Google says crowdsourced data makes for better fitness apps – Engadget

Head of Health and Fitness Apps for Google Play, Mary Liz McCurdy, said in an interview at SXSW that applications in the category aren't just loggers anymore. Instead, she says, they've become much more beneficial to users by turning their data into deeper experiences, which can translate to things like personalized recommendations on how to eat healthier, sleep better and have effective workouts. That's what you see with apps like Runtastic and Nike+ Training Club.
"Now everyone can work out with a personalized coach, whether it be a real coach or in most cases a robo coach," says McCurdy. "People are willing to pay and they're willing to spend a lot of time working out, so these [apps] are all just different pocket-sized personal trainers that continue to improve and get more adaptive and smart with time." Still, despite how valuable these types of apps have become to people, she says they're not meant to replace a human trainer or a doctor. "This is augmenting your experience if you actually have a condition. That doesn't mean that you do not need to go to the doctor, it just means you're an informed citizen. You're in control of your health."
McCurdy believes it's helpful for users to connect with like-minded people through social aspects, which she says wouldn't be possible without crowdsourced data. "The apps give you the knowledge that you need to make informed decisions," she says, "and live your best, healthy life."

CHEERS & JEERS: The best and worst of the week for March 13 – Niagara Gazette

CHEERS
STORM RESPONSE: Hats off to the highway and forestry workers, volunteer and professional firefighters, law enforcement officers and private utility workers who responded so quickly and effectively to the fallout of the windstorm that tore through Niagara County earlier this week. Despite the extent of the mess and the damage, within 24 hours major roads were cleared of felled trees and power lines, and most residents who lost power had it restored. According to Steve Brady, regional spokesman for National Grid, the storm hit with such gale force that in some places, whole electrical systems have to be rebuilt. Considering that, its safe to say our community came out of the storm relatively unscathed, and we have a small army of first responders to thank for that.
PUMPED UP: Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center officials proudly unveiled the facilitys newest addition this past week about $100,000 worth of upgrades and equipment added to the Center of Niagaras Cardiopulmonary Rehab Facility located at the hospitals Heart Center on 10th Street. The all new, fully handicapped-accessible facility features 18 new pieces of workout equipment. It allows post-operative cardiac patients, and those with other diagnoses, to follow individually tailored exercise programs. It also offers a wellness exercise program to the general public and, in conjunction with YMCA Buffalo Niagara, fitness classes for people with special needs. ... we like to think of it as Club Med comes to Tenth Street, quipped Memorial President & CEO Joseph A. Ruffolo during a ceremony last week. It doesnt sound like hes too far off. In addition, rehabilitation services at the Heart Center of Niagara will be featured as an important part of the Million Hearts Project, a cardiac health and wellness campaign that will kick off at Memorial today.
REVISED ORDER: President Trumps revised executive order on immigration provides some relief to the Niagara Frontier. The original order called for biometric checks fingerprint or iris scanning of all travelers at U.S. border crossings including the bridges in Niagara Falls and Lewiston, raising the possibility of processing delays bringing New York-Ontario trade to a screeching halt. U.S. Rep. Chris Collins, R-Clarence, minced no words when he pointed out to the administration the potentially devastating economic consequences of such a broad border-security order, and the revised executive order appears to have taken his warning into account. Collins says the order now calls for a tracking system for in-scope travelers only and that label does not apply to citizens and permanent residents of the U.S. and Canada.

TIPPED OFF: Retention of an expensive, professional crisis communications firm by the board of trustees of Niagara County Community College, a public entity, seems a bit much. The hiring followed recent disclosures of internal emails by college administration regarding the development of the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute. The trustees, who are the overseers of NCCC, should know well enough whats going on to be able to answer questions from the media and the public themselves. If they cant or dont want to, why are they trustees? Perhaps the board should hire Tipping Point Communications to oversee the college, too? Local government watchdog Rosemary Warren hit the nail on the head when she addressed the trustees at their meeting last week and let em know, they own some of the blame for the colleges current clouded circumstance.

