Strava fitness app arrives for Apple Watch Series 2 – SlashGear

The fitness app Strava has arrived for the Apple Watch Series 2, the company behind it has announced. This gives athletes and other users the ability to use the Strava app and the Series 2 wearable without an iOS tether, and enables the fitness app to fully utilize the watchs GPS feature, among other things. This announcement follows Stravas support for Android Wear 2.0 launched earlier this month, likewise shedding the mobile tether.

The new Strava app version is 5.13.0, and it is available to download now from the App Store. Those who already have the app installed can expect to see an automatic update roll their way via their iPhone. Once updated/installed, the app enables athletes and fitness lovers to record data sans needing their iOS tether.

Recorded data includes heart rate, time, distance, pace, and the speed they were moving at, something also facilitated by the watchs GPS functionality. Says the company, the Apple Watch Series 2 is now among more than one hundred other wearables and devices that also work with Strava.

Speaking about the update, Stravas Head of Integration Mateo Ortega said:

Research and athlete feedback often drives new Strava features and integrations. Were excited to add to our growing list of compatible devices, and see this as the first step in providing our athletes an excellent Strava experience on the Apple Watch Series 2. Our athletes can look forward to continued updates as we strive to provide the best Watch experience possible.

Webinar Stresses Benefits of Aquatic Exercise for Cancer Patients – Benzinga

On February 23, 2017, HydroWorx will host a webinar focused on the advantages cancer patients receive when they engage in aquatic exercise during treatment. Led by Elizabeth McDonald of Gove County Medical Center, the event is scheduled from 1:00-2:00 p.m. E.S.T.

(PRWEB) February 21, 2017

Individuals who have been diagnosed with cancer are at risk for many conditions and problems directly related to surgery, treatment, therapy and management. Regular exercise in proper environments has been shown to benefit these patients, enabling them to enjoy better qualities of life despite their diseases. On February 23, 2017, 1:00-2:00 p.m. E.S.T., a dynamic HydroWorx webinar led by presenter Elizabeth McDonald, Director of Therapy Services at Kansas-based Gove County Medical Center, will highlight the value an advanced therapy pool with underwater treadmill pool can bring to those undergoing and recovering from cancer treatment.

From a scientific perspective, many studies have shown a direct correlation between cancer patient improvement and regular exercise:

McDonald's webinar, Aquatic Applications for Cancer Rehabilitation, will focus on the many reasons more oncologists and general physicians are pushing patients to get involved in exercise programs. Not only do they recognize that exercise programs encourage stamina but they know they positively affect the way the heart and lungs react to cancer medications and treatments. Because the majority of cancer patients are limited in how much impact they can withstand during exercise and physical therapy, an aquatic therapy environment can provide a more acceptable modality to those who cannot perform traditional land-based therapy during cancer rehabilitation.

Aquatic Applications for Cancer Rehabilitation participants will be introduced to a wide range of topics during the event, including:

Attendance is free, but pre-registration. is required to join the live discussion. At the end of the webinar, participants will have the opportunity to ask McDonald questions related to the educational content.

About Elizabeth McDonald

As a CPTA for 21 years, Elizabeth McDonald has been the director of Gove county Medical Center's therapy program for 15 years. She is a member of AACVPR and MOKSAACVPR, and is actively involved in the APTA's Aquatic Section. She received her degrees from Colby Community College and Pima Medical Institute Tucson. In addition to those degrees, she holds certifications in BLS and ACLS, and is a Falling Less in Kansas trainer.

Exercise Proves Key to Preventing Breast Cancer Recurrence – ConsumerReports.org

Its safe to say that any breast cancer survivor whos been through treatment wants to avoid having to go through it again. The risk of breast cancer recurrence is highly individual and varies according to the type and the stage of breast cancer you had. But a new research review published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, or CMAJ, sheds light on how various lifestyle changes may be able to improve anyones odds of preventing a breast cancer recurrence.

The most important one: exercise. The review authors found it can reduce a breast cancer recurrence by 40 percent. According to the study authors, "physical activity has the most robust effect of all lifestyle factors on reducing breast cancer recurrence."

Exercise has a benefit thats separate from weight control. It regulates hormone levels, improves insulin resistance, and reduces inflammation, says study co-author Ellen Warner, M.D., a professor of medicine at the University of Toronto and a medical oncologist at Torontos Sunnybrook Odette Cancer Centre.

