The concept of The Paleo Diet, in its simplest form, is dont eat anything a caveman couldnt eatas if they possessed some long-forgotten nutritional knowledge of whats good to eat and whats not. But a new study suggests that paleolithic people ate just about anything. If they had gotten the chance to dive-bomb a bag of Doritos, they would have.
The study, led by Laura Weyrich from the University of Adelaide, confirms what you may have already been thinking. Cavemen ate whatever they could find in order to survive, or so says their DNA. Some ate a lot of meat, like woolly rhinoceros and wild sheep. Others had entirely vegetarian diets, munching on mushrooms, pine nuts, tree bark, and moss. Weyrich explains to The Atlantic:
When people talk about the Paleo diet, thats not paleo, thats just non-carb. The true paleo diet is eating whatevers out there in the environment.
Neanderthals were adaptable and versatile, but they lived in extremely harsh conditions. There was no room to be picky. The Paleo Diet recommends you avoid foods like grains, legumes, potatoes, and dairy, but a Neanderthal would probably be thrilled to eat those. Their version of a paleo diet was if its edible, eat it or die. Of course, none of this means there arent benefits to subscribing to such a diet. If you like The Paleo Dietor one of its many offshootsand it helps you accomplish your nutrition goals, by all means, do it. Just keep in mind that it doesnt line up with the ways paleo people actually ate.

When I mean a Water Buffalo Diet, I don't mean that you eat like one. I merely use this title as a way to classify and to correct misconceptions of diets that are high in liquid. What I call Water Buffalo Diets are those that make you wallow in water or other liquids, depriving you of essential nutrition.
You know how it starts. After a particularly unending weekend of binge eating and binge drinking, you decide to turn over a new leaf or compensate for all the indulgences. You then decide to take the extreme step - liquid diet. It is actually quite bad for you. It doesn't matter whether it's juices, soups or water.
I once had a client who came into my clinic after completing a liquid diet. It comprised lime water, reduced food intake and drinking more than four litres of water every day. Needless to say, the weight she lost came right back, and then some more. I'll tell you what I told her: if you are on a liquid diet no matter what that liquid may be you will be almost completely starved of carbs, proteins and fats, all of which are crucial for your health. And, get this, crucial for long-lasting weight loss plans.

When John Stull was released from prison six years ago, he could have moved away to start anew, leaving Columbia where he was an all-state defensive end at Rock Bridge High School and an heir-apparent to the growing roster of NFL prospects on the University of Missouri defensive line.
Instead, Stull, 29, came home. He severed ties with the connections and habits that led him down a path of drugs and crime, determined that those days were behind him. On Monday, his MKT Fitness gym officially opens inside the Missouri Athletic Center at 2900 Forum Blvd. Hes the owner and head coach.
I recognized that I had hurt a lot of people in the community by the decisions I was making, Stull said. He credited coaches and others in Columbia who helped him escape poverty and become a solid student and an elite football player.
I kind of squandered all of that, he said. Stull wanted to stay in Columbia and make amends for what I had done, to leave more of a lasting legacy of positivity that can help people for a long time.
He also credits media coverage of his post-crime life for reframing his story from one that was once headlined with news of assault, drunk driving, selling drugs and burglary.
Now when someone Googles my name, all the trash isnt the first thing they see, he said. Its rare to come out of the situation I did, but its possible, for sure.
Stull knows there are others in the community who need to know you can get past that and not be judged by what you did, but judged by who you are. The transformation that he wants to help facilitate comes through CrossFit-style training that builds strength, endurance and overall fitness.
Stull said his gym will use cutting-edge fitness science and methods to help others reach their fitness goals more quickly in an inviting, supportive way.
He is a certified CrossFit trainer, with additional certification in nutrition and strength and conditioning. He also judges competitive CrossFit events.
MKT Fitness will offer a variety of fitness programs, along with bootcamps and gymnastics.
Stull also is ready to share his own story of redemption to validate his hard work and motivate others.
Its really awesome and humbling to see it all come to fruition now, he said. Im actually opening my own business. Its all really exciting.

