EXCLUSIVE: Mama June’s Weight Loss Surgeries Revealed — How She Went From 460 Pounds to a Size 4 – Entertainment Tonight

Playing EXCLUSIVE: Mama June's Weight Loss Surgeries Revealed -- How She Went From 460 Pounds to a Size 4
Mama June's much hyped stunning physical transformation is the result of not only multiple surgeries, but of plenty of hard work and an entire mental overhaul, her daughters, Alana and Lauryn Thompson, tell ET exclusively.
ET sat down with 11-year-old "Honey Boo Boo," 17-year-old "Pumpkin" -- as they're known to Here Comes Honey Boo Boo fans -- as well as Mama June's show trainer, Kenya Crooks, on Wednesday, when they dished about her dramatic weight loss. Mama June's journey is being chronicled on her new WE tv docu-dramedy, Mama June: From Not to Hot, which debuts on Friday.
"She had gastric sleeve back in May of 2015, and then she slowly started losing weight, and the reason she got the gastric sleeve was because she hit a plateau -- she couldn't lose any weight," Pumpkin tells ET's Jennifer Peros, referring to the procedure that makes a patient's stomach smaller. "And then it came to a point where [the trainer] had to step in because she hit another plateau with the gastric sleeve, and wasn't losing any more weight."

Mama June, 37, also got surgery to remove excess skin after dramatically dropping pounds.
"Her stomach started looking gross," Pumpkin candidly says. "It was hanging from where she lost so much weight, and her arms and her chin, so she got [the skin on] her stomach removed."
The mother of four later got surgery on her breasts.
"She got her boobies done," Pumpkin reveals. "She got them from a 44 long to 36 up."
Mama June started her weight loss journey at 460 pounds, and a teaser for her new reality show suggests that she's now down to a size 4. However, Pumpkin says her mom still struggles with seeing herself as a much heavier person.
"I think that her biggest thing [she has to] overcome is that fact that she still thinks of herself as a bigger person, because, even to this day, like, a couple of days ago we had a conversation, and ... she looked in the mirror and was like, 'I'm still fat,'" Pumpkin shares. "And I guess because she's seen herself as a bigger person all these years, she doesn't realize how small she is."
"That's what she's used to doing, and when you're a bigger person, that's how you disguise all of that -- through wearing bigger clothes," Crooks weighs in. "So, now, we're having to transform her mind even more so ... because she has curves now, she looks awesome."
Another huge challenge? Getting Mama June to stay in hiding until the show is ready for her big reveal.
"It is very hard because mama, she is a very stubborn person, and she wants to do everything," Pumpkin explains. "She's like, 'Alright, I've got to go to the store,' and we're like, 'Mama, no, you need to stay in the house because if somebody gets a picture with you...'"
"Even if she does go out, she has to be, like, suited up," she adds about her mother's disguise.
Most important, Mama June's daughters says she is much happier after her significant weight loss, and feeling much more confident.
"I kind of didn't want her to do it before, but after she did it, I'm very happy," Honey Boo Boo acknowledges, referring to the risks of weight loss surgery.
"I'm not trying to be all R-rated or whatever, but, she'll walk around the house in a pair of underwear!" Pumpkin later jokes about her mom's self-confidence these days. "I'm like, 'June, put your pants on, put your pants on!'"

The network has called Mama June's weight loss "the most shocking transformation in reality TV history."
"I'm changing my body and my love life," Mama June says with determination in one teaser. "I'm about to start the biggest transformation of my life. This surgery is the scariest thing I've ever done, but there is a skinnier person inside of me."
Mama June: From Not to Hot debuts Friday, Feb. 24 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on WE tv.