As we continue to celebrate National Nutrition Month during March, consider some of the basic tips to share with your family and friends in support of healthier eating and safe physical activities to enhance our quality of life.
Tips for Healthy Eating
To help you stay on track with your healthy eating plan, follow these tips:
Have three servings of vitamin D-fortified milk, yogurt or cheese.(Photo: loooby, Getty Images/iStockphoto)
Do not skip meals. Skipping meals may cause your metabolism to slow down or lead you to eat more high-calorie, high-fat foods at your next meal or snack Select high-fiber foods like whole-grain breads and cereals, beans, vegetables and fruits. They may help keep you regular and lower your risk for chronic diseases, such as coronary heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Choose lean beef, turkey breast, fish, or chicken with the skin removed to lower the amount of fat and calories in your meals. As you age, your body needs fewer calories, especially if you are not very active. Have three servings of vitamin D-fortified low-fat/fat-free milk, yogurt, or cheese every day. Milk products are high in calcium and vitamin D and help keep your bones strong as you age. If you have trouble digesting or do not like milk products, try reduced-lactose milk products, or soy-based beverages, or tofu. You can also talk to your health care provider about taking a calcium and vitamin D supplement. Choose foods fortified with vitamin B12. Many adults over the age of 50 have difficulty absorbing adequate amounts of this vitamin. Therefore, they should get this nutrient through fortified foods, such as breakfast cereals or from a dietary supplement. Talk with your health care provider to ensure that you are consuming enough vitamin B12. Keep nutrient-rich snacks like dried apricots, whole-wheat crackers, peanut butter, low-fat cheese, and low-sodium soup on hand. Eat only small amounts of such foods as dried apricots and peanut butter because they are high in calories. Limit how often you have high-fat and high-sugar snacks like cake, candy, chips and soda Drink plenty of water or water-based fluids. You may notice that you feel less thirsty as you get older, but your body still needs water to stay healthy. Examples of water-based fluids are caffeine-free tea and coffee, soup and low-fat or skim milk.
Check with your health care provider. If you have a problem eating well, such as difficulty chewing or not wanting to.eat, talk to your health care provider or a registered dietitian/nutritionist. They can give you specific advice on following a healthy eating plan that addresses these barriers to healthful eating. Check with your dentist about caring for your teeth or dentures and your gums.
Health risks of being overweight or obese Type 2 diabetes High blood pressure High blood cholesterol Coronary heart disease Stroke Some types of cancer Gallbladder disease
If you already have one or more of these conditions, ask your health care provider if a modest weight loss (5 to 10 percent of your body weight) could help you feel better or need less medicine If you need to lose weight, make sure that you reduce your total calories, but do not reduce your nutrient intake.
Being active can lower the risks for heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Here a cyclist hits the trail at the Miccosukee Greenway park.(Photo: Democrat files)
Tips for safe physical activity
Physical activity is good for your health at every age. If you have never been active, starting regular physical activity now may improve your strength, endurance and flexibility. Being active may help you live on your own for a longer time and lower your chance of getting type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and colon cancer.
Whatever activity you choose, follow the safety tips below:
Ask your health care provider about ways you can safely increase the amount of physical activity you do now Take time to warm up, cool down and stretch Start slowly and build up to more intense activity; stop the activity if you experience pain, dizziness, or shortness of breath Drink plenty of water When you are active outdoors, wear lightweight clothes in the summer and layers of clothing in the winter Wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for sun protection Wear shoes that fit well and are right for your activity
Work physical activity into your day
There are plenty of ways to be active without setting aside a special time for exercise.
The tips below may help you to add more activity to your everyday life:
Take short walks throughout your day. Try a 10-minute walk before breakfast, at lunchtime, and after dinner. Clean your house or garage, or get out and do some yard work Consider joining a fitness facility. Look for outdoor walks or hiking activities sponsored by such groups as the Florida Trail Association or Move Tallahassee
These tips can assist us all in enhancing both our (and our seniors) health (and quality of life) across ones lifespan. Why not focus on pursuing these actions during National Nutrition Month and throughout the rest of the year? These tips can assist us all in enhancing both our health and that of our families and enhance ones quality of life across ones lifespan.

