Iredell Memorial’s Pulmonary Rehab Center helps Dan Pardue improve quality of life – Statesville Record & Landmark

For decades, Dan Pardue has taught singers in Iredell County how to control their breathing to make music. Now 50 years into his career as a vocal instructor, Pardue is a student again - learning to live and breathe with a degenerative lung disease.

In 2015, the Statesville resident became the first patient to enter Iredell Health Systems pulmonary rehab program. Through education and exercise, he and dozens of others with lung disorders have been able to maintain their quality of life.

Pardue entered rehab after he was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, a disease marked by scarring of the lungs. Symptoms include difficulty breathing, which gets worse over time. Pardue believes rehab has helped to stabilize his condition and given him tools to manage the disease.

Because Im a vocal teacher, I have worked with breathing all my life, but I learned new things in this class that I never knew, said Pardue.

The Pulmonary Rehab Center on the campus of Iredell Memorial Hospital helps patients with COPD, asthma, obstructive lung disease and other respiratory issues. It typically includes an 18-week session, beginning with an evaluation and setting goals for each patient.

Our main goal is for them to do more at home with less shortness of breath and to be more independent, said exercise specialist Sabrina Melchor. A lot of them depend on a spouse or someone else in the home to do things like household chores. Just getting them to be more self-sufficient is a big deal.

Lower respiratory disease is the third leading cause of death in North Carolina, behind heart disease and cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Programs like Iredell Health Systems pulmonary rehab can help patients improve their odds.

For respiratory therapist Michelle Jones, helping Pardue has been especially rewarding. He gave voice lessons to her sons when they were young.

I have known Dan for many years and it was tough to see him like that, said Jones. He had difficulty taking a few steps. He wasnt on enough oxygen. We helped adjust his oxygen levels in keeping with his

doctors orders. Now he exercises for almost 45 minutes to an hour. He doesnt miss a day if he can help it. Hes consistent and thats what it takes, consistency.

Pardue graduated from the rehab program, but he hasnt stopped working to manage his health. Like others who have completed the program, Pardue comes to the center as often as four days a week for Medically Supervised Exercise Therapy. He is usually there on the treadmill with his oxygen tank and his wife by his side.

The exercise part was so good, when I started the program I asked, can my wife do this? So now, we come here together.

Medically Supervised Exercise Therapy is available to anyone in the community with a prescription from their doctor. Participants can work out under the guidance of the rehab center staff, who can answer questions and monitor health conditions.

Getting the most out of life

Pardue continues to give voice lessons and directs the choir at Statesvilles First ARP church. With help from his doctors and the staff at Iredells pulmonary rehab center, he is determined to get the most out of life.

This is an illness that nobody would want, said Pardue. It is limiting but Im still directing choir. We just had our 80th birthday. Ive slowed down the way anybody would at that age would I suppose, but I enjoy life a great deal.

To find out more about pulmonary rehabilitation programs or Medically Supervised Exercise Therapy, call the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Center at 704-878-4558.

Futures preparing to ‘Get UP and Get Moving’ – Bradford Era

It will be a day of doing simple yet effective exercises and learning the benefits of drinking water when individuals at Futures Rehabilitation Center in Bradford participate in the Celebrating Abilities! event March 22.

The event, slated for 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., is sponsored by Futures, Evergreen Elm, the YWCA Bradford and Northwest Health Connections. Activities are open to all individuals and staff at Futures and Evergreen Elm and will include training in dental hygiene, self breast exams and diabetes information. Give-aways and drawings will also take place.

Debbie Price, executive director of Evergreen Elm, a residential agency for people with mental disabilities, said the theme of this years celebration is Get Up and Get Moving. The focus will not only be on exercise but also on drinking healthy beverages. This will be carried out in the celebration when fresh, cold water is served with the pizza and cake lunch.

Our motivation is to get up and moving, but were also hosting a nurse (Tim Juliano) from Warren who will do a big segment during two morning sessions on not drinking soda pop, Price said. So were giving them water this time; that will be an interesting lunch.

Jason Nuzzo, exercise physiologist at Bradford Regional Medical Centers Upbeat, said he will lead low-impact exercise during an afternoon session. The demonstrations will include arm movements that can be done sitting in a chair or marching-in-place regimens that can be conducted anywhere.

They want me to do some chair exercises with some of the individuals, Nuzzo said. Ive been looking at some routines they can do. You can actually get a pretty good workout depending on how much marching in place and how much arm movement you do.

Nuzzo said individuals can do all of his exercises or marching in place to upbeat music.

They can also do it to the pace of a slower song, he added.

Nuzzo said he knows a number of people who work at Futures or live at Evergreen Elm as many of them attend Upbeat for exercise programs.