Exercise can also help the depression, fatigue, lymphedema (swelling in the arm caused by removing lymph nodes), and stress that might accompany diagnosis and treatment, according toSusan Gilchrist, M.D., an associate professor of clinical cancer prevention and cardiology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

High-intensity exercise requires less time, more effort – Reno Gazette Journal

Brandi Schlossberg, Health Source 2:55 p.m. PT Feb. 21, 2017

From running sprints and jumping rope to hopping up and down on exercise boxes and benches, there are all kinds of ways to tap the get-fit benefits of high-intensity interval training (HIIT).(Photo: jacoblund, Getty Images/iStockphoto)

From running sprints and jumping rope to hopping up and down on exercise boxes and benches, there are all kinds of ways to tap the get-fit benefits of high-intensity interval training (HIIT). At the other end of the exercise spectrum, endurance training offers a diverse list of health-boosting options as well, such as long-distance runs and bike rides or cross-country skiing and hiking. Given that both categories of physical activity can improve overall wellness, choosing between HIIT and endurance training tends to be a matter of personal preference.

For any exercise regimen to be effective, you must be consistent. You have to know what type of person you are and what you find motivating so you will keep coming back regularly, said Jessica Ryder, PT, DPT, an outpatient physical therapist at Renown Rehabilitation Hospital. For some people, high-intensity exercise is exciting because its different almost every day and results can happen quickly.

According to Jessie Fisher, PT, MPT, OCS, director of rehabilitation and sports medicine at Northern Nevada Medical Center, the popularity of HIIT also canbe attributed to the fact that these workouts require far less time than endurance training.

Many people are choosing HIIT because of the time constraints of our busy lives. A lot of the programs advertise that you can get fit with 20-minute daily workouts, Fisher said. In general, high-intensity interval training is designed to be short bursts of anaerobic training moderate to high-intensity activity with relative rest periods of lower intensity activity.

However, a potential downside of HIIT can be the challenging intensity that is the namesake of these workouts. For folks with certain injuries and medical conditions, as well as those who find themselves dreading high levels of physical exertion on a consistent basis, endurance training may be the better bet for a regular exercise routine.

The difference between high-intensity exercise and endurance exercise mainly lies in the level of effort and amount of time a person works. High-intensity exercise typically involves interval training with short bursts of high-level effort, say a seven or eight on a 10-point scale, Ryder said. On the other hand, endurance exercise involves a steady level or effort for example, a four out of 10 sustained over a long period of time.

In turn, endurance training tends to be an option only for those who have larger blocks of free time to devote to an exercise regimen. For those who are looking to compete in events such as marathons and triathlons, endurance training is crucial. Its also a popular choice for folks who may want more than a quick calorie burn from their exercise time.

Endurance exercise is a good option for people who have more time available to exercise. Plus, many forms of endurance exercise are performed outdoors, which can mean a better view and fresh air, Ryder said. With endurance exercise, youre also working out at a conversational level, which means you can carry on a conversation while doing the exercise. For that reason, endurance exercise can also be social if done in a group. Some people also find endurance exercise more meditative than high-intensity exercise when done alone.

Whether you choose the low-time, high-effort HIIT workouts or a long and steady endurance plan or perhaps some combination of both be sure to proceed with caution, especially when youre just starting out.

Its important to make sure youre healthy enough for the type of exercise program that youre interested in, start slow, and avoid activities that cause pain not muscle soreness, but pain, Fisher said. There is risk of either a traumatic injury or an overuse injury in both HIIT and endurance training if you jump into a program too quickly.

Carls Family YMCA is growing – Hometownlife.com

Connie Johnson, Correspondent 11:07 a.m. ET Feb. 21, 2017

The new facility features a community room that will host a variety of classes.(Photo: Submitted)

Carls Family YMCA has been part of Milford and the greater Huron Valley since May 2002. Staffers are excited to celebrate a 15-year birthday and a new year with a building and renovation project.

A fast and furious kickoff for the build-out was announced in November. Three short months, four room renovations, one build-out, lots of dustand just a few hiccups later, the project finished this week with a final sweep of the broom.