Drellich: Pablo Sandoval staying mum on his new diet – Boston Herald

FORT MYERS Hes on a talk-free diet.
Pablo Sandoval has no problem sharing videos on social media to prove just how hard hes worked.
I just want to keep the fans updated (about) what I was doing, he said yesterday.
No videos of dinner time, though. What he eats apparently is off limits.
Everyone knew the guy could lose weight and exercise if he applied himself. The Red Sox third baseman did that in his San Francisco Giants days.
But what hes eating now, and how hes changed his diet, seems to be a sensitive topic.
I got a program. I got a program, its all included, Sandoval said. So I dont worry about that. I got a program, its all included. Im going to continue to keep doing my program. So thats my main goal.
Well, thats descriptive.
Maybe there are foods he likes that have been taken away. Lets start there.
What do you want me to say it is? Sandoval said. I dont miss anything, man. I dont miss anything.
The first man on earth to never miss anything while dieting, ladies and gentlemen. How about ice cream? Everyone likes ice cream. Can you still eat ice cream?
I dont want to tell you about my secrets, he said.
Cookies and cream now is proprietary information.
Why in the world would food be a secret?
No, Sandoval said. Everything.
Every bit of food the Sox third baseman eats is a secret. This makes a lot of sense.
Everything, Sandoval said. Why do you want me to tell you everything I do?
Theres nothing more American than baseball, apple pie and diets. Sandovals an unrelatable figure, making a ton of money while being out of shape for the past two years. But weight loss, or at least the attempt at it, average Joes can understand.
Now, Sandoval has no obligation to be relatable. Fans wont accept him unless he plays well, anyway. But letting people in on his calorie-control effort wouldnt be a bad olive branch.
But I dont want to tell them what Im going to do, Sandoval said. Its my program.
A big, secret program. Scott Lauber of ESPN.com reported Sandoval put his new wife, Yulimar, in charge of his low-carb diet, and that she worked with a nutritionist.
Perhaps its Red Sox nutritionist Glen Tobias, formerly of the New York Jets and hired ahead of this season, who is handling the matter.
Manager John Farrell said someone has been overseeing Sandoval.
Thats part of our medical staff, Farrell said, declining to name the person. We have our nutritionist.
The teams previous nutritionist, Nancy Clark, as well as a Red Sox source said she left the club under amicable conditions that were unrelated to Sandoval.
The person that hired me left, and new people bring in new people, said Clark, who has a private practice in Newton Highlands. I did it for three years, and Im very glad to have my summers back.
Pablo actually, when he was down in Fort Myers, he worked with another dietician who speaks Spanish and lives near Miami, and she did a lot of work with him.
He was a hard worker, Clark added. He spent this past year really getting things together. I mean he really wants to succeed. And he wants to prove himself, and thats what he was saying. ... Hes got a work ethic. I wish him the best.
Overeating, which Sandovals former trainer Ethan Banning has said was the third basemans pitfall, is no small concern. Psychology comes into play.
Hes worked on his all-around, Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said when asked about dieting. Hes worked on nutrition, hes worked on conditioning, hes worked on mental, hes worked on a lot of different parts of the whole thing to make it work. But I think for him, its important to tackle all aspects of it, not just the conditioning end of it.
Farrell noted the importance of a diet, too.
I think if you just use the basic adage more out than more in, hes in the positive column, Farrell said. But its much more detailed than that. Theres been a combination of the work hes put in, the effort hes put in, and I guess a more scientific approach to his diet and what works best for him.
Unless Sandovals eating out of a test tube, science seems a stretch.
OK, lets make it real simple: Is your diet different than its ever been before?
No comment, Sandoval said.
Seems salty.

Hunting in the Himalayas: A predation analysis of snow leopards and wolves – PLOS Research News