Were looking forward to having a lot of fun, Nuzzo remarked.

+4

Pat Ryan, director of operations at Futures, said the event, which celebrates the abilities of everyone at the sheltered workshop, is very much anticipated by the individuals and staff.

Our awareness day is a celebration of abilities and a reminder that people with disabilities are an integral part of our community, Ryan said. People with disabilities are neighbors, volunteers, parishioners, workers, customers just like everyone else. This years event is centered around healthy living and safety awareness.

On an unrelated topic, Price gave an update on plans that are underway for the Elm Street group home rebuilding project. The historic home was destroyed by fire last April due to an

to an electric malfunction with wiring. Price said groundbreaking for the construction of a new home is expected to take place in the near future.

Were finishing up with the zoning requirements and as soon as thats done well be groundbreaking in May, Price said. We have architectural renderings on Facebook. We expect it will be a good six-month process to complete and we hope to be in by fall.

Everybody has been so kind and generous, but the project is so expensive because of the handicapped accessibility I want to do, Price added. It will be about $1.2 million for just the building.

How HUM Helped Me Get My Health Back On Track (And Lose 15 Lbs) – MadameNoire

The last time I talked to you all about my weight, I confessed that Id regained some pounds. Unfortunately, for the rest of 2016 things got much worse before they got better and about half of my hard work went down the drain. Its not something Im proud of, but after assessing some of theways I went about losing weight the wrong way the last timeand forgiving myself for the regain, at the beginning of 2017 I decided to get my ish back together.

While I wouldnt be relying on a trainer this time because I needed to be more accountable to myself I did implement some of the practices my trainer taught me, one of which was the benefit of supplements. And no I dont mean gimmicky lose weight fast supplements, I meanproducts that provide nutrients to help your body perform at its best and boost weight loss efforts that there are no substitutes for: exercise and clean eating.

Because Id reaped such good benefits from HUM Nutritions Big Chill pill, I decided to explore what options the brand had for my health goals. Thats when I came across Ripped Rooster andSkinny Bird. Ripped Rooster is a thermogenic fat burnerthat contains 7-keto, a natural metabolite that has been shown to eliminate and reverse the decrease in metabolic rate that can happen after dieting. Because I was coming off of a year of losing 92 pounds, I wanted to give my metabolism a boost and I was well aware of the benefits of Green Tea in aiding weight loss, which this supplement also contains.

As attractive as the word skinny is in the name of the second supplement, what really excited me about this productwas its promise to not just curve your appetite, but reduce stress eating. Ive told you all more times than I care to think about how emotional eating has repeatedly been my downfall, so I was definitely game to try something created specifically with that issue in mind. Plus the pill helps boost metabolism and control blood sugar, the latter of which Id been suspecting I had issues with because I hadnt been eating on a regular schedule and certainly not healthy foods.

Let me tell you, the difference when I take Skinny Bird and when I dont is palpable. As I type this, Im slightly struggling to finish a small smoothie that Ive been working on for nearly an hour. Monday I didnt take the supplement and downed the same medium size smoothie and was ready or a snack within another hour. Its unfortunate that I have a hard time remembering to take this supplement 30 minutes before breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as directed, because Id likely see even more benefits if I did.

Nevertheless, I am 15 pounds lighter than I was when the year began and I feel 15 times better than I did in 2016, and not just because Im smaller. In addition to the weight loss aids above, I also resumed taking Omega-3s. Fish Oil has fatty acids that help maintain brain and heart health and, being overweight and working out daily at high intensities, I didnt want to play with the latter. I also appreciate that OMG! Omega the Great doesnt have a fishy aftertaste.

I take these supplements in addition to a daily multivitamin, which you should take regardless of any attempt to lose weight, and B-12 to assist my energy levels. Its a concoction that has worked wonders for me so far, but the key word with everything I said here issupplement. None of these pills is a substitute for healthy eating or hard work, they simply make the pay off for doing so that much greater.

BTW, you can follow my weight loss journey do-over more closely here.

Study: More Americans getting fatter, fewer trying to lose weight – Washington Times

The number of obese Americans is increasing while the number of those trying to lose weight is decreasing, according to study published this month by the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Titled Change in Percentages of Adults With Overweight or Obesity Trying to Lose Weight, 1988-2014, the study says that carrying excess weight has become socially acceptable in the U.S.

Because more people are satisfied with being overweight, fewer are motivated to slim down, says the study, which was conducted at the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health at Georgia Southern.

You would hope that as being overweight and/or obese become more well-known risk factors for a variety of conditions and diseases, more people would attempt to avoid that risk, Kassandra Snook, the studys lead author.

I think the results of this research are very significant in showing that the obesity epidemic is continuing, and will continue to worsen as long as no weight loss attempts are made, Ms. Snook said.

