our seniors who experience daily loneliness and lack of interaction," Hozza said. "This center will provide for them a space, activities, food and fellowship that will improve their well-being and quality of life."

Tuesday's grand opening will include giveaways and free food from Red Lobster, Carmel Kitchen and Wine Bar, Panera and Chik-fil-a, among others, as well as appearances by county, state and local officials, according to Jessica O'Donnell, senior vice president of central affiliated chambers with the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce.