Killing livestock creates conflict between top predators and communities that graze animals. This presents a major challenge for conserving snow leopards, which are endangered, and Himalayan wolves, which are rare. These wolves prefer the open grasslands and alpine meadows that are also frequented by pastoral herders, and snow leopards prefer the steep terrain associated with mountainous pastures. To assess the prey preferences of these carnivores, Madhu Chetri from the Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences, Norway, and colleagues analyzed DNA and hairs in 182 snow leopard droppings and 57 wolf droppings collected in the central Himalayas, Nepal.
Chetri answered some questions about his recently published PLOS ONE study below.
What first sparked your interest in science?
MC: I grew up in the countryside, and I spent most of my childhood days in the woods. Since then, I have been attracted to nature and fascinated by wild animals. This magnetic pull led me to study science.
What drew you to studying the diets of snow leopards and wolves in the Himalayas?
MC: More than a decade of work experience in the Himalayas revealed that endangered snow leopards and rare wolves the two top predators are always considered to be a threat by the pastoral communities and blamed for livestock losses. Since diet studies can explain the real situation, I became more interested. Studying their diets also helps understand food choice and preferences as well as the abundance and status of their prey, which are both essential for formulating long-term conservation strategies.
You found that livestock comprised around a quarter of the Himalayan snow leopard and wolf diet. Was this a smaller or larger portion of their diet than you expected?
MC: Around a quarter of the snow leopard and wolf diet is much less than expected. The complaints from pastoral communities regarding livestock losses are common, suggesting that livestock would comprise a larger portion of these predators diets. Also site-specific losses are highly variable.
What implications do your findings have for conservation of snow leopards and wolves?
MC: The present findings are a part of the larger ongoing research on snow leopard ecology in the central Himalayas. The main aim was to investigate the abundance, food choice and preferences, and evaluate the level of conflicts. When these are all integrated, the final outcome will provide meaningful conservation implications for the long-term survival of the snow leopards, wolves and their prey species.
Are there any limitations to your study?
MC: The main limitation of our study is the location of grid cells. A random or systematic selection of sampling grid cells was not feasible due to geographical, cultural and logistical constraints.
What are the next steps for your research?
MC: Although livestock constitutes a substantial proportion of the predators diets, little is known about the actual predation impact on the pastoral communities. Hence, the forthcoming work focuses on estimating livestock mortality rates and identifying factors associated with livestock loss. It will also evaluate snow leopard abundance and distribution in the central Himalayas.

Health Watch: Weight loss surgery reduces major health risks – Ithaca Journal

By John Mecenas, MD, Special to the Journal 6:49 p.m. ET Feb. 22, 2017
Dr. John Mecenas is a board certified general surgeon with advanced training in minimally invasive surgery and bariatric surgery.(Photo: Provided photo)
For adults and adolescents diagnosed with clinically severe obesity, bariatric surgery offers an effective, safe solution for weight loss that also reduces risks for developing diabetes and other illnesses.
Years of research has shown obesity is a complex disease and bariatric surgery, while highly effective, is just one component of a successful treatment plan. The Cayuga Center for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery at Cayuga Wellness Center has developed a program that links patients to specialists who manage health issues related to obesity as well as diet, nutrition, exercise and lifestyle modification for effective, long-term weight loss. Obesity treatment is undergoing a shift on when surgery is recommended. Earlier surgical care, when combined with other treatments, prevents many patients from developing other obesity-related illnesses.
Who should consider bariatric (weight-loss) surgery?
Bariatric surgery is considered for people with a body mass index (BMI) of greater than 40. However, you should also consider surgery if your BMI is equal to or greater than 35 and you have other obesity-related illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, heart disease, sleep apnea, debilitating joint problems and some types of cancers.
Why is weight-loss surgery, rather than dieting, recommended for people with clinically severe obesity?
Many studies show patients with extreme obesity are more successful in weight reduction with surgical treatment than with dieting or exercise alone. Numerous medical groups from the American Diabetes Association and the American Heart Association to federal health agencies including the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services recommend bariatric surgery for effective weight loss in cases of severe obesity.
What types of bariatric surgery are available at Cayuga Medical Center?
Three types of minimally invasive, laparoscopic surgeries are used at Cayuga Medical Center.
Sleeve gastrectomy is among the most common bariatric surgeries used locally and nationally. During a sleeve procedure, the surgeon removes a section of the stomach. That creates a stomach shaped like a sleeve, which reduces stomach volume and induces weight loss.
Gastric bypass surgery, also called Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, is still considered the standard bariatric procedure by many surgeons. The surgery includes two parts. First, the surgeon staples your stomach, creating a small pouch in the upper section. That procedure makes the stomach smaller, so you eat less to feel full. Next, the intestine is re-routed to bypass the majority of the stomach and part of the small intestine. The bypass reduces the absorption of food.
Both gastric bypass surgery and sleeve gastrectomy produce other physiologic and metabolic changes in the body that can increase weight loss and control obesity associated illnesses.
A third procedure called adjustable gastric banding is less frequently used than the other two bariatric surgeries. In gastric banding, a ring with an inner inflatable band is placed around the top of your stomach to create a small pouch. This makes you feel full after eating a small amount of food. After surgery, the surgeon can adjust the size of the opening from the pouch to the rest of your stomach.
How long do the surgeries take, how many days would I be hospitalized and is the surgery covered by insurance?
Depending on the type of surgery, the procedure takes one to two hours and the hospital stay may be one to two nights, but sometimes not require an over-night stay. The three surgeries offered are covered by Medicare and most private insurance plans.
How does a patient prepare for bariatric surgery?
Discussing your concerns with your primary care provider is always a good first step. Your primary physician can help by referring you to a surgeon. The surgeon will advise you on tests needed prior to surgery and precautions to make in the days preceding the operation. In addition, starting and following a weight loss and exercise program for several months prior to surgery may increase weight loss and improve patient outcomes.
What should a patient look for in a bariatric surgery program?
First, find an experienced, board certified surgeon who has specialized training in laparoscopic bariatric surgery. Patients should look for a program that links various aspects of their care. A team approach is the best way to treat obesity because the causes and consequences of the disease are so varied. Patients should look for a program that links various aspects of their care. The program at the Cayuga Center for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery works to include a patients primary care physician, board certified laparoscopic surgeons and a certified bariatrician, who is a medical doctor specializing in obesity treatment. The program also involves nurses, health educators, dieticians and exercise physiologists. Developing that continuum of care is the goal of the Cayuga Center for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and the Cayuga Center for Healthy Living.
Following surgery many patients benefit from joining a weight-loss surgery support group. Regular meetings for bariatric surgery patients are held at Cayuga Medical Center.
Dr. Mecenas is a board certified general surgeon with advanced training in minimally invasive surgery and bariatric surgery. He began the Weight-loss Surgery Program at Cayuga Medical Center in 2002 and is now the director of the Cayuga Center for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. I’ve Spent 10 Years Helping People Lose Weight Here Are My Best Tips – Greatist

