Fitness center focused on heart rate – Bloomington Pantagraph

BLOOMINGTON Orangetheory Fitness, a new exercise studio, wants to get all members in their fat-burning and target heart-rate zones.
The studio in Empire Crossing, 1500 E. Empire St., does that by hooking everyone to heart rate monitors and coaching each member throughout a one-hour workout, said Heather Cox, co-owner and operator. She and John Schrieffer own the franchise for Central Illinois.
"Orangetheory Fitness is straight out of the textbooks," said Cox, who has a degree in exercise science from Illinois State University. She spent five years as group fitness manager at Gold's Gym, Bloomington, before managing an Orangetheory studio in Chicago for a year.
Orangetheory has treadmills, rowers and strength stations but it isn't an open gym.
"We are group training only and people are coached for the entire hour" of endurance and strength training, Cox said.
Everyone is hooked to a heart-rate monitor "to prevent over-training and under-training," Cox said. "Our programs are designed to get everyone in their fat-burning zone for 25 to 35 minutes and we push to 84 percent or higher of our estimated maximum heart rate for 12 to 20 minutes."
Because everyone is coached to their individual zones, the six coaches are able to work with athletes and with people trying to get back into condition, Cox said.
"You do the work, you get the results. You are not getting lost," Cox said.
Eight to 10 classes are offered daily, beginning at 5 a.m., with the final class at 7:45 p.m.

Interview With YouTube Fitness Star Cassey Ho – TeenVogue.com

Cassey Ho, the brains behind Blogilates, has the kind of career every self-proclaimed fitness fiend dreams of. She started her YouTube channel in 2009 with the simple goal of helping people realize how easy and attainable it can be to stay or get fit and live a healthy lifestyle. But what began as a fun way to educate and inspire her subscribers, ultimately turned into so, so much more. Fast forward almost 8 years and 30-year-old Cassey is now running the show at her very own full-fledged fitness brand. As the founder of POP Pilates and PIIT28 and the designer of POPFLEX Active not to mention still running her personal channel it's no wonder she's been called one of the top health and fitness influencers in the world.
Despite her powerhouse reputation and perennially busy schedule, though, Casey somehow still manages to remain regularly connected with her fans via her various social platforms. And with over a million followers on Instagram and Facebook, it's quite obvious she's not only a fitness guru, but a social media maven, too. Though we happen to think her 'gram is where you can get to know Cassey the most. Her uplifting feed is flooded with everything from inspirational quotes to quickie workout tutorials and even the occasional shameless selfie. What's arguably so appealing about Cassey's overall brand is her ability to stay true to herself and to find ways that make fitness fun for everyone not just the twice-a-day gym-goer but those of us who might put working out pretty low on our priority list.
What's more? Cassey never, ever makes you feel like you should work out simply to "look better" or drop the lbs. As an eating disorder survivor, Cassey maintains a fitness-should-feel-good attitude and says the goal should be about boosting your mood and overall confidence rather than about what you see on the scale a message we obv stand behind 100%.
...Which is why we were beyond-pumped to have the opportunity to catch up with Cassey to chat about what else? but all things fitness and healthy living. From how she handles negative comments and body-shamers to her go-to post-workout snack, read on for the deep dive on our fitness guru favorite.
Teen Vogue: How do you handle cyberbullies and body-shamers?
Cassey Ho: I don't allow them to get to me. I focus on the positivity that I am sharing with the world and the amazing community that surrounds it. If the bullies can't contribute to that, they have no place in my heart or mind.
TV: Whats one reason you would give someone to work out that has nothing to do with what you look like?
Cassey Ho: Working out should make you FEEL happy, energized and motivated to take on the rest of your day. Feeling good will translate into looking good, too.
TV: How do you start your morning?
Cassey Ho: I set up my morning for success! I wake up early, make my bed, brush my teeth andpop in my Alcon DAILIES TOTAL1 contact lenses. I thendo a PIIT28 workoutand make a healthy breakfast before I head off to work at the Blogilates HQ. The momentum of my morning pushes my motivation for my day at work!
TV: Do you have a favorite snack to eat after a workout and why?
Cassey Ho: It's super important to fuel up with a balance of healthy carbs, protein and fats to refuel your body from all the hard work you just accomplished. An easy way to do this is with a smoothie! I love doing a Peanut Butter and Banana almond milk smoothie with spinach!
TV: What's one thing everyone should do for their wellness routine this spring?
Cassey Ho: De-clutter and focus on making positive changes that improve your overall wellness! I love organizing and refreshing my house because I find that eliminating unnecessary physical things frees up space in my mind as well.An example of a seemingly small but impactful change Ive made to improve my overall wellness is switching to Alcon DAILIES TOTAL1 contact lenses. Vision is an often overlooked part of fitness and staying in shape. Like the right apparel, footwear and diet, it is important to have the right contact lenses because they arecrucial to your performance.
TV: Any must-have equipment for turning your dorm /dorm room into a gym?
Cassey Ho: Get a yoga mat! Since you have limited space, all you need is a mat to get a killer workout in. I just released some beautiful new styles in thepopflexactive.comshop. So much color! Color makes me happy 🙂
TV: How do you stay motivated when youre feeling lousy?
Cassey Ho: Let yourself take a moment to recharge and recollect your thoughts. Being negative and feeling down won't get you anywhere. Getting outside or talking with a friend is the best way to boost your mood and get yourself motivated!

