LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 3, 2017) - For many parents, it's understandably difficult to find time to exercise. This can be especially true for parents with young children, all of whom have behavior problems from time to time. At the beginning or end of a long day, exercising often feels like the last thing we want to do. But, as parents, taking care of ourselves is necessary in order to have the energy, health, and disposition to be the best parents we can be. When we don't feel good, parenting is harder.
We are beginning to learn more about the relationship between physical activity and parenting outcomes. Research shows that parents with depression and/or poor physical health have a harder time practicing effective parenting strategies. Exercise, meanwhile, can have positive effects on both psychological and physical health. It's correlated with increased happiness, better moods, improved cognitive performance, and, of course, physical fitness. We know from extensive research that exercise can ease symptoms of depression and anxiety. It releases "feel good" hormones and increases body temperature, which can help calm us. Staying physically active can also help us maintain enough energy to keep up with our kids (especially those little ones!) and live long lives so that we're there for our children as they grow up. While it might be difficult to find ways to add physical activity to your life, there are significant potential benefits to your own wellbeing, your parenting, and your relationship with your children.
You don't have to get a gym membership or go to spin classes to get moving. One strategy to add more physical activity to your life is to do fun, active things as a family. Instead of watching a movie, you could play pretend and "chase" each other around your house. You can go on a walk together, explore a new park (but don't sit on the bench while the kids play), take the stairs and count them together, or park as far away from the store and note all the colors of cars as you walk to the door. You could learn to jump rope, pogo stickor hula hoop together.
There are also many online, at-home exercise programs that are designed specifically for parents and playfully incorporate children into the exercising. A quick Google search will lead you to a variety of options, including free and low-cost video programs.
If you have low energy and/or are not enjoying time with your child, it is important to speak to your health care provider.
At the University of Kentucky, we are currently conducting a research study to learn more about the relationship between physical activity and parenting, and we're looking for parents to participate. If you are the parent of a 3-5 year old child, sometimes struggle with your childs behavior, and do not exercise regularly, you may be eligible for this study. Day of Hope: Survivorship program helps turn the page – Lompoc Record