For 10 years, Ive been the force behind MyBodyTutor.com, which simplifies the weight-loss process into practical, sustainable behaviors that help you lose weight and actually keep it off. It hasnt always been easy, but I believed enough in my program to quit my comfortable job for it. Ive since made a career out of working with clients who have "tried everything" but just havent managed to keep the weight off. One client had attempted 16 different programs before finding success with me.
The truth is, you can lose weight with almost any program, but sustaining that weight loss is a different story altogether. My program has been a success because clients can fly the nest after acquiring the necessary skillsI dont want anyone to come back as repeat business. Here the top weight-loss strategies that make my clients so successful.
Tension relief is one of the top reasons we overeat and make poor food choices. When something causes us to feel tense, we seek to alleviate that feeling often with overly indulgent food and drinks. As we get older, we make less time for fun, which leads to burnout.
What defines fun for you? Consider signing up for art classes, salsa lessons, volunteering, board games, meditation, yoga, even cooking healthier spins on your favorite foods. Focusing on fun might sound trite, but there's a good reason my most successful clients create time for it: The more fun we have, the less we'll rely on food and drink to create it for us.
...what youre craving is avoidance. When we indulge, were after the experience of eatingthe escape and distraction. So when you want to eat an entire pint of ice cream, what youre really after is that sense of reward. But food wont give you what you're truly looking for, so when youre craving something that will hamper your goals, ask yourself: "If I could use a magic button to change something in my life right now, what would I use it for?" This will help you identify whats really bothering you. For example, if youre unhappy with your career, or youre seeking a better relationship with your partner, identifying these issues will help you map out a plan of action instead of covering up a desire with temporary relief in the form of dessert.
You know how some people can work their butts off in the gymeven with a trainerand they dont end up looking any different? You can't out-exercise a poor diet; what you do between exercise matters most. While exercise is the key to energy and a better mood, diet is the key to weight loss.
We often have to battle between our short-term, irrational mind and our long-term, rational mind. When were hungry, stressed, or tired, its harder to make good choices. Besides, when was the last time you were "in the mood" for grilled chicken and vegetables when you felt ravenous? Sure, you might not always follow through with your healthy-eating plans, but the chances youll do so increase dramatically when you actually have a plan in the first place. You dont get any bonus points for using heroic willpower rather than simple planning, so why not make it easier on yourself? My most successful clients always have healthy food ready to go in the fridgethis just makes good choices easier.
This might sound like common sense, but its not common practice. You cant expect to stick with a planthat wont work in the long run, but people keep attempting absurd fad diets. Forget about them! You can only follow a cookie, shake, grapefruit, cabbage, no-carb, and no-fun diet for so longand my most successful clients avoid these diets. Before you start any weight-loss program, ask yourself, "Can I see myself eating like this in five years from now?" If the answer is no, then the diet youre thinking about starting isnt going to work. Give yourself a chance to succeed from the start.
One of the top reasons people are overweight is because they eat when they're emotionally hungry, not physically hungry. Physical hunger comes on gradually and can be satisfied with any food. It passes what I call the "Broccoli Test."
Emotional hunger comes on suddenly. It feels urgentand is marked by specific food cravings. You can have snack after snack, and nothing hits the spot. This is because you're not hungry for foodyou're hungry for something else. So when youre about to eat, pause and ask yourself, "Am I hungry or am I eating to change the way I feel?" This will allow you to catch yourself if you're about to eat for emotional reasons, not out of true hunger.
Ill never forget when a client told me that before starting one of her many failed diet attempts, she was told to sign a contract stating shed never indulge in any of her favorite desserts again. If only it were that easythats like saying "Dont be sad" to someone whos depressed. Its ridiculous. Never indulging again isnt sustainable... or even desirable.
You should eat treats when theyre special to you. My rule is that your special indulgence should pass the "Will I remember this in two weeks?" test. Most of the indulgences we eat arent remarkabletheyre bags of chips or boxes of stale-tasting cookies from a convenience store. The idea is to make the most of routine meals and indulge when its truly worth your while. Wait for a memorable treat like a high-quality pastry from your favorite shop.
The real secret to sustainable weight loss is that there is no secret. It's about eating well, exercising and doing these consistently. Understanding what gets in the way of consistencyand how to be more steady in your effortsis the only way to stick with a plan and get the results you really want.
Adam Gilbert is the founder of MyBodyTutor.com, an online program that solves the lack of consistency faced by chronic dieters. You can follow Adam on hisblog,Instagram, andTwitter.

