Mamadou Sakho hails fitness regime after win on Crystal Palace debut – ESPN FC

Sam Allardyce has only compliments to shower on his team for their showing against Middlesbrough.
Mamadou Sakho has said his impressive Crystal Palace debut against Middlesbrough on Saturday was down to an intense fitness programme.
Sakho made his first competitive appearance since April in Palace's 1-0 win at Selhurst Park.
The Liverpool centre-half made a loan switch to Palace at the end of January after being frozen out at Liverpool under manager Jurgen Klopp.
"My last game was 10 months ago but during this time I have been working hard on my fitness and, after my performance, it has all been worthwhile," Sakho said.
"I am really proud to be involved in this victory, and from my point of view it is always about me giving my best when I am out on the pitch for the club, the team and the supporters.
"We played 12 against 11 in this game because the fans were really good for us and they gave us a lot of courage and confidence. It was nice to get the result for them.
"We played very well as a team, gave a strong performance and deserved the three points in a really difficult game."
Liverpool had been looking to offload Sakho on a permanent deal in the January window, demanding 20 million for the France international.
However, they eventually settled on a 2m loan fee with Palace, who will cover the player's full wages.
Palace boss Sam Allardyce praised Sakho and said: "It was a nice performance.
"It was his first Premier League game this season, so we spent a good bit of time on his fitness and he's accepted that he had to put that extra work in."

Dogs who work: Honey at Gauntlet Fitness – Daily Ardmoreite

Marsha Millermarsha.miller@ardmoreite.com
Editors note: Its no secret there are hard working dogs and cats. But while some are tending to traditional animal jobs, like herding cattle or mousing in barns, others are going to work with their owners and are performing people jobs at local stores, offices or job sites, like Honey, who has become an irreplaceable member of the staff at Gauntlet Fitness.
Names and occupation: Sometimes business owners dont realize the benefits of having a pet employee. Shawn and Ashley Mason, owners of Gauntlet Fitness, were prime examples of those who didnt didnt have a clue about the talented assets a pet employee could offer. In fact, they didnt think they needed a pet, much less a Pit Bull and especially not a Pit Bull that would be part of the staff in the gym. But, then fate, or maybe a doggie angel, stepped in and knocked on the Masons hearts. Honey, did her part too. She gave it her best shot during two interviews at Ardmore Animal Shelter one that convinced Ashley and and second one that clinched the deal with Shawn. Now Honey is much more than just part of the Mason family, she is a symbol to everyone who works out at the gym of what quiet, unassuming but courageous determination can accomplish.
Special talents: Honey is everything a Pit Bull is not suppose to be. Shes friendly, but she doesnt demand attention. Instead, she waits for permission before she meets and greets. Shes patient. Shes kind. Shes smart. She has a sweet and tender temperament. Most of all she radiates a quiet inner strength and a strong will. We dont know her story, Mason said. All we know is a Lone Grove firefighter found her, with a ripped ear and took her to the shelter. Whatever unfortunate experiences and hurts haunt her past, Honey has overcome her history. She moved on when she moved in with Shawn and Ashley and their three children and shes an example to every person training at the gym that where theres a will theres a way. She knows everybody and she works out with everybody, Mason said. She loves all our clients, especially Danny Wollaston (a well known dog rescuer). Honeys the encourager while shes on the job at the gym. Those working out cant help but try a little harder and work a little longer with Honey by their side. And just when someones about to get discouraged, Honey turns into a clown and rights whats wrong. Just a little doggie magic when its needed. When she does has a moment to herself, she mounts the front stairs and goes to the windows overlooking West Main Street where she can watch those passing by.
What makes Honey perfect for her people job? Although Honey is a bit reserved with those she doesnt know, she has a playful and energetic run and play battle rope side too. Shes always ready for those who would like to add a bit of cardio to their workout and shes always ready for playtime when her human kids, Liam, Addison and Ava come home from school. True to her breed she is by nature, an athlete with an impressive rock solid muscular build. Mason says the only time Honey isnt at the gym throughout the day in during kids classes. Why? Because some parents are apprehensive because shes a Pit Bull. We dont want anyone to worry. So Honey doesnt work out with the kids classes, he said, adding he hopes some day that will change. What we want people to know is that Pit Bulls are not bad or mean dogs. Honey is an excellent example of what her breed is really all about.
If you have or know of a dog or cat that works a people job let us know. Send an email to yournews@ardmoreite.com with the animals name, the name of the owner and where the special dog or cat works and contact information.