Why Losing Weight Is Basically The WORST Idea Ever – YourTango

Just stop right now...
If you're like millions who struggle right now with emotional eating, binge eating, and yo-yo dieting, first off, I wantyou to know that you're not alone!
Butthat fact probably doesn't bring you much comfortbecause you really don't want to stay in that camp, right?
Maybe you're like everyone else who tries hard to lose weight, stop the food obsessions, and end the struggle and your #1 thought is forever and always, "I want to lose weight".
Why? Because what you (and everyone else) have been taught is that "weight LOSS" is the way to go.
I've gotta "LOSE weight".
Right?
Here's the No. 1 reason why losing weight is the worst idea ever.
I was out with my Pomeranian, Happy, on one of our daily walks andhaving a grand'ole time.
I love our cardiowalks together! We walk almost non-stop for 30 to 45 a minimum of 5 days a week and sometimes I even hop on Periscope at the same time to ask my live viewers for their biggest weight loss challenges.
Since I coachclients to the end of theirbinge eating, emotional eating and self-sabotage, I'm interested to hear what my Periscope followers are battling with when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle without thestruggle.
That day, I came back home from my walk with Happy and found that the ring I'd been wearing for about 3 years was gone. I'm quite sure I had it on before we left the house and when we returned I saw that I'd lost my ring. I loved that ring.
I'd bought it on one of my trips to Denver. It reminded me of the fabulous moments I'd spent out in Colorado with all of the time spent getting my NLP certifications over several weeks with the best NLP trainers on the planet.
Needless to say, I was pretty upset when I saw that my ring was gone. So guess what I did when I found that I'd lost my ring?
I headed right back out the door!
It was already dark outside, and it was a very hot summer night. ButI grabbed a light and went out to retrace my steps.
When I didn't find my ring, I went out again the next day to retrace my steps, searching and searching for it.
I kept looking and looking and looking for my ring that I'd lost.
And that brings me to my point about losing weight...
Why losing weight is the WORST idea ever:
What have you ever lost in your life that you didn't keep trying to find after you lost it? If you're like everyone else on the planet, there's nothing in your life that you've ever lost that you didn't look for in hopes of finding it. Otherwise, you wouldn't say that it was lost!
So then ...why the heck do you want to LOSEweight? Is it because yo-yo dieting is fun? Do you want to lose weight so that you can gain back twice as much? I bet your answer to both of these questions is no. After all, who do you know wants to lose weight and then gain it all back?
No one, right?
Unfortunately, yo-yo dietingis a common struggle my coaching clients have prior to working with me.
But putting aside that millions struggle with yo-yo dieting, can you see that when you're stuck in the pattern that it's a perfect analogy for the constantsearch forlost weight? Just like I was constantly searching for my lost ring?
If it's lost, you are going to look for it!
Why losing weight Is NOT the result my weight loss coaching clients want (even though they think that's what they want in the beginning!):
Initially, my coaching clients hire mebecause they want to lose weight.
Even though they are very smart and successful women, they have never achieved lasting success with ending their binge eating, emotional eating, and yo-yo dieting on their own.
They hire me because theywant to end all of their food and weight struggles so that they can easily live a healthy lifestyle, drop the fat, and keep it off.
Butinitially, they dothink just like everyone else does that losing weight is the solution they want. What theyend up learning is that the BEST solution is torelease the fat from their body.
You see, when you release something, you let it go. You don't go out looking for it in the middle of the night like I went out looking for my ring that I'd lost!
Releasing the fat permanently and without struggle is the best solution for the problem.
Losing weight is the average solution that most are still hoping for, but losing weight is not permanent.
Eventually, that weight always comes back, because either consciously or unconsciously, you go out looking for it (and you always find it, right back where it started...).
However, when you learn how to release it and let it gothen you'll really be in the winner's circle.
When you easily release the fat from your body you don't go out looking for it in the middle of the night because it's notlost weight.Instead, it's the fat that you consciously choose to easily release because you're no longer fighting with emotional eating, binge eating, food addictions or self-sabotage.
You let the fat go and you don't miss it once the root of the problem is healed and the struggle that created the fat is released.
What would it feel like to release the fat for good?
How good would it feel if you could release the fat and let it go? For good?
What if you could say "bye-bye" to the fat, see it off, and never go out looking for it in the middle of the night because you never lost it, to begin with?
If you could release your binge eating, release your emotional eating, and fully get out of your own way, then does it make sense that nothing would stand in your way of releasing the fat? How would that feel?
The good news is that it is absolutely possible to achieve permanent weight loss.
My coaching clients do it all the timebut do keep in mind that it's an inside out process. It's all about healing the root of the real problem instead of trying to attack it from the outside, which is what almost everyone is trying to do.
When the root of the problem is healed and released, then your behaviors will transform.
And then guess what happens? It becomes easy to live the healthy lifestyle that will allow the fat to drop off and stay off. It's quite amazing once you experience it for yourself.
What if you make the decision now that you'll never again lose weight because you certainly don't want to FIND it again later?
What if from now on, any fat you release from your body will be released for good? Isn't that a much better plan for permanent weight loss?
Since 2009 JoLynn has been coaching smart, successful women out of the pain and frustration of emotional eating, binge eating and food addiction, into the place where weight loss is struggle-free. Genome-based diets improve growth, fertility and lifespan – HealthCanal.com (press release) (blog)