Why Is Kim Kardashian Wearing a Garbage Bag Sweatsuit to Lose Weight? – Shape Magazine

Sometimes, Kim Kardashian is relatable. We totally felt for her when she dealt with anxiety after her Paris robberyand when shestuck by Kanye in a crisis. On the other hand, she's been known to do some pretty extreme things to get the appearance she wants, like wearing a corset and getting her stretch marks removed. While we're all for doing things to make yourself feel good about how you look, sometimes Kim takes it a little too far.
Case in point: one of her most recent Snapchat stories. The reality star pans the camera around her gym in the style of her usual workout Snaps, but instead of just showing off her moves of the day, Kim points the camera downward at herself to show that she's wearing a full-on garbage-bag-style sweatsuit. You might remember this style from this past summer when Khloe Kardashian shared why she wears one during cardio and weight workouts.
She's also added the caption "7 lbs to go to get to 115 lbs." But will wearing one of these actually help you drop weight? The short answer is yes, but the long answer is more complicated. "The garbage bag strategy is a highly-controversial, old-school thermogenic method that works for weight loss in a way that's similar to sitting in a sauna," says Mike Clancy, C.S.C.S. and founder of MikeClancyTraining. "You simply put your body in a heated environment so it starts to release water (sweat) to cool you down." This process continues until your body has returned to its normal temperature, usually when you stop exercising. "In this process of releasing water, your body can shrink down five to ten pounds," says Clancy. That might sound appealing, but he adds that "this method of sweating out the last few pounds is extremely dangerous because your body is dehydrated and the stress on your internal organs can quickly land you in a hospital." Yikes! So yeah, it's probably not a good idea to try this on your own.
In Kim's case, her Snap clearly shows that her trainer is there to supervise, but what's more worrying is that fans watching might think this is a good idea to try at home when they're trying to shed weight. But there's another important reason why you shouldn't use this method. "You'll gain the weight back quickly, most likely as soon as you start drinking water after your workout," says Dani Muckley, director of fitness at Studio Three in Chicago. In other words, the risk of dehydration is 100 percent not worth it.
So what can you do instead to help you lose those last few pounds? "A healthier alternative would be to realize that there truly is no quick fix to weight loss," says Muckley. "Instead, healthy weight loss is the result of a dedicated nutritional plan, workout regimen, and requisite recovery." We couldn't agree more. But if you do want to try a specific workout method, Clancy has a suggestion. "A safer alternative to this tactic would be doing a sustained, fasted cardio in the morning while drinking plenty of fluids," he says. That means you wait until after you work out to eat. "A favorite of my clients' is walking uphill on a treadmill on a high incline for 30 to 40 minutes before breakfast," he explains. And unlike Kim's strategy, this kind of cardio is more likely to use adipose tissue (aka fat) for workout fuel, so the results will actually last.