Hugh Jackman’s extreme diet that is the secret behind his sculpted Wolverine body – India.com

Hugh Jackmanis perhaps better known for his sculpted body than his acting skills (not that we are complaining). A no-nonsense nutrition plan, brutal workout regime and lots of mental strength were the things that transformed him from a man to badass Wolverine. At an age, where things start slowing down, Hugh is scaling new heights. Hugh started training under David Kingsbury for his role as Wolverine and follows a progressive overload body training. He uses loads on the basic bench press, deadlifts, squats and pullups and these weights vary with each set. He also rely on the classic techniques like cicuts and supersets to incinerate fat and exhaust muscles. He does not believe in bulking up. He follows a balanced workout plan and does hard exercise that are not followed by others. The actor is in his best shape ever.(ALSO READHow to lose weight fast: 11 quick and easy ways to lose a lot of weight fast).
Recently, Hugh Jackman was the guest on The Graham Norton Show along with Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen. The actor was on the show to talk about his the upcoming X-Men movie Logan, where he will be playing the clawed mutant for the last time. The actor has played the role of Wolverine since 2000. In the episode of the show, when the host Graham asked Hugh to describe the build up to the day he had to shoot a shirtless scene for the movie, the actor finally revealed the secret to his chiseled look.(ALSO READThese hot photos of fit Indian female bodybuilder Harj Hadani will inspire you to start working out).
The actor said that for a perfect body, he was following a method called dehydration. As per the actor, you can lose around 10 pounds or 4.5 kilos of weight by this method. You will lose the water from under the surface of your skin. To lose weight by this method, you will have to drink a lot of water and then stop drinking water completely. So, as your body is used to urinate a lot due to drinking of water, you will continue urinating even without drinking any water. The food you will eat will also suck the water from your body. This will cause the body to lose water and bring down the weight. The actor drank about 10 liters of water a day and then stopped drinking it 30 hours before the shoot. So, for the next 10 hours, he was urinating frequently.
However the actor has warned against trying this method without supervisionas it is not very healthy. It leads to side effects like headache among other things. He also mentioned that he was eating a meal consisting of steamed chicken and broccoli every two hours to maintain his toned body. He was eating a total of 6500 calories a day.
So while this extreme diet might give you a physique like Hugh Jackman, know that this cannot be taken lightly and must not be done without supervision.

How ‘the sultana exercise’ can help you lose weight – The Independent

We all have to eat to stay alive, but how often do you actually savour your food?
The concept of mindful eating is nothing new - for years, health gurus have extolled the virtues of appreciating your food instead of mindlessly shoving it into your mouth.
Studies have shown that eating mindfully results in weightloss with minimal effort, but just how exactly do you do it?
One expert has revealed her tried and tested technique to help us eat mindfully - its called 'the sultana exercise'.
According to Charlotte Thaarup, Australian clinical mindfulness consultant and director of The Mindfulness Clinic, doing this single exercise with a sultana is all we need to do to keep us eating consciously.
According to Thaarup, the sultana exercise could help you eat better and binge less, the Mail Onlinereports.
Mindful eating has for a while been touted as a way to help people re-establish a healthy relationship with food.
Whether you want to lose weight, call a truce in the war with your dear body, change your relationship with food, or reduce your daily stress by making healthier choices, Thaarup says eating mindfully can help.
For a lot of people, however, eating mindfully becomes harder when dining with other people - its hard to pay attention to what your companions are saying if youre also focussing on every mouthful you chew.
But if you can manage it, mindful eating really could be the easiest way of all not only to stop overeating but also to get more pleasure from food.
One study, for example, found that people who ate chocolate mindfully were left in a better mood than those who didnt bother to really enjoy it.
So perhaps its time to grab a sultana and mindfully eat your way to health, happiness and harmony.

Lose weight and gain muscle with health and fitness expert Gavin R. Seymour – Plymouth Herald

