Grist Mill Fitness brings new health and wellness option to Yardley Borough – Bucks Local News

YARDLEY BOROUGH >> Theres a brand new place to work out in town, meet new friends and have some fun burning calories.
On Saturday, State Rep. Perry Warren (D-31) and Yardley Borough Councilman Jef Buehler were on hand to help Colleen Faltot, her family, friends and employees cut the ribbon on Grist Mill Fitness located inside the iconic grist mill property at 40 North Main Street.
Its great to welcome another new business to the community," said Warren. "The owners and instructors are motivated and excited. Theyre going to bring a lot of energy and enthusiasm to the business and to the community. Grist Mill Fitness offers a great opportunity for people to focus on their fitness and health.
He also commended Yardley Borough Council and the Yardley Borough Enhancement Team (Yardley BET) for supporting small businesses in town and encouraging new and exciting businesses to locate here.
Small business is the life blood of the community in our boroughs and in our towns and its great to see new entrepreneurs coming in here and our local government working to make them a success, he said.
Faltot, the owner of Grist Mill Fitness and a Certified Holistic Health Coach and Certified Fitness Professional, was born and raised in Yardley. Prior to opening Grist Mill Fitness on March 1, she ran Fit4Mom, a health and fitness community for local moms.
Its been going awesome, said Faltot of her first few days in business. Everyone has been loving it. Weve had some really positive feedback.
I could not be more excited to bring this health and wellness resource to my community, she said. Everyone needs a fun, no judgment zone where they can go for support, accountability and an awesome workout! If that is what you are looking for, you have found your home!
Grist Mill Fitness offers 24 small group classes each week as part of its membership. In addition, they have 8-Week Challenges - 56 days designed to teach members how to fuel their bodies, move more, live healthier and enjoy themselves while doing it. They also offer health coaching and personal training.
We have workout routines for every level, said Faltot. Were here to provide a fun, effective workout. We switch it up every time so youre never taking the same class, she adds. Its also about community. When people come to Grist Mill Fitness we know you by name. Its a totally different experience.
One of the unique aspects of Grist Mill Fitness is their emphasis on regular, caring accountability. The first week of every month members go through a Fit-Test to track their progress and celebrate their non-scale victories. Seeing how many more push-ups and sit-ups one can do in a minute can be incredibly motivating.
The Fit-Test is an objective opportunity for members to track results and push through that infamous extra inch we talk about in every workout. Fit-Tests also help our members stay accountable and motivated to keep on top of their fitness, emphasized Faltot.
At the end of the day, continued Faltot, at Grist Mill Fitness we believe in empowering people, we believe in community, and we believe in results! Our mission is to make fitness fun. We strive to help our members take ownership of their health and improve their life as a whole.
To reach out and engage the greater Yardley community, Grist Mill Fitness is offering one week free in March to anyone in the community that would like to see what Grist Mill Fitness is all about.
The new fitness center fills a gap left by the departure of Yardley Fitness, which moved to larger quarters in nearby Morrisville.
Were happy they could incubate here, said Buehler, the chairman of the Yardley BET. But were even happier to have Grist Mill Fitness move in here, invest in the borough and use what was a vacant space and turn it into something that is positive and proactive.
It also adds to our wellness niche in Yardley, which we are known for along with our specialty niche restaurants and eateries. We are really excited to have Colleen and her team here, he said.
Strengthening our wellness niche, Grist Mill Fitness is a great asset to us. We look forward to working with them and working out with them, he said.
The opening of Grist Mill Fitness in the latest in a string of new businesses that have opened there doors here in the last few years. Others have included Yardley General and O So Inviting.
Looking ahead, Buehler said T. Foster & Company Fine Jewelers will be holding a grand opening in the next month or so.
And hopefully well have two other business announcements coming shortly thereafter. This spring, were going to have a lot of new and wonderful businesses growing in our community, he said.

