Fitness challenge designed to improve health, camaraderie – Bloomington Pantagraph

BLOOMINGTON A coalition dedicated to making the healthy choice, the easy choice, in McLean County wants county residents to come together this spring by exercising more and in different places with other people.

The McLean County Wellness Coalition's Workplace Wellness Subcommittee on Tuesday unveiled a six-week fitness challenge for any county resident age 16 and older designed to track exercise minutes, experience new places to exercise and increase camaraderie.

"This is an opportunity free of charge for the community," said coalition member Brandi Kimball of Four Seasons Health Club. "We would like to get people up and moving."

The coalition includes representatives of McLean County hospitals, local governments, human services agencies, schools, fitness centers and businesses. The subcommittee met Tuesday afternoon at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center's Center for Healthy Lifestyles.

The challenge is April 10 through May 20. Each Monday, participants will be asked to submit total minutes of intentional exercise performed the prior week, explained Erin Kennedy of St. Joseph's Center for Healthy Lifestyles.

In addition, to promote variety of exercise, the coalition has developed a focus of the week. Participants can earn one bonus point for each day they exercise at a "focus of the week" location, Kennedy said.

For week one, the focus is exercising in a park. For week two, the focus is exercising at a fitness center because many fitness centers offer free trials, Kennedy said.

For week three, the focus is exercising at home; for week four, exercising at work; and for week five, exercising with a buddy. The week six focus is supporting the community's Good to Go Challenge by finding an alternative way to commute other than driving by yourself.

"It's important for people to step out of their regular workout," said JoAnne Glancy of Project Oz.

"This is an opportunity for people to find something that fits them," said Jackie Beckner of the town of Normal. "They may be in a park playing with their kids. It may not feel like a workout but it is."

"The best exercise is the one that you actually will do," said Sarah Sommer of Advocate BroMenn Health & Fitness Center.

"By using our parks and different areas of the community, people are getting out and meeting new people," said Laine Sylvester of The Snyder Companies.

Brian Thede of the McLean County Chamber of Commerce's Employers' Coalition for Healthcare Inc. noted that wellness programs are good for businesses because they improve morale and productivity and reduce stress and health care costs.

Kennedy said the coalition supports the work of the Community Health Needs Assessment, which found that 32 percent of county residents are obese.

ROCovery: Fitness Program Helps Those Fighting Addiction – Spectrum News

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- An old firehouse on Dewey Avenue in Rochester is close to reopening as ROCovery Fitness, a not-for-profit which Yana Khashper hopes can help change, maybe even save lives.

"Slowly but surely alcohol and other substances took over my life," Khashper said. "My life came to a screeching halt as a result of a DWI."

That was four years ago. Facing criminal consequences, she went into treatment. She's been sober for three years. Khashper and her fiancstarted ROCovery Fitness to help in their own recovery.

"Today, we're a sober active community and a non-profit, but we got started by scheduling a hike on our Facebook page," she said.

That first hike two years ago had 10-12 people. Today, the group has 1,000 members. They hike, cycle, kayak, do yoga, meditate and they climb mountains.

"You've lost everything and there's shame and guilt and you don't think you can do anything with your life," Khashper said. "Then you come to Adirondacks to climb a mountain."

"There gets to be a point on that mountain, where you don't want to do it anymore, but you have someone there with you, and they reach out their hand and they tell you, 'you can keep going, you can do this.'"

Khashpersays the long winters made many outdoor activities difficult, so they wanted a place where they could come and meet every day.

The old firehouse will open in a few weeks as just that. They'll have exercise rooms and classes, art and dance expression, rooms for group meetings and spaces for social events like Sober Super Bowl.

One of the biggest challenges in finding a permanent space to hold meetings and have activities is finding the perfect building and then affording it. That's when Khashpersays an angel stepped in.

"She had lost her son to overdose last year and she wanted to give back and wanted to help us," Khashper said. "She said she thinks if this had been available earlier, things would've been different for her son, so she bought this building for us."

Many of the plumbers, masons and contractors did the renovation work inside for free. The group is applying for grants and there's a GoFundMe page to help pay for expenses so it can keep helping those who struggle every day with sobriety.

Patrick Mullin, who helped found the group, had been in recovery, relapsed and died of an overdose March 7th. Because of him, Yana says the center will have a 24-hour support line and will never stop being a resource for those who need it. "We just hope stay grass roots. We have this idea of being a staple in the community and when folks think of recover, they think of ROCovery Fitness and they feel at home here."

Fitness trackers: When technology goes too far – Green Bay Press Gazette

Nick Rozek, For USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin 1:37 p.m. CT March 21, 2017

According to a statista.com study, wearable fitness devices are expected to exceed $4 billion in sales in 2017. These devices are everywhere. Some people have two for themselves, one for each child, and now even pets.

Tracking devices offer a fashionable way to participate in workplace challenges, be part of a health-conscious online community, and are a convenient way to measure many types of health-related data.

However, simply strapping a tracking watch on your wrist mightnot be enough to consider this expense a worthwhile investment. Take time to consider if you are in control of your health-and-activity tracking device, or if it is controlling you.