Obesity has been linked to a number of maladies, including diabetes and heart disease.

Maya Karin told to lose weight for Munafik 2 – Star2.com

Aftermuch speculation, director Syamsul Yusof has confirmed he will be filming the sequel to Munafik and he has found his leading lady award-winning actress Maya Karin.

Im very excited to be a part of Munafik 2. Ive always wanted to work with Skop Production. When (producer) Datuk Yusof Haslam called to offer me the part, I said yes right away, said Maya, 37, during an interview in Kuala Lumpur recently.

Released in 2016, Munafik is a horror film which focuses on how Ustaz Adam (played by Syamsul) tries to help Maria (Nabila Huda), a woman possessed by a malevolent spirit. The film earned RM19mil from box office collection in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei. It also won the Malaysia Film Festival award for Best Malaysian Film.

In Munafik 2, Maya will take on the role of Sakinah, a poor single mother living in an isolated village.

Syamsul, 32, revealed that the plot for Munafik 2 involves Ustaz Adam going head to head with a man and his misguided religious teachings. Sakinah will be affected by an evil spirit linked to the man.

Its a role that Maya has been looking to add to her resume. The actress, who is synonymous with horror offerings like Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam, Waris Jari Hantu and Jwanita, wants to break away from playing the role of the scary one.

If they said I have to play a hantu or a pontianak again, I would be a little bit disappointed. How many times do I want to keep doing the same thing? This role is a perfect mix. Now, I get to be the one who is scared instead. I really want that. Something different, said Maya.

However, the actress has to go on a diet to achieve the look of a struggling parent. So its just rice, salted fish and ulam for me for the next two weeks!

Maya who has scaled back on acting projects in recent years also revealed that shes nervous about going back on set.Im a little bit worried because I heard Syamsul is a serious person on set. I used to act with Bront (Palarae) and Remy (Ishak) all the time and now for this movie, its with people Ive never worked with before, she said.

Syamsul announced that Nasir Bilal Khan, Fauzi Nawawi and Mawi (of Akademi Fantasia fame) will also star in Munafik 2.Shooting starts on March 20 and the movie is scheduled for a 2018 release.

When word got out that Maya is picked to star in Munafik 2, there was chatterthat she would be replacing Nabila. But thats not the case, said Maya.

I think its confusing to the audience if they read in the news that Im replacing her. I really have to stress that Im not replacing anyone. (Nabilas) character died in the previous movie. Im playing an entirely different character, she explained.

Apart from Munafik 2, Maya will be involved in another acting project but the actress declined to reveal details. She will also be performing at Istana Budaya in a concert with Awie in April.

Jefferson County woman inspires more than 10000 people to lose weight on low-carb diet – WHAG

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - In a state that ranks second in obesity, losing weight means a lot more than just dropping dress sizes to West Virginians.

I had to go on disability and quit my job of 24 years and I basically felt like I lost my purpose in life, Michelle Dorsey said.

After being a serial dieter her entire life, Dorsey lost 110 pounds after starting this low-carbohydrate diet.

Now, because of these wonderful people and I get to reach out to people and change their lives, I feel like I have my purpose back. I have my life back, Dorsey said.

It was designed by Dr. Eric Westman, who co-authored the Atkins diet.

A Jefferson County womanhas inspired more than 10,000 people to start the program and drop hundreds of pounds.

Melanie Miller said the diet focuses on cutting the carbohydrates out for those who are carbohydrate-intolerant.

This is people who have metabolic conditions, diabetes, pre-diabetes, maybe they have PCOS or endometriosis and because they have those conditions, their bodies cannot process sugar, flour and starch, Miller said.

Dieters eliminate certain fruits, vegetables, and starches, which typically help others who are able to process carbohydrates lose weight, but it only packs on the pounds for those who are carbohydrate-intolerant.

However, that doesnt mean dieters cant indulge on some of their favorite foods.

Lance Paul lost 33 pounds since he began the diet on January 16th of this year.

I can still eat an entire prime rib with vegetables on the side, I wouldve never thought I could eat that, Paul said.

Dwain Dawson has lost so much weight since he began on Memorial Day of 2016 that he and his wife can both fit in his old pair of pants.

These are a size 50 pants and I am in a pair of 34s today, Dawson said.

However, dieters said best of all they are not alone on their weight loss journey.

Bill Nicewarner has lost 45 pounds since he began in May of 2016.

If somebody is feeling weak, all they have to do is send out a message and everybody is there to support everybody else, Nicewarner said.

Melanie Miller will be teaching others how to start this low-carbohydrate diet at the Clarion in Shepherdstown on April 8th at 1 p.m.

