HEALTH AND FITNESS: Your metabolism explained – Aiken Standard

Many people are interested in speeding up their metabolism in an effort to lose weight. There are drugs, supplements and even certain foods that are thought to increase metabolism. The effectiveness of many of these things is unproven, and some may actually be dangerous. The goal of this article is to explain what the term metabolism really means and how it can be changed.

Metabolism refers all of your bodys processes that expend energy or burn calories. Practically, this is how much carbohydrate, fat and protein is burned throughout the day to provide energy for your cells. This matters because expending more energy than you consume in your diet can lead to weight loss over time.

The amount of energy you expend in a day is composed of three main components: your resting metabolic rate, or RMR, something called the thermic effect of food, or TEF, and the energy you expend in activity.

Resting metabolic rate is sometimes called the basal metabolic rate, or BMR, but many people refer to it as their metabolism. No matter which name is used, it refers to the calories you burn at rest. It represents the energy needed to maintain your essential body functions: heart rate, breathing, body temperature and normal cellular processes.

The resting metabolic rateis important because it represents about 60 to 70 percent of the total calories a typical person burns in a typical day. Even though resting metabolic rateis important, you shouldnt worry about it too much.

First, it is difficult to change. Resting metabolic rateis based mostly on your lean body mass, so the only way to increase it is to gain muscle mass. While this is a good goal, it is challenging to do, especially while you trying to lose weight.

Second, although it does vary among people, it isnt as different as people like to think. It is easy to think that someone who gains weight has a slow metabolism or that someone who is thin must have a fast metabolism. In reality, the RMR probably isnt much different, certainly when you take lean body mass (muscle) into account. The explanation for the differences in weight among people probably has more to do with what they eat and how active they are.

The thermic effect of food (TEF) represents the energy needed to digest, absorb, and store the nutrients you eat. It accounts for only about 10 percent of your total energy expenditure and it is practically impossible to change, so you can ignore it.

Activity is the most variable component of energy expenditure and the one you can most readily change. Obviously, it will vary based on how active you are, but for most people it accounts for 20 to 30 percent of total energy expenditure.

Activity includes both purposeful movement such as exercise and doing work or tasks that require you to move. Activity also includes non-exercise activity thermogenesis, or NEAT, the calories you burn when you move around, but not in a purposeful way. Maintaining your posture when sitting or standing, fidgeting in your chair or other light movements count as NEAT.

The surest way for you to increase your metabolism is to limit the time you spend sitting, be active as possible at all times and dedicate time to exercise every day. Doing prolonged aerobic exercise such as walking, jogging or exercise classes directly burns calories and including strength training will help increase your muscle mass, which can increase up your resting metabolic rate.

The bottom line is that speeding up your metabolism requires you to move. So, get up off the couch and go for a walk!

Would new town recreation center compete with businesses? – Palm Beach Daily News

A new recreation center in Palm Beach likely wont have an impact on local pilates and yoga studios, but it could affect the islands only fitness center open to the general public.

As part of its proposal to build a new recreation center, the town includes a 1,800-square-foot fitness center with 15 to 18 machines. Revenue from the sale of passes to the fitness center is supposed to help keep the center economically viable.

Craig Campbell owns Palm Beach Fitness, a 2,000-square-foot gym at 165 Chilean Ave. near Town Hall. Excluding boutique barre, yoga and pilates studios, its the only gym on the island not part of a private club or hotel. Campbell said hes kind of indifferent to the idea of a new gym in town, but doesnt think municipalities should try operate fitness centers like businesses.

I think its better handled by private people than governments getting involved, he said. I think if the market needed another fitness center on the island then wed have one.

Many residents agree with Campbell. Theyve argued at several meetings that adding a new fitness center will hurt other island fitness businesses.

What affect will a subsidized facility have on existing providers in town who themselves either own the parcels, pay taxes, pay rent in addition to all of the costs associated with running a business? resident Anita Seltzer asked at a Recreation Advisory Commission meeting this month.

Others have raised similar concerns over the past several months.