Dr. Cheryl Decker doesnt like the term palliative care.
Our aim here is to be very supportive of patients to survive and thrive. Palliative care is comfort care, but most people associate the term with end of life. It doesnt mean end of life, Decker explained.
So immediately upon taking up her role at Mission Hope Cancer Center eight months ago, she changed her official title to Medical Director, Mission Hope Cancer Center Survivorship and Support Care Program.
The goal: to send a much more accurate, positive message to patients, and thereby encourage them to take advantage of all the programs offered by the Central Coasts only full-service, one-stop cancer care center.
In her role, Decker strives to maintain the best possible quality of life in patients living with cancer by offering individualized consultation. She coordinates cancer surveillance and cancer prevention plans for each patient, and works to keep Mission Hope patients from emergency department visits and unnecessary hospitalizations.
We have a mission and overall desire to treat the whole patient, meaning not just their cancer, but the stresses that surround whatever their illness is. With cancer, there are a lot of things that patients have to deal with: anxiety about what treatment will be like; if its completed, when or if they will be coming back. You live with that every day. Some patients dont cope well with that. Some become depressed. Theres a whole spectrum of emotional distress, Decker said.
Patients' needs, like their cancers, are entirely individual. Some are able to treat with surgery; some with chemotherapy; some with radiation; some with an entire gamut of treatment options.
Theres a hundred different things they have to worry about. There are issues during, and even long after, treatments they deal with to recover their sense of well being and their energy levels, Decker said.
Her primary role is to work with those patients to help them turn the page and thrive.
Bringing all the doctors and services under one roof at Mission Hope has been a big step in that direction.
We can pool together resources. Im part of that whole support system for all of our patients, Decker said.
Services free to cancer patients include massages, acupuncture, exercise classes, a dedicated exercise physiologist, tai chi, yoga, origami, meditation and journaling. There are guest speakers and support groups covering everything from daily living to coping with challenges and sexual intimacy.
Where else do you find people who will talk to you about these kinds of things, Decker asked.
Dealing with overwhelming challenges when living with cancer, pain and other physical and emotional symptoms all affect quality of life, she said, and stress can have a big impact on patients and their loved ones.
We know people who are more optimistic and have better, less-stressful approaches to life, are happier, do better. We know that. Those studies are clear. So if we can help patients get to a better place, that helps, Decker said.
Programs range from genetic screening to an online wellness program and more.
Cancer is really changing, and thats exciting. We have doubled the survival rates for cancer in the last five years. Thats remarkable. In some cancers, we have close to a 100 percent cure rate. Breast cancer has a 90 percent cure rate. That was not thought of in the past. Were in this exponential curve up in how cancer care is going, Decker said.
She credits the cure rates to improved cares, variety of therapies and optimism.
We have whole new classes of drugs or therapies that didnt exist at all when I was in medical school 25 years ago. All we had before was chemotherapy. Now we have immunotherapy and targeted drug therapies that are just amazing and have given people longer lives. In some cases, they cure, and in others they give them years instead of months to live, Decker said.
Her programs also stress cancer prevention.
There are some tangible things you can do with your diet, exercise, wellness programs. Our online program allows patients to self-direct a wellness plan that is personalized to them to empower them to do things that have been shown to reduce the risk for getting cancer, Decker said.
Patient advocates provide support groups not only for patients, but for care givers as well as children of cancer patients.
Im here for people who have had cancer at any point in their lives. If its been five years, and, hey, youre not doing well, not thriving, not turning the page in your life and moving on, come see me. If there are symptoms that are holding them back and theyre not able perform the primary functions of life, Im a resource, Decker said.

The musical artist simply known as Pink has a message for new moms: Stay off that scale. How much weight you lose, and how quickly you lose it, really doesn't matter.
To prove that point, Pink, who just had her second baby in late December, posted an Instagrampicture on Sunday of herself at the gym, along with a strikingly honest and body-positive message for her fans.
"Would you believe I'm 160 pounds and 5'3"?" she wrote. "By 'regular standards' that makes me obese. I know I'm not at my goal or anywhere near it after Baby 2 but dammit I don't feel obese."
In fact, she feels great.
"The only thing I'm feeling is myself. Stay off that scale ladies!" she concluded.
With so many celebrities hawking things like weight loss tablets and "revenge bodies," Pink's message comes as a welcome surprise. It also appears to have struck a nerve with her followers on Instagram, gaining 230,000 likes and counting.
"Girl, I needed to hear this, this gives me life!!! Struggle is real after a baby," one commenter wrote. Another: "I was just about to weigh myself after giving birth just over 5 weeks ago, knowing I'd dread the sight of that damn number. Saw an article about your post so won't bother know."
In a world wholly obsessed with celebrities losing weight as soon as possible after having a baby, this feels like a message that should be heard by everyone.