We saw that we were outgrowing our facility and needed to expand to grow with the community, said Kymberly Reed, wellness coordinator at the Y. Weve always been focused on strengthening our community by meeting needs of our friends and neighbors and the updates and additions will go a long way to do just that."

Doreen K. Durandetto, district vice president and executive director, said that when the Y was constructed, some of the space was left unfinished with the intention of adding on. Even though the build-out was planned, it still required the right timing and for the right reasons. This would not have been possible without the generosity of private donors and foundations for giving above and beyond their normal donations.

Bart Reed, regional director and former director of Carls, said: "Without a plan and a goal, building out the unfinished space could have been just another project. Initiating programs like First Responders, Family and Teen programming and new programming like functional training and injury prevention, the build-out flows with these goals of programming. We're always looking for those in the community who want to stand alongside Carls Family YMCA as a contributor. We're kicking off the 2017 annual campaign, which raises money for the Carls community scholarship programs."

The 2,500-square-foot Healthy Living Center features equipment for functional fitness training. Functional fitness helps train your muscles to work together and prepare them for daily tasks by simulating common movements you might do at home, at work or in sports. Featuring TRXsuspension training, battle ropes, heavy bags and much more, its the hot spot for small group personal training and future group exercise classes.

A new community room, located in the Healthy Living Center, will hold various classes, private yoga and fitness sessions, as well as staff education.

The Healthy Living Center has allowed me to step out and try new exercises on equipment that wasnt available before,"YMCA member Daedra Surowiec said. I really appreciate that the Y considered what members were looking for when considering the space, so that the classes and activities are accessible and enjoyable for all of us. The new community room has become a place for people in the community to learn about healthy living."

Other renovations in the facility include a Power Cardio Center for group exercise classes, a relocated Child Watch anda Well Being Center. The Well Being Center will featurea variety of family-oriented programming. Classes will include Mommy & Me, Family Yoga, Sensory Safe Yoga and activities for special needs, Kids Fit classes, obstacle course classes, art and dancing.

A family open house is planned for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25.Carls YMCA is located at 300 Family Drive in Milford. The entire facility will be open to the public for tours, demos of programs and classes, family fun, snacks and more. Women’s Services at OVMC/EORH – Martins Ferry Times Leader

How We Live

Feb 21, 2017

WHEELING Ohio Valley Medical Center and East Ohio Regional Hospital, along with East Ohio Regional Outpatient Center St. Clairsville, are committed to excellence in womens health with services that can only be found at our facilities.

The year 2016 brought a newly remodeled wing called The Birth Center at OVMC with warm and comforting mother and baby suites that allow for critical bonding time.

The Birth Center at OVMC offers families The Golden Hour where mother and child experience uninterrupted skin-to-skin time. Research has shown that this special time increases bonding between the mother and baby and is critical to the babys growth and development.

Visitation during this time is limited to the mother, baby, and the mothers primary support person. During the Golden Hour, healthy newborns are placed in Kangaroo Care, skin-to-skin, immediately following birth and remain there for at least one hour. All immediate care of the newborn including drying, vital signs, and physical assessment will take place while the baby is on the mothers chest. Weighing, measuring, and bathing will be delayed until after that first hour. The baby will remain with the mother throughout the recovery period.

The Birth Center at OVMC encourages skin-to-skin contact where the newborn baby, dressed only in a diaper and hat, is placed directly on moms (or moms support persons) chest, and they are covered with warmed blankets. This skin-to-skin contact happens during the Golden Hour and continues to benefit the mother and baby throughout the hospital stay and even at home. Nurses show you how to properly position your baby for safe skin-to-skin bonding. There are many health benefits to skin-to-skin bonding. It helps mothers and babies learn to breastfeed.

Mothers who breastfeed have less bleeding, may lose weight more quickly, and may have a reduced risk of diabetes, heart disease and breast and ovarian cancers. Babies who are breastfed may have a reduced risk of ear infections, allergic illnesses, respiratory infections, gastrointestinal infections, obesity and sudden infant death. All parents are encouraged to room-in with their newborns 24 hours per day. We want you to become familiar with your baby by learning his/her feeding cues as well as their behavior.

The staff at The BirthCenter at OVMC also work closely with Kristy Edie, West Virginia ambassador for Count the Kicks, to help educate expectant mothers on the importance of monitoring their babies movements in the third trimester. Edie worked to bring the program locally after she lost her baby in her third trimester of pregnancy.