If we add a fitness center and all of these classes, we could hurt current Palm Beach businesses Councilwoman Julie Araskog has said. We must study this very carefully or we may run the risk of causing a loss of their profits and perhaps even cause some to close.

If you have a cheaper gym, people will abandon the gyms that they are members of and they will come to a gym that is less expensive, recreation board member Khooshe Aiken has said. It will put gyms out of business if people give up one membership and get another.

Recreation Director Beth Zickar has said its not the towns intention to put anyone out of business.

Our intention is to enhance services that are being provided on the island, she has said. We want to supplement services that are already being provided.

Ken Ballard of Ballard, King & Associates, the firm that prepared the business plan for the new center, has said adding a fitness element wont negatively impact the existing market.

We find across the United States that public facilities and private facilities have a very different market focus, he recently told the recreation board. In fact, in many cases weve found that the public side of things kind of ultimately feeds the private sector side by getting people introduced to the market. In many cases, people will pick and choose where they go and maybe join certain facilities for certain programs and the recreation center for others.

Ballard also said the recreation centers gym wouldnt be big enough to dominate the market.

Its a pretty small space in there, he said. It simply is not large enough to service a massive population in terms of exercise classes or just use of the fitness pieces. I dont see virtually any market impact.

Island biz reaction

Campbell said hes not worried about losing existing customers, but might be worried about gaining new customers if the town undercuts his prices.

I started this business on my own 13 years ago, he said. For them to come in and have a wad of money handed to them, yeah that sucks. But thats the way it is. Whatevers going to happen is going to happen.

Lauren Donovan owns Studios Etc. on North County Road, which includes Momentum Cycle, Labarre and Pilates. She said the new recreation center could be positive.

I think that things that are new and provide activity for the community are always positive, she said. We see our studios as being highly specialized, small boutiques. We dont get too worried or concerned about our clients going elsewhere.

Alyson Limehouse, owner of Sunset Pilates on Sunset Avenue, also isnt threatened by a new recreation center.

I like the rec center, she said. It serves a purpose. Its for the good of the community. Everybody should be able to go where they want to go. We live in America. Its a free world.

Adidas aims to open fitness app efforts to third-party partnerships – Retail Dive

Dive Brief:

Adidas is looking to partner with third party firms to create more personalized experiences for its fitness technology solutions as it shifts those efforts to focus on building an ecosystem for the Runtastic app it acquired in 2015, according to an Engadget report out of South by Southwest 2017.

The sportswear brand last month said it would be consolidating its digital efforts under the Runtastic banner, which already had 100 million users when it was acquired by Adidas, and shutting down its miCoach platform of health and fitness products.

Adidas told Engadget that because not everyone takes the same approach to working out, it is trying to tailor fitness experiences to individuals. It will look to do that in part by opening its own content and technology to third party devices.

So, Adidas is deciding to focus its personal fitness development energies around an app that long ago passed 100 million users (and which Adidas spent almost $240 million to acquire). This seems like a no-brainer and also maybe something that should have happened sooner.

These efforts come not long after Adidas competitor Nike revamped its Nike+ mobile app, a move that was intended to create a more seamless experience across a variety of Nike applications. By folding one app platform (miCoach) into another (Runtastic), Adidas may be looking to make things less confusing for itself and users by supporting fewer platforms.

Fitness apps are very much tied to the wearables market, and the wearables market has not developed the way some major device companies have figured it would, a notion most recently displayed in Best Buy's fourth quarter 2016 earnings report, which showed wearable to be among the product categories that experienced sales declines during the holiday period. It's not clear yet which other third party firms Adidas will be working with, how those partnerships will take shape or who will bringing what to the table. Opening itself to more partnerships could in some cases mean that Adidas' ability to move quickly with new offerings will be somewhat dependent on those partners.

Still, Adidas has its head in the right place with this effort. It is trying not to impose its own iron-clad device and app vision on fitness app users, recognizing that people want to use fitness apps in different ways and focus on using different features and functions, depending on how intensely they work out and what they train for. Creating an ecosystem that can bring as many new features and combinations of feature to the table as possible could be what helps Adidas stand out in the fitness app world.