HEALTH AND FITNESS: It’s not too late to fight the flu – Aiken Standard

If my Facebook feed is any indication, cold and flu season is far from over, even though we are experiencing warmer weather. Unfortunately, the natural spread of cold and flu viruses at this time of year can interfere with your springtime activities.
Getting a flu vaccine is the most important thing you can do to prevent seasonal influenza, or the flu. If you didnt get a flu shot this year, there is still much you can do to reduce your risk of getting sick.
For starters, you can protect yourself by not touching your eyes, nose or mouth and by washing your hands frequently with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. But there are additional steps you can take to fight cold and flu viruses.
Exercise can have a positive effect on your immune system. People who exercise on a daily basis have fewer and less severe colds and have up to 50 percent fewer sick days than those who arent regularly active. Research in animals and humans shows that exercise increases the activity of certain immune cells called helper T cells. This makes the immune systems response to viruses, like the cold and flu, more robust. The strongest evidence is seen when the exercise is moderate in intensity and duration, such as a 30- to 60-minute walk or jog each day.
More exercise isnt always better, though. Very vigorous and prolonged exercise can have the opposite effect. Athletes who engage in long, intense training tend to be more susceptible to upper respiratory infections. Research shows that immune function is depressed in the weeks leading up to and after running a marathon, resulting in an increased risk of becoming sick. The bottom line is that while exercise improves your immune system, very vigorous exercise may not.
Regular exercise also enhances the immune system response to the influenza vaccine. This means that the flu vaccine can be more effective in people who exercise. If you dont exercise already, you can still benefit: one study showed that a single, 45-minute exercise session can improve the immune response to the flu vaccine. You can get this benefit by going for a brisk walk before your flu shot, something to think about next fall.
Good nutrition is also important for optimal immune system function. Deficiencies of certain nutrients can have a negative effect on immune function, so eating a balanced diet is essential. That said, there is no support for boosting the immune system by taking high doses of vitamins, minerals or other supplements, despite the claims made by supplement companies.
You can get benefits from two more common-sense recommendations: getting adequate sleep and reducing stress. Poor sleep habits are associated with suppressed immunity and more frequent illness. Sleep deprivation can also reduce the positive immune response to a flu shot. High levels of stress increase susceptibility to colds and flu and can lead to more sick days from work or school. Stress and poor sleep habits tend to occur together, creating a double negative effect on the immune system.
You should definitely follow the traditional advice of getting a flu shot and washing your hands frequently. In addition, to have your best chance of staying healthy you should also exercise every day, eat a healthy diet, manage your stress, and get enough sleep. As a bonus, many of these habits will also help you lose weight and reduce your risk of diabetes, heart disease and some cancers along with keeping you healthy this cold and flu season.