Shagonaby started exercising at Lakeshore Fitness back in October, and has since been working towards a healthy lifestyle. The last time Leigh Ann chatted with her Shagonaby was already feeling theimprovements in her health and physical activity, now she says she's seeing physical results.
After five months of exercising at Lakeshore Fitness, she's lost three inches on her hips, two inches on her waist, 3 percent body fat, and is eight pounds lighter.
"I love the fact that I can see that progress and know that I can reach another goal and another goal," Shagonaby said.
More improvements Shagonaby has seen is her ability to get up in the morning. Despite her arthritis in her knee, she has more strength to get up and move because of all the muscle she's built up over time.
"It's not always a number, you have to look at the whole picture," Shagonaby said. "I feel so much better, only positivehas just come from all of this. There's no negative to it at all!"

Planet Fitness coming to Butte and locations throughout Montana – Montana Standard

Months after opening a Planet Fitness in Helena, Dave Leon of Albany, New York, says hes bringing the New Hampshire-based franchise to Butte in addition to four other new locations throughout the state.
Leon, who has been a franchise owner with Planet Fitness since 2004, told The Montana Standard by phone Wednesday hes in the process of bidding on two properties in the Mining City, one of which is the old Hastings books and music store, 2307 Harrison Ave. He declined to name the other potential location but said both properties were between 20,000 and 23,000 square feet.
Should everything go according to plan, Leon said, the Butte Planet Fitness should open January 2018 and be similar to the Helena location, which boasts more than 100 cardio machines among other fitness equipment.
The gym will employ 20 to 25 people with four full-time employees and one manager and will be open 24 hours a day Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Leon said.
Basic memberships will be $10 per month while Black Card memberships will be $21.99 per month and include access to tanning, massage, and hydrotherapy among other amenities. All members will have free access to certified instructors.
Leon also has locations planned for Great Falls, Billings, Bozeman, and Missoula; the latter is slated to open in 30 days.
He said he was hesitant at first to open in smaller markets like Helena and Butte, but so far the Helena Planet Fitness has been generating interest and given him confidence that a Butte location can be successful.
A 30-year veteran of the fitness industry, Leon plans on relocating to the Big Sky State. He said hes always loved the pristine landscapes and wide open spaces of Montana and is an avid outdoorsman.
Leon has a development agreement with Planet Fitness for a territory that includes Wyoming and Montana, and he also has current and planned locations in Colorado and North Dakota.
It may seem like a risk to dive headfirst into franchise ownership, but this isnt Leons first time at the rodeo when it comes to owning Planet Fitness locations.
(The intermountain west) is a market Ive been working on for three years, said Leon, who owned 20 franchises in New York, which he has since sold in order to embark on his new enterprise.
Leon said when he started working with Planet Fitness in 2004, the company had just nine locations and was an industry outlier. It offered a judgment free atmosphere that was open to people of all shapes and sizes. Instead of juice bars and body builders, Leon said, Planet Fitness was filled with mere mortals mothers, grandmothers, and everyone in between.
It was an unusual model, Leon said, noting that the company managed to tap into a niche market and now has over 1,300 locations.
We go after first-time fitness users, Leon said. Weve created a very comfortable, non-intimidating environment.
The world judges you. We dont at Planet Fitness, he continued, staying on brand with the company credo.
He added that Planet Fitness extends its company culture to its charitable efforts.
Last year the company gave $1.5 million to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America and has collaborated with the organization on an anti-bullying campaign called the Judgment Free Generation. Leon said he makes contributions to local chapters in areas where he owns gyms.