Fitness training combines faith, support, nutrition and exercise – Parkersburg News

Business

Mar 12, 2017

Photo Provided A Temple Challenge group at the Wellness Center at Camden Clark Medical Center is put through an exercise routine. The Temple Challenge has grown to eight sites in the area.

Stacy Housers Temple Challenge incorporates faith, support and nutrition and exercise.

Support is one of the main reasons Temple Challenge has been so successful, Houser said.

Going into its fourth year, the Temple Challenge started at one site in Parkersburg and has expanded to eight locations in the region, she said.

Its a franchise now, Houser said.

Photo Provided Participants in the Temple Challenge are put through a physical fitness regimen.

Programs, led by different fitness trainers, are held at the E.L.I.T.E. Center in Parkersburg, the Victory Baptist Church in Ripley, Doddridge County High School, the Elizabeth Baptist Church in Wirt County, Ritchie County High School, Mountain River Physical Therapy in Vienna, the St. Marys Fitness Center and the Camden Clark Wellness Center.

Hours and schedule vary, but participants can join at any time, she said. The website is thetemplechallenge.com.

Among the trainers are Kim Poling, Chris and Lori Wells, Becky Marshall and Stephanie Bauman. Classes are $5 for a single session; however, multi-week packages are available.

Housers undergraduate degree was in kinesiology from the University of Maryland. Her graduate degree was from Ohio University in sports science.

She is the daughter of Mark and Cathy Houser. Mark is the pastor at the Community Baptist Church and her mother works at United Bank.

Photo Provided Stacy Houser

The basis of the Temple Challenge is 1 Corinthians 6:19, Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own.

The Temple Challenge is a multi-week regimen stressing cardiovascular and strength training, core exercises and flexibility, Houser said.

Obviously, youre going to challenge that temple, she said.

Participants are of all ages, from senior citizens to young children who have different goals, whether it be improved conditioning or losing weight, Houser said.

You never do the same workout twice, said Houser.

Photo Provided Two participants in the Temple Challenge program climb a rope.

In the beginning, mostly women were in the Temple Challenge. That has changed, Houser said.

Theres a lot more men than there used to be, she said.

About 100 people participated in the first year the Temple Challenge was started, Houser said. Today more than 1,000 people are in the program requiring it to expand to other sites, she said.

It kept growing, growing and growing, Houser said.

Candidates for Grand Junction City Council, District A – Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

By Staff Sunday, March 12, 2017

Name: Phyllis Norris

Age: 69

Years in Grand Junction: 69

1. Do you support creating a community/recreation center in GrandJunction?

Today the city offers numerous facilities and recreational opportunities to the community.

A few of these are:

The Orchard Mesa community center indoor pool is open year-round, a summer season pool and splash padat Lincoln Park.

A senior center on Sixth Street and Ouray Avenue.

Meeting rooms at Two Rivers, the Avalon, Lincoln Park Barn and the hospitality suite at the stadium.

Athletic and exercise programs at the Lincoln Park Barn, basketball programs at school locations, outdoor recreational programs at numerous parks, and a walking track at Lincoln Park.

We have nine privately owned fitness centers and 11 yoga/Pilates studios currently in the city.

There is a citizens group working to bring everything into one facility. I believe there are a lot of questions to be answered before we ask citizens to approve a tax to build and maintain a center.

2. What should City Councils role be in promoting economic development?

City Council developed an economic developmentplan in 2014. As part of that plan we hired an outside consultant to work with the ED partners in the valley; they developed action plans with goals for each partner. Each year they bring their plan to Council and we budget funding to support theseeconomic development goals. The city also supports the Visitor and Convention Bureau for promoting tourism. Councils role is to continue to support the entities that understand and have the ability to work with businesses to grow the economy.

3. Do you support the presence of retail marijuana businesses in Grand Junction?

According to Rocky Mountain High Drug Trafficking Area, since Colorado legalized marijuana, marijuana-related traffic deaths have increased 48 percent in a three-year period. Youth use of marijuana has increased 20 percent while the nation went down 4 percent. Hospital-related incidents have increased 49 percent. Highway patrol yearly seizures of Colorado marijuana increased 37 percent. I dont want this in our community, and we should remain one of the 68 percent of local jurisdictions who ban medical and recreational marijuana businesses.