RELATED: Tips to help find your motivation to exercise

RELATED:Heart health made easy

Below are four common examples of when fitness trackers have too much influence on our behavior.

I feel great on todays jog, but my heart rate is getting too high. I should probably slow down.

Problem: Technology provides us with accurate measures of how hard we are working. Being able to train based on heart rate, power, pace, etc., is great for achieving specific event goals. Problems arise when we allow these measures to completely overtake our own personal feelings.

Solution: True benefits of training may be found by listening to how your body feels, as opposed to listening to your technology device. Next time you work out, pay attention to how you feel inside, take notes, and compare these feelings before and after each workout.

Well there goes another day of not reaching X number of steps. I guess I am not meant to reach my goals.

Problem: Tracking apps and wearables are great tools when we use them to positively reinforce good behaviors. The trouble begins when we allow our emotions and expectations to be controlled by their results.

Solution: Do not be disappointed in yourself when you do not live up to the numbers on your watch. Rather than hoping for the device to show you different results, take action to make a positive change within yourself.

I am too anxious just sitting here at my desk. I cannot focus, but according to my device its not time to take a break yet.

Problem: Ever feel your eyes hurt from staring at a screen for too long? Notice your legs bouncing furiously at your desk? Our wrist-bits are smart enough to sense a lack of movement and offer a gentle buzz to remind us to get up. Problems arise when we wait for this notification versus listening to our body when we need a few minutes away from our desk.

Solution: Self-awareness is a critical component to behavior change. Understanding your bodys natural signals will help you be more proactive in creating positive behaviors, rather than being reactive and simply waiting for your wrist to buzz. When you feel the sensation that you need to turn away from your screen or walk for two minutes do so.

Another night of poor sleep? Ugh hopefully, I sleep better tomorrow.

Problem: Tracking devices provide useful snapshots of data. Problems arise when we simply take in this information without doing anything about what it is telling us. Focusing on individual data points, such as a single night of sleep, mightdistract us from the bigger picture.

Solution: Use your wearable technology to follow trends in your lifestyle habits. If your device shows you have been sleeping poorly, make adjustments to your nightly routine in an effort to improve your sleep quality. Turn off the TV at least an hour before you get ready for sleep and avoid using phones in the bedroom. Try these tips and see if you can recognize improved sleep patterns over the course of the following weeks and months.

Advances in wearable technology have given us more measurable health data than ever before. After making the investment, be sure you are in control of your device, and you will find more value in the technology and in your healthy living journey.

Rescue Run Club aims to socialize, exercise shelter dogs – Daily Comet

By Bridget Mire Staff Writer

Looking to get active and help shelter dogs? The Lafourche Parish Animal Shelter's new Rescue Run Fridays have you covered.

At 9 a.m. every Friday starting this week, volunteers will walk or run three miles with all adoptable dogs at the shelter, 934 La. 3185, Thibodaux. Anyone who has not already completed a volunteer orientation should show up 20 minutes early for a brief overview.

Shelter Manager Hilary Knight Detillier said the goal of Rescue Run Fridays is to attract more volunteers who will continue helping out weeks or months from now. The shelter dogs are kenneled and don't have access to exercise yards.

"We have got to start getting these dogs out and moving," Detillier said. "We are kind of gridlocked as far as our space for activity goes. I've been trying to get volunteers out here walking dogs for a long time."

When Lafourche took in dogs from other facilities after the August flooding in Baton Rouge, dozens of people showed up to walk dogs in the mornings and evenings. The shelter kept a schedule to spread out the volunteers.

"We had a huge outpouring of help in August, and then that really dwindled," Detillier said. "If we do this every week, I'm hoping it will stick. ... People have jobs, and our hours are not in line with when people are off. But there are a lot of people that are off on Fridays."

She said she's hoping college students who don't have class at that time decide to spend their Friday mornings at the shelter.

Betsy Magee, chairwoman of the shelter's advisory board, noted that other animal shelters have established exercise programs pairing dogs with volunteers. For example, the St. Charles Parish Animal Shelter has the Rescue Run Club, which meets every Thursday morning.

"I think it's a wonderful thing," Magee said. "It's great for the runners, and it's surely great for the animals."

The shelter's hours have also changed, and it's now open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Previously, it was open from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on the same days.

Detillier said the new hours will give the staff more time to clean in the morning and potential adopters more time to get to the shelter in the afternoon. Employees will still be available to help with low-cost spay and neuter paperwork and people searching for lost pets before the shelter opens for adoptions, she added.

She said the shelter is always looking for volunteers to socialize animals, complete tasks around the office or help with events, but they must attend orientations first. The shelter posts orientation dates on its Facebook page.

High-Intensity Interval Training Could Help You Live Longer | Care2 … – Care2.com

High-intensity interval training, or HIIT, is all the rage in the fitness world right now. Many exerciseenthusiasts tout itsbenefits, including more efficient calorie burning and improvements inmetabolism. And now there could be one other big reason to love HIIT it may helpreverse the aging process.