Which Diets Are Most Effective According to Science? – Huffington Post

Which diets are most effective, according to science? originally appeared on Quora - the place to gain and share knowledge, empowering people to learn from others and better understand the world.

The obvious question about what diets work best, is are theyeffective for what? Im going to assume we mean most effective at helping us achieve and/or maintain a healthy weight and maximize our health in doing so.

I think diets that make us leaner and healthier are the diets that remove those components of the diet that cause us to get fat and cause the chronic diseases that associate with obesity and diabetes. As I clearly believe the worst offenders there are added sugars (sucrose and HFCS) and then refined, easily digestible carbohydrates, then the most effective diets are the ones that remove the sugars and high-GI carbs. And diets that work, regardless of the fat content, do so because they remove these carbohydrates. Indeed, by merely trying to avoid added sugars as part of a healthy diet, that means well have to avoid virtually all of the processed foods in the grocery stores, which means well be avoiding a significant amount of the other processed carbs, virtually all of the vegetable oils, etc. Well be healthier and we wont even know why or whether I was right that the sugar was the problem.

The flip side of that is my believe that if a diet like Dean Ornishs very low-fat diet works, its primarily because it, too, removes the sugars and white flour (for the same reason I think any diet should). If vegan and vegetarian diets work, or when they work, its for this reason as well.

That said. my reading of the existing clinical trial on diets is that the ideal diets for most of us (who arent necessarily world class athletes trying to enhance their performance) are indeed low-carb, high-fat or at least some variation like the paleo diet. I recognize that these diets will raise LDL cholesterol or LDL particle number in some proportion of the people who eat them, but because they seem to do such an effective job at resolving insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome, I would bet that theyre more than worth the trade-off. (Again, if Im wrong, I apologize.)

Ketogenic diets, in which carbs are restricted almost entirely and replaced by fat, clearly have remarkable clinical efficacy in resolving a host of disease states, from obesity and diabetes to epilepsy and perhaps other neurological problems as well. I expect theyd even go a long way to preventing cancer and dementia, but thats speculation and has yet to be rigorously tested in any meaningful way.

Diets Don’t Work: Marginal gains – Maidenhead Advertiser

The term marginal gains became familiar during the 2012 Olympic games in London. As team GB demolished the world, head coach Dave Brailsford talked about marginal gains as being one of the keys to their success.

At the elite end of the spectrum, making athletes fitter, stronger and faster becomes increasingly difficult. The law of diminishing returns means that the better someone gets, the harder they have to train for smaller gains; until the point is reached where no matter how hard you train, you will only get a tiny bit better, if at all. So how can you improve? How can you improve so much that you beat every other team in the world. Marginal gains.

Instead of focusing on one seemingly obvious but difficult goal like making an athlete fitter marginal gains instead looks to make small improvements to many small areas of the sport. Although some of these areas and changes may seem inconsequential, added together they are the difference between bronze and gold.

At British cycling the athletes were taught how to wash their hands properly. This means less infections and colds; so more training time. They started wearing heated trousers before and between races to ensure their muscles were at optimum temperature to perform. They changed the shape of their helmets. They got slightly lighter wheels. Each small, marginal gain might only be tiny 0.2% perhaps. But added together they equal much more. Enough to win. By applying this theory to health and weight loss, what may seem an impossible task can be made easy.

Physics dictates that to lose 2lbs a week, we need to eat 500 calories less than we need every day. Thats a lot - more than a whole meal. But instead of just trying to eat a lot less, by making small changes to both input (food, drink) and output (metabolic rate, exercise) this large amount can be chipped away into achievable amounts.

Marginal gains will help you to burn more calories with less energy. Get a smart watch that counts your steps or tells you to get up from your office chair every hour. Thats 50 calories a day burned. Walk around the office when on the phone; thats another 30 a day. Use a basket at the supermarket, not a trolley. And park further away. Thats another 50 calories a day. Do some short, challenging strength training. Even once a week will be enough to boost your metabolic rate by 25 calories a day. Do some very short, but intense intervals. A couple of these a week gets you 50 calories a day.

Already those small changes add up to 205 calories a day. Now you only have to eat 295 calories less per day to lose those 2lbs.

Applying the theory of marginal gains to food works too! Get some smaller plates and bowls. -50 calories a day. Drink more water, making you feel fuller; -50 calories a day. Include protein in every meal, making you feel fuller; -50 calories a day. Swap wine for prosecco in the evening. Thats another 50. Look at the menu before eating out so that you can make a slightly smarter choice; another 95 calories saved. 295 calories saved. Add in the extra calories burned, and thats your 500.

So try to make small, achievable changes in lots of different areas to make a big change in your health and weight. Marginal gains will help you get your own gold medal.