4. Identify one or two issues you feel are most important for Grand Junction.

I believe the city of Grand Junction has two major issues. First is providing public safety for citizens. We still need additional police officers as well as another fire station in our community. The second is maintaining and expanding our road system. As our economy grows, funding for these areas will also grow. Council members need to stay focused on improving the economy and budgeting our funds to take care of these two issues.

5. What makes you a qualified candidate for City Council?

I retired as president fromCity Market six years ago and had a successful career because of my leadership skills, dedication to the company, strong work ethic and made decisions to help grow the company. The city needs these skills to help us continue to grow; because of my background, I provide the leadership needed for our city.

Name: Jesse Daniels

Age: 35

Years in Grand Junction: Born and raised in the Grand Valley

1. Do you support creating a community/recreation center in Grand Junction?

Im in full support of a community/recreation center in Grand Junction.Determining if an existing building could be retrofitted to become the facility or if a new facility should be created is paramount.Matchett Park has a space reserved as a potential facility location, and there has also been talk about retrofitting the Orchard Mesa Pool facility to become a community/recreation center.Voters have chosen in the past not to fund the center by way of a tax increase. So the overall health and success of Grand Junction based on tax revenue seems to be how this project would be funded.

2. What should City Councils role be in promoting economic development?

The City Councils role is to further the reach and effectiveness of programs that have proven their worth.Programs like: The Grand Junction Economic Partnership, The Downtown Development Authority, The Grand Junction Visitor and Convention Bureau, and The Business Incubator.Empowering these entities to make a deeper reach into and out of our community to attract economic development is their mission and our support of them should be of the highest priority.

3. Do you support the presence of retail marijuana businesses in Grand Junction?

Developing a healthy economic community is key to the success of Grand Junction; retail cannabis is a prime example of that.Community projects like a community/recreation center could be realized with the influx of tax revenue. Our schools are literally becoming a health hazard to students and faculty, our infrastructure is crumbling, and our emergency services need additional funding. All of these things are extremely costly. Retail cannabis enables Grand Junction to not only collect huge local tax revenues, but it allows for the city to apply for state level funding as well.I assisted GJ CAN to form their nonprofit status and helped them along the way to creating their regulatory framework for retail cannabis.Using their framework, talking with cities in Colorado that are seeing success, and combining all efforts to create the best model for Grand Junction to thrive, while reining in the black market and increasing our tourism this is how we realize a functioning cannabis industry.

4. Identify one or two issues you feel are most important for Grand Junction.

Issue 1: Divorcing our boom and bust mentality to diversify our economy.By simply attracting consumers back to Grand Junction.Achieving this by way of year-round concerts, events, trade shows, festivals and conventions through the expansion of Two Rivers Convention Center.Allowing a comprehensive and well-regulated cannabis industry.Empowering GJEP, the DDA, the GJ Visitor and Convention Bureau, and the Business Incubator to attract new exciting industries to Grand Junction.

Issue 2. Improving the overall quality of life for the Grand Junction community.Achieving this through a stable healthy diversified economy, community outreach programs, improving the mass transit system to once again include a light rail service, and addressing the homelessness issue in a way that creates a support system for mental/physical health, developing a path to success, work programs, and housing pathways.

5. What makes you a qualified candidate for City Council?

I am a qualified candidate because:

I have a common-sense approach to issues.

Being a career bartender and chauffeur Ive had a unique perspective the past 20 years into what people think of and need from this city.

Through activism Ive helped to shore up the needs of underprivileged communities in the Grand Valley.

Having been a business owner in this city, Ive seen what isnt working, how we can improve and how to perpetuate small businesses to their full potential.

Thank you for your consideration! We CAN build a better Grand Junction Together!

I want to lose belly fat fast – Jamaica Observer

I want to lose belly fat fast All Woman Monday, March 13, 2017 , Donovan GRANT

How do I lose belly fat only, without losing weight all over? I have two weeks to lose my belly and I dont want to do a detox. I have eliminated white rice and soda from my diet and Im doing cardio and sit-ups twice per week, but I still have a belly. What can I eat/drink or do to reduce my belly in record time? My current diet is pretty balanced and Im drinking lots of water.