Congdon: Elders should spring forward with exercise – Columbus Telegram

We have sprung our clocks ahead an hour. Many spring birds have returned. Some trees, shrubs and plants are beginning to bud.
Spring is in the air and the calendar will indicate it soon as well. With spring in mind, its time to shake off the winter blahs, grab your yoga mat or lace up the running shoes and get to moving.
Some older people may have slowed down in the winter months; however, experts say its important to stay active all year long, especially for elders. Some proven benefits as a result of exercise are lower blood pressure; improved sleep and mood; less fatigue, joint pain and constipation; and better weight control.
But, its never too late so, start to get more active this spring. Here are some tips for elders to get in shape:
Walking: Climate control and even surfaces make mall (or large store) walking a great way to stay in shape. Many malls even have walking clubs.
Aerobics/yoga: Sign up for aerobics or yoga classes at a senior, community or wellness center, or local YMCA.
Exercise buddy/group: Get an exercise buddy or join an active group. The support is helpful for staying on track, especially if you dont feel like exercising & it helps to have someone checking on you.
Swimming: heck into the local YMCA, community colleges, fitness centers or gyms many will have times, and perhaps classes, specifically for elders.
Use stairs: If its safe to do so, take the stairs. Stair climbing uses the same muscles necessary for keeping your balance while rising from a chair, so it is important to keep these muscles strong.
Make little changes: Parking farther away from church, or a store entrance and walking the extra distance (when its safe to do so). Every movement helps, even the little ones.
Dancing: Ballroom dancing improves flexibility and balance, square dancing and aerobic dancing improves cardiovascular fitness. Check out classes in your area; or dances you can attend.
Exercise programs: Find exercise programs on TV, DVD, on a computer program or phone ap to make it simpler to exercise at home. Experts suggest elders first check with their doctor before starting any exercise routine. Remember to warm up before, and cool down & stretch after any exercise activity to lower risk for injury.
Other tips for successful exercising include:
wearing comfortable shoes with rubber grips to prevent falls,
wearing sunscreen if your exercises take you outdoors,
drinking water to stay hydrated,
making increased physical activity part of a daily routine, and
setting an exercise goal for cardiovascular fitness and resistance (strengthening) exercise.
Being active is important to healthy aging. Remember not all exercise has to be organized, nor does it have to be viewed as a chore. Choose to move safely as often as you can and choose to start your day with a positive attitude whenever possible.
Rachelle Congdon is the senior living counselor at The Heritage at Meridian Gardens.