Have you ever thought about changing your tableware?
Fast-food chains and chefs have known for years that there are many factors that influence our appetite. For example, bright colours such as yellow and red combined with harsh lighting will cause you order more, and eat quickly. Conversely, dim lighting and soft music means you'll linger longer over your meal, but consume less.
Dr Brian Wansink, director of Cornell Universitys Food & Brand Lab in the US, and author of Slim by Design: Mindless Eating Solutions for Everyday Life (HarperCollins) agrees that the colours of our walls, plates, settings and lighting, can influence on how much we eat, and even what we eat.
For a long time it's been believed that colours excite or inhibit what people eat, he says. There's no one colour of plate which causes people to eat less, but rather, it's influenced by the colour of the food you eat. This is because there needs to be a contrast between the food and the plate it's served on, he explains. For instance, serving white carbohydrates on a dark plate highlights the colour difference and makes you aware of your portion size. Without a contrast between the two, you'll eat 18 per cent more, he adds.
Changing the colour of your plates and bowls can help you take control of your portion sizes. Adults eat 92 per cent of anything they serve themselves, so if you serve yourself a lot, you'll eat a lot, Wansink says.
The Journal of Nutrition reports that portion sizes have increased 138 per cent since the 1970s and a major contributor to our obesity problem. In Australia, it's estimated that 67 per cent of men and 52 per cent of women are obese, largely due to over-consumption of kilojoules.
We asked Wansink changes we can make to take control of our eating habits.
If you eat too fast, you're more likely to overeat or not realise that you're full, but if you eat mindfully that is, slowly and more thoughtfully youre more likely to make better food choices, which can lead to weight loss, according to studies cited by Harvard Medical School in the US. He suggests using a plate in a calming colour such as pale pink or grey, which will make you more likely to slow down and pay attention to your meal and environment.
Accredited practicing dietitian, Jenna Obeid says you shouldnt cut out carbs entirely as theyre a crucial part of a balanced diet, but adds that its important to monitor our portions a quarter of your plate is an ideal portion. Wansink says:
If you tend to overeat carbs, don't put these meals on white plates. Try red, navy or black instead.
The small bowl/small portion theory is a myth, according to researchers at the University of Liverpool in the UK. After conducting an experiment using popcorn, they said, If anything, participants ate more when using a smaller bowl. They say a smaller dish means youre more likely to go back for seconds.
Around 96 per cent of Aussies snack between meals, according to a 2014 Nielsen survey. The wrong snacks (such as those high in sugar) or too large a portion, can lead to weight gain. "If there's anything you want to save for your 'treat day', or leftovers, wrap it in foil," Wansink says. This way you won't be visually tempted."
The George Institute of Global Health in Sydney has found that half of Aussies eat more than double the recommended daily amount of sugar, with an average of 60g a day; the World Health Organisation advises cutting your intake to 25g.
Serve sweets such as vanilla ice-cream in a dark-coloured bowl, or chocolate ice-cream in a white bowl, says Wansink. The higher the contrast, the smaller size portion you'll be likely to have.

Danielle French, 28, said she could barely fit into any of her clothes after ballooning to 1st 4lb.
The mortgage advisor from Barnsley, who was a size 18 before, feared that she would be a big bride and would end up hating her wedding snaps.
She explained: After getting engaged I continued to put on lots of weight until March 2015 when I got to my biggest and could barely fit in any of my clothes.
I really didnt want to be a big bride and look at my wedding photos and hate what I saw.

I decided I would give it a go as it was one of the only diets I hadnt tried.
I joined online and created an Instagram account to post about my weight loss journey to keep me motivated.
It took Danielle a year to get to her goal weight and she was able to walk down the aisle at Wentworth Castle as a tiny size six and at a weight of 8st.
She said: Losing the weight has changed my life in so many more ways than I could have ever imagined.
Before I hated going out with my friends because I felt so self-conscious and awful in everything I wore.
I lived in leggings and baggy tops to hide the fact I had put on weight.
I was also really unfit and got out of breath really easily whenever I walked more than half a mile.
I suffer from IBS and since losing the weight and eating a much healthier balanced diet, I hardly ever get symptoms now.

She added: I dont feel like the fat one out of my friends anymore. I love getting dressed up and going out.
I hated shopping for clothes when I was bigger as I refused to buy bigger sizes.
I can now walk in to a shop, try things on and like what I see.
She said all of her friends and family have been amazed by her transformation.
Danielle said: They are all really proud of me and cant believe how much weight I have lost and how different I look now.
But on top of following Slimming World I dont think I could have done it without my Instagram food blogging page and the support I get from all my lovely followers.
Danielle shared her weight loss journey as it was revealed there are a number of tricks that can be used to ensure a diet plan works every time.