9 Round Fitness: Punching, Kicking, Conditioning in 30 Minutes and No One Gets Hit – ARL now

The first sweat broke during Round 1, which was three minutes of jumping rope. Easy right? Well, whens the last time you jumped rope for three minutes?
The three minutes of elevated plank jacks supported on your elbows, springing your legs in and out really got the blood moving. By Round 4, the gloves were on and I was hitting a punching bag suspended from the ceiling and anchored to the floor. Right jab, right jab, left punch
Five more rounds, or stations, to go.
By the time my 30 minutes was over I had finished a nine station workout that had me throwing combination punches, kicking heavy bags and challenging every part of my body.
And it was fun, above everything else, even though I had no idea what I was doing for the first 20 seconds of each round.
Thats the motivational concept behind the four Arlington and Falls Church locations of 9Round Fitness. The idea is to make a workout efficient (30 minutes, max; no appointment time, you drop in when you can and start right away), safe (a trainer is on the floor at all times to help with techniques) and fun (yes, hitting a heavy bag is fun).
While the signature movements are based on boxing and kickboxing be advised that no one hits anyone else, ever.
Were not a kickboxing or fight gym, says co-owner Rob Graveline, who grew up in Arlington. Its a 30-minute, full-body workout with a trainer included. Were not hitting each other or making contact. Were for all levels: You dont have to be an elite athlete or an MMA fighter in training to appreciate this workout.
The idea is to keep the body moving in a strategically designed sequence that incorporates different motions to achieve maximum results, namely calorie burn and muscle development.
The nine workout stations are modeled on nine rounds of boxing; a timer on the overhead sound system keeps everyone apprised as to how many seconds are left in their three-minute round, and when the bell rings, you have 30 seconds of active resting to get to the next station.
I was brand new to boxing technique but in the 30 seconds between rounds Graveline was able to show me the basics of what I was going to do for the next three minutes.
Thankfully, you dont have to be versed in gym-lingo to understand the instructions. In my case, I completed each station successfully, if a bit sweaty and out of breath, but was well aware that my technique was monstrously beginner. With practice my technique would improve and I would get the maximum benefit from the exercise.
The exercises on the circuit change daily, so those dropping in three, four or five times a week get a completely new workout each time. And yes, you can drop in as often as you like, and without appointments, a huge luxury in the personal training world.
Membership rates are based on how long you want to invest in yourself: The longer the commitment, the lower the rate. Included in the membership is a surprising number of value-adds, such as a heart-rate monitor to target fat-burning zone (calories burned, heart rate, effort level and other data); nutritional guidance and one-on-one nutritional support; an online meal planner; and 9Round instructional videos and podcasts.
Your gloves and wraps are included in the membership fee.
As for Graveline, a career trainer for 27 years, enjoys motivating people to reach their goals. For him, he fell for the 9 Round concept as soon as he heard about it.
Its one of those things where everybody can do it, he says, adding that one client is an 85-year-old woman. Were there to modify it to your ability to keep it safe and fun.
And nobody gets hit.
A single membership is good for all three Arlington/Falls Church locations:
An Old Town Alexandria location is expected to open this summer. Email Rob Graveline at [emailprotected]for more information

Does masturbation affect your stamina during workouts? (fitness query) – TheHealthSite

If you thought masturbation affected your stamina at the gym, read this.
Stamina also called endurance is of two types when it comes to aerobic exercise cardiovascular endurance and muscular endurance. Cardiovascular endurance is the ability of the heart and blood vessels to pump and deliver oxygenated blood to working muscles for extended periods of time during any activity or workout. Muscular endurance is the ability of the muscles to contract and create the required movement for a particular activity or workout for prolonged periods of time without getting fatigued.
So when it comes to masturbation affecting stamina during aerobic exercise, there is no evidence that masturbation has an adverse effect on any cardiovascular activity because masturbation does not in any way hamper the aspects of physiology that are involved in aerobic performance says Vikram Dutta, personal trainer, fitness entrepreneur and founder of CurveStrength Wellness Fitness Studio in Mumbai.
Masturbation leads to a surge in testosterone hormone immediately after the act, which is in no way going to hamper aerobic fitness. The fatigue after masturbation may lead to decrease in performance for some people but this is quite negligible to consider.
Does masturbation affect your capacity to practice weight training?
Weight training or strength training is the practice of strengthening the musculoskeletal system (muscles, bones, connective tissues: tendons & ligaments) with the use of resistance. There is no evidence to show that masturbation affects weight training practice adversely in any way.
Healthy practice of sexual activity and masturbation actually improved immune system, mental well-being and better quality of life. In fact according to some studies a post workout induced ejaculation can help in increase the functionality of the immune system to aid in exercise recovery.
Do gym trainers suggest avoiding masturbation before workouts?
Ejaculation naturally causes a spike in prolactin which causes temporary decrease sexual desire, and decreases dopamine, it does not cause significant changes in the testosterone levels. There is no biological reason whatsoever to avoid masturbation before workouts. However, if someone experiences fatigue and loss of energy after masturbation, then obviously it may affect their performance in the workout if performed in that condition.