While your chances of losing your baby after the first trimester decrease, one out of every 150 pregnancies ends in stillbirth, said Edie. Fifty percent of mothers who have lost a baby to stillbirth reported perceived gradual decline in fetal movement several days prior to the death of their baby. Count the Kicks will help you detect any significant changes in your babys movements that may indicate potential problems.

Childbirth educators at The BirthCenter will work with expecting mothers to teach them how to Count the Kicks with the guidance of Edie and information established by healthybirthday.org, the parent organization for Count the Kicks.

Sherri Kellas, RN, Womens Health Nurse Navigator, and Childbirth Educator, says, By teaming up with Kristy as the new ambassador of the West Virginia Count the Kicks program, we are helping to inform and educate our community about a very simple movement check that moms can do when they are in their third trimester of pregnancy, when they are 28 to 40 weeks pregnant, the last 12 weeks of their pregnancy, to monitor their babys well-being and keep their babies safe!

Kellas continued saying, Its as simple as setting aside time each day to relax, lie on your side, and monitor for baby movement. And a movement can be a kick, roll, jab, twist, turn or swish. It is a reassuring sign of baby wellness to feel 10 kicks in a two-hour time period. You should eat and drink something prior to monitoring movement and pick a time when your baby usually is active. If your baby is not making 10 kicks or movements in two hours, you need to call your physician or health care professional.

AFFORDABLE CARE

In an effort to help prospective parents find hospitals that deliver quality and affordable maternity care, Highmark BCBS West Virginia announced that Ohio Valley Medical Center has been designated as one of the first hospitals to receive the Blue Distinction Center+ for Maternity Care, a new designation under the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program.

Nearly 4 million babies are born in the U.S. annually, making childbirth the most common cause of hospitalization. This new Blue Distinction Centers+ for Maternity Care program evaluates hospitals on several quality measures, including the percentage of newborns that fall into the category of early elective delivery, an ongoing concern in the medical community. Compared with babies born 39 weeks or later, early term infants face higher risks of infant death and respiratory ailments such as respiratory distress syndrome, pneumonia, and respiratory failure, among other conditions. These babies also have a higher rate of admission to Neonatal Intensive Care Units.

We at The Birth Center at OVMC take pride and joy in providing you and your baby with exceptional quality care, said Dr. Lea Harms, obstetrician and gynecologist. Making you feel welcome, safe, and taken care of from the first time you meet us throughout your delivery, postpartum, and beyond. We are proud to have earned this distinction.

Blue Distinction Center+ for Maternity Care, an expansion of the national Blue Distinction Specialty Care program, recognizes hospitals for delivering quality, affordable specialty care safely and effectively, based on objective measures developed with input from the medical community. To receive a Blue Distinction Center+ for Maternity Care designation, a hospital must also meet requirements for cost.

In 2016, was the first full year for the Virginia Gasaway Womens Services program. The new services, named for Virginia Gasaway, a longtime supporter of women and children in the Ohio Valley, includes a concierge service to women at all stages of life. The service provides a convenient way for women to manage their health needs. Through this concierge service, women can now contact our dedicated womens health navigator. The navigator is a member of the health care team whose sole mission is to guide women through the medical maze stretching out before them.

This is a coordinated effort to make womens health seamless in our hospital family at OVMC and EORH, says Michael J. Caruso, president and CEO of Ohio Valley Health Services and Education Corp.,the parent company of OVMC and EORH.

Our hospitals have some of the finest OB-GYN specialists and nurses on staff, and they look forward to continuing the highest level of quality care for our patients.

Women can choose their services, location, and physicians through an online directory available on our website or by calling. Many services, including mammogram, DEXA scan, laboratory testing, and more, will be available at both hospital campuses as well as at our St. Clairsville complex behind Riesbecks. You can call to schedule at the location that is most convenient for you.

OVMC is a leader in Breast MRI, as it is the only facility within a 25-mile radius that is a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence in all of the American College of Radiology accreditation programs. These include breast ultrasound, ultrasound buided breast biopsy, mammography, stereotactic Breast biopsy and breast MRI.

To schedule a mammography at East Ohio Regional Hospital Outpatient Center St. Clairsville, 106 Plaza Drive, call 304-234-8888. The outpatient center also features Walk-In Tuesday mammograms where no appointment is necessary.