Excessive belly fat can affect your looks even if you are happy with the rest of your body. Belly fat, sometimes called visceral or abdominal fat, can also affect your health. Extra abdominal fat increases the risk of diabetes and heart disease. This extra fat in the stomach region is usually associated with lifestyle stress and genetic factors.

You mentioned that you would like to lose your belly fat without doing a detox and without losing weight all over. However, I must tell you that once you lose fat you will also lose weight in other parts of the body. In addition, once you lose fat you will have to replace it with muscle in order to maintain a steady weight. This means that you will have to gain an equal amount of muscle for the fat that you have lost.

In order to lose belly fat without losing weight all over, you will have to focus on your diet and exercise. The good news is that abdominal fat is very responsive to exercise performed at the right intensity. Studies have shown that moderate to high-intensity cardio exercises done five to seven times per week for 30 - 60 minutes per session can help to reduce belly fat. Exercises such as running, cycling or swimming are very helpful. In addition to cardio exercises, resistance training will also allow you to maintain your weight while you are losing belly fat. Weight training is recommended about three times per week.

In terms of diet, foods that are high in fat, carbohydrates, preservatives, artificial sweeteners and other chemicals should be avoided. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, vegetable juices, soups, and yoghurt is better able to help you reach your goal.

In order to speed up the process of losing belly fat, you should have only liquids, including soups and vegetable juices, at least two days per week. However, it is prudent to set realistic goals in relation to losing belly fat. Dont expect rapid reduction. You will see gradual results if you focus on healthy eating and exercising on a regular basis. Good luck.

Want to stick to your diet and lose weight? Avoid dinner parties and restaurants – MarketWatch

When it comes to your diet, you are where you eat.

For people trying to lose weight or even maintain a lower body weight, the temptation to overeat is stronger when meals are eaten in a social setting like a friends home or restaurant, and when eating alone, according to research presented last week at an American Heart Associations conference. The study followed 150 people (90% of whom were women) who used smartphones and a custom-developed app to capture data as dieters moved through their day.

The chance of diet lapse and/or overeating was about 60% when eating in a restaurant and 50% when eating alone, said Lora Burke, the lead author of the study and professor of nursing in the Department of Health & Community Systems at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. When asked if they wanted more food or a high-calorie food, the odds of breaking their diet were also 60%. Odds of a diet lapse were lower at work (around 40%) or in a car (30%).

One theory: You have more control over what you eat when you cook it yourself at home and, similar to the peer-support philosophy of Weight Watchers WTW, +2.17% eat with people who have the most intimate knowledge of your goals. A 2014 study published in Public Health Nutrition found that cooking dinner frequently at home is associated with consumption of a healthier diet. But theres an important caveat to that: People are more likely to snack as a meal when they are alone.

Dont miss: Bottled water overtakes soda as Americas No. 1 drink

The time of day also effects whether or not you are likely to break your diet. Eating snacks that are considered better for you such as nuts, vegetable slices or fruits peak at around noon, followed by a slightly smaller rise in savory and sweet snacks at the same time of day, according to data released in 2015 by market research company The NPD Group. Meanwhile, sweet snacks such as candy, chocolate and ice cream peak in the evening just after 8 p.m.

During Burkes most recent study, women weighing less than 200 pounds were given a daily diet target of 1,200 calories per day, and men at that weight had a target of 1,500 calories. For those weighing over 200 pounds, the goal was 1,500 calories for women and 1,800 for men, limiting fat to about 25% of total calories. The technique used, ecological momentary assessment (tracking movements over a long period of time) has been used to study addiction, pain, stress and asthma.

Research into understanding and preventing weight regain is vital for improving the public health, Burke said. The participants in the study were 90% women and checked in five times per day, reporting where they went, where they ate and who they were with, and if they broke their diet or were tempted to break it. Helping an individual anticipate challenges and problem-solve high-risk situations can empower them to stay on track with their weight loss/weight maintenance plan.