Foothill Village seniors enjoy fitness fun – Calaveras Enterprise

The residents of the Foothill Village senior living community in Angels Camp have a variety of physical fitness activities they can participate in, all under the humorous and watchful eye of longtime fitness instructor JoAnne Jo Ingram.
Throughout the week, residents can choose cross-training with seven exercise stations, yoga or the Sit and Fit exercise class.
I enjoy it very much, said Betty Kane, 86, of her participation in the Sit and Fit program.
During the winter months, the classes are held inside. As the weather warms, residents exercise outdoors under the facilitys grand portico.
Ingram has been with Foothill Village for 16 years. She carefully incorporates stretching, breathing, light weights and cardiovascular exercises into her Sit and Fit program, all combined with music that brings back fun memories for the residents.
I remember this song from high school, said Mary Buchanan, 93, of the Glenn Miller song String of Pearls.
The residents, not shy, broke into song when Daisy and Wild About Mary were played.
Throughout the program, Ingram tells fun stories and has the residents sing and count.
If you arent panting after this exercise, then you didnt do it right, she says, explaining how incorporating the use of the lungs and deep breathing is advantageous to good health.
Carol Klemstein, 68, a temporary resident recovering from hip replacement surgery, enjoys taking part in the various programs.
I enjoy everything here; everyone is so cheerful, she said as she carefully followed Ingrams exercise instructions.
Though the exercise programs are focused on more ambulatory residents, there are also fitness programs available for those who cannot move as well, and for those suffering from memory loss.

Fast Weight Loss – Can You Really Lose Weight Fast & Safe?