Kids with disabilities like autism and down syndrome and adults with Parkinson's are the focus of unique fitness classes that are changing lives at Beyond Fitness, a specialty gym in Delray Beach.
Colleen Sturgess, Beyond Fitness owner, spoke exclusively with CBS12 News This Morning.
Trainers use dancing, boxing, weights, bands and core work while incorporating balance and movement exercises to help kids and adults with limitations become agile, focused and strong in various ways.
Sturgess explained there is an emphasis on mindfulness training to help them quiet the "chatter" in their heads in order to lower stress.
Overall mind and body health is especially crucial for these particular adults and kids, Sturgess said.
There are a variety of classes offered. One class is called Dancers with Disabilities and is designed for [people with disabilities] that keeps them from feeling comfortable in a traditional dance studio," Sturgess said. "The focus of the class is not perfecting steps, its about the combination of movement, music, and an enjoyable time among peers with no judgement.
Dancers with Disabilities and Dancing with the Stars for Parkinson are a couple of the unique programs offered.

To attract more prison guards, state wants to suspend fitness requirements – Concord Monitor

Faced with the need to hire roughly 80 officers to guard the new womens prison, the Department of Corrections is seeking to suspend physical fitness requirements it says have disqualified dozens of applicants.
The Commissioner doesnt see it as a priority for our staff to be able to run a mile and a half during a specified period of time based on their age and gender when they work inside our prisons, said spokesman Jeff Lyons.
Gov. Chris Sununu is supportive, but a union representing corrections officers contends any reduction in standards could jeopardize staff safety.
To think that reducing (standards)is going to somehow fix the problem, it is going to make it worse, said Jeffery Padellaro, with the Teamsters Local 633.
The corrections department has struggled over the last few years to recruit enough people to guard the states three prisons in Berlin, Concord and Goffstown.
Last fiscal year, more prison guards left the job than the department hired, leading to a net loss of 11 corrections officers, Lyons said.
To make up for the staff shortage, prison guards have been forced to work overtime shifts. While employees are prevented from logging more than 16 hours in a row without an eight-hour break, many guards have to work double shifts multiple times a week, Padellaro said. As a result, department overtime spending has skyrocketed in recent years, from $3.3 million in 2009 to $9.1 million in 2015.
Republican Gov. Chris Sununus budget proposal calls for repealingthe requirement that corrections officers pass a nine-week certificationto get hired at a state prison. Sununu supports giving the department direct control over officer standards, said spokesman Dave Abrams.
The department is not seeking the full repeal, but rather a two-year suspension of physical fitness requirements so it can hire guards to work at the new womens prison in Concord, Lyons said.Dozens of job applicants have been found physically fit by a doctor, but havent been able to pass strength or running tests.
The fitness requirements are set by the Police Standards and Training Council, which runs training for law enforcement officers in New Hampshire, including state and local police, Fish and Game and the Department of Corrections.
Women between age 18 and 29 must be able to run 1.5 miles in 15 minutes, do 31 sit-ups in a minute and complete 14 push-ups, according to the police standards and training council. Men in that age range must be able to run 1.5 miles in 12:53 minutes, do 37 sit-ups in a minute and complete 27 push-ups. The requirements become more relaxed for older applicants.
Padellaro says the solution isnt suspending standards, but raising pay to attract more competitive applicants. The Teamsters recently declared an impasse in contract negotiations with the governors office because Sununu was unwilling to raise officer salaries, Padellaro said.
The pool of applicants could go to work at the federal prison system for $10,000 to $15,000 more for starting pay, or go right over the border to Massachusetts, he said.
Sununu said in a statement he was surprised anddisappointed by the stalled negotiations. The contract would cover the 2018 and 2019 fiscal years.Its not clear when talks will resume. This fiscal year, which ends in June, the corrections department has hired more workers than its lost for a net gain of 10 people.