In flies and mice, diets based on an organisms genome enhance growth and fertility with no costs to lifespan, according to a team of researchers from UCL and the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing in Cologne.
A moderate reduction in food intake, known as dietary restriction, protects against multiple ageing-related diseases and extends life span, but can also supress growth and fertility. To avoid these damaging effects, the scientists designed a special diet based on the genome of the model organism.
In the study, published today in Cell Metabolism, the team calculated the amount of amino acids a fruit fly would need, thereby defining the diets amino acid composition.
The fly genome is entirely known. For our studies we used only the sections in the genetic material that serve as templates for protein assembly the exons, which collectively make up the exome. Then we calculated the relative abundance of each amino acid in the exome, and designed a fly diet that reflects this amino acid composition, explained George Soultoukis, who works alongside Professor Linda Partridge, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing in Cologne and at the UCL Institute of Healthy Ageing in London.
Using a chemically-defined fly diet previously developed by the team to enable manipulation of individual nutrients such as amino acids, the group found that flies eating the exome-matched diet develop a lot faster, grow bigger in size, and lay more eggs compared to flies fed a standard diet.
Remarkably, the flies on the exome-matched diet lived as long as slower-growing, fewer-egg-laying flies fed with standard diets. The flies that had free access to the exome-matched diet even ate less than controls. Thus, high quality protein, as defined by the genome, appears to have a higher satiety value, said Dr Matthew Piper, who conducted the work at UCL and is now working at Monash University.
The study also found that similar phenomena may occur in mice, and future mouse work could further improve our understanding of how and why diets affect mammalian lifespan including human lifespan.
Our aim now is to characterize the effects of genome-based diets upon mammalian lifespan. Dietary interventions based on amino acids can be a powerful strategy for protecting human health. Obviously factors such as age, gender, health, and personal lifestyle also have to be taken into account.
Future studies may still employ novel -omics data to design diets whose amino acid supply matches the needs of an organism with even higher precision. Understanding why we need amino acids in the amounts we do will be key, and such studies provide novel and powerful insights into the vital interactions between nature and nurture, concluded George Soultoukis.

Planning A Detox Diet For Summers? Here Are Few Things You Should Know Before You Try One – Indiatimes.com

Detox diets have been quite a rage in the recent years and have almost become another choice for people looking to lose weight via dieting. Now that summers are here, many of you must planning to shed weight to fit in your summer outfits. To help you with that we have listed some common facts about detox diets that will help you choose the right path to hit your goals!
squarespace.com
It is true that our body has a natural mechanism to purify our body. Toxins that accumulate in the body (food, air, tobacco, cosmetics, drugs, heavy metals, stress) are eliminated at varying speeds depending on your metabolism. You can help your body detoxify all year long, especially with foods rich in antioxidants like fresh fruit and vegetables that are organic and dont contain pesticides.
Absolutely not! Fasting or drastic dieting is not the same as detoxing. The word diet gets confused with the concept of the detox in many places. Dieting and detoxing are two different approaches that may or may not have the same goal. In fact, the aim of detox is not necessarily to lose weight. However, you should definitely try and avoid sugar, junk food and barbequed food which hinder the work of the emunctories.
http://www.rapiddetoxhelpline.com
Juices and soups are no good for health because they contain high quantities of sugar and salt, and have less fibre than eating the equivalent fresh fruit or vegetables whole. Second, a liquid-only diet isnt advisable, as you could end up starving yourself, since the body needs a minimum amount of protein to function. Small quantities of white meat or pulses are recommended.
A course of certain plant-based dietary supplements or herbal teas can be used to support and optimize detox performances in periods of burn-out, stress or fatigue, for example. Artichoke, milk thistle, rosemary, turmeric, fennel, birch, dandelion, black radish, queen-of-the-meadow and fumaria are the most effective. Some plants, like chlorella, spirulina and laminaria japonica help combat heavy metals (mercury, aluminum, lead).
polenresa.se
Massages in the abdominal region home to three groups of emunctory organs: the liver, the kidneys and the intestines can help flush out toxins. But lymphatic drainage is even more effective, promoting blood circulation and helping the lymphatic system to drain out waste substances which arent filtered out by blood.