Comments(2)
Welcome to Week Two of an eight-week Plymouth Herald health and fitness column series.
The column is written by one of the leading health and fitness experts in the South West, Gavin R. Seymour.
Gavin has appeared as the trainer on numerous BBC One documentaries, he is a Plymouth University associate lecturer, he has written nationally-recognised course units for personal training and nutrition courses, and he was previously the lead trainer for projects that equated to over 47 stone of weight loss, as part of The Herald-backed I Love Life campaign.
This week's video shows the best muscle-building exercise and the best calorie-burning exercise.
There is a minefield of information on what to eat to lose weight and what to eat to gain muscle mass.
WEEK ONE: Learn expert weight loss tips with Gavin R Seymour
WEEK THREE: Top exercise tips from health and fitness expert Gavin R. Seymour
In my role of advising people on nutrition it is vital that I am very critical of the information that I look at from nutritional research and programmes used by experts in particular fields such as working with athletes.
In this article I will give some key tips on nutrition that you can apply for yourself.
Marketing experts will do what they can to make a particular product appeal to us. This may sound obvious but it can often sway opinions. There are various 'pyramid' scheme nutritional weight loss products around that could be conceived as in that category.
A huge number of supplements are not necessary for the average gym user and may only provide marginal benefits to the elite athletes promoting the products. An example of the profit vs health dilemma is Coca-Cola frequently sponsors sporting events to make profit from sales, despite having limited nutritional value for an athlete.
These type of diets are difficult to stick to and often cause a loss of muscle mass as well as fat mass. Fat is seen as a survival buffer for the body in the event of a famine and muscle mass will often be sacrificed in response to low calorific intakes.
Very low calorie diets are generally under 1,000 calories and should only be used under medical supervision and recommendation if deemed beneficial in the treatment for certain medical conditions. Aim to create a slight and sustainable deficit in calories if looking to lose weight.
In order to gain muscle mass from resistance training sessions, more calories will be needed to be consumed compared to a normal weight maintaining intake.
Protein will be needed in order for the muscles to repair and grow effectively, however for most people the natural increase in calories will produce their protein needs via normal foods, like fish, beans, eggs etc and supplementation such as flavoured protein powder isn't necessary.
It is common to hear advice regarding reducing carbohydrate content for weight loss and while I agree to some extent there is a balance whereby a certain level of carbohydrates is needed. Firstly carbohydrates are required for the optimal function of the brain and central nervous system.
Having a reasonable carbohydrate content in your diet can also provide performance and recovery benefits for your workouts. In general aim to eat whole food and complex carbohydrates, avoiding processed simple carbohydrates.
Cooking is a very important skill for lifestyle change, with simple and effective meals that take minimal time.
Firstly from a cost perspective you can often cook a huge amount of food for the average price of a takeaway or restaurant meal. Cooking and preparing gives you the best chance for success.
To save time, try cooking multiple meals at the same time or making extra portions of the same meal for another day.
If you have any questions you can contact Gavin via http://www.gavinrseymour.com, 07527 009739, or via 'Elixir Movement' on Facebook. Gavin can assist you with your weight loss goals with nutritional support, injury prevention / sports massage, and tailored exercise in a group or one on one.

Prebiotics could stop stress from harming sleep quality – Medical News Today

When going through stressful times, it can be hard to get a good night's sleep. Now, researchers suggest that dietary prebiotics might be effective against stress-induced insomnia.
First study author Robert Thompson, of the Department of Integrative Physiology at the University of Colorado Boulder, and colleagues recently reported their findings in the journal Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience.
Current guidelines recommend that adults should aim to get between 7 and 9 hours sleep each night for optimal health and well-being. However, around 1 in 3 of us fail to meet these recommendations.
According to the American Psychological Association, stress is a key player in sleep loss. Approximately 47 percent of adults in the United States report a lack of sleep due to stress, and 21 percent report that poor sleep further exacerbates their stress.
Thompson and team note that previous studies have suggested that stress can alter gut bacteria in a way that interferes with the sleep-wake cycle. Until now, it was unclear whether prebiotics might help to improve sleep in the face of stress.
Prebiotics are nondigestible food components - found in chicory, artichokes, onions, leeks, and other vegetables - that fuel the growth of "good" gut bacteria. Research has indicated that when these good bacteria digest prebiotic fiber, they release byproducts that can affect brain function.
For their study, Thompson and colleagues put male rats on one of two diets for 4 weeks: a diet supplemented with prebiotics or a standard chow diet (the control diet).
On analyzing fecal samples from the rodents after 4 weeks, the team found that rats that were fed the prebiotic diet showed an increase in beneficial gut bacteria - including Lactobacillus rhamnosus, known to aid immune system function - compared with rats fed the control diet.
Using electroencephalography to measure the rats' sleep-wake cycles, the researchers found that rats fed the prebiotic diet also had more non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep (the restorative sleep stage) compared with rodents fed the control diet.
"Given that sufficient NREM sleep and proper nutrition can impact brain development and function and that sleep problems are common in early life, it is possible that a diet rich in prebiotics started in early life could help improve sleep, support the gut microbiota and promote optimal brain/psychological health," note the authors.
When both groups of rats were exposed to acute stress (induced by tail shocks), the researchers found that the group fed the prebiotic diet had more rapid eye movement (REM) sleep than the group fed the control diet. The team notes that REM is the sleep stage associated with better recovery from stress.
Additionally, the researchers found that the rats fed the prebiotic diet were less likely to experience abnormalities in body temperature that can arise as a result of stress-induced alterations to gut bacteria.
While further studies are needed to better determine how prebiotics affect sleep quality, the researchers believe that their findings suggest that dietary prebiotics might offer benefits.
The team concludes:
"These data are the first to show that a diet rich in prebiotics can modulate the sleep-wake cycle both before and after stress and induce stress-protective effects in diurnal physiology and the gut microbiota.
Our results, however, cannot address how increases in Lactobacillus rhamnosus or other changes in microbial community structure contribute to the observed effects of a diet rich in prebiotics and more work is necessary to further elucidate the potential mechanisms. Nonetheless, our work is the first to demonstrate that consumption of a prebiotic diet can provide stress-protective effects on sleep-wake behavior."