To learn more about the services offered through the Virginia Gasaway Womens Services Program log onto http://www.ovmc-eorh.com or call 888-904-9244 to speak to the Womens Service Navigator.

Don’t worry about how many calories you burn during sex it’s not about losing weight – Metro

(Picture: Ella Byworth for Metro.co.uk)

Every month or so, I see it: yet another article telling me the best sex positions for burning sh*t loads of calories.

Because sex is a fun way to exercise, right? More fun than running on a treadmill, anyway.

And we all know that if somethings fun, we should slap a number on it, start timing, and make sure that whatever the activity is, itsproductive, not just enjoyable.

Thats why I know that if I want to tone my bum and legs, I should opt for cowgirl position (even if its total sh*t). If I want to engage my core, doggys the way to go. If I want to build strength, I should do it standing up.

If Im trying to lose weight, I need to make sure the sex Im having is energetic, fast, and with plenty of thrusting. If I really want to do tone up, I can do lunges mid-sex.

This knowledge is, quite frankly, pretty bloody depressing.

The last thing I want to be thinking about during sex is my body-related insecurities, losing weight, and the three pastries I had for lunch.

Sex is supposed to be aboutfun. Its supposed to be about being in the moment, forgetting about everything else, and focusing on whoever youre having sex with and all the pleasure youre (hopefully) feeling.

The second you frame sex as a way to lose weight and stack up your activity count for the day, youre missing the point.

The minute youre timing sex, youre not in the moment.

Once you start choosing positions based on how many calories they burn instead of how good they feel, youre missing out on pleasure.

And if youre viewing sex as a way to fit in some exercise, rather than something you actually want to do just for the fun of it, youre making sex a chore.

Which is a massive shame.

Sex is one of the few pleasures in life that as long as the people doing it are consensual adults and no ones getting hurt we can enjoy without having to worry about doing things right or making sure what were doing is productive.

Sex is something far away from work and all the other errands adults have to do. Its something we do purely for enjoyment (unless were trying to procreate, which is a whole other load of stress).

Trying to smush it into our fitness routines, our calorie counting, and the pressure to always be doingsomethingthats good for us ruins the fun of sex.

Its a great idea to try to make health and fitness fun, and to burn calories doing something you enjoy. And Id never bash anyone for doing that instead of forcing themselves through circuit training or spinning.

But there are some things that need to be kept separate and your fitness routine and sex are part of that.

Because much in the same way that making dancing your exercise routine instead of just something you do for fun makes it feel like a drag, the same is true for sex.

If youre one of those people who loves working out as in, truly, honestly loves the feeling of exercising youre probably not counting calories too closely.

You run because you love the feeling of your feet hitting the pavement. You play football because you love it. Yes, you box because you know its good for you, but also because you love how it makes youfeel.

If youre working out just to tot up a calories-burned count, it feels more like a chore. Youre not thinking: ooh, this is fun. Youre thinking: how much longer do I have to do this until Im done?

And while that may be okay for Zumba (we do all need to get some exercise in, so its okay to do something you dont enjoy just to stay healthy), sex doesnt deserve this kind of disrespect.

How would you feel if the person you were having sex with was tracking it on their Fitbit? How would you feel knowing that while youre enjoying waves of pleasure, your partners timing each thrust, adding up the calories, and telling themselves that theyll be able to skip the oblique twists if they keep going for five more minutes?

Not great, we imagine.

By turning sex into a way to burn calories, we take away the joy of sex for sexs sake. We make it into something we have to do. We turn it into just another thing on our to-do list, because we just cant relax and do nothing that isnt taking us closer to our goals.

Its rude to our partners, who are more than just exercise machines, but more importantly, its a way to cheat yourself out of sexual joy.

Sex is great. Its pure pleasure. Its not something that needs to be done, its not a target to be ticked off or an achievement to unlock.

We need to stop trying to repurpose sex into another way to fulfill our goal-obsessed, pressured needs.

Enjoy the fact that yes, a really great sex session is good for your health. But dont turn it into yet another thing that you track, analyse, and change to burn as many calories as possible.

Keep your calorie counting to where it belongs: when youre eating or when youre doing a workout purely for the sake of working out.

Calorie counting is mostly miserable. Sex is brilliant. Never should the two meet.