BrainHealth Club: Personalized training for your most important organ – Palm Beach Post

When a prominent Palm Beach resident received the diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment five years ago, she and her husband, a retired business executive, wanted to do something more than just live with the outcome. Their research led them to an experimental initiative in Boston, which was essentially a personalized workout program focused on the reduction of risk factors leading to Alzheimers disease.
This program, which helped slow the progression of her illness, is now the basis for a unique type of wellness program to launch in mid-March in West Palm Beach called The BrainHealth Club. It will be dedicated to promoting brain-health and holistic wellness. Based upon the latest scientific advances for enhancing the mind and body, The BrainHealth Club, located on the MorseLife Health System campus, will accommodate up to 200 members per year and provide each member with a unique, custom-designed program to improve brain function and promote overall wellness. Unlike any other facility, The BrainHealth Club offers members an integrated approach to wellness that includes brain training, exercise, diet and nutrition coaching, and control of metabolic and vascular risk factors.
The BrainHealth Club was founded by two entrepreneurs who assembled a team of leading experts in neurology, neuropsychology, nutrition, Alzheimers prevention and physical training who serve on the companys Scientific Advisory Board.
Dr. Carl Sadowsky, an Advisory Board member and leading neurologist and medical researcher in West Palm Beach states, Through our new program, BrainHealth Club members will benefit from the latest advances in science that may reduce the negative impacts of aging.
Dr. Sadowsky asserts that the scientific evidence behind The BrainHealth Club has shown to slow the progression of cognitive impairment and might even reduce the chance of Alzheimers and dementia through interventions to eliminate risk factors.
The program starts with a comprehensive assessment that includes cognitive, physical, cardio vascular, and diet to determine the members BrainHealth Index (BHI) score. This proprietary index score is the basis for creating a plan tailored to each members needs. The core of the program is based upon the Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability (FINGER Study), which identifies five critical elements that together could help impact neuroplasticity, the brains ability to adapt to new experiences.
Dr. Sadowsky and The BrainHealth Club team designed the clubs regimen to incorporate the key elements of the FINGER Study, starting with a personalized exercise program. Overseen by an exercise physiologist, the program uses specialized cardio equipment along with other fitness and activity programs, such as Tai Chi, yoga, gardening and painting. The other elements include the following:
According to Keith Myers, President and CEO of MorseLife Health System, the launch of The BrainHealth Club on the campus of the nonprofit senior care organization represents a perfect fit for the needs of the community.
As a strategic organization, we consistently strive to fill gaps in care identified in our service area, which is why we established an innovative Memory Care Assisted Living program last year, he said. Our hope is that someday there will be no need for our memory care programs, but with no cure for Alzheimers, even in the near future, an outcome-oriented program such as The BrainHealth Club is going to make some serious headway in prevention. We are thrilled to serve as the launching ground for this innovative program.
According to Dr. Sadowsky, The BrainHealth Club is appropriate for most individuals, especially those who may find themselves at risk of Alzheimers disease and to those in the early stages of diagnosis with cognitive impairment.

When kids fall, they usually just get up and return to playing. But for older adults, falls are a major threat to … – Holmes County Times Advertiser

By Bob Moos
When kids fall, they usually just get up and return to playing. But for older adults, falls are a major threat to good health and independence.
Every year, about one in four Americans 65 and older falls, and about one in five of those who lose their footing suffers a serious injury, such as a hip fracture, broken bone or head injury.
About 3 million older adults a year are treated in emergency departments for injuries from falls, and about 800,000 are admitted to hospitals. But even a fall without a major injury can cause an older adult to become fearful or depressed, making it difficult to remain active -- and more likely to fall again.
Many people think falls are an inevitable part of aging. The truth is, theyre not. Most falls can be prevented. Managing your medications, having your vision checked, staying strong with exercise, changing your footwear, creating a safer environment at home and using a cane or walker are all steps you can take to become more sure-footed.
Lets look at each precaution:
The fear of falling doesnt need to rule your life. By taking some smart steps to reduce the risk of an accident, you can stay healthy and active.