A FITNESS trainer has impressed the web after showing off her rock hard abs just NINE DAYS after giving birth.
Instagram star Massy Arias, 28, welcomed her daughter Indira Sarai into the world on February 28 but just a little over a week later the LA based mum is flaunting a terrifically toned tum.
Massy took to Instagram to share a side-by-side photo of herself heavily pregnant alongside another shot of her showing off fit frame, with little Indira resting on her chest, just nine days postpartum.
Massy, who has more than 2.2 million Instagram followers, explained that she is currently recovering and eating the best she can while adding 600 to 800 extra of calories to her diet to support her milk supply.
She has yet to return to exercising but says that she is eating well by tracking the number of grams of protein, carbohydrates, and fats eats each day.
She wrote: You saw how active I was during my pregnancy and how well I ate.
I had a natural labour with no complications (thank God and to this lifestyle)
I am still practicing what I believe in: food is medicine and I dont deprive myself from any food groups.
I just EAT WHOLE AND EAT WELL.
According to Massy, she keeps her protein intake high to support her muscle and she drinks about a four and a half litre of fluids a day, mostly water.
Using the macro calculator on her program, Massy says that she has been able to maintain her physique without working out.
She added: Its amazing what you can do when you know specifically what to eat.
I do miss movement but first, I have to heal properly.
Thousands of people commented on the post, and with many praising Massy for how she had recovered.

Los Angeles Police recently visited Richard Simmonss house on a welfare check after rumors persisted that his housekeeper was holding him hostage.
They found him perfectly fine and very happy, People reported Thursday. The article did not say when police made the check. But TMZ, quoting law enforcement sources, said it was about two weeks ago.
On Feb. 15, 2014, the fitness guru disappeared from the public eye and stopped speaking with close friends. He hasnt been seen since, leaving many to wonder about his safety. Recently, interest in the reclusive celebrity has grown with the launch of Missing Richard Simmons, a new podcast hosted by former The Daily Show producer Dan Taberski. Its quickly become the most popular podcast on iTunes.
On it, an old rumor resurfaced: that Simmonss maid Teresa Reveles is holding the aerobics instructor at his home against his will.
There was something about his housekeeper holding him hostage and not allowing people to see him and preventing him from making phone calls and it was all garbage and thats why we went out to see him. None of it is true, Detective Kevin Becker told People.
The fact of the matter is we went out and talked to him he is fine, nobody is holding him hostage. He is doing exactly what he wants to do. If he wants to go out in public or see anybody he will do that.
Added Becker, I dont know what he is going to do, but right now he is doing what he wants to do and it is his business.
In March last year, Simmons tried to silence the rumors by calling into the Today show.
No one is holding me in my house as a hostage, he said. You know, I do what I want to do as Ive always done so people should sort of just believe what I have to say because like Im Richard Simmons.
When asked about the rumor that Reveles had him under house arrest, Simmons responded, Thats just very silly. Teresa Reveles has been with me for 30 years. Its almost like were a married couple.
Instead, he claimed to just want some alone time.
I just sort of wanted to be a little bit of a loner for a little while, he said. You know, I had hurt my knee, and I had some problems with it, and then the other knee started giving me trouble because Ive taught like thousands and thousands of classes, and you know right now I just want to sort of take care of me.
Taberski doesnt seem to fully believe the phone call, though.
It was a weird, concerning phone call. It was weird that it was a phone call and not an in-person thing. It sort of raises the question of why was he hiding? he told Los Angeles Magazine.
Simmons spokesperson Tom Estey, however, doubled-down on Simmons statements.
He made a choice to take a break from public life, which he has the right to do, Estey told People. People need to respect that and not surmise that theres something wrong, when theres nothing wrong. For 40 years, he took care of everyone else but himself. And so its not that hes being selfish, hes just being a person, a regular person, taking care of himself.
Why then is there a popular podcast about a missing man who isnt actually missing?
Some have accused Taberski of attempting to make a name off the reclusive celebrity. The Washington Posts Dan Zak called the podcast a loving invasion of Simmons privacy.
Taberski, though, claimed he wants to do more than merely find Simmons or an audience.
What were doing is something of a grand gesture, Taberski told Zak. We are reminding him that what he did was important and that he helped countless people and they love him for it. Theres something about him, maybe, that he doesnt believe, and hopefully this will jar that part of him.