Rather than working out at a moderate, steady pace for a longer period of time, such as an hour, HIIT switches things up. This type of interval trainingencourages vigorous, sprint-inspired exercises in very short bursts of30 seconds to a minute, followed by short rest periodsbefore repeating it all over again and finishing several rounds in as little as 10 to 15minutes.

Researchers recently publishedastudyin the journal Cell Metabolism that examinedwhat was happening at the cellular level of participants who engaged in HIIT compared to other forms of exercise. Their findings suggest that HIIT led to improvements in age-related decline in muscle mitochondria.

Thirty-sixmen and 36 women participated in the study. The researchers divided themby age, with one younger group ofthose between ages 18 and30, and one older groupof individuals between ages 65 and80.

The participants in both age groups were instructed to follow one of three 12-week exercise programs a HIIT program, a weight training program or a combination of both. The HIIT program involved cycling in bursts three days a week and treadmill walking two days a week.

Not surprisingly, all participants in every group improved their fitness levels by the end of the 12-week period. But those who followed the HIIT program experienced the greatest benefits when researchers examined changesat the cellularlevel.

The mitochondrial capacity, a response to greater energy expenditure, increased by 49 percent on average in the younger group and by as much as 69 percent in the older group. This processslows down as we age, but the older group that completed the HIIT program showed improvements comparable to the cells found in bodies of younger people. The weight training program and combined HIIT plus weight training didnt seem to affect the mitochondrial capacity much at all.

Both young and old who completed the HIIT program also experienced improvements in their insulin sensitivity, which lowersthe risk of diabetes. In addition to that, there wasan increase in ribosome activity, which helps build muscle.

The researchers concluded that HIIT may be very effective for reversing age-related changes in cells, but an article published byPopular Science regardingthe study stresses that there are still too many caveats to make such a conclusion without further investigation.

While HIIT is a fantastic form of exercise for anyone who is able and willing to do it, studies that examine the effects of exercise at the cellular level dont tell the whole story and fail to consider other factorsto people in a practical sense such as their desires to build muscle, slim down, and so on.

More research is needed, but that doesnt mean you cant start a HIIT regimen now or in the near future. Other recent research has found that people tend to preferHIIT over moderate-intensity exercise, so if youre looking to switch things up in your workout, HIIT could be a seriously great solution.

How eating carbs can actually help you lose weight – Fox News

A number of diets Paleo, Atkins, ketogenic, and more suggest limiting carbs to achieve optimal weight and health. But if youre trying to shed pounds, are carbs off limits?

Perhaps surprisingly, no a variety of carbs can actually be part of a healthy weight loss diet. It all depends on the type of carbs, and the amount, Sheah Rarback, a registered dietitian at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, told Fox News.

In fact, A good, healthy, whole grain, high fiber carb source can help you feel fuller longer, Kristen Gradney, a spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and a dietitian based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, told Fox News. These types of carbs can actually help lower your appetite, increase satiety, and help keep your blood sugar in check, she said.

7 FOODS THAT HELP FIGHT FAT

Fox News asked a few nutritionists for their tips on which carbohydrate-rich snacks are the best choices for those looking to lose weight:

1. A green apple with nut butter When youre eating a snack with carbohydrates, try to balance it with a bit of protein, Rarback recommended. That way, youll feel full longer. Protein-rich foods also use up a few more calories to digest and metabolize, Rarback said. She recommended a green apple, which is lower in sugar than a red apple, with some nut butter as a healthy, carbohydrate-rich snack.

WHAT'S BETTER FOR WEIGHT LOSS: CARDIO OR LIFTING WEIGHTS?

2. Cut-up vegetables with a bean dip or hummus Another great combo is vegetables and bean dip, Rarback said. The beans provide complex carbohydrates and protein, while the vegetables (and beans!) provide fiber.

3. A smoothie with milk, yogurt, and fruit Instead of ice cream, try a smoothie packed with milk, yogurt, and fruit, Gradney suggested. She noted milk is actually a carbohydrate because it contains lactose, a type of sugar. It also has protein and plenty of vitamins and minerals, just like yogurt.

6 WAYS TO KICK-START YOUR WEIGHT LOSS IN THE MORNING

4. Fruit and nut bars Gradney recommends eating carb-rich snacks in the mid-morning to help prevent you from overeating at lunch and right after work, when you may be hungry and more likely to be tempted by fast food or quick, unhealthy options. If youre on the go, try fruit and nut bars with no added sugars, or even a small portion of dried fruit.

5. Half of a turkey or cheese sandwich Lori Chong, a registered dietitian at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, told Fox News that half a sandwich can be an ideal snack, especially one made with a sprouted grain bread. This bread has a high amount of fiber, and because its not made with flour, has a lower glycemic index meaning it causes less of a spike in your blood sugar. Mix it up to keep things interesting: Try deli turkey, roast beef, leftover salmon, or even cheese and veggies, Chong recommended.

6. Air-popped popcorn Another healthy, carbohydrate-rich snack is air-popped popcorn, Chong said. This snack is high in fiber, and you can sprinkle herbs or even a dash of salt on the popcorn to increase flavor.