With Love celebrates one year of community partnership – Daily Trojan Online

With Love Market and Cafs apple green walls are adorned with the words, Our community is beautiful, authentic, hard-working, strong, diverse and their Spanish equivalent, Nuestra comunidad es bella, autentica, trabajadora, fuerte and diversa.
The organization celebrated its one-year anniversary on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., featuring games, delicious food and a celebration of the good accomplished in the community.
The market and cafe, located on South Vermont Avenue, kills three birds with one stone its a market, cafe and non-profit community program that aims to eliminate food deserts and foster community development in South Los Angeles.
Every product in the market provides locally sourced organic produce, meats and dairy. Its cafe provides healthy selections like sandwiches, smoothies and tea made with only fresh ingredients. Its non-profit, With Love Community programs, offers free classes that educate people on healthy eating, child development, exercise and other life skills enabling our community to thrive, according to the official website.
Not the typical cafe, With Love is a reflection of the past, present and future of South Los Angeles. The store is decorated according to South Central culture, originality and style with a mission of making the local community a better and healthier place to live. The cafe and market also provide space on the first and second floors, in addition to the outside patio, to relax, socialize and study.
All of its proceeds are promised to be reinvested to the local community, whether by providing jobs and internships for L.A. locals or by training and empowering residents.
Andrew McDowell, the founder and CEO of the market, devoted years to researching the needs of South Los Angeles before starting this social entrepreneurial venture, which began with a Kickstarter campaign.
Were trying to prove that communities like ours, which is very diverse but yet lower income, deserve, want and can sustain better quality products, McDowell said. Its a proof of [the] concept that a community can sustain a business like ours that provides a higher resource or product.
The CEO said that hed also like to expand services and programs by bringing local produce and organic groceries to other places in the near future.
Last month, the market launched its first free library, With Love Little Library, a collection of books that are free to customers without restrictions.
When asked about the future of With Love, McDowell said that he hopes to unite the USC and Los Angeles communities.
Were just trying to expand our offerings to meet the real needs of the community more exercise classes, cooking classes and more resources, McDowell said. Were trying to understand how to provide programs that help both USC and the community and unify them together by changing lives, giving more jobs and making it a better place to live.

Few heart attack survivors get recommended physical activity – Knowridge Science Report

Only 16 percent of heart attack survivors get the recommended amount of physical activity in the weeks after hospitalization, according to a study by researchers at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) and NewYork-Presbyterian.
The study was published online earlier this week in theJournal of the American College of Cardiology.
Exercise has been proven to lower the risk of having another heart attack in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), which includes heart attack and unstable angina (chest pain).
Current guidelines strongly recommend that ACS patients get at least 30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity, such as brisk walking, at least five days per week in the first two weeks after hospital discharge.
Previous studies, which relied on self-reporting, have been unable to provide a reliable estimate of how many patients achieve this goal.
In this study, the researchers measured the amount and intensity of physical activity with a wearable activity monitor in 620 heart attack survivors. Participants were instructed to wear the device for 10 hours, or more, at least three days per week during the first month after hospitalization.
In prior decades, heart attack survivors were counseled to remain in bed for many weeks, said Ian M. Kronish, MD, MPH, Florence Irving Assistant Professor of Medicine at CUMC, assistant professor of medicine in Columbias Center for Behavioral Cardiovascular Health, cardiologist at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia and lead author of the paper.
Despite current evidence to the contrary, many ACS patients fear that straining their heart through exertion will cause chest pain or another heart attack.
Clinician-supervised exercise programs for heart attack survivors have been shown to counteract patients fears and encourage more physical activity. However, participation in these programs remains poor.
Researchers and clinicians need to find ways of getting more people to participate in such supervised exercise programs, Dr. Kronish said.
Nowadays, there are several consumer products that can be used to track physical activity at home. Perhaps the future holds ways to remotely monitor patients and to provide positive feedback and counseling outside of a hospital setting.