Hampton family partners with Planet Fitness for CHKD – Daily Press

In 2011, Marlon and Shawnie BaCote's daughter became a patient at Children's Hospital of the King's Daughter, the Peninsula's only children's hospital.
During the course of their daughter's eight different admissions, the family spent many days and nights under the care of the CHKD staff that made a lasting impact on the family.
"Pretty much, that was our second home," Shawnie said. "Because of the wonderful nurses and doctors who were involved with her care, when Marlon and I came together and got married, we felt like this was just our passion. We thought that we wanted to take this our cause and give back."
The husband and wife became year-round volunteers at the children's hospital, leading activities with patients, donating toys and dressing up as Superman for the kids to lift their spirits.
Two years ago, the BaCotes expanded their connection with CHKD when they began hosting toy drives in Hampton Roads. By the summer of 2016, their toy drives grabbed the attention of a major community business and led to a unique partnership.
Planet Fitness, where the BaCotes are members, has partnered with the family to host its toy drives at its 10 Hampton Roads locations. The most recent drive together was March 1, and more drives are being planned.
"You can just tell how passionate they (the BaCotes) are about it, and we wanted to help," said Melicia Limbo, Planet Fitness' director of marketing. "It was an opportunity for Planet Fitness to get our members involved and belong to a gym that actually gives back and involves its members."
More than two truck flatbeds were loaded down with bags filled with toys, blankets, books, stuffed animals and other useful items for CHKD chemotherapy patients at the last drive.
"Every store manager from each location came out with toys and pulled up in a truck. I get tears just thinking about it because they were like, 'Hold on, we're not done,'" Marlon said. "They were moving in and unloading trucks full of stuff. It was an amazing experience."
First Baptist Church also sponsors the BaCotes' fundraising efforts by contributing knitted hats.
While volunteers are not able to assist with patients from November to February because of flu season, March marks the first month the BaCotes and others can return to volunteering in person.
"After flu season, during the season when you can go, I had gone so much they said, 'Marlon, I'm sorry, we have so many other groups that want to come in,'" Marlon said with laughter. "We do activities, finger painting, and seeing the smiles on the children's and staff's faces is rewarding."
The couple aims to host more events to benefit CHKD. They also encourage others to volunteer and donate regularly if possible.

In January, a quaint little caf with a picturesque inlet frontage opened its doors to the public for the first time in months and, once again, both meatheads and masseuses alike were once again free to get their caffeine fix.
Collegetown Bagels, the venerable local eatery, opened a new location in a former caf within the Island Health and Fitness facility last month filling a gap that, since the building opened, was always home to an eatery.
The spot, which features floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the inlet and a (usually) sun-lit patio used to be home to The Inlet Island Caf, a small but well-liked eatery specializing in protein-infused smoothies, made from scratch soups and some of the best chocolate chip cookies youll ever have.
However, that shop shut down last year and, for eight months, stayed vacant, with all the equipment still in place. Already touting an established brand, Collegetown Bagels slapped their branding on it, cycled in their staff and opened CTB: Fresh. The caf had its soft opening in late January and since, has already meshed into the daily lives of those working and relaxing in 310 Taughannock Boulevard, from medical professionals with Cayuga Medical Center looking for a quick lunch to those taking some time off at Rasa Spa, all the way to those working out at Island Fitness, looking for some post-workout sustenance.
People seem very happy were here, said Katie Warren, who serves as both General Manager of the Island Health and Fitness location as well as CTBs downtown shop on Aurora Street. I think there was a reasonable demand within the building to have something to fill the space.
While the menu stays fairly true to that of Collegetown Bagels other locations, the menu at their new Island Fitness location attempts to create some distinctions between them and their standalone establishments. The menu is less ambitious, featuring 10 of their most popular and healthier sandwiches as compared to the extensive offerings of their Aurora Street and College Ave locations. The caf also touts a select offering of grab and go type fare from sandwiches and salads to guacamole and hummus. Open seven days a week, the place is generally open during waking hours but management is still trying to get a feel for the demands of its clientele and has nothing set in stone yet.