You were born with the perfect beach body. All you need to do to keep it that way is feed it well and keep it moving. A lot of people dont know that and thats too bad.
Spring is here and people, both women and men, are checking themselves out to see what needs to be done to get the perfect beach body. It may be a major renovation or some work in specific areas.
If you think your body is flawed it doesnt help to be looking at highly photoshopped pics of stars. Comparing your body to any one of Americas first family of reality TV, the Kardashians, with their surgically enhanced extreme coke bottle shapes discourages some and amuses others.
Men compare their bodies to professional athletes and find they come up short. Well, of course, because athletes bodies is a product of their jobs. They train hard and eat a special diet to be at the top of their game. Its not realistic for most men to think their lifestyle is going to be compatible with a professional athletes body,
We start life with no concept of our bodies. After a few months we start to make the connection, Hey this is part of me! We grow a little more and we learn to control our body parts. We love discovering what we can do with them and what they enable us to do. We dont think in terms of flaws. We saw nothing wrong with rolls and rolls on our little baby thighs.
As we grow we gain new perspectives through conditioning. Our family may make casual or joking comments about our bodies.

These little statements often said in fun and with love get to us. We are further conditioned by the media. The men and women we see dont look like us. They look better and we want to measure up.
Our once perfectly good thighs that never failed to do what we needed them to do walk, play, run, get us where were going, etc we come to realize are unsightly. We find out from a magazine or a television commercial or a friend or family member that thighs that rub together are flawed or if they exceed a certain circumference they are ruining our quest for the perfect beach body.
Its not uncommon to think that self-hate or flaw-finding is a good thing. Some think that we cant improve unless we find out what needs improving and to do that we need to identify our flaws. I disagree on many levels. I dont want a media image to tell me how I need to look to be flawless. I dont want to waste my life trying to change what wont change and doesnt need to change. I dont want to hate what I have because its never going to be good enough.
I did that once. I dieted to fix my flaws. I got much too thin but didnt see how skinny Id become. All I saw were my flaws. I hoped that losing weight would get rid of them and it did make the flaws not as bad but they were still there. I wished I had the money to surgically remove my flaws and meanwhile, but I didnt (plus I dont like scalpels and stitches.)
I wanted to look and feel my best. It was hard to make choices that supported the goal of looking and feeling good when I hated parts of my body because they looked wrong. I often made choices that undermined my goal. I overate and chose the couch over any physical activity, even fun activities.
I believed that there really was no point in eating and exercising because no matter how thin I got, Id never look right. After wasting too much time hating myself for not being able to shape my body into flawless perfection and hating my body because it wasnt adequately moldable and thus flawless I changed my thinking.
I read an essay written by somebody who sounded just like me. I could have written that essay until I got to the part where she decided she wasnt flawed; her perceptions were flawed.
She described how writing that letter of apology helped her regain perception. There was nothing wrong with her body and it deserved her love and good care.She realized her body washer perfect beach body.
It just takes looking at it with a new perspective. Stop putting your body or body parts down because they dont look a certain way. Appreciate what you body or body parts do for you. Write yourself a letter of apology and treat yourself the way you would treat a beloved friend.
Do you need weight to have a perfect beach body? No you dont. but your body might benefit in looks and energy if you feed it well and give it regular physical activity.