I get emails all the time from people asking about fast weight loss. Is it possible? Can it be done? And if so, what diet, workout, product or supplement will make it happen the fastest?
These types of questions usually come with some kind of story. You know, something like: I just want to lose weight fast. Ill do WHATEVER I have to do! Im tired of trying things and watching the scale barely move. I just want to know the fastest way to do it already!
Sometimes I even get my personal favorite story of all, a story that never fails to make me laugh. The type of story that comes from a man or woman who needs to lose weight fast because of some type of event that is coming up very soon. For example Hey, I have a wedding to go to in 3 weeks and I need to lose like 50 pounds fast, what can I do? They really expect me to write back with some magical method that can make these types of crazy results take place.
And in the month before summer, I ALWAYS get at least a few dozen emails from people telling me the same hilarious story Summer is around the corner and I want to look good in my bathing suit this year. I need to lose 80 million pounds as fast as possible. What should I do? Sure, 80 million pounds is an exaggeration, but you get my point.
People often need or want to lose weight fast because some kind of rapidly approaching event has placed a deadline on their weight loss goal. In my replies to emails this dumb, I often suggest that this person try to find a time machine, because unless they can travel back in time and start losing weight earlier, theyre screwed. The impossible goal theyve set just can NOT be met.
As you can imagine, their replies back to me usually include a term that starts with an F and ends with a you. The truth hurts, I guess.
Now, I understand why I get emails like this. We all want a quick fix. No one wants to workout and eat right and get their results slowly. They want it to happen as quickly as possible with as little effort as possible. I completely understand. Hell, I wish I could lose fat 10 times faster than I actually can, too.
The problem is, the type of fast weight loss most people are seeking just isnt realistically possible. Even worse is that attempting to make it happen and (always) failing to do it is not only potentially extremely dangerous for your health (both physically and mentally), its also extremely detrimental to your chances of EVER successfully losing that weight.
What this all means is that most people are chasing a goal that A) cant happen, and B) is just preventing them from getting the results they want.
In order to fix this problem, we need to get to the root of it. Why do we all think we can lose weight fast if we cant?
Well, this one is easy. There are tons of terrible sources of diet and fitness information out there that are constantly putting the idea of impossibly fast weight loss in our minds. Why? Usually to sell some crappy product. This could be a diet book or program of some kind, a fat loss pill or supplement, or some sort of fitness machine or exercise equipment.
And they all make pretty compelling arguments for why these amazingly rapid results are not only possible, but why what theyre selling is the ONLY way to make it happen. Take for example before and after pictures.
Before and after pictures are one of the most common and effective ways to sell a diet or fitness product of any kind. Just show a picture of someone who looks like crap, say they used this product, and then show a picture of them looking amazing and implying they transformed their body and lost all of that weight in a super short period of time. And taaadaaa, countless people get their credit cards ready.
I mean, these pictures have to be completely legit, right? They cant be lying. These are good people who just want to help you lose weight fast, they would never lie just to get your money right? Ha, thats cute. The real truth is, most before and after pictures showing fast weight loss results are total bullshit.
You know how a picture is worth a thousand words? Well, in this case, every one of those words is a lie. Heres a few examples:
And in the VERY rare cases where someone actually did lose weight fast (although not quite as fast as most people hope for, just faster than average), sometimes the company selling the product lets you know you probably wont be able to get the same weight loss results. Heres what I mean
There are commercials on TV for all kinds of gimmick weight loss diets and pills and products that all promise fast weight loss. After lying to you about all kinds of things and using myths that are proven not to really be possible (like spot reduction) to make their product seem amazing, they begin to show you actual people who supposedly used this product, machine, diet, pill, or supplement and were able to lose weight fast.
As they show you this person, theyll usually be telling you their story. You know I hated my body. I tried everything but nothing ever worked UNTIL NOW!!!! I lost X pounds using [insert useless crap here] in just X WEEKS and look at me now!! As funny as it already is, here comes the real best part.
At this point in the commercial, if you put on your glasses, walk all the way up to your TV, bend down, and put your face 2 inches from the screen. if you look close enough, in tiny letters that you can just barely read, you will see writing that says something like: These results are not typical. No shit?
I swear I am not making this up. Most weight loss commercials do this (apparently only some of their lies require a clarification by law). Sometimes it says these results are not typical and sometimes it might say Just like every body is different, so are their results. You may not get these results. Or it will just say something that basically means
The person we are showing you right now who was able to lose weight fast is a VERY RARE EXCEPTION. In fact, 99% of the people who use our product wont get results anywhere near as good. So, basically, we are lying to you. We want your money, so we are using every trick, lie and scam we can come up with to get you to buy our crappy product. Dont expect anything as good as this to happen to you. We just wanted to show this person so you think you will get their results, even though you really wont. We are dicks. But who cares, because we got your money. We laugh at you because you think fast weight loss is possible. Now that we have this statement on the commercial somewhere, you cant use the product, fail to get quick results, and then try to sue us for false advertising. Sucks for you, doesnt it?
Again, its a small exaggeration, but you get the point. Youll often see something similar at the very bottom of websites and magazine ads for similar diet and fitness products, diets, pills and supplements. Its all just their way of hiding the fact that the ultra fast results they want you to believe are possible really arent.
Fast weight loss in the form most people wish for just doesnt exist, unless of course your idea of fast is losing 1 or 2 pounds a week. There is no machine, no special type of cardio, no special diet, no special workout, no special pill, no special anything that will allow you to lose weight fast in a way that is safe, healthy and truly realistic. Speaking of being realistic
As I explain in my article about How To Lose Weight, the ideal rate of weight loss is between 0.5-2lbs per week for most people. The more fat you have to lose, the faster you can (and probably should) lose it. The less fat you have to lose, the slower you should lose it.
Why is this speed so ideal and recommended by virtually every nutrition expert who isnt trying to sell you something? Well, besides it being most ideal in terms of health, its also what is proven to work best in terms of success rate.
What I mean is, trying to lose weight any faster than this would require too extreme of a caloric deficit for most people to sustain. Youll be in the most hungry, unhappy, tired, annoyed and all around crappy state possible, and the potential for muscle loss (and other health issues) will be at its highest. Does this scenario sound ideal for diet adherence or long term success? No, because its not.
On the other hand, losing fat slower than this recommended rate would be extremely easy to do, but unbearable to stick with because of how slow it would be happening.
However, losing weight exactly as fast as I just recommended you should is the perfect middle ground. Safe, effective, easy to manage and sustain while still being fast enough to satisfy our need to actually see results. This is the rate of weight loss that allows more people to successfully lose weight and permanently keep it off than ANY other.
So, while we all wish we could lose weight fast, the sad truth is that we cant at least no where near as fast as most of us unrealistically hope we could. The thing is, all of the time, effort and money you are spending searching for a way to make fast weight loss happen is just a HUGE waste.
If you put half of the time and effort youre putting into finding a quick fix into actually eating right and working out correctly, you probably would have lost the weight by now.
So, let this be the minute you stop looking for something that only exists in the lies weight loss companies are telling to get your money, and start doing what needs to be done to lose it at the ideal rate you should be.
In the end, this is the way that will end up working the fastest, because its the only way that works.