Eat to lose: The 7 best foods to help you shed pounds – Fox News

Diets are all about cutting calories, right?
Well, maybe not.
If youve ever tried following a commercial diet, you know counting calories and weighing yourself can derail your goals completely. And while it may seem like restricting your intake of food is the best way to shed pounds, consuming enough calories is actually key.
To get the scoop on the foods that can help you get to that target weight, Fox News talked to Lauren Blake, RD, LDN, manager of sports nutrition at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, to find out how to eat your way to the body of your dreams.
Avocado
Despite previous attitudes toward fat, the healthy kind shouldnt be your foe, a 2016 study published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology suggests. Avocado contains healthy fats that can help you stay full and satisfied, Blake said. I like to call avocado natures butter, Blake, who recommended smearing it on a piece of whole-wheat toast, told Fox News. If I dont have avocado in my house, its time to go to the store!
Berries
A 2015 study published in the journal BMJ found that people whose diets were rich in flavonoids which are present in foods like berries, onions and even wine tended to gain less weight as they aged. Blake is also a fan of them for their high fiber and water content. Theyre a bit lower on the glycemic index, so theyre not gonna spike your blood sugar as quickly, she said.
6 PANTRY STAPLES THAT MAY HELP WARD OFF ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE
Lentils and beans
Fibrous foods like lentils and beans help you stay fuller longer, Blake explained. Fiber comes from all plant foods, and typically, plants have more calories so you can eat more of them, she said. Id rather be told I can eat more of something than less of something! Research backs up that notion: A 2015 study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine suggested simply focusing on fiber may offer more benefits than following a more restrictive diet plan.
Lean protein
Fatty fish like salmon, which is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, and lean, non-dark meat like chicken or turkey can also help ward off unwanted pounds, Blake said. Its protein, whether from plants or animals, can help keep you full, she explained. Part of the Mediterranean diet, lean proteins have long been hailed as powerful weight-loss tools, several studies suggest.
9 FOODS TO HELP BOOST YOUR LIBIDO NATURALLY
Non-starchy veggies
For weight loss, Blake advises her clients to fill half of their plates with non-starchy vegetables like bell peppers, cauliflower, mushrooms, broccoli, asparagus and Brussels sprouts. Starchy veggies, on the other hand, include potatoes, peas and corn. In a 2015 study published in PLOS One, Harvard University researchers found that, after 24 years, men and women who consumed non-starchy produce, which is higher in fiber and lower in carbs, tended to lose weight. Like berries, non-starchy foods are lower on the glycemic index, meaning they lead to fewer blood sugar spikes and less hunger.
Whole grains
Although wheat and bread alone have become topics for debate in holistic wellness circles, Blake said whole grains which are also rich in fiber are an important part of a healthy diet. That doesnt mean you should binge on bread, though! I love things like brown rice and oatmeal, Blake said, [because] those are really great whole grains that typically have a little more fiber than bread. If youre going to opt for bread, Blake recommended looking for the 100 percent whole-wheat variety.
7 WRINKLE-FIGHTING FOODS PROBABLY ALREADY IN YOUR KITCHEN
Dark chocolate
Also rich in flavonoids and healthy fats, dark chocolate has become somewhat of a superfood for weight loss in recent years. Research has linked its consumption to everything from curbed sweet cravings to reduced blood sugar spikes. Blake suggested enjoying a piece of the treat in bar form or mixing dark cocoa powder into a protein-packed smoothie with almond or peanut butter. Go ahead, indulge!