BLUE ISLAND, Illinois -- In 2011, Rafael Zuniga weighed over 800 pounds. His weight was a lifelong battle that spiraled out of control.
Over the past six years, he has lost500 pounds. In theory, he did it by himself. But he'll tell you he wasn't alone. It was an app that got him on the path to living again.
Zuniga, 45,was once confined to his Chicago-area home after drinking and eating away his life.
Stress from work as a real estate adjuster and a bad break up left him at an all-time high of 831 pounds. Alcoholand fast food were his best friends.
"Im always thinking Ive got to lose a couple hundred pounds and Ill be back in the mix," he says. But it wasn't a couple hundred pounds. My weight doubled. I was in shock. As stupid as it sounds, I was in shock."
Rock bottom
"When I was unable to keep cleaning myself, I guess that was my rock bottom," he says.
In July of 2011, he was taken to the hospital and labeled morbidly obese. He was fighting lymphdema, hypertension, and cellulitis among other things.
It was a turning point forZuniga.
"It was a beautiful day out and I had seen everybody. Life was passing me by," hesaid.
That is when Zuniga decided to change his path of physical and financial ruin to one of wellness. After researching weight loss, he discoveredthe app "LoseIt!"
Zuniga'sgoal was to weigh250 pounds and travel the world.
"The image of me just being by an ocean, man, that helped me out tremendously, he says.
How the weight loss app changed his life
Zuniga uses the app to count his calories, track his meals, and seek support from other users trying to lose weight. The app teaches him to eat smarter, he says.
But he has also been exercising. At first, it meant the smallest of movements.
"I was sitting at the edge of my bed doing sit ups. I refused to believe that I was disabled, he says.
Zuniga does cardio five times a week and lifts weights two to four times a week. He eats a high-protein diet, cuts out the carbs, and counts every calorie he eats.
And he has not had any surgicalprocedure to lose the weight. There is no more alcohol and he does take a prescribed appetite suppressant.
The real motivator? A vacation
In 2014, Zuniga's dream came true. Labeling himself as"skinny for him," he was down to 400 pounds,-- so his father booked him a business class seat to the Dominican Republic.
Over the past three years, Zuniga has shed another 100 pounds bringing his overall weight loss in excess of 500 pounds.
Right now, he'd like to lose another 50 and get his doctors more comfortable with the idea of double knee replacements for his severe osteoarthritis. Removing his excess skin might get him close, but insurance doesn't cover the procedure.
Zuniga is just the beginning of the rest of his life. Clean living with the help of an app is opening a whole new world for him.

Now were into the fourth month of the year, hows your New Years resolutions going?
If you were one of the many who picked losing weight or eating more healthily as their aim for 2017, youre probably not going so great. We dont say that because we doubt your willpower, but because the research shows youre very unlikely to have stuck to your best intentions.
A great blog by the CSIRO sets out the stats that back up that supposition; nine out of 10 Aussie adults have attempted to lose weight at some time, five in 10 have tried more than six times to do the same, and almost one in five has tried more than 25 times!
So, where do we go so wrong?
The CSIROs scientists studied 4,000 people to learn how Australians diet, which helped it identify five distinct diet personality types, all of which have their own particular pitfall. The science agency believes that although eating more healthily will help people lose weight, each personality type has its own Achilles heel when it comes to staying on the diet wagon.
Heres how the diet personalities line up:
The Thinker makes up 41 percent of all dieters. These people are goal-oriented and analytical, but they overthink their diet and worry about it, and that can lead to anxiety and stress that kicks off over-eating, derailing the best of diet plans.
The Craver, at 25 percent of all dieters, loves yummy food and finds it hard to stop eating, particularly in tempting situations. The CSIRO found that young adults and people who were obese tended to fall into this group.
The Foodie 15 percent are the most likely to be in a normal weight range, despite enjoying making, eating and experiencing food.
The Socialiser 15 percent need flexibility. They wont let a diet restrict their social life.
The Freewheeler 4 percent- is a spontaneous and impulsive eater, which makes planning meals hard for them.
CSIRO launched a free diet plans launched around the diet personality type, to help people avoid their personal pitfalls.
Manny Noakes, research director at the CSIRO, says that dieters have always assumed that losing weight was just about picking theright foods, when behavioural science was needed to help people stick to their diet and sustain their weight loss.
For many people, they will achieve success eating a healthy diet but actually maintaining it appears to be elusive for a good number of people, Noakes told 9Honey. We do think [ours] is a unique and new approach.