Man loses 50 pounds by playing a VR game – The Daily Dot

Virtual reality gives you the chance to experience new worlds, play the most immersive gaming experience available to modern consumers, and even get some indoor exercisesome pretty darn effective exercise, it turns out. One HTC Vive owner has managed to lose more than 50 pounds over the past five months by regularly playing a game on his VR headset.
In an interview with UploadVR, Job Stauffer explained how he lost 50 pounds playing the VR game Soundboxing. Soundboxingis a game that lets you select a video via YouTube that plays on your VR headset's screen. The game then projects objects that fly at you to the beat of the music. The aim of the game is to punch each of those objects while you hold a pair of controllers in your hands.
"When I first started out I spent like 20 minutes in the headset," Stauffer said. "Twenty then became 25 and 25 became 45 and 45 became an hour and sometimes an hour would become 90 minutes." He eventually bought a set of one pound weighted gloves, which "may not sound like much," but made his workout sessions even harder by forcing him to engage his upper body more. And as of last week, that's translated into some serious weight loss.
Stauffer began his journey after hitting more than 300 pounds on the scale. He was experiencing regular headaches and other health ailments, and his doctor essentially gave him an ultimatum: You need to start losing weight, or you could die. Unable to start jogging outside due the extra weight (and the serious impact it would have on his joints), and unmotivated by the idea of hitting the gym, Stauffer, who works in the video game industry, decided to give some VR-based workout games a try. Soundboxing ended up being a natural fit.
Now that he's lost this initial weight, he can safely head to the gym and add more traditional workouts such as weight lifting and rowing to the mix, too.
Despite sounding rather sweaty, Stauffer's experience is inspiring others to give VR-based exercise a try using Soundboxing and other games. Perhaps this is the beginning of a new home fitness revolution. Is there a Jane Fonda VR app out there?

Diet Doc Reminds Consumers that the hCG Diet is not a Viable Weight Loss Strategy – Marketwired (press release)

WESTON, WV--(Marketwired - February 23, 2017) - The physicians and researchers at Diet Doc medical weight loss are urging consumers to choose wisely when it comes to weight loss strategies this year. Certain diets are gaining popularity due to an enormous internet presence, which leaves little room for proven, researched based weight loss strategies. This can lead many individuals to make unsafe dietary choices simply because a fad has allegedly produced satisfactory results for other dieters. The hGG diet is a prime example of this. Produced during pregnancy, the human chorionic gonadotropin hormone (hCG) is purported to stimulate weight loss in conjunction with a calorie restrictive diet plan (only 500 calories per day are to be consumed). Supporters claim that HCG injections, drops or tablets target and eliminate long-stored fat reserves within the body. Over the past few years, the marketing and promotion of the hCG diet for weight loss have grown astronomically on the internet and the vast majority of the information on hCG and its corresponding products offered online are designed to confuse and make profit from an unknowing public. The truth, is that the medical industry has never supported the hCG diet. In fact, since its emergence in the 1950s, it still has yet to be deemed effective, or safe by any reputable medical organization.
Consuming a mere 500 calories per day can lead to health problems and since hCG isn't FDA regulated, most online retailers are selling products that contain little to no hCG. Therefore, any quick weight loss that occurs from the hCG diet is due to starvation dieting. There are claims that hCG is a permanent cure for obesity and that patients who on the hCG diet are losing two pounds of fat per day. However, any legitimate weight loss expert knows that starvation dieting is dangerous and can cause more harm than good. Rapid muscle loss, excessive bloating, binge eating, weight rebounds, poor nutrition and low-energy are just a few of the potentially negative side effects of such diets. Lastly, many existing websites claim that hCG permanently resets the metabolism. But experts suggest that any method one utilizes to lose weight, whether it be diet, exercise or gastric bypass surgery, once the weight is off long-term, a consistent weight maintenance regimen must be implemented to keep the weight and health in check.
